Preseason Game 2 – Falcons @ Dolphins

Very important to keep in mind that the first game was really the first action against a different opponent other than each other and the coaches are just trying to see guys execute plays, all the while keeping it simple and vanilla so to speak, not giving any future opponents a real glimpse of what this offense and defense are going to do once the season starts. If you can do that, you probably won’t be so disappointed with what you see.

The first game showed some weakness with our O-line. Once again, not very concerned by that. It has nothing to with the lack of talent our O-line faces in practice against our own D-line (read that a few places), or that our O-line is fat, sloppy and overweight and slower than than last year (read that too). It’s preseason game one and we’re trying guys out at different spots and we all know synergy and continuity is something an O-line lives and dies by. Hard to have synergy with different people all over the place. That’s my take anyway. If the regular season begins and we’re in game 3 and this O-line looks slow, fat and lethargic I’ll let the worries commence.

The decisions at WR are going to be difficult, but Allen Hurns wrist injury just made one decision for them. He’s on IR and my guess is unless we get to get game 8 and we need him, he’ll probably never see action in a Dolphins uni. 2 of our WR’s are ST’s stalwarts and that cannot be overlooked. Jakeem Grant and Mack Hollins almost have to make the cuts because of that alone. Parker, Fuller and Wilson are the 3 vets that look to be locks, although I personally wouldn’t consider Wilson a lock. With the injuries that all 3 vets have endured, and how their spotty availability hurts the team, I wouldn’t consider him a lock. The question is, which young WR’s other than Waddle make the cut? Lynn Bowden Jr., who the Dolphins traded a 4th RD pick for last season would be one I think makes the roster. Preston Williams, the big 6’5 oft injured WR brings talent and size but also the injury bug too. Kirk Merritt has been having a nice 2021 so far but has to be a long shot. I think Ford faces astronomical odds of making the roster. Parker, Fuller, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and then pick one or two more. The rest of the preseason will decide that.

At RB, Salvon Ahmed has got some people giddy but I still think Myles Gaskin in the “lead back”. Not quite the same as Derrick Henry lead back in TEN but I consider him to the be the recipient of the most playing time. If Brown can give us the tough yards and grind out defenses, I think that could really limit Ahmed’s touches, although both Gaskin and Ahmed can catch out of the backfield equally as well, but I think Gaskin is the slightly better player.I don’t which young RB makes the roster out of Scarlett or Doaks or if the veteran Laird makes the cut. I guess the rest of the preseason will tell us the story there as well.

At TE, Gesicki is the clear choice with rookie Hunter Long hobbled by a leg injury and still sporting a thick knee brace. Smythe, Shaheen, Myarick, Tucker and Carter round out the depth there. I know some of you disagree but get Gesicki signed soon before he nets 70-80 catches for a 1000+ yards and 8 TD’s, because then the contract will be much higher than it will be now.

On defense, I really want to see our young OLB get more playing time. I’ve said it before he should be a big difference maker in our difference and if he’s not on the field, rookie Jaelan Phillips won’t be doing that. Hope to see him in action against Atlanta and hope to see good things. On the defensive side, Emmanuel Ogbah is the defense’s Gesicki. Sign him now before his contract is one we can’t afford. Shocked that LB Elandon Roberts is coming off the PUP (Good news!). Vince Biegel has been brought along slowly and despite being activated, I’d expect the same from Roberts.

I still hold to my prediction for the O-line as JACKSON – KINDLEY – DEITER – HUNT – EICHENBERG. Stay tuned. I look for Tua to have a nice game this week. The O-line will be better and the worries will subside. Want to see Phillips make a play or two that make us all think “Wow, this kid is gonna be something”. I want to see some tough, grinding runs from Brown, bullying would be tacklers for extra yards and then watch Gaskin and Ahmed come out looking like world class sprinters. I want to see more good things from Grant on returns and I want to see Gesicki and Waddle make some more big plays. I want positives, less negatives and of course no injuries!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

I think the idea of keeping him week one, then moving him to the PS when Fuller comes back is a real possibility. Most teams won’t be keeping an extra slot open just to poach him week 2, so maybe we have a good shot at keeping him that way.

wrong, DC’s make you play to your weakness and take away your strengths, with Tom Brady they would give up the short stuff and play deep.
Tua struggles with the deep ball so you pressure him and take away the short stuff

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

ORob – you are right that there are exceptions. Blitzing Peyton Manning not a good idea in general. But generally Rock is right. Do like the way Tua has moved in the pocket this preseason though. Cause do think they’ll be coming after him.

These last 18 days are going to be torture. I’m not even looking forward to the last game. I don’t think we’ll see much of anybody who will be on the team.

I had forgotten that BS cincy pulled last year till SB brought it up. Cincy has been a dirty team for a number of years. I’d let the starters sit except for the oline. Get them as many reps as you can.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I forgot about it too, but went on youtube and the video was in the top 2 suggested and it threw me off because I first thought it was a joint practice squabble when we weren’t having joint practices then noticed the date.

If I remember correctly it was the same guy who hit Grant before he caught the ball on punt returns both times. And I want to say there was another questionable hit from someone else. but it was that second hit on Grant where we said enough of this crap.

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Haven’t really heard much about Tom

Cameron Tom got the snaps at right guard in an 11-on-11 drill while Robert Hunt was dealing with a contact lens issue.

Maybe he’s got a shot at backup C/G

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Trying to put together my final 53, and I’m having a hard time with the oline beyond the obvious guys. I’ve got 6 locks, but it really feels like nothing but guesses on the last 3 or 4 spots.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        probably 3 spots, I don’t think we’ll keep 10

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jakson, Kindley, Deiter, Hunt, Eichenberg, Davis, Skura, and Little I see as locks

        Larnel? Tom?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’ve got Jackson, Kindley, Deiter, Hunt, Eich, Davis as absolute locks. I think Skura is practically a lock. I know we traded for Little, but I can’t call him a lock. He’s only 100g cap hit if we cut him.

        Coleman, Pankey, Little? no idea.

  29. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

My prediction for our Phins: 12-5. And yes, that puts us into the playoffs. But if we sustain a significant injury or two, we’re not going 12-5… more like 10-7.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Methinks we’re deep enough at most positions this season to get over some key injuries. A few years ago, I’d say if we suffered a key injury or two, we’d be dead in the water. This team can make the playoffs.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

One deep team. What is lacking for a real run unless we get lucky is more Alpha guys up top, but that comes with having a young squad.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Alpha guys don’t grow on trees, you have to develope them, by putting the pretty good guys in position to succeed, like is happening on D

Flores didn’t make X or AVG, he made them better

If he can make Tua look in the reg season like he has in PS we’re on our way

  30. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

10-6 was not enough to get us in last year with the expanded wild card round, I hope 11 will do it this year!

  31. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You can’t be great everywhere, you just have to be very good at the important positions and your QB better be damn good

We’re good enough on D to win an SB

On O we just need consistant QB play and great play with game on the line

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

12-5 is my prediction, if we can win 1 of first 2, otherwise 11-6

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Can’t say won’t be right. And that makes the season one to watch.

  37. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m predicting 11 wins, unless we lose one more than I expect. If that happens, I think we’ll win 10.

  38. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That 17th game is really messing with my prediction process. It’ll probably take a few years for me to fully incorporate it, lol.

  39. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not which ones make the active roster, but am wondering how our wide receiver rotation works on game day.

Parker, Fuller and Waddle will start. Seems clear Wilson will get reps.

If healthy how many snaps does Preston get? Anyone else? Grant could get some but think going to be mostly specialty packages, although may spell Fuller.

Think one part limiting the others is that Gesicki is gonna be in on almost every true passing situation, and a lot of times that will mean another TE as well.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think they all play and Tua spreads the ball around, belicheat’s head will be spinning, he won’t known who to take away

Grant will come in as a decoy, to see how they cover him, then he’ll get something in the flat or end around

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe they all play, but part of the question is how much. Don’t see say Hollins getting many reps at wideout unless someone goes down.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I think Parker, Waddle and Gesicki get the most opportunities or targets beyond that I think how we plan against opponents will determine who has a larger roll in a particular week.

  40. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That’s a tough way to go. Never done it but you’d think there would be some kind of quick release mechanism involved.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A kite surfer in Florida died Wednesday after a strong wind picked the man off the ground, carried him 400 feet and slammed him into the second floor of a house on Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials said the kite surfer hadn’t even gotten into the water yet when a strong wind lifted him into the air and into the house. He was taken to a hospital, where he died a few hours later.

If we give up 187 on the ground to the cheats we’re have a long day

Pass D looks great so far, but what happens when they play Buffalo/TB?

OL is still a huge ?

We all like to look at the bright side, because we’re fans, but the reality is we’re a +115 betting underdog to make the playoffs

If 10 wins may get us to the playoffs and 8 or 9 won’t, an 8-9 prediction is more in line with what the betting public thinks

3 main variables that go into a season:

More key guys having better play than expected vs less

More key guys having worse play than expected vs better

        Injuries

Since 2 of these 3 variables may lower season win totals, it’s actually safer as a bettor to have a pessimistic outlook

In the end this all means squat, but to say someone is trolling with a lower win total is actually the opposite of reality

    3 guys with falling stock:

Laird – most of us don’t expect him to make the 53, so we saw this one coming

Davis – this one also doesn’t seem like a bad thing, because it looks like Eichenberg may be our opening starting RT

Iggy – as bad as this one seems, we have a lot of depth at the position to take the sting away, and Needham taking the next step also lessens the effect

Think Iggy just needs more time,, and looks like we can afford to give it to him this year

Not so bad to have 3 mainly insignificant players as our stock fallers

Coach says the linebacker room has guys that can contribute in all areas — run game, pass game, rush, kicking game. Good competition in the room, he says.

Flores on Marino/Tua relationship: Dan’s insight, experience, knowledge of preparation and being a professional and playing in this league is always good for a young QB to have someone to bounce ideas off; someone to get some mentorship from. For all the QBs here, Coach says.

It was a tough call on Lynn Bowden. He did some nice things in camp, had a good season last year, had a good offseason. Unfortunately he had an injury and the team felt like that was the best decision (to place him on IR), per Coach.

We’re going to keep the best players, vaccinated or unvaccinated. I think that’s best for the team. Coach says he also understands some of the issues that can arise but at the end of the day it’s about getting the team to perform as best as it can.

On how much the performance Saturday vs. ATL weighed into decision to not play guys — we probably made the decision before they even played last week. That performance didn’t hurt, though.

On Kirk Merritt: he’s learning how to get on a routine, stay on a routine, believe in a routine and that the extra film study, work on the JUGGS machine, extra reps in the weight room, things of that nature will help him make improvements and I think we’ve seen those improvements

We have peace with the amount of time we got for guys — it’s not like we didn’t talk about it. Everyone is involved in those discussions and a lot goes into those decisions.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With it being Cincinnati, those cheapshot artists that they are, probably a good decision not to play most starters

We can now feel pretty good about the health of our team going into week 1

With the depth at WR, it may be a blessing, that Fuller is out week 1, gives us a chance to put 1 player on the 53, then possibly someone on IR designation with 3 week return possible

  78. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I watched the 1st half of last year’s Bengals game. The cheap shots started when Cincy got flagged for nailing Parker with a blindside block after an INT that was clearly coming back for PI.

  79. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m not sure we can say the run defense hasn’t improved based on total run yds given up. ATL got 60+ yds on two plays against scrubs at the end of the game. How many yards did we give up on the ground in the 1st half against the Falcons and Bears?

  80. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Glad Tua isn’t playing this Sunday. At this point there isn’t much to be gained playing him a series or a quarter. I’ll be curious to see how we play the oline though

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I would assume most of the starter being rested includes most of the defense, our top 40 WRs, and our RBs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least some of the oline like Jackson getting some work.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah, and the OL are the guys you have to worry about getting hurt

Let Jackson, Skura, and Eichenberg start

I wouldn’t put Kindley, Hunt or Davis on the field

Eichenberg is a toss-up, but since he didn’t play week 1, think he needs to be at RT

  81. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Burrow was one of the best QBs in the league last year, when given time to throw and the worst, when not…

Yet those buffoons drafted a, as of now, bust WR, instead of a generational LT

Guess that’s why they are who they are

  82. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Belicheat has done a bang-up job creating ambiguity about the Pets starting QB week 1…

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They both played good in PS, but neither is elite, at least not yet for Jones

Cam gives you a better run presence and Jones is better with accuracy and downfield

Cam would seem to be the pick for week 1, based on matchup, but if we get the lead I’d expect both to play

  83. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

A 3 minute drone video of our new training complex. Ross has given us facilities that are some of the best in the NFL. We put this video out in response to the Cowboys own drone video of their facilities that has been lighting up the internet.

  84. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Here’s the Cowboys vid. Their indoor practice field is unbelievable, it’s basically a mini-stadium with seating for a few thousand, but the rest of it…our facilities stack up nicely in comparison.

Had to stop watching at the 5:25 mark, after maybe the stupidest comment, and he’s made a lot of them, Chris Simms have ever made

Tua has both hands on the ball, and that’s a good thing for smaller QBs, don’t want them fumbling

WTF does his height have to do with his ability to hold onto the ball?

IDK Chris, maybe Tua’s large hands should come into play here

    Twice,

In 7th grade I lived in al little town outside of Austin, Texas called Georgetown. The school there was all combined, so middle school and high school were on the same site, just different buildings.

I was on the football team, and we all played on the same field- middle school, high school JV, and varsity. It was insane how rabid the town was about the school football teams, and it wasn’t just the high school teams. They filled up the stadium for the middle school team too, I’m guessing 10,000 strong. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I still maintain to this day, that middle school team I was on in Georgetown could have given my high school football team a run for it’s money, and we had a future NFL player Mike Flanagan playing with us.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Flanagan was on my high school team, not the middle school team, lol

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Find it hard to believe the middle school team competing with the HS team, just because of the size difference, but in reverse the year ahead of me had 5+ guys going to schools like OU, UF and Miami and one was Lomas Brown, had they been a few years behind my class they could’ve competed with my varsity team

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The size is exactly the point. We had a number of players on my middle school team that were huge for 7th and 8th grade. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Georgetown oline had guys as big as my oline with Rio.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And again, Flanagan was one of those guys on my Rio team

      Bullet points from the article:

      ▪ The Tua Tagovailoa on display during the Falcons’ preseason game has been the one we have seen most of camp.

      ▪ Jacoby Brissett looks like he could enter the season as the Dolphins best backup in a decade.

      ▪ Michael Deiter and Robert Hunt look very competent in their new positions.

      ▪ The young offensive line has had some hiccups but deserves time to grow.

      ▪ Albert Wilson’s first 10 days of camp were the best I’ve seen from a Dolphins skill position player in the past decade.

      ▪ Rookie wide receiver Jaylen Waddle is more than just a weapon on screens and deep threats.

      ▪ Salvon Ahmed has joined Zach Sieler and Nik Needham as the best young scrap heap pickups of this regime.

      ▪ Receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. didn’t do enough to incentive the Dolphins to keep him available this season.

      ▪ One of these young receivers that won’t fit on the Dolphins’ 53 will have NFL success elsewhere.

      ▪ Myles Gaskin deserves some respect.

      ▪ The 2020 breakout of Andrew Van Ginkel was not an aberration.

      ▪ Jevon Holland has the type of Pro Bowl ceiling that the Dolphins haven’t had at the position beyond Reshad Jones.

      ▪ If Byron Jones or Xavien Howard is injured, Needham looks like the best option at boundary cornerback.

      ▪ The Dolphins’ best free agent move on defense was signing former Patriots defensive lineman Adam Butler.

      ▪ Stopping the run remains the biggest concern.

      ▪ Ogbah has made a case to get the contract extension that agent Drew Rosenhaus covets.

      ▪ If I’m in a fantasy league (and I’m not), I would be eyeing Mike Gesicki.

Wilson was a veritable reincarnation of Tyreek Hill, darting past defenders to catch bombs and slithering through the secondary for yards after catch. The Dolphins hope that type of production resumes in the opener after he is fully healed from a minor injury that has kept him sidelined recently.

Texas football….I’ve never seen anything like it.

Central Texas football, includes ATX and Lakeway (Austin suburb-?), has some of the best teams in the state. Westlake HS is about 2 miles from house and I can hear the HS band on football Friday. Westlake and Lake Travis (Lakeway) have won the state championship 6-7 times over the last 10 years (I think, but don’t want to look it up). Westlake has won the last 2 and is going for a three-peat. Obviously, Westlake and Lake Travis are arch-rivals.

The “football stadiums” in central Texas are incredible for HS and are state of the art–nothing like I ever saw growing up.
