Preseason Game 2 – Falcons @ Dolphins

Very important to keep in mind that the first game was really the first action against a different opponent other than each other and the coaches are just trying to see guys execute plays, all the while keeping it simple and vanilla so to speak, not giving any future opponents a real glimpse of what this offense and defense are going to do once the season starts. If you can do that, you probably won’t be so disappointed with what you see.

The first game showed some weakness with our O-line. Once again, not very concerned by that. It has nothing to with the lack of talent our O-line faces in practice against our own D-line (read that a few places), or that our O-line is fat, sloppy and overweight and slower than than last year (read that too). It’s preseason game one and we’re trying guys out at different spots and we all know synergy and continuity is something an O-line lives and dies by. Hard to have synergy with different people all over the place. That’s my take anyway. If the regular season begins and we’re in game 3 and this O-line looks slow, fat and lethargic I’ll let the worries commence.

The decisions at WR are going to be difficult, but Allen Hurns wrist injury just made one decision for them. He’s on IR and my guess is unless we get to get game 8 and we need him, he’ll probably never see action in a Dolphins uni. 2 of our WR’s are ST’s stalwarts and that cannot be overlooked. Jakeem Grant and Mack Hollins almost have to make the cuts because of that alone. Parker, Fuller and Wilson are the 3 vets that look to be locks, although I personally wouldn’t consider Wilson a lock. With the injuries that all 3 vets have endured, and how their spotty availability hurts the team, I wouldn’t consider him a lock. The question is, which young WR’s other than Waddle make the cut? Lynn Bowden Jr., who the Dolphins traded a 4th RD pick for last season would be one I think makes the roster. Preston Williams, the big 6’5 oft injured WR brings talent and size but also the injury bug too. Kirk Merritt has been having a nice 2021 so far but has to be a long shot. I think Ford faces astronomical odds of making the roster. Parker, Fuller, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and then pick one or two more. The rest of the preseason will decide that.

At RB, Salvon Ahmed has got some people giddy but I still think Myles Gaskin in the “lead back”. Not quite the same as Derrick Henry lead back in TEN but I consider him to the be the recipient of the most playing time. If Brown can give us the tough yards and grind out defenses, I think that could really limit Ahmed’s touches, although both Gaskin and Ahmed can catch out of the backfield equally as well, but I think Gaskin is the slightly better player.I don’t which young RB makes the roster out of Scarlett or Doaks or if the veteran Laird makes the cut. I guess the rest of the preseason will tell us the story there as well.

At TE, Gesicki is the clear choice with rookie Hunter Long hobbled by a leg injury and still sporting a thick knee brace. Smythe, Shaheen, Myarick, Tucker and Carter round out the depth there. I know some of you disagree but get Gesicki signed soon before he nets 70-80 catches for a 1000+ yards and 8 TD’s, because then the contract will be much higher than it will be now.

On defense, I really want to see our young OLB get more playing time. I’ve said it before he should be a big difference maker in our difference and if he’s not on the field, rookie Jaelan Phillips won’t be doing that. Hope to see him in action against Atlanta and hope to see good things. On the defensive side, Emmanuel Ogbah is the defense’s Gesicki. Sign him now before his contract is one we can’t afford. Shocked that LB Elandon Roberts is coming off the PUP (Good news!). Vince Biegel has been brought along slowly and despite being activated, I’d expect the same from Roberts.

I still hold to my prediction for the O-line as JACKSON – KINDLEY – DEITER – HUNT – EICHENBERG. Stay tuned. I look for Tua to have a nice game this week. The O-line will be better and the worries will subside. Want to see Phillips make a play or two that make us all think “Wow, this kid is gonna be something”. I want to see some tough, grinding runs from Brown, bullying would be tacklers for extra yards and then watch Gaskin and Ahmed come out looking like world class sprinters. I want to see more good things from Grant on returns and I want to see Gesicki and Waddle make some more big plays. I want positives, less negatives and of course no injuries!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

On top of the inactives above…..

“Holland, the No. 36 overall pick in this year’s draft, is a surprise scratch. He’s spent time at free safety with the first-team defense and did not appear to get injured during the team’s joint practices with the Falcons. He had an interception off quarterback Matt Ryan on Thursday.”

The AFC is going to be a beast of a conference this year.

  61. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Our first 3 drives were each 11 play drives. Even though they were high play counts, at no time did it feel like we were struggling to gain yards. It seems like we could have opened up the offense even more if we needed to, but were content to take the easy plays that were there.

  62. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Perry returning kicks is clearly a drop off from Grant returning kicks.

  63. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

How fantastic was it that Long was out there playing after we thought we had lost him for the season?

How scary was it when Waddle went down?

I just watched a Seahawk carted off the field after watching a couple Jest carted off earlier. We’ve had a number of minor injuries, and we lost Hurns, but we’ve really been pretty fortunate so far not to have any major impactful injuries.

  64. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    2 penalties for 19 yds
    7 for 9 on 3rd down conversions
5 for 6 redzone TD efficiency
    36:42 ball control

    No big injuries

  70. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Just finished the 3AM version of the game while doing laundry….lol.

Now we know why there’s a slide in the locker room!!!!!

It seemed to me Waddle hyperextended his knee and I bet that hurt. He will be slow and hurting for sure.

I don’t think Perry makes the team….he looked slow and light, i.e. one handed takedowns is all it took to tackle him.

I loved the slide in the pocket by Tua to get the ball out for a TD pass. Is that what you call pocket presence? Of course, it doesn’t count because it wasn’t a 30 yd pass. I’ll take a TD any day…..lol. Oh….but there was a 30 yarder to Gesicki (love Gesicki), just not sure if that one counted either.

Tua can make all the throws WITH ACCURACY and with strength. I don’t see his arm or throwing mechanics as an issue.

The defense is looking pretty good and SAM was awesome last night.

OL seemed to have gotten a wake up call or a boot up their ass by Flores!

    Just PS, but………

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      My take on Tua

His arm strength is balanced by his accuracy, making him a better than average QB

What takes him to another level is his pocket presence, command of the O

What we don’t know yet is how he reads a D, if he can do that, like he did in Alabama he’ll be just below the top tier guys

Having the big arm allows you to get out of trouble and make a big play with the flick of your wrist, Tua can’t do that like Mahomes and Allen

Allen has even more potential, than Mahomes, because he’s so hard to bring down

Tua will be good enough to get us a ring, if the D continues to be strong as 2020

He can also make those around him better, which is a great sign

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I think you’re selling him short, but glad to see his improvement….we shall see.

We haven’t see him air it out yet, imo.

  71. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Gaskin had 27 yards rushing and 44 yards receiving 4.5 ypc rushing and 11 ypc receiving I am starting to feel better about what we have. ALL of our RB’s had more than 4ypc ave.

It was not surprising to me with our Co-co’s that the RB’s & TE’s are such a big part of our passing game. (not just check down outlets)

Oh, I am watching the game again and just saw Waddle’s oscar performance again. SMH WTF?

  72. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Those shorts are awesome second watching too.

  73. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I noticed that they gave Perry the lion’s share of return duty both on kicks and punts yesterday. Wonder how much we can read into that?

  74. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I agree Eguavoen solidified a spot for himself on the 53 last night. 7 Tck 4 assist 4 sack 4 TFL and 2pts he as a disruptive ball seeking missile

  75. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

On that play at 3:22 of the first when Tua takes off for the 1st he needs to get the F down and slide!

  76. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The TE’s were really unsung heros on the O line yesterday. The did a lot of inline blocking and down field as well to help the RB’s get those yards.

  77. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gaskin played similar to last year, he’s going to get 30-60 yards a game each rushing and receiving

Tua taking the next step is really benefitting him, in that when he does catch a pass he’s got more space, because the D now has to cover the entire field

  78. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Watched some jet highlights, Zach Wilson’s arm is special

Not sure he’ll be able to read a D, which he’ll have to do to succeed, because he’s not going to make it by just his legs

PS can be somewhat like college with receivers wide open at times, so you have to take some things you see with a grain of salt, but he can wing it

  79. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Van Ginkel didn’t look good last night. He is a step behind.

Sam did have a bad PI called against him on the play that Van Ginkel got called on roughing the passer.

  80. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Something i am liking re-watching the game is; the defense looks like it knows what it is doing. When the offense shifts, the defense passes off the responsibilities seamlessly

  81. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I loved the 8 men on 9 men on the line with only two back to end the first half and make a chance for extra points. They don’t know where or when they’re coming…..long gone are the Olivadotti days!!!!!

  82. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Eguavoen I see as a KVN type of player, which thrives by using smarts after the play breaks down, but isn’t exactly the type of guy that can bull/speed rush on demand

Think his spot is still in jeooardy

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Funny, I didn’t see that at all…..he created everyone of one of his opportunities with spin moves, slide moves, straight up the gap…

He does need to keep balling and show up to make it.

  83. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Seeing Gesicki block a lot more and much better this PS

  84. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I think physical traits in a QB can make them great or elite or top tier. I think mental traits in a QB can make them great or elite or top tier.

All things being equal, I would rather have a smart QB….just my opinion.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

the mental side can get better as the player ages, while the physical side declines with age so I’ll agree with ya. If it is already a strength (Manning-esque) it can continue to get better even if the physical side declines. I would much rather have 30 YO manning than 26 YO Lamar Jackson.

LOL, Rock. I’m also going to start calling our offensive coordinators ‘The Cocos’. And Waddle played well, but that performance was dynamite. Get the man a statue! 🤣

Just my opinion, but I don’t think Big Drama’s injury was a hyperextension. I think when the Falcon leg whipped into him his cleat came down hard right above his knee and it just hurt like hell. Probably a significant bruise, but nothing to do with the ligament. We’ll never know because they sure as hell wont give us any info on it, lol.

  91. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Happy birthday, Mike!!

  92. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yesterday was fun, and we looked good, but I’m still staying reserved on just how good. Atlanta rested a number of starters and it’s vanilla preseason. We can only play who they put in front of us, so it isn’t a knock on our team. We beat them like a drum the way we you’d expect, so kudos to us. We did look really good.

I’m just trying to keep an even keel because we start the season off with 4 strong opponents. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us start 0-2, so I’m trying to temper my own expectations just a bit.

The Pets are going to be a tough out in NE, but I think we have a fair chance to win that game. I don’t think we’ve caught up to the Jills yet, but I’m confident we’ve closed the gap. I’m still picking the Jills to win it all this season.
