2019 Training Camp begins TOMORROW!

This is just the start, but hey, it’s the start of the 2019 Miami Dolphins season today. Once the pads come on, this is where it finally gets real. Long gone are 3-a-days and in 2011 the collective bargaining eliminated two-a-days as well, so the brutally hard practices of yesteryear are all gone. Still, this is the closest thing to action we got, so enjoy it!

The rookies have been here since Sunday, but tomorrow the entire team, both veterans and rookies will be together as one team. I think quite a few of the rookie class will make the team, which is already a pretty young roster. We lost DT Kendrick Norton in a terrible automobile accident which took his arm and his football career, but Kendrick seems to be doing well and is out of the hospital. The Miami Dolphins have decided to pay Kendrick Norton his entire salary, a nice gesture.

There are some big camp battles, including of course the QB battle between long time vet Ryan Fitzpatrick and newly acquired 2nd year QB Josh Rosen. To me that’s the headliner. Most fans think Fitz will start the season but I believe there is a fair chance if Rosen plays well enough he may earn the job. What happens at DE is big too, because it looks like a very deficient unit at the moment, unless some guys step up and do a LOT more than they have yet in their careers. The number of sacks from the current guys is truly woeful, Tank Carradine in 5 seasons has (5.5) sacks, Nate Orchard in 4 seasons has (5) sacks, Charles Harris in 2 seasons has (3) sacks and Jonathan Woodard in 1 season has (1) sack. That’s 13 sacks combined for 4 players. Obviously in our new hybrid defense we will be rushing the passer with LB’s as well as safeties and corners, and we will need guys like Jerome Baker, Kiko Alonso, Reshad Jones, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Bobby McCain and others to be effective occasionally when they blitz. In addition, I think we can get pressure on the inside with DE/DT’s Vincent Taylor, Davon Godchaux and Christian Wilkins. If not, it’s going to be a long hard season for this defense and we will struggle to get off the field.

We have a lot of DB’s on the roster but it’s imperative that we find an effective player on the opposite side of Xavien Howard. It may be former Patriot Eric Rowe, or maybe one of our own guys step up like Jalen Davis, Cornell Armstrong, Torry McTyer or hopefully Cordrea Tankersley who is currently on the PUP list. CB Jomal Wiltz showed some flash w/o pads, we’ll see how he fares with the pads on. At safety we’re in really good shape with Reshad Jones, Minkah Fitzpatrick, T.J. McDonald, Bobby McCain (who will share slot duties as well with Minkah), and Maurice Smith and ST’s ace Walt Aikens.

On offense, it’s going to be very interesting to see what our identity is on that side of the ball. I think a lot of that will depend on who the QB is. Ryan Fitzpatrick throughout his career has been a gunslinger for better or worse. He plays a wide open type of game and always looks to push the ball downfield, sometimes recklessly so. He’s a gambler. With our offensive line a huge question mark, nothing helps a beleaguered OL better than a consistent run game. It gives them more confidence and wears down the opposing defense. Will Fitz be a game manager? It’s possible, but I’d sooner see a power run game with a play action pass game although I can’t see Fitz reining himself in. Rosen would be the better candidate to operate that type of offense, and any QB would benefit from a strong run game.

Our WR’s corps really is another huge question mark. On paper it looks better than it really is because you never know what you’ll get from Devante Parker, and Albert Wilson is coming back from a season ending hip injury that robbed him of such a promising season. Wilson was nothing short of electric while he was healthy scoring 4 TD’s on only 26 receptions, that’s a TD every 7 catches. Kenny Stills is really the only given, you know he will make some big plays although he’s never been a volume receiver having more than 60 receptions only once, his 2nd year with the Saints and Drew Brees. Regardless, he averages routinely near 15 YPC and he scores TD’s. What about the rest of the WR corps? Jakeem Grant is exciting but so far has been used in small doses. I’m not sure he’ll ever be like a Tyreek Hill although I sure wouldn’t mind if they tried. Brice Butler brings another big bodied receiver and he showed some abilities last year but only had 6 receptions for us. In his 6 years in the NFL, he’s never had more than 20 receptions. We have a few other big receivers in house, Preston Williams, newly acquired WR Saeed Blacknall and Reece Horn. All of them are 6’2 or bigger.

Last season our LB unit really picked up, a lot of that due to the return of Raekwon McMillan’s run stopping prowess and the coverage and tackling ability of rookie OLB Jerome Baker. Baker had an excellent rookie season showing excellent pass coverage skills, and for all intents and purposes, McMillan had an excellent rookie season too (1st year I/R). Kiko thrived last year not being forced to cover quite as much and turned an underrated solid season. Kiko finished with 125 total tackles (79 solo), 3 INT’s3 FF’s, 1 FR and 6 passes defensed. This a strength on our defense, and if we can generate any pass rush at all, this defense will surprise a lot of teams.

The O-line, a perennial worry, once again is exactly that. Starting LT Laremy Tunsil is one of the leagues best, but after that if could potentially fall off a cliff. Will it be Wisconsin rookie Michael Deiter at LG or swing man Chris Reed from JAX? Can Dan Kilgore hold down the C spot and be effective? It seems like Jesse Davis is going to play one of the spots on the right side but it’s yet to be determined whether it’s RG or RT. We acquired RT Jordan Mills from Buffalo, a starter of every game for the last 3 years. He was underwhelming with shorts and t-shirts, but I have a feeling once the pads come on, he’ll look a lot better. While Mills isn’t an elite pass blocker, he’s got experience and shouldn’t be a turnstile. If he does falter, Jesse Davis just might play RT and maybe of Deiter looks adequate, Chris Reed could slide over to RG with Davis playing RT. In any case, a lot has to happen to give me any kind of confidence in this unit going forward.

At RB, Kenyan Drake is primed to have a big season. Whether he’s the big volume guy as far as carries isn’t important, he should be getting more touches. He’s a HR hitter and we simply need to score more points. Scoring less than 20 PPG won’t cut it, and Drake can help with more touches. What will be fun to watch is who, if anyone, is the volume back. Kalen Ballage is back for his 2nd season and he showed some promise last season. We drafted extremely high volume back Myles Gaskin from Washington. Gaskin had nearly 1000 carries there and over 5300 yards. Lots of miles for Myles, but he potentially could get the lion’s shares of the carries. We have a couple of bowling balls on the roster as well in Kenneth Farrow and Mark Walton (who may face disciplinary action from the NFL for an off the field incident). We’ll see if either guy makes the roster.

ST’s was a solid unit all around, from place kicking with Jason Sanders and punting with Matt Haack, (Rock’s beloved) LS John Denney, and the return team of Kenyan Drake, Jakeem Grant and Kalen Ballage. All were better than average last year and hopefully that will either continue or improve.

After taking a look at the entire team, there’s a few good things that stand out, and a few problems that are hopefully fixed. DE and the O-line are the potential weaknesses, while LB, S and DT a strength. RB and WR are wld cards, because you just don’t know what you can get from this group. If Devante Parker ever plays like we thought he could when we drafted him and catches 60-80 balls with a 12+ YPC average and 8-10 TD’s, along with Stills getting his usual 6-10 TD’s, and we have a consistent run game with the trio of Drake, Ballage and Gaskin, we can be a very competitive team. As usual, lot’s of ifs. No pass rush and no DB stepping up to average or better than average opposite X and we will be in trouble. O-line incapable of either generating a consistent run game or protecting the QB and again, trouble. Here’s hoping for the best!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

It also doesn’t take much research to understand that billion dollar drug cartels will easily circumvent the building of a wall by tunneling under them or dare I say – a ladder, or using whatever methods possible to smuggle drugs in and a wall will do very little to stop that and only inhibit crossings from people will little resources
    __________________________________________________________

As Mike said, it’s a preventative measure, it creates an obstacle and gives border patrol a better chance of stopping the incoming.
    _________________________________________________________

Or that the opioid crisis in this country is a result of doctors and drug companies pushing those opioids on patients for profit, rather than any smuggling
    ____________________________________

that will be coming to an end if it already hasn’t due to the billion’zzzz dollar law suit against big pharma.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That kind of sounds like wishful thinking

But maybe that happens or maybe it doesn’t

Point is, drug addiction in America can trace its source to a lot of places other than the border

So if it’s comes from a lot of places, putting up a wall in one place isn’t going to stop it

  3. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It’s impossible to say from one side of the mouth that they are already building a wall (bc they are replacing the oven that was there already)
    _______________________________________________

They are building the wall, Banion put up a couple of miles of wall not too long ago that was privately funded.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Then what do you tax payer money for?

Something privately funded is none of my business – but that’s not what’s being asked by trump. He’s reapportioning funds that congress won’t approve

  4. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  5. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

how can you determine whether the costs are worth it in the face of such misrepresentations to begin with? You don’t know how much it will cost. You don’t know bc of the complete lack of honesty on the subject from the top
    ___________________________________________

even if it cost 25 billion…that’s a drop in the bucket compared to what the us brings in annually, like 5.8 trillion. it’s a deterrent, it will stop some drugs from entering, will let border agents patrol better to find these entry points by taking the work load off of them, scaling a 20 foot metal wall even if you have a ladder is no picnic!

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the deterrent will probably pay for that wall and more on a yearly basis.

when i was watching the republican convention, trump started with the wall and all the other republican candidates followed along saying it was a great idea.

not sure where they are or what their stance is now on it.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Where is the revenue coming from on these facts?

Building a wall to stop something is just spending $
We don’t generate tax revenue by spending it
And then you have to maintain, secure and man it – which is even more tax $

You can make an attenuated argument that if it works, it will save tax payers money, but that is offset by the costs, what you lose in the tax revenue generated from immigration (legal or not), and it whether it really works (which I am very skeptical about)

A wall does not pay for itself, it will unquestionably be a tax burden for decades in a time we really should be cutting spending rather than creating an new expenditure

Not to mention, I’m almost sure it will cost more much more costly than trump or any of his supporters are indicating. A project like this is unprecedented…in other words…really expensive…

I’m pretty sure we will be well on our way to bankruptcy if we go forward with this. It really doesn’t help then once the baby boomers really start retiring or dying we will be losing a lot of tax revenue

Bc he’s the president Steve and he has a greater responsibility.

This is such bullshit. The incompetence of every president in my lifetime has been tolerated, but the one president, that is actually doing something gets treated like an ogre. I’m done with the left resisting everything, so however he acts is ok with me. Just clean the FN swamp, keep the economy rolling, keeping fixing the trade deficits, keep working on imigration…

why is it ok for illegals to get govt handouts when American citizens, that have paid taxes for years, cant get? There’s 3 main issues with illegals, entitlements, safety, and keeping the left in power. If there were no illegals in the country and no dead people voting and other cheating tactics the left would never have a majority in Congress or win a presidency.

    • Sigh, I was hoping we could discuss football here.

Anyways, good article Mike, the only thing I question, isn’t You, it’s what’s up with Mcmillon, I hear the Canadian guy is getting firtpst team reps and Raekwon riding hthe oine
Of course it’s practice, and starters haven’t been named yet, but I’m beginning to think Flores might not be high on Mcmillon, if that’s the case, Mcmillon possibly could be one helluva surprise cut

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He just vetoed a law that would have prevented arms sales to Saudi Arabia, the biggest sponsor of terrorism in all of our lifetimes, bc of business interests

      Trump is the swamp

If it’s okay for a president to openly lie and mislead bc you think you are accomplishing things your prioritize, how can you know whether he is achieving those priorities and not just misleading you to believe they are being achieved? The Presidents honesty or lack of it should be important to everyone whether you agree with him or not.

If trump is facing overwhelming criticism that no one has ever faced before, it would take a heck of a lot of dead people and illegals to generate that criticism which probably would not be in English…lol…there might actually be quite a few living citizens that think he is shit….

It’s a little more realistic to believe that some people love him and some people hate him rather than everyone that criticizes him is dead, illegal, crazy or conspiring to stay in power…lol

  21. It’s not You Steve, You are fine, I was just hoping to talk about Dolphins, one can hope

Political talk sucks IMO, it just makes arguments and nobody changes their minds no matter what.

It seems pointless to Me, but of course You are free to discuss whatever, it’s not up to Me,

I just hope for football and Dolphins talk, and I know I will get some here eventually, lol

  24. I will say I agree with Steve,, government paid health care for illegals is bullshit,
We are in agreement, no argument from Me. I’m in total agreement and find it a bit shocking anyone would want that. I’m Very dissapointed in the ones that want that
It’s troublesome enough we are running trillion dollar deficits and thinking everything is fine.
Every single department is loaded with pork and waste, every single one, yet the deficits continue indefinitely, adding to the biggest debt in recorded history of any nation..
That was easy no arguing, good point buddy!
    Now back to football, lol

  27. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

David, the reason McMillan was pushed to 2nd team has more to do with his coverage skills than anything else. The Canadian is good in pass coverage. Flores is trying to put guys in positions that work to their strengths, which is why McCain is at safety and TJ and Jones are playing some LB.

We’ve mostly sucked at coverage by a safety lately, sure we have Minkah, but he’s been playing other positions.

I think Flores will know who to put where by the time the season starts.

  32. Now Rosen has earned a chance to start with the first team in practice ,

I slightly think that Equavon playing with the #1s is so they can learn what he can do. Playing him against 3rd stringers will show us nothing.

They have a ton of NFL tape on Raekwon. He had great stats vs the run but is not a natural gap pass rusher.

So we need that guy too, and some thought Jayrone Elliot would fill that role, but he played himself right off the team.

Playing Eq against the #1 OL will give the coaches some eyes on his foot work, instincts, and vision in traffic. We need to know if he is a keeper. We know Raekwon is. At least for now.

Eq might get himself cut as well. We need to know what we are shopping for and who will be good depth or stuational rotation guys for us. Eq’s hoping to stick and so far so good.

  35. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Different thing entirely with them “starting” Ballage. Drake has never been a bell cow and is not suited for the gritty work on the goal line and 3 yds and a cloud of dust rushes. You bring him in with fresh legs, and he can perform Miami miracles.

As many of you noted above, Ballage can replace Gore or Ajayi and give us the Big Back but with enogh speed to not get caught if he breaks free. And with Cox blocking, he might get free a lot.

So play Ballage now so he can learn what to do and save Drake’s body. We know Kenyan can score on any broken field play from anywhere on the field.

(Drake reminds me some of Reggie Bush, not the man or the history, but the skillset. Bush made the mistake of demanding to be bell cow, and it shortened his career and reduced his highlight reel.)

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Drake has to be put in the right position and then he’ll be great, no LBer can cover him,

as for Ballage he looks to be a powerful RB but from what i’ve seen (and that’s not much)
to me; he looks to run too upright to be a bell cow but i will wait to see if he can man that role. he may be great,

Gaskin looks to be the meal ticket, 5’10” 200+lbs short stumpy and tough. Ballage is 6’2″ 230, good size but a little too tall and runs upright to make him even taller, an easy target to hit.

And that if it is, that it doesn’t backfire.
It’s dangerous to sag back into the ropes and pretend to take a beating
so you can pop out with a KO punch.

Ali did it well, but look how he ended up mentally for taking all those hits.

      • i agree with the first part, but trump is no fighter, he was the spoiled rich kid that never got into a fight, and he sure avoided fighting in Vietnam with rich daddys help, the fortunate son

  41. Drake says contract is on his mind, and he is on a much improved diet now, says he has alot more energy now.

all signs point to the fact Drake is playing for a big contract this year, and will be doing everything he can to get one

i have always liked Drake, but im feeling this will be his best year so far because of his determination and hard work

  42. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yeah we have not had a real FB since Lousaka Polite, so how does one count them?
If we count a FB as a RB, then you are correct.
So we’d keep Drake and Ballage as our 1-2 committee and Cox as the FB.
That leaves Gaskin to be the 4th RB, as I said above.
I agree there is not room to have 4 RBs PLUS a FB.

So the wild card is Mark Walton. If they love him enough to bring him back after the suspension, (and i think they do) then Gaskin must go to the practice squad. But maybe he begins on the 53 if they think he can fill in as needed and goes down to triple A when Walton returns.

Maybe Farrow is a safer extra on the 53, then just gets waived when Walton returns, and Gaskin stays on PS the whole year.

I don’t think he ever gets poached.

We do ned a viable RB on the PS unless you think there are some street FAs out there you can snag when the injuries come. Pays to have someone who knows the playbook, but that’s less important for a RB, as long as they understand NFL blocking roles for RBs.

  44. Drake admitted to a poor diet previously, but improved it now.

an athlete in the NFL is expected to perform at an extremely high level. for a human body to do that, their diet and workout routine must be top notch

or otherwise poor diet, will NOT perform at his best

Cam Wake wrote the book on nutrition and workouts, hopefully the players adopt it as their own

Ben Shapiro says the left is so incensed by Trump, because he does what they do and they dont like what they see.

What people on the left don’t seem to get is when Trump lies, his supporters understand the point he’s trying to make, and they dont care if the facts aren’t all there.

So instead of commenting on the point of the message they attack the facts that aren’t totally accurate. Case in point is his remark about going back to your country and fix things there.

    • he hates minority women, only represents conservative white males.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Now you see what I’m talking about. Forget the point of the message, just go off on a tangent true or otherwise. He really could care less about someone’s color, it’s what they say or think.

      • I wish that were the case, I wished it was like that
But it’s obvious trump is a white supremacist and constantly attacks everyone that isn’t a conservative white male on a daily basis

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Haven’t read the Shapiro article, but I get what you mean.
      To an extent.

When Trump says things for effect,
such as the recent “clean up your own back yard” message
and some harsh things he said to European leaders about them contributing a more fair share to their own defense, for example,
I have no problem with tough talk and using the presidency as a “bully pulpit”
as they used to say a hundred years ago.

But Piggy has a good point that when Trump exaggerates numbers too far
or just blatantly makes stuff up to support his criticism, that’s dangerous to getting a solution to these problems, even if it’s a valid point, and also,
that is bad for Trump and us too in 3 ways.

      1) false facts confuse everyone and make it hard to fix things when it comes time to switch from campaign rhetoric to legislation
      2) blatant inaccuracies make Trump an easy target for his detractors, which blunts his attacks and makes them less effective even when they are valid,
      and
      3) some of his statements reveal a very big problem Trump has with what real people are experiencing, not how billionaires live. This throws Trump right into the Swamp he is trying to drain. And I do think the Fat Cats need to have their influenced lessened, becausse they will make laws that favor themselves to the detriment of the good of our nation.
But to a certain degree, Trump is also a Fat Cat.
He is part of the Swamp he is trying to drain.

So that is why i wish he would get his fact checkers to feed him the right data before he goes live with an attack. That way he can attack open borders, welfare cheats, deadbeats in Europe, duplicitous junk-dumpers in China, and other areas that need work without ruining his efforts by basing his philosophy on incorrect underlying contributory factors.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It would still just be apposed, apposed, appose.

Ben Shapiro has hinted on running in 2024, that would be my ultimate president, but the left would just attack him too, like they do when he speaks.

The game may have had a different outcome, had Atlanta been able to convert in short yardage.

My point is when you regularly convert on 3rd/4th and 1 or 2 it makes 1st and 10 more like first and 8 or 9. Conversely, it’s like 1st and 11 or 12. We’ve been playing the first and 12 game for far too long.

    MAGA Hats
The hats are produced by a California-based company called Cali-Fame. According to a 2015 Los Angeles Times interview with the company’s president, Brian Kennedy, about 80% of the company’s employees are Latino. When asked to comment for this video, a Trump campaign representative responded:

“As with so many manufacturers in America, Cali-Fame is enjoying the benefits of the Trump economy while also playing a unique and important role in the production of MAGA hats, the iconic symbol of President Trump’s historic campaign and pledge to Make America Great Again. The facility employs dozens of American citizens from diverse backgrounds, all dedicated and committed to their specialty craft producing a growing count of MAGA hats, totaling hundreds of thousands produced to date.”

The people who are making them are in many cases non US citizens, DACA kids, Central American aliens …

Also, the Obama admin with several other nations in 2015 unfroze about 35-65 billion in Iranian assets and another 20 billion in Iranian assets Iran owed to China for only God knows what as part of that piece of shit worthless nuclear deal.

Also, the Obama administration transferred $1.7 billion to Iran in 2016. That money was delivered in cash, some of it on a plane. But it was a payment related to a decades-long dispute and was indirectly linked to the nuclear deal.

In fact some of you on here are doing that even today, posting on a football blog from work. I am strictly forbidden from that and some of you say “can’t see vids at work” or other stuff like that. Same thing Hillary did except on scale.

OK Ok we aren’t the Sec of State, but if you are accustomed to operating at the level of the presidency your whole adult life, the awe in that I am sure is lessened. That’s just your job, and those servers were just as non sacred as the one for this blog is to us.

All through the middle 2000s, we began to see these disclaimers about email being not private, about the content of any posting being owned by the company, and about not posting family stuff or dirty jokes or snarky shit about co-workers on the company intranet and in social media. We all get it now, but it took a while for it to sink in.

But nearly everyone was guilty of that until the ripple effect of punishment or public embarrassment of those caught chilled most folks from doing it.

I’m pretty sure most of us on here would not be posting as we do if our identities were revealed and our posts were made public. And I bet I’m not the only one who would delete “my server” from back in AOL days or whatever, if I could find it to delete.

I would not want to be linked to some of the stuff we passed along back then that was funny, back then, between acquaintances but would be considered homophobic or sexist or otherwise non-PC nowadays, and some of the private affectionate stuff between my wife and me that we sent back and forth while we were both at work should never be shared with anyone.

I would not want Hillary to be president for the same reason that is my main criticism of Trump. They are both Fat Cats, so far removed from having to “shop at Publix” etc. that they just really don’t get it as far as what real people have to go through to feed their families, please a SOB boss, and save up for retirement.

The Iran deal wasn’t a payment of cash, it was a release of Iranian assets that were frozen by the US since the 70s. That wasn’t just a US Iran deal. It was a deal with the 5 nations of the U.N. security council and Iran

And in exchange Iran was required to decrease its uranium stockpile significantly which was an attempt to denuclearize Iran and inspections would have been in place to see that that happens

We pulled out of the deal in May 2018
Now a year later, since we pulled out, Iran has been confirmed to be stockpiling uranium after we pulled out

Hard to know whether during the deal Iran actually stopped uranium enrichment
But there is no question that after pulling out of the deal – Iran has gone back to the danger they were very openly – they recently seized a British tanker and of course shot down one of our drones

I would probably say pulling out of the Iran deal is the blunder, not entering it
But I get that people disagree with that

But Suggesting that Obama handed over cash to Muslim terrorist in Iran is just flat out wrong

Iran, while hostile, is a nation (an oppressive dangerous one) but they do fly a flag and are a member of a UN. A terrorist organization instead doesn’t usually have borders and relies on assistance of nations like Saudi Arabia.

That deal is a deal to stop a nation from stockpiling nuclear weapons. Could the $ be funneled terrorist groups – yes, but I would rather have that than a nuclear Iran

We might legitimately argue over who is more dangerous and whether deals like the Iran deal are really effective But it doesn’t change that Saudi Arabia still funds terrorism

The vetoed bills was passed by republicans and democrats and in fact there is even a chance that the veto is overridden by a subsequent vote – so its hardly a partisan position on this one, it something both republicans and democrats agreed was necessary. I don’t really want anyone selling arms to Saudi Arabia and generally I don’t want to sell arms anywhere in the Middle East – do you?

Rosen is very young and inexpierenced, and it showed the first two practices

Rosen will never have a first day of practice again, he will only improve from here, crushing Fitzpatricks hope to start
Fitzpatrick might be trying too hard because he knows he is in over his head, He is very intelligent
