Miami Dolphins trade LT Laremy Tunsil and WR Kenny Stills to Texans!

OK, this is a shocker, no two ways about it! In addition to trading away our cornerstone LT, we also traded away controversial WR Kenny Stills (BUH-bye) and future draft picks, a 2020 4th RD pick and a 2021 6th RD pick. What do we get in return for all of this??? TWO first RD picks, a 2020 1st RD and a 2021 1st RD pick and 2021 2nd RD pick as well. and two players, special teamer DB Johnson Bademosi and OT Julie’n Davenport.

I don’t even know how to digest all this to be honest. Things look great for the future, although now we have to find a legitimate LT which will probably require a high pick. I realize we have now have 2 first RD picks in both next year’s draft and also in 2021, but now the rebuild seems to be full on, and it’s going to require some patience here. While the future looks promising, I have my doubts about how competitive our team will be with a poor offensive line.

I understand well that no player is “untradeable”. There is a value for everything, and GM Chris Grier felt he got more value than he could turn down for his best OL and really the cornerstone of our offensive line, then he did the right thing. Time will tell, because Laremy Tunsil is a great tackle, he was an excellent pass protector as well as a demon in the run game. Kenny Stills was a deep threat WR who has been making big plays for us since he got here, but in limited quantities. He probably should have been more during his tenure here, and his decision to speak up against Dolphins owner Steve Ross probably led to him being a part of this trade as well..

What I guess we all have to realize is that this year is definitely compromised. I would say we all had some doubts about our O-line with Laremy Tunsil, so those doubts just intensified w/o him. Is Zach Sterup our LT? Do our QB’s routinely get “Julienned” if newly acquired OT Julie’n Davenport is playing LT? Do we pick up another LT off the cut scrap heap? LG Michael Deiter’s job just got a whole lot more difficult, wouldn’t you think?

Next year’s draft should be exciting for us, but watching this season, at least for me at this moment, looks to be a scary prospect. I think we’re putting an inferior product on the field on offense, with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick starting behind what appears to be a very shaky O-line. We heard rumors about a locker room revolt if Laremy Tunsil was traded, I suppose we’ll see if that’s true or not. I hope it’s not, because things may tough enough for this team this season without that.

I posted above the next 5 cuts we made and the 5 guys we snagged off other teams’ cuts.

The Miami Dolphins today announced they have been awarded the following players off waivers: linebacker Trent Harris, linebacker Deon Lacey, defensive end Avery Moss, safety Steven Parker and cornerback Ken Webster. The Dolphins waived the following players: linebacker Terrill Hanks, safety Montre Hartage, tight end Chris Myarick, tackle Zach Sterup and defensive tackle Adolphus Washington.

When a team is starting over and purging their roster I guess the new word to use is tanking when it’s really about starting over but whatever. Seems there always has to be a negative slant about everything these days.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Darn sure that Flores and the team will try to win every game, but also thinking Greir is not all that worried about how many wins we get this year. I think they might surprise some though…. but then at this point that would mean 6 wins.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah of course we’re going to try and compete to win. I think Grier and Flores are in this together. Flores took the job knowing the direction the team is going in. Build it the way you want it to look.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And it is pretty cool for Flores. Not only does he get to create the team the way he wants….. he’s getting another year in job security.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah everyone gets a pass on W/L in 2019. Everything we’re doing is geared up for a big 2020 offseason. We have the resources to put together a team that can contend in 2020 if we get it at least mostly right. It doesn’t take 3-4 years like in the past.

Flores gets to change the culture in his vision and in 2020 there will be a core that can set the example for the newbees moving forward. They’re doing exactly what they said they were going to do. The past teams got stagnant and could never get to the next level so trying to stick with it and build on it didn’t make much sense. It’s painful for us fans knowing we’re not going to be contenders this year but the future has a chance to be bright. Ross signed off taking a step back to rebuild for long term success. It had to happen.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mando, stop being an ass about Flores not using the tanking narrative. You’re acting like an amateur. Purging a roster and starting over is just that. It’s you in the media who use the tank word over and over which is childish.

  16. While it appears like the Dolphins are, in fact, making the conscious decision to be a less talented team now in hopes of being a team that’s in contention later on, first-year head coach Brian Flores dismissed the idea of the team tanking.

“This game means a lot to me,” Flores told reporters during a conference call on Sunday, via the Miami Herald. “I wouldn’t disrespect the game with that. Again, no, we’re not. We’re going to try to win every game. I think that’s disrespectful to even to say that. …. It’s disheartening to hear people talk about it, to even say that. For a guy who respects the game as much as the game has done for me, when people say that, it’s extremely sad.”

While it may be disheartening to hear, there’s no denying that this is the reality for the Dolphins. Sure, players will still play hard to better themselves for 2020 and Flores will coach to the best of his ability, but, from a talent standpoint, they are in position to lose rather than win.
    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/brian-flores-addresses-speculation-that-the-miami-dolphins-are-tanking-in-2019/

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Never heard tanking used when Jimmy Johnson did the same thing in 1996 and that team went 8-8 although they still had Marino. This team is being rebuilt. Tanking is a stupid narrative.

What if we win 4, 5 or 6 games this year? What did we tank for, the #3 to #11 pick?

  17. we dont have to call this tanking for tua, but its definitely not looking like Miami wants to win this year by having quality talent

they want to win with fitzpatrick at qb, and many of our vets missing, well hell i want to win too, but wanting to win doesnt translate to wins

this team was set up to lose in 2019, so it has a brighter future. maybe tanking is the right word, maybe it isnt, but the design is go cheap, let the talent go, and stockpile picks for the future

the emphasis is, we hope the UDFA and rejects from other teams wins games this year, see? we arent tanking, these unknowns really want to win

its a fine line between tanking and a snow job about tanking, this team is doing both, and are viewing 2019 as a sacrificial year to get what they want in 2020 and 2021

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tanking is when you deliberately try to lose like not playing your best players or starting a QB who had no business being in the league like the Colts did when they sucked for Luck. That’s what started this whole tank narrative.

      • there are different ways to tank, like sending a couple of your best offensive players to the texans a few days before game one for draft picks

that was NOT done to help us beat the Ravens , or ANY games this year
this was done intentionally, sacrifice the season for future seasons

and starting FItz? nobody starts Fitz if they really wanted to win Sunday, Rosen gives us the best chance to win

the team is making moves that dont intentionally make us lose, but will greatly contribute to losses

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, your “Gonna be able to rebuild the team like it is FF.” reminded me of my FFL this year where two teams only protected 2 out of the 4 and made trades with two teams that wanted to keep 6 so they could rebuild their teams and start over. The price for the teams that wanted to keep 6 was a 1, 2 and 4.

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

David, you knew what the plan was going into this season. We weren’t ready to pay Tunsil a new big LT contract during this rebuild which was coming and I don’t consider Stills a big loss. He’s a nice speedy receiver but he was by no means a must have, and his political advocacy was not a distraction Flores and the org wanted to deal with anymore.

Flores’ mantra is team first, selflessness, show up on time, work hard and do your job. Do the Patriots ever have rabble-rousers?

    • i did NOT know the plan going into this season was to trade Tunsil and Stills

      • my point is these moves do NOT help us beat the Ravens or anyone this year, everything is being done for next year

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No not every move but the plan overall was about rebuilding this team in Grier’s and Flores’ vision moving forward. A lot goes into it other than just saying we got rid of good players.

We went 6-10 and 7-9 the last two years with both of them. Don’t you want that crap to end? Not they were solely responsible but did they put us over the top? No!

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I find it interesting that we have 5 tailbacks on the team. Not sure what we’re doing there unless STs is key with some of these guys like Laird, Gaskin and Walton. The new kickoff rules have changed how teams use personnel with no more wedge etc.

Wondering if another trade is in the hopper?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A lot of us thought this is how it would start. No big deal but at some point Rosen has to get a good look starting. Unless we’re in a playoff hunt with Fitz and we’re not as bad as people expected. Other than that, once we’ve got 5 or 6 games under our belt and we have a losing record, it’s time to take a look at Rosen.

  21. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I don’t think these moves worsen us as a team a lot this year ..

Kiko was deemed replaceable when Equawhatever and Baker played lights out in preseason .. new regime wants/needs our LB to be comfortable in coverage .. I LOVED Kiko with the exception of his PF penalty’s, even though most of those were hustle based .. in short he was not gonna be a full time player and don’t play ST ..his replacements all contribute on STs

I am not an OL guru or watcher like some here, I am more of a ball watcher as Stanger says .. my memory tells me that Tunsil was better at pass pro, than run blocking , like piggy stared earlier.. so based on the players we kept, and what I saw in PS , we are looking at a more power run than sit back and throw downfield team .. the three OL we traded for , may be stronger run blocking OL than Tunsil.. they also may not be , but in this type offence an Elite LT earning 10-15 M/ yr as Tunsil would command coming next year is not as bad a need… so Texans throwing the next two drafts and a replacement at his position at us for a player who may be overqualified for our needs and really expensive resign is not that bad.. take it and (pardon the pun) run..

Stills I liked as well but paying 9 Mil for him and what he does was also overpay in my eyes, especially when we have Grant and Wilson who have as much if not more speed than he does.. and yes Stills talked himself out town earlier was just a matter of when..
With the run heavy team we have and the Two TE’s we will dispatch most plays we have more than enough WRs for what we do , 2-3 shirt speedy guys, and 2-3 tall large go get jump ball types , as Naples says as long as “the guy who sometimes shows up can’t play due to dandruff “ << found that hilarious

I DO agree that yes game 1 vs Ravens is gonna be tough getting 5 OL playing as a cohesive unit by then, but as stated Tunsil barely saw the field in PS , we did have Sterup in there and he is now also gone …

So to recap week one will be tougher now, but going forward we are not set as far back by theses dealings as has been hollered.. and as somebody else stated “ the sky is not falling, it’s the neighbors kids throwing acorns over the fence “. << loved that as well on a couple of levels

Stay the Course !! Go Phins. We will win more games this year than last year on effort and execution alone 🤜🏻🤛🏻

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good post! We weren’t a good team the last two years and we moved on from the old guard we tried to contend with. We’re starting over and rebuilding from the ground up. Look at the position groups, lots of new players in each of them. We only have two OL left from last year in Kilgore and Davis. That doesn’t mean the OL will be good, but it won’t be the same. And Kilgore only played 4 games last year until he went down in that 4th game against the Pats for the season.

This season will be about who will be part of the team next year and moving forward. It’s the initial foundation evaluation in phase one.

All the blow it up guys are struggling with what that means. Blow it up!!!! But not him, him, him, him, him, him etc. LOL

I think most of us knew Kiko was a goner as soon as we heard the reports that he’d cleaned out his locker the other day, so no shocker here. However, I’m dismayed that we only got a Vince Biegel in return for him… I kind of feel like we got hosed on this one.

    Consider the following…

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Just heard we are also paying 1M of his salary this year as well .. I think of it as Baker replaces him , EQ is replacing Baker, and Biegle is a ST Dog !!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It is what it is, but I think we could’ve gotten more in exchange for Kiko. I suppose Chris Grier really liked Biegel in the ’17 Draft (R4- 108 overall pick).

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

We as fans always think we can /should get more than we do for expendable players .. see Ajayi .. and I loved him too , we had him on a pedestal and were pissed when all we got was a 5th for our star RB .. true HE did get a Ring, but he is also currently unemployed .. Kiko is a great player , but needs to be in the right role on the right team.. we at least got something for him as opposed to cutting him and eating 7M I think in dead money .. causes Yes he was leaving one way or another, and everyone in league knew it

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It was a salary and old guard dump. We take a look at a young LB prospect and go from there.

I’m happy that Alonso has a chance to play for a contender. He’s a good guy and deserves that. He would be wasting his time in Miami this year. He would have been gone next year anyway.

  23. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We haven’t had a chance to see LB Van Ginkel yet as he’s been nursing an injury in TC and the PS but the team sees enough in him as a 5th rd pick to be patient with him. It’s easy to say we’re going to suck but we really have no idea yet. There is talent on this team albeit not a proven or complete team. Just remember not every team in the NFL is good. LOL

No need to be sorry, Manitoba. It’s weird though… seems as though so many forget that we have Raekwon on our team, and he finished last season VERY strong! He’s somebody to look forward to… along with Baker (his former teammate at Ohio State)! 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah as Omar said McMillan is not a good fit when he wasn’t even practicing and playing due to injuries. McMillan can play in a 3-4 or 4-3. Why would we give up on him at this stage unless something isn’t right with him?

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jerome Baker sure seems primed to have a big season. He’s our 3-down LB – he can play base blitz/run/cover and play nickel as a blitz/run/cover, lol. He’s got some special in him. I think we found a gem here. 🙂

‘Captain Obvious’ statement: we’re not even CLOSE to being done in churning the bottom part of our roster. And yes… we’re looking to trade one of our current 5 RBs (plus one FB for a total of 6 backs).

Drake’s numbers are going to absolutely SUCK this year behind this O-Line: it would make sense to trade him while he still has value. I really don’t want to trade Drake, but I could see him being the next — and perhaps the last — vet we might trade to get another pick(s). He’s a cool $2.2M this year with much upside, before becoming a FA next year.

I look to see him traded to a contending team who loses a stud RB before the trade deadline, sadly. I hope I’m wrong, because I think Drake has been a stud for us… but he’s going to look horrible this year behind our O-Line. JMO

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, Baker, Raekwon and Eguavoen as you mentioned, we will see a lot along with the hybrid edge guys in these different formations we’ve seen. Remember when we said we’ll probably be vanilla in the first PS game, nope… we ran a lot of different stuff because that’s what we do.

I happen to love what I refer to as the 8-2-1 – 8 man LOS front, of course some will drop back or play press, blitz or whatever, but it’s a challenging formation, 2 LBs within 5 yards and a deep safety (McCain) like 15-20 yards deep.

  29. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Kiko was a salary dump and we are fortunate to get anything for him. It’s not just fans and overpaid writers who knew Kiko wasn’t in our future. Looking at the Texans, I’m glad we have a GM. They’ve ruined a lot of hard work and the future in some poorly worked trades. Like Piggy, I’m not extremely impressed with O’Brien in any of his stops including this stint.

We really did well by Tunsil and screwed over an AFC competitor at the same time. Tunsil knows they gave up two 1sts for him. When it’s contract time, he’ll be the highest paid LT in the league…and the Texans will have fewer resources with which to compete. I’m extremely happy we will not be dealing with that contract. I just hope Grier is half the drafter he thinks he is.

I really like Rosen and think he got a raw. . deal. Hopefully, it will push him to be the best QB he can be and the answer here. If not, Grier set us up with lots of options for next year. That’s always a good thing. At least college games will be competitive lol and there’s a lot of QBs looking good early…which means jack shit honestly. I’m a huge Fromm fan but he has to get over the hump and probably isn’t the most talented guy out there this year. Oregon screwed up bad and it will cost them.

It seems to me that Flores believes if you play solid defense and STs, you can stay in games. Playmakers on offense make the difference. He’s trying to build DEF/ST first. The types of players he needs to play their multiple on defense. We have skill on offense, but it might take a few games for all the new to build some chemistry.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Agreed… but of course, Defense (and STs) are the specialty of Coach. I happen to believe that our Defense is going to ‘WOW/SURPRISE’ a lot of people this year, and our STs are going to be pretty good (despite the loss of fan favorite Darren Rizzi).

The dumb kids don’t graduate high school.
The less dumb kids can’t get in any 4-yr university.
The marginal kids go to satellite schools such as Bethune or Berry.
And so on up the tiers till you get to Stanford and that top level.
FSU is a major university from which a successful grad can get a great job.
As a state uni, it must serve the state by allowing 40,000 students in at a time
and offer a wide range of degrees, some more challenging than others.

I believe you can get a good education almost anywhere if you apply yourself.

        Where did you graduate from?

      • duke isnt in FL, so i wasnt talking about them,

i was mainly reacting to the FSU football score, ticked Parker is still freeloading on our team, and discussing FL universities only

, its too cumbersome and argumentative to start it all over and finish it at this point IMO

  53. Team commitment has to start with the team owner

When Ross showed he had other things on his mind , like. Making money holding a fund raiser for an idiot who never claims he never heard of a cat 5,
that was a clear sign Ross is not concerned about the team this year

Maybe the grab the Farnsworth kid back up. Something definitely changed in their mindset. Maybe after the Tunsil trade they went all in on get purge. Maybe be those are the revolt guys…… I dunno but that move seems very abrupt

    • i told the truth, , Ross has not shown he wants to win in 2019, if you disagree, instead of attacking me over it, come up with some proof Ross is showing commitment to win in 2019

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ross made it clear he’s willing to see the team take a step back to build it for long term success. The previous way we were operating wasn’t working was it? You just don’t want to accept it. It’s as simple as that. Stop playing victim with the attack shit. You say a lot of crazy shit like the FSU nonsense. You insult people all the time but you don’t realize you’re doing it, or maybe you do but just don’t care.

      • im not a victim, i pointed out that you can only attack me with some bullshit like Ross is trying to win this year, and yet you have nothing to show for it. You are wrong, and im right.

you keep saying Ross is doing this for the future, and i agree, but You are wrong to attack me for saying Ross hasnt shown he has commitment to win in 2019
and you cannot come up with anything to prove he has. You have nothing

There could be several reasons why Denny should’ve been cut, but the timing is really strange.
He is really old and might’ve shown signs, but I did see him make a ST trackle in preseason.
He was not at LS for the terrible snap that caused the missed XP.
One of the writers said he had his worst game against the patsies last yr.
    but i don’t remember that.
He could have been a critic of some of these recent fire sale moves, but he seems too much of a survivor for that.
He might’ve been a supporter of Stills, but we’d have heard more of that before now.
He might’ve been too jovial or laid back for Flo, but that makes little sense really.
He probably makes a lot of money for a LS, but it can’t be a lot in the big picture.

I actually think the NFL will see more of this soon. Allocating a roster spot to a LS is a huge commitment of resources. Can’t your center or your back-up center or a LB or TE long-snap and save a roster spot? Somebody who can tackle on STs. They don’t need to block that much with the new rule.

I also think we might see more kickers who both punt and place-kick soon. That would save yet another roster spot.

These two spots would be game-day actives also.

  65. D's avatar D says:

I agree the Denney cut wasn’t to be expected but it’s timing is wierd.

Has anyone seen a reason why he was cut?
and why at the end of pre-season?
We only have a few days to train a new guy and
that might impact our FG kicker and lose a game for us.

Wait … is that part of the tanking?

  67. its funny to discuss personal experiences, everyone else wants to say, nuh huuu, You never saw that, lol

ill just wait til they relate personal experiences, and tell them they didnt see that either

The two major state schools are kinda split in their disciplines. UF is more technical and science and FSU is more law and business. Not that both don’t have good programs in other areas but these are the ones they are known for. Neither is a bad school and neither are full of idiots. Ok ok that’s as far as I can get to a defense I have vomit rising in the back of my throat.

Some kids don’t want to go to Mouse u and study puppeteering and concessions science like UCF.

Talk about dumb students, my school Clemson and USC got into a rivalry about which one could have the largest naked coed parade. It was during the streaker fad. We would organize our girls and invite the Carolina guys up to count, and then they would convince their girls to get a bigger turnout and invited us to come down and count theirs. Just to validate and all, y’know?

This went back and forth for several months until finally the cops said it was disrupting traffic too much. Both schools had parades in the thousands of nude college girls walking the mile or two loops around the campuses.

I forget which group of girls thought they won. Both the male student bodies knew who won.

  82. Stanger, do You still believe ross is paying every penny he is allowed for talent? cause to alot of folks see him being cheap as hell, to the point of tanking the season

even john denny ? when has denny been a cap problem?

these moves were made so Ross could be the cheapest owner in football, with the lowest payroll

Ross already had lowest payroll before the TUnsil, Stills, Alonso, and Denny moves

    • Ross has put Flores into a shit sandwich situation

Flores doesnt want to tank, yet he has to go along with what his boss wants, and cover for his BS

Flores has had to cover for Ross before, when he played shitty jayz music to offend stills because Ross was mad at stills

now Flores has to convince everyone that fitz won, we arent tanking, etc

i think one day FLores will tell Ross to shove it, not covering for his lies anymore
maybe then Ross will just sell the team to someone that wants to win

I need in on this trend lol

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not panicking at all. I just thought we would try to be more competitive this season. Now it’s going to be more difficult. I was never concerned about what PFF thought of players, I think Tunsil was a very good LT, maybe top 10 in the NFL. Also keep in mind that we did give the Texans 2 players and some draft capital back in order to get the two 1st RD picks and the 2nd in 2021. We have them a 2020 4th and a 2021 6th. Not bad, but it wasn’t just Tunsil in exchange for those picks.

I don’t think that means we’re tanking this year, but I also don’t expect us to be very good. Honestly, my excitement level of watching us play right now is hovering under 50%, It could be ugly. We’re definitely stripped down now and ready to rebuild though, and watching that process play out the next couple of years will be more fun than watching the games IMO. Looking forward to the 2020 NFL Draft big time!

We have TWO 1st RD picks, TWO 2nd RD picks, TWO 3rd RD Picks, ONE 4th RD pick, TWO 5th RD picks, TWO 6th RD picks and TWO 7th RD picks. 13 total picks, including 6 in the first 3 rounds. That makes rebuilding a lot easier.

    LOVE THESE NEW ROSTER MOVES.
Get ready for the “Perfect Season in Reverse?”
    I hope NOT.
HOWEVER, if a horrible season hastens Ross’s decision to sell the team, then maybe it’s worth one rotten season. This franchises’ biggest need is an owner who has the savvy to pick THE RIGHT PEOPLE to lead our favorite team back into the playoffs.
And that is something Steve Ross is NOT capable of.

I know he is a limited player, just a 6th rounder,
but he does block FG attempts and he gives %100.

    • normally that wouldnt be considered a money cut, but from the moves i see, with only a few exceptions

anything more than NFL minimum wage guys are gone or going

this Dolphins payroll is one of the lowest the NFL has seen in several years, if not the lowest

Ross is extremely cheap, and doesnt care if the team suffers or not. its just a real estate investment to him, and when he sells, he will get returns on his investment

  93. D's avatar D says:

Taylor is a bottom churn he had some potential for sure but he is still a bottom of the roster guy and they must have someone else they like better out there
