Week 4 – Seahawks @ Dolphins

Six very important players in this upcoming matchup between the Miami Dolphins who are hosting the red hot Seattle Seahawks. There are more of course, more players who will have an impact on this game because ultimately 22 players are o0n the field at any given time. If our defensive line can’t harass QB Russell Wilson it will make the containment of WR’s Tyler Lockett and D.J. Metcalf very difficult. Even pressure alone doesn’t cut it with Russell Wilson, it’s containment as well. His escapability and ability to keep plays alive is one of his best assets, so initial pressure will be good, but not allowing him to scramble and find room to escape and keep the play going will be key. This is where Wilson separates himself from most QB’s, he’s one of the very best. Defending Tyler Lockett who is a very fast and savvy WR is difficult enough as it is, and same for physically imposing D.J. Metcalf, who by the way I was very wrong about. Thus far, Russell Wilson has been nearly the perfect QB. He’s completed nearlym 77% of his passes for 925 yards and 14 TD’s against one INT. His TD% is an absurd 13.6%. If not for Pat Mahomes, he would be considered the NFL’s best in 2020.

The Miami front 7 will also have their hands full, because not only can the Seahawks throw it but they have 2 backs that can run well too. Chris Carson leads their rushing attack with a modest 157 yards on 37 carries and Carlos Hyde can grind out a game too. Russell Wilson is actually 2nd on the team at the moment in rushing with 90 yards on 14 carries. He can do it all! The Seattle O-line has been built with a few retreads like LT Duane Brown (HOU), LG Mike Iupati (ARZ) and RT Brandon Shell (NYJ). C Ethan Pocic and RG Damien Lewis are the only Seattle draftees. They’re not a great line, but Russell Wilson makes them better than they are. Wilkins, Ogbah, Godchaux, Lawson, Van Noy, Sieler, Davis, Van Noy, Van Ginkel, Baker, Roberts and Grugier-Hill are all going to need to be disciplined and not lose containment. Flushing Wilson is good but bringing him down or forcing him to get rid of the ball before he wants to is important.

On offense, if we can duplicate what we did last week to Jacksonville we should be in this game. Seattle’s defense is a little better and Pete Carroll is a much better coach. All Pro S Jamal Adams is used all over the place, coverage, playing the run and rushing the passer and he does it all well. Not a big name defense but they have a trio of LB’s who get it done and tackle well in Wagner, Wright and Barton. No longer the “Legion of Boom”, Adams adds a little pop back into that secondary. We have extra time to prepare for this one which can only help us. It will give WR DeVante Parker a couple of extra days to rest that hamstring and give RB Myles Gaskin a breather after 22 carries Thursday night, far more than he’s had since his college days. It’s only 3 games in and you never know if things will change, but Gaskin looks like the real deal. We still have Jordan Howard and Matt Breida, but for now they seem like role players, Howard the goal line threat and Breida the change of pace. Gesicki will have a more difficult matchup this week and last week he only caught one pass. Parker gutted it out last week as opposed to sitting the game out like he would in the past and the team needs him. At some point this season we may see Lynn Bowden and Malcolm Perry but I think it might be a while. Parker, Williams, Ford and Gesicki and Gaskin are the main contributors.

If at the end of the day, Russell Wilson doesn’t have 3 or more TD’s and Carson and Hyde don’t have well over 100 yards combined I think we have a shot in this one. I don’t know if we’re capable of keeping the ball out of Wilson’s hands but I would like us to do that. Long drives mixing rushing with Gaskin and passing to the previously mentioned guys ending up in with TD’s on the board can make us a real spoiler upset. The line is 6.5 for the bad guys. We have our work cut out for us but a nice effort like last weeks win could keep us in this one.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

    Stanger,

You either score TDs against explosive teams or you end up with the L. Both teams have scored three times. We’re down by 8.

Fitz cost us the game again even though the defense has been abused at times. Guy is just an int machine. I don’t even consider this eventual TD drive a real drive. The game is over, padding stats just makes some believe we are closer than we are. Time for Tua

Also, want to give a shout out to Ken and others who thought Herbert was going to be good. I was obviously wrong and you guys seem right. He’s not done a lot the past 15 minutes but he’s looked great so far this year.

We played one of the best teams in the league and gave them a game. Yeah you want the movie win, but that’s pretty cool.

  77. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – we did play them tough but the lack of TD’s is glaring. Instead of us saying we played them tough, we could have been saying we beat a tough team. Can’t go up and down the field all day and keep coming away with 3. For better or worse I think it’s getting close to Tua time

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If we had everything figured out we would be one of the best teams in the league. Same game against the Jets and I throw a hissy fit.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hear ya Stanger but the Seahawks don’t have the defense, we let them off the hook. We either got 3 or turned it over near and in the red zone. Our defense did their job against a tough offense, but not pushing it into the endzone was our downfall. I know it’s the first year of roster building but I’m definitely thinking Tua might be the spark that turns us around. You see young guns getting it done all over, why not us? It seems more than safe enough as far as the O-line is concerned, it’s inevitable that Tua gets in soon. I’d say Week 6 against the Broncos at home will be the start for Tua.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We still gave up 31 points. And am thinking Tua will be playing this year as well. Guessing after the bye week btwn the 2 Jets games though.

    Tua time

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Yep! Do it while the team is healthy and the O-line is playing relatively well.
Nothing to lose. Houston is getting us a shot at Lawerence anyway..LOL

  79. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Can’t believe the Texans are 0-4. They’ve had a tough schedule but I thought they should be able to beat MIN.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And Carolina and Cincinnati won, so there’s a couple of teams that may be challenging our pick and the Houston pick.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our young team competes but there are still improvements that need to be made on both sides of the ball. The bottom line is we have to make more big plays than just hanging in there. Needed a TD or two instead of 5 FGs, and there are still a few breakdowns in run and pass defense. But I see the progress and Tua is waiting in the wings.

  81. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

We never take shots down the field anymore. Every pass is 5-12 yards. Need to give our tall guys a chance to make plays. Seems like Parker is only running slants or crossing routes.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Besides having Gesicki in FF and being frustrated by his lack of production, why is he only getting 2 or 3 targets a game? Throw him the fucking ball, and give him a chance to catch it too, the three targets I saw he had no chance to get the ball, not allowing him to use his size advantage and leaping ability.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I was thinking the same thing. And I think it time for Tua. Next 5 games are winnable.

  82. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Mike E. & SON-OF-A-SON; I AGREE WITH BOTH OF YOU. Fitzy can get us close to the Buffalos and the Seattles of the world. But he can’t get us to the Promised Land. Maybe TUA can’t get us there, either. BUT WE NEED TO FIND OUT. The BEST WAY to find out is to tell him the HE’s the starting quarterback for MOST, if not ALL, of the games left on this season’s schedule. IN MY HEART OF HEARTS, I BELIEVE Tua’s a championship caliber quarterback. Others doubtless will disagree. But even the doubters have to admit we won’t find out for sure while Tua’s sitting on his backside!! In the words of Dickie Vitale “He’s a PT player baybeeee!! –Give him a chance to PROVE IT!!”
    ——————-
I WAS STUNNED when UCF lost to Tulsa last night. I STILL think they’re at least a Top 25 team, and, possibly, much better than THAT!! Meanwhile, my FAU OWLS looked like shit beating a not-so-good Charlotte team in a squeaker. FAU will be very lucky to win 5 games after going11-3 last season!! We’re not even close to being at the same level as HERD’s Marshall team!

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

UCF was bad on defense in the second half, it was ugly.

Yeah put Tua in let’s get out of neutral. If we’re gonna lose games may as well get him some experience at the very least. But if we start pulling big plays out of our ass we might pull off a string wins and be viable.

  87. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This team isn’t going to make the playoffs, so its gotta be Tua time now. SFs D is good, so maybe wait 1 more week, otherwise put him in coach he’s ready to play.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tough trip across the country. That’s why I said at home against the Broncos Week 6

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MIKE E.; The 48ers are a beat-up football team. I think we have a shot against them. Most will say we have little or no chance against SF. Diminished expectations may lift a little of the pressure off of Tua. But if we win with Tua, we’ll be HEAVILY favored against the Broncos. And our drive for the last playoff spot THIS YEAR will have begun!!

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

One thing I noticed today is that Solomon Kindley is almost always the first guy there to pick up his RB. Gotta love this guy!

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

He’s down field looking to hit someone on pass plays most times too.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Kindley is the steal. Action Jackson seems a good pick. Jury is out on Hunt…. didn’t like that he was out of the race for starting real quick.

  89. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Some people have real serious problems.
    ———————————-
A seventh-grade history teacher, who is Latino, was stunned when police in Torrance, California arrived at his home and asked the identity of the white baby that he was holding moments earlier, he told the Los Angeles Times. The toddler, Abel Mata’s 2-year-old grandson, appears white and his neighbor had called 911 to report that he kidnapped the child.

When officers arrived to investigate, Mata’s neighbor, a white woman, came out of her home wielding a samurai sword and yelled that he was the abductor.

Iggy sucks. Hunt cant start and tua is still on the sideline. We gave up a 2nd for rosen and cut him. We may have made a huge mistake not taking herbert with that 5th pick. Ive all but lost confidence in greir and flores

Somebody else is seeing Flores is not getting it done. I mentioned this before the game. I’m not giving up on him, but doesn’t get a free pass.

  90. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Stanger I think it is time for Tua because I think Fitz is bad. Rather at 1-3 we are going nowhere so let Tua start getting reps and develop him for the future

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – I think they want someone with experience on that right side. I don’t think that’s a knock on Hunt. Think about it, Davis is helping Kindley out on that side, even if he’s not the best RT, he knows what he’s looking at when the D lines up.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If Hunt was blowing people up he’d be playing….. least how I see it. Might also mean if a vet RG was there that Hunt would be playing though. But Kindley seems special.

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – Yeah, the Niners are missing so many players but it’s a long trip to SF. Give the rookie an easier week to take the reins, play in front of his home crowd. JMO, better week to do it, IF we’re actually going to pull that trigger.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MIKE E; Tua’s from Hawaii. He’s used to making REALLY long trips, as are his parents. In fact, a flight from Miami to SF (which I made for SB XIX) will be a breeze for him! He’s a VERY YOUNG MAN–unlike me and a few others on this board.

  93. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

1st quarter was all about the refs sucking ass. Poor call on the illegal forward pass (Flores clearly has challenge issues, should have been an easy decision to throw that flag), then a poor call on the Flowers holding, then a missed call on the illegal hit on Gaskin. All of those were drive enders.

The broadcast was awful. I’m not sure if anyone caught it, but there were 3 or 4 times they had the wrong down and distance on the field or the banner. And Quinn/ Stockton were absolutely terrible.

Fitz stunk today. If he was good Fitz, we’d have had a couple of TDs today. He had a few good throws, but more often was off target, and numerous times didn’t see open receivers. He really should have been picked 4 times instead of 2.

The way Howard is playing (slow and ineffective), I’m fine giving all the carries to Gaskin and Breida.

Gaskin consistently gets a yard or two more than he should. Conversely, all year our defense consistently gives up at least a yard or two more on runs than they should.

Imnotgoinatryandspellhisname really blew it with that end of the 1st half play. He dropped off his coverage to follow the guy underneath and left a wide open WR for a big play. Terrible situational awareness. Rookie mistake and he’s been thrown into the fire, but it’d be nice to see him start to make some impact plays, instead of consistently giving up impact plays.

I really felt we didn’t play very well today, and with that said, we were still in the game half way through the 4th. If we punch in a TD or two, we had a real shot to win even not playing our best. We haven’t come close to seeing the ceiling on this team yet. Lets get Tua in there sometime in the next few weeks.

  94. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Parker is still always injured, but since the middle of last year he has figured out how to play with nagging injuries and still be effective. IMO it’s official, he’s a stud.

Williams has been a bit less effective than I expected, but he was raw coming out and still coming back from injury. Fingers crossed he will continue to improve.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Parker is the guy we always hoped he’d be right now. That’s fantastic. Isaiah Ford is looking very good as well, like the way he plays. Williams doesn’t seem to offer much more than a big target, doesn’t look especially slick while running routes but that’s OK. Gesicki is the guy that should be getting fed more and that’s bugging me.
