This is it folks! Last game of the 2021 Preseason. Coach Flores has already put it out there most starters will sit so this is the opportunity for all those players on the roster bubble to make their case to be on the 53. It’s also a good chance to see what the depth looks like because during a season, injuries always rear their ugly head and you need solid depth to stay ahead during the season.
Jacoby Brissett will most likely see a fair amount of action and it’s important for him to show he knows the offense and can run the team in Tua’s absence. There’s always the question as to whether the Dolphins will carry 2 or 3 QB’s, my guess would be just 2. Reid Sinnett will end up on the PS and give the Dolphins another precious roster spot. Recent moves have made the WR depth much clearer. The Dolphins placed 2nd year WR Lynn Bowden Jr. on IR ending his season. The Dolphins also waived WR’s Robert Foster and Isaiah Ford. Veteran Allen Hurns was placed on IR earlier so the only bodies left are Will Fuller (Inactive Week 1), DeVante Parker, Albert Wilson, Jaylen Waddle,Preston Williams, Mack Hollins, Jakeem Grant, Kirk Merritt and Malcolm Perry. 9 WR’s , 6 for week 1. One has to go and I feel it will be Malcolm Perry. WIll the big bodied and oft injured Williams hold off equally as large and ace ST’s player Mack Hollins? I don’t think so. Merritt has had a strong preseason so he has a leg up, but there is still game 3 for Perry to change that. However, it looks very much like we’ll have Parker, Wilson, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and Merritt for the first game against the Patriots.
I expect us to carry 4 TE’s, Gesicki, Shaheen, Long and probably Smythe due to his blocking abilities. Myarick could steal his spot, and who knows, maybe it’s Shaheen that gets cut, but it sure seemed like they like Shaheen. Cethan carter also earn as a spot as an H-back/FB/TC, or maybe Long goes on IR because of his injury.
At RB, I think we’ll carry 4 into the regular season, the clear choices right now are the first 3, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Malcolm Brown. After that it’s a real tossup as to whether 2021 7th RD pick rookie Gerrid Doaks makes it, or veteran Patrick Laird or a surprise like Jordan Scarlett. Game 3 will probably have a lot to say about which guy makes it!
On the O-line, still not decided (as far as we know), but I’m sticking with my prediction of Jackson-Kindley-Deiter-Hunt-Eichenberg. Still possible that either Eichenberg starts at LG over Kindley and Jesse Davis starts at RT but I believe it will be the former. Jermaine Eluemunor has also been released. You have to figure we carry at least if not 9 OL so the aforementioned 5 plus Davis, Skura, Little and either Coleman or Pankey.
On defense, despite not seeing a lot of Jaelan Phillips, I still think he’s going to be a major part of our defense. AVG looks ready to be right where he left off last season, and that’s a good thing. I really love our depth at LB with AVG, Baker, McKinney, Phillips, Roberts, Eguavoen, Riley, Biegel. Not sure if Griffin makes that final cut, especially since Roberts has been activated.
On the DL we have the usual Wilkins-Davis-Ogbah, followed by Sieler, Jenkins, Butler and Strowbridge. More than likely that last spot will be up for grabs between Jason Strowbridge and Jonathan Ledbetter, unless we carry 8 DL, which is possible. Benito Jones is still in the mix but Tyshun Render was moved to LB where he faces tough odds against the previously mentioned group.
The Dolphins strong secondary will be led by All-Pro Xavien Howard and Byron Jones at CB along with Nik Needham who refuses to give ground to 2020 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene. Good on Needham, who just keeps working hard! The safety group looks Rowe and impressive rookie Jevon Holland, followed by vet Jason McCourty, Clayton Fejedelem (ST’s ace), Brandon Jones (2020 3rd RD pick), Jamal Perry and Nate WIlliams. Probably 4 will make it here among the safeties with 6 CB’s. Perry and Williams are as good as gone leaving perhaps a battle between Fejedelem and Jones or we carry 5 safeties. CB’s should be Howard, Jones, Needham, Igbinoghene, Coleman, McCourty who can play both CB/S
Special teams will be standout PK Jason Sanders as well as newly acquired P Michael Palardy. Jakeem Grant and Jaylen Waddle as well as Noah Igbinoghene will handle the return duties. Long snapper Blake Ferguson returns.
There will always be some surprise cuts, some of the players I have making the roster won’t and some I have being cut won’t get cut. It’s fun to see how things shape up, let’s just hope that injuries don’t make these decisions for the team.

I don’t think Skura is a surprise cut. Trading for Greg Mancz meant Skura was expendable, and likely at least one of them wasn’t going to make the 53.
Don’t know much about Skura but maybe it is because Mancz is more versatile. Did Mancz play yesterday?
I thought it might be a versatility thing too, Mancz can cover all 3 interior spots. I could be wrong, but I think Skura has only played center. I’m not sure if Mancz played yesterday, but I’m about to rewatch the game right now, and I’ll see if I spot him. Yesterday, all I could see on the oline was how awful our tackles were.
We’re also likely to save a little money since only 400k of his 1.75 mil is guaranteed.
Wouldn’t have traded for Greg Mancz unless he was going to make the team. How many back-up C’s do you need? And maybe Cameron Tom ends up on the PS.
Skura started at C yesterday, Tom is playing C in the 2nd quarter.
Tom played C the rest of the game. Jones and Coleman played the right side all game. I don’t think Mancz played, so his spot was likely already secured.
I should clarify- Coleman lined up at RT all game, but I’m not sure ‘played’ is the right description.
I’m not exaggerating when I say this- our last possession, the final 3 plays, Coleman got beat on all of them- 2nd, 3rd, and 4th down…against bottom of the roster guys. He wasn’t alone though. There was a lot of suck to go around the oline that last possession.

I’ve been biting my tongue on Benardrick McKinney ever since we acquired him. Frankly, I think he sucks, he’s overrated, and it made sense to me to restructure him. However, I did NOT see us cutting him outright. That came out of nowhere to me.

We just can’t seem to get the elite LB who can do it all. I’m none too fond of 1-D LBs, being hurry-ups from the opposing Offense can keep that 1-D LB on the field… whether it be a run-stopper, a pass-rusher, or a pass-defending specialist.

Lot’s of young and new players developing at the same time on the front seven. Just like our OL.
Ogbah 6th (2nd MIA), Wilkins 3rd, Davis 2nd, Sieler 4th (3rd MIA), Butler 5th (1st MIA), Baker 4th, Van Ginkel 3rd, Phillips 1st, Eguavoen 3rd. Then we have some of the other DL and LBs. This defense is in year 3 of the rebuild. We should expect them to get better.
Van Ginkel has really rounded out his game in all phases. He has showed improvement setting the edge and he can drop in coverage and rush the passer. Once Phillips gets up to speed we’ve got the other side set at OLB. I liked the way he moved dropping in coverage in the Cincy game. You could see the coaches wanted him to work on that. He just needs more reps and experience. He looks the part.
LOVE what AVG has become… but he’s not the next Zach Thomas or Brian Urlacher.
He plays on the outside.
We may not have seen the best of AVG yet. He is a multiple LB. He’s another guy that stays active throughout the play. He has shown good instincts.
Saw Talking Heads in 1979 or 1980 at Pismo Beach when they were doing crappy gigs up and down Cali coast. They were all wearing diapers and nothing else. Lol. Got booed a lot…. But they got the last laugh!

I’ll give McKinney this much: he was a good run-stopper… just like Raekwon McMillan.
But then again, we jettisoned McMillan for a reason… 1-D player.
I get all that. No doubt 1-D players are kind of a thing of the past, just like fullbacks. Versatility is coveted.
There are only 8 players on our roster from the Gase era. Our players are still becoming a team. I expect a big jump this year.

I really hated to see McKinney go but Flores knows what D he wants so… it was time to go. Hopefully our run D is better this year but I’m still concerned about our OL and glass WRs. It’s finally time for some pigskin though.
Flores specifically stated he wanted high character guys which is a direct slap in Watson’s face and an easy sign that he’s not ever coming here. Media don’t like their deluded narrative from March to end and want to continue the clickbait because they have zero standards. Someone, related to a person who knows someone who makes football decisions, somewhere in the NFL stated that Watson was discussed by our FO at some point this offseason! Trade must be incoming! The only trustworthy media are meteorologists and they are about as accurate as the liars.

Well, that was definitely a huge surprise yesterday, no way I saw that coming. I’m guessing Eguavoen is a younger, faster guy and I’m guessing Elandon Roberts is on schedule to be ready. Still pretty wild, but the nice thing is I feel no inclination whatsoever to second guess Flores.
McKinney didn’t like the trade to Miami, that’s why they restructured him and voided the last 2 years of his contract
He was making plays in camp, so that didn’t cause the cut

Jevon Holland and Liam Eichenberg will be out there today per Brian Flores
I don’t quite get how Grier does some things. He has gone out and traded for certain guys and then cut them or traded them when all they did is show that they were exactly the player we thought they were. Why sign them in the first place? Does he believe this coaching staff can make them something more? Are his evaluation skills suspect to begin with? Or, is it something else? Shaq Lawson was never going to be a high end sack guy. McKinney was never gonna be anything but a run stopper. Whatever the reasons. He’s made some questionable calls.
The one advantage Mac Jones has going into this situation is that the Patriots can run the ball
But other than that – facing a rookie QB in week 1 is as good as it gets
Mac Jones actually threw 19, 19, and 13 passes in the preseason which is just over 50 passes – he’s very green
We need to be in his face the whole game
And score quickly to put the pressure on him
We need to shut down the run and let X go ball hawking. Big difference between what is open in college and the NFL

Two of Dolphins’ 5 TEs are in question for week 1, with knee issues for Carter and Shaheen. Both should be physically able to play long before Week 4, which means putting them on 53 and moving them to IR (out 3 weeks) does
This makes a lot more sense than trading for him now
His legal issues may be clearer or maybe behind him.
We will have a clearer idea of what we have in Tua.
And Houston can legitimately ask for high compensation.

Which leads me to believe either Watson or the Texans were behind the rumors to try to stir up something. Quite frankly if Tua doesn’t pan out this year then such a move will make sense but I am betting on Tua to do well this year

Dolphins are having about 15-20 guys who won’t be on the 53 participate in practice at this hour, which isn’t uncommon. Practice ends around 2; players cut will be informed by 4.
We’ll start getting some news about cuts around 6pm

I wonder if Coleman had some sort of injury when he played against the Bengals. That might explain why he was so horrible and why we’d bother keeping him on IR instead of releasing him outright.

This is one of my favorite NFL days of the year. We get a bunch of surprise keeps and cuts across the league. We can speculate and guess all we want, but it’s nearly impossible to really know everything that’s going on, even with our own team, no matter how diehard you are. No doubt, the Fins will still have a couple of surprise moves for us.

Yeah, you guys who think it’s all BS may be right, and that we just won’t say anything about anything even if it creates a bunch of hoopla and distraction around the team. I think there is at least some truth to our interest, but I acknowledge it may be entirely media frenzy.
