Training camp notes – Dolphins lose a great historical team player – Nick Buoniconti

Today HOF Miami Dolphins LB Nick Buoniconti passed away. He was the leader of the “No Name Defense” that helped the Dolphins win two Super Bowls. He was a very charitable, impressive individual outside of sports. He will be sorely missed.

RIP Nick Buoniconti

So training camp is here and I’ve failed to feel any excitement other than the dact that it started. I don’t think it’s the team’s fault necessarily, i think it’s just the nature of practices, how short they are, and how much less physical they have to be to meet today’s safety standards. We also had one of our coaches fired this week, pretty odd at this juncture. You could look at this a few different ways. If you want the positive spin, it’s great that Flores recognized a deficiency early enough and immediately took action. Some guys may have waited around to see if there was any improvement which could easily have cost us some poor play early on. Also on a positive spin, putting the O-line in the hands of Dave DeGuglielmo is a good thing as he is a very experienced coach, coaching since 2004. If you want to look at the negative side, Flaherty wasn’t a great hire for the rookie Head Coach Flores. He was also previously the O-line coach in 2017 for the Dolphins and I needn’t remind you we were awful as per usghe at that time. In any case, let’s hope for the best in this regard.

I was hoping to see some player really show well, and so far it’s just been a whole lot of “eh”. We signed former Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns, who played briefly last year for the Cowboys. I really liked Hurns when he was tearing up the league along with Allen Robinson at Jacksonville. If we get something close to that Allen Hurns we did very well. I was unrealistically hoping for a strong start from QB Josh Rosen. I didn’t really expect it this early but was hoping for a surprise. Instead we found out he never had to identify the MLB in any stop in his football career. Seems so odd to me, I thought it was a given. This doesn’t make him any less a QB, but just something he will need to learn, and Josh Rosen has been a player who studies the game, so bet on him getting this down, as well as the offense too.

Anyone think maybe Charles Harris would be tearing things up? Another thing I hoped for, but it’s very early yet, and he’s going to have a chance to make some hay as the preseason games begin 8/8, just a week and a half away! One guy who the coaches seem to be very high on early on is LB Jerome Baker. He’s going to be an impact player, taking off from where he left last year. He can do it all, run, tackle, cover and rush the passer and he will be asked to do all of those things. An early revelation has Minkah playing mostly slot corner, but I would think by the time the season starts, he will be doing a lot more as he did last season. As long as he’s doing things he’s great at, let it happen.

Things I look for to change in the next couple of weeks. I want Gug’s to try and find that starting 5 as quickly as he can and get them playing together as much as possible. I think the earlier we do that the better chance we have of having a cohesive unit out there. I also want to see guys take step forward, especially the aforementioned Charles Harris and Josh Rosen. Whether Rosen begins the season as the starter is not crucial to me, but to know he’s good enough to do so if needed is. I would really like it if he makes leaps and bounds in understanding the offense and making better throws under duress. If he doesn’t accomplish this, we may not see him this year as a starter unless of course something happens to Fitz or he just plays awful, neither of which I want to see.Training camp runs until Aug 6th, and then our forst game action as I mentioned will be August 8th at home against Atlanta.

GO DOLPHINS!

I thought somewhere it says that one man’s freedom ends where another man’s rights begin.

  2. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I just feel we are wussy to just give up and let psychos bully us while we cower and don’t try to find a solution.

Cancer kills only a few people every year. Most people don’t get it. But cigarette smoking is known to raise the odds of getting cancer, so we have laws that restrict its use so that those who wish to protect themselves from it can do so without having to get into a fistfight with someone who wants to smoke.

So we keep cigarette smoke out of places prone to fires like theatres, and we keep it away from those most susceptible to its damage such as hospitals, and we keep them away from those least likely to use good judgement about them such as school children.

This is done without depriving anyone of the right to smoke at home or to own personal smoking paraphernalia.

Why can’t we investigate guns the same way and restrict them from certain places, people, and situations most conducive to misuse that results in the slaughter of innocent people just out shopping, going to concerts, or worshiping God?

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Oh Boy !! As a chain smoking Canadian who really tries to be respectful of non smoking people there is so many ways I could go on this .. but I see and respect your feelings as to where you are Wanting to go with this .. 😳 especially with your personal reasons and situation..

Naples, allowing government to get into every fabric of our lives is a slippery slope. A very small minority of people effect the lives of the rest of us. Like I said before, I don’t have all the answers, but at least many of us care about it.

  4. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Video games and slasher films absolutely teach kids that violence is a viable means to solve problems and a heroic way to disagree with people who hold different political ideas or come from different racial stock.

That right there would be a good place to begin doing what you say about raising children better.

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I think a bigger effect of the video game violence is that it de sensitizes our feelings as to how Bad or acceptable this behaviour is.. prior to video games and 24-7 web access we used to be appalled when we heard of mass killings.. these days it is not even news worthy unless the #’s are astronomically HUGE enough to cause shock .. someone kills 2 people and gets shot down by police or kills himself is barely newsworthy anymore.. <<. That is sad …

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Are you afraid of slipping on a slope?
People scale cliffs, tracks on bull dozers traverse all terrain, boats float.

I’m not afraid of tackling the task of determining how to negotiate a slippery slope.
We have thousands of geniuses we can put to work on any task we want to work on.

We only can’t solve problems we never try to solve.

So we should give up out of fear we might go too far?
All of you can tell me right now how far is too far.
That’s no mystery. Just don’t go too far. Not really hard to manage that at all.

  6. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

How dare anyone on this board judge me and my response to this sickness. Fuck you.

People have died today in TX, USA. And, in the USA, it happens more than once a day. No where else on the planet in any other country does this hsppen.

I’m fucking proud to be part of nation that allows rampant access to military grade weapons meant for one purpose only, to kill people. It’s awesome!

At least I’m owning the results/consequences of that thinking AND I don’t even own a gun.

Embrace the slaughter. It’s our own doing.

Perhaps none of you know or understand the mythos of Krishna.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well that seems to be for me and I don’t think I attacked you in anyway to get that sort of response. Nowhere else on the planet does this happen? That would be inaccurate because many nations don’t allow that info. to be public. There is genocide going on in many other parts of the world. Sorry you feel that way.

  7. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    OK
I see I have frightened everyone.
    Sorry.
    Rest in Peace.

I just don’t believe in giving up and letting the bad people win.

  8. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Why is it the governments responsibility to curtail this?
they are to big and not involved to effectively run this to the ground.

Hell if you go on twitter right now there are thousands of nutcases going off about white sepremists, NRA, “president oompa loompa”, and every other thing that they can whine about.

But they all appear to have some kind of mental illness to me!!!

I at least hope that we all agree that shooting 20 people qualifies you as bat shit crazy????

I don’t have the answer! But what ever it is you can bet half the people in the US will hate it!!!!

  9. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Krishna: I’m sorry I am not familiar with the “mythos of Krishna” but I have met you and the missus , and I can say I am concerned with a couple of your statement s this week including above .. they may be meant in sarcasm, I cannot tell .. this is not a disparaging or asshole question.. are you okay ?? This just seems a bit off for what I assume of your character.. please take no offence, I ask out of concern

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wyo, so what you’re saying is it doesn’t take a village and I agree to a point. But a civil society does have an impact. We are a land of laws and yes we’re also a democratic society. The problem in the USA is many people don’t adhere to our laws and think they can change things on a whim. Other nations that have a long standing culture of similar people uphold standards. Our melting pot is losing that and extreme ideologists are pushing that movement for agendas I’m not sure what their end game is. Not sure why live and let live and don’t violate the rights of others is so complicated. But apparently it is.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Not speaking to the shootings, but the disrespect that is out there is appalling!

No one respects anything anymore! I know social media is a small slice (getting bigger) of the population, but it is trash when you go to one of the trending tags!

      Is that the future????

      It’s pretty scary!!!!!!!!!!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Agreed.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I totally agree with that Wyo. People using social media say or type things so far over the top of civil discourse that they enrage other people thousands of miles away.

Social media prompts people to be angry at people they have never met and will never meet, so they can’t get a beer and get over it; their anger seethes and the rage builds until they snap.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Wyo: I agree that respect as a whole has gone down the shitter .. once upon a time people could/would have discussions where you would actually listen to the other persons view and then they would listen to your response.. these days it’s all about yelling louder and not allowing the other persons view to be heard .. severely pisses me off .. if I am in a conversation and get cut off once, I will attempt a second time to voice my opinion.. if i am cut short on that attempt I will not waste my breath or opinion on someone who does not Want to hear it.. maybe that makes Me the Asshole, but I don’t see it that way …

  11. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Krishnna
I for one was not impressed by your sarcastic little rant!

It was not productive, and one of the reasons that this country can’t get out of it’s own way!

  12. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Manitobafinfan…your concern for my well being is respectfully accepted.

I have come to the realization that we there is a second amendment in this country that justifies (not Canada) access to and allows military grade weapons to be had by just about everyone in our country. It’s our constitutional right (not Canada).

And, with that realization is the acceptance of its consequences. Let the manifestation of this thinking unfold to its greatest moment.

And, not to poo, poo anyone here, but when the conversation turns to video games and smoking, I am certain that manifestation will be sooner rather than later.

And, then I’m the one being asked if I’m ok?

  13. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Not trying to impress anyone….just being real. If you want to put your head in in the sand so be it.

Sarcasm aside, the consequences of our gun policies are unique and real. But, let’s put ALL the blame on who pulls the trigger. All of it!

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Krishna, I don’t think I changed the subject. Murder is murder for whatever reason. You keep saying this is an exclusively USA issue as if every other country is having a picnic. Not true!

  15. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Stranger – The gun show loophole is overstated. Gun shows generally require vendors who sell guns to be FFL holders. If you are an FFL holder you must run a background on every buyer. What people confuse that with is parking lot sales between individuals.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I respectfully acknowledge your expertise and follow your explanation of the nuance, but Stanger has a valid point. He (we) are just not on the inside of the thing enough to be able to articulate it.

There IS a problem with gun shows. Many of the guns used in these atrocities are bought “legally.” Not everyone follows the law as tightly as you. They don’t in clothing sales either, but clothes don’t kill people.

Just the entire gun show phenomenon seems to romanticize gun possession as if it’s the coolest thing, as if to be a real man, you must own guns, and as if the private stockpiling of weapons is the American Dream.

At the same time, Gun Shows on tour as if they are rock concerts or the County Fair trivializes the responsibilities of gun ownership as if guns are woodworking tools. “Be careful you don’t get your hand caught in the saw.” But guns are far more dangerous than that because mistakes with guns hurt more than the clumsy owner.

The last time we had this discussion, I made sure you knew that i was never intent on impinging your gun ownership. You are a professional. I trust you with your guns. Nor would I ever subscribe to a policy that would take Wyo’s gun collection. He is a hobbyist and a collector, and I don’t mean that is a small or bad thing.

I own powerful sports cars far faster than anyone needs for transportation. People die because of idiots misusing cars. But I am a professional with fast cars and a hobbyist with my collection. So I do not think my “car obsession” is dangerous just as your and Wyo’s “gun obsession” is not dangerous. But I want the car idiots’ access to 150 MPH vehicles to be restricted from the public streets. That’s how I feel about guns.

Please forgive me if this is an example of passive aggressive. I am really trying to over come my tendency to do that. Where I was raised a long time ago, that was called being a Southern gentleman, meaning not getting all up in someone’s face during a disagreement.

  16. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The government is just a bunch of people. It is not faceless and nameless. We know who they are. They are us.
If we take the position that we all need to act independently, then we are weak, and government will crush us. We must use our government to do what we want it to do, then we will be able to get anything done we can dream of.

We have built up the greatest nation on earth by having a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. We decided against monarchy and have rejected dictatorshhip. They abuse the citizens for the benefit of the privileged few.

We can’t drop out of government. We must keep government being of people, of us, so we can keep it under control.

Term limits, balance of power, checks and balances, separation of church and state, a free and impartial news media, no one above the law, and maintaining the right to the pursuit of happiness are ways to keep government in check.

But we must participate in it to make sure it is just us. Once the government becomes different from us, it becomes a dangerous enemy that we must destroy.

So we are smart. We can figure stuff out. We can make goverment behave. We have to.
We can invent stuff and we can solve problems, as long as we don’t give up.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree that government is made up of us (people – citizens with families too). But something happens to those positive candidates once they get elected to Washington? What is the last great thing government has done for the people who elect them to do so?

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

won WW2, invented the internet, built the interstate highways, put a man on the moon, saved the eagles, rebuilt NOLA after Katrina, educated my children, eradicated smallpox, etc.

  17. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

From Columbine to today and for the foreseeable future NOTHING has changed.

I think sarcasm is the least of the problem in this “debate.” Seriously???

I would be more than happy to debate this a 1000 more times, but I’ve accepted it and now it’s just time to sick back, watch, and embrace something for which I have no control or voice.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why are teenagers and young people shooting up their own classmates and family members, never mind the crazy political radicals. The young crazed kid who shot up the black church in Charleston SC a few years ago used a hand gun. So what’s the solution with that one?

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

that scum used a 45 caliber Glock. That is not a hunting gun. That has only one use and that is to kill innocent people.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Access to military grade weapons in every classroom across the nation is the solution, barbed wire schools, barred windows, and locked doors.

And, don’t go to Vegas or Garlic festivals.

I know you are a smart man.

Who knows why, but I do know it wasn’t hard for him to get a gun nor was he tested nor did he have to prove proficiency or demonstrate competence with a deadly weapon.

One offs and what ifs are poor excuses for 20 years + of doing NOTHING.

Acceptance of the status quo and I’m wrong. Bitching about the existing policies and I’m wrong. LOL at the hypocrisy.

Ask Jahndoh if he or his daughter feel safe in school anymore.

I’ll ask my partner who goes to El Paso once or twice a month if he’s going to bring his AR from now on so he can be ready?

  18. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I personally do not see any reason that a regular citizen of ANY Country should have access to more powerful/deadly weapons than the police/ Armed Forces that are charged with protecting that country , are allowed access to.. again I live in a different country and your Right to Bear Arms I understand IS a basis of the foundation of the formation of your country, but it is 250ish years old.. is it unreasonable to revisit this based on current events ?? And finally Yes I get it Guns can’t kill people without people but take away some access and it MAY make a difference..

  19. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Tim Knight, respectfully, you are wrong….please do not compare apples and oranges. Dictators murdering their own people has no place in this issue.

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

wow that was very generous and insightful to name Zach Thomas in answer to that question.
My opinion of Mawae just went way up.

  22. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

WYO: again not trying to be an ass or disrespect anyone ‘s rights.. but why would John Q Public NEED a semi automatic weapon ? We hunt up here, not myself ( shocker right 😱) but as far as I know rifles and shotguns are about all allowed, I could be wrong .., as far as personal protection goes , I would think a semi automatic would be , pardon the pun , overkill..

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Actually most shotguns are Semi-auto now a days
and the make many semi-auto rifles that are set up for hunting.

      I don’t own any. But that’s because I’m a cheap bastard!

  23. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

You take away one way of mass killing and they will always find another way of killing people. Address the problem not the weapon. Everyone jumps on the ban weapons ideology when some fuck nut shoots innocent people but nobody addresses the mental problems of the killers.

  24. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

100% agree that banning weapons will not eliminate the issue.. Fucktards will be Fucktards .. and yes again, they would likely find another way .. helping to fix their issues is a whole other can of worms.. IE : how do you know they have a problem BEFORE they snap and go postal

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wow! Yeah I’m being crazy aren’t I? Throwing out ideas and being called out for what exactly? That I don’t like what’s happening either?

  26. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Well the only shiny little diamond in the bottom of the septic tank is he did it in Texas!

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Naples, some handguns are for defense against monsters who roam amongst us. I’m not a gun guy, I have fired them but it’s not my thing. It’s not about the weapon. Planes and bombs do more damage than guns.

  28. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  29. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

IDEAS….that’s an idea! And, since the sarcasm is going over everyone’s head, I will say this another way.

I challenge every gun loving owner/enthusiast/collector/hunter to do something about wacko white guys using military assault weapons to kill innocent people.

Write/vote/provide IDEAS to your rep to fix this NOW. It is unique to this country on this planet. Doing nothing and accepting the status quo means you’re ok with and accept the consequences of these policies. After all, it keeps being defended. I cannot reconcile in my mind how it could be any other way.

Therefore, in my mind, if I accept the nation’s current gun policies, I must ACCEPT the carnage these policies have allowed.

Embrace it and be joyful in the manifestation. True Agape!

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

And, if your rep doesn’t listen to your voice/request, vote them out and find someone who will. I’m appalled how long this has gone on and not ONE thing has been done to stop it. Not one.

Acceptance is the only true path.

  30. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

I’m a legal gun owner and a collector so because some fucktard shoots innocent people I should hand over my legally owned fire arms ? Guess who will have access to weapons after that. The same dickholes that commits these crimes.

  31. The 21 year old white male domestic terrorist from the Dallas area is the , El Paso shooter.
He put out a manifesto before the shooting, ranting about immigrant hate, looked like a trump rally speech, but he was obviously a magaidiot inspired by someone who is always spouting immigrant hate all the time, not sure why the Ohio shooting last night was inspired by
2 mass shootings in 24 hours, what is being done to stop it, nothing?
This has to stop, promoting and encouraging domestic terrorism by enflaming the right wing nuts with daily hate makes the president partially responsible too

Hate, has consequences, 3 mass shootings in one week, and after the El Paso shooting trump was tweeting about a UFC fight his son’s were going to

I will never absolve the shooters for the blame, nor the NRA, nor the president, it’s a deadly combination

32 mass shootings this year, and we are doing nothing but encouraging hate and ignoring gun control
We now live in a banana republic led by an authoritarian strongman

Trump should be impeached immediately , the blood of Americans is on his hands, and more Americans will die because of more trump supporters encouraged by Trumps hate and division.

Nothing was done to stop the shootings except tweet about UFC fights? Omg, how can anyone ever support trump and his divisive hate , that inspires retarded trump supportwrs to murder Americans?
The blind support of trump also closes innocents eyes. Enough of this shit, we need gun control and a uniting president to inspire us, not devour us
We arrest a shooter, but don’t do anything for the guy that inspired him.
I’m sure someone won’t like what I have to say, but I say it for the victims , who are not here anymore to say it

Garlic festival in California, el Paso hate crime by white male domestic terrorist, and the Ohio shootings, a week of blood and murder on American streets. And the twitter idiot is talking aboutnUFC fights and bitching at minority reporters, hopefully not inspiring the next shootings?

Daily hate and fearmonfering inspires hate, violence, murder, and domestic terrorism

I will get accused of politicisizing, but the politicizing was done by Trump in the El Paso hate crime
Now it’s time to say enough
And remove the ringleader of hate and death to Americans

White domestic terrorists kill far more in the US than Mexicans or muslims, we have to stop inspiring them even if we have to remove the banana republic strong man by impeachment

Trump has made the country divisive and dangerous, our families are NOT safe, and there is a UFC fight going on somewhere for the distraction?

  32. trump lives in a protective bubble of secret service agents, he can say whatever he wants, and domestic terrorists cannot really threaten him

but us? we have no secret service protection, and our children could be murdered in school , our friends murdered at walmart or food festivals, or just about anywhere in the US over the last year of 32 mass shootings and murders.

we have to depend on the dude who is in no danger,
to understand what we are going through, and enact policies to make it better, SMH
he doesnt understand or represent anyone but himself and his cronies

and just like vietnam he is ducking this war too

  33. Krishna is correct, We the people are part of government also, We need to contact our state representatives and let them know how we feel.on the 32 mass shootings and murders in the last 7 months.

we need an adult at the white house who can stop it and make America safe again

there can be no MAGA , without MASA first!

  34. trumptards need to turn their brains on the next time they vote, votes can have deadly consequences, and unfortunately all or us reap what the trumptards sow

i warned everyone 4 years ago this would happen, all i got was o not it wont,

i WISH i was wrong, but the American hating dictator got in anyhow
all the trump voters are part of the problem
next time vote for someone that wants to HELP this country, not encourage the domestic terrorists!

  35. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Krishna makes a lot of good points.

what need for anyone to have an assault rifle is there? would you go hunting with one? would you use it for home defense? i would think a hand gun would be better for that as it’s not bulky like a rifle.

they are good for only one thing… mass shootings.

  36. TryPod's avatar TryPod says:

I see Dayton has now had a mass shooting. What do you think the odds are that it was someone on the extreme right? Why does it always seem to be someone on the extreme right? Ah, well.. Thoughts and prayers.

I knew you would be the first retard to blame Trump like he was the one who wrote the 2nd Amendment.

It’s far left fucks like you who spew so much hate causing more division and panic in the public which pushes nut jobs like this to snap.

Toba said this as part of a comment last night “.. these days it’s all about yelling louder and not allowing the other persons view to be heard .. “. First thing I thought of was you. You are just as crazy as that fucktard shooter. People like you are part of the problem. Dipshit!!!

I was going to say this will go in one ear and out the other with you but your skull is to fucking think for it to even get in. Crawl under your rock and get ready for another 4 years dipshit!

    • my anger isnt against You, its against the terrorirists that are murdering innocents, and the president that inspires them with weaponized hate and racism mixed with lies against women, minorities, press, political opponents.
i understand everyone should be angry about the mass shootings.

the mourning in my soul is for all Americans, including You, that we are all living in a country with daily mass shootings, and our children are not safe.
someone needs to stop the senseless murders now, tweeting about ufc fights isnt the answer IMO

how can WE stop the mass shootings?

I have absolutely no worries about him grabbing one of his guns and going out to kill people!

So the rest of you Mother Fuckers could just do the same, I reckon we wouldn’t be in this situation!

Rant about Guns all you want but it’s exactly your fucking attitude why we can’t do a FUCKING thing about anything in this country!!!!!!!!!!

Go ahead and flush the fucking toilet!

I don’t need anyone to survive! Can you say the same??????

Would he pat the old boys on the back for every Mexican, Brownie, or Muslim that was caught, before they did something wrong.

Yes, I am angry. This president is playing the People with Social Media literally in his back pocket. This is not really about guns, thats the decoy. It is about a society that is under ATTACK by the Mega-Wealthy with control over military weapons grade software that is running rampant on social software platforms. If someone is in your head telling you all day, that you are poor white trash. That the Brown people are here and living YOUR american dream. That they are sucking up all YOUR hard earned tax dollars, and that THEY hate america. What would any dumbass white boy do… But those tables can be just as easily turned.

Imagine a hostile country, taking this approach… or military complex… or a bunch of rich folks wanting to keep the rebels busy killing each other, while they rake in the money for themselves. It is happening right now under our noses.

I too am done saying God Bless those poor souls that died. Our prayers fall on deaf ears. It is time for a revolution in this country. I do not own a gun, I support freedom, I participate in local politics, I organize and I vote.

Naples – I don’t take anything you said amiss. Gun shows are not the firearms markets that most people imagine them to be. I have only gone to a gun show once to see what it was about. What guns were there were mostly more collector type (WWI/WWII era long guns) than anything else. Really was like a big flea market of accessories with very few guns. I just think that when people focus on stuff like gun shows it is a distraction from looking for causes and solutions that are achievable.

We can’t talk about it much at all if the tone is set by Krishna’s histrionics or David’s ignorance and conflation with politics. While contacting your reps is a start, you should do it when you have realistic ideas that you can offer them. Banning and confiscating isn’t going to happen, so why clamor for it? Universal background checks? Sure, but don’t expect those to stop mentally ill people from committing mass murder. Requiring training and licensing? Maybe. We could go the Israeli, Swiss or Finnish way – require everyone to serve and train, then maintain their weapons at home as a civil defense force. Or maybe we say only those who have served honorably in the military or law enforcement are allowed to own them.

ORob/Manitoba – The “I don’t see why anyone needs etc.” argument is a non-starter. You can’t impose your experiences or paradigms on the problem or on others. I don’t know why ORob needs more than one set of golf clubs or why Manitoba needs to smoke and drink Canadian beer. But that doesn’t mean they should not be able to. I hunt with an AR-15 and it is also my first choice for home defense. I only carry a pistol because that’s what is practical to conceal. The only two things worse to bring to a gunfight than a pistol are a knife and nothing.

There have not been 30+ mass murders in the last 7 months. I don’t know where David gets his data from. Maybe he imagines it. There have been 6 in the last year. Here is a tracker:
    https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2019-08-03/la-na-us-mass-shootings-timeline

The terms assault weapon and military grade weapons are misnomers, but we all know what kind of weapon they are used for these days. The problem is that they are not the most commonly used in mass shootings. They are simply the ones that get the most press. Just like primitive man attributed lightning to gods and demons, people who are uneducated in guns attribute super powers to this type of gun. They are not even the most effective or terrifying way to kill people. Biggest mass murder in the US outside of 9/11 and Oklahoma City is still the 1990 Happy Land fire. Where there is a will there is a way.

Krishna asked where else this kind of violence happens. Mexico, Central America, South America – all places with strict gun laws. There is only one gun store in all of Mexico. 33 people burned to death in Japan within the last month. At least three killed in Canada by thrill-killers who have not been caught yet. Canada has had three other mass murders this year. The US doesn’t even rank in the top ten for gun deaths by capital (https://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/sorry-despite-gun-control-advocates-claims-u-s-isnt-the-worst-country-for-mass-shootings/).

Happy to discuss solutions and cordially disagree in the course of those discussions. But only if they are rational and factual.

I can’t understand why we can’t just use our intelligence and our American values to do some things to improve the situation.

To me, it is like climate change. I frankly don’t care why it’s happening. It’s happening. Are we just going to sit idly by and let New York and Miami go underwater and our corn fields burn up and other dire consequences occur?

No. Let’s pump some of that excess water up onto the Sahara. Let’s plant more trees and curb the use of air pollutants and whatever else our brilliant minds can think up. To just throw up our hands and say nothing bad is happening to our environment is wimpy and dangerous.

Same with guns. No blame to the good people who own guns. But let’s think about what to do with the nutcases.

I do believe fomenting racism and an “us vs. them” mentality is a big part of the gun problem.
I saw mass shootings begin to occur more frequently during the Obama admin,
so it did not start with Trump.

I actually think our rigidly binary politics is part of the gun problem. “You’re either for us or against us” is a dangerous motto. This leaves no middle ground for moderate positions and pushes idiots toward violence against the other side.

We are all Americans, and we should respect eveyone’s ideas on how to proceed in the best interests of our country.

I would start by eliminating the branding of states red and blue, which begs the question of the contribution of the Electoral College system in raising the chances of Civil War.

I favor laws against the 2 parties strangling elections. It’s obvious to me that that is a tool they use to maintain power in the hands of the elite, which is one step closer to Big Brother. The two parties are in collusion to prevent meaningful elections.

    • ok, Do you favor elections by Americans? or is foreign influence ok?
putin told AMericans about 6 years ago that voters dont decide elections, vote counters do

but domestic terrorists are, and in their manifesto we can see WHO influenced the el paso murders

    _______________________________________________

I respect your opinion but i don’t agree with it, here’s why,

while i have multiple golf clubs they do not endanger a mass of people, and while you may hunt with an AR, you don’t really need to do that. and while you may use an AR for home defense a glock would serve that purpose. the only reason you would need an AR is if a large group of people were attacking your home and I’m not sure what the chances of that happening but i would assume it’s far fetched.

with that said you may need that AR for legitimate reasons however you have to weigh the options,

having an AR to hunt, to enjoy shooting at targets or to defend your home against 20 intruders which may be unlikely,

VS having mass shootings at the rate we are having them. 30 people dead in less than 24 hours.

I think it’s obvious that assault rifles should be highly regulated if not banned.

with a regular gun an individual can still go on a crazed assault however you limit the death toll as with an assault rifle there’s practically no escape.

  65. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Anti-gun people forget one major point. We can’t even slow down illegal drugs but you want to restrict an American right? In 2017, over 70,000 died from drug overdoses. Over 30,000 died in car accidents. Over 44,000 committed suicide. 2017 had around 19,000 total murders with over 50% being black people murdering each other in gun free cities. . Are we fixing those problems? Did they suddenly become problems? How are these gun free cities fixing this?

It took the police about two hours to bring this dude in. He would have still gotten a gun if he wanted too as seen in Mexico, our gun free cities, etc He would have still murdered a ton of people but maybe someone with a gun could have stopped him. The police NEVER will be able to stop these instances. Having the media plaster fame all over for mentally ill losers to feel famous and important will continue this madness. Allowing the mentally ill to roam where they want will continue this madness. Taking people’s guns…will increase the madness.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    • semi automatic and automatic weapons that can murder innocent Americans are not our right.

do we have rights to stinger missiles, grenade launchers, and gatling guns on our cars?

can we speed through school zones and scare the children with M50 caliber machine guns firing at birds in the air?

all of these things are outrageous, and non permissable in our society.
the second amendment doesnt justify civilians using military equipment or nuclear weapons and nuclear subs

a hunting rife or other suitable home security is entirely possible without weapons of mass destruction in every neighborhood, there has to be reasonable limits, and sensible legislation to protect all of us from crazy people getting ar 15s or other military hardware to murder innocents in great numbers

  67. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Let’s pout this narrative from this scumbag murderer to rest. He was a loser and wasn’t getting anywhere in life. He read about the other mass shooters the media loves to promote every week. He was never going to be famous any other way. He probably felt he wasn’t getting anywhere. So, he loads a gun, heads AWAY from home, and murderers RANDOM people…and gets his wish. He’s FAMOUS now.

Did this guy look for places where it was guaranteed he’d mainly kill Latinos? No, just random victims. Would someone who hated Mexicans so much, just randomly kill in a Walmart? No. He didn’t give a damn who he killed. White, black, Latino, Asian, it didn’t matter. Getting famous mattered. Like the guy in Australia. Like the guy last week. Like the guy in Nevada. Like Columbine. I’m just glad Texas has executions. This guy will rightfully fry. He deserves less mercy tbh.

    • how many miles is it from dallas to el paso? random victims near the border at a great distance from his house? and he hated immigrants?

it was classified as a hate crime, not a random incidence

The suspect left the Dollar Store and approached the Publix entrance and was stopped by the police. Supposedly he refused to drop his gun so the police opened fire.

It sounded like automatic gunfire because so many police open fire at once. My first thought was somebody through a long pack of firecrackers in the front door. Then people started screaming and running. In my head I imagined somebody entering the front door and started shooting up the place. So I calmly ( I wasn’t really calm, but I walked not ran) left my car where it was and proceeded to the back emergency exit. You see videos of them spewing ignorant stuff all over the country. Then when one who gets to the boiling point and wants to send some kind of message and they snap, we get these acts of violence and carnage. I’m not sure what we can do to stop it.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

There’s a lot we can do to stop it Tim

        Culturally – We cannot empower
We can speak against it instead of pretending it wasn’t said when we hear it
We can’t allow them to feel comfortable
We can point out the moral deprivity of defending it

On a policing scale, we can define white nationalism as a terrorist group (currently the fbi only looks at intentional organizations)
The 1st amendment generally allows people to organize
But terrorist groups Have pretty limited rights (bc of the danger they pose)
There’s an older sup cat case that permitted the KKK to march (or stopped a City from revoking their license) that was based on the 1st amendment
But I think it’s time to change that
You wouldn’t accept isis marching in n your town- we shouldn’t permit KKK either

Currently (and for decades) these hate groups get protections they probably shouldn’t get based on the threat they pose

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I agree. It’s a massive problem with no easy solution no matter how much we hear there are. It’s also just one we need to work on. Some people might not like hearing this but over 10,000 black people were murdered in 2017 (mainly by other black people) and I don’t see anyone with a real solution today for that problem. We have Dems across the country reducing laws and I don;t see how that fixes anything. The law is our first defense against chaos.

    • there is another mass shooting today, this one in chicago,
mass shootings are out of control and the president does nothing to stop it

  91. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

New Age – Unfortunately, the current background check system relies on states and local municipalities to voluntarily input records. In many cases they don’t and there is almost no medical/mental history information included because of HIPAA and the sensitivity surrounding mental illness. So maybe shoring up those weaknesses would be a first step.

Stanger – You want to start a revolution? Try forcing Americans to sell you back their legal guns. Not happening. Nor should it. We’re not talking about a small number of people. The people clamoring for bans and seizures are a minority. And for those who say we cannot stand up to the military or police if the government goes rogue, try these numbers (WIKIPEDIA):

“Americans made up 4 percent of the world’s population but owned about 46 percent of the entire global stock of 857 million civilian firearms.”[5] U.S civilians own 393 million guns. That is 3 times as many guns as the armed forces of the Russian Federation (30.3 million), China (27.5 million), North Korea (8.4 million), Ukraine (6.6 million), United States (4.5 million), India (3.9 million), Vietnam (3.8 million), Iran (3.3 million), South Korea (2.7 million), Pakistan (2.3 million), and all the other countries (39.7 million) combined.[6] American civilians own more guns “than those held by civilians in the other top 25 countries combined.”[7]

“American civilians own nearly 100 times as many firearms as the U.S. military and nearly 400 times as many as law enforcement.”[8] Americans bought more than 2 million guns in May 2018, alone.[8] That is more than twice as many guns, as possessed by every law enforcement agency in the United States put together.[8] In April and May 2018, U.S. civilians bought 4.7 million guns, which is more than all the firearms stockpiled by the United States military.[8] In 2017, Americans bought 25.2 million guns, which is 2.5 million more guns than possessed by every law enforcement agency in the world put together.[8] Between 2012 and 2017, U.S. civilians bought 135 million guns, 2 million more guns than the combined stockpile of all the world’s armed forces.”

If that’s not enough, consider who the military is. We are/were sworn to protect and uphold the Constitution, not any politician or authority figure. If it came down to a fight over rights, most of the military is going over to the citizens side.

Wasn’t a revolution under the Obama weapons laws though. Maybe I just have faith that people would follow the rule of law. Mentioned sawed off shotguns before. Same goes for full auto. Am sue a bunch of folks grumbled about them not being legal.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Phelon, I’ve been in these discussions over a decade and no one is even pushing for better background checks. That’s why I find this argument tiresome and dishonest in the extreme. We have to start somewhere and one side wants to start with zero guns. It’s never going to happen, it’s a dishonest proposal(they know it won’t happen), and is just a way to push a narrative. When someone starts pushing better background checks, then I may listen to them…but they won’t.

I’m not sure you were around when the ACLU made it almost impossible to institutionalize people. That’s where the problem started. Let the mentally ill out to roam! No problem there!

My biggest problem today is the entire leftist narrative. For example, they have been pushing transsexual as normal instead of mental illness. There are at most 1% of the pop who has this diagnosis but they are dictating words we can say, bathrooms they can use, and what science is allowed to publish. Just ask Trump how easily the media can ruin you in today’s environment. Obama was already locking up journalists and brown babies while the media fawned over him. Now imagine what leftists would promote if they knew people that disagreed with them couldn’t defend themselves. Just look at Antifa for that answer. We’d be in a 1984 totalitarian regime within a generation. Just like Venezuela. One generation.

      Well
Number one you can always amend HIPPA to crate an exception

Secondly if owning a gun requires a license, then it probably won’t run afoul of hippa. But licensing is a little inconstant with the 2nd amendment

I’m pretty sure legally mental health checks can be conducted for limited purposes

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I was just talking about at work. Law is already there that judicial psychiatric commitments are a reason to deny gun ownership, even if there is an appeal process after. 96. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    New age

I don’t like hearing that (about black murders by black people ) bc it’s a false equivalency

Do you think those murders are based on the victims race? Obviously they aren’t

Don’t belittle hate crimes by making false equivalencies with something that has nothing to do with discrimination

I don’t dislike hearing it bc it’s offensive
I dislike hearing it bc it’s a red hearing

There’s a serious problem with hate groups inspiring people to act out violently based on race

There would be less violence if that was addressed without people taking their eye of the ball period.

Violence will always occur. Inner city violence didn’t start yesterday or last year, it’s beem around for ever and will likely always exist

But when it comes to violence by white nationalist against groups of people we can probably take steps to stop that

Once we start talking it seriously instead of immediately going into whataboutism

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We allow gang violence to exist and innocent citizens get caught in the crossfire everyday. But we’ve also allowed organize crime to exist for over a hundred years and people in power negotiate with them in backrooms. It’s kind of hard to stop violence when we’re not really trying to stop it.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Not whataboutism at all. You’re focused on smaller issues and ignoring the giant one. People kill people they know, so it isn’t like white people don;t kill whites or any other group kills people in their neighborhood. You just don;t like the subject, Liberals have no answers at all, so you change the subject REAL FAST. What about those white nationalists!!!!! Utter crap. You’re better than that. This is the early days where we have no real idea what is going on but White Nationalists! Whataboutism indeed.

Piggy, I agree about what you said about the KKK and other groups like that. But like I’ve said before, I never come across these fucktards nor do I know any of them so I don’t feel personally that it’s this mass problem all around us. I know they exist, but what is their percentage? Most hate groups of whatever kind are fringe. As disgusting as I find them all, I think we try to make them out to be more than they are and maybe we should stop that as a society.

Let law enforcement keep an eye on them like they already do, and the majority of citizens don’t give them the time of day. But the media likes to play them up as if they’re everywhere and we can’t avoid them. Most of the time you find them at rallies and protests. Don’t go to the them and lend them your ear. They get off on listeners whether you agree or not. The majority doesn’t agree with them so don’t engage them. Without an audience they fall on deaf ears and basically only talk to themselves.
