Camp Battles – DT

No more Ndamukong Suh.  He’s in Los Angeles, supposedly next to Aaron Donald, who’s holding out.  If I haven’t read at least 20 articles written by writers outside of FLA who work for major companies as ESPN, CBS, NFL.com etc that proclaim that because Suh is gone, this defense just can’t be any good.  Let’s face facts, this Dolphins defense wasn’t that good with him, so to say his loss will be monumental doesn’t register for me.    Enough of Suh, because we’re looking at what we DO have, not what we don’t.  As has been said ad nauseam, we’re going to be rotating players on the D-line much more than we have in the past, specifically in the NS era, where he played 971 snaps a season, which is just too much, even for a top 5 DT in the NFL.

Honestly, I say this with no malice, but I think it’s very possible that an average football fan from a different team might not be able to name 1 DT on our current roster.  There are no “stars”, and besides the Akeem Spence, who we picked up in a trade with the Lions for a 2019 conditional 7th RD pick, our oldest DT at the moment is 25 years old, and that’s probably our most talented one, Jordan Phillips.  With the current philosophy of heavy rotation, the pressure won’t fall on one particular player, although Jordan Phillips will be expected to play at a higher level now, as he’s now “the man”.  Let’s take a look at who we have . . .

Jordan Phillips DT – 6’6 341 – 25YO

The 2015 2nd RD pick (Pick#52) came to the Dolphins with a reputation as a DT who has all the physical gifts you could ask for, except the “inconsistent motor” tag.  Oh, the dreaded on/off switch and the always included “if this guy ever decides he wants to play, watch out!”.  He’s had 3 seasons of “cruising in my opinion, he hasn’t really shown himself to be a consistent player, still “showing flashes”, but nothing totally tangible to grab at. Maybe if he’s rotating in and out more, he’ll give better effort while he’s out there, and I’m sure the coaches are hoping for just that.  It’s like a starting pitcher who is thrown into the bullpen, he can just let go for a couple of innings and throw as hard as he can, because he doesn’t have to try and go 9 innings, only 2.  58 total tackles (37 solo) and 4.5 sacks tells me he’s been playing to stay fresh for 9 innings.  Time to go out there and kill it every snap young man!

________________________________________________________________

Davon Godchaux DT – 6’3 315 23YO

Godchaux was such a pleasant surprise last season.  Last year’s 5th RD pick (178th) had a very promising season.  This kid has a great motor, and the results are there to see. He can tackle too, and last year, Godchaux finished with 40 tackles (26 solo).  That’s production.  Godchaux didn’t register a sack, but I saw him around the QB just missing a few times.  This kid has me hopeful, but I love the overachievers.  I thought Godchaux showed some good explosion, but he also needs to be more disciplined, as I saw him offsides quite a few times.  Those penalties are killer, and I’m sure the coaches are working with him.  I look for a little growth from Godchaux, and maybe even a couple of sacks this season.

________________________________________________________________

Akeem Spence DT – 6’1 307  26YO

Spence is the grizzled veteran here, at the old age of 26.  This just goes to show you how young this DT rotation is now.  Spence is a 5 year veteran who came up with Tampa Bay Bucs for 4 seasons, and played for the Detroit Lions last season.  Dolphins DL coach Kris Kocurek was in Detroit last year, and liked Spence, so the Dolphins brought him in.  Spence is a capable player who’s used to being rotated in.  Last season with the Lions, Spence had a nice season, 39 total tackles (19 solo) along with 3 sacks.  Pretty solid for a 3rd guy in, which just goes to show you the potential effectiveness of rotating players more often.  I think Spence fits in perfectly here, a guy who knows how to play the game, teach the young guys, doesn’t have a “ME” attitude, and has the ability to start if necessary.  Great pickup!

_______________________________________________________________

Vincent Taylor DT – 6’3 306  24YO

The Dolphins drafted Taylor in the 6th RD last season, and I think they got exceptional value from 2 DT’s taken in the 5th and 6th RD’s.  Taylor didn’t play as much as Godchaux, but this year he will be in the running for some more snaps, provided he earns them.  Taylor played in 13 games, finishing with 18 total tackles (11 solo).  He’s not definitely in, but I think it’s Taylor’s spot to lose at this point.

_______________________________________________________________

Gabe Wright DT – 6’3 309  26YO

Wright is a former 2015 4th RD pick by the Detroit Lions.  He is definitely at the crossroads here, this being his 3rd team in 3 years in the NFL.  The Lions waived him after spending a 4th RD pick on him in early September 2016.  He played in 7 games his rookie season, but was unimpressive.   The Browns picked him up and put him on their PS.  The Browns finally activated Wright in 2016 after appearing in just 5 games, and then the Browns waived him.  The Eagles signed Wright of June 2017, then cut him in September.  The Dolphins signed Wright at that point and signed him to the PS, where he was finally activated the last game of the season in ’17. This kid has work to do, and he better get at it fast, or he won’t be long for the NFL, which in some cases means Not For Long.  BTW, Wright was a projected 2nd or 3rd RD pick in the 2015 draft.

_______________________________________________________________

Jamiyus Pittman DT – 6’1 319  23 YO

Pittman was an UDFA pickup this season after he played right in our backyard at Central Florida.  Piitman played both outside and inside at CF, but he will definitely be inside as a DT in the pros. Pittman is going to have to play his best football if he wants to crack this roster.  Depending on how many DT’s we carry, last year we carried 4 last season, but keep in mind that DE William Hayes moves to DT in some packages.  If we do carry 4, that means Pittman will have to leapfrog both Wright and Taylor, a tall order.  If we carry 5, which is pretty likely, especially if the plan is to keep rotating players in, he has a better shot.  Pittman was pretty productive at CF, finishing with 138 total tackles (66 solo) along with 13 sacks in 4 seasons.

_______________________________________________________________

Anthony Moten DT – 6’4 315 23 YO

Moten is another UDFA that played in FLA, Moten played for the Hurricanes.  Moten was a part time player at Miami, not a starter, but that’s fine considering he would just be part of the rotation early on.  Moten was not a combine invitee.  Moten played in 27 games in 4 seasons at Miami, finishing with 38 total tackles (14 solo) along with 1.5 sacks.  Moten is obviously a longshot to make the cut.

_______________________________________________________________

So that’s where we stand at DT.  It’s still possible we pick up a veteran after early season cuts, but my guess is we probably carry 5 DT’s, and I think those will be Phillips, Godchaux, Spence, Taylor, and whichever DT shows the most in the preseason.  Wright has the pedigree, and this could be his last chance to get his career in gear, so I give him the slight edge, with Pittman right behind him.

Ryan was always pretty solid athletically, but it seemed he was lacking something in the football knowledge category. After being out the past year plus I don’t get the feeling that’s true any longer. Cant wait to see him shred it this year.
    ——————————————–
So, as i have said before there are things Tanny wasnt great at that i dont think are going to magically jump ahead since those things take game time to improve on, but there are a few things i think that being on the sideline and spending time in the QB room with Gase and Cutler that may have given him chances to improve even while he was out. The big deal to me is how will the brace affect him (i have heard some of the braces are hardly noticeable), how well has the re-hab gone, and how fast can grow in the areas he was weak at. I think the time off probably did him some good and some bad, so we will just have to see what he made of it.

The OL just needs to do their job, they don’t need to be great, but they cant be last year’s line. The key for Ryan is making quick decisions and getting the ball out fast, if he can do that the D will adjust and defend the 2.5 second release (play cautiously) and everything else will open up.

When your QB is getting the ball out quick it alleviates a lot of stress from the OL, because they can relax and just play, and don’t have to worry so much about the speed/bull rushers that aren’t going to get to the QB anyways. When they don’t have to think too much, they won’t commit as many false starts.

The receivers can do their part by getting open for a change, and of course presnap penalties need to be reduced by all.

You are very correct Sir! As the PFF post last article shows if the line can give him time he Tanny can be very good.

    • D's avatar D says:

You do realize that rating is based on what he does and does not relate to the OL right? That rating basically says if he gets his read right and gets the ball out fast he is accurate and successful but when he doesn’t he doesn’t make good adjustments. Thier rating system is based off what the player does in the whatever scenario it is and what they believe was the right decision to make.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

it is not “their rating” it is the standard passer rating that has been around since long before PFF existed.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

As you can see, when he gets rid of it quick he’s very good, because he doesn’t have to think, he just executes his 1st option from the play called. What I was getting at was him doing this more often, and not just throwing to his 1st option, but actually reading the D.

      • D's avatar D says:

A lot of that is his pre-snap read of the defense. Most the really good QB’s are strong with that part of their game, he isnt. Thios is one of the things though that standing on the sideline and spending the year with Gase and Cutler might help him. That might be one of his leap forward skills.

    Reply
No, you are partially right. what that stat shows is when he gets the ball out in under 2.5 seconds his rating was 109.1 when it was over 2.6 seconds it dropped considerably. What this cut off does not show is what the play was, what the routes were and how long those routes took to develop. (deeper passes are by nature less accurate for ALL quarterbacks and take longer to develop)

the line holding up for another 1/2 a second on average COULD increase his overall performance because he won’t be running for his life. Again, it depends on the play called and the routes run. Read #1 MIGHT be a deep route (probably IS) which will take longer to develop. If the line doesn’t give him the time to make it through his reads then that is not on him. Unless you want him to disregard what Gase wants and just throw to his dump off and not be patient and wait for his deep reads to develop.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

And you are also COMPLETELY WRONG because the passer rating is not the quarter back’s rating. it is the TEAM passer rating. If a WR drops a perfectly placed pass it turns a 153.8 play to a 0.00 play.

This is a false statement as well. YOU do not know what option he went to on ANY of the 239 plays listed but the odds are against them all being the first read.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

it’s a generalized statement, if he’s getting rid of the ball quickly, then he’s mostly throwing to his first option. D brought up a good point though, that his presnap read is going to help with this.

  8. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Great take on the DT’s Mike E. Hoping for the best and that they step up, but has to be about the least strong position group on the team. If Phllips becomes what he has flashed at times that consistently, but that is a lot to hope for.

Same time, thinking not having the constant push forward Suh in there might actually help our run D. Yeah he’d make spectacular in the backfield stop at times, but too many times saw teams plan runs to the spot where a normal DT would be and Suh wasn’t.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I completely agree. Suh would be in the backfield and have to turn around and chase the play from behind because the play was designed to go around where Suh would have been if he wasn’t penetrating so far into the backfield.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was almost like setting up a screen pass. And am sure the blockers would “help” him penetrate on given given plays.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Stanger – Definitely not our best unit, but the LB’s should be better, so that will help. Maybe the unit itself takes some pride in themselves, and not just Suh and the udder guys, know what I mean?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Unit is what think it will be. Lots of fresh bodies being thrown in and out with max effort on each play, but also with “clog the middle” instructions. And let the DEs do the destruction on pass plays and the LBs on the run ones. But isn’t that how most teams do it? Suh was a special and most different talent.

Rock, there is no passer rating for before and after 2.5 seconds, there is passer rating. Anytime they are saying rating its their rating scale, thats why you were wrong with the thing about the red zone shit. If you see something where PFF is talking about rating, its their scale bro.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      WRONG AGAIN D

      Read it.

      Passer rating not PFF rating

All they did was separate passes that got out faster or slower than 2.5 seconds Same with my previous statement that you just disputed Passer rating was specifically stated. They were not referencing their rating system.

      They specifically say Passer Rating

  11. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

    Good right Mike.

I think the DT group may be highly motivated group this year. Maybe tired of the Suh talk, and out to prove themselves as under the radar and under rated. I am looking forward to how they perform, and I love the rotation idea in that everyone stays fresh and motivated. I think the U of Miami used to do that in the JJ days back in their hay day. They just kept throwing fresh, quick bodies on the field.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I equate DT to a center in the NBA, if you have a center that shoots from 3 pt range and hangs out there, hes going to maybe have some nice pt totals, but isn’t under the basket enough to get high rebounds and blocks. At DT when you don’t stay close to the LOS you may get more sacks and TFLs and look like an All Pro, but you also may not be doing you job of containment on running plays.

I’d think our run D would get better with the rotation, and guys staying in position.

  13. 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

I don’t see Phillips as a slacker (no ones word here).. I mean like Godchaux (jumping off sides displays effort) but lack of discipline… A guy jumps off sides and wants to be sure he doesn’t do it again anytime soon, so he might go a lil easier of the following plays..

Think it was o16 that Phillips was the DL with the most off sides penalties with I believe 12, those were plays of effort that didn’t come to be, and the following plays May have been the ones that folks see him APPEAR to be slacking, (along with actual plays that he didn’t make something happen), leading to (he must be a slacker)…

I think it was Godchaux that had three consecutive off sides penalties last year giving the opposition 15 yards without a snap let alone three snaps..

LOVE Godchaux, just needs more discipline..
I’d imagine that Phillips had back to back offsides early on too, but with a lil more experience has learned that “””those penalties are killers”””, so he’s trying to be in more control of his slightly more disciplined efforts…

Sometimes the O makes a good block and Phillips/whoever gets a lack of effort tab put on him, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him flat out not try!!! Though at 341 pounds in triple digit temps, therevprobably are times when he doesn’t look like a full go, so again he gets the slacker tab for a play or two which makes folks think he does it for 40 to however many plays a game per year…

I’d imagine he’ll have a good (contract year), even if he jumps off sides, gets blocked well, or even at 341 takes it not quite at full speed here and there!!!

Love Spence too, I have him starting next to Phillips, but starting doesn’t really matter if they’re all gonna get in the neighborhood of similar reps (long-term) via games/season…

    Like Vincent too!!!

Had Wright on my 52 for various reasons, suggested above (rotation, reps, Phillips contract year, etc, etc

I like the rotational plan of keeping everybody, especially Phillips FRESH!!!

Jus suggesting that at 341 (20 plus pounds bigger than the next biggest, & 25 pounds more than anyone still around that he played alongside of in o17), he probably just APPEARS at times that he’s not goin as fast as others which can probably be a misjudgement of him even on play one!!!

LOL, that too……….. I was sure I shut the right breaker.

Mike you very well may have. Sometimes you can get shocked by the neutral wire which is often shared with another circuit so you can have “circuit breaker #1 off, but it shares a neutral with #3 so you can still get shocked by the power coming back to ground on the shared neutral.

That’s why unless you know what the hell you are doing you hire someone! 🙂

And you are also COMPLETELY WRONG because the passer rating is not the quarter back’s rating. it is the TEAM passer rating. If a WR drops a perfectly placed pass it turns a 153.8 play to a 0.00 play.
    _________________________________________________________________

Passer rating is a team rating is BS….while a rec may drop a ball from time to time he will also make great catches and break up picks, seems like a wash to me. and why do all the great QBs have great passer ratings?

Passer Rating is a very relevant stat, chances are if you are in the top 10 you have an 80 % chance to make the post season, if you are in the top 4 you may be playing for a title

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I happen to agree with this. It’s as fair as attributing wins and losses to a pitcher. Jacob deGrom is the first pitcher since they started tabulating ERA’s, which is over 100 years ago to have an ERA under 2.00, and have less than 7 wins to this point in the season. Stats aren’t always fair, but they still count as they are.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

not BS. the QB has a HUGE Part of the rating because he handles every pass, but it is not a “QB rating” it is a rating of the passing game. I posted the example a couple of weeks ago. If a WR catches a pass 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage that traveled only 1 yard forward and then runs 80 yards for a TD the passer rating for that play is a 153.8 if the wr drops this pass it is a 0.00. ALL dependent on the WR. It CANNOT be a quarterback rating.

It can be and IS a very good indicator of a QB’s performance because he is 50% of every throw. so yeah great QB’s have high passer ratings. they are 50% of the equation.

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  46. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

D, shared neutrals are a common practice in commercial electric. You can share a neutral with different phases. Meaning if you have a two phase power (typical for residential power) you can share a neautral between phase A & B but not between two A phases or two B phases. If you have a three phase system (typical for commercial buildings that require more power) you can share a neutral between A, B & C phases. If you have ever seen a romex cable with a red and a black wire in it, it only has ONE white wire and usually a bare copper wire (ground) the red and black “share” the white on the way back to ground.

The neutral is ACTUALLY the ground. It is just connected at the service entrance location so there are no mistakes or chances to get stuck in the circuit. . The electricity LITERALLY goes into the ground on alternating current systems after it passes through the appliances or light fixtures. .

    • D's avatar D says:

Hmmm i guess i kind of get it now, and i have seen romex cable but ive never worked with it, as my experience has only been with outlets, switches and some basic cabling/re-orging room pulls.

A QB or passer rating whatever is an efficiency stat. Of course it has an impact on success, it tells you how the QB play was. However, it does not tell the story of a QB facing ridiculous pressure.

Watching the games says more than stats much of the time. Cam Wake could have 1 tackle and no sacks in a game but you saw him bringing pressure and forcing quick throws all day. Is there a stat for not allowing a QB to throw out of 7 step drops to get the ball down the field? Know what I mean?

2012 is when we drafted Tanny and i can remember posting about drafting Pouncey the year before that which was 2011, i can remember that because up to the draft we were thought to be going to draft Ingram and i had thought it would be Pouncey and wanted it to be Pouncey. Part of me remembers the 2010 draft from FME, but i think i am remembering discussions from the SS and getting confused as FME. I can remember posting there up to the 20111 draft because i remember doing mock drafts and remember the mocks at that time drawing near draft time had us picking Ingram, up until like the week of and a lot switched to it being Pouncey. I basically memory mapped it back that way. Im pretty sure about it, though its possible im having a FME memory and its actually an SS memory, but im pretty confident about it.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was Mr. Bungle until some retard created blogs pretending to be me and since Mr. Bungle is a trademark I changed names. LOL

Why is a Pollock hating on Jews…. There’s a joke in there somewhere i just know it…. I remember Phimanski, he could be a terd but he could be a decent dude too i think. Dont know whats in those emails but it might make me rethink the decent dude part of my statement.

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – I can’t say for sure, but I have an email from Myth from December of 2011, and his email was truth1305. I guess that doesn’t guarantee it, but it doesn’t make it any less likely either. lol

Yeah, that’s true, are we getting old, or have certain people just not made the trip to this blog? lol
    ————————————-
Home has to be as old as lots of us, so i dunno maybe its the latter.

LMAO @ Son @ Ramada name!

  88. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Man that means that I was on the SS in 2006?????

Because I remember all the Ginn family jokes!

  89. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – Actually the SS blog was still going for us in Dec 2011. I swear, looking at these emails is really like looking at a time capsule.

That was the fourth one wasn’t it? The first La Quinta and D&B year? Also believe the first Toba and Dog family one. But could be all over the place.

    I can’t remember last week.

Reason why in these years the place has become more stable for years is cause of our admins. Thanks Mike, Son, Pig, Ken, Herd and Twice (who we all love but rarely see).

  93. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know the infamous “Hand Blog” was March 1st 2012. I wish like hell I could see that. lol

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I would love to be able to see the old comments boards. I know I would get a kick out of some of the old convos and fights.

I wonder if I could even tell which posts under different names were mine. I know I went under ‘Non-sequitur’ sometimes.

Knight, weren’t you someone else before Bungle??

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nope, Mr. Bungle was my first SS name when I started and I’m not sure what year that was. But like I said some of you all were already on there and I joined in. I feel like Walker was already there too.

  95. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Did people really blog under different names and troll like that much? I guess I never reallly figured it was more than a couple people. So weird.
I wish I could figure out when I first blogged at the SS. It was pre-Omar but that’s all I remember. I don’t even recall who I talked with much. Tim , ffr and Tinshaker I think. I missed the “hand incident”….doesn’t mean I can’t still give MikeE shit about it. Drama has been a part of it from day one. Lol

    • D's avatar D says:

Its significantly less drama here than even FME and FME was a big step down from SS. I can fully agree with that. Each stage we have gotten older and we have shed some drama queens so its probably a little of both and good management to boot.

      • 13kvFINS's avatar 13kvFINS says:

        What was FME??

        I didn’t jump around, I’d find a place and that’s where I’d hang..

PBP to SS to Tins to Shout & FU no Fme…

        Haa..
Did I just figure out what FME was on my own..

        Was FinsMobUnleashed originally FME??

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

        Fins mob exoduss

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

When the SS went paywall, the FME was created. (E is for exodus, as in leaving the SS). The first iteration of the ‘Mob’ with it’s own home. This place was born from the FME.
