Training camp notes – Dolphins lose a great historical team player – Nick Buoniconti

Today HOF Miami Dolphins LB Nick Buoniconti passed away. He was the leader of the “No Name Defense” that helped the Dolphins win two Super Bowls. He was a very charitable, impressive individual outside of sports. He will be sorely missed.

RIP Nick Buoniconti

So training camp is here and I’ve failed to feel any excitement other than the dact that it started. I don’t think it’s the team’s fault necessarily, i think it’s just the nature of practices, how short they are, and how much less physical they have to be to meet today’s safety standards. We also had one of our coaches fired this week, pretty odd at this juncture. You could look at this a few different ways. If you want the positive spin, it’s great that Flores recognized a deficiency early enough and immediately took action. Some guys may have waited around to see if there was any improvement which could easily have cost us some poor play early on. Also on a positive spin, putting the O-line in the hands of Dave DeGuglielmo is a good thing as he is a very experienced coach, coaching since 2004. If you want to look at the negative side, Flaherty wasn’t a great hire for the rookie Head Coach Flores. He was also previously the O-line coach in 2017 for the Dolphins and I needn’t remind you we were awful as per usghe at that time. In any case, let’s hope for the best in this regard.

I was hoping to see some player really show well, and so far it’s just been a whole lot of “eh”. We signed former Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns, who played briefly last year for the Cowboys. I really liked Hurns when he was tearing up the league along with Allen Robinson at Jacksonville. If we get something close to that Allen Hurns we did very well. I was unrealistically hoping for a strong start from QB Josh Rosen. I didn’t really expect it this early but was hoping for a surprise. Instead we found out he never had to identify the MLB in any stop in his football career. Seems so odd to me, I thought it was a given. This doesn’t make him any less a QB, but just something he will need to learn, and Josh Rosen has been a player who studies the game, so bet on him getting this down, as well as the offense too.

Anyone think maybe Charles Harris would be tearing things up? Another thing I hoped for, but it’s very early yet, and he’s going to have a chance to make some hay as the preseason games begin 8/8, just a week and a half away! One guy who the coaches seem to be very high on early on is LB Jerome Baker. He’s going to be an impact player, taking off from where he left last year. He can do it all, run, tackle, cover and rush the passer and he will be asked to do all of those things. An early revelation has Minkah playing mostly slot corner, but I would think by the time the season starts, he will be doing a lot more as he did last season. As long as he’s doing things he’s great at, let it happen.

Things I look for to change in the next couple of weeks. I want Gug’s to try and find that starting 5 as quickly as he can and get them playing together as much as possible. I think the earlier we do that the better chance we have of having a cohesive unit out there. I also want to see guys take step forward, especially the aforementioned Charles Harris and Josh Rosen. Whether Rosen begins the season as the starter is not crucial to me, but to know he’s good enough to do so if needed is. I would really like it if he makes leaps and bounds in understanding the offense and making better throws under duress. If he doesn’t accomplish this, we may not see him this year as a starter unless of course something happens to Fitz or he just plays awful, neither of which I want to see.Training camp runs until Aug 6th, and then our forst game action as I mentioned will be August 8th at home against Atlanta.

GO DOLPHINS!

using volume of murders during a presidency that spanned 8 years vs one that has spanned 3 years doesn’t really carry much weight.

There is no question that white supremacy is on the rise. (Actually not just in the Us but abroad as well) The Washington examiner (a right leaning paper) wrote a story about the increase this fall

    https://www.google.com/amp/amp.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/may/23/white-supremacist-domestic-terrorism-rising-fbi-sa/

No question that white supremacy being on the rise predates Trump and when it happens internationally, you know it goes beyond US politics. And there is certainly no question that mass shootings predate Trump and sometimes have nothing to do with racism

But when a politician weaponizes racism for political gain, it’s going to inspire people to act out – it always has.

I keep saying it – stop both siding it

This is a serious problem that needs serious attention
It’s not just as it always was
It’s escalating according to the FBI

There’s a lot of factors, like the Internet making it easier to reach out to disturbed people who weren’t reachable. But rhetoric associating groups of people with crime like rape and drug dealing – that’s just playing to that audience. And that is what trump has done.

I’m a little more nuanced than blaming trump for mass shootings – since I agree they’ve been going on for a while. But do I think trumps rhetoric inspires people to act out in a discriminatory manner. I don’t think there’s a reasonable argument it doesn’t.

Double the number, half the time means that its on par with one another. You didn’t read the line i guess where i said this isn’t about Obama vs Trump its pointing out that the presidency has nothing to do with it. I’m using peoples assertions against their own argument. You cant say that this president inspires this kind of action and not say Obama didnt as well. I personally dont believe either of them inspire crazy, i think people are crazy. I think we have an out of control mental health issue and that also explains the fact that despite more restrictions on guns we are having more deaths than we did when there were less restrictions. This is a much more complex issue than, bad president, this is a much more complex issue than take away guns, this is an issue with a fuck ton of people who care so little for their own life and the lives of others that they feel justified in making a decision to kill. All the rest of this shit is the rhetoric, all the rest of these arguments are the distraction to the solution.

I dont have a guy, im not a political puppet. Also Trump isnt the first or the last to use race to garner support, the democrats have a long standing hate rish white people rhetoric going and yes it causes societal issues. They use the divide and conquer approach making us hate one another so that they can control all of us. Trump used that to his advantage and it worked for him too. Get ready for a fuck ton more of it, because the Dems just doubled down on it and are openly calling white people the devil for their own gain. You dont think the democrats are racist? You dont think AOC is racist? Come on, you guys whould look at the big picture and see that its not blood on each of their hands anymore, people are proudly bathing in the blood of discord, strife and hatred.

Piggy – I think the comments about Mexico sending their rapists and drug dealers etc was to create fear and awareness in order to allow him to get his border wall done. I don’t believe he’s against Mexicans that immigrate legally. Nothing wrong with being against illegal immigration, of any race. I don’t think the intention was racism. I also don’t think it was racist to tell Omar, who I view possible more racist than Trump, to go back to where she came from if she’s not happy here. I can’t tell you what to think, but that’s my view.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      That was Trump
That wasn’t Obama or bush or Reagan or Clinton
      That was Trump

      Trump owns that
Stop acting like his behavior has been in line with everyone else

If one sides specifically blames these shootings on on the POTUS when this type of thing has been going on well before he took office, it’s just a bullshit argument period. It carries absolutely no weight or legitimacy.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

you are absolutely correct. Blaming one side or the other for an individual crazy’s actions is wrong. However, for the last 3 years every criticism stated about the meat head in office has been met with “whataboutisms”

Those are training systems that fire a rifle round not a missile. If you were buying a real one, Class 3 weapons and destructive devices have to be shipped to a Class 3 FFL holder (gun dealer with a special license) who assists the buyer and holds the weapon until the background is done and the stamp received from the BATFE.

  16. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Everyone just blames the other side. The problem is with everyone involved. Trump and his rhetoric, the dems for their appose, instead of working with him, Trumps supporters for playing along with his rhetoric, the media from both sides, and even the victims themselves, at least for the El Paso shootings (not the individuals, but the group as a whole).

Once the problem is agreed upon, and only then, can a solution occur.

Everyone needs to get off their high horse at look in the mirror.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – Sure, Trump said that. That means when someone goes to a mall and goes to kill Mexicans he’s doing it on Trump’s directive? That’s stretching the narrative pretty damn far. If the guy went to the border and shot up one of those caravans you’d have more of a case there.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If I just cited a an article to an conservative periodical citing fbi statistics showing an increase of white supremacy in the last year

Here’s another one showing that hate crimes increase 226% in counties where Trump held his rallies

      https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/trump-campaign-rally-hate-crimes-study-maga-2019-3

These arguments you guys make – you are just ignoring a problem
      These are bad arguments

This isn’t a puzzle, they guy telling people that people
Crossing the border are violent criminals want a his audience to believe that

And there is a good chance that some one in the audience will be unstable

And there is a good chance unstable people will act out believing something they heard

It’s not hard to put this stuff together

      Instead, You are arguing that 1 + 1 = 3

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Again part of the problem, that isnt what he said, it’s what the media said he said.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        It’s actually what he said

“It’s true, and these are the best and the finest. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people“

This is a racist comment through and through

But I bet people will try to tell me it’s not
When people try to tell me it’s not
        I’m not persuaded
But I certainly question that’s person moral compass

I don’t understand that his comment can’t make people puke in their own mouths

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

        Causation or Correlation?

I don’t disagree that his words can cause someone who is unstable to act on their paranoia. And yes the racial divide that started becoming apparent under Obama continues to grow. But as much blame has to be payed at the feet of the politicians, media and other public figures like Don Lemon, AOC, etc. who are constantly laying the blame for all ills at the feet of anyone white. Do it long enough and often enough and even people who aren’t will eventually say “Fuck it, if I’m going to blamed for it I may as well live it.” The divisive narrative is owned by both sides.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That’s not a good excuse for trump being divisive

That’s just saying other people do it to

If America is going to be lead like a car fight between siblings arguing who started it we are doomed

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

  22. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Piggy,

If you think there isn’t hate spewing for white males in Democratic circles…you are living in a bubble. I didn’t just start with Trump either. Sure, Trump’s rhetoric can be an issue but so is ignoring it. You seem to forget the rest of that guy’s letter. He talked about politicians ignoring the immigration issue which they have for over 5 DECADES. We see Beto O’Rourke campaigning in Mexico. We see California make driver’s licenses for illegals. We see companies left and right using illegals to warp the job market. Democrats warp the votes in Cali, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico.

This isn’t just about rhetoric but politicians putting politics above their voter base. Trump was only elected because he seemed to listen to real concerns instead of propaganda. He looked to the job market instead of the feels market. He cared more about issues than being PC. Calling a person the right pronoun. Finding a new bathroom for people with mental health issues. Saying it’s racist that bad people come here. Bad people come here but where was the concern from our politicians? Bad things happen in our cities, where is the concern? Oh yeah, we can’t say anything because it will offend or anger someone. That doesn’t seem to be working. This was a frustrated white person that saw their hope being crushed and mistakenly blamed Mexicans. That doesn’t mean Democrats have stopped hating on white males or that their rhetoric is ANY better than Trump.s That’s a very myopic viewpoint.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It just happens to be backed by measurable impartial statistics

But I’m the one who’s being myoptic?

that’s not how being myoptic works

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Myopic is just looking at one issue. I guess you want all the facts behind the OTHER issues I’ve mentioned?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

No I don’t want you to list distractions

You should look up myoptic – it’s a lot more derogatory than that

I posted links to articles showing a rise of white nationalism and statitiscial support and hownit has gone up during trump and around trump

And you want to argue that I’m not considering a lot of things that jusitfy it

        That’s not being myoptic
That’s just excusing the inexcusable with other facts

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Narrow minded is one definition. That’s not very derogatory and doesn’t seem to stray from my usage.

  23. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Maybe Trump mistook the Mexican illegals for the Mariel boat lift…

  24. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s one thing for you guys to argue

    Okay he said that
Or okay it’s a harmful statement
But I like this about him

It’s another to Argue he didn’t say this
    Those stats/studies mean nothing
Some one else did it first
Or it didn’t mean what you say it means

    That’s just plausible denial

I guess that’s no surprise on a blog of dolphin fans who have to convince themselves We have a fighting chance year round

But again – the rise of white supremacy is a real problem
And Donald Trump is and has been fostering it

That’s all I am saying. And there isn’t anything I see posted today that does anythingother than rationalizing why that’s okay

  25. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I didn’t make excuses for Trump. He says some stupid shit from time to time. But I don’t think half of what he says that gets called racist is actually racist. And when the left says it is, they are guilty as he is of being divisive.

  26. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Piggy,

Where has the discussion for uncontrolled immigration been hiding at for the past 50 YEARS? When did reparations for blacks really take off? What did you think Obama’s comment, “He could have been my son” engender for some people who might have been mentally off? Especially since Trayvon went back to start trouble?! Dems have put forth a hate whitey narrative for over two years where even sane, balanced, nice dudes like Tim are sick of it. Do you think a mentally ill person wouldn’t be affected? Do you really want me to list a comprehensive list of the nasty things Dems have said that could piss a mentally ill person off? Like the dude who tried to kill Republican politicians just a short time ago?

It’s not just Trump, it’s not even close to just Trump.

Is that true or not? Is it true? Do you think their most successful people are coming here? Do you think there are rapists in any of those groups? Drug runners? The last part was over the top and I agree it was terrible. The rest…it’s just facts. I agree he should have worded it far better, but there were facts in that statement. Facts we should discuss instead of say “Racist!!!”

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Piggy, can you link the statistics please. Not some article saying there are statistics but actual statistics. TY.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s ridiculous we don’t have some form of background ID of the Congressional docket. It’s ridiculous that Trump doesn’t have his wall, that more infrastructure isn’t already being built, that the mentally ill aren’t institutionalized more often or a hundred other issues Congress sits on their ass over every year.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      It’s not true
It’s not even an accurate description of who is coming to or how they come here

      They aren’t sent like packages
That’s dehumanizing and racist to start

They often arent from Mexico just passing through it from Central America
But a racist wouldn’t know the difference

They arent anywhere near statistically committing crimes and a rate that warrants that generilzation. There are 47 million legal Hispanics Citizens who are swept in with that statement. There are an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants who are swept in with that statement

In 2017, ICE, who publishes its stats deported less than 6000 convicted criminals. That’s less than .0001% of the population the president swept in with that characterization

      That generilzation is completely untrue

If you have to ask if it’s true, you should be asking yourself why you believe that worth asking

That statement is a reckless shooting from the hip statement, completely unsupported by facts, experience or reality. It’s a dumb generalization. You should be identifying it as racist instead of asking me to prove to you it’s not…but…

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Why us it ok for any illegals to come across the border, let alone 1 criminal? The asylum thing is BS too, the numbers show 2 or 3 in 10 now claim it, when a short time ago it was 1 in 100.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s not 60 million border crossers

It should be the % 6000 is of 58million
It’s academic anyway since the the approx if undocumented people is a guess

ICE doesn’t just have jurisdiction over people crossing the border, they can deport people who have been here for years

So yeah, there are close to 60 million Hispanics In this country (not crossing) which includes legal citizens and non citizens (residents and illegals) which I’m arguing are swept into that statement

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Why would we be talking about the american citizens and deportation numbers?

Which fact are you asking me to justify with links to stats:

That there isn’t a rose of white nationalism? Something the fbi stayed to the Washington examiner. You’ll have to dig for that one yourself

Or that association a group of people with a crime is racist. That stat is 100% accurate…lol.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – I suppose there are exceptions to any rule, but people attempting to enter a country illegally are committing a crime (Although empty headed AOC disagrees), so right off the bat, their integrity and good will have to be questioned immediately. I mean, I don’t give a flying fuck what country they’re coming from before they get to Mexico, but that’s where they’re getting in from, and I’m not sure why you make such a point to define who they are. It doesn’t matter, they’re entering our country illegally, and it’s wrong! The border needs to be secure no matter what

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That’s not a violent crime Mike

Do we really have to argue the difference between rape and crossing the border?

I think you know those are vastly different acts

It should matter to you it’s factually wrong
      You should care

When you get into race or national origin – you can’t avoid the consequence of a discriminatory interpretation.

It might not matter that he told a crowd of people Mexicans are criminals, but it matters to Mexicans

stereotypes are just products of generalizations, when it comes from the highest levels, it’s just amplifying things that aren’t true bc people generally believe them to be true

You would care if some one associated you with terrorism bc you are Jewish and Israel is in the Middle East wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t that be unfair to you? You should care about accuracy. Everyone should care about accuracy. I would speak out against that if some one did it bc it’s morally wrong

That statement just plays on what that audience already believed to be true
Almost every word of it is inaccurate

Too many people can’t keep their politics out of it.

Piggy, watched a video of a border patrol agent from southern Texas a few months ago, and he was hispanic/latino. He sad in one day they detained 35 illegal immigrants within one of the caravans that were not from Mexico or Central America. I don’t remember exactly but I believe he said they were from Pakistan, China, Belgium and a couple of other Eastern European countries. What is that all about? They’re trying to get in via getting lost in the crowd. These border agents are being overburdened and they are dealing with dangerous people with agendas other than seeking the American dream.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Belgium?

      That surprises me.

When you claim asylum you have to do it within the US borders or at a point of entry

If you claim asylum at a port of entry you might lose the right to a hearing

So it kind of makes sense for people from Europe, Asia and Africa to try to sneak in from a large border, I suspect this might happen from Canada too…just a guess

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I was surprised by that to. My response was man they’re coming from everywhere.

if i have to explain why this is problematic, SMH
its the video games fox said,,,, trump watched fox for his national strategy, and went with it

And yeah the left attacks him and probably would anyhow, but Trump doesn’t even care about the middle. He’s at like 42% approval rating with a great economy. Can’t even tell you how historically bizarre that is.

  44. D's avatar D says:

Piggy, Mexican illegals aren’t the problem to me. Some of these people work harder than Americans for much less. I think thats pretty honorable, the problem is not these guys its the other mixed in that aren’t here to carve out a life for themselves. Immigration is the only form of vetting we have and with that being bypassed there is a real issue. Now the borders aren’t secure and very bad things can happen to a country who isn’t paying attention to who is within its borders. I dont know if a Wall is the right answer, to me we are too advanced technology for something so archaic to be used to secure yourself, but there dont seem to be any other suggestions, only just opposition to the need for anything, which is becoming very untrue as time progresses. Just like some of the democrats argue that certain policies and freedoms are outdated, so is the open door policy. Our world isnt safe enough to do nothing.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not talking about the wall or policy proposals D

I’m talking about hateful rhetoric that is undeniably racist
Which I don’t think has anything to do with policy
You can have tough policy positions without smearing people

But for the record – we don’t have an open door policy though
I don’t know why you think that
It’s tougher to become a citizen now than it’s ever been

You actually can’t become a legal citizen without being a resident first
And residency is really limited (asylum, Marriage, a lottery, family, work visas)
We don’t even offer citizenship to people who served in our military whichbis absurd

A lot of people/candidates have a lot of different ideas
And if you think Mexicans illegals aren’t a problem – you should examine that more bc what trump is doing is pretty inconsistent with that

      – Some people want a slow down both legal and illegal immigration (I think that more accurately describes trump)
      – Others want merit based immigration
      – others want a Clear path to citizenship
      – Others want to change broader or more narrow asylum rules
I’ve said before I want to issue work visas and collect revenue while people are given reporting requirements – a process that would take a few years to become a citizen

      – it’s not just trumps way or wide open borders
There are a ton of different ways to address immigration

I gotta say the information that people have on this subject is relatively low. People seem to just believe things aren’t that aren’t true and that’s a problem with some of these conversations

  45. who knew terrorsim was so easy to solve? fox news knew!
    and the president agrees

so now stopping terrorism is up to us, we toss our video games in the trash and the shooting is all finished

I don’t think Trump is the best we could get, he’s just the best we’ve had apply in a while. which says something awful. It says the field is very weak, and there’s an agenda at work. I know you think the exact opposite but did you see the Dem debates? They will say ANYTHING. Trump didn’t during the Repub debates in 2016. All we needed was ANYONE to talk about fixing immigration. Just ONE of those worthless shitbags. NO ONE wanted to. We still NEED ANYONE to work on inner city violence. Who will step up? Who in Congress is passing laws? Who passes legislation, with no poison pills attached? NO ONE. Why?!

Sure, we need people working on white nationalists but I’ve read earlier reports. It’s been a decades long problem. The FBI monitors them VERY closely. There’s lots of them out there. They don’t have a lot of members but they are armed, dangerous, and fanatics. I don’t think the FBI is watching them less closely though and the FBI gets a LOT of money to function every year. McVey kinda forced the FBI to take these types of groups seriously.

When I look at the massive machine that was set up to get Hillary elected…I shudder. Bought and paid, her turn, women’s turn, her due from waiting in ’08, etc. Disgusting. People have the gall to say Russia had any real influence as we see O’Rourke peddling in Mexico, Hillary pulling hot sauce out of her bag, Biden taking Ukrainian bribes to enrich his dirty son, Kamala .saying the opposite of her record, Bernie doing anything to get another house, and Warren using her white privilege her entire career while talking about everyone else’s. and lastly the media pushing Dem talking points every day. They pushed the 90% Hillary win narrative they created to get the results they expected. Her loss opened up the true colors of the DNP. That side is poison and after 2 decades of voting Dem, I’ll never do it again unless there’s a 180 so hard necks crack.

Back to football, who are the TEs we think will get the most action this year? O Leary and who?

If you haven’t seen the Nick Buoniconti documentary on HBO, “The many lives of Nick Buoniconti” you should check it out. I’m watching it right now and it’s really good.

Nobody needs a high-powered putter like that…a Bullseye Old Standard works just fine.

    8 ÷ 2(2+2)

Fuck.. you are correct but I’m still mans best friend and apes haven’t fully evolved unless it’s math problems. 🤓 I meant to say 8 double shots.

lol, we apes can only dream of reaching the pinnacle of being ‘man’s best friend’ 😉

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I agree. There are those who argue that multiplication and division are given the same importance and say the answer is 1

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Multiplication and division have equal importance but always operate from left to right, then addition and subtraction are also given equal importance also operating from left to right.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I see what you are saying, some people think that those two operations are done concurrently, lol. Well, it doesn’t surprise me .

  93. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That math problem is just an example of how so many of the things we learn in school don’t necessarily translate into the real world. There are a number of jobs that require higher math knowledge, but most people go their whole lives without having to know the rules of the order of operations and forget them within a few years of leaving school.

Math was always easy for me, but remembering the rules of comma placement? When is it proper to use a semi-colon? Who discovered uranium? Forget it.

Piggy – You’re talking about two different topics then. If you’re saying that certain Latin American countries are viewed as possible terrorist havens, that’s different than them along with other races and nationalities trying to get through our border via Mexico. If people from Israel are trying to get here illegally through Mexico then they will be held up just like everyone else. You’re talking about prejudices and racism, not border control. All I’m saying is our borders need to be secure and we have to vet the people that are trying to come in here, we can’t just have a turnstile because that will make it too easy for terrorists to get in.

  97. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bookman – I still like YOU! Even though you hate the blog. 🙂

You know we allow talk about politics, and I think you can should give credit when it can be discussed w/o major turmoil and fights. We try to allow everyone to talk about anything, and until the season starts, there will be more off topic discussions.

Can’t wait for Thursday to see if any of the penalties are cleaned up. One good thing about Rosen being second team is him building that relationship with Preston W. Hopefully they will be building blocks for us to finally get to playoff quality football.

It’s not going to be a national broadcast right? Do you have to purchase the preseason package through NFL.com?
