Dolphins play best game of season – Fall to Bills 31-21

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick played his best game of the season for the Dolphins. It wasn’t enough however due partly to his own huge mistake, a terrible INT at a point of the game where the Dolphins had the ball for about 10 minutes on a long drive to start the 3rd QTR and Fitzpatrick threw a crucial interception at the BUF 12 yard line. The Dolphins had an opportunity at a minimum to go up 17-9 with a FG, but the Dolphins wanted the TD, much like the decision to try for the 2 PT conversion last week. Good idea, poor execution.

It’s clear that Mark Walton has now emerged as the lead back as Kenyan Drake is expected to be traded before the deadline. That would leave the Dolphins with Walton, Ballage, Gaskin, Laird and Cox. I wouldn’t expect a big return for Drake, probably a 5th or 6th at best. DeVante Parker had a nice game, one of his best contributions in some time, and it wasn’t even really that good. Parker finished with 5 catches for 55 yards and 1 TD. Gesicki is really heating up making tough catches almost routinely now. Gesicki added 4 catches for 41 yards, a couple of them in serious traffic with a high degree of difficulty. Also very encouraging is WR Preston Williams who continues to grow before our eyes. Is he not doing what we hoped DeVante Parker could be? Williams finished with 6 catches for 82 yards leading the team in both categories.

The Dolphins won the T.O.P. battle in this game but still ended up on the short side on the scoreboard. As per usghe, we need to score more TD’s. We have had a devil of a time getting into the end zone, which is odd considering we have a fairly strong runner in Walton, 2 WR with good size (P. Williams 6’5″ and D. Parker 6’3″) and a TE with a huge catch radius and great vertical capabilities in Mike Gesicki. Hopefully we will figure out a way to use all of them.

The Dolphins managed to get 2 sacks yesterday and to no one’s surprise, it was newcomers, LB Vince Biegel got his 2nd and Taco Charlton added his team leading 3rd sack. Once again, Charles Harris remains sackless and once again you can read that as you like. It’s amazing we don’t get torched with the guys we have been playing in our secondary. Ken Webster, Ryan Lewis, Jomal Wiltz. Bobby McCain and Eric Rowe started at S yesterday. I mean who are some of these guys?

It’s impossible not to respect for Brian Flores. He’s doing this with smoke and mirrors. I know we haven’t won yet but it’s hard to expect him to win with the roster we’re throwing out there week after week. The Bills are a legit contender in the AFC for at a minimum a WC berth, but their defense is one of the better units in the NFL and we handled them in this game. The score doesn’t show it but the T.O.P. does. If not for that ill timed INT late in the 3rd QTR we had a shot to win this game. I think that was the turning point right there. Last week we took the game to the very end although we played so poorly in that game. This week we played head to head with the Bills but came up short. We’re heading in the right direction, and have to take comfort in that. At 0-6, it’s all we got.

GO DOLPHINS!!

Get a QB, get strong in the trenches (both sides) and then add talent at the skill positions. Fix the trenches first. A 1st or 2nd RD WR can’t help us if the QB is on his back or the RB has no room to run.

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Now THAT’S a page turn worthy post, even if I have to say it myself!

  3. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I think secondary is as important as ever in the NFL. …So I’ll add to that Mike, get a QB, get strong in the trenches (both sides), get strong in the secondary, and then add talent at the skill positions.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t draft a RB or WR at all, but the first couple rounds should be focused on QB, OL, DL(pass rusher included), and secondary. It can’t all be done in 1 off season, but building a foundation to start is important.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yessir. We need a CB opposite X, we need a good young S, but I’d rather take QB/OL/DL ahead of either of the other two

      • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

We obviously have FA too. I figure they will try and sign a couple OL in FA and draft maybe 1 or 2 in the first 3 rounds, then 1 pick for QB, and then we’ll have 3 or 4 picks which I think should be on the defensive side. I’m thinking DL and secondary, but we’ll see. We have a long way to go until the draft.

I agree 100% with you MikeE and Rich. WR’s were brought up and that is why I was bringing up WR’s I like who will be there round 3 or later. (Jefferson may go in 2nd though)

I would love our draft to be:
    DE Chase Young
    QB Joe Burrow
    OT Little
    CB CJ Henderson
    C Badazzz
    DT
    BPA
    BPA
    Etc.
    Or something close to that.

I’m not on the DB 🚌 with you guys
It’s a position (along with TE) I’m not so focused on in terms of the first 3 rounds

I think improving our pass rush is going to make the back end of the defense look much better

I also really hope we focus our FA on OL

    We need 3-4 good OL
And I can’t imagine starting more than 2 rookies on the OL in 2020, especially if we invested a top pick at QB

Piggy, TBH, I like Eason more then Herbert. Eason has a strong arm and quick release like Burrow. Herbert cracks to much under pressure IMO. Ranking QB’s for me right now would be:
Burrow, Tua, Eason, Fromm, Herbert, Hurts, Ehlinger, Love, ….. (Ehlinger probably stays though)
    It’s a decent QB class.

MF-13: DID YOU SEE my boy Pat Elflein in The Viking’s game on TV Thursday Night?? I touted him highly 3 years ago when Miami was in great need of an offensive lineman. One of his greatest assets was, and IS, a PROVEN ABILITY to play at an all-star level both at Guard and at Center in the Big 10…
    —————–
I didn’t seem him on Thursday night, but man, Elflein looked GREAT in his rookie season with Minny: he was absolutely another HR hit in the making for Rick Spielman. Unfortunately, he’d sustained a fractured ankle and a major shoulder injury late in his rookie season… and both were severe enough that they required surgery to repair.

His shoulder took longer than his ankle to heal, and it lingered throughout his ’18 campaign. Early in the season, he could barely even hike the ball to Kirk Cousins, so he missed the first two games.

These injuries — what with their severity — can obviously be absolutely devastating to an O-Lineman’s career, but he’s putting in the work and battling through. I hope Elflein gets back to the level he was playing at in ’17: if so, I think he can be a perennial Pro-Bowler. ROOT FOR HIM!

Take away the injuries (nobody had a crystal ball, and maybe they don’t happen in a different time/place/team etc), and he was absolutely a pick we should have made… kid has already shown he has/had the talent at the pro level, so he certainly wasn’t a “bust” pick.

Mr. Campbell, speaking of injuries, surgeries, and the like… I’m thinking about your Mrs., and wishing her a speedy recovery, sir. Be well, both of you!

Theory (not my own): if either Kenyan Drake or DeVante Parker are made inactive for Monday Night Football, they are likely going to be traded before the Tuesday, 4 PM EST, deadline. Something to look for as kickoff approaches against the Stealers*.

  25. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

So LSU has beaten 3 top 10 ranked teams (when they played) so far this season. Alabama has yet to even play a ranked team through 8 games as of tonight. I’m sure Alabama will win. I bet Alabama will still be #1 on Monday.

  26. Kenneth Mastroni's avatar Kenneth Mastroni says:

I was not blown away with Burrow today

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Actually, I think today showed a lot. Today’s game felt like the type of games you see in the nfl. He showed a lot of toughness being sacked 4 times early and still kept getting up. He had a lot of contested passes and still completed 76%. Showed good pocket movement and was still looking to make plays down field. Auburn has 3 DL that are going to go pretty high in the draft, so this is as good of competition he’ll see till he gets to the nfl. Was he perfect? No, but I think he showed that he has a lot of promise at the next level with his accuracy, toughness, and smarts. Plus he basically is running the Saints offense already.

    —————-
I think if we can get an outstanding return on DeVante, we’ve no choice but to trade him. Otherwise, I really have no problem in keeping him long-term… if his price is reasonable, of course… and I think it will be. I mean, he doesn’t have the stats nor consistency to command anything other than ‘reasonable’ $$$ (tier-2 FA WR, truthfully speaking).

But when he flashes, MAN… he FLASHES!!! He’s a great fit in our spread-the-ball Offense, which does not require him to be a WR1. But of course, he’s got the size, speed, hops, and catch-radius of a prototypical WR1 (minus consistency)… which is always a major plus in ANY Offense utilized, particularly in red-zone sits.

T’will be interesting to see what happens, Manitoba. There are many benefits to retaining DeVante… and that includes your FFB team! 🙂

    ———————————-

It’s already started with trait comparisons… He does seem to have some similar traits to a guy that came out of Michigan. I’m not saying he’s the next Brady, but it hard not to see it when he’s on the field and with his teammates on the sidelines. Time will tell. But if the draft was tomorrow, I wouldn’t hesitate taking him with our first pick.

But that doesn’t mean the others won’t be very good in the nfl

I’m not giving them up for a 6th!
Make them play out the contract and see how it goes!

The Comp picks should be at least that good?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think so Wyo. I’m pretty sure part of the formula is production from the year before they leave which would be this year. For Drake right now, you would get a 7th RD pick if you get anything. Maybe you’d get more for Parker, but he’d have to pick up his play some to get more,I mean he has 18 catches in 6 games for 3 catches a game. What kind of comp pick do you think we’ll get for that?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think either is part of the future either
But chances are – the 6th rounder won’t be either…lol

Let’s not throw away players bc they aren’t part of the future
      Contracts expire

We don’t have to trade them
If some one offers us fair value – okay

But th res not a lot of benefit to accumulating lots of late draft picks

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I understand that, and I don’t necessarily disagree. There are other RB’s available on the market like Melvin Gordon and Rashaad Penny and Robby Anderson is available from the Jets. Drake is a FA next year so that hurts our trade value. Maybe Detroit is desperate and they give us more for Drake, but if I were Detroit I’d probably look at either of the other 2 RB’s I mentioned with Kerryon Johnson out for the season. Penny has tons of potential and more years on his contract and Gordon is better than either of them but will carry a much higher price.

TO ALL OF MY CRITICS: I would have traded up in the 3rd round to get Elflein. The “Elf” is a competent to above average Center or Guard. Which ADDS to his value. YOU GUYZ JUST HATE IT when I point out what I thought was OBVIOUS: to wit, our O-Line has been, and continues to be, among the very worst in the NFL.
BUT DON”T CRITICIZE ROSS OR GRIER. It’e REALLY someone else’s fault. Well, sorry, but I will NOT accept your explanations for failure which, for the most part, seem to consist of attacking the critics FOR POINTING OUT THERE’S A PROBLEM!!!
    —————–
You are what your record says you are. And our record says WE SUCK BIG TIME!!!! Criticizing the critics for pointing it out is NOT a CURE!! AND, as the Cleveland Browns continue to prove, “Blowing up the roster,” by itself, IS NOT THE ANSWER. Having an owner who can make good appointments for key positions (Head of Personnel, GM, Head Coach, etc., etc.) is the #1 requirement. #2 is having really competent people “Doing the Picking” come draft time and come free agent time. The Dolphins are “O-FER” on all those requirements. And, most assuredly, we will NOT win a playoff game until both Ross and Grier are replaced. Each has been with this franchise for more than a decade and we have very little positive on the football field to show for it.
    —————
SO TIM, PIGGY and all the rest of you who just CAN’T stand my criticisms, I’ve got some good advice for you. SKIP BY MT COMMENTS as fast as you can and continue to tell yourselves that “Everything’s going to be OK. Just follow the plan, support the proven incompetents, and we’ll be just fine!”

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I can stand them OD

      I disagree with those posts.

Elflein hasn’t had a good nfl career
It would have been a mistake to draft him

And I wanted to draft him and didn’t want to draft McMillan
But in hindsight I can see that would have been wrong
It was actually a good move by the FO not to draft Elflein

So using him as a centerpiece to tell everyone how much we should hate Ross and everyone he employs doesn’t make much sense

The fact that you see that observation as blindly agreeing with everything the Dolphins do, is what I actually can’t stand. That bothers me bc I think I was respectful in the way I approached you about it, and instead of thinking about it, you are now saying I am saying something I never was.

I don’t say don’t criticize Roos or grier
I’ve criticized Ross before and I will again, I actually agree with you about Ross on many points and I don’t care for him either
But if I think the criticism is misplaced, I say something

It doesn’t make sense to criticize The Dolphins for something that was actually a good decision. You should be giving them credit for that.

I dont really want to be perpetually irrationally angry at everything Ross and anyone he employs
That’s not supporting incompetents, that’s just being rationale

    ————————————————–
I don’t think you can accurately compare them this season. Alabama has not even played a ranked team in the top 25. Not only that but only 2 of Alabama’s 8 opponents have a winning record. Their opponents combined records are 25-39. Some are saying that Burrow looked “meh” yesterday when he went 32-42 for 321 against the 9th ranked team with arguably the best DL in college football. This is a brand new offense (Saints offense) that LSU installed this season and Burrow has mastered it while Tua is running the same system since he has been at Alabama against lesser opponents. I can find at least 20 other QB’s, pull them from their teams, put them on this Alabama team with all their weapons against this easy schedule and they would look like Tua. Just sayin! Heck, look what Mac Jones did in place of Tua yesterday.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not downing Tua. I got him as my #2 QB, but some are anointing him as the next Patrick Mahomes and he is not. I mentioned yesterday that, right now, my QB list would be Burrow, Tua, Eason, Fromm, Herbert, Hurts, Ehlinger, Love, ….. Been saying the same thing, albeit not as eloquent. I thought Tua was “exposed” last year in the final two games against the better competition, Georgia and Clemson.

Then, add to that his receivers are always open as the CBs in college are not good enough to cover NFL ready players. I have never seen Tua thread the needle or do anything on his own to carry the team. Alabama carries him. Not convinced he’s second best QB either.

Guess when the byline has Jackson, Mando and Beasley in it the Herald is saying they are darn sure of this. An one other good point they bring up is that as active as we will be in FA…. not gonna be any comp pick for Drake if he walks end of the season.
    ———–
The Miami Dolphins have agreed in principle to a trade involving running back Kenyan Drake, according to a league source, and Drake did not accompany the team to Pittsburgh for Monday night’s game against the Steelers.

The identity of the team acquiring Drake was not immediately known, but an agreement was reached Saturday night.

Several teams, including the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions, have inquired about Drake in recent days. It’s unclear what the Dolphins will get in return, but Miami has asked teams for a fourth-round pick, according to a source briefed on the situation.

The Dolphins wanted to sign Drake to a contract extension last month, but his agents never responded to Miami’s offer. Drake has said he hasn’t asked for a trade, but his disinterest in a new contract with the team left the Dolphins believing he doesn’t have a long-term future here.

If we trade Drake that might spark some talk that Ross is cheap and doesn’t want to pay players. Ugh! Then they will lament Drake being gone for the next 3 years and asking why we let him go.

Just something to look forward to. lol

Stanger, I have not really looked at other team needs yet. I will when we get closer to the draft. I am sure Bengals will be drafting a QB. Are Falcons getting close to being done with “deer in the headlight” Matt Ryan? I dunno. I think 2 QB’s could go in the top 5 and 3 probably in top 10. I think maybe 4 or 5 in the 1st round cause many of the top QB’s in the league are getting OLD.
Think about it; Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Rivers, Rothlisberger, Ryan. They getting old.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Thanks BBM — at this point pretty convinced we’ll be grabbing a GB with our first pick….. otherwise Rosen would be playing. Just wondering how deep the top end is. Would hate to give a bundle to move up if not #1, and even if that would prefer to move down a couple notches and get the same if someone else has a different guy in mind.

  66. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Stanger, we never know how these guys will pan out in the NFL anyway. I would rather get DE Chase Young #1. Then get a accurate strong arm QB like Burrow, Herbert, or Eason as I think, if we take Young, Tua goes to Cincy.

HERD: IF YOU were referring to me, YES, I DID GET THE MESSAGE THAT WE WOULD SUCK THIS YEAR. I got it about nine years ago when I became convinced that Ross was meant to run a real estate firm, NOT a FOOTBALL TEAM!!!
    —————————
THE OTHER SIDE of this equation, (also no shock to me) is the fact that ROSS STILL BELIEVES that he and the clowns he has appointed are his choice to improve the team come next season. Now I’ll admit, with all these draft choices, it’s going to be hard NOT to improve the team. After all, any dumb ass with enough picks could improve on a 1-win or 2-win team, which is what I expected from this team. HOWEVER, will “blowing up the roster turn us into contenders in 2 or 3 seasons?? I seriously doubt it. But, by then, it will be too late for Ross (who will be well into his 80’s) or ME (who may be dead from cancer by then). At that point, we will look longingly at those 6-7 and 8 win seasons longingly as “the good ole days!”
    —————————-
TO REPEAT, “Blowing up the Roster” won’t produce the kind of results we want. THE ONLY WAY to build a REAL SUPER BOWL CONTENDER IN MIAMI is for Ross to sell the team and let the new owner “Pick Better Pickers.” Our current group of pickers can’t even pick their collective noses and get that job done right!!!

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So what team do you think Drake gets traded to and for what?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think at best we get a 5th, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s DET. He’s a FA this season, so given that, I’d think they might be willing to spend a 5th rather than a 1st or 2nd that LAC would want for Melvin Gordon. Wouldn’t be shocked if it was a 6th.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If he’s not going to re-sign I’d take whatever, but maybe it’s for a player.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s kinda the thing, we don’t have a lot of leverage here. I think the cost is the thing that gives us the advantage over the Chargers. I think Gordon is the better fit for Detroit, but I doubt they want o not only give up a high pick for Gordon but then pay him because they already have Kerryon Johnson.

  73. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I think I’d rather have a player they like other than another mid-late round pick. A 4th would be great because we might not have one. A 5th or later… okay, whatever! A surprise team might be the Ravens and they’re on the bye.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Way things like this have worked in the past, if we were asking for a 4th will probably be a 5th. Player an option too, but don’t think trades this time of year normally go that way.

Yeah I know but that means we’re not re-signing him. 😉

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree, but on the same token, it’s bad that a lot of players just want out. Other players on other teams see this and it doesn’t bode well for us. Next year we’re going to be looking to sign free agents and things like this become obstacles. I hope it’s not an issue next season. It’s strange though because Drake was always a second fiddle at Alabama behind T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry. Minkah was always a Swiss army knife at Alabama and yet they bitch about those things when they come here. Fuck ’em I say!

I honestly think it’s just part of the drama the media sprinkles on it’s stories with in hopes someone is reading the Dolphins this season.

I don’t think Any of these things have been anywhere near the bitter disputes they are reported to be

In drakes case he wasn’t getting many touches at all
And every player wants to be a free agent if they can be anyway

He’s just making decisions for his best interest going forward, there’s no need for us to take it personal

Nfl players have a small window to make an impact
So they need to take advantage of whatever opportunities they have
Even if that means changing teams

        It’s just a business decision

I doubt it is a reflection of the organization or the players as people

  76. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    Mike E

I think by the end of the year the free agents out there will be seeing how well this team of scrubs came together and played their hearts out. Knowing Fins are going to be adding a ton of talent to that mix bodes well into them thinking this is a place on the right track.

I could just go the other route and do nothing but bitch incessantly about things, but I don’t find any fun in that.

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, you’re right. Not everyone sees it that way though. We’ll see.

  78. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – I have no idea how much is media driven or not but the fact is we did trade away last year’s 1st RD pick because he asked to be traded. That ain’t good from any angle. As far as Drake, if we were offering him a contract, he should take it because I don’t think he’s going to go into FA with a very high value unless he starts kicking ass wherever he’s traded to.

  79. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I don’t care if the Jets finish with a worse record. They already have their QB so they won’t take one.

  80. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – I don’t know what we offered Drake, but his value just can’t be high, he hasn’t really done a lot in 4 years. 1532 yards in 3 1/2 years is not top tier RB money. It’s not even 2nd tier RB money. Eventually, potential runs out and it’s what have you done.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Darnold might be fools gold. I think that entire QB class all need work. Lots of flaws in all of them for different reasons. But patience is not something that isn’t accepted anymore. If so does he do it at the same high level?
ESPN is trying convince everyone lately that since Brady is selling his house, he plans to leave the patriots this offseason

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nobody wants to hear it and times are different, but Bill Belichick is the best coach of all time. He’s been a head coach and asst. coach in more Super Bowls than anyone else in history by a lot. That’s not a coincidence. He is that good. My friends and I who don’t want that to be true as we are all fans of other teams, have decided we need to put the bias away. Reality is reality. We can’t keep looking for nonsense to say it’s not so. They get penalized for “cheating with draft picks and Brady being suspended etc.” and what do they do? They just just keep on winning with whatever they have. Let it go!

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Fact is Belichick doesn’t need coordinators. He can run every facet of the team and for the most part he does. That’s part of the reason why none of his assistants have really had success. Their success is largely due in part to Belichick.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

His assistants didn’t sell THEIR Souls. Only Bill & Tom did.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Part of that is that is his asst. coaches haven’t had the same amount of time. They’ve had some success and others are just getting starting. It’s hard to compare anyone to his run. He makes Shula look average. Think about that.
