Training camp notes – Dolphins lose a great historical team player – Nick Buoniconti

Today HOF Miami Dolphins LB Nick Buoniconti passed away. He was the leader of the “No Name Defense” that helped the Dolphins win two Super Bowls. He was a very charitable, impressive individual outside of sports. He will be sorely missed.

RIP Nick Buoniconti

So training camp is here and I’ve failed to feel any excitement other than the dact that it started. I don’t think it’s the team’s fault necessarily, i think it’s just the nature of practices, how short they are, and how much less physical they have to be to meet today’s safety standards. We also had one of our coaches fired this week, pretty odd at this juncture. You could look at this a few different ways. If you want the positive spin, it’s great that Flores recognized a deficiency early enough and immediately took action. Some guys may have waited around to see if there was any improvement which could easily have cost us some poor play early on. Also on a positive spin, putting the O-line in the hands of Dave DeGuglielmo is a good thing as he is a very experienced coach, coaching since 2004. If you want to look at the negative side, Flaherty wasn’t a great hire for the rookie Head Coach Flores. He was also previously the O-line coach in 2017 for the Dolphins and I needn’t remind you we were awful as per usghe at that time. In any case, let’s hope for the best in this regard.

I was hoping to see some player really show well, and so far it’s just been a whole lot of “eh”. We signed former Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns, who played briefly last year for the Cowboys. I really liked Hurns when he was tearing up the league along with Allen Robinson at Jacksonville. If we get something close to that Allen Hurns we did very well. I was unrealistically hoping for a strong start from QB Josh Rosen. I didn’t really expect it this early but was hoping for a surprise. Instead we found out he never had to identify the MLB in any stop in his football career. Seems so odd to me, I thought it was a given. This doesn’t make him any less a QB, but just something he will need to learn, and Josh Rosen has been a player who studies the game, so bet on him getting this down, as well as the offense too.

Anyone think maybe Charles Harris would be tearing things up? Another thing I hoped for, but it’s very early yet, and he’s going to have a chance to make some hay as the preseason games begin 8/8, just a week and a half away! One guy who the coaches seem to be very high on early on is LB Jerome Baker. He’s going to be an impact player, taking off from where he left last year. He can do it all, run, tackle, cover and rush the passer and he will be asked to do all of those things. An early revelation has Minkah playing mostly slot corner, but I would think by the time the season starts, he will be doing a lot more as he did last season. As long as he’s doing things he’s great at, let it happen.

Things I look for to change in the next couple of weeks. I want Gug’s to try and find that starting 5 as quickly as he can and get them playing together as much as possible. I think the earlier we do that the better chance we have of having a cohesive unit out there. I also want to see guys take step forward, especially the aforementioned Charles Harris and Josh Rosen. Whether Rosen begins the season as the starter is not crucial to me, but to know he’s good enough to do so if needed is. I would really like it if he makes leaps and bounds in understanding the offense and making better throws under duress. If he doesn’t accomplish this, we may not see him this year as a starter unless of course something happens to Fitz or he just plays awful, neither of which I want to see.Training camp runs until Aug 6th, and then our forst game action as I mentioned will be August 8th at home against Atlanta.

GO DOLPHINS!

I’d rather a RB give me 4 to 6 yards consistently on first down than 5 or 6 long runs per season

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I would too, but you have to put it in perspective. When Ajayi had his great year many of those long runs were game winners. We likely wouldn’t have been in the position to win without the 4 and 5 yards runs, but If say Ballage was getting the 4 and 5 yards routinely on first down, then Drake busts 5 or 6 late in games to put them away, that would be an ideal situation.

4 or 5 yards on first down routinely is/was Csonka. I’d surely rather have Csonka than Mercury Morris.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Real busy, but with Howard getting no help, one on one, we can double the other side, which takes away both outside WRs. That’s why Ty Law was indicted Thursday.

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

When you see the whole OL making mass pre-snap penalties, it often means they are freaked out by the DL, not knowing who is coming at them and from what angle, so they start trying to cheat the snap.
Frequent holding means they just grab anything and hang on so they won’t be the one giving up the dack again.

Either way, this is exactly what we want from our DL and Edge rushers, to create Havoc, Chaos, Doubt, Anxiety, happy feet. (See Rams failure to score a TD in a f’n Super Bowl)

I’m very happy with that scrimmage. The D looked real good, especially some guys we needed to step up. The O had its moments and finished on a high note with a “winning” drive and a TD.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Except the penalties, but let’s hope it had more to do with the D getting aggressive, than lack of focus on O.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

        good point
        but as you said,
the D is always ahead of the Offense in the summer, becuase they can just play fast, while the OL must read and react while trying to remember complicated play calls.

Kong – I used to love when they played “Fire on High” before an NFL game when they were describing the matchup. Remember that? That was a great instrumental
    ——————-
I don’t remember them using it like that, wish I did. Fire on High was the song that introduced me to the ELO catalog. I was a kid jockying a register at a gas station, and it would play on the radio every Saturday afternoon. I finally found out who it was when a customer told me, and I went on this whole ELO discovery journey, lol. Lynne is a very underrated composer.

Or do we just give up and not think and not try to figure out what to do?

Google can target ads to me that they think interest my demographic,
my age, my hobbies and interests, my buying and browsing habits.

Can’t the FBI or homeland Security do that to find people who exhibit tendencies toward violent hate? Can’t they then follow up on those people and track their gun ownership status, whether they have recently or frequently purchased, or bought large magazines, extra or special ammo, whatever the gun experts recognize as signs of impending misuse of deadly weapons?

Can’t they listen in on hate group blogs and other websites which inflame these idiots?
Match people being radicalized with gun ownership changes or profiles as mentioned above?

Then go interview people who check too many boxes and see where their head is at and maybe get an injunction to restrict their purchases, usage, or portability of weapons? Maybe put a chip on them or their guns so we know if they are engaging in suspicious activities?

Can’t we use our intellilgence to win against these people? or do they just kick our asses?

But we can’t come to solutions on basic living issues due to political deadlocks and bickering. • Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

Naples. The technology is there but that is a can of worms that goes against people’s rights as to how far the government can dig into all citizens privacy. It’s a fine line between targeted individuals on hate sites and an innocent person doing research on hate crimes and having their rights violated.

Naples — that is sound as sound advice. It’s the same kind of things we already do to try to track potential terrorists, both abroad and here. We could do the same for our citizens, but if we do you know there will be an outcry. Seems tracking gun sales would be a good place to go though, but then also seems we can’t even close the gun show loophole.

I thought our society learned from the Wild West that everybody packing six shooters strapped to their thighs is a recipe for daily street murders and whole towns taken over by outlaws.

It should be your parents beating it into to your head if you can’t figure it out!

Your tv and your teachers should not be responsible for raising you!

    We enjoy are freedoms!
But it comes with this as a side effect! And many more heinous things that people with no respect, or morals can do!

And therein lies the dilemma.. do you allow access of info for track and trace of ALL citizens for safety and give up privacy rights ? Or do you want rights of privacy despite this ?? There is no way to have both ..
