Dolphins play best game of season – Fall to Bills 31-21

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick played his best game of the season for the Dolphins. It wasn’t enough however due partly to his own huge mistake, a terrible INT at a point of the game where the Dolphins had the ball for about 10 minutes on a long drive to start the 3rd QTR and Fitzpatrick threw a crucial interception at the BUF 12 yard line. The Dolphins had an opportunity at a minimum to go up 17-9 with a FG, but the Dolphins wanted the TD, much like the decision to try for the 2 PT conversion last week. Good idea, poor execution.

It’s clear that Mark Walton has now emerged as the lead back as Kenyan Drake is expected to be traded before the deadline. That would leave the Dolphins with Walton, Ballage, Gaskin, Laird and Cox. I wouldn’t expect a big return for Drake, probably a 5th or 6th at best. DeVante Parker had a nice game, one of his best contributions in some time, and it wasn’t even really that good. Parker finished with 5 catches for 55 yards and 1 TD. Gesicki is really heating up making tough catches almost routinely now. Gesicki added 4 catches for 41 yards, a couple of them in serious traffic with a high degree of difficulty. Also very encouraging is WR Preston Williams who continues to grow before our eyes. Is he not doing what we hoped DeVante Parker could be? Williams finished with 6 catches for 82 yards leading the team in both categories.

The Dolphins won the T.O.P. battle in this game but still ended up on the short side on the scoreboard. As per usghe, we need to score more TD’s. We have had a devil of a time getting into the end zone, which is odd considering we have a fairly strong runner in Walton, 2 WR with good size (P. Williams 6’5″ and D. Parker 6’3″) and a TE with a huge catch radius and great vertical capabilities in Mike Gesicki. Hopefully we will figure out a way to use all of them.

The Dolphins managed to get 2 sacks yesterday and to no one’s surprise, it was newcomers, LB Vince Biegel got his 2nd and Taco Charlton added his team leading 3rd sack. Once again, Charles Harris remains sackless and once again you can read that as you like. It’s amazing we don’t get torched with the guys we have been playing in our secondary. Ken Webster, Ryan Lewis, Jomal Wiltz. Bobby McCain and Eric Rowe started at S yesterday. I mean who are some of these guys?

It’s impossible not to respect for Brian Flores. He’s doing this with smoke and mirrors. I know we haven’t won yet but it’s hard to expect him to win with the roster we’re throwing out there week after week. The Bills are a legit contender in the AFC for at a minimum a WC berth, but their defense is one of the better units in the NFL and we handled them in this game. The score doesn’t show it but the T.O.P. does. If not for that ill timed INT late in the 3rd QTR we had a shot to win this game. I think that was the turning point right there. Last week we took the game to the very end although we played so poorly in that game. This week we played head to head with the Bills but came up short. We’re heading in the right direction, and have to take comfort in that. At 0-6, it’s all we got.

GO DOLPHINS!!

I can still play 6 chords. Just needs to learn techniques. And grow some callouses.

Just play! That’s how you turn 6 chords into 24 with subtle adjustments. Callouses are the physical part of it. Your fingers on metal strings everyday.

I haven’t been an active player in recent years because my hands are tight from some some sort of arthritis. It sucks! I can’t do what I could do 10 years ago. It’s hard to deal with. Friends of mine don’t accept that reasoning but it’s true. Maybe I’m making excuses but when I try, I get cramped up. Once again, it sucks!!! We’ll see!

        Just play!!!

USA TODAY’s Touchdown Wire has recognized the NFL’s five best offensive line performances of the NFL’s Week 7 action, and the Miami Dolphins surprisingly found themselves on the list. The Dolphins are ranked as the league’s third-best offensive line showing of the week, thanks to their collective effort to physically push around the Buffalo Bills defense, which has one of the more talented defensive front sevens in all of football.

Shaq Calhoun, Evan Boehm, Jesse Davis, J’Marcus Webb and Michael Deiter.

Dolphins O-line recognized as one of NFL’s best in Week 7

this is a good argument against wasting top picks on fat lessor skilled players on the lines,

OL or DL should NOT be the top pick IMO, it almost NEVER works out for Miami

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

fat lessor skilled players on the lines,????????

You’ve been spending to much time thinking about Landry!

      • seriously? did You read the article?

which rounds were the third best OL in the NFL last week picked in?

Shaq Calhoun, Evan Boehm, Jesse Davis, J’Marcus Webb and Michael Deiter.

and where are WIlkins, Tunsil, Harris, James, Jordan, Long at?

Damn, every team we needed to win or lose did the opposite yesterday. That sucks. Was that Tannyhill with a 4th qtr winning TD drive yesterday? Good for him!

  11. Wyoming, have You seen Christian Wilkins, the overhyped Dolphins first round pick last year,
do anything this year to help the team?

would the Fins have gotten better value with someone like Devin bush LB?

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

You mean a guy drafted ahead of Wilkins?

      • thats the guy, Steelers got him and they had the number 20 selection, they traded up to get a damn good player

we stayed put and selected Wilkins, who has been a flop this year

but my question is who was the better value, who is the better player this season, Wilkins or Bush?

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Better value? They gave up their 2nd and a 3rd in 2020 to move up.
Haven’t even played half a season in their careers yet.
        LOL

      • i already answered a imple question below

its obvious Bush is a far superior talent with mad skills, a team player
but Wilkins is a selfish premature ejectionator, lol

hey, i dont like the facts either, i really wanted Wilkins to kick some ass this year, hes not though, it is what it is

steelers knew Bush was their man, and went for it, the Fins could take some lessons here

How much of a difference are Minka and Bush making?

    • consider our record,

btw have You seen Bush play this year? he is incredible, making big plays, even a couple Touchdowns

tonight We will get to see both Bush and Wilkins and
hopefully WIlkns can prove himself worthy someday, jury is still out for lunch

Bush has already proven himself, and like Wilkins still has alot of upside

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  19. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Drake is a talented RB. In the right system he will be awesome. In the wrong system, he will look like Levion(SP) Bell on the Jests. I think AZ might be a good spot for him. He can be replaced with no problem in our system, IMO. That extra pick can nab us another one or use it to trade up for Chase Young if we start winning.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s crazy how bad Bell looks with the jests
      System matters
As does coaching to fit the talent

Bell was great at Michigan State
I don’t think bell is in decline in terms of talent
I just think what’s happening to him now is a direct result of Gase’s stubbornness

  20. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Good to know a player’s entire career is defined in one ejection in their rookie season.

    SBJ

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I tend to think Chase Young may be the best player in the draft
He’s earned his place as the #2 overall prospect IMO
But whether some one wants to say he’s #1 or # 10 is insignificant to me

We need both a QB and pass rusher, so come draft time, the only thing that matters is who is on the board and where we pick

I personally thinks the draft should fall 1. Tua then 2. young
But i wouldn’t write anything in Stone at this point
Nor would get carried away with comparing the prospects to prior ones

There are talented QBs and OL on the heals of those two prospects

But it’s hard for me to fathom the idea that Young doesn’t Have a chance to dominate in this league

If there is anything I have learned from watching decades of the draft it’s that it’s an Inexact science

We’ve seen Alex Smith universally ranked higher than Aaron Rogers
Mariotta called one of the best QB prospects to come out since Luck, only to be replaced by a QB drafted about 10 spots after Luck
    The 2015 draft is particularly questionable…in hindsight…

So don’t get carried away with some of the metrics of whether Young is better or worse than the Bosa brothers

The nuances that may give someone a better or worse grade aren’t really a substitute for some of the other factors that are heard to measure

The Dolphins needs to build a strong culture to bring talented players up
    They also need talented players
And we have the ammo for that

  22. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Dolphins 3 Steelers 2

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Christina Wilkins has 18 total tackles on the year
He’s on pace for 48 tackles

For comparison, JJWatt had 56 as a rookie and usually hovered around 80 in his prime years, but of course Watt was a beats pass rusher, probably the best ever 5 technique DE in terms of sacks

But generally the 5 technique DE just doesn’t put up big stats

I’m not sure what people expect of him, but he’s starting and putting up respectable numbers from what is expected of him. I don’t call that a bust. We will see where he goes from here but some of the stuff I’ve heard criticizing him has been off the wall

Our rush defense is bad at the whole. How much of that can be attributed to a rookie is arguable but it’s a bit crazy to expect a rookie to make a bad run defense better by himself while the rest of the team is in transition

  24. Bush has 52 tackles, 1 sack, 4 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions, 3 [pass defended, and 6 points

  32. 2020 first round: Dolphins, Steelers, Texans
The Dolphins have their own first-round pick, which will likely be the No. 1 pick, and Miami also picked up Pittsburgh’s first-rounder after trading defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick and Houston’s 2020 and 2021 first-round picks for Laremy Tunsil. Since Pittsburgh lost quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the season and is dealing with a couple of other key injuries, the Steelers’ pick could be a top-16 selection. The Texans are a playoff contender with quarterback Deshaun Watson.

    2020 second round: Dolphins, Saints
The Dolphins own their own second-round pick, which will likely be the top selection in the second round, and Miami wisely moved down in last year’s draft to pick up New Orleans’ 2020 second-round selection. With backup Teddy Bridgewater going undefeated for an injured Drew Brees, that pick likely will be a late-round selection.

2020 third round: Dolphins, (And a possible compensatory pick for James)
The Dolphins were intentionally inactive during free agency this past offseason because they coveted the early compensatory pick they should receive for losing Ja’Wuan James, a former first-round pick who signed a massive deal with the Denver Broncos. Compensatory picks don’t get announced until the NFL’s owners meetings in the spring, but this is as close to a done deal as it gets.

2020 fourth round: None (Pick sent to Steelers)
The Dolphins exchanged their fourth-round pick for a fifth-round pick with the Steelers to sweeten the Fitzpatrick trade. Miami also moves up one round in the 2021 draft, sending the Steelers a 2021 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round selection. But Miami won’t have an early pick on Day 3 of the 2020 draft.

2020 fifth round: Steelers, (And a possible compensatory pick for Wake)
The Dolphins sent the Cardinals their fifth-round pick to sweeten the 2019 second-round selection they used to acquire quarterback Josh Rosen. The Dolphins should receive a 2020 compensatory pick in the fifth-round for losing Cameron Wake to the Tennessee Titans after he signed a three-year deal in the offseason that’s worth $23 million. The biggest free-agent additions Miami signed, and kept this offseason, were cornerback Eric Rowe and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Both of those veterans work against them in the compensatory formula, so it’s possible this compensatory pick could be lower.

2020 sixth and seventh rounds: Cowboys, Chiefs, Colts, Cardinals
These picks are grouped together because there’s a lot of complexity to agreements made with trade partners. Miami acquired Dallas’ sixth-round pick by trading defensive end Robert Quinn and his bloated contract to the Cowboys. Miami also has a seventh-round pick from Kansas City from a trade made last season for defensive back Jordan Lucas. Miami traded a seventh-rounder to Minnesota for offensive guard Danny Isidora. The Dolphins also swapped late-round picks with Colts for offensive lineman Evan Boehm, but the specifics of that deal will be determined after the season. It could be a sixth- or seventh-round pick. The Dolphins also acquired a conditional sixth-round pick — which could turn into a fifth-round pick —from Arizona for Kenyan Drake.

    • agreed there is no compare, one is a self admitted selfish player that hasnt helped his team, and the other is front runner for the defensive rookie of the year.

both were available in the first round, steelers got a great defender, Dolphins got a selfish me first player that has done extremely little to justify his first round selection

“I was extremely selfish,” Wilkins said, via the Palm Beach Post. “This is the ultimate team sport. It’s not just about me. I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed in myself about something, especially something that was in my control. Really, really shouldn’t have happened. There’s no place for it in this game and that’s not the standard I hold myself to because I just love this game, I try to respect this game as much as possible, play it as competitively as possible. This game was meant to be competitive, not combative. I really let myself down and my teammates down in just a selfish moment so early in the game.”

    • D's avatar D says:

They picked up Drake with intentions of a long term plan. They aren’t competitive this year and he has a contract thats up after this year. A team in their position wouldn’t trade for a guy like him if he wasn’t in a long term plan. He wasn’t to replace a roster spot. I think they plan to use Drake as a feature back for the rest of the year and pair him with DJ moving forward to take carries off him.

  46. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Happy B-Day Herd!

  47. D's avatar D says:

I dont think the compensation for Drake was fair but i think its what we were going to get in that situation. I think it will wind up a 5th after all is said and done and i was expecting a 4th to be fair so its not far off anyways.

At this point after watching OSU WIS game, if we have the number 1 spot, im trading with Cincy, who are going to want to reboot with a new QB and we should be able to get a 2nd or future first in return. That way they can secure their guy instead of risking losing out. Same can be said about us but i think we would be better off trading back. Lets say we get a next year second in return, we would have 2nd pick, possibly a 4-6 pick, and a 20-25 pick. Then we’d have 1st and 2nd pick in the second round and a 3rd later in the round. If we wanted to get back in the first we could package a second up with day 3 pick and move back in, or just sit still and take who is available.

This would be an ideal trade back scenario for me. Trade back from 1 to 2, pick up a 2nd, draft Young, then Thomas LT from UGA, then if there is a run on QB’s we could put the 20-25th pick together with 1 or 2 2nds and go back up and get our guy, maybe Burrow or Fromm, or even Eason or Ehlinger or stay put and take one of those guys. If we dont have to use any of the 2’s id go Solomon Kindley UGA OG, CJ Henderson CB UF, and Tyler Biadasz OC WIS. Use the 3rd’s to grab a S and another pass rush,

Alternately with a trade back from 1 to 2 and then trade back up from 2nd to 1st scenario. Chase Young, Thomas LT UGA , trade 20-25 1c and 2b to move up to 15ish and take Derrick Brown NT/DT from Auburn, and then pick up one of the aforementioned QB’s with 2a, and use 2c for Tyler Biadasz. Pick up another OL and a CB wth the 3rds we will have.

  48. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – I don’t think Drake is a feature back. I guess we’ll find out. I mean Edmonds is out with a hammy and Johnson has been a shell of what he used to be so for a while Drake may get a heavier workload but I don’t think he’s the future

Things may change, but looking at it right now we may have to choose who we want. I think it’s very possible that Tua, Burrow, Chase Young, and Andrew Thomas all go in the top 7 or 8. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see Pittsburgh’s pick being any better than 10th-12th.

I’m curious to see how Drake performs in another environment. From a Dolphins standpoint we obviously want him to do well so we get a 5th.

    • drg's avatar drg says:

I don’t get why they didn’t want him. He’s a solid back, not a ton of miles on his legs and shouldn’t be that expensive to sign? Guess they either didn’t expect him to want to be back or they estimated the price would be higher than what they considered his worth. Crazy how much the RB value has plummeted over the years.

As far as late picks, the idea is to stockpile them. More picks means better odds to find a gem or at least more ammo to maneuver with trades.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess he gave indications he didn’t want to be back, so they figured since he’s gone at the end of the year anyway, let’s get what we can for him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They sent an offer to Drake’s camp and they didn’t even get back to them. It seems to me that they wanted to test FA. That is why some people are questioning the Cardinals trading for him because they’re not winning this year and they have no control over him in 2020.

The one thought I had about Laird is he’s kind of slim for a RB, looks more like a WR, so maybe they want him to get a little bigger and stronger, or he was just lost in a crowded backfield. So maybe now he gets a chance.

    IT’S GAME DAY BITCHES!!
    Go Dolphins!

I agree with a few that Drake isn’t a feature back. He has never been his whole college/pro career (8 years), really. I don’t think that is just a scheme or situational issue. The positive for him is that today’s NFL doesn’t lend itself to 30 carry backs anymore, so it’s not really a big deal. The key is to figure out how to use him. You’d think you’d want to use him like how they use McCaffrey.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we did utilize Drake in some different ways but our offense has never been consistent since he’s been here. I always felt he could be like what Kamara does in New Orleans but that offense is one of the best.

  65. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Tim :I did actually see Laird in a jersey on sidelines last week .. it is a little disheartening that he has not been more utilized on offence .. good chance tonight maybe …..Drake gone , Gaskins inactive .. Ballage mostly ineffective so far .. or maybe Ballage goes off .. hopefully a close game and we play like we belong

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Yeah he was playing ST last week. I think he’ll be in the rotation a little bit tonight on Offense

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh okay I didn’t really notice Laird but that’s a good sign. Gaskin got jumped by Walton so that one I understand but I’m sure he’ll get his opportunity this year as well. We all know this is an audition season so I think we’ll see some different lineups week to week with the exception of the guys who have really taken advantage of those opportunities and have proven themselves moving forward.

  66. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

SO based on our waiver p/u today , we may have a double X rated secondary soon

  67. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m sorry, but I think we got absolutely HOSED by getting a mere conditional 6th rounder in 2020 for the Drake. Yes, we all understand the situation that he’s not signed through 2019 (yet), but c’mon. No, I’m not griping about the trade itself. Yes, I’m griping about the compensation.

Very little tread on his tires, acceleration like nobody’s biz, turns on a pin, catches like a WR, and runs like a deer… should have at least fetched a conditional 5th rounder in 2019, and yes, there was more than one team vying for him, thus his return should have been greater, and I’m not even being greedy here, SMH. Seriously: in the right system, he could become close to what Le’Veon Bell was for the Stealers*.

Anyway, best of luck to Kenyan Drake in the future. Hopefully, he can turn that conditional 6th into a solid 5th for us in the 2020 Draft. I shall miss him, but we’ll always have the “Miracle in Miami”, thanks to him.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

*very little wear on his tires

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You bashed the trade then understood it all at the same time. LOL

If he was going to walk in FA next year on an 0-6 team you get something for him. It was the best offer we received. You can’t demand that teams give you something they’re not willing to offer. All those mid and late round picks can also be used in trades to target players you covet in next year’s draft.

The Cardinals are the team that you should question. They’re not in the mix for the playoffs and they don’t control Drake from hitting FA in 2020. So what did they potentially rent him for?

  68. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, following up on your progression, evaluation, and hopefully improvement comment. The players from this year who stick next year will be able to help set the standard of the culture and the systems which nobody knew this year. Also the coaches will evaluate what they were doing and what to keep and what to change as they learned along the way. Then the next group of talent comes in and phase II begins.

As fans we just have to suck it up this year and accept the change in philosophy and the turnover of the roster. Things can change pretty quickly when you get the right group of talent. Look at the 49ers, they’re 7-0 this year but were 4-12 last year and picked #2 in this past draft.

Starting at RB is so overrated unless you have “the guy” which we don’t. We all know how teams utilize RBs these days.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think it’s more a statement that we’ll be seeing a larger dose of Walton tonight than we have all season. I think he’s earned it, and hope he makes the best of this opportunity.

        GO WALTON!!!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe but Walton got a good dose last week. I expect to see more of the same. He was impressive last week. If he keeps it up he’s in the mix for next year and that’s what this season is all about.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed! How often do teams have three 1st rd picks and two 2nd rd picks in a draft and then the following year two 1st rd picks and two 2nd rd picks? Very rare stuff. You can really turn a team around with that.

    ————
Tim, we HAD to trade Drake in order to get any kind of compensation whatsoever, being he’s not signed through 2019. I didn’t bash the trade (read again), I just thought we could have gotten more in compensation while not even being greedy… I bashed the compensation.

We obviously took the best offer (Cards outbid the Lions, and other teams as well), but I’m stunned that’s the best offer we got in return for Drake. I’m perplexed. Maybe I over-rate Drake, but a conditional 6th in 2020? Seriously???

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Apparently this is what the league thinks of him….

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You said we got hosed. And yes seriously on the compensation. Other teams were offering 7th rd picks and even in 2021. Also the 6th can become a 5th (our pick) from the Rosen trade if he meets a certain criteria.
