Week 15 – Patriots @ Dolphins

This is what the season has come down to, Week 15, Brian Flores’s Dolphins at 8-5 fighting for a playoff spot against Bill Belichick’s Patriots. Earlier this year, the Patriots embarrassed the Dolphins 21-11 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Cam Newton and the RPO time and time again fooled the Dolphins defenders to the tune of 15 carries for 75 yards and 2 TD’s by the NE QB. Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was abysmal that day completing 23 passes of 30 attempts, except 3 of those completions were to NE defenders. We just looked unprepared and overmatched by Bill Belichick’s gameplan and Cam Newton’s execution of it. We guessed wrong so many times on that RPO and it was one of the more frustrating things to watch. Brian Flores will have to design a better gameplan this time.

So many things have changed since then. Ryan Fitzpatrick is no longer our starting QB, it’s now rookie Tua Tagovailoa. Neither Jordan Howard (Released) or Myles Gaskin (COVID-19 list) are playing this Sunday. RB DeAndre Washington will get the start and returning to the backfield is Matt Breida. Salvon Ahmed is a longshot to play as well. WR DeVante Parker is limited with a hamstring injury but will likely play, but Preston Williams who played Week 1 is still out. TE Mike Gesicki is also likely out with a dislocated shoulder. Patriots WR Julian Edelman is on IR/R which means he’s eligible to play should the Patriots decide to activate him but this is his first week of practice and he’s been out since October 31st when he elected to have surgery on his knee. He is unlikely to play.

Cam Newton is tenuously holding on to the starting job in NE as he has struggled in his last 3 games throwing for only 272 yards with 1 TD against 3 INT’s and that includes the 45-0 walloping of the LA Chargers. He did rush for 2 TD’s against the woeful Chargers. If I know Brian Flores, Cam Newton won’t be running all over us Sunday. We’ll be on him like white on rice. The Patriots are on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs concerned, even if they win out 9-7 is not going to be good enough to get in in the fiercely competitive AFC. There are 4 division winners and 3 wild card berths. The Chiefs are the AFC West Champs at 12-1. The Colts and Titans are tied at 9-4 in the AFC South and the Steelers (11-2) are holding a 2 game edge on the Browns (9-4) who are now surging and looking to grab the AFC North division crown. Our Dolphins currently have the #7 seed at 8-5. 10 wins is the only chance the Dolphins will be in the playoffs, so in essence, our last 3 games are essentially playoff games. First one is at home against a very familiar opponent.

There are always ebbs and flows in the long 16 game season, and despite the loss last week, I think our team is performing very well. The injuries are adding up, and I’d really love to have Kyle Van Noy back this week along with good Ole Bobby McCain. I’d love to have thumper Elandon Roberts back at LB too, he was missed last week. I wouldn’t mind having Ereck Flowers back either but only if he’s ready, I think Mt. Kindley has done well in his stead. It’s possible that Isaiah Ford could suit up for us this week, depending on how Jakeem Grant is doing with his hamstring injury. Lynn Bowden kind of exploded last week getting lots of action. Bowden was targeted 9 times and caught 7 passes for 82 yards. He also rushed once and the previous week against Cincy, Bowden caught 4 for 41 yards. Safe to say he’s part of the offense now.

As the pictures above portray, this game is the Mentor against his former Student. I don’t have to explain to all of you that Bill Belichick has always been a great coach and a master of making adjustments before the game, during the game and after the game. People will say look at him w/o Brady but Belichick created Brady. He tailored the offense to work with Tom Brady’s strengths and mask his weaknesses. In my opinion, only people who don’t really understand the game look at Tom Brady with his 30 TD’s and 11 INT’s and think that Brady was the reason for the Patriots success. The Buccaneers are just loaded with talent, there is no comparing the Bucs roster with the Patriots roster. RB Ronald Jones has come of age having his best season. WR’s Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown along with TE’s Rob Gronkowski, O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate. The Patriots, besides having an inept passer at QB (Newton), the Patriots WR’s are Jakobi Myers, N’Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd along with RB’s Damien Harris and James White. The Bucs also have loads more talent on defense with LB’s Lavonte David and Devin White, DE’s Shaq Barrett and JPP and DT Ndamukong Suh. Folks, it’s not even close. I’m loathe to agree with Belichick himself when he said they sold out to win previous years and have left the cupboard somewhat bare this season. I’d say he speaks true.

My point in the last paragraph is we are basically trying to knock off Bill Belichick’s team, and although they might be outmanned, they have the football mind to keep them in this one. We have a disciple of that football mind, and if there was ever a time for the student to teach the teacher something, this is it. We need a strong gameplan from Brian Flores. We can’t allow Cam Newton and the RPO or whatever they employ to beat us. We have to be the better team Sunday. The NFL season is a game of attrition, no one knows who will be available at the end of the season and if we make it far enough that we’re in the playoffs, maybe we get Preston Williams back, Gaskin with fresh legs, maybe we get TE Mike Gesicki back as well. We MUST win this game, and then we move on to the next playoff game against the Las Vegas Raiders in their new house. Win this one, I like our chances against Da Raiders.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Awesome write but I think you give Brady less credit than he deserves. He’s frick’n 43 and a starting QB in the NFL. On a team looking for the playoffs too. Don’t think that’s ever been done before.

And if the evil genius’s team sold out the future for chances at the ring before….. was the evil genius who mostly made the decisions on that. Hard to complain about it now.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think he was complaining, I think he logically explained what happened. He doesn’t need excuses, he’s been the best coach over the last 20 years without question.

This is why our offense blows!

6:o2 mark of the video, Tua has Parker wide open, screws around and takes a sack! he’s got to get to his progressions quicker.
7:59 mark, looks like the same shitty throw we went over vs the Bengals except it was to the opposite side, threw short and behind his wr who was wide open for a TD with a properly thrown ball
8:45 mark, he has a wide open wr right in the middle of the field! instead he gets hammered for a safety!
    10:54 mark Kindley gets abused!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Looking like we might score the most points in 20 years, and if not should be 2nd — 4th most. Do agree that O needs some work, and assume we’ll mainly be doing O in the off season.

What do you figure needs to be done? And they ain’t getting rid of Tua, though agreed with you before that picking up a say 2nd or 3rd round QB is a good idea.

BOTH the guys on PTI picking The Pats to beat Miami straight-up! (Miami now up to a 3 point favorite at home). KORNHOLEHEISER and WILBORN say New England b/c Belicheat is 21-5 vs. rookie QB’s. HOW many of those 21 were named Tua??? And how has Belicheat fared in Miami the last several years?? –NOT RELEVANT to the twin meatheads!!!
    ———————-
Here’s what is relevant. Cam (FIG) Newton has thrown either “ZERO” or “ONE” TD pass the last 16 games he’s started. ALSO, Miami figures to get some (most?) of their walking wounded back for this game. And the Dolphins have a realistic shot at the playoffs IF they win this game. The Patsies have virtually NO CHANCE and THEY KNOW IT.
    ———————-
HOW BAD DOES COACH “FLO” WANT THIS GAME??? Probably as bad as Shula wanted to beat the Bears in that 1985 Showdown in the historic Orange Bowl Dec. 2nd, 1985!!
    ———————-
THEN, there’s the THE THROW_BACK UNIFORM issue. Under a virtually IMPOSSIBLE set of circumstances, “FLO’s BOYZ” nearly engineered a comeback from a 30-10 deficit to a mind-boggling victory in the 4th quarter last Sunday!! And Fig Newton is no Patrick Mahomes, is he???
Miami scored 27 points last week vs. the Chiefs, playing with a ton of back-ups and nobodies. — 27 points WILL GET THE JOB DONE THIS SUNDAY.

My wife got covid vaccination today. 1,100 medical professionals in Corpus Christi in the last 3 days. The mood at our clinic has improved significantly. Just waiting for the nurses and other staff to get their turns. We’ve had 3 people already who got so sick they haven’t been able to return to work after several months (1 is likely permanently disabled at age 32).

There’s a ways to go, but after 20+ patients a day who lie about exposures (and even about being positive until AFTER the visit so they can go to an exam room instead of a curbside in our tent) … and then a rash of refusals to be tested the week before Thanksgiving because “if positive we won’t be able to travel” (smh)… I hope this kind of idiocy won’t continue into the vaccination phase.

Herd immunity is not achieved by letting everyone get sick… its achieved by successful vaccination programs.

Not that Geisicki doesn’t elevate our receiving core, but he doesn’t kill it not being out there. It takes a big target away in the red-zone but we have plenty of those.

It is a home game. Won’t be super hot for Sunday, but up here in NE its been a pretty cold week with a foot of snow on the ground. So even 77 degrees and high humidity will hopefully feel pretty hot after a quarter or two for the Pats. Every little bit helps.

The way I see it, Sunday is the start of the playoffs for the Dolphins. They’re playing teams all in the in the hunt, so every team is going to be bringing it 200% (except maybe Buffalo if they don’t have anything to gain by that point – but lets assume they will have something to gain). Any loss will severely hurt or doom any playoff chance. So there you go. Playoffs start Sunday – first round opponent is the Pats.

My line of thinking is id rather not have him there if it might cost us having him for the last two or even last one. I have a feeling 2 and 3 are going to be a lot tighter than this next one and i think there might be more on the line on those games too.

Pats beat us by 10 first time around. That was our biggest loss of the season.

Sucks to lose but would have given you 50-1 at the start of the year that we’d have a loss by more than that. Competitive we are.

  54. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – I’d also rather have Gesicki the last 2 games instead of him aggravating his injury and missing those 2 games. I was just saying I’d like him for all of them. He makes easy opportunities for the other TE because they usually double him.

    • twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

Maybe have him in the ‘break glass in case of emergency’ enclosure (active roster) on the sidelines for use in the second half – in case we need to throw everything at them to win?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Another version of that would be just use him in red zone situations. Assume with his shoulder blocking would be the biggest risk.

      • D's avatar D says:

the only downside to that is not having another active player that might be needed at another spot, but i dont see the harm in that. If i were to use him and he were not completely over it (and i dont see how he can go from a dislocated shoulder to fully healed that fast) id only bring him in on plays where he gives us a much needed target. It would somewhat telegraph our play because if we did that they would know that this is likely a pass play, not necessarily he was the intended target but that its a passing down. could use him as a decoy split out wide, or something but i just hope whatever it is, we dont rush him back out there and lose him for the rest of the season and possible for post season if we make it.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think they’d take up a roster spot for him if he can’t play more than just a few snaps, but hey, who knows?

Only worry i have with seeing a player go on the Covid list is the long term effects of it, i mean i know several people, young healthy people who cannot shake the long term effects of covid. So decreased lung capacity, chronic fatigue, etc that could kill a guys career or at very least put him out for significantly more than two weeks.

FAU will try to restore some C-USA pride when they take on Memphis in a Bowl game on Wednesday. FAU is 4-0 all time in Bowl games, including a 52-28 blowout win over 15th ranked (at that time) SMU last December. Lane Kiffin’s last FAU team ended up 27th ranked in the AP poll, 2 spots ahead of the USC Rubbers. Speaking of the Trojans, they lost last night to a so-so Oregon team in the PAC-12 title game. Once, again, the PAC-12 will have NO TEAMS ranked in the Top-15. Meanwhile, the AAC has 9th ranked undefeated Cincinnati, and the Sun Belt boasts 12th ranked Coastal Carolina, plus nationally ranked Louisiana and App State. NOT SAYING the SunBelt should be a Power 5 league, just saying the PAC-12’s claim as a Power 5 League has NOT been proven on the field for the last few years. Perhaps they need to bring in teams like BYU, San Diego State and, even Boise State to bump up its power ranking claims. As is, the PAC-12 is hurting.

GOT DIRECTV to drop $110 from my bill for failing to deliver the entire DIRECTV packag I had paid for and failure to deliver a CBS channel. They shipped me a special antenna which can pull in over 100 out-of-market channels while they carry on their war with the local owner of the CBS affiliate. Those DIRECTV subscribers who DO NOT have this antenna currently receive no football games currently carried by CBS. This includes the Super Bowl. This town would go apeshit if Tom-boy led the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl and THEY COULD NOT SEE IT ON TV!!

Not to worry. The Bucs won’t be there!

I am sticking with my theme of rooting against Houston again this week. Even though the colts are above us in the standings. I am hoping for the Giants to beat the Browns, for Denver to beat Buffalo and for a crazy loss by the Ravens against Jax (LOL) LA already did me the solid of beating Los Vegas and injuring their QB, so thanks.

We really want the Broncos to hand Buff a loss this week, or at least the Pats to next week. If we handle our business the Division is still within reach if either Denver or NE hand them a loss. (this of course includes the premise that we beat them in the final game, that is part of handling our business)

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pretty sure Buf has to lose out for use to have a chance at the division. I’m rooting for them to have nothing to play for in the last game against us.

  78. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

My point prediction this week was very “Scientific” LOL (at least to a stoner) I took the two teams PF and PA and divided by the number of games played to come up with a weekly average. I then added the PF of the first team to the PA of the second team and divided by 2 to come up with the average of what they took and what they were given. I then rounded down (cut off at the decimal point) because of the defensive prowess of each team.

    See, all very Scientificy

Going to watch Alabama/FU tonight, of course, but also going to catch some of Tulsa/Cincinnati. I want to see some game action on Tulsa LB Zaven Collins and a couple other players. In one draft guru’s breakdown on Zaven Collins, he called him a Kyle Van Noy 2.0.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was looking at some prospects that fit what we might be looking for and Zaven Collins was one of them. I said to myself he might be another Van Noy. 🙂

This Northwestern defense, so far in this game, reminds me of hoe Fins D plays: gives up yardage between the 30 yard lines then tightens up with QB pressure and good pass coverage inside its own 30.

Good summary of what could happen, but only part that matters to me is if we win out we are in. Would be different if the other teams in the running didn’t have easy games left.
