2019 Season Game 1 – Miami Dolphins vs Baltimore Ravens

The 2019 season for the Miami Dolphins is about to start for real this coming Sunday at 1PM. Both teams have had some radical makeovers, neither team is particularly recognizable from the teams that played last season. Both long time starting QB’s are playing for other AFC teams, Ryan Tannehill for Tennessee and Joe Flacco for Denver. Also gone from the Ravens are Terrell Suggs, C.J. Mosely, Eric Weddle and Michael Crabtree. Gone from the Dolphins are Laremy Tunsil, Cam Wake, Kiko Alonso and Kenny Stills.

The Dolphins have officially made the change to a 3-4 base defense. After jettisoning most recently DE Tank Carradine, newly acquired DT John Jenkins will line up at LDE, Davon Godchaux at NT and rookie Christian Wilkins at RDE. Sam Eguavoen at LOLB, Raekwon McMillan at LILB and Jerome Baker at RILB with and Charles Harris at ROLB. Xavien Howard and Eric Rowe are the starting CB’s with the safeties being Reshad Jones and Bobby McCain. That different enough for ya?!?!

On offense, recently traded for LT Julie’n Davenport makes his first start as a Miami Dolphin. Next to him at LG is rookie Michael Deiter. Veteran Daniel Kilgore starts at C with rookie Shaq Calhoun starting at RG. Jesse Davis will be the starter at RT. WR’s DeVante Parker and Jakeem Grant will be on the outside with Albert Wilson in the slot. Mike Gesicki will be the starting TE. Kenyan Drake will be the starting RB along with Kalen Ballage as the backup but I expect both backs to get to a similar workload. Mark Walton, Patrick Laird and Myles Gaskin will also get a sprinkle of touches, but more than likely we’ll only put 4 backs on the game day roster and that will include FB Chandler Cox.

It will be interesting to see how this young OL fares against the Ravens D. I’m not expecting a lot, it could be ugly at times.I’m not especially interested in watching QB Ryan Fitzpatric play, although hopefully Fitzmagic shows up on Sunday. Can DeVante Parker have a strong start? Probably not as I expect a strong dose of the run game. I don’t know if either Drake or Ballage will find much room but I expect close to 30 carries or more for us.

On defense I’m curious to see how all the parts work in the 3-4 base. Odd that Jenkins isn’t at the nose and Godchaux at DE. Hopefully we can generate some pass rush with some well disguised blitzes and keep the Ravens guessing as to where the rush is coming from. Harbaugh is an excellent coach and the Ravens a very disciplined team. We’ve seen the Ravens shred us for years, maybe the guys on the field for us will do better as most of them weren’t a part of that.

In summation, I just want us to look prepared, and I want us to be aggressive on defense. I expect a conservative game plan on offense to keep us in this game. Coach Flo won’t be caught sitting at the end of the bench by himself drawing up plays on his tablet during the game. I expect a low scoring affair, not too unlike what we saw last night from Chicago and Green Bay.

I actually hate the Ravens and Steelers more than the Jets or any other division rival. So anytime we have a chance to win one of these games I relish it. Usually kosher dill, but I’m not opposed to sweet. The Ravens have been beatable for years so losing to them makes it sting that much worse.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Piggy hate meter

      1 patriots
      2 jests
      3 bills
      4 ravens
      5 raiders
6 colts (no good reason. I just don’t like that horseshoe)

They are my number 1 non divisional rival

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I think it has more to do with the fandom associated with the team. Lol. I dont want to see bad people happy and you tend to meet more dislikeable fans from those teams. I only disliked the Colts because of Peyton Manning. Once he left I was cool with them again.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I forgot to add the cowboys to my list
Yes – It’s usually the fans and there is no better indication of that than cowboys blowhards

But there’s a marked distinction between division rivals and those teams for me

I only regret that I can’t move the Bills above 3…lol

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – I’m almost with you on the Ravens hatred. For me it’s Patriots, Ravens, Jets and Bills. I don’t hate the Steelers

  10. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

When we were 0-6 vs the Texans, they were high on my hate list

But that Tunsil trade was a heck of an olive branch

I also hate the Browns and I generally don’t like Cleveland teams – but that hate is directly attributable to their reaction to the Heat when we signed Lebron James, before that I barely noticed Cleveland

  11. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Include me on the loathing the Ravens train. My most despised list reads: Jest in the top spot, then the Pets, then the Ravens.

  12. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Yeah, losing 6 straight to an expansion team is a special kind of pain.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I can’t hate the Jets too much, my dad was a Jets fan and he was so cool to me taking me to a Dolphins playoff game. Somehow the other Jets fans manage to make me hate them enough to be 3rd on my list anyway.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Jests fans reached peak annoying in the Marc Sanchez years

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have some friends who have been ripping on me about how bad we’re gonna be. I have other friends that don’t rip and stay pretty neutral. I never rip on my friend’s teams. At least I don’t think I do

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I just tell people we are going 16-0 and pretend I know something they don’t

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

How is it that the league rotates which division plays which division every year, but somehow it always seems we wind up playing the Ravens at some point in the season?

We didn’t play them last season, but we did play them ’13, 14, ’15, ’16, ’17 and now ’19

We should only rotate with the AFC north every 3 years right?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

it’s about divisional standing as well. If we finish 3rd in the division we play all the 3rd place finishers from the other AFC divisions

  15. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

For me, hating the Jest is all about the fans. By all rights, the Pets should be first on my list, but every Jest fan I have ever met has been a complete and utter tool. I actually know some decent Pets fans, and a number of cool Jills fans.

  16. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Mike,

I hear ya about not ripping on your friends teams. I don’t rip on any of the other teams except for the Jest, Pets, Jills, Ravens, Texans, Raiders, Cowboys, Browns, Colts, and sometimes the Niners. Throw in whatever team we’re playing that week, and sometimes the Jags, the Saints, and the Falcons, not to mention the Seahawks. Other than them, I stay pretty neutral and try to say only nice things.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh I forgot the Steelers, the Bears, and the Redskins. Plus I can’t stand Philly or the Panthers. The Rams piss me off too, and I don’t think anyone likes the Titans.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

You may as well hate the nfl…

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Why? Should I feel warm and snugly for all those teams that are trying to beat the Fins?

Shouldn’t I want to crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentations of their women?

  17. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Are there any teams other than the 🐬 that anyone likes?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’ll always be friends with the Giants.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yeah the Giants seem to be most likely to be bestowed “friends of the Dolphins”

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

17-14 is indelibly etched in my mind. Not only did the Giants stop the perfect Pets season in the same season we went 1-15, but the half time score of that Super Bowl also won me about 100 bucks in out Super Bowl party pool (still the only time I’ve won any money in the damn thing).

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It also had the single greatest play in Super Bowl history.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Actually I can’t stand Cam Newton, don’t hate the Panthers though. It’s Sonny’s fault, he adores him so. Makes me hate him (Cam) even more than I should. lol

Giants are my 2nd favorite team, I live here, they’re not in my conference, and they knocked off the Pats from being an undefeated team.

I posted about the apostrophe in Devenport’s name earlier this week. I feel foolish about it not because it is not an apostrophe, it is an l’accent aigu with the accent on the e. Julién Davenport

That being said, I still rail against black mothers who want to “fancify” their kids names by putting freakin apostrophes in the middle of their names or replacing freekin letters with them like J’Marcus.

Not so sure about that . . .

I am sure 100%. I have an l’accent aigu in my name. Like Café

It It doesn’t show up on the American Keyboard so folks who don’t know the hot key use an apostrophe like Cafe’

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

2 sites I showed you have it as an apostrophe. miamidolphins.com shows it as an accent. How do you know which one is right?

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

because I know the difficulty of getting the é to show up correctly on the key board and I see my name all the time either with it omitted or with a wonky apostrophe in it to replace the l’accent aigu

      • D's avatar D says:

Most likely an accent. I’d trust the dolphins page to have it right. Is it directly over the letter? Accent tell you how to pronounce the vowel and usually is over a vowel. An apostrophe would mean to pause in your pronunciation and most of the time follows a consonant

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Yeah, Like D said. Plus why would you pause (how would you pause) after the E before the N?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I feel the same way, but how would you feel, if the cheats picked him up.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We don’t know if that would happen, and 31 other teams would have first crack before the Patriots. Honestly, I don’t even care if he goes there. makes no difference to me, we aren’t going anywhere this season.

  43. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think whoever is the Raiders equivalent of Aponte determined that they are on the hook for the guaranteed money. Completely different world at that point.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Gruden wants to win. He’ll deal with the malcontent if they guy scores a couple of TD’s and helps to win a division game opening day.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Nothing suggests that. All reports (including below) still say they they could have cut him and voided the guaranteed money, but there is a reason they signed him in the first place. He apologized and made all the appropriate noises, likely precipitated by finding out his money was on the hook, which is what the Raiders wanted, and they are trying to move forward.

      https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/antonio-brown-reportedly-gives-an-emotional-apology-to-teammates-at-raiders-facility/

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well I suggested it. 🙂 And have no idea how such works but thought guaranteed was just that, even if yes we talked about this contract being different. If I was Gruden or Maycock would have done it. if could just walk away.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Lol, let me rephrase then. There is nothing credible suggesting it. 😉

You don’t have to know how it works. The language of the contract has literally been put out there by multiple outlets, lol. And neither camp has refuted it.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And guaranteed money isn’t always guaranteed. Do you think Aaron Hernandez got paid all his guaranteed money. Extreme example, but yeah, these contracts have clauses that can cost players ‘guaranteed’ money.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Kong — I’m guessing that if they didn’t pony up the money on Sunday there was at least a chance that low-life lawyers like Ken and Pig would be involved. Hate the shysters. 🙂

But that just my way of saying might not be as clear as made out in the press, especially as to conduct that triggers whatever escape clause.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think these contracts are pretty ironclad, but ya never know 🙂

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good write Mike! I read Van Ginkel can come back midseason.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t get too hung up on the 3-4 base because we probably won’t see the traditional very often.

  46. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just got the Fest tIckets. And they are hard copy. They are tiny, like half the size of the old ones but a bit more square. Also not bland like in the years before when had to push for actual ticket tickets. Has a low key Hard Rock image on them.

  47. Dolphins are in a lot of mocks as picking Tua in the first selection overall in 2020

I have checked Tua out. Off the field , he seem like he is a good kid, has his head and heart in the right place and he works extremely hard in practice
On the field, he is extremely efficient, very few turnovers, and can scramble like few others
He has a powerful accurate arm, leads the receivers , can make all the throws

I would be very happy if Miami drafted Tua. With the pass happy rules in the NFL, a guy like Tua could dominate similar to how Mahomes is doing

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

How often do you think mocks in early September nailed the first overall pick which occurs in late April

There’s an nfl and a college season left to be played

  48. Antonio brown has obviously suffered too many blows to the head.

He used a racial slur against his white GM, and gets away with it? Wtf?

It’s Incredible the raiders put up with that, SMH. Brown has more drama than the average drama club

This makes the Stills situation seem extremely mild

And, Shula couldn’t give him a defense. Fucked up. Nor, joe robbie. Losers. That’s just for OD. sorry bud.

  50. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I don’t think Tua’s the one today. He needs to play against better competition. He has talent all around that makes HIM better.
