Offensive Line – Current depth chart and needs

Many of us here believe this position will be a major focal point in both Free Agency and in the draft. Of course, the former will determine the latter. How much we’re able to accomplish in Free Agency on the O-line will then dictate how much we need to do in the draft. I’m pretty sure we’re going to try and get at least one starter, maybe 2 in FA. Let’s take a look at what we have now and I’ll outline where we need to improve.

LT – Julien Davenport / J’Marcus Webb

I think both of those players would better serve the team as depth players and not as starters. I’d feel comfortable with either of them in a backup role but I don’t want to start 2020 with either of them manning the LT spot. Both are journeyman type players who can fill in as the starter but neither are guys you build around or with.

LG – Michael Deiter / Evan Brown

I think Deiter has potential to be a bonafide starter in the NFL. I don’t think he’s quite there yet and he needs to work hard in the weight room and increase his strength and balance. It may be one position we don’t go strong with in either FA or the draft. In any case, we need to improve the depth there and that can be taken care of either way. Evan Brown is a backup interior guy both at G/C. He will need to fight for a spot on the roster next season.

C – Dan Kilgore / Keaton Sutherland

Kilgore was a valuable leader in 2019 but I believe we will be looking for a young center to replace Kilgore, or at the very least give him strong competition for next season. I think ideally we’d like to grow a young line together and a young stud center who will make the line calls for a decade or so is a good place to start. I think we’re going to handle this position in the draft and likely in RD1.

RG – Evan Boehm / Shaq Calhoun

I like the toughness Boehm brought with him to Miami but I’m not sure if he’s got the skillset to hold down his position. I won’t be surprised in the least if we look for an upgrade in free agency and then possibly add more depth in the draft. Shaq Calhoun looked overmatched in some action this season. He may need more work or at best he may be a depth player.

RT – Jesse Davis

So this is really the wild card. As so many prognosticators have us choosing QB Tua Tagovaiola, then our RT in essence becomes the proverbial LT. Jesse Davis has made a lot of strides, he really has, but if we make the investment at #5 on Tua you bet your ass we’re going to be looking to protect that investment. While Jesse Davis has improved, no one would be calling him an elite tackle. He’s serviceable, but this is a spot we’re going to have to take seriously if we do indeed draft Tua. If we don’t take Tua, Jesse Davis is probably our starting RT next season and we’ll need some depth there.

In Free Agency, one of the top interior linemen available is Brandon Scherff. Scherff was the #5 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He’s played mostly RG in his 5 seasons with the Skins. He just turned 28 so a good age for a rebuild. RT Jack Conklin is another top player available. I’ll be surprised if TEN lets him go, they traded up to get Conklin at #8 in the 2016 NFL Draft, the same draft that Laremy Tunsil fell to us. Both of these players will be getting premium salaries but the good news is we can absorb that easily. We have the money and we need to spend some anyway and either player would be a huge upgrade for us. Both players have legit skillsets and both of them bring plenty o nasty!

In the draft, Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Willis, Tristan Wirfs, Austin Jackson and Mekhi Bectin head up the OT’s although there are some who believe Wirfs may benefit moving inside. Tyler Biadasz, Cesar Ruiz, and Lloyd Cushenberry head up the centers. We should have a shot at some of the top players even if we take a QB at #5 because we’ll have the #18 and #26 picks too. Plus we have two 2nd RD picks as well #39 and #56, where we can land a solid interior lineman. We’re in a good place, we just have to take care of business!

Next week I’m going to look at the defensive line.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

    Priority!

Great run down on it Mike E. Reading it position by position makes you wonder how we wonder so many games in the 2nd half. Kilgore can still go, but he’s getting long in the tooth. So we need guys for 4 out of 5 positions who will be starting 2 years from now…. and that is if Dieter sticks.

Guess we don’t have to get all of them this year, but as stacked as we are will ammo why not?

  3. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Good write up Mike

On Conklin, I actually think the Titans might let him go. They have to re-sign Tannehill and Henry and I think those 2 players are priorities for them

They have a lot of cap room to work with
But they might have to make Conklin the highest paid RT in football to keep him
I’m not sure they are ready for that

The titans don’t resign players during the season, so they have their work cut out for them this offseason

I don’t know how they keep all 3 players

Conklin has also had injury issues and some erratic play in Tennessee
His future looks bright, but I’m not sure the titans value him as much as the free agent market does

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Piggy. The Titans may have to let him go but I know at one time they were totally thrilled to have him. Even if TEN lets him go, he will be highly sought after, as will Scherff

  4. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That list of our starters btw also makes me sick

At best we have 1 good OL
And we are hoping that one develops

Maybe I’m being a bit rough on guys like Jesse Davis or Prince but I don’t think they are starters

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Prince is gone. I think Danny Isidora, the guy they traded for is also gone. We definitely have work to do just to get the O-line respectable.

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Well we also have OTs Pankey and Okeke, but it’s understandable that you left them off, because they are camp bodies at best.

We also have a new OL coach. And a new OC.
Here’s hoping Gailey’s schemes help our OL and RBs.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

here here! SOMETHING has to break our way! How can we have had 5 first round pick on our line the past 15 seasons and still had one of the worse lines in the NFL year after year?

  6. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Speaking of RBs, I really really want to get Swift in round one, and if not then certainly Taylor with Dibbins a strong maybe in round 2. I think we should draft 2 RBs this year, but I do forget that we have Samaje Perine @ 5-11 and 240 out of Oklahoma. If we can get him running downill, maybe we can use that guy like a Derrick Henry, even if not as a bell cow.

He’s only 24, so I would hate to see him in a SB in 2 years for some other team.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tua was on CBS and they were talking about Tua to Miami, asking him if he’d be happy if that happened. Instead of saying he’ll be happy wherever he goes he basically said yeah, I’d be happy to come here, the climate is similar to Hawaii and he’d be close to the beach, so yeah, I’d be good with it. It’s almost like it’s a foregone conclusion at this point. I think I would be surprised if we don’t take him if he’s there at 5.

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Webb and Boehm are FAs, so they would need to be resigned against our cap money, which means if we signed a FA stud @ OG or drafted one @ OT, those 2 guys above might not get new contracts with us.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – Spotrac shows both (Boehm and Davenport) signed next season.

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/cap/2020/

  10. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I agree Mike E, the more I read and here, the more it looks like a done deal for Tua @ 5.

Unless someone tries to jump us to take him @ #3 or #4.
The Chargers could try to do that.
Other teams that “need” a QB seem out of range to jump that far without extreme compensation incl their #1 & 2 in 2021 as well as 2020. Teams like the Raiders, Colts, & Bucs @ 12, 13, & 14.

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Listen, we cut ties with John Denney, we are on the upswing! 🙂

  12. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good write, Mike. No doubt we need and will add upgrades on the OL. Then let them all compete and see who’s starting and made the roster for depth.

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, Danny Isidora is on the Reserve/Injured list.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really think we need to see how we approach FA and which positions we target and sign to get a better feel for the draft.

If our FO and coaches are all in on Tua so be it. We’re rebuilding and taking a chance on a QB who many felt would be the #1 pick this year a year ago is not a reach. I have my concerns with his injuries and I’ve said many times I never really saw him make contested throws that wowed me. I saw him throw to a lot of wide open receivers which shouldn’t be a knock, but I do have reservations about his ability to play above and beyond without a very talented roster around him.

The comparison I have for him is he might be like Deshaun Watson which I think we all would take right now. We have a lot of resources to upgrade the entire team this year. So I’m not going to get all crazy about one player or position.

How did we go 5-4 down the stretch with a depleted roster last year? Just think about 15 offseason upgrades across the roster. What could we do then especially if we landed a couple of special impact players? One step at a time.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Preston Williams might be a player who helps turn this franchise around. A troubled young college WR who seemed to really thrive as an UDFA rookie under Flores. You can’t teach 6-5 220 4.5 and the ability to go get it. He’s no doubt a player this team will move on with. His ACL injury mid-late season really sucked for a young guy turning his life around and becoming a pro and productive WR for us. He was balling!!!

Parker and Williams at full skill are a nightmare for opponents. Along with Gesicki and adding a dynamic RB, it’s an entirely different offense and team.

    For Piggy:

  18. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Good article Mike E

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    DeVante Parker 6-3 215 – 16 games, 72-1,202 16.7 9TD
    Preston Williams 6-5 220 – 8 games, 32-428 13.4 3TD
    Mike Gesicki 6-6 250 – 16 games, 51-570 11.2 5TD

Add a dynamic RB to these receivers and our entire team changes. Yes we need OL, pass rushers and a future QB. But we do have some playmakers.

Preston Williams tore his ACL November 3rd after putting up these numbers; 5-72 14.4 2TD against the Jets. So he’ll be about 8 months removed from surgery when TC starts. He’ll be 23 years of age in March.

Go Preston!!! If he comes back to what he was showing, no defense can defend us. Not enough matchup options.

Trying to build a solid running game added to that is huge. It changes everything.

I’d like to see a young QB (maybe Tua) attempting 25-30 passes per game. Play quality defense, run the football and make big plays in the passing game.

  20. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

You shouldnt drink and drive Typod, although I wouldn’t blame you considering the thought of Tua in Miami.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

How would Tua and his dad feel about the Dolphins taking him in the 2nd RD?

When I watched that interview with Tua yesterday he didn’t even try to downplay Tua to Miami. He was like yeah, I’d be fine with that.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just strange because usually when asked about a particular team a potential draftee will just respond with a canned answer like I’d be thrilled just to be drafted into the NFL, I’ll play anywhere.

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    This is kind of bizarre.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Even if this has one in a million chance of being true…. would Brady be a real part owner or more the Gloria Estefan or Williams sisters type?

I didn’t think that wasn’t the case. He’s signed through 2020 and Flores said at the end of the season he expects Fitz to be a part of the team.

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Nice try Bengals, but we aren’t trading 5, 18, and 26 for #1.

  26. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

As for Brady’s ‘cryptic post’, I just read in the comments section of that Florio article I posted above that Brady’s post was clearly a tribute to Kobe Bryant. Apparently it’s identical to a previous Bryant post.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t care if he buys in to the team, I really don’t want to see him play for us. It’s just wrong

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That is pretty much how I feel. I also can’t see why he would choose to play for a rebuilding team for his last year or two instead of retiring.

And I definitely don’t want to see Brady if it means getting rid of Fitz. Fitz earned his opportunity to compete for our starting QB position this year.

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Brady is NOT going to lay for the Dolphins. EVER

it is just STUPID Ill conceived nonsense. Ross would not bring a declining 40+ year old SYSTEM QUARTERBACK in when they just hired a new OC to bring in a new system. It is a mental masturbation exorcise

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Well if he doesn’t play for the Patriots, some NFL team will bring in a declining 40+ year old SYSTEM QUARTERBACK to their roster and be happy to have him, lol.

With Brady you get a mentality and leadership ability to help instill a way of doing things and a consummate pro in the QB room to help bring a young QB along.

I think from the Dolphins perspective it actually would make quite a bit of sense…if we didn’t already have Fitz. From Brady’s perspective it makes zero football sense. And for me as a Dolphins fan, like Mike said above…NFW! lol

      • D's avatar D says:

Mentoring would be the only thing it would do for us. 1 year, help a new guy get the ins and outs of being a pro, but Fitz is going to be able to give us the same thing, at a much cheaper cost.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t think you can disregard the leading an offense and helping to instill practice habits part of my statement. The coach is still instilling his way of doing things, and having a QB that has been doing it for years and leads by example is another factor that Brady would bring. It’s like having another coach on the field.

But as was pointed out, we already have Fitz, and pretty much anything you say about Brady you can say the same for Fitz, both pros and cons.

  29. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

and it figures that Omar would tweet that it makes a lot of sense. he’s a friggen idiot.

  30. D's avatar D says:

Anyone been to Antigua? Our company just sold our software to one of the hospitals there., have an install coming up later this year.

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The damn, bloody Ape speaks the truth. As a fan, Brady can kiss my ass. But from a team/business perspective, it could be a good move. I’d be slightly surprised if it did happen, but I could understand why. It really makes no sense for Brady if he wants to compete and not just be a mentor/figurehead…..who will get sacked a lot. Lol

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wouldn’t it be something if we brought Brady here and on the first play all the guys on the O-line just purposely ole’d the defenders and five guys just drove Brady’s dick into the dirt?

  33. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That’s still a better deal that the Mike Wallace contract Tim

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Without naming the prospects, if we stay where we are in the draft, what positions would you like to see addressed with our first 5 picks?

Mine is without a QB because we might or might not but it’s still the QB position. So a QB would just knock one of my picks off. In no particular order – Edge, DT, OT, C, RB.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      OL, DL Edge, RB

      Pretty much

I don’t think we need to draft a QB
But i happen to think there are good prospects there and that if we beleive in a particular QB
I think that’s what you mean too in terms of QB
We don’t need one, but it is the QB position so…

But pretty much I think the first 5 picks are about getting better up front with a QB and a RB sprinkled in if we like the QB…lol

I think we have a need at DB, but I don’t mind waiting on that

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The more I think about it, I want Derrick Brown at #5. I’d take an OL at #18 and then consider taking Swift if he’s still there at #26

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think you just reiterated what my choices were and what I said. 🙂

I have to say when it comes to DB, I was so impressed how this team found serviceable DBs and coached them up that I don’t see it as a huge need. Add a better pass rush and they’re even better. We also get Howard and McCain back and we’ll see where we are with Tankersley is at. We can add DBs in other rounds and maybe we add one in FA.

    • D's avatar D says:

If i were to do it, and this is a not what the Phins will do discussion, im OT, DT, Edge, OC/OG, RB

  35. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I totally agree with your post. I like the look and feel of that.
“The more I think about it, I want Derrick Brown at #5. I’d take an OL at #18 and then consider taking Swift if he’s still there at #26?”

Wilkins, Godchaux and Brown as our top 3 interior DL is very impressive to me. Then upgrade the edge and I think our defense jumps up in the rankings.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we both kind of feel like it’s going to be Tua at #5. I hope it isn’t. I think Tua would be shocked. lol Kinda like Brady Quinn. 🙂

      • D's avatar D says:

I really like Brown as well, i have been touting him for a while now, BUT if they take Tua i still think we will be getting a special player that will make us ok with selecting him.

    • D's avatar D says:

It might happen that Kinlaw winds up going close to 18, another option would be try to move up a little and take him, even if you take Tua at 5. Wilkins, Godchaux and Kinlaw is still a really nice set of DE/DT’s.

  36. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We have 3 first and 2 seconds. Seems those are all starters next year unless a QB.

And then there is all that money…… and they say the off season is the slow time.

  37. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Sorry OD!

  38. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I agree with all of you guys about drafting OT, Edge, RB, and I htink we need them as early as possible so we get star quality guys.

I’m so tired of being outmanned at the position.Look at the DL of the 49ers.

    BUT
we really need a Safety as well.
maybe in FA, but we have zilch @ safety. Ok, Reshad, but unless he is comeback player of the year, he’s washed up. Losing Minkah really messed up our rebuild in that sense.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      We have Eric Rowe

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Rowe and McCain are fine at Safety. Needham really progressed at CB as did some other young guys. You get Howard back and our secondary is pretty good. We need a better pass rush. We can’t get to the QB mano-a-mano as it is right now. We have to scheme it and you can only do so much of that. We need serious edge rushers that change game plans, they create havoc, more pressures, finishing with sacks and creating more turnovers. If we had that this year, I think all the DBs we went through this season would have looked better.

  39. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

And there are only 2 great safeties in the draft this year. Simmons & Delpit.

Also there are really only 3 safeties in FA that I would consider. Harris from the Vikings @ 28, Justin Simmons from the Broncos @ only 26, and Jimmy Ward, but he’s 29. Ward might be one of those “break-up-cause-you-can’t-pay-them-all” after the SB guys.

  40. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I sorta forgot Rowe, because I’ve always thought of him as a CB, but he did seem to actually be better at Safety. I’d roll with him in 2020. But he was playing nickel safety, not deep cover 1.

As for Bobby McCain, he’s never been a favorite player of mine. I think he was serviceable, not great, as a nickelback, but I thought he hurt us a lot trying to play FS last year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McCain played most of the season with a bad shoulder until he had to shut it down.

It seems to me that the team shut down guys when they said hey… 2020 is the phase we’re looking at. No reason for any of you to push it.

  41. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Speaking of Edge, I really want Epenesa. He can set the edge AND rush the passer.

Once we get the right football people in place, I think Ross will be a great owner in regards to giving the team everything they need to succeed. 47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – Epenesa is the type of guy that fits the Flores mold. He could play multiples, outside or inside if he had to. Not the most gifted athlete but strong and does his job well, and he definitely is an edge setter.

I think this is the only way to approach this FA and draft. We have so much ammunition and so many holes to fill that we can go pretty much any way the FO wants to.. Whatever path we take, just get good players.

  52. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This was an interesting scenario. Jax is about to lose DE Yannick Ngakoue to free agency so they traded their 2 first round picks and another (I think) to Cincy for #1 overall and drafted DE Chase Young. Then Cincy drafted QB Herbert at #9 with their first pick from Jax after I took Burrow.

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 5: Joe Burrow, QB, LSU (A+)
    Round 1 Pick 18: KLavon Chaisson, DE/OLB, LSU (B)
Round 1 Pick 26: Josh Jones, OT, Houston (B)

Round 4 Pick 39 (COMP): KJ Hill, WR, Ohio State (A+)
Round 5 Pick 16: Jeremy Chinn, FS/SS, Southern Illinois (A+)
Round 6 Pick 6: Khalil Davis, DT, Nebraska (A+)
Round 6 Pick 18: Harrison Bryant, TE, Florida Atlantic (A+)
Round 7 Pick 31: Joshua Kelley, RB, UCLA (A+)
Round 7 Pick 36 (COMP): Charles Snowden, OLB, Virginia (A+)

    I would take this draft!

  53. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

TBH, with the right team/coaching, I could see Epenesa developing into a Trace Armstrong. He is already a solid all round DE.

  54. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

One player that has interested me in recent days is UVA OLB Charles Snowden. He is 6’7″ and 235 pounds with the frame to easily put on 10-15 more. Projects to run possibly sub 4.6 40. I think he has tremendous upside as a developmental player on PS if not the 53. Beef him up a little and coach up his techniques. He could develop into a nice OLB/Edge player for us.

Again, he is 6’7″ with a huge tackle radius:

  55. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I also like SS/FS Jeremy Chinn with our 4th round comp pick. He is a big safety at 6’3″ 212 pounds. Solid tackler and has some ball hawk in him. Had some minor injury issues especially last season with hamstring but healthy now. Had a very good Senior Bowl week. I believe with our coaching staff and what they did with Needham could make Chinn a great safety and even nickle LB.

  56. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This is the other small school safety they were talking about at the Senior Bowl besides Chinn. Hard to gauge how he will pan out at the NFL level. He was a man amongst boys in DII. Has skills and great size/speed at 6’1″ 218 pounds. He was clocked at 4.41 and 4.45 in the 40-yard dash.

One NFL scout said, “He looks out of place pulverizing smallish ball carriers like rag dolls. With sub-4.5 speed on a 6-foot-2, 220-pound frame, on a football field of Division II competition, he stands out like a Pop Warner ringer with a forged birth certificate.” His coach said, “If he was at Clemson, at Georgia, at Alabama, one of those places, he’d be playing. He’d be starting.”

  57. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tim our ticket guy asked me what I was doing for the Super Bowl. Told him was thinking about heading out to the stadium on Saturday and checking it out. He said “don’t bother…. will be tougher to park than any game you’ve ever gone too.” And that is the day before.

Said well guess I’ll be handling the game just like someone in Oregon.

Got home from work about 2 hours ago and talked with my father-in-law for about an hour before he went to bed (he lives with us). He joined the Marine Corps 76 years ago today. Four months after joining, he was shipped off to Europe for the final year of WWII. What was more interesting was he was only 15 years old when he joined. He was basically homeless as he had 12 brothers and sisters. Him and 2 of his older brothers had to fend for themselves. They weren’t kicked out of their home. Their family just couldn’t support all of them. So he lied about his age and, at that point in the war, the Marine Corps didn’t question it. You can tell he has early onset of Alzheimer’s but when he starts telling stories, it is like it just happened yesterday. He can go on and on.

I’m really disappointed that Zach did not get into the Hall. I think that’s a horrible oversight of one of the most prepared players the NFL had ever had. There are people in that do not have the production, though I also realize he also played on a lot of teams with no playoff experience.

Never made it into pool, and 3-4 days sitting around it wearing a shirt.. back to March Caribbean winter holidays.. dropped my tablet onto bathroom floor and completely shattered the screen. 70. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m very unsure who will win this one, but I think it’ll be KC 24-20

    • D's avatar D says:

If its a close game i dont see KC winning. If they get out front early with a big score they will beat the 9ers. The 9ers dont have a come from behind team. So i kind of think it will be KC as well but something more like 34-10.

  71. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So it looks like we’ll be drafting Tua @ 5, the best remaining OT or Edge @ 18 and 26. Then the best RB and another OL in the 2nd followed by a BPA (hoping for a S or TE) in the third.

But FA comes first, and we should get 2-3 great players there. which’ll change our draft needs.

    • D's avatar D says:

If we do take Tua at 5, then we HAVE to take OT at 18, i dont see any other way with that. We do have a year to groom and build around him in 2021, but to not get an OT i think would be a big mistake. I think we need DT and DE as well but we would need to take a shot at one of the better OT first, look for DT/DE at 26. Small exception made for if Kinlaw is still there at 18.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yep on the exception, but to me DE / Edge is way more neeeded than DT (this yr).
        Even RB is too.
We finished last in sacks, last in protecting the QB, and our QB was our rushing leader.

meaning we desperately need OT, DE, RB.

      • D's avatar D says:

My belief is it starts in the middle which forces teams to go outside, as well as clogging the middle of the field throwing lanes where your coverage is the weakest. It also gives you up the middle pass rush which makes the edge rushing more effective sionce the QB can escape the DE’s by moving forward in the pocket. I think it all starts with the DT’s

  72. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m still on the fence about Tagovailoa (practicing my spelling).
If he’s the next Mahomes or Deshaun or even Russ Wilson, then hell yeah.
If he’s the next Mariota, then NO.

There are several good ones coming out in 2021. and we could have the team ready.

But being @ 5 with Burrow going @ 1 and few teams competing with us for Tua,
it seems cosmic that we take the kid. In 2021 we’ll be picking in the 20s.

    • D's avatar D says:

You dont know what he will be until he is or isnt that. The people picking are the ones with the knowledge to know that so by virtue of them picking him makes him the right choice. No way to know how it all ends until it does, but im going with their knowledge, staff of people paid to do that job, doctors, etc to know over my opinion.

I think thats why he should have made it in over a guy like Edge. Not that Edge wasnt a great RB, i love the guy, but Zach out hearted him on the field. Edge over Zach, im sorry i just dont see it. Hell Edge over Zach or Tony Boselli was the wrong choice.

Man i love the guy, he was always my favorite fantasy back to grab, i think he deserves to be there, just not this round, not over Boselli or Zach.

  75. D's avatar D says:

The rest of the guys who got in its hard to argue much over, maybe Isaac Bruce or Hutchinson. Both of those guys are borderline, or at least very equivalent to Thomas or Boselli.as players.

Even though I am a big fan of Zach, I can’t say the other 5 don’t desserve to be in the HOF over Zach. It’s a packed class. I think he’ll get in next year.

  76. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Kinlaw is worth the pick (and I went to grad school @ Carolina where I was born, so I’m a homer for that guy), but so is Epenesa (and my wife was born in Iowa LOL).

DT is important as you say, but we do have Wilkins and Godchaux @ DT.
We have ____________ Harris? @ DE, meaning we have nothing.

    • D's avatar D says:

Well, im kind of in the mindset that we will at least add one in FA, but i also think that Charlton is a solid guy. Then on top of that where we flex LB’s in and out of the edge spot and we have Biegel, Van Ginkle, Equavoen, and Lacy who all rushed pretty well out of that spot. I would definitely add a DE early like day 1 or 2, i just would to add DT in the first if we can get Brown or Kinlaw. It really depends who is available to me.

Everyone is saying Miami will draft Tua, A team in front of Miami may have a great bargaining chip if another team wants to move ahead of miami, i wonder if detroit is spreading these rumors.

Can Tua hold up to the rigors of the NFL? so far he hasn’t been able to in college ball, some guys can be great but their bodies just cant hold up to the constant beating, see JJ Watt.

He may be a great pick but spending a number 5 on an often injured QB?

That said i think they will pick Tua at 5 if he’s there.

I heard Fitz is coming back for a final season at 8 mil, maybe Rosen and Tua battle it out for 2021.

    • D's avatar D says:

The injuries that he has had in college have not been the type that make you worried he cant hold up. Ankle injuries, which probably to me are the most concerning since i had them playing football and they do have long term effects, though mine never got evaluated by a Dr and i didnt get therapy or anything for it. The hip one though is an extremely freakish injury, Anyone get hit like that gets an injury so i dont see it as a “injury prone” situation.

So in my opinion he has had run of the mill injuries that lots of players have and have to get over and one that doesn’t matter your injury history, you get hurt there. If they coach him differently in the NFL how to do what Wilson does and kind of go limp when comes to taking hits and/or slide and avoid it, i think his injury history doesn’t bother me, If he is healthy, he’s worth taking at 5, and maybe even if he is still injured but the prognosis is good.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know, he seemed to be on that 1st round/2nd round line. I think if you want him, you have to take him in the 1st.

I like the potential of that Auburn CB also.

      • D's avatar D says:

One thing i have against Igbinohene is that Auburn really doesnt develop DB’s well. UF LSU Alabama a few of the pac 12 schoold, those are all DB universities. I dont know that i have ever seen any of the Auburn CB’s pan out in the NFL.Maybe he’s an exception to it and i have seen him play, he is talented, but he is also pretty inconsistent. Maybe 3rd-4th round, that would make him worth the risk, infact im leaning towards whatever comp pick we get from James being the target zone for him.

  80. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If we take Tua isn’t that basically a red shirt year? Seems doesn’t matter too much if we slot in for 2020 or 2010 QB at that point. Have to weigh Tua’s talent with the year on contract pretty much lost versus what will be there next draft and where we might be.

Sidney Crosby, for his part, has won two Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe, and has scored the deciding goal in a memorable Olympic Gold overtime game against team USA. • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They really don’t have the value in this draft to do that. They would have to trade future draft picks (and/or players) in order to get there. They have a late RD 1st, late RD 2nd, a late RD 3rd as well as two 3rd RD compensatory picks. They would have to surrender a lot of future assets. Personally, I hope they do it. Let them give up a huge haul to get him, we’ll find another QB and build the team the right way.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

NE doesn’t have a lot of ammo to make that trade without draining their next two drafts.
