Training camp notes – Dolphins lose a great historical team player – Nick Buoniconti

Today HOF Miami Dolphins LB Nick Buoniconti passed away. He was the leader of the “No Name Defense” that helped the Dolphins win two Super Bowls. He was a very charitable, impressive individual outside of sports. He will be sorely missed.

RIP Nick Buoniconti

So training camp is here and I’ve failed to feel any excitement other than the dact that it started. I don’t think it’s the team’s fault necessarily, i think it’s just the nature of practices, how short they are, and how much less physical they have to be to meet today’s safety standards. We also had one of our coaches fired this week, pretty odd at this juncture. You could look at this a few different ways. If you want the positive spin, it’s great that Flores recognized a deficiency early enough and immediately took action. Some guys may have waited around to see if there was any improvement which could easily have cost us some poor play early on. Also on a positive spin, putting the O-line in the hands of Dave DeGuglielmo is a good thing as he is a very experienced coach, coaching since 2004. If you want to look at the negative side, Flaherty wasn’t a great hire for the rookie Head Coach Flores. He was also previously the O-line coach in 2017 for the Dolphins and I needn’t remind you we were awful as per usghe at that time. In any case, let’s hope for the best in this regard.

I was hoping to see some player really show well, and so far it’s just been a whole lot of “eh”. We signed former Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns, who played briefly last year for the Cowboys. I really liked Hurns when he was tearing up the league along with Allen Robinson at Jacksonville. If we get something close to that Allen Hurns we did very well. I was unrealistically hoping for a strong start from QB Josh Rosen. I didn’t really expect it this early but was hoping for a surprise. Instead we found out he never had to identify the MLB in any stop in his football career. Seems so odd to me, I thought it was a given. This doesn’t make him any less a QB, but just something he will need to learn, and Josh Rosen has been a player who studies the game, so bet on him getting this down, as well as the offense too.

Anyone think maybe Charles Harris would be tearing things up? Another thing I hoped for, but it’s very early yet, and he’s going to have a chance to make some hay as the preseason games begin 8/8, just a week and a half away! One guy who the coaches seem to be very high on early on is LB Jerome Baker. He’s going to be an impact player, taking off from where he left last year. He can do it all, run, tackle, cover and rush the passer and he will be asked to do all of those things. An early revelation has Minkah playing mostly slot corner, but I would think by the time the season starts, he will be doing a lot more as he did last season. As long as he’s doing things he’s great at, let it happen.

Things I look for to change in the next couple of weeks. I want Gug’s to try and find that starting 5 as quickly as he can and get them playing together as much as possible. I think the earlier we do that the better chance we have of having a cohesive unit out there. I also want to see guys take step forward, especially the aforementioned Charles Harris and Josh Rosen. Whether Rosen begins the season as the starter is not crucial to me, but to know he’s good enough to do so if needed is. I would really like it if he makes leaps and bounds in understanding the offense and making better throws under duress. If he doesn’t accomplish this, we may not see him this year as a starter unless of course something happens to Fitz or he just plays awful, neither of which I want to see.Training camp runs until Aug 6th, and then our forst game action as I mentioned will be August 8th at home against Atlanta.

GO DOLPHINS!

Fitz should be salivating, with the opportunities he may have deep, but as much of a gunslinger as he is, I think Rosen has a better skill set to work with these guys.

If we can just block someone…I expect a lot of 2 TE sets.

More good news, especially for those wearing Rosen colored glasses . . .

Dolphins need Rosen to work with first-team for clarity of competition

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Not only that but if he does take over eventually, he will have to build that chemistry at the worst time…during the season when there is limited time to do anything but the basic gameplan for each week.

  37. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m torn on Zeke. I really don’t like players trying to force changes to their contracts but he is one of their most talented players and a huge focus of the team JJ wants built. It helps his narrative that their QB isn’t very good. but I don’t think he deserves a new contract before Cooper.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I do. I know he has 2 years left, but those 2 years don’t add up to Coopers one year where he’ll be making just shy of $14M. What has Cooper done for the Cowboys? He played a little more than half a season for the Cowboys. Zeke has had nearly 900 carries and he’s at a position where he is much more likely to get injured.

    —————————————————-
I think he has been off and on with the ones a bit, but with Davis moved out to RT because Mills is injured, they have this line up as an interim starting group. Mills comes back they probably kick Davis back in to OG.

  39. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Mike,

Good points I think Amari was instrumental in getting a 3-4 team to 10-6 and the divisional round. They looked so much better because the QB needed top flight talent to make up for his weaknesses. Zeke does some of the same thing but there’s a lot more to it. Amari is closer to FA status and hasn’t caused anyone issues unlike Zeke. He’s played in 61 of a possible 64 games. Zeke on the other hand has only played in 40 of a possible 48 and has already seen a suspension and almost two. If it was just an apples to apples comparison between WRs, he’s not as valuable as Amari because he brings a ton of baggage.

  41. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    From Omar:

    STOCK UP

Left guard Michael Deiter concluded his second week of practicing with the first-team offense as the starting left guard, and he’s making far less mistakes these days. Deiter, a former Wisconsin standout the Dolphins selected in the third-round of the 2019 draft, has tightened up on his technique. Deiter will likely be given an opportunity prove he deserves to be the season-opening starter, playing ahead of Chris Reed during the preseason.

Well that is certainly nice to hear!! Keep up the good work Deiter!

  42. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Also from Omar:

    STOCK DOWN

The Dolphins are entering year three of trying to make Charles Harris, the team’s 2017 first-round pick, a respectable defensive end. The problem is Harris struggled at setting the edge on running plays, and that is evident when Miami worked on its running game, which was the case on Tuesday. Harris was getting manhandled by Miami’s tight end Dwayne Allen, allowing running plays to get outside of his lane. That’s a recipe for disaster if it happens in games.

Well THIS sucks. Another first round bust.

So why exactly are we playing Bobby McCain at safety and Fitzpatrick at NB?

Am I hearing this right. Is that what is going on?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It seems the coaches liked what they saw of Minkah at nickel last year and feel McCain’s got a skill set to play safety.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I really just hope it’s about getting everyone expirence at multiple positions and we move McCain back to nickel and fitz to safety

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

But I recall McCain being pretty good at nicks a couple of years ago and since then he’s been bounced around a bit

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Like I said the other day, Preston Williams would have been a 2nd or 3rd pick if not for off the field issues but based on talent alone.

      What did he do?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Domestic assault and he was considered immature and troubled according to his teammates. But all signs are that he’s turning his life around and maturing and taking full advantage of his opportunity in Miami.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I know he transferred and that cost him some playing time

But that’s nothing to judge him harshly for
        That’s just ncaa rules

  46. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    ▪ With Rowe sidelined, undrafted UTEP rookie Nik Needham spent a second consecutive day as the starting boundary cornerback opposite Xavien Howard. Needham dropped a potential interception from Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I hope Rowe can get healthy soon. I don’t want to see Needham being abused every pass. You know they won’t be trying X if they have “raw meat” ready to be torn apart on the other side.

I think most of the positions on this D are pretty fluid, so best calling them DB LB and DL, because i think the ideas of more specific terms like NCB or SLB or DT might also be really hard to quantify game to game if not snap to snap.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes, I agree. According to each situation. The one I’m most interested to see is the cover zero, it’s what the cheats and Ravens use when they must get a stop or when they just want to put max pressure on the O. The cheats used it against the Falcons to rally late in SB LI. They also used it against us on a Monday nighter most of the first half, we came in undeafeated 3-0 I believe. I think wake tore his Achilles in that game.

Also he had a natural instinct to step back when h felt pressure and not forward, so he stepped into the pressure a lot of times. When it came to his pocket presence, he really was only a couple f concepts away from being good with it, but those were ones where i think the lack of time at the QB position in college really affect him having trained out of him those bad instincts.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

  76. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You must feel like a ping pong ball. The problem I see with doing that is there’s no big picture, for example should high powered assault rifles been banned? On the surface you’d think they obviously should, but behind the scenes there’s other things to consider. I’d like to leave it there, so we dont get into a huge partisan discussion.

I’m just saying each subject leads to something else, which path do you ultimately want to go down?

So first interview in over 17 years, and via phone nonetheless. Times have changed. Next one will be either a video interview or an in person interview. I’m not up to the new lingo and catch phrases that people want to hear like “I want to be challenged”, or “I like to problem solve”, blah blah blah. I just acted like myself which means I probably won’t be getting a follow up interview. lol

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Acting like yourself is exactly what you should have done. Worst thing is when the person comes off as all “what you want to hear.” In one interview the answer to “what’s your biggest obstacle to overcome” was actually “I just care too much about doing a good job.”

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It always makes me wonder why they don’t have a full time life coach!

Let me drive you drunk bastard!
No you don’t need the .45acp or the 9mm to go out tonight!
Don’t take the supplements you bought on line from Haiti!

Cowboys did that with Dez Bryant. Had to hit about to lose your career for it to happen, but did seem to work more or less.

Can someone get Stanger under control? He’s gone from pot stocks to potshots. Stop him before he comes out with a diss track mixtape.

    Mike,
I have a phone interview today too.

Good luck pal! I’m so detached from the process, I have no idea what an acceptable amount of time it will be for our next communication or if there even will be a next communication. Every 15 minutes of no email or phone call is a fail for me. I need some of Stanger’s pot, either a shot or a pie,

Generally speaking you would interview all your applicants and make your decision on who moves forward before any notifications. Could be several days to a week or more.

One of the reasons I started my own firm when I left my old one is bc I didn’t want to go through the interview process all over again

    I feel for you guys
    I hate that experience

But being the boss now, I gotta say, it’s probably more important people just be themselves so that I can judge what I’m working with

I don’t have any full time employees – so I’m not an expert, but I’ve hired people
For temp work and most of the time I’m just trying to gauge how much of my time they will demand and how much they will cost me

  88. D's avatar D says:

Oh you were interviewing….. not you were interviewing someone else.

Dont worry, you are too old to be a new hire so you can just rest easy knowing you didnt get it. 🙂

  89. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike all of that what they want to hear is nice, but I took a class many years ago on getting a job. Stupid counselor said I needed it for my degree, which I was pissed about at the time, but …

The only thing that really matters is using examples of what you’ve done in a past job to answer the question, it’s how I got my last 3 jobs, when i wouldn’t have, if i didnt use them.

In my interview for blackjack dealer school, many years ago, they started off by saying the competition was fierce and i didnt have enough time in at the company, so basically you aren’t going to get in. Then asked how I’d bring players to my table, if I was on a game with no players.

I said, in my previous job the company had a booth at the Reno Rodeo, selling their product. We had to sign up new customers. I was new, so my sales were about average, but the next month we did the same thing for the state fair and I had the most sales anyone had ever gotten from that event on our company (true story). They asked what I did in the booth, I said, talked to people walking by and got them to buy.

After my answer they said we have a super star here. After hearing that I new I got in and I did. 250 employees interviewed for 12 spots.

Be real Piggy, you knew they wouldn’t hire you. I mean who takes a pig with a lumpy business suit (hiding the wings of course) seriously. At a BBQ joint, you are a star but as a lawyer, i mean how can you convince a jury of people who an only think about lunch break to listen to you and not day dream about roasting you.

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – Yeah, I’ve decided to throw my hat in the ring. I’m not happy with the direction our current dictator administrator is taking our company. They have allowed about 8-10 good people quit in the last 3 months and don’t seem to trying hard to replace them. Instead, they are just dumping the workload on those still employed. I feel like that that’s how they’re going to try and operate, stretching everyone in 3 directions at once and not having a smaller payroll. I don’t play that shit. More and more are just going to jump ship and I want to make sure I’m not the last man standing.

  93. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Blackjack dealer eh? Pretty cool!

  94. OD is right, Steve Ross needs to sell the team, he cant get anything right
he always dumps on the season ticket holders and the players.

now Ross has decided in the wake of multiple shootings over the last week, that now is the best time to throw a quarter million dollars a plate fund raiser for trumps re election
this has infuriated many of the players and fans , and of course Kenny Stills has already called out Ross for his hypocrisy
i get the feeling Stills might leave, thanks to Ross, time will tell.
    but
this has the potential to drive players and fans away from the dolphins, on the eve of their first preseason game

Mr, ROss, doesnt care much about the upcoming season, the Dolphins , its players and fans by his actions and uncaring attitude,

when its much more profitable to host the trump and his merry band of babywhiners at his house for big money

this is an insensitive, unthinking, and unqualified team owner in many ways, and he may be able to hold success back from the Dolphins for awhile with his ineptitude
fuck Steve Ross, hes a phony owner, his heart isnt into it, and count Me in as one of the fans that believe he needs to sell the team so the team can reach its full potential

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Pardon me, but Steve Ross has a life and affiliations outside of owning the Miami Dolphins. Kenny Stills has a life and other affiliations outside of the playing for Steve Ross who pays his salary. If you could just for a second think, that maybe both are entitled to do as they see fit in both regards, maybe your previous post would make a lot less sense to you.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He has other businesses, so not everything in his life revolves around the Miami Dolphins. Kenny Stills doesn’t worry about Steve Ross thinks, so why should Steve Ross care what Kenny Stills thinks?

      • agreed, why should ross care what anyone thinks, why should the players bust their ass for a thoughtless owner?

sounds like a great recipe for a championship, ME first!, actrually, Not

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

David — I don’t like Trump, but if Ross does that is his politics. He’s also worth like $8 billion, pledged to give at least half to charity and has set up a bunch of programs for his players. He also just did the biggest private development in US history on the West Side of NY.

He’s big enough that owning the Dolphins is a hobby. He lives his life like he wants. And seems a real good dude. Even if yeah he doesn’t care about what you, I or Stills think about him throwing a political fundraiser.

  96. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s going to be a work in progress, but I think we’re going to get a good indication of how the year is going to go, from watching preseason game 1. Sure we’ll see improvement throughout the year, but that’s not what I’m talking about. We’ll know, if it’s the same ole Dolphins, or if Flores brings something drastically new. The score wont matter, it’s how the team does certain things, like blocking, penalties, physicality…

  97. Ross is a big real estate guy, he bought the dolphins like an investor purchases a piece of property

someday ross can sell the phins and make a huge profit for his investment, even if the team goes 016 for 10 years straight? he STILL makes huge return on his investment

thats all that really matters to him by his actions, unfortunately we prefer a team owner that would commit to the players and fans and try for a championship

we wont get that from Ross, he just wants money, and lots of it

he owns the team and can do what he wishes, but the players and fans get cheated by his greed
