Most of us have seen the first preseason game against Atlanta. If you have, you saw quite the performance from rookie undrafted WR Preston Williams. I was watching NFLN this morning and they were doing this segment where Burleson, Schrager and Brandt each pick the most impressive preseason performance from week 1. I’m thinking there’s no way any of these guys pick someone from the Dolphins, especially since Schrager didn’t pick one. Burleson chose S Taylor Rapp of the Los Angeles Rams. Schrager, who seems to like the Dolphins chose Browns LB Mack Wilson and I was convinced no Miami Dolphins player could possible get an honor. To my surprise, Kyle Brandt chose Miami Dolphins WR Preston Williams. He was gushing about his talent and how refined he looked. Williams finished with 4 catches for 97 yards and a crazy 24.3 YPR average. It was also the quality and difficulty of his catches , a one hand grab down the sidelines, a toe tapping marvel on the sidelines, going up over defensive backs, just a great looking day for a potential impact receiver. Could he be what Devante Parker was supposed to be? At 6’5 218 his size alone is impressive. At his pro day he ran 4.53 and with a 31.5″ vertical and 116″ broad jump. Nothing spectacular. Just turn on some practice footage or game tape if you want to see what he is.
There’s a long way to go before it’s a given that Preston Williams is actually on the 53 man roster when the season begins, but he’s turning heads every day, not just in the games but in practice as well. In yesterday’s scrimmage with the Buccaneers, Wilson made some pro moves and shook the Bucs DB like he didn’t belong on the same playing field with him. He’s working hard to make the roster and it looks like not only will he make the roster but he might actually be a difference maker. The last big investment we made in a WR was none other than former 1st RD pick in 2015 Devante Parker, 14th overall. Williams is taking the path of former Miami Dolphins WR Davone Bess. The Dolphins signed Bess as an UDFA in 2008. Not only did Bess make the roster but he caught 54 passes for 554 yards and 1 TD. I’m not comparing Williams to Bess in any other way other than the fact that were both UDFA’s who can make an impact. Williams ceiling is much higher than Davone Bess’ simply because Williams has the size to and athletic ability to be a real difference maker, and he plays on the outside as opposed to being more of a slot/possession receiver that Bess was.
Preston Williams basically played one full season of college ball, playing last season at Colorado State. He transferred from Tennessee in his Junior year and didn’t play until his Senior year, last year. What a season William’s had though. 96 receptions for 1345 yards and 14 TD’s. That elite production. Williams was not invited to the NFL Combine because of an incident in which he was charged for misdemeanor charges of tampering and harassment for allegedly shoving a woman in a domestic dispute.. Much like the luck of having Laremy Tunsil fall into our hands, this could end up being another gift from the NFL Gods. Williams could have easily been a 2nd RD pick and there isn’t a shot in hell we would be selecting a WR in the 2nd or even the 3rd RD last year. Getting Williams to sign here was a great boon, but give the rest of the of the credit to Preston Williams who is working his butt off to be on this team. Besides, don’t the football Gods owe us for Yatil Green?

I don’t know what the coaches will decide but I hope they go with Rosen because they can always go with Fitz if he struggles. Fitz is not part of the future but Rosen could be.
Yeah saw that but not sure it means anything at this time other than giving Fitz the start this time. It sure wasn’t because of his performance or Rosen being bad. Flores wanted Rosen to play against the 1st unit of a Todd Bowles defense last night so that’s why he started. This 3rd PS game will decide who starts the opener though and the starter likely won’t play in the 4th PS game.
Just going to put this out there to see if you see what this really says and why this is so fucked up.

In 30 snaps last night Charles Harris had 4 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 4 QB hits. That’s what he needed to show. Maybe he’s finally healthy. Maybe it was one game. Good to see whatever it is. 🙂

Wyo, M13 always felt we should have taken Mason Rudolph over Jerome Baker in the 3rd round.
This is true, but as I said, we shall see. Baker really seems to be one of the better up-and-comers in the league. Nothing would make me happier than to see him become what many of us think he will become… and that is VERY GOOD(!), to the tune of we were right in not taking Rudolph (and by extension, we making the right decision in trading for Rosen).
I’m absolutely astonished by how quickly Baker has grown… if he continues his growth, he’s soon to be a fan favorite.

Watching the Baldybreakdown above, when I watch Rosen I see Bob Griese poise, scrambling and awareness, with a better arm.

It was meant to be. He moves around to avoid the rush, not cluelessly into the arms of a waiting defender, the way someone recently did. He sees what’s developing both with the rush and down field, he doesn’t often lock on to a receiver, and looks great when he has time.
I’m ok with Fitz starting the first couple of games though. Let him watch a couple first and dont throw him into the Ravens pass rush, with that awful line.

Reading the local reporters, they all want Rosen to start immediately. What are the thoughts here now and have they changed any this preseason? I am fine with Rosen sitting the first 4 until the first break. I think the extra few games doesn’t make a huge difference for coaches in their evaluations but it might help solidify the OL a bit and give him a breather before getting destroyed. Very few of the most hit QBs ever succeed but both Baker and Mahomes benefited from some time off before they were thrown in the fire.
I’m a big competition advocate!

But I’m with you. They don’t need to see more than say 8 games with him to figure out what they have. If he earns more then he does.
They all want Rosen because for 3 weeks in a row he has by a wide margin outplayed Fitz. From the final scrimmage to the first 2 pre season games he has clearly been the best QB. Isn’t that the way competition supposed to work? The best guy wins the job.
Good call, Ken. I agree about being the best but don’t mind if they give him a few more games to get up to speed. His running pass was a really good showcase of what he can bring.
Don’t forget Rosen is not a rookie. He had his trial by fire last year
New Age – My hope was that Rosen would earn the job. If he doesn’t play well enough to take it, then I think it’s important to go with the best guy. The players don’t ever want to see a guy inserted into the starting lineup if he doesn’t belong there, especially one as important as QB. Players know when something is afoul.
He should earn it at some point. Guy already looks good and he hasn’t been here very long.

And you know this how? I have read that Fitz gets to start game 3 of preseason, If that’s the case it’s highly likely he gets the nod on game 1.
the only one who knows who played better at the QB position is Flores and i’m sure that will be revealed at the start of our next pre-season game against Jax.
Fitz looked like he is just playing out the string.
Even that awesome beat down of the DB makes me think Fitz is like “what the hell may as well” in the sense that he is not going to be the man going forward.
He seemed more than unhappy with the terrible blocking of the OL he had left to him because of working with the 2nd unit.
Fitz has barely had any playing time in pre season, he played 2 series in the first game and the third qtr against the bucs whereas Rosen has played more than 4 of the 8 qtrs already played.
this means either fitz is that bad or they want to protect him by giving him limited reps, i tend to believe the latter
Rosen made some more terrific throws as far as accuracy is concerned and pace on the ball.
He also moves around in the pocket well.
He took some sacks,
but he really could have been sacked almost every throw with that leaky line play.
He made that one really bad INT throw, but it looked to me like the rookie WR ran the wrong route. Preston was open where he was as he moved downfield, but Rosen threw the ball back toward the middle of the field, as if he expected Preston to break the route off at that distance.
Maybe the ball was wet, but the look on the faces of Rosen and Williams was more one of miscommunication.
There’s no excuses, throwing a pick is like writing a check, it’s the QBs fault.
as for requiring rosen to play because we have to know if we draft a qb next year……i’m not buying that!
these players and coaching staff don’t give a rats ass who they will draft next year, they are out there for one reason only…too win games!
those players that give them the best chance to win will be playing.
Also on the short throw he bounced out to Ford that cost us the TD, he hitched and pulled back a second before that. This sometimes means the WR was open, then got covered up.
I think Ford sometimes rounds off his routes. The replay seemed to show that. Then his speed got him a little open again, and the desperate situation of 4th and goal meant Rosen had to pull the trigger and hope for the best. If the throw hung, it would’ve been a 99 yard pick 6, so throwing low and away and turning the ball over on downs was the better option.
I think in the regular season that entire sequence might have been run differently. Plus with starters.
We haven’t put 22 starters on the field at the same time yet.
I watched Wilkins very closely during the Bucs game and he got handled, i thought Godcheau and taylor made a better team at DT.
Wow, Wilkins took on a triple team at NT allowing Harris the room to beat his man one on one for a sack. He was consistently disruptive at DT shedding blocks against the run. He got his sack at LDE. Everyone reported how well he played but you have the opposite view. I guess not everyone sees the same things. 😉
Might depend on which plays you and Orob watched. Looked good on the sack and the pressures, but then those are the only ones a ball watcher like me sees. Was surprised at how stout he was. Looked more tall and lanky on draft day scaring the heck out of Goodell. 🙂
Our interior DL looked good most of the night. I don’t think Wilkins got handled other than a play here and there because sometimes the other other guy wins the battle. I thought he looked like the player we took at at #13.

Of course he has to improve on some parts of his game. It took Brady years to do that.
Rosen is still in his rookie year as he did not play 16 games last year, and that’s not even to mention the total lack of coaching he got even for those.
Leftwich’s offense did not look too sleek over on the Bucs side all week in the shared practices as Winston threw a lot of picks and other trash, and Leftie was the GOOD OC Rosen had last year.
Very few HCs get fired after one year (Cam cough cough Cameron). So that was an epic fail at coaching up the rookie QB.
He did play in 13 games last year. He’s not a rookie but he was in a bad situation in ARZ for sure. Now there is this new thought that a young QB only has a very limited time to develop. So will the 2020 class only get a year or two to prove they’re great or not? It’s absurd.
I think Rosen was late a beat on that throw, just as he was late a beat on the one to Ford a bit later in the game. Cost us the TD. But we had them bottled up in their end and there was no Turnover.
Only good thing to say is it’s still August, and the boy has made progress. No one is saying he has stagnated. He started well behind Fitz and has improved so much he has moved past him.
Not like the cagey 14-yr vet is gonna get worse over the course of a couple 3 weeks.
Josh is still only 22 and will not turn 23 until after the season.
They say Rosen was getting his turn with the ones, but his RB was the #3 or #4, and his WRs were Kenny Stills and the #5 and #6 and #7. He had to recover from at least 3 drops, several whiff-sacks, and about 8 penalties. And 2 rookie guards and a Center from Appalachian F’n State.

We swarm to the ball and stuff the run better than last year..
We have discovered a LB Eguavoen and some good core ST guys.
We might have a sleeper star at WR.
Tunsil is elite.
Ballage is an emerging star.
Xavien is a bona fide all pro.
Even Harris looks to be awakening.
Our DL front seven is confusing offenses.
The place-kicking game looks very good.
We have not lost anyone important to a season ending injury.
Agreed, and we don’t look like a lost talentless team even when playing without some of our best players.

He’s the real deal from talent to prototype size and athleticism, to character. He was one of my favorite prospects before we drafted him because of that.
From what I’m seeing even with a limited group of players especially the more established defenders, is we have enough big, physical players up front to challenge opponents as we dial up the smaller quicker guys to blow up plays. When the bigger guys get there even better. 🙂
I don’t think our defense is going to be an issue unless we suffer too many injuries. Once again we need to see the offense start putting up more points consistently.
And I did not forget LB Baker.
He might become an all pro also if he keeps playing like this.
I said that after last year. I think he could have a monster season. He has an impressive skill set and is very active. The coaches view him as a 3 down LB who can play in any formation on any down. Isn’t that the type of LB we’ve all been wanting for years? 😉
I’m still concerned about the pass rush. When teams get to really game planning, I think our guys will be neutralized more than we’ve seen, unless guys play better than the back of their cards so to speak. Everyone gets hyped about Eguavoen, but I don’t think realistically he’s going to be on the field much at all. He may give us hope however as a future replacement for Kiko, which could happen sooner than later though.
Not trying to be a downer, just being realistic, I think.
All we can do is see which players flash and not seeing the main 53 play yet. I like what I’m seeing from the defense. It should get better unless we lose key guys we can’t replace in-season.
For me the offense is the biggest question until we see OL, TE and QB upgrade.
Mike, the best thing to do is be realistic. Our run defense looks suspect as well, but its preseason and I dont really care how we look in the preseason. I have very little expectation of this team anyway, so if they do great then that’s a bonus.
Outside of a few runs that happen we’ve been stifling the run. We’re not at full strength but neither are our opponents. We’ll see when we get to 53 and the RS games begin.
To me, the team feels fresh. (Except for Reshad)

We’re a young team now, we have very little in the way of older vets, especially on defense. Except for Ryan Fitz, Kilgore and Mills, it’s pretty young on O as well. That’s a good thing, we may be able to unearth some young undiscovered talent like Eguavoen, maybe Hanks, Ledbetter, and possibly resurrect some careers like Orchard, Carradine, and Nkemdiche
On the Travis Wingfield tweet earlier, I don’t subscribe to the same philosophy on QBs. As much as I like the 2020 class so far, we still don’t know how they will turn out. Every year there are a couple ‘studs’ that turn out to be backups or worse. I think this group looks awesome so far but Matt Barkley, RGKnee, Jake Locker, Browning, Deshone Kizer, etc were once hot commodities too. It’s a grass being greener situation

i focused on him in the first qtr re-watching the game, from that view he was getting handled by one
ol, he was double teamed a few times but wasn’t really necessary. i didn’t watch him the whole game though.
when we had Godchau and Taylor in there i noticed a better central push.
maybe he’s great, i just didn’t see it for the limited time i focused on him.

One of Baldinger’s most obvious takeaways? The versatility which we saw from Christian Wilkins. The Dolphins played him at base defensive end, they played him at 3-technique (in the B-gap) and they played him on the nose. And Wilkins was productive everywhere. That was the expectation for Wilkins coming out of Clemson, so seeing that materialize so early is a testament to Wilkins’ versatility and football intelligence.
If Wilkins can flash this much when he’s just “getting comfortable” at the pro level, imagine what he can look like when he’s mastered the mental side of the NFL.

All other charges against Walton were dismissed.
Walton’s probation can be reduced to 3 months if he has no issues, his attorney tells me.

Flores obviously takes after Belicheat when it comes to discussing injuries and posting the “depth chart” Belicheat has thumbed his nose at the league for years barely following the letter of the rules while ignoring the intent of the rule.
Flores has had Davis listed as the starting right guard since preseason started. I position he has not take one snap at during a game.

Hard to miss Baker when he’s in there. Might be a reason why they gave him the helmet with the speaker on D. Also might be that the new scheme is a perfect fit for him.

That was the case in college for Jameis too, he just could slip tackls really well.
Coach don’t care if everybody else has a hard time tackling him too. He needs to find a way. Doesn’t matter how fast you get there if you can’t make the sack. That being said, the kid is doing everything pretty well and you don’t see the issue with him being small coming up all that often.
Im not in disagreement with you, he needs to improve there, but all things given, you sometimes have to give credit to another players strength. Be the one that can bring him down, as difficult as that may be.
I think that was a good learning experience for the preseason for Baker to get slipped by Jameis.
Winston is famous for giving that quarter turn right at the moment of impact, so what you thought was leverage turns into a hand tackle, and he’s way too strong to tackle with your fingers.
You think Jameis is not looking and doesn’t see you coming so you get overconfident and try to bring the wood, but then you only get jersey or a hip, which throws the tackler’s body weight off. With a guy like him, you have to box him in and make him back up or circle away, so help can come.
Unfortunately, he might cut it loose before the help gets there. That’s how Big Ben used to make those heart-breaking late throws when DLs thought they had him sacked.
So what teams are teaching against those guys now is to go in high up in his eyes so he can’t see and just run right through hiim. Even if you don’t make the tackle. Neither Ben nor Jameis is fast enough to hurt you with his legs. It’s those late throws to guys coming open 30 yards downfield that kill a defense.
Man Antonio Brown needs to shut the fuck up and play. He is ruining himself. He’s the new TO.

Sam Eguavoen’s emergence and Jerome Baker’s evolution — and the fact Miami is expected to play three linebackers less than half the time — have left Kiko Alonso and Raekwon McMillan in a tenuous position. McMillan obviously is not going to be released, but his playing time likely will be impacted.
Alonso’s standing is less clear, with a club source declining to assure that he will definitely be here this season. Cutting him would save almost no cap space but would come with substantial cash savings.
Releasing Alonso would carry $8.2 million in dead money and just a $25,000 cap savings but would save Miami $4 million in cash, per overthecap.com.
Well McMillan and Alonso have been dealing with injuries and haven’t been practicing or playing in games so who knows what the big picture is. But I wouldn’t be surprised if a team came calling about Alonso we’d listen to offers.
I’m actually higher on Alonso than many, but wouldn’t be surprised. He’s a cut candidate next year and not like winning games this season is the biggest goal.
The NCAA preseason is out and its much the same teams at the top that have been inthe postseason the last few years

I think it’s great that we have at least a preliminary starting 5 on the OL in Tunsil-Deiter-Kilgore-Calhoun-Davis. They need to build that chemistry and communication. Would love to see them play a good amount of snaps in the 3rd PS game.

I wasn’t on the board during the Bucs game so I didn’t see the reaction. What do ya’ll think about the pass interference replay call that went against us? I saw it live, but didn’t have it recorded, so haven’t been able to go back.
My impression was the Bucs receiver was pushing off, and our guy held his arm. Very far from clear video evidence in my book, and not what this replay call is supposed to be about.
I hate it. As someone wrote, the most powerful people in the NFL today are the refs. Giving them more power to suddenly affect a game is a horrible idea. The idea was terrible from the beginning. Ref screws the Saints in big game in a big way…so we give them more power? Everyone knows OL hold every single play. Are we suddenly going to call those too? The NFL under Goodell (and this crop of owners) has been an unmitigated disaster for the game but brings them the green. Enjoy it while it lasts, owners.
Any thoughts about next year’s team? I know it’s way too early but will we really give Parker a contract? Guy has been a terrible pick so far. If Harris turns it around, is one year of production enough? If so, how much production? Does anyone think Stills, his lack of production, and intractable stances keep him here next year? Will any of these be here even if they ball this year; Alonso, Wilson, Jones, McDonald? I see that injury report every day and every one of those guys has an injury history. I hope we keep going young because I’m tired of keeping broken men every year. Preston Williams may have crashed back to earth, but at least he hasn’t been a broken butterfly for almost 5 years.
They could cut Parker today, and I would be happy about it. It’s been the same story every year with this guy. I’ve been calling him fools gold for a couple of years, and that is just what he is. Looks nice, but not really worth much. I’m tired of Parker’s ‘potential’.
I’m still giving Harris this year to see what he can do. I want to see what a coach that will play him to his strengths gets out of him.
Stills doesn’t lack production, he’s been our most consistent receiver the last few years. He’s not a #1, but he’s a quality deep threat receiver that can score TDs. I was in his corner until he publicly called out the owner who has supported him and his social stances. I couldn’t care less about kneeling, but he lost me with that bullshit.
Jones can get lost too. I would love if we could get something in trade for him, but not sure if that is possible. I can’t stand players who sit on their team, and Jones did just that last year in a fit of pique. It’s a me first attitude that can maybe be forgiven in a guy still looking to get paid, but when you have gotten your big contract, and pull that crap, adios IMO. Add in the injuries and…
I’m still concerned how Wilson comes back from this injury. If he looks like last year’s player, then we definitely keep him, but if he struggles to come back, then he’s a wait and see guy.
Alonso is a playmaker. He’s got limitations, but I think with the right scheme, where his skills can be maximized and his weaknesses covered, he will excel. We have a young crop of good looking LBs though, so he may be gone next year.
I like McDonald, he fits exactly what we want to do with our secondary, but he always seems to be injured, so…

Was never really sold on him. Least as a long-term starter. He came in looking strong and then not so much. Had a feeling the tape showed his weaknesses.
Would make a great back-up though.
Don’t think he’s played enough to really know what his upside is. He’s had both ups and downs which is typical of young corners.
