Preseason Finale – Game 3 – Dolphins @ Bengals

This is it folks! Last game of the 2021 Preseason. Coach Flores has already put it out there most starters will sit so this is the opportunity for all those players on the roster bubble to make their case to be on the 53. It’s also a good chance to see what the depth looks like because during a season, injuries always rear their ugly head and you need solid depth to stay ahead during the season.

Jacoby Brissett will most likely see a fair amount of action and it’s important for him to show he knows the offense and can run the team in Tua’s absence. There’s always the question as to whether the Dolphins will carry 2 or 3 QB’s, my guess would be just 2. Reid Sinnett will end up on the PS and give the Dolphins another precious roster spot. Recent moves have made the WR depth much clearer. The Dolphins placed 2nd year WR Lynn Bowden Jr. on IR ending his season. The Dolphins also waived WR’s Robert Foster and Isaiah Ford. Veteran Allen Hurns was placed on IR earlier so the only bodies left are Will Fuller (Inactive Week 1), DeVante Parker, Albert Wilson, Jaylen Waddle,Preston Williams, Mack Hollins, Jakeem Grant, Kirk Merritt and Malcolm Perry. 9 WR’s , 6 for week 1. One has to go and I feel it will be Malcolm Perry. WIll the big bodied and oft injured Williams hold off equally as large and ace ST’s player Mack Hollins? I don’t think so. Merritt has had a strong preseason so he has a leg up, but there is still game 3 for Perry to change that. However, it looks very much like we’ll have Parker, Wilson, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and Merritt for the first game against the Patriots.

I expect us to carry 4 TE’s, Gesicki, Shaheen, Long and probably Smythe due to his blocking abilities. Myarick could steal his spot, and who knows, maybe it’s Shaheen that gets cut, but it sure seemed like they like Shaheen. Cethan carter also earn as a spot as an H-back/FB/TC, or maybe Long goes on IR because of his injury.

At RB, I think we’ll carry 4 into the regular season, the clear choices right now are the first 3, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Malcolm Brown. After that it’s a real tossup as to whether 2021 7th RD pick rookie Gerrid Doaks makes it, or veteran Patrick Laird or a surprise like Jordan Scarlett. Game 3 will probably have a lot to say about which guy makes it!

On the O-line, still not decided (as far as we know), but I’m sticking with my prediction of Jackson-Kindley-Deiter-Hunt-Eichenberg. Still possible that either Eichenberg starts at LG over Kindley and Jesse Davis starts at RT but I believe it will be the former. Jermaine Eluemunor has also been released. You have to figure we carry at least if not 9 OL so the aforementioned 5 plus Davis, Skura, Little and either Coleman or Pankey.

On defense, despite not seeing a lot of Jaelan Phillips, I still think he’s going to be a major part of our defense. AVG looks ready to be right where he left off last season, and that’s a good thing. I really love our depth at LB with AVG, Baker, McKinney, Phillips, Roberts, Eguavoen, Riley, Biegel. Not sure if Griffin makes that final cut, especially since Roberts has been activated.

On the DL we have the usual Wilkins-Davis-Ogbah, followed by Sieler, Jenkins, Butler and Strowbridge. More than likely that last spot will be up for grabs between Jason Strowbridge and Jonathan Ledbetter, unless we carry 8 DL, which is possible. Benito Jones is still in the mix but Tyshun Render was moved to LB where he faces tough odds against the previously mentioned group.

The Dolphins strong secondary will be led by All-Pro Xavien Howard and Byron Jones at CB along with Nik Needham who refuses to give ground to 2020 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene. Good on Needham, who just keeps working hard! The safety group looks Rowe and impressive rookie Jevon Holland, followed by vet Jason McCourty, Clayton Fejedelem (ST’s ace), Brandon Jones (2020 3rd RD pick), Jamal Perry and Nate WIlliams. Probably 4 will make it here among the safeties with 6 CB’s. Perry and Williams are as good as gone leaving perhaps a battle between Fejedelem and Jones or we carry 5 safeties. CB’s should be Howard, Jones, Needham, Igbinoghene, Coleman, McCourty who can play both CB/S

Special teams will be standout PK Jason Sanders as well as newly acquired P Michael Palardy. Jakeem Grant and Jaylen Waddle as well as Noah Igbinoghene will handle the return duties. Long snapper Blake Ferguson returns.

There will always be some surprise cuts, some of the players I have making the roster won’t and some I have being cut won’t get cut. It’s fun to see how things shape up, let’s just hope that injuries don’t make these decisions for the team.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

I keep hearing this Watson top 5 talk. Last year he finished ranked #12 in QBR behind Mayfield and dude from Raiders, 2019 #7 and 2018 #13. He did have a predicted ranking of #4 for the 2021 season before the BS came up.

I do think Watson’s arm is stronger. Haven’t done it, but, if you watch tape of 25-30 yard throws when Watson steps into it, he has some serious zip/velocity on the ball. Tua is more accurate on crossers but they are about the same on deep balls.

Though, I think he is not worth what Houston is asking even if there were not any allegations. RT has been ranked top 5 last 2 seasons ahead of Watson. Would you give up that for RT?

    • good points, and i wouldnt give up multiple firsts for ANY player in the NFL, its way too risky and usually doesnt work out

if we draft a guy, and he doesnt make it, its only one pick lost

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Maybe what you’re trying to say, since RT has been ranked 5 recently, is the rankings don’t mean much

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Watson, Burrow and Herbert all looked the part of great or future great QBs, that’s more important than the ranking, we know the team around a QB matters

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Why isn’t ORob allowed to have an opinion?

When OD went on for years with his “show me” on the OL he wasn’t treated this way

You don’t have to agree with him, but you also don’t have to be assholes about it either

Mention anything negative about Tua and you guys loose your shit

With all the WR’s we had in camp, I am really surprised we only have 1 signed to PS so far. Especially with more than half of them injury history.

sure you can single out a specific category however you may also want to look at total passing yards where he led the league on a dismal team.
you have to take everything into consideration.

Brady, Mahomes, Rogers, allen, may be the top 4, i’m positive Watson is next on that list making him top 5 QB. can you tell me a better qb than Watson who is not on that list?

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rob, I’m really not trying to disagree with you on Watson’s talent. Guess where we disagree on is he worth the asking price. Outside of the legal BS, I still say no.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

ck out our 1st rnd selections, Iggy, Jackson, Tua, wilkins,
!st rnd picks are not always cracked up to the perceived value, i would trade any 3 of those guys for Watson

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And whether to us or another team that asking price is why Watson hasn’t been dealt. Clearly he does have a lot of value, but not what they are asking. Thought that before but just cold hard fact with the legal situation. And if the reports are right the Texans have not lowered the price tag cause of the legal stuff. How could they not?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They haven’t because they aren’t serious about trading him

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep — At least not serious now. And their smart move may be waiting until the legal stuff is resolved. NFL teams don’t like uncertainty (how long he is out) or scandal (he will come with much less then).

  7. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Watson is undeniably a top 10 QB not sure about top 5 but a very talented QB indeed. I don’t think he is physically any more gifted than Tua I think the difference between he and Tua is experience. I think Tua can be everything Watson but he is not at that level yet. But this is all kind of semantics like BBM it comes down to the issue that the asking price for Watson is too steep even without the legal issues

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rob, not worried about Jackson yet. Iggy, I have more concerns about.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Team value, i think having Watson as our starter is more valuable than having Jackson, Iggy & Wilkins.
my point is giving up 3 firsts for Watson is not out of the question

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

ORob — Might have agreed in March, but Watson could actually go to prison for a stretch. Not worth much to us if competing with Burt Reynolds to be starting QB for the Mean Machine.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

strictly commenting on the football side, no one can speculate about the legal, money has a way to make problems disappear. he could be absolved or could go to prison.
that’s why contingencies would have to be put in place, and maybe that’s the hang up.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And those contingencies would mean the Texans are taking the risk of the legal situation and thus getting less than before. One thing for sure is an NFL suspension is coming. Only Q is when.

  9. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Perry picked up by NE for the sole reason of sharing what he can about our playbook. Belicheat has done this so often heading to first game of a season… regardless of who they are playing, he finds a guy that team cut and brings them in.

  10. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Looks like we can still add 6 players to the PS

Think Grier is working on some guys like Sheard, guys with experience, so if there’s a covud breakout we can put adequate players on the field

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

agreed on Sheard, who has 53 sacks in the NFL and is a thumper like Ogbah at 260 pounds. He ran a 4.69 as a rookie, although I’m sure not that fast any more, and won a Super Bowl with the Patriots when Flo was there, so there’s quality experience for mentorship.

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Malcolm Perry is a lot like Edelman in that he was a college QB, so he knows who should be where, and he has serious quickness in the box. He might be the next Wes Welker, only bigger. I don’t expect him back like when we got Ford back, but then again, you’re dealing with the cheater, sooo …

The one guy on the 53 I can’t understand is Cethan Carter, unless he’s the designated FB or has exceptional ST value. Teams rarely carry 5 TEs.

I think a sneaky improvement the pundits aren’t seeing is Adam Butler and John Jenkins on the DL. They should improve the main weakness we had on D, which was the short yardage run D and the back side cutback runs.

I am hoping I’m right about thinking we improved on the OL, just by Jackson and Kindley maturing and moving Hunt inside. I’m predicting Dieter rounds into at least an adequate center.

Having Mancz, Little, and Robert Jones as backups on the OL is an enormous improvement over last year, and the chance to develop Liam, Jones, and Little is very good forward planning.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

With the concerns about Jackson and Kindley in camp am wondering if we’ll do better than an average OL, but for sure it is young and developing. Was less than average last year and a lot of the same guys. Hope they surprise me. Nice depth though.

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I feel better about Tua playing well this year than I do about our OL. Our left side looked….if not terrible this PS….at the very least inconsistent. Our backups looked so-so against backups, so I’m not thrilled about our depth. Deiter looked like he was able to keep his head above water, but he certainly didn’t impress. Hunt looked good. Davis is Davis. I thought Liam actually looked fairly good at RT but still like a rookie trying to learn…no issue with that because that’s what he is. I do believe we’ll see an improved OL by the end of the year, but there’s a whole lot of work to be done yet. If we can’t establish some semblance of a running game, this offense….and Tua…will likely struggle. I’m not looking for greatness. I just want functional. We didn’t see much of that in the PS.
    ***
Tua isn’t a scrambler, but he does have some ability to manage the pocket. No doubt teams will try to push the pocket on him…as they do with every rookie QB….especially shorter ones. Deiter will be earning his paycheck this year because he’ll be tested. Tua will have to get the ball out on time. His YPA will probably be fairly low this season. That’s okay because he really just needs to focus on getting the ball out and letting guys make plays. If we see him eating the ball a lot and taking sacks…then I’ll get worried. I’d rather see him just throwing it away. I don’t think this offense is anywhere near where they need to be to be a true playoff caliber team. This is still a developmental sort of season, to me. Still, I think we’re headed in the right direction.

  26. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Piggy,

    Awesome phone case!

I looked at Watsons play last year and he’s not a top 5 QB. Maybe a top 5 young QB right now but the legal issues will hurt his career. He’s very talented and might get there depending on legal issues but his stats were inflated like Winston’s the year before with better ball security (very important and one of his best traits) , and the need to keep scoring with their terrible defense.

He played bad teams or bad defenses most of the year and looked bad against Chicago, Cleveland, GB, KC, Balt, and Pitt. He looked all world though against the bad teams and was the primary reason they won any games. I could see Tua getting to his level in 2-3 years tho without putting his career at risk with wondering D disease( sorry D!). Great player but no one can sell me the need for him.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Goes along with what some of us have said about Watson’s stats being bloated, because they were going against a lot of soft Ds

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

But put Watson on the Fins and we become an SB contender

If Tua is who I think he is, we’ll also be a SB contender

We know who Watson is, at times he looks great, at times he struggles with accuracy and consistency

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yep. I’m not sure he plays the next two years and then we have a younger guy that may be comparable.

    Wes Welker 40 time — 4.65 seconds

You need to have 2 of these 3 to be a good slot

    Speed, toughness, quickness

    Welker was quick and tough

    Perry is quick

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think of Perry as being more analogous to Edelman. They are bigger than Welker and former QBs, so they really understand Offensive play calling and where the QB likes to look up and see his safety valve.

How many times did teams almost have Brady for a sack? only to see Edelman standing in the one empty void in the 4-7 yard range for the first down or at least to escape the loss of yardage.

Plus Perry was a triple option QB who ran for 614 yards in 2 years, much of that in very tough inside running as the trigger man keeping the ball. So he can take a hit and play the wildcat QB.

I’m sure bellycheat would love to get revenge on us for the Ronnie Brown wildcat game.

    BBM,
Deiter didn’t show much power in PS, and it’s something he struggled with playing guard. If you don’t have a C who can maintain pocket depth or get push in the run game, it really negatively impacts the whole OL. It will be a key to how well this offense can do this season. We may see them needing to move the pocket and roll Tua out.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I think Dieter beating out a guy who was a starter for the Ravens for 4 years is encouraging.

    New Age and Steve

For me – I can’t really argue Watson is not a very good QB

Don’t know if top 5 is correct but I do like the QB a lot as a player, and where some one ranks is hardly objective so…

But more than anything else, I just don’t know how good or bad Tua will be yet. Hearing people like Colon Cowturd say “I don’t see it” is not the way anyone who values being taken seriously should talk about a young QB

I know there a skill set that translates to a great NFL QB for Tua
I do t know that it will happen

Hearing people write him off is nauseating now
Tom Brady was a 6th round pick
Ryan Leaf was the 2 pick

It’s hard to predict what a QB can achieve
Bill parcells famously said something about them not growing on trees

The message is: no one knows
    Not even the experts
And the blowhards certainly don’t know either

I just want to see the guy play and make a decision on his future over the next season
The question always ends up whether future investment is worth it

Take Tannehill for example, even though he has blossomed in Tennessee, I think parting ways with him when we did was the right move – not bc he didn’t have potential but bc I didn’t think we should be the one investing in it anymore

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Watson doesn’t have Tua’s accuracy, that’s the biggest difference I think in the two

Some say accuracy is the most important trait in a QB, and I tend to agree

As long as you have pocket presence, and teams can’t sit on the short pass, accuracy can move you up and down the field, like we saw in PS

I don’t want to have anything to do with Watson, unless Tua stinks it up this year and I put the chance of that happening at 1%

We saw Tua last year as the little engine, that almost did even with the handicaps of health, wr corps, knowledge of PB… but with everything he’s gained over the offseason I’d be shocked, if he doesn’t turn out to be the QB we were hoping to tank for

  35. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think we cut Skura the minute we traded for Mancz.
Key stat: Allowed just 18 total pressures across 1,120 snaps over the regular season.

    Greg Mancz

Another star of the PFF college grading, Mancz somehow went undrafted in 2015, but started last season for the Texans at center and had five perfect games of pass protection as well as grading solidly as a run-blocker over the year. His PFF grade of 84.2 was good enough to rank eighth in the NFL, higher than multiple Pro Bowl players. Mancz didn’t allow a sack or hit across two playoff games.

  36. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Each day we’re gonna make the decision we think is best. Again, it’s a one-step process. Deshaun’s been here every day. He’s been in training camp every day. He’s been in the building, he’s been in meetings, he’s been around his teammates. We’re gonna take it one day at a time. I’m not going to get into a lot of speculation about what has happened, what didn’t happen. It’s a waste of everybody’s time, quite frankly, I think there’s more important things to talk about. We’re gonna take it one day at a time, we’re gonna do what we feel is best for our team and organization. I would say there’s no finite answer, no definitive answer here at this point and that’s how we’re gonna handle it.”

That article was from 2017 and listed 1 player for each team.
It had the following “Secret Superstar” for the Dolphins
    CB Byron Maxwell

    2016 snaps: 846

Key stat: Allowed just three catches for 23 yards against Brandon Marshall in Week 9 on six targets

Maxwell had a quietly impressive season despite actually being benched in the midst of it by the Dolphins. He didn’t begin the season well, and was sat down in Week 4, but from that point onward he allowed more than 30 yards just twice over the rest of the season and never more than 42 yards in a game. The longest catch he allowed after being benched was 19 yards and he amassed eight pass breakups and two interceptions over that time.

I thought Deiter and Skura looked fairly comparable in the PS. I don’t think either looked great. But, Skura was typically playing against lesser opponents, so it’s hard to compare. As I said a few days ago, Skura gives you almost zero versatility, so it’s hard to justify keeping him as a backup. Mancz can supposedly play G/C, so he gives you that flexibility that Skura doesn’t. Skura didn’t exactly play well for the Ravens, and they let him go….so there’s that. I think his injury of a couple years ago has affected his play. I think it’s more a reflection on their comfort level with Deiter that they put Skura on the PS. He’s a break in case of emergency vet.

  53. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – You’re absolutely entitled to your opinion. What I don’t get is why you hold Tua to standards you don’t hold other players to. When we got Malcolm Brown you were talking about how great he will be here because he’s a tough runner. He’s averaged less than 30 yards per game throughout his entire career which spans 6 seasons but he will be great here. Based on what? Tua will suck because he didn’t look good last season and averaged 100 yards a game as you say. He played one season as a rookie coming off a major injury w/o training camp and preseason and you base the trajectory of his career solely by what he did last season. This is what I have a problem with. If you were consistent across the board I’d understand your opinion but you’re not.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Why engage him it is pointless

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

It is pointless because the gazillion other reasons given that Tua might be successful compared to last is based on the unwavering belief in one aspect of game, his throwing mechanics.

It’s a singular minded focus on his unproven POV. Everyone else’s ability to express their opinion or observation is never considered as plausible because they don’t agree with him. He never even entertains the idea he might be wrong.

Now, imo, he is making himself the victim and others on the blog are enabling it.

Skura ended up on a practice squad. All 32 teams got to check out his tape…. not one put in a waiver claim or signed him to their 53 for the vet minimum. Not trying to crush the guy, but is what it is.

Stanger, Skura is a vested veteran. He is not subject to the waiver wire. (4 accrued years which is another discussion) so that no other teams “claimed him” really isn’t a knock because they couldn’t.

for example, someone in the workplace gets covid, but doesnt tell the other workers, and exposes them, or someone thats lazy, and lies that they have covid to get some time off, etc

or someone gets covid, but doesnt like masks, and spreads it to others in the grocery store, gas stations, etc

the only way to stop it is to keep your self safe, and DONT spread it to others. we have a moral obligation to be honest about this in the workplace, family , etc

we may not like wearing masks, i sure dont, but i dont want to spread it to others, possibly children that cant get vaccinated

Picking ninth overall in the opening round, Hulk Smash had a decent showing and assembled a team that has the ability to reach the postseason. They aimed for a roster with balance at key positions, picking up a quarterback, two running backs, and two wide receivers within the first five rounds. By the time the draft was completed, Hulk Smash ended up with the highest-scoring quartet of wide receivers in the league.

    1
    DRAFT SUMMARY
A good performance on draft day by the GM of Team Toba turned the sixth overall pick into a projected first-place finish. With six wide receivers on the roster, they have both quality and quantity at that spot. Their receivers are projected to average 228.34 points this season, a bit more than the league average of 227.44. Elsewhere on the roster, Team Toba was able to secure the highest-scoring pair of tight ends in the league.
Scoffing at traditional fantasy strategy, Team Toba neglected to select a running back in the draft’s first three rounds.
Matthew Stafford may have been a steal in the 13th round, with an overall pick of 126th compared to an ADP of 79.8).
Tua Tagovailoa, chosen with the 55th overall pick, may have been somewhat of a gamble. Across all NFL.com leagues, his ADP was 141.9.

I’d like to see us start the game with Brown in the backfield, 2-TE and run it. Get the OL amped up to get after them and knock them off the ball. Attack rather than react. Then see where we stand and go from there.
    _____

I’d like to see this too, but I’m not sure I want to see Brown in the backfield. I haven’t seen him look consistently reliable enough.

  79. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

“The position has become more capable of creating on their own, and Mac Jones is not that guy. He is going to be your more traditional pocket-passing quarterback that is going to rely on accuracy and mental acumen to pick you apart,” McElroy said.

“The beauty is, that’s not a dinosaur. What’s a dinosaur are the guys with absolutely no mobility — the guys 6-foot-5, statues in the pocket, absolute cannon arms that can’t process really quickly. Those are the guys that are a dying breed. But if you can process quick, if you’re really accurate, if you can move in the pocket and if you can anticipate where receivers are going to be, then having less-than-ideal mobility is not the end of the world.”

Hmmmm…..new ways to think about the modern QB. What a concept…..lol!

  80. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

How much do you guys see facing rookie QB’s in NE and NY will benefit the team this year? Do you think it is enough of an avantage to swing both games with each team, or do you guys think the teams will be good enough to overcome the potential rookie mistakes?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      So are the jags
No the patriots might be bad too

We did pretty good last year against QBs like Herbert and Lock

I think it’s the type of games that Flores salivates over

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I think we’ve watched this team long enough to know that rookie QB’s starting for opposing division teams aren’t automatic wins. On paper it should give us an advantage, but I know there are tons of factors that go into a game.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I think Miami will benefit greatly against both teams. NY has no offensive identity and their defense was hit hard over the summer. Daley may turn the Jets around eventually 9if he does he’ll be the first), but not this year. He has to build his roster. NE has set up to be a TE-centric, run heavy offense. I’m sure the first game will be take away the run, make the rookie beat Miami’s most excellent secondary. Second NE game may be more interesting, although I still can’t name a NE WR off the top of my head.
