2021 Season – Game 1 – Dolphins @ Patriots

The roster has been trimmed to the 53 man roster and our team is ready to begin the 2021 NFL season, it’s longest season ever, 17 games. The Dolphins head to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough to face off against their long time division rival New England Patriots. Bill Belichick always has a surprise and this season it was cutting then starting QB Cam Newton to make way for the newly drafted QB of the future, Mac Jones. By doing so, Belichick has now enabled a division of fine young QB’s, most drafted within the first 10 picks of their respective drafts, except Jones who fell to #15. Josh Allen, the elder at 25 (Pick #7), Tua Tagovailoa next at 23 (Pick #5), Mac Jones who just turns 23 today (Pick #15) and the baby of the group, Zach Wilson who is 22 (Pick #2). This should make the AFC East a competitive division for some time.

On to the Dolphins roster. We speculated for months as to how it would shake it and we all got it mostly right, but there are always surprises. The first bomb was LB Benardrick McKinney getting released. I’d say the second biggest surprise to me was WR Lynn Bowden going on IR and out for the season. It was a good move which allows us to stash him for another season, but it also makes you wonder if the kid has it or not. Next year will almost surely be his last chance. OLB Vince Biegel also went on the IR ending his season as well. WR Allen Hurns was also shelved on the IR with a wrist injury which made their decision to keep 6 WR’s relatively easy. I did think Kirk Merritt would make the 53 but he ended up on the PS. So, this our roster now . . .

So that’s the 53 man roster and this year the practice squad has been expanded by the NFLPA and the NFL accordingly to 16 players, including veteran players. Our PS consists of . . .

DE Jason Strowbridge, WR, Kirk Merritt, C Cameron Tom, RB Gerrid Doaks, RB Patrick Laird, QB Reid Sinnett, DT Durval Quieroz-Neto, OL Adam Pankey, LB Shaquem Griffin, DE Jabaal Sheard, CB Tino Ellis, WR Brandon Powell, LB Calvin Munson, LB Milo Eifler, OL Kion Smith, CB Javaris Davis.

So the Dolphins travel to New England, which formerly was a house of horrors, but we have been flipping that script in recent years. We did lose last season to Cam Newton and the RPO for which we had no answer 20-11. We upset the Patriots 27-24 in ’19 with a Fitzpatrick to Gesicki TD with :24 seconds remaining. In ’18 we were massacred 38-7 with HC Adam Gase, as if we expected any different. Gase in over his head at every stop in the NFL as head coach. I’m hoping we have something closer to the 2019 game, but I’d like to beat them by at least a TD, send them a message! The Patriots will have their new QB along with 2 new TE’s, Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, as well as WR Nelson Agholor. I would expect both TE’s to get a lot of looks as BB tries to exploit mismatches. Besides, the TE is a young QB’s best friend. On our side on offense I expect us to have long drives moving the chains with a good combo of rushing and passing, and I expect our TE’s to be busy as well, along with RB Myles Gaskin getting lots of touches in the rushing and passing game. Both defenses will be similar in approach. Create pressure from where it’s not too obvious, disguising blitzes and pass rushers. I want to see a crisp game from our squad and most of all I want them to make Mac Jones look very bad. We don’t him gaining confidence beating a better team in game 1, and yes, I said we’re the better team. Instead, I want the new Tua to have a great game and give NE a taste of what’s to come for the next decade or so of Miami Dolphins dominance!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Tua’s top receivers were Mack Hollins, Lynn Bowden and Isaiah Ford. On Sunday, even without Will Fuller, Jaylen Waddle, DeVante Parker and Albert Wilson should be dressed.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hollins had a great camp and is stud on STs. But as far as all of them as WRs, they don’t have much production. You won’t find any of them on anyone’s fantasy teams because of the lack of production. You might be the only person who thinks that’s a quality group of WRs. They’re role players at best.

The #Saints are re-signing WR Chris Hogan today, source says. Impressed them this summer. Was always the plan to bring him back as part of the roster reshuffle following the cut to 53.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He likes playing against top competition. He’s battled Gilmore quite well and he feeds off of it. If Parker could stay healthy he’d be one of the best WRs in the game. He just always has something nagging him which causes him to miss games and can’t play at 100%.

  11. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Chris Hogan has bigger concerns than how his wife looks.

  12. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

“Tagovailoa blossomed before our eyes during training camp and the preseason, showcasing accuracy, anticipation and leadership in Miami’s new offense. Expect Tagovailoa to show he has improved.”
    – Sun Sentinel’s Omar Kelly on Tua 🐬

Omar is not the most complimentary person.

  13. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I like Mack Hollins. He works hard and he is versatile. However he is far from our best WR. He is a ham and egger. He has good size but not great speed for a WR. He is a little small for a TE. His hands are not the best. There is a reason the WR starved Eagles let him go in the first place.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This game and video shows a lot of good things about what to expect on offense. A methodical get 1st downs type offense to set up big plays. Not much difference than what Joe Montana and Tom Brady succeeded with. The next step for Tua is more deep throws but I think they will come. But the more important throws are 3rd down and 2-minute. Those are the stats that help you score points and win games. Watch Chris Simms break it down after the first video. This is the difference that we’ve seen in Tua.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ORob, have you not seen me say I like Hollins? Yes I saw that catch he made against the Bears. I said he was making the team on STs alone back in June and he solidified that by playing well at WR in TC and the PS. He’s not Julio Jones though. LOL

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not relying on Fuller to be our go-to-guy, he’s a speed playmaker. I want him along with all the WR, TE and RB’s to do. Do your job. Move the ball. That’s your job. It starts at QB and Tua knows that. Let’s go!!! Go Phins!!!!

      🤪

Funny, but don’t underestimate there D as the article does, they were great in PS.

Their front 7 was all over it, including Judon, who was a terror.

With their top CB out we should find success in the air.

If the cheats only score 17 points I like our chances

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think the difference week 1 will be Tua’s escapability vs Jones lack of

  21. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cheats had 3 significant opt outs last year, linebacker Dont’a Hightower, safety Patrick Chung and offensive tackle Marcus Cannon

Those 3+ all of their FA signings and Mac Jones make them a completely different team

You know the big cheat will have them ready to go

    Don’t take them for granted

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With Godchaux in we won’t be seeing much pressure up the middle, Tua’s lane for escaping

Big problem will be who is going to slow down Judon

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think the pats are banking on being a tough defensive team with a solid ground game

But in order to do that and win they have to limit mistakes as well.

I think it’s going to be a hard fought game, but we can take control if we force Mac Jones into mistakes

I also think we can take control by scoring early

I’m gonna be a little upset if we go Through The half and it’s a low scoring tight game but that is very realistic if we don’t either force turnovers or score early

So much is riding on what we might do vs what we’ve done in the past

Trevor Lawrence ranked higher than Tua, while he may have more upside, playing on the Jags he’s going to suck this year

An article ranking triplets has us 26th, but NE is 32. Most of our units are deeper, than top heavy

  41. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Sad story. I was waiting to this week to say anything until I heard more.

My wife’s friend from TN and the rest of her family have not wanted to get vaccinated. However, her daughter had transferred to a college in Virginia and was required to get vaccinated in order to attend. After her first shot of the Moderna vaccine she was found dead the next day in her bed. They ruled out any allergic reaction. Her autopsy just revealed a significantly enlarged heart. I thought that was just a side affect of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

I know this is said to be rare but actually how rare? They don’t check everyone after they get the vaccine to see if they have developed myocarditis or even pericarditis. They don’t really know and say it is rare based on the very small # who have died or hospitalized after getting the vax in relation to the millions who have received it. How many people have had this condition and did not know. No one knows. Fucking sad man.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Sad, but I am more pissed that a mandate to attend a school she is paying for has ended her life on Earth!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t know about suing Steve. Man, she was such a beautiful young girl with a great head on her shoulders. She was a good athlete and a cheerleader. She was only going to school in VA cause her BF got a basketball scholarship there. Otherwise she would have went to college close to home in TN that has just a small amount of schools with that mandate.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It is sad as anything. Based on the studies about that condition impacts only a few out of every million people who get vaccinated. Doesn’t make it any the less tragic.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      Sorry to hear, bbm.

Not to be nosey, but how can you rule out an “allergic” reaction? I’m mystified.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Not sure either Krishna. The mom said that was what they were told cause there were no signs of her airway being affected. I’m with you on the ruling out an allergic reaction though. It was an adverse reaction of some kind.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Abso-fucking-lutely! IMO, of course, and it’s a professional one!

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know anaphylaxis occurs mainly 15-30 min after a shot but she got the shot in the morning and was with her mom all day.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I put “allergic” in quotes for a reason, adverse is a better term. I’m sure there was a toxicolgy report to rule out foul play. You never know what happens on college campuses and their surrounding hoods.

I just don’t think or know how you ever know what triggered this response by the body resulting in death. But, to try and rule out a causal effect from the vaccine because it wasn’t an anaphylactic response is not responsible either. The fact that it was within 24 hours of receiving such a cocktail is highly suspect. Imo.

    • Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

So sad BBM.. I had pericarditis last year and it was no joke. I was in the er twice in one week. If you have underlying conditions you should consult with your doctor before any jab. But the problem is some people don’t know they have these conditions until after the fact.

The willingness of Armando to report the details of a trade offer which may have never been made are honestly disappointing and exactly why I’m glad he’s not writing for the herald anymore

There’s not even a hint that he doubts what was reported from “nfl sources”

He could have easily written that article and said that it was reported or rumored but neither the Texans nor the Dolphins acknowledged that they were ever discussing the trade – but instead he’s reporting it and not questioning it

I also didn’t see anything new in that article?

What’s the new plateau of weird he is talking about. It doesn’t sound like anything new happened that we didn’t already know

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Edge Brennan Scarlett making the team was a nice surprise. He’s kind of a backup/role type of player. But maybe he’s one of those guys who can have his best season in his 6th season.

We really need Jaelan Phillips to be what we drafted him for. Not sure how many snaps he gets early on, but in time we need that to increase because he makes impact plays. I think Van Ginkel is going to have a very good season.

Armando put out a ‘title’ that made it seem like new news when there was none. But that’s his job. To attract readers. We all know he had and maybe still does have good insider info. on the Phins for years. That intel I appreciated, but his editorial stuff was always fluff to me.

A handful of members of the 2021 Miami Dolphins practice squad should be operating at a higher level of focus this week; because they may well get “the call” this week with Miami set to clash with the Patriots on Sunday. The Dolphins have protected three players on the practice squad; a feature that prevents other teams from poaching PS players each week for a promotion to the active roster. The three players Miami protected?

Ravens TE Mark Andrews signs four-year, $56M extension

Entering the league, he was mainly a receiving threat like Gesicki. He has developed into a well rounded TE and is now the 3rd highest paid TE in the league.

Gesicki has improved a little in blocking but not nearly as much as Andrews has. Does Gesicki get paid like Andews? More? Or less?

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We don’t have to re-sign Gesicki right now. He doesn’t want out of town either. He can play for a contract in 2021 or get franchised. Not worried about him.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Under the radar player for us is DeVante Parker healthy and playing his game with Tua. He’s my sleeper. I know he gets banged up. If he’s good most of the time, I see Parker having a big year. Tua’s accuracy and his skills. 🙂

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What I like about Parker in this offense is, that he’s an outlet downfield for Tua, even when not open

In years past, with RT, our 3rd down O was atrocious on all accounts

I’d watch the receivers jog downfield trying to maneuver between 7 or 8 dbs, RT having no one open causing him to hold it too long, then sack or throw away

RT had no clue had to use Parker the right way, then Fitz came and surprise, surprise Parker has a big year

Tua has learned how to use him like Fitz did

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That did happen but to be fair, RT is doing just fine in TEN with Brown. Sometimes it’s timing.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Brown gets open

RT has issues with pocket presence and accuracy, as a result, fitting the ball in tight spaces is a problem

When he has a running game, he can be very successful with play action

He is pretty good throwing outside the pocket too

  79. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We have our QB in Tua. Brissett is here on a 1 year contract. It is possible we roll with Sinnett as the #2 next year. With that thought, we would need to draft a QB late or UDFA. Three candidates I am keeping an eye on are:

Jake Haener, Senior, Fresno State. He’s completed 72.5% of his passes with 4 TD’s 0 INT through 2 games. This past game, he was down 21-6 in 2nd qtr against #11 Oregon and brought them back to take a 24-21 lead in the 4th qtr. Oregon came back and won 31-24. He had good #’s last year also during a shortened season.

Tanner Mordecai, Junior, SMU. He was stuck behind Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts and Spencer Rattler at Oklahoma so he transferred to SMU and won the starting job there. He completed 80% of his passes for 317 yards, 7 TD’s and 0 INT’s in his first game for SMU. Yes, it was against a smaller school but the dude has game.

Bailey Zappe, Senior, Western Kentucky. He transferred from Houston Baptist. He had good numbers there last year and just ok before that. His first game for Western Kentucky he completed 80% of his passes for 424 yards, 7 TD’s and 1 INT.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Accuracy in college is one thing, but if these guys don’t have NFL arms, like Doughty lacked, they won’t make it

What’s the arm talent of these 3?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Zach Wilson had big numbers too his senior season against inferior talent, looked the same way in PS and has a big arm, so his skill may work in the NFL

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Steve, Mordecai has the strongest arm and probably best all round. Haener probably the smallest arms of the 3 but has the best footwork and a threat to run. Good at RPO. Real quick and good pocket presence. Very accurate on crossers. Zappe would be an UDFA and a project. Strong arm to all areas but poor footwork.

  80. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If PS is any indication, think Parker will loose some targets to Gesicki, the other TEs, and the RBs

Tua seems to have learned the take what the D gives you method, it works for Brady and with his accuracy, why not?

Cheats get in cover 0 and he’ll make them pay over the top, cover 2 and he’ll hit the shorter stuff, with rac possibilities

I see short stuff as Tua’s bread and butter, with an occasional downfield throw mixed in when open or a 50 50 ball to Parker

Parker is going to have to get more separations, if he wants more targets

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If Parker is healthy for the most part he gets about 70 catches this year. Slants 7-10, the standard out – 10 yards, and the fake in or out and go route down the sideline for high point chunk yardage. When he was younger and not injured he was a great deep post target. Not sure he’ll do a lot of that anymore. Gesicki is going to be the seam and post target. Waddle, Wilson, Fuller and Grant – get the ball in the hands of speed.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Unless we throw significantly more passes than last year, I find it hard to believe any 1 guy will get a large amount

We have too many weapons to force throws to 1 guy

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think 70 is a crazy number for one guy. It’s not like one guy catching 140+. LOL

That said, I can’t say Parker will stay healthy enough to do that. Williams and Hollins will likely pitch in. Gesicki at TE. What about Waddle, Wilson, Fuller and Grant? Speed!!!!

I know Fuller will not be active for game one. But he’ll be part of the season.

We have lots of weapons at every skill position.

It always comes down to pass pro and the run game – the backs as receivers too.

We’re going to be hard to defend. Tua picks his target regardless of position.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua picks his target based on who is open, starting with his first read, but backs and TEs tend to be open more than WRs, because they don’t usually have anyone lined up on them at LOS

DeVante is one of my favorite players, he’s essentially our ‘#1 WR’, but I agree that he could be a sleeper for us.

Me? I’m going with Albert Wilson. He may not be a redzone target, but he’s going to move the chains between the 20s and I think very few opponents are game-planning for him specifically.

Think you just get vaccinated to keep the disease from being majorly destructive

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

From what I’ve read months ago, You can expect plenty of mutations of Covid

That’s just the way viruses work and as long as the virus can survive in any host, it can mutate. The 1918 influenza pandemic actually had a couple of waves over the course of a few years bc of mutations. But that pandemic was much more deadly. It’s a good reference though if you want to look at history and guess or try to predict what happens

If vaccines are not effective against that variant – the possibility of developing one, in time, that is effective exists. So I’m not personally concerned about that but I know different people feel differently about vaccines and won’t be excited about getting a new one

I’m sure people are going to be frustrated about that – but that’s just part of dealing with the unknown and new issues.

Even with new mutations, I think we are on pace to getting past the whole thing in time

Buffalo is my SB pick, and I give us next to no chance to win the division, so I’ll be looking at all other games through a WC lens in terms of who I want to win or lose. I think Pitt is on the bubble of being a WC team, and we might be too, so I’d rather have Pitt lose.

If Pitt wins, and we win week 1 and 2, I’ll revise my opinion about our chances to win the division and start looking at those games differently, but that is the way I see it right now.
