2020 Season – Week 2 – Bills @ Dolphins

No pictures necessary. I couldn’t find half our defense on Sunday. It was the first game after a very limited preseason with no games and not nearly enough practice time. I need to temper my disappointment. Once again, the team that so many have written off after the numerous COVID-19 opt outs and the defections from the team in free agency, it all comes down to the Patriots can win with Belichick and just about anybody. I didn’t fear Cam Newton the QB, I feared Cam Newton the RB. Andy Dalton scares me more passing the football than Cam Newton, but Cam didn’t beat us passing, the run pass option beat us. Time of possession: Patriots 35 minutes – Dolphins 25 minutes. That partly explains the low offensive output although the officials near the end of the game made sure it stayed that way by not calling either defensive holding or what I thought was defensive pass interference in the end zone against TE Mike Gesicki by Patriots DB Joejuan Williams with 1:35 left. We probably weren’t going to win the game but you hate to have a turnover and lose possession on a play that was clearly a defensive foul. Anyway, the fact is we got beat. We got handled by a simple game plan that we had no answer for. We knew they were doing it, and we couldn’t stop it. All the defensive players we brought in may as well have been still playing for NE (Van Noy, Roberts), CLE (Ogbah), BUF (Lawson), PHI (Grugier-Hill) because they were invisible on Sunday. We need more from these guys.

Again, the good news is it’s only one game and we face a relatively similar threat this week in the Bills with Josh Allen. Allen has shredded us in the past running all over us so we do face a familiar issue, knowing what they can do and then stopping it. This offseason, Buffalo picked up WR Stefon Diggs and paired him with speedy former Ravens WR John Brown. Devin Singletary is OK, not a guy that really scares you and Zack Moss will be their goal line threat. Allen running scares me more than either Bills RB. If it seems like I’m ignoring our offensive ineptitude, I’m going to get to that. While our O-line starting 5 looked pretty good and played 100% of the offensive snaps, all 62, which is impressive. Jordan Howard played a very minor role and it was Myles Gaskin who ended up leading the Dolphins in rushing with 40 yards on 9 carries. Matt Breida was next with 22 years on 5 carries and Jordan Howard managed only 7 yards on 8 carries. Fitzpatrick was not great either, but why Preston Williams kept slipping on the artificial turf is confounding. It’s not like he needed to change to longer spikes, and the field was dry. Once again, the nagging injury bug has bitten WR Devante Parker. It is so frustrating because we all hoped he’d follow last season with an equal or likely better one, but if this hamstring hampers him, don’t count on it.

I’m not saying Tua has to play soon, but if the Dolphins offense doesn’t start putting points on the board, it’s inevitable that Tua, as long as he’s healthy should play. He’s the superstar in the making, and no reason to protect him for no reason. The O-line looks competent, so therefore if Fitz and the Dolphins offense don’t start showing some life, the Tua chapter of Dolphins football must begin. I’d like to consider game 1 as our first action since we had no preseason. A pass for a shoddy performance, but 1 game is all they get. If we open up at home getting run over by Josh Allen and the Bills it’s not going to look good for our season.

Christian Wilkins, last year’s 1st RD pick made his presence felt. We need 4-5 more guys on defense to do that each week. We need guys on offense to step up. Not sure if Parker is going to play or not and even if he does start, how long will he play and can he even be effective. I’d like to see Jordan Howard running hard. I’d like to see Breida catch a few balls out of the backfield and get upfield. I want to see Mike Gesicki continue his growth from last season and be like a George Kittle, Travis Kelce type of player. The O-line looks ready for prime time but the Bills may be a tougher challenge than the Patriots. We need to dominate the LOS and get some push for our backs and hopefully a successful run game will open up the passing game. I expect a conservative game plan, we don’t want to keep turning the ball over. If we win this game, I’m expecting a low scoring game, maybe a 17-16 game or 20-16. I’ll take either one!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

” The O-line looks competent” — how long has it been since you could type that? Loss stung, but that certainly took away some of the pain. Lot easier to get a good RB than a good OL.

Wilford Brimley represents an old guy from a nursing home in a movie about a fountain of youth, so when you say you’re older than him, you’re really old (like Mike). Saying something about Sean Connery being older is taking it out of context.

      • stangerx says:

Fair enough — even if for sure out of context was just encouraging Rock to think about himself as James Bond rather than Wilford Brimley in Cocoon And even if Brimley was young for the Cocoon role….. still older than Connery in his last Bond movie. Just trying to make my favorite Rock look at his age in a different way.

HIGH TENSION IN EDMONTON as the Lightning and the Islanders are tied 1-1 going into the 3rd period. The teams traded goals during the first half of the first period. AT ONE TIME The Bolts had out shot the NYI 25-6. But the Isles came back and had a clear edge the last few minutes of the 2nd period. BOTH teams have hit the post. Brayden Point is back playing for Tampa Bay, but it’s obvious he’s not 100%. NYI goalie Semyon Varlamov has been SPECTACULAR. I will stay up for the 3rd period. But if it goes O.T., I’ll have to get my ugly rest!!

    GOOOO BOLTS!!!

The pressure for game one of the Finals is on Dallas. They’ve had almost a week off to prepare for it! THEY ARE HEALTHY!! And they did an amazing job beating an outstanding Vegas team in just 5 games.

GAME ONE is tomorrow night, 8:00 PM, on NBC.
I WILL BE GLUED TO THE TUBE!! — GO BOLTS!!

    • steveccnv says:

It’s getting harder and harder to score in these games. One lucky bounce is all it takes sometimes, but when you outshoot your opponent by that much you should win. Glad they didn’t need a game 7. Would’ve hated to watch a Dallas vs NY final.

That was a tackle for a loss on a Cam on a run. His official stat sheet is no sacks now. Not that it matter much. He was very active.
    ——————————————————————-
It was a run, he clearly tucked the ball away and became a runner. The one for Wilkins, i mean i think i understand why they credited Van Ginkle, he was the one that got around to him and flushed him right to Wilkins who tackled him. IMO should maybe been more of a half sack for both, because there is no way to say that Van Ginkle gets him if Wilkins doesnt crush the pocket and get him before he did.

  21. D says:

You dont need stats to tell you if a DT made an impact, or atleast you can look at other stats. Like for example YPC. Generally it will be below 4 if they did a good job clogging things up. They might not make tackles, but they make it harder to get chunk yardage by RB’s. They might not get sacks, but others might, because they crushed the front of the pocket flushing the QB’s to the DE’s which is thhe way its designed to be, also usually comes with pressures as well. Still you just basically have to see them disrupting things. Thier stats sheet might be bland as hell and they still did a great job.

    • D says:

I said by RB’s too because you cant fault them for a QB scrambling for big yards, or some sort of scat back that generally ruins outside, but your core RB’s YPC a lot of times tells you they did a good job.

  22. D says:

I didnt even watch football last night i completely forgot it was one. Anyone watch the game?

  23. steveccnv says:

Wilkens was beating double teams and was quick on his feet, he looked great.

Allen runs, but I wouldn’t call him an RPO QB, so our D should at least have a better chance to play it straight up. The key will be containment.

There should be ints for the taking, as long as every just does their job.

This us a winnable game, but the O needs to show up early and Parker and Preston need to be a factor.

Damn Burrow lit it up. His recievers arent even very god and he was getting it spread around so much it didnt matter a lot. Impressive game for him even though it was a loss. Mayfield’s stats are meh, but he was helped out a lot by Chubb it seems.

    • steveccnv says:

37-61 for just over 300 yards at about 5 yards per pass, and 2 late TDs likely against a soft pass D is lighting it up?

I didn’t watch the game, but those stats don’t scream lighting it up.

What did you see that made you say that?

  29. stangerx says:

Bills favored by 5 1/2, but game is at Hard Rock. Pretty much the same line as last week at Foxoboro. People wondering if we can handle a running QB ….. or are the Bills considered better?

Stolen from BuffaloRumblings…. one of their fan sites. Would hate to guard a guy who has 5 inches and 40 pounds on me.
    —————-
    WR Preston Williams
With DeVante Parker (limited with a hamstring injury) sure to draw Tre’Davious White if he plays, that will leave the big, physical Williams to be marked by Levi Wallace. Parker is five inches taller than Wallace, and he outweighs him by nearly 40 lbs. In his career, Wallace has struggled with bigger receivers, and given that Buffalo’s other options are smaller than Wallace, it’s probably going to turn into a situation where Fitzpatrick finds Wallace, sees who he’s guarding, and throws it to that wide receiver more often than not.

    • D says:

Thats actually pretty good analysis, i think we match up good against their secondary, out side of White who can shut down just about anyone. Parker against White would have been better for us since he is a better contested catch receiver and Fitz could have just high-pointed it and we could have had receptions despite being put on an island.

I dont think Williams isnt talented and cant give White issues, but he isnt as experience, so id definately say White has the advantage. The rest of our receivers should be able to get open.

I think we will have a tough time with TE in the receiving game, though with Edmunds out that seems like a better chance for us, and running game is going to be tough because buffalo always has a good front 7.

So i think we need to play a lot better on D, to keep Allen and the backs at bay. I think our secondary can do good job against most anyone but these guys in particular and then try to beat them in the air, while still threatening them on the ground. Not a easy matchup but i think its a pretty even one.

      • D says:

Oh and im of the thought that Devante wont play. I just cant see him being 100% after a hammy in the previous weeks game and i really hope they dont rush him back.

      • stangerx says:

Know you are just calling it like you see it, but that write-up sure does make me want Parker in there. There’s an advantage to two big wide outs, especially in match-ups.

    ——————————————————————————-
Lack of elite receivers to use, down big but pulled them back into shot for winning. I dont know it was a soft pass D, uaully your in nickle with a lead. Spread it out so that means he was going through read progressing and finding the right guy. 300 yeards 3 TD’s is good no matter the situation.

    • D says:

Those are all good signs from a Rookie on his second game.

    • D says:

If i see Tua have that as his second start ill be very pleased.

    • D says:

Also that 61 shows you he did most of it own his own, there was no balance to the offense so he did his part, team just didnt do much around him.

    • steveccnv says:

Didn’t Bortles do that one year with the Jags? Then the next year when they had a D he couldn’t do anything. I wouldn’t put too much into what a QB does in garbage time.

At least he doesn’t seem to be a flop.

      • D says:

Im not projecting long term success off of one game, i just think it was a good game. The pass D gets tougher in garbage time, its the run game that generally gets less resistance so you can pop off a 10 yarder and bump your averages and totals up because no one is focusing on the run, other than to keep it in front of them. I think its impressive that he did a lot late, because like i said they knew he would have to do it all.

      • D says:

Id also like to mention, both of us are arguing and it seems neither of us saw the game lol

  35. Randy says:

I watched the game last night. Cincy was playing catch-up, so Burrow threw a lot. I thought he looked good. He showed good poise. He moved well. He took short open throws instead of forcing it downfield or making stupid, low percentage throws. He looked like a guy who belongs. When I watch Mayfield, he always strikes me as a guy who’s just barely keeping up. Burrow looked in control.
    ***
As for Parker, if he’s practicing fully, he’s likely to play. Ya don’t usually have guys practice fully if they aren’t ready to play. If he’s practicing in a limited way, then maybe he doesn’t start.

    • stangerx says:

Gotta believe Parker will play as well. Sorta of funny how we used to rank on him but now he is the biggest stud on the O. Still injured though. πŸ™‚

    ————————————————-
I want for that too, but there is a difference in wanting for it and pretty much knowing its not as likely and probably not for the best. Have him for another half of a game or have him for the rest of the year.

  37. Tim Knight says:

If Parker was able to practice then he can play. That’s how it works.

    • Tim Knight says:

I thought Parker participated in full in practice today but I see now he was limited. It will probably be a game day decision and he could be inactive.

They were wrong 160 years ago and they are wrong today. People like RBG kept the promise of America alive to those who were scorned by the plantation philosophy of the old Confederacy. The battle is not yet fully won. But thanks to the likes of RBG, we are closer to what our Founding Fathers thought would be the American dream.

    FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
A local commentator noted that the LIGHTNING sold out EVERY home game last season (just over 19,200 seats in Amalie Arena). FLORIDA’s TWO MLB FRANCHISES COMBINED averaged UNDER 19,000 per home game last season! WILL this give Miami and Tampa Bay AN ADVANTAGE if they BOTH play in empty stadiums in the PLAYOFFS??? They are certainly used to playing in virtually empty ball parks!

    • olddolphan says:

STEVE: SAW YOUR comment about how low scoring the NHL has become. So I did a little research. I went back to the 1981-82 NHL season. That was the year Wayne Gretzky scored 92 goals and 124 assists for 216 points, a level that has not even been approached THIS CENTURY!!

FIRST, some history. Back when I was a kid in Canada, most NHL players were under 6 feet tall. The average player was, maybe, 5’8″ to 5’11 inches and 155 to 175 pounds. NOW, players who are 6’2″ or taller and well over 200 pounds are a dime a dozen. But as the players have gotten larger, the size of the goal has REMAINED THE SAME (4 feet high and 6 feet wide, I think).

Back to the 1981-82 season. The Edmonton Oilers AVERAGED 5.21 goals per game during that 80 game schedule. NOW, the top teams average just a hair over 3 goals per game, with almost half the teams averaging UNDER 3 goals per game!! WOW!!!!

MY SOLUTION is a simple one. INCREASE the height of the goal from 4 feet to 4 feet 6 inches; and increase the width from 6 feet to 6 feet 6 inches. Since PLAYERS today are AT LEAST 10% bigger that they were in the 1950’s, it makes sense to increase the size of the goal by about the same percentage.

The first logical step would be to implement these changes at the minor league level. Hopefully, the NHL board of governors will approve such a move and get the great game of hockey back to the scoring levels of the 1980’s.

      • steveccnv says:

I agree, many of the goalies are so large they fill up most of the net, when in a normal position. On many shots they don’t even react to the puck, but since they cover so much of the net, they still stop 90% of these shots.

Their vulnerability seems to be up high. Ovechkin is great, because he can consistently hit the top outside corner.

VGK changed over to Lehner I believe, because of his size. Fleury is more athletic, but smaller.

Everyone watches the weather channel but we did not see the storm ramping up as strong as it got nor did people around here see the eye coming this far east. The eastern eye wall ripped right though Gulf Shores and West Pensacola (where I live) and city of Pensacola. Still no power and everyone fighting for gas where they can get it. All 3 of our vehicles got no damage. No flooding in my neighborhood. Did lose shingles down to bare wood on 1/4 of back side of house. Got it all tarped up. Little water damage and it was over the back porch and garage. Water table got so high my pool liner is toast but we only had another 5 weeks or so to swim anyway. I am actually headed to work this afternoon. Boss has generator set up and use hotspot for internet. Hope it is only another day or two and we get power. Thanks for the concerns! What a day! Herd won, always good thing. Went on a Jeep ride with my son in this fundraiser thing, never done that before, 6 hours on these dirt roads, up mountains, thru creeks, mud, dust… it was a blast. Caught part of the Herd game on radio. Wooohoooo!!

First half UM game has been very poorly officiated. The U with 2 bad personal fouls called, then a missed one on Louisville hit OB, and a roughing the punter called as incidental, that should’ve been 15 yards and a 1st down.

Watching ESPN pregame, they’re talking about the Cowboys and bring up the league wide stat of 26% 3rd down conversion rate on 7+ yards, compared to 52% for 3-6 yards, saying they need to get to 3rd and short more often.

I think this is BS, sure you don’t want to be in 3rd and long, but if you play to be in 3rd and less than 7 by running on first and second down you’re only converting half the time. With that said how can you sustain a drive?

What I’m trying to say is ESPN is trying to over simplify a complex situation. When we had Marino and we ran on 1st and 2nd down we weren’t very successful.

Last year we couldn’t run for shit, but scored a lot of points the second half of the year. Why, because we used on average 2 passing downs per series to get the first down.

I want to run the ball well, but I don’t want to run on 2nd and long, if you gain nothing on 1st and 10 or worse we need to mostly throw on 2nd down.

  72. steveccnv says:

    I hope I’m 0-2 on my predictions. Buffalo 45 Miami 3.
