Camp Battles – DE

For 2018, the Miami Dolphins will definitely have a new look on the defensive line, especially at defensive end.  Most notably, on March 2nd, the Dolphins traded for Rams DE Robert Quinn, sending a 4th RD pick and swapped 6th RD picks to the Rams.   What the Dolphins are probably hoping for is the 10.5 sacks he achieved in ’14 as a true DE, or the 19 sacks he got in 2013, but the Dolphins would love something in between the two.  Cam Wake returns at the age of 36, but we all know and understand that Wake treats his body like a temple, and is in prime physical condition.   Charles Harris will be entering his 2nd season, and although he won’t be a starter, the theme at DT also applies to DE, so there will be plenty of rotation going on, and Charles Harris will get plenty of opportunities to show some improvement.  Also returning this season is Andre Branch, who had a down season last year as he was maligned by minor injuries.  William Hayes also returns, and although he was also hampered by injuries last season, Hayes continues to be a productive player in run support and is probably our best edge setter.

Robert Quinn RDE – 6’4 250

Although we will be rotating players often, Robert Quinn will likely be starting on the right side.  If Quinn is healthy, specifically his back, he could be a huge help to the Dolphins defense.  Last season used as an OLB in the Rams 3-4 alignment, Quinn managed 8.5 sacks, along with 32 total tackles with 2 FF’s and 2 FR’s.  If Quinn can give the Dolphins production like he had in 2013 or 2014, this defense will be significantly better than last year.  Unfortunately, it’s been 4 years since he’s done that, but I admire the Dolphins gamble on the former All-Pro DE.

________________________________________________________________________

William Hayes LDE – 6’3 278

Hayes played in 10 games for the Dolphins last season and although he didn’t start, he’s our best run defending end.  Hayes will also play some DT, and he will do that on obvious passing downs to give the defense  some more of a rush from the middle.  Whether he starts or not is unimportant, Hayes will definitely be leaned on for help on the DL, whether it’s at LE or DT.

_________________________________________________________________________

Andre Branch RDE – 6’5 263

Branch had 14 starts last year, but as I previously mentioned, he is 2017 season was marred by minor injuries.  Branch’s tackle total dropped from almost 50 to 23, and his sack total was down from 5.5 to 4.5.  The Dolphins would be happy with his 2016 production or better, and if healthy, Branch may well be the starter, as they save Robert Quinn for pass rush duties.

_________________________________________________________________________

Charles Harris RDE – 6’3 250

Last year’s first RD pick showed some potential although overall it was not an overwhelmingly successful season.  While the rookie showed some explosive get off, he managed only 2 sacks, but did get 23 QB hurries.  This season, some of those hurries need to turn into sacks.  The Dolphins have enough talent at DE that Hayes won’t need to be leaned on heavily, but there’s no question they need to bring him along from last season.  The 23YO will definitely get his pass rushing chances, but he will also get some work in the run game too. It’s time for Harris to start developing into a complete player, and not just a pass rush specialist.

___________________________________________________________________________

Cameron Malveaux DE – 6’5 276

The big Houston Cougars DE showed some flashes last season, mostly in preseason action.  He definitely has good size, and the 2 sport athlete (Basketball, Football) has the athleticism to play DE.   The 2017 UDFA will get his shot to make the team, but the considerable depth after the Quinn trade will make it more difficult.  At worst, Malveaux is a developmental player worthy of the PS.

___________________________________________________________________________

Jonathan Woodard DE – 6’6 271

Woodard was a 2016 7th RD draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars.  The Jaguars cut him, and then the Atlanta Falcons picked him up and put him on the PS only to release him from the PS which enabled the Dolphins to pick him up and place him on the Dolphins PS.  Woodard recorded 15 sacks in 24 (16 starts) games at Central Arkansas, so he certainly made the most of his opportunities there.  Another DE with the right size and athleticism who needs to be brought along and developed.  Not to be repetitive, but with the current depth, Woodard faces a high climb to make the team.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Claudy Mathieu DE – 6’6 250

The former California-Pennsylvania and Notre Dame (Ohio) Falcons player came into the NFL last season as a 25YO rookie.  Another player will excellent physical traits, but a long way to go to being a finished product.  The Dolphins picked up Mathieu as an UDFA this season. At the moment, Mathieu is a longshot to make the cut.

______________________________________________________________________________

Quincy Redmon DE – 6’5 240

Redmon was signed by the Dolphins as a 2018 UDFA.  The former Fairmont College Fighting Falcon DE was a 2016 was named All-MEC 1st team defensive lineman with 52 total tackles and 12 sacks.  Injuries sidelined Redmon in 2017 as a Senior as he missed the final 5 games.  Another athletic specimen who faces an uphill climb to make the roster.

so 3 weeks from this Thursday is the first pre-season game? Awesome!!! Then after 2 of those I will be saying…when will the pre-season end??LOL

Said ye who works in the AC 😁

        Hey Summer

        GO THE F AWAY!!!

        THANKS FOR THE WORK MIKE,
And I’d say welcome back, but taint my house,

So WELCOME to your humble abode!!!

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

KV – Has nothing to do with working in A/C, nothing better than the long days of summer. You come home, and there’s still some daylight left to enjoy, and it’s not so cold that everyone goes into hibernation. If you work outside though, I can see why the summer can be a PITA.

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

        😎 Mike..

Hibernation mode down here is Summer cuz its to damn hot to leave the AC, unless you GOTTA WORK!!!

Winter time is when the couch potatoes come out down here!!!

Working outside, it don’t matter to me how much daylight is left when I’m done, WANT NO PART OF IT AFTET WORKING IN IT ALL DAY!!!

But Yea, I get it (summer) for those bound to be snowed in come Winter 😨

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Mike, nice write up.

Branch started the season playing really well – had 3 sacks in the first 4 games then at some point he got banged up which eventually lead to him being shut down and had offseason surgery on his knee. He offers us quality depth.

  3. 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

    Quinn is 27 right..

Wasn’t CWake around 27 when coming to us from the CFL??
And look what he’s done in Miami..

He and Quinn are #1 & 2 in sacks over however many of the last several to a bunch of years,

Be pretty cool if Quinn can be near as productive for near as long as CWAKE!!!

    GOFINS!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Quinn had some injuries in recent years that cut down on his production. But he appears to be healthy with all the reports about how explosive he looked in OTAs with his rare bending ability off the edge. Him having a big season could really make a difference on our defense.

  4. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Nice Mike…I think having quality pass rushers is the 3rd most important thing behind a running game and good QB play.

It would seem on paper we look good at the DE dept, I think Branch will step up this year and I hope Harris does as well. I believe this is one of our strongest positions.

I hope you had a good Vacation

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They always say the QB, guys that protect the QB, and then guys that disrupt the QB are always the most important, so I agree. Vacation was fantastic, I need a vacation from my vacation. It was just non-stop activities from early till late at night, and it kinda caught up to me. Both my son and I have summer colds, probably because we burned the candle at both ends all week long.

  5. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    Mike,
I like the Summer, but I am a fan of all 4 seasons. The one thing I hate is heat and humidity, it is one of the reasons I moved back from Florida. It has been like Florida here quite a bit this Summer and I hate it!!…..and yes….I would rather the snow and cold than the heat and humidity……..nobody ever accused me of being normal…LOL

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

      and welcome back!

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Bookman! I get it, the summer humidity and heat can be overwhelming, but I’ll take those long days over dark at 4:30-5PM in winter every time. So many more parties and get togethers, to me summer is the best

    • D's avatar D says:

Im there with ya man and yet i have lived my entire life in the coastal south east. Thats about as much humidity and you can get, though i will say that some parts of Florida can be as bad as any place i have lived here.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure how many total DL we’ll keep, could be 9 or 10 total. Maybe we use an 8 man rotation in the games so everyone plays about 30 plays and can remain fresh and attacking through the 4th quarter. That sounds like the plan so that’s why we need the depth.

We’ve all seen when a defense gets tired and is playing sluggish late in the game, how the game slips away because they can’t stop anything. Really want to see us terrorizing offenses for all 4 quarters.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think we normally keep 10

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh yeah we have in the past many times but the snaps weren’t always divided evenly. Not saying it will be an exact snap count for all because it won’t, but it should be close with no one player having an overload of snaps. I like the idea.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The DL rotation will be 9 guys, with Hayes split between the 2 positions. No reason to use any more or less when all are healthy enough to play. I’d think, if one of the 9 were inactive, because of injury or whatever, we’d use an 8 man rotation.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This summer has had some really hot days and some humid ones like today, but it’s been a really nice summer for the most part.

  8. 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

  9. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

can’t imagine him on the other side of Wake! he looks good against the run as well

  10. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

MIke E — hope your trip was a good one, a nice write on the DEs. Not as sure as you about getting Harris to be a complete DE though. Think he was drafted as and is a pass rushing specialist, mainly at least. Gonna have to work out how they are used, but we are five quality deep. Should have some real fresh legs lining up looking to get to the QB.

  11. 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

I’d (without question) say that Quinn, Branch, Hayes, Harris, & CWake make the 53,

Though I would like to see one of the big youngsters of Malveaux or Woodard..

But don’t see it unless we only keep 4 DT (Phillips, Godchaux, Taylor, & Spence)

Which would leave the 11th DL Gabe Wright out as well as Moten & Pittman

With Hayes’ age, and Branch expected 10 mill cut in o19…
We could sure use a big Malveaux/Woodard for the future at DE!!!

Minus #93, we sure could use a 5th DT for the future (not named Hayes/age),
Gabe Wright would be my guess…

6 DE (with Malveaux OR Woodard) & 4 DT with Hayes being the interchangeable 5th DT ??

    OR

    5 DE & 5 DT (with a likely Gabe Wright) ??

DE’s primarily Branch & Harris are both likely gone in o19..

    So I’m leaning toward a 6th DE (Malveaux/Woodard)
    over a 5th DT Wright etc…

    Long-term
DE is more important, and Hayes can be the 5th DT for one more year..

    GOFINS!!!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I can guarantee you Harris would t be gone in 19.

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

That was supposed to say Hayes (my badd)
same miscue as in Mikes piece…

Sorry Mike, Harris Hayes in the same convo can tend to get mixed-up!!!

YEA ABSOLUTELY, THAT WAS MY TYPO STEVE,
hope the jest of it is still comprehendible!!

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

“””DE’s primarily Branch & Harris are both likely gone in o19..””””

        HAYES, NOTTT HARRIS !!!!

    • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

Shoot DE CWake can’t have too many more years in him either..

So I’m definitely hoping to keep DE orMalveaux and/or Woodard over DT Wright!!!

Perhaps draft a stud DT early in o19??

      GOFINS!!!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We’ll see what happens this season, but both Branch and Hayes could be in our future. Branch isn’t that old and even didn’t play up to the money could take less. And I just like how Hayes plays. Seems he wants to stay with the Phins and that run DE/DT flex option is valuable.

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

        Yea, I like Hayes a lot !!!

DT Jordan Phillips in in contract year,
So thinking we’ll likely go stud DT early in o19..

And with DE’s Hayes/Branch/Wake on the tip of the tail-end of their Dolphin careers,

I’m thinking we should keep one if not both of those young big DE’s (Malveaux/Woodard)…

I hate running to the store for milk in my morning coffee, I like stocking shelves long beforehand!!!

        “””We’ll See””” soon enough 😛

        GOFINS!!!

  12. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – I think when you draft a guy in RD 1 you hope that player is eventually a starter. Whether Harris ever becomes great or even average against the run remains to be seen, but I don’t think you take a guy at #22 and have him only play on passing downs. Just my thoughts

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

REALLY NICE article, Mike E.!! –I, too, was underwhelmed by Harris’ performance last season. NOT up to round 1 standards. But, maybe THIS YEAR – – – .

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just see Harris as like Wake. Which also means that he could play a lot of run downs as well. And even if not great at them….. there is always what they are great at to pop out on any given play. And that is a nice option to have.

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

It was said forever that JT couldn’t defend the run!!!

I’d be fine with Harris becoming a JT type,
(Though I’d doubt that any Dolphin DE will ever be as productive as JT), but I’ll take the likes of what he brought whenever on the field!!!

        GOFINS!!!

EVERY SO OFTEN something happens to put a huge smile on both your face and your heart.
TODAY was one of those huge smile days.
    ————————
A FEW WEEKS AGO at a convention my company attended I came across a dealer from Alabama who said “I heard you’re a big Dolphin fan/season ticket holder. And I also was told that you wrote a series on the Dolphin’s Perfect Season. Is that true?” I fessed-up and said, “Yup. it’s all true.” “Well,” he continued, one of my best friends is a key player from the ’72 season. Where can he find this series of articles?” I told him how to get it off of the internet. He replied, I’ll be sending you something special in a couple of weeks.”
    ————————-
This “something special” arrived Friday at work while I was gone to Orlando working a convention on International Drive. I’m a professional numismatic grader/authenticator by profession. I’m also president of the state organization that sponsors this convention. After busting my ass all weekend, I returned to my desk at work to see an 8 1/2 by 11 custom photo of one of the greatest players ever to come out of the state of Alabama, starting 1972 Miami Dolphins linebacker Mike Kolen!!! On the left side of this photo was the inscription “Randy, God Bless You! —Mike Kolen.” Then, on the right side of the game action close-up photo the words “Captain Crunch, 1972 Perfect Season, 17-0” were carefully hand written. A note from this dealer from Alabama to me said “Randy, Here is something for the trophy room. Hope you enjoy!”
    ———————–
I was, and I am, absolutely stunned and amazed. And I just can’t get that smile on my face!

Wyo, don’t get me wrong. Astros deserve to be where they are. Been to many games at Minute Maid over the last 5 years where they fielded a AAA team and would say to myself: “if only this owner would spend money”… but they built through the draft and THEN attracted FAs (just like the GSWarriors). So, Astros earned it. But they still feel like NL team lost in the wrong neighborhood.
For perspective, check with 2010, 2011 Rangers seeking 3rd WS appearance only to get swept by A’s in last series of the season and lose the division. 🙂 I feel that vibe again this year.

That’s strange because these deals are pretty much set up as no haggle.
    ————————————————-
Its always the offset language that hangs it up. Teams dnt wanna put that language in the contract because it mean they still have to pay them even if they cut them and another team picks them up. Players of course want the ability to double dip so it winds up a stalemate sometimes. I dont know why it has to be though, because i doubt very seriously a guy picked that high shouldn’t be someone you feel is a threat to be cut before the end of his rookie deal, not to mention rookie contracts, even the best of them arent big money contracts so it shouldnt be a concern on the teams part to give them that security and get them signed.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I guess NFL teams are looking to protect themselves from the Kevin White’s and Reuben Foster’s of the world. One guy can’t stay healthy and the other has constant off the field legal issues.

Thats pretty awesome OD, but when you started that statement about one of the greatest Alabama players to play as a dolphin i assumed you were about to talk about Dwight Stephenson. Still a very cool story.

  30. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    MikeE,
deGrom talk on A’s blogs is whispered only by the most optimistic die-hards. Unlike 2014 when A’s had best record in baseball when they traded for Lester and Samardjiza, this team won’t be going “all in” for top of the line pitcher yet. The only reason they MIGHT is that he is under control for a few years… but as the lowest payroll in mlb (yes, even lower than Marlins) I can’t see them paying one guy the same money our entire infield makes. lol
A’s have some great prospects at 3B and 1B that are blocked by Chapman and Olson, as well as SS Barreto. I think the only untouchables are Jesus Luzardo (P) and Murphy (C). I can’t see Mets trading deGrom without asking for Luzardo. I think A’s would rather keep Luzardo as part of great rotation built from trading AWAY that 2014 team. Now, IF the A’s managed to get within, say, 4 games of Houston over the next 2 weeks, that might actually change the narrative.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hear ya Rhino, right now I’d think there are a few destinations deGrom could land, but the Mets will definitely be asking the best of the best, and rightfully so.

Not sure you’re going to get offered much more than that next year by the Steelers or another team as you’ll have another year of wear and tear for a RB.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Huge discussion on NFL radio about that this morning. Bell is trying to set the price for RB’s, but at $14M per, which is what the Steelers offered, it’s $6M more than any other RB contract, so it would have exceeded that by quite a lot. Still, Bell feels like he should be paid as much as Sammy Watkins and Jarvis Landry, and it’s pretty hard to argue against that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Many contracts seem pretty out of whack to me. I’m just pointing out that a RB’s lifespan is lesser than many other positions and he may never see that deal offered again. However no doubt he’s a great player.

  38. D's avatar D says:

Just to give you some vantage on PFF’s scoring. According to PFF:

Kenny Stills is our worst WR, followed by Leontee Caroo, they both are “Poor”. Grant (Below Average), Parker and Wilson (Average) with Amendola is the best with an above average rating.Stills atually graded out somewhat significantly lower then Caroo…. how in the fuck is that possible,

They also believe Godchaux is the worst out of he, Phillips and Spence, Spence being the best. All of our DT must be liked by them because they all got average ratings at least lol.

Our DE are all over the place, Quinn being the lowest rated one, rated “Poor”, Branch and Harris bath are average, Wake above average, and Hayes apparently is our best rate in the “High Quality” range.

Something that should summon ORob, they have Gore and Drake evenly rated, both above average, barely.

They also have Larsen and Davis pretty evenly rated, but both are deep into the “Poor” range, Kilgore too. In fact the only OL we have that has a grade better than Poor were Sitton (High Quality) and James(Above Average).

Gavin Escobar is out best TE, though thy dont have grades on the rookies yet, but he is the only not “Poor” Rated TE on our roster, and his rating is inside the below average range, close to average.

Our QB’s other than Tanny who obviously doesnt have a score from being out since 2016, we all rated “Poor”.

The LB’s are all poop apparently, especially Alonzo whose rating if it drops much more will be negative and they will have to find a new color in the spectrum to use to classify it. All our LB’s rated poor, though some didn’t have a rating because they are nubs.

Our secondary didnt fare much better, Both the starters from last year on the outside are poor, Our safeties are average to above average, should be obvious which is which. They did sorta like Bobby McCain though, had him as above average.

So there we have it, oh yeah i forgot, on a tier scale of tier 1 being the best and tier 4 being the worst, they have our offensive play makers rated tier 3, but redeemed us by giving us an overall tier 4 rating for our offense as a whole lol. They didnt get a chance to rub it in though, the article had nothing for our defense, but with the player scores and can pretty much guess what tier they would have had us in.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because they don’t look at all the circumstances, young players taking the next step and the potential of rookies or the change of scenery for some vet guys. They’re too locked into their own opinions based on what they see or think they saw. And who are these friggin PFF people anyway? LOL

    —————————————————-
Its like peanuts though what he is rumored to be seeking and the difference in what they were offering. It was supposedly like 500K a year difference, so a total contract amount of 2.5mil on a 70mil deal. Just seems silly to walk away when you are that close.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ross Tucker was saying he wanted about $16M per, but I agree, he should have taken the $14M per/$70M contract

  40. D's avatar D says:

Oh and Tim, there really is no “out of whack”, they are all out of whack to us, so simple supply and deman previals here. It only matters these things, how important are you to your team or some other team, what competition is there in the market at your position, where do you stand in comparison to them, and do you bring something to the table that no other does.

I think in Bells case, there isnt a ton of competition that compares to him and coming up for contract at the same time. David Johnson is, but he is most likely gonna get the FT or a new contract. He definately controls a significant amount of leverage in his contract negotiations. It is very had for most RB to win the negotiations, especially if they are turning the corner towards 30, but at 26, he could give some team that missing piece that puts them over the edge. He is a good receiver for systems that like to use RB’s like that, he is a very unique running threat, not a power back but something way beyond just a one cut. If the Steelers dont pay him that 14.5 i think he’s going to get it from someone.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What I meant is some players are looking for so much money that it fucks up the team’s overall ability to put together a complete team. That’s why I like the way we’ve started to go about it with a lot of guys no higher than $30+M contracts and not tops in the league at multiple positions because many times those teams do not win big.

For instance the Rams are going to have a tough time signing a bunch of guys soon and that’s sad because they really do have a good nucleus.

As for Bell, first he has to play the 2018 season and in 2019 he’ll be heading into his 7th season. Maybe there will be a team who pays him what he wants, but it won’t be a competitive market. It will be one or two teams competing and willing because most teams are not paying RBs big bucks. It’s just the way it is.

He should have signed the deal the Steelers offered him because if he suffers a serious injury or another suspension it’s over. This is a guy who has been suspended twice – one being arrested on marijuana possession, and another for PEDs. He also had a season ending knee injury.

  41. Ken's avatar Ken says:

If Bell wants to be paid like a WR he should play WR. RB is not valued as much as WR. It’s just the way it is

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He’s trying to pave the way to RB’s getting paid for what they do. He does a lot more than either Landry or Watkins, yet they get paid more

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

And neither Watkins or 14 shoulda got anywhere near the money they got!!!

Brandon Cooks got Landry money and runs circles around him!!!

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

But their shelf life is much shorter and quite frankly it is not clear they do more than WRs any more with how important the passing game has become

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because they were both grossly overpaid. Watkins is the more talented player but not reliable. However he can be a major scoring threat. That’s why he only got a 3 year deal. CLE probably thinks they have Wes Welker for 4-5 years in Landry. Maybe so. They better hope so, that’s a lot of money for 5-10 yard catches and up and down TD totals.

M13 has said he’s past that at this point, prefers we go younger.
    ———————–
It’s true. The Pearl would cost us an arm and a leg, and we’re still not totally out of cap trouble yet. And even if we didn’t draft Minkah, I think we look very good with Reshad and TJ playing Safeties.

The idea is now to get YOUNGER at some key positions… particularly expensive positions. If we can draft well, we can get 4-5 years of solid play on rookie contracts.

Now if we were a mere Safety away from a Super Bowl run and had the cap space, I’d give the MOON to the Pearl… but that not the case for us.

I can still admire him from afar… so long as he doesn’t go to the AFC East. It makes me happy that some of y’all remember how badly I wanted to draft the Pearl back in 2010. I never pounded the table so hard in my life for any other player before or since. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our cap issue is fine. Plenty of ways to move on next year while still having some in-season money this year. Remember as the young prospects become players and are still on rookie contracts, there will be another rookie class next year. This team has a two year window to start competing or we will move on from some players and the top brass. Even though the top brass may be replaced at some point, it doesn’t mean there is nothing left for the next regime to build on. There’s lots of promising young players on this team. It’s always churning if you don’t win.

I hear ya, I’m just trying to say that we can NOT afford a marquis player right now. IMO (only), one is not GOOD with cap space until one CAN afford a marquis player like the Pearl.

We aren’t signing anyone as a marquis player — so as to put us over the top to win a Super Bowl — being we don’t have the cap space AND we aren’t quite that close yet… or so it would seem! 🙂

Either I’m not conveying my thoughts well, or you’re misunderstanding me. Once we become a perennial top-contender (not a team comprised of high-priced FAs — DRAFTING well, instead!), our cap space should be GOOD enough to warrant signing one high-priced FA to put us over the top to win a Super Bowl.

It’s a process just getting to be a perennial top-contender, and we’re not quite there yet. But I DO believe that we could be getting close! As you stated, we shed over $40M by getting rid of 3 mere players who didn’t get us any closer to a Super Bowl than the year before.

I think we’re on the same page, Brother! I just wish that we could be like the Patsies* in that they can generally have a marquis FA of their choice with money to spend — and for a discount — because they are perennial winners (albeit cheaters). 🙂

Ty Law should have been MVP of Super Bowl XXXVI. He had 8 tackles, a pick 6 for 47 yards and 2 PD. Brady won the MVP with 16-27 145 yards 1 TD. The Pats only scored 6 points in the 2nd half. Not sure how Brady was MVP.

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

I remember back in the day that Jerry Rice was the obvious SB MVP, but they gave it to Montana…

Big hoopla via Rice that it was a white/black thing..

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s a tough one because both Montana and Rice were dominant in both SB’s they won together. Kind of like the chicken and the egg. Was it Montana making Rice look good, or the other way around? To me it was both but usually the nod will go to the QB. Brady was not dominant in the SB I mentioned. Ty Law was. They don’t win that game without him.

I dunno Tim, im thinking Jim Thorpe was the best athlete of all time. Multiple gold medals from the olympics, in the decathlon and pentathlon. He is in the HoF for football, and was a pro-baseballer and basketballer as well. He did all this while being held back to a good extent because he was a native american.

I also think single sport supremacy, you have to consider Michael Jordan and Ted Williams on a similar level to Gretzsky.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Thorpe was a very different era. I also said team sport.

Gretzky’s stats are so far beyond his piers. He would have more assists than the 2nd guy had in total points. Jordan and Williams’ stats were not so far beyond their piers. Both great players though.

Should Darrelle Revis make the Hall of Fame, his 29 career INTs would be fewest of any cornerback who has been enshrined: Lowest amount of INTs by HOF corners:

      Roger Wehrli 40
      Mike Haynes 46
      Jimmy Johnson 47
      Herb Adderley 48
      Mel Renfro 52
      Deion Sanders 53
      ——————————————–
People just stopped throwing to Revis side of the field. Ints are a bad litmus for a DB, or at least bad if used only on its own. I think Revis is considerable just in terms of dominance in his prime as these others.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

One of my personal favorite CBs of all-time was Nnamdi Asomugha… the same can be said for him in terms of very rarely did a QB throw his way.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For a few years you could argue Asomugha was just as good as Revis or better. He had 8 INTs one season and teams stopped throwing his way.

Absolutely agreed, Tim. Asomugha was the very definition of a shutdown CB.

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, didn’t know Asomugha got into acting. Didn’t he all of sudden hit a wall and wasn’t the same player and that’s why he retired? He did play for 11 years so it’s understandable. That’s a long time in a grueling game at a very tough position to play.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kelly Washington played Kay Amin in The Last King of Scotland which was a great movie based on a true story.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

When Asomugha went to the Eagles, they played him in a zone scheme. He didn’t hit a wall, he just wasn’t a zone CB.

Shanadouche did the same thing to my man Champ Bailey after trading Clinton Portis for him. Champ sucked that year, being he, too, wasn’t a zone CB. Shanadouche changed to a man-to-man system the next season, and Champ once again flourished as he had in Washington.

I cannot say enough about the player having to fit the scheme… particularly when it comes to DBs.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gotcha! Scheme definitely matters for many different defenders. Some can play in any scheme, some can’t because it doesn’t suit their strengths. Like Wake being a 3-4 OLB and dropping into coverage. That’s a waste of his ability. You can say the same thing about Quinn.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Precisely! You’ve got it.

  73. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s really hard to gauge a CB solely by INT’s, especially when opposing QB’s stop throwing in that CB’s direction. In years past, I don’t think QB’s did that. Think of it like the shift in baseball, how it’s taking away hits from pull hitters.

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, definitely check out The last King of Scotland, it’s about Ugandan dictator Idi Amin played by Forest Whitaker who is great in it. James McAvoy plays a Scottish doctor that Amin hires as his personal doctor in the 1970’s. I think you’ll love it because it’s a historical and political movie.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  75. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

I really DIG movies based on historical events. One of my faves is “Dark Prince: the True Story of Dracula” (I’ve shared this before with others). It’s not about the Halloween character, it’s about the life of Vlad Dracul III… the truth of the man, not the myth that Bram Stoker immortalized.

You can actually see where so many of the Dracula legends come from. It’s a story of the mid-century Crusades, where the Sultan and the Pope were trying to influence the far eastern regions of Europe in their power struggle.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah apparently had we taken a RB in the 2nd it was going to be Derrick Henry. The plan from what i heard was to take a CB in the first, Hargreaves or Apple and then RB in the second, but Tunsil falling to us changed that plan so we picked back up with CB in the second and RB in the third.

    • D's avatar D says:

M13 the problem with movies based on historical events is that a lot of time, especially stories like Dracula or William Wallace for example is over that amount of time they have become more legend than history so when you watch the move, its nice and all but going back to research the actual event you find it to not be as pretty and romanticized as you were expecting if your basis is only the movies. A lot of what we have from those kind of historical sources is all subjective too because all you have recorded is usually from the vantage point of the few who were educated enough to record it and many times were told how to record it. Hero’s are sometimes made to look like villains in recorded history and vice versa.

Quite correct, which is why I like movies based on true HISTORY (and books), not the histrionics of liberal Hollywood.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sometimes… Hollywood movies don’t go political and they just tell the story. All movies are screenplays for entertainment purposes, not all hardcore facts. Hollywood always wants a love story or a parent saving their child aspect even if it wasn’t part of the real story. You can read/see between the lines though. 🙂

Some movies are really well done and others that try to push an agenda come up lame and we all see it, even the ones who want to agree with it. Forced bullshit isn’t good for anyone.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Absolutely, man. Again, I really do like movies based on TRUE history. There’s no doubt that there is some form of sensationalism in these movies, but the truer they are to historical documents, the MORE I love them.

Steve, I like Howard over Apple and Drake over Henry who I don’t think will last long the way he runs. Drake is a quick – look for daylight type runner, where Henry smashes into people. We’ll see who is more productive over the long haul.

I hope y’all understand why I’ve been frustrated with the way we draft (long, big DBs to play man-to-man/jam-ball), vs the way we play (PREDOMINANTLY zone, off ball coverage).

The dysfunction between management/coaching/players is most palpable, to put it lightly. But once we began to play more man-to-man late in the season, we saw phenomenal results (see Xavien Howard, as one mere example).

Ya DON’T draft big, man-to-man DBs to play in a zone scheme, DAMMIT! Omar Kelly disagrees with this assessment, but he is what he is… a rodeo clown who fully supports Colin Kaepernick’s actions. Omar still supports Seanathan Smith playing in a zone scheme, while he’s in jail, SMH.
