Camp Battles – DE

For 2018, the Miami Dolphins will definitely have a new look on the defensive line, especially at defensive end.  Most notably, on March 2nd, the Dolphins traded for Rams DE Robert Quinn, sending a 4th RD pick and swapped 6th RD picks to the Rams.   What the Dolphins are probably hoping for is the 10.5 sacks he achieved in ’14 as a true DE, or the 19 sacks he got in 2013, but the Dolphins would love something in between the two.  Cam Wake returns at the age of 36, but we all know and understand that Wake treats his body like a temple, and is in prime physical condition.   Charles Harris will be entering his 2nd season, and although he won’t be a starter, the theme at DT also applies to DE, so there will be plenty of rotation going on, and Charles Harris will get plenty of opportunities to show some improvement.  Also returning this season is Andre Branch, who had a down season last year as he was maligned by minor injuries.  William Hayes also returns, and although he was also hampered by injuries last season, Hayes continues to be a productive player in run support and is probably our best edge setter.

Robert Quinn RDE – 6’4 250

Although we will be rotating players often, Robert Quinn will likely be starting on the right side.  If Quinn is healthy, specifically his back, he could be a huge help to the Dolphins defense.  Last season used as an OLB in the Rams 3-4 alignment, Quinn managed 8.5 sacks, along with 32 total tackles with 2 FF’s and 2 FR’s.  If Quinn can give the Dolphins production like he had in 2013 or 2014, this defense will be significantly better than last year.  Unfortunately, it’s been 4 years since he’s done that, but I admire the Dolphins gamble on the former All-Pro DE.

________________________________________________________________________

William Hayes LDE – 6’3 278

Hayes played in 10 games for the Dolphins last season and although he didn’t start, he’s our best run defending end.  Hayes will also play some DT, and he will do that on obvious passing downs to give the defense  some more of a rush from the middle.  Whether he starts or not is unimportant, Hayes will definitely be leaned on for help on the DL, whether it’s at LE or DT.

_________________________________________________________________________

Andre Branch RDE – 6’5 263

Branch had 14 starts last year, but as I previously mentioned, he is 2017 season was marred by minor injuries.  Branch’s tackle total dropped from almost 50 to 23, and his sack total was down from 5.5 to 4.5.  The Dolphins would be happy with his 2016 production or better, and if healthy, Branch may well be the starter, as they save Robert Quinn for pass rush duties.

_________________________________________________________________________

Charles Harris RDE – 6’3 250

Last year’s first RD pick showed some potential although overall it was not an overwhelmingly successful season.  While the rookie showed some explosive get off, he managed only 2 sacks, but did get 23 QB hurries.  This season, some of those hurries need to turn into sacks.  The Dolphins have enough talent at DE that Hayes won’t need to be leaned on heavily, but there’s no question they need to bring him along from last season.  The 23YO will definitely get his pass rushing chances, but he will also get some work in the run game too. It’s time for Harris to start developing into a complete player, and not just a pass rush specialist.

___________________________________________________________________________

Cameron Malveaux DE – 6’5 276

The big Houston Cougars DE showed some flashes last season, mostly in preseason action.  He definitely has good size, and the 2 sport athlete (Basketball, Football) has the athleticism to play DE.   The 2017 UDFA will get his shot to make the team, but the considerable depth after the Quinn trade will make it more difficult.  At worst, Malveaux is a developmental player worthy of the PS.

___________________________________________________________________________

Jonathan Woodard DE – 6’6 271

Woodard was a 2016 7th RD draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars.  The Jaguars cut him, and then the Atlanta Falcons picked him up and put him on the PS only to release him from the PS which enabled the Dolphins to pick him up and place him on the Dolphins PS.  Woodard recorded 15 sacks in 24 (16 starts) games at Central Arkansas, so he certainly made the most of his opportunities there.  Another DE with the right size and athleticism who needs to be brought along and developed.  Not to be repetitive, but with the current depth, Woodard faces a high climb to make the team.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Claudy Mathieu DE – 6’6 250

The former California-Pennsylvania and Notre Dame (Ohio) Falcons player came into the NFL last season as a 25YO rookie.  Another player will excellent physical traits, but a long way to go to being a finished product.  The Dolphins picked up Mathieu as an UDFA this season. At the moment, Mathieu is a longshot to make the cut.

______________________________________________________________________________

Quincy Redmon DE – 6’5 240

Redmon was signed by the Dolphins as a 2018 UDFA.  The former Fairmont College Fighting Falcon DE was a 2016 was named All-MEC 1st team defensive lineman with 52 total tackles and 12 sacks.  Injuries sidelined Redmon in 2017 as a Senior as he missed the final 5 games.  Another athletic specimen who faces an uphill climb to make the roster.

Landry’s TDs were all less than 10 yds which indicates good play design and should be easy to replace. It’s not like Landry was out there creating these TDs with RAC and/or breaking people off in the open field.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That was it. There was also the one he caught the ball about 5 yds past the LOS, ran east to west, broke some tackles, then took it up the sideline. Not sure that was a TD though. I think that one was about more than 70 yds if memory serves.

Part of me wonders if other teams think they are going to gleen a bit of knowledge from those players into why the Pats system works so well. I dont know what the big deal is, the secret is he gets them all to do their own individual job and with all of them doing it the team does well. Gray was a quarterback for Minnesota but he wasn’t a good one. He actually played very little at quarterback. He’s probably more of an h-back than a tight end, but I don’t want to start that whole argument again!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No argument here, We used Gray very much like an h-back, he even blocked in the backfield like an h-back.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we’re past Gray being a QB and know what he is for us. He’s shown the ability to line up and TE, H-back and FB. He’s also shown to be a good short yardage runner and he’s a core STs player.

The same for Derby, he’s been developing as a TE since he was drafted in 2015 by the Pats in the 6th round. The coaches seem to like his potential.

But HAD to start Gesicki, (which may be accurate )

      But
There WAS an individual at my spot that has already been ragging hard on Gesicki since drafting him instead of the other small school TE..

Anytime the Dolphins draft a guy that’s not his absolute favorite,
An instant decade long hatred would surface against the guy the Dolphins did pick!!!

I agree – He seems to think Escobar , Gray and Derby will be the TE’s and Gesicki and Smythe are projects that are at least a year away
    —————————————————-
I think Gray makes it because he is the best we have that can give us a traditional FB role player when we need one, without losing the versatility of a offensive weapon. I kind of wouldnt mind also keeping Escobar but i just dont see us carrying 5 TE’s and i really feel Smythe and Gesicki are locks for the 53.

D, on teams trading with the cheats, none of the players will ever be able to give up the secrets of their success, because only belicheat knows them.

When their OC was set to become the Colts HC, belicheat met with him and said, if you stay I’ll show you everything .

This leads to speculation the big cheats days are numbered. I give him 2019 as the latest that he’ll coach.
    ——————————————–
I dont really think there is a secret lol. I think people just assume there is some hidden handbook, some sort of super secret recipe and that people who have played for him know something. I definaely feel like you do and realize the secret is Belichick.

I agree as well 2019, 2020…. but it isnt far off. I know he isnt going to want to rebuild the entire thing so if they dont have an heir for Brady by the time Brady hangs it up, Belichick is hanging it up the same time as Brady. Thats going to set the pats back a decade at least.

Only thing i can think of when it comes to the idea of Belichick staying after Brady is that Belichick might want to set the record straight and show he can win with another QB. He can settle the argument and prove it was him all along. Im just not sure at this point he wants to suffer through a losing season if he doesn’t have a legit QB prospect to step in.

He doesnt have a lot left to accomplish anyways, he’s pretty much the GOAT, definitely the GOAT of modern football. Ill be very glad when he decides he wants to walk away.

    ————————————–
I dont think Duarte ever makes the team. He isnt dynamic as a receiver and he doesnt offer almost anything as a blocking TE. He probably would be a better slot receiver, but right now we are pretty solid there as well. He just doesnt have a good way to get on this team with the guys thats in front of him. Obviously the coaching staff doesn’t think greatly of him, because they used two picks on TE’s. If they had more confidence in him they wouldn’t have picked two. I think Escobar has a better chance f making the team than Duarte. I have really wanted to see him out there. I was pretty excited when they drafted him to see what he could do, i just dont think its ever, or ever will work out for him with us.

    —————————————–
It will for the first little bit, but if he doesnt keep at the workout regimen his muscles will start to atrophy and all that is going to slow down and eventually the amount he is eating is going to be too much for the amount of muscle mass and then the fat comes. Also if he is losing it that fast, a lot of that is muscle he is losing from not working out so hard.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So in other words he’s probably a fat slob who weighs less than he used to but looks worse anyway?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No there are some pics of him out there where he just looks slimmer. The guy is 6-6 and was never overweight. But instead of weighing say 315 he’s 265 which is a healthier weight. He’s been losing this weight for probably 8 months when he went down with a season ending triceps injury in October.

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

This is what I said in my Camp Battles – TE article, and I still feel this way

“At the moment of this writing, the Dolphins have 6 tight ends on the roster, but realistically, at most we will carry 4, and even more likely 3. The two guaranteed to stick are the most recent draftees, 2nd RD pick Mike Gesicki and 4th RD pick Durham Smythe. After Gesicki and Smythe, the coaches seem to really like A.J. Derby who was picked up last season after DEN waived him. There is also 5 YR veteran MarQueis Gray, and recent pickup Gavin Escobar who played for the Cowboys for 4 seasons. Also still hanging around is Thomas Duarte, Dolphins 2016 7th RD draft pick. We have better depth at TE than any time in recent memory, and this should be a fun battle to see play out because the 3rd and possibly 4th spots should be really competitive.”

    • D's avatar D says:

I agree 4, a to me that 4 is Derby, Smythe, Gesicki, and Gray. Like i said though i kind of hope for 5 and keeping Escobar, i just dont see where we could cut from to keep 5, and if i had to cut one from those 5 its going to be Escobar and not Gray for the simple fact of his versatility.

Aquib Talib is on a show me witht hem so if they want to keep him they would have to find some money for that too. I don’t know about that, man. I think Martin was all good until he got bullied at the pro level… he likely was never bullied before, unless it was in elementary school.

But what is CLEAR is that Martin had some issues and was soft. I’m not sure comparing McCray to Martin is accurate in this case. People are different.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

My only point was that turned out how to be how Martin felt after a lot of years. Seemed to me McCray was smart enough to decide that football was not what he wanted to do given who he was and his options. Could not respect that any more.

And as to Martin, keep in mind he had NFL problems in the NFL and personally after he left the Phins. Was also born to a power family and went to an elite high school. He came from a Harvard generation schooled family. And yes people are different. Wasn’t saying McCray was Martin other than less than full desire for football.

Did they really? Huh! It would seem that they still don’t have the right personnel with Suh and Donald as the DT’s. I thought I remembered reading that Suh didn’t ever want to play NT and I don’t see 6′ nothing 284 lb Donald as a classic NT either.

I think Suh agreed to play some NT but it’s possible they move their DL around. One of the reasons the Rams traded us Quinn is because they don’t believe he’s a 3-4 OLB even though he had 8.5 sacks. But he’s more of a classic 4-3 DE that fits our defense.

  61. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I see Suh listed as 313 on the rams website. That’s 12lbs more than he was listed at last year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  63. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The thing about Aaron Donald is he’s very strong and super quick. He’s not easy to block anywhere he lines up. So he could probably play some NT too because he’ll be in the backfield often.

Zierlein had Mike McCray rated as a 5.36, a NFL caliber backup and ST’er. He has Ginda as a 4.97, Camp Body. Ginda according to Zierlein is a instinctual tackler, with good upper body strength and burst quickness, but someone that plays off technique and if OL get into his body, he gets blown out. He did say he is a good outside edge setter however. McCray was considered a downhill thumper, decent coverage, good play recognition and makes good transition from run to pass. Not good at keeping containment on the outside as he lacked range. He also said he get handsy in man coverage and has an injury history that may cause concern. So this is what we had and what we have in replacement.

I read an article yesterday that said sports and specifically fan loyalty is almost masochistic by nature. They registered people levels of happiness throughout a day and then determined on average what a persons happiness was and different times of the day.

They said that they tested their happiness leading up to a sporting event and they found that people were a slightly happier before the event began, and if their team won this went up to 3-5 points (on a 100 point sale) happier than normal, but if they lost they were 6.5-10 point below their normal.

They said the high number on the range for the win, was attributed to fans whose teams normally dont do well, and the elation they get from a win, and the lower number on the loss scale represented that fans unhappiness with a loss.

For teams whose team are perpetual winners, the numbers are reversed, and the lower number represented their elation with a win, and the upper number represented their disappointment with a loss.

So all in all, being a fan of sports to be a fan of a perpetual losing team is easier game to game, and comes with higher highs and lower lows, but you never get the real enjoyment of your teams success. Having a successful team overall is nice, but game to game it comes with higher lows and lower highs. in essence, you are destined for disappointment either way.

I think that helps explain the status of our team. We are a franchise with so much previous success that we dont get to enjoy the game to game higher highs, and lower lows because we are looking forward to sason success like a successful franchise would, and yet we havent been a successful franchise for so long we dont get the ordinary payout at the end that allows us to enjoy what we have done.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sounds kinda right. I think the expectations and highs and lows change dramatically though during the season. In the beginning, when the Mets started 11-1, I thoroughly enjoyed each win, and then as the losses started, each one hurt. Then we fought back a bit, and my expectations rose again, and then the losses really started coming, and now I don’t even care about the losses or the wins, just the individual performances, and I enjoy if they play well and win, but the win itself doesn’t mean anything to me big picture. I think the same thing has happened with the Dolphins too, they give us hope, and at least in the last decade, have had some awful late season collapses where they just needed a win or two to get in, and couldn’t get it done, or just a bad season like last year where the mid to end of year losses didn’t bother me, I almost preferred the losses.

  86. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Stopping the run is a team stat and takes the whole team to do well. One DT doesn’t change that. Suh, Donald or anybody. MAYBE a great MLB in a 4-3 who is asked to make 150 tackles a season. Teams love DTs who can put pressure on the pocket. Run stopping has become secondary. They’re not signing Suh to plug holes. They are signing him because now teams will have to choose who they double team…Suh or Donald…and both of them can dominate when singled up.

  87. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
I think most people are always impacted more by losses than by wins. I know it’s true for me. When I played sports, I’d carry a loss for a week. I’d enjoy a win for a few hours and then it’s done. Lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

This may seem selfish, but when I play sports now, and I play well, I enjoy it even if we lose (Unless it’s an important game). If we win and I play poorly, I fel bad about playing poorly, but if it’s an important game, happy about the win. If we lose an important game, like playoffs, I’m mad no matter what. Winning playoff games, the high lasts quite a while, and championships, even longer. I find those very satisfying, because it takes a lot to win them.

Thank you. I am having a good time and I’ve earned it. Doing 2 jobs for about 6 weeks, the extra one being payroll where I work is stressful. Screw that up and everyone knows about it! Add that into being a single mom, I chose that myself so no complaints but it can still be trying at times. My son had surgery on his rt foot in early June, was in a cast for 6 weeks, that came off last Thursday. Left for the beach bright and early last Saturday. Today would have been my parents 60th anniversary, we’ve got my mom here with us too. My son leaves for camp the day after we are back from here and my daughter leaves for college a couple of days after that. I went to college orientation with her a couple of weeks ago, she was on crutches, tore a ligament in her ankle 2 days before it started(horse riding mishap). Just got her a horse trailer, it’s what she wanted for HS graduation. Finding the one that met all her requirements was exhausting. It has been a busy summer for sure and I’m looking forward to a winning season this year. Doubt I’ll make the fest. I do want to come but my son won’t talk with his dad much less stay with him for a weekend. He’s not into football like me so bringing him isn’t really an option. I’m happy and doing great and hope everyone else here is as well.

Lol. I’ve worn a groove in the road between home and Lexington KY the last 2 months. It’s where my son’s surgery was, at Shriners, also where my daughter is going to college at UK. I’ve gone there at least once a week, every week the past 2 months since his cast had to be changed every 2 weeks after his surgery. A 2 1/2 hr drive each way. Whew! Glad that’s over!
