Week 15 – Patriots @ Dolphins

This is what the season has come down to, Week 15, Brian Flores’s Dolphins at 8-5 fighting for a playoff spot against Bill Belichick’s Patriots. Earlier this year, the Patriots embarrassed the Dolphins 21-11 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Cam Newton and the RPO time and time again fooled the Dolphins defenders to the tune of 15 carries for 75 yards and 2 TD’s by the NE QB. Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was abysmal that day completing 23 passes of 30 attempts, except 3 of those completions were to NE defenders. We just looked unprepared and overmatched by Bill Belichick’s gameplan and Cam Newton’s execution of it. We guessed wrong so many times on that RPO and it was one of the more frustrating things to watch. Brian Flores will have to design a better gameplan this time.

So many things have changed since then. Ryan Fitzpatrick is no longer our starting QB, it’s now rookie Tua Tagovailoa. Neither Jordan Howard (Released) or Myles Gaskin (COVID-19 list) are playing this Sunday. RB DeAndre Washington will get the start and returning to the backfield is Matt Breida. Salvon Ahmed is a longshot to play as well. WR DeVante Parker is limited with a hamstring injury but will likely play, but Preston Williams who played Week 1 is still out. TE Mike Gesicki is also likely out with a dislocated shoulder. Patriots WR Julian Edelman is on IR/R which means he’s eligible to play should the Patriots decide to activate him but this is his first week of practice and he’s been out since October 31st when he elected to have surgery on his knee. He is unlikely to play.

Cam Newton is tenuously holding on to the starting job in NE as he has struggled in his last 3 games throwing for only 272 yards with 1 TD against 3 INT’s and that includes the 45-0 walloping of the LA Chargers. He did rush for 2 TD’s against the woeful Chargers. If I know Brian Flores, Cam Newton won’t be running all over us Sunday. We’ll be on him like white on rice. The Patriots are on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs concerned, even if they win out 9-7 is not going to be good enough to get in in the fiercely competitive AFC. There are 4 division winners and 3 wild card berths. The Chiefs are the AFC West Champs at 12-1. The Colts and Titans are tied at 9-4 in the AFC South and the Steelers (11-2) are holding a 2 game edge on the Browns (9-4) who are now surging and looking to grab the AFC North division crown. Our Dolphins currently have the #7 seed at 8-5. 10 wins is the only chance the Dolphins will be in the playoffs, so in essence, our last 3 games are essentially playoff games. First one is at home against a very familiar opponent.

There are always ebbs and flows in the long 16 game season, and despite the loss last week, I think our team is performing very well. The injuries are adding up, and I’d really love to have Kyle Van Noy back this week along with good Ole Bobby McCain. I’d love to have thumper Elandon Roberts back at LB too, he was missed last week. I wouldn’t mind having Ereck Flowers back either but only if he’s ready, I think Mt. Kindley has done well in his stead. It’s possible that Isaiah Ford could suit up for us this week, depending on how Jakeem Grant is doing with his hamstring injury. Lynn Bowden kind of exploded last week getting lots of action. Bowden was targeted 9 times and caught 7 passes for 82 yards. He also rushed once and the previous week against Cincy, Bowden caught 4 for 41 yards. Safe to say he’s part of the offense now.

As the pictures above portray, this game is the Mentor against his former Student. I don’t have to explain to all of you that Bill Belichick has always been a great coach and a master of making adjustments before the game, during the game and after the game. People will say look at him w/o Brady but Belichick created Brady. He tailored the offense to work with Tom Brady’s strengths and mask his weaknesses. In my opinion, only people who don’t really understand the game look at Tom Brady with his 30 TD’s and 11 INT’s and think that Brady was the reason for the Patriots success. The Buccaneers are just loaded with talent, there is no comparing the Bucs roster with the Patriots roster. RB Ronald Jones has come of age having his best season. WR’s Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown along with TE’s Rob Gronkowski, O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate. The Patriots, besides having an inept passer at QB (Newton), the Patriots WR’s are Jakobi Myers, N’Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd along with RB’s Damien Harris and James White. The Bucs also have loads more talent on defense with LB’s Lavonte David and Devin White, DE’s Shaq Barrett and JPP and DT Ndamukong Suh. Folks, it’s not even close. I’m loathe to agree with Belichick himself when he said they sold out to win previous years and have left the cupboard somewhat bare this season. I’d say he speaks true.

My point in the last paragraph is we are basically trying to knock off Bill Belichick’s team, and although they might be outmanned, they have the football mind to keep them in this one. We have a disciple of that football mind, and if there was ever a time for the student to teach the teacher something, this is it. We need a strong gameplan from Brian Flores. We can’t allow Cam Newton and the RPO or whatever they employ to beat us. We have to be the better team Sunday. The NFL season is a game of attrition, no one knows who will be available at the end of the season and if we make it far enough that we’re in the playoffs, maybe we get Preston Williams back, Gaskin with fresh legs, maybe we get TE Mike Gesicki back as well. We MUST win this game, and then we move on to the next playoff game against the Las Vegas Raiders in their new house. Win this one, I like our chances against Da Raiders.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Great, good to hear, Tua didn’t play good today, he hasn’t been that good since he started, that’s my opinion. it’s hard for me to think anyone would disagree with that. not trying to get a reaction, i was against Tua from day 1

Jax has the tie breaker by .554 to .593, a .039 advantage with 2 games to go. It could still flip to the Jest, but that is a solid advantage.

        —————-
Somewhere I vaguely recall that someone (Mike E.?) thought there was a small chance Preston Williams might be back for the Buffalo game IF it means anything. His addition, plus getting Parker and Gesicki back, WOULD BE HUGE!! THIS TEAM HAS “Mo-Mentum!!”

Raiders had a couple extra days to get ready for us, but they fell off a cliff over the last month. We don’t have an update on Carr’s injury so we’ll have to prepare for him and Mariota. As a franchise, the Fins have had good success against Mariota. If memory serves, we knocked him out of the game the last two times he started against us.

  31. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MY BEST GUESS is that Miami will face Marcus Mariota this Saturday in Vegas, NOT Mr. Carr. That is good news for Miami’s dominant defense. Mariota arrived in Tennessee with great fanfare after leading Oregon to the National Championship game vs. Auburn (which they lost on a last second field goal.) He never lived up to the billing of a franchise quarterback. So the Titans made a move for Tannehill and HAVE been a serious contender ever since Tanny arrived in Nashville.

IT IS my strongly held opinion that Mariota will be in over his head facing a Brian Flores defense that’s loaded with talent. Vegas MAY be favored in this game. But I see MIAMI finding a way to win it. A win in Las Vegas will make the game at BUFFALO one of the biggest in the long history of this rivalry. But, enough of that.

The Las Vegas Raiders are now squarely in the cross hairs of Coach Brian Flores. That’s NOT a good place to be.

There’s nothing like a double doink. LOL

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

THAT MISSED EXTRA POINT can be chalked up to Jarvis Landry’s mouth!!–Seems like Jarvis talked too much to the defensive back he beat for the TD, and the side judge heard it!!! – – He promptly hit the Browns with a 15-yard unsportsmenlike penalty, moving the extra point attempt back 15 yards. That extra point would have been GOOD from 33 yards. But it hit the upright from 48 yards!!! Jarvis Landry’s the man to blame—not Cody Parkey.

  34. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We experienced history today. Just think, years from now you can tell your great grandkids all about the day, where you were, and what you were doing when the Titans beat the Lions with a never before seen final score of 46-25.

Right on! This matters to us (at least me) greatly.

Generally speaking (without making my brain blow out through my ears with the myriad of intricacies), we can still get as high as R1P3 (Bengals win out, we get help, and the Texans lose out)… and we can still get as low as R1P15 [everybody around us right now (we’re currently @ R1P6) loses and the Texans win out]. Yes, I’m talking about the Texans’ 1st round draft pick — not our natty own — when I say “we” or “us”.

Thus far in the draft process (IMO), the cream of the crop (elite) ends at about R1P8 (give or take). I’ll be happy with top-10 status, but I’d love to stay within the top-7. Why?

I’ll tell ya why… if we land within the top-7, we could probably trade down just a bit and get ANOTHER 1st rounder for 2022… that is, if we should choose to pass on any of the top-7 in 2021.

This is probably our last chance to parlay what we have into future picks with all the ammo we still have (THANKS BILL O’BRIEN is RIGHT, Tim!!!). Why is this our last chance to do this, IMO? Because we’re going to be winning for YEARS with what we’re building, thus drafting late in every draft hereafter.

    GREAT WIN TODAY, PHINS!!!
    HELL YEAH!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s the scary thing for the rest of the league. We’re already good and have two 1st and two 2nd round picks in 2021. 🙂

Crazy, I’m in 2 different FF leagues besides our FMU league and I was in the playoffs in all 3. I lost in one league 136.96 – 135.90, and won in the other 134.02 – 126.74. Two close games. Sucks to lose by a point, but that’s what you get sometimes.

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Our team deserves a lot of credit for coming back and taking that game. That’s 2 years in a row the Dolphins eliminated the Patriots from the playoffs. That’s no small feat.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

AND IT NEVER GETS OLD, does it, Mike??
Last year, to be fully honest, beating the Cheats ONLY eliminated them from a first round bye. THAT proved FATAL when Tannehill & the Titans came to Foxboro and crushed the Pats right in front of their home town fans. How great was it to see Tom-boy lose his last two games in Gillette Stadium?!?!
      ——————————–
NOW, on to bigger and better things in Las Vegas. Go-o-o FINS!!

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

we messed up their home field advantage last year. we didn’t eliminate them from the playoffs.

  44. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I didn’t watch the whole game yesterday, but what I saw at the beginning I knew what they were trying to do when they were committed to the run game. I’ve been calling for it every home game and we finally did it. Using that heat in the afternoon and wearing down the opponent is crucial when we aren’t on the road. It’s a shame it took injuries to our receiving corps, but I’ll take it. Rookie mistake by Tua in the redzone with that INT, but he learned from it and the next time he scrambled for a TD like he should have done on the first one instead of forcing a pass.
I love seeing this team call trick plays. I love this team going for two. I love seeing QB sneaks.
I love beating the Pats and I love watching Cam lose. Great victory all around.

Mike E. – I note that you graciously did not mention the FF ass whoopin’ that you administered to me in the FMU league. Thanks for the consideration!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, no gloating. A lot of luck is involved in FF. I hope I have one more week of it so I can win the championship in the one league I’m still in it. Honestly, FF is a lot of work, especially when those injuries start mounting, you have to constantly monitor that. It gets old, but winning that championship will make it all worthwhile.

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Some Dolphins fan on twitter was saying we don’t need to draft a RB, that’s it the O-line. It’s always the O-line, but you need a guy that can you can depend on to carry a load during the season and one that’s talented enough to keep the defense honest even when the O-line isn’t at its best. We don’t have that on the roster. Get that guy!

  57. New Age's avatar New Age says:

We are in the enviable position of having one of the best trades in history with the Tunsil trade. It takes good drafting and coaching but we effectively helped neuter one of our AFC opponents for at least 2-3 years. I don’t care if you have Mahomes, you can’t win without him having tools.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I don’t know about one of the best in history, but it was one great trade. What you thought at the time is most important….. and I at least thought it a steal.

Deiter is just that a fill in. He offers versatility and that is good for depth but I don’t see him as a reliable starter which Kindley is

I’m all for giving Tua a rookie pass but can we see some improvement please?

did you happen to notice the play selection in the 2nd half?
      Let’s run the ball!
It would appear judging from that, they didn’t trust Tua and wanted to get it out of his hands as much as possible.

apparently the decision makers are not sold on who they drafted #5 overall

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The game didn’t dictate passing to win the game. It dictated a run it down their throats plan.

        Geez, loueez.

  63. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Re: that draft I posted last night. It don’t think it would pan out that way. A couple players may go before where I got them like Devonta Smith at #21 and Najee might go earlier than our 1st pick in round 2 unless Houston keeps loosing.

D, I got OC Hill that late but he was rated higher. The simulator just fell that way. He was only rated about 10-15 spots higher though. It is just the way they have him evaluated. They feel he doesn’t have as much position flexibility as the top OC’s. He is more of a bull than an athletic.

With that said, I think he would fit right in with the rest of the bull’s we have on the OL plus he would have that chemistry playing next to Kindley already.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I was thinking of red zone situations inside the 10 yard line. You have a 2 TE set with Gesicki and Pitts then Parker and Devonta Smith or Preston Williams out wide with Najee Harris in the backfield. That would be tough for many defenses to defend!

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I keep hearing Tua made mistake on that INT. I watched it and I swear he got hit as he was throwing. Can anyone else confirm that for me?

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

1: 40 mark, yes he was getting tugged on, he should have never made that throw in that situation under duress, take the sack, throw it thru the endzone, protect the potential points!

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I actually agree with Rob on that. Yes he was hit as he threw but the mistake was trying to make that throw instead of tucking the ball and running. The important thing he seems to have learned because when confronted with almost the identical situation in the 2nd half he did tuck it and scored

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

It’s called learning, Ken. It’s not allowed as a rookie QB after his one half season.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

That was a very lame throw to say the least!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah he got hit while throwing but still should not have attempted it. It looks like the ball placement wasn’t affected all that much. Looks to me like he meant to throw it back shoulder but the receiver was not in position for it. I think, if he was not about to get sacked, he would not have attempted that throw or would have led the receiver in back of EZ vs trying back shoulder.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Angle of the throw was straight at the receiver rather than deep endzone. Maybe the hit, but either way should not have tried that one. Lot of distance across the field and time for the CB to adjust.

  65. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If you include Williams, yesterday we were down what would have been our 3 top WRs and top TE. That’s tough. Do that to any team in the league and see what happens.

  66. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  67. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I heard Miami is shopping for Tua handcuffs against the raiders, i hope we can run the ball

  68. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Overall Tua played very well yesterday. He made the one mistake in the red zone but other wise a very efficient game. Stats were not flashy but the results were. Especially considering we effectively had no downfield weapons and that stud Mack Hollins dropped a pass that probably cost us points

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wasn’t his best game, but what I like about him is his field awareness. Same kind that Peyton had in spades. No Tua doesn’t have the same level yet but then Manning had a tough rookie year.

  69. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I thought the hit definitely affected the velocity of the throw, and he was hit from behind. I can’t tell you for sure but he might not have felt the players presence there.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I absolutely think the hit affected the throw. I still think it wasn’t a good decision the receiver was well covered.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s kind of hard to say that, we don’t know what kind of throw it would have been w/o the hit. That’s what I’m getting at.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I agree with, Mike E. The CB was beat if Tua led him with plenty of room to catch in end zone. Hit made it a bad throw possibly.

  70. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Fact: we win more with Tua starting than Fitz 5-2 vs 4-3.

Fact: attrition from injuries and Covid has caused Tua to have less weapons to work with than what Fitz had.

Fact: Tua has thrown only 2 interceptions in 7 starts. Fitz has thrown 8 in 7 starts

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Fact: Fitz has a 93.1 QB rating and Tua has a 92.5. Seems overall they performed similarly (even if differently), but only one is the possible future of the franchise who is still learning.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

But Tua wins more with less. Biggest difference imo is turnover ratio. If you don’t turn the ball over you will win more than you lose

It was a bad decision by Tua to throw that pick. I was yelling “No!” before it ever left his hand. I think he got a little rushed and just made a bad decision. It happens. What you look for is whether or not he keeps making the same mistakes over and over again. So far, Tua is not repeating mistakes.

And, maybe all these backups coming in and looking good has something to do with Tua helping make them look good? Plus, the game dictated we run the ball. I seriously doubt it was the coaches feeling that Tua needed to be held back and kept from throwing. NE is terrible against the run, and I’m sure the coaches wanted to run the ball anyway.

Mack Hollins had a big drop yesterday….but he’s a stud and it was Tua’s fault for throwing it to him I guess.

If you think this team doesn’t desperately need WRs and RBs, you need to go visit Mike E and get your glasses.

The TD pass by Matt Haack was a thing of beauty. And he had a TD run a few games ago. Both got thrown out on technicalities, but the tape lives on. Might keep the Raiders ST coach up at night this week.

Go figure – 3/4 of the AFC East beat the LA Rams – BUF, MIA and NYJ, only NE got beat. Interesting . . .

It’s like a bunch of drunk guys sitting at a bar.
    —————————————————-
I can see it now….just people from this blog are the only ones in a bar and it’s game one of the season…

I am sitting there already talking about the next years draft while Krishna is thinking “Who is this clown?”. Rhino is sitting next to me thinking, “If this guy shows me one more highlight on his phone I am knocking him off his stool!”. Meanwhile, Mike E and D are challenging each other to see who can do more pushups. Our west coast brew masters are talking about how shitty the bars’ craft beer is. Piggy is starring down the bar tender and contemplating throwing his drink at him as he notices a jar of pickled pigs feet in back of the bar. Topsecret is watching the front door to make sure no Jets fans get in. ORob has his hand spread out on the dart board as he challenges Phelon to see if he has a Tua arm or a Herbert arm. Randy and Ken are looking at each other wondering, if they weren’t phins fans, would they ever actually associate with these people. Rock and Toba are reminiscing about the great white North. No matter what any one says about the Dolphins, positive or negative, Tim tells them that everything is going to be ok. Stanger is telling everyone how great President Biden is but no one is listening. OD is sitting with Herd telling her the history of every first game of every season. Everyone else is afraid to talk to Herd cause they don’t want anyone thinking they are hitting on her. Cav is over in the corner playing Donkey Kong. M13 is up in the DJ booth telling everyone to get on the dance floor while Wyoming is telling him to play some Hank Williams. Meanwhile, no one knows, but the fry cook they don’t see in the kitchen is actually HOME. :-O
