2021 Season – Game 1 – Dolphins @ Patriots

The roster has been trimmed to the 53 man roster and our team is ready to begin the 2021 NFL season, it’s longest season ever, 17 games. The Dolphins head to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough to face off against their long time division rival New England Patriots. Bill Belichick always has a surprise and this season it was cutting then starting QB Cam Newton to make way for the newly drafted QB of the future, Mac Jones. By doing so, Belichick has now enabled a division of fine young QB’s, most drafted within the first 10 picks of their respective drafts, except Jones who fell to #15. Josh Allen, the elder at 25 (Pick #7), Tua Tagovailoa next at 23 (Pick #5), Mac Jones who just turns 23 today (Pick #15) and the baby of the group, Zach Wilson who is 22 (Pick #2). This should make the AFC East a competitive division for some time.

On to the Dolphins roster. We speculated for months as to how it would shake it and we all got it mostly right, but there are always surprises. The first bomb was LB Benardrick McKinney getting released. I’d say the second biggest surprise to me was WR Lynn Bowden going on IR and out for the season. It was a good move which allows us to stash him for another season, but it also makes you wonder if the kid has it or not. Next year will almost surely be his last chance. OLB Vince Biegel also went on the IR ending his season as well. WR Allen Hurns was also shelved on the IR with a wrist injury which made their decision to keep 6 WR’s relatively easy. I did think Kirk Merritt would make the 53 but he ended up on the PS. So, this our roster now . . .

So that’s the 53 man roster and this year the practice squad has been expanded by the NFLPA and the NFL accordingly to 16 players, including veteran players. Our PS consists of . . .

DE Jason Strowbridge, WR, Kirk Merritt, C Cameron Tom, RB Gerrid Doaks, RB Patrick Laird, QB Reid Sinnett, DT Durval Quieroz-Neto, OL Adam Pankey, LB Shaquem Griffin, DE Jabaal Sheard, CB Tino Ellis, WR Brandon Powell, LB Calvin Munson, LB Milo Eifler, OL Kion Smith, CB Javaris Davis.

So the Dolphins travel to New England, which formerly was a house of horrors, but we have been flipping that script in recent years. We did lose last season to Cam Newton and the RPO for which we had no answer 20-11. We upset the Patriots 27-24 in ’19 with a Fitzpatrick to Gesicki TD with :24 seconds remaining. In ’18 we were massacred 38-7 with HC Adam Gase, as if we expected any different. Gase in over his head at every stop in the NFL as head coach. I’m hoping we have something closer to the 2019 game, but I’d like to beat them by at least a TD, send them a message! The Patriots will have their new QB along with 2 new TE’s, Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, as well as WR Nelson Agholor. I would expect both TE’s to get a lot of looks as BB tries to exploit mismatches. Besides, the TE is a young QB’s best friend. On our side on offense I expect us to have long drives moving the chains with a good combo of rushing and passing, and I expect our TE’s to be busy as well, along with RB Myles Gaskin getting lots of touches in the rushing and passing game. Both defenses will be similar in approach. Create pressure from where it’s not too obvious, disguising blitzes and pass rushers. I want to see a crisp game from our squad and most of all I want them to make Mac Jones look very bad. We don’t him gaining confidence beating a better team in game 1, and yes, I said we’re the better team. Instead, I want the new Tua to have a great game and give NE a taste of what’s to come for the next decade or so of Miami Dolphins dominance!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Central Texas football is bad ass!

I bet every offense in the NFL wishes they could play the Dallas D. TB is a great team but Dallas making them look unbeatable.

Tampa looks unstoppable on o and unbeatable on d.

Ah, it’s nice to have Jason Sanders…

  6. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

He’s a nice guy, older than i would have thought, with his wife, unassuming, didn’t know who they were or if they might be listening to me. Somehow Dallas Cowboys came and I was just being me, and spouting why I was not a fan of JJ and won’t be while he’s the owner. Yada, yada. They agreed. It was chilled.

There was a commercial with Baker in it that showed up during the Bucs v Cowboys game. Everyone noticed but me, lmao. Dad just nodded. Again, reserved.

I’ve seen him and wife there before…lol.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim, you serious about Swift? That’s crazy!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yeah, do a search on Twitter for deandre swift and you can see people talking about it

But it looks like it’s just a nasty reckless rumor

Believe it or not, the source of it might be people trying to sink his fantasy status so they can draft him – Which is horrible

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Carton and Evan were talking about it today. The story is someone was going to rob Swift at a club or whatever in Philly, he supposedly had a lot of cash on him. Some witnesses and tipsters said they saw Swift shoot the guy a couple of times. When he found out the guy wasn’t dead he came out and finished him off. This was back in the earlier summer. But as of now the police don’t have enough on it other than that tip.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If the guy trying to rob him had a gun it’s self defense, the first couple of shots

Another athlete playing big shot it seems

  8. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

SMH at McCarthy. Stupid attempt when the guy has missed two short kicks already. He was also stupid for having Tampa re-kick that punt earlier instead of taking it at the 14.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hope it’s just rumors because that’s fucked up, and I might be fucked too. 😜

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t know what the facts are if any, so I really don’t know, I’ve just heard murmurs about it

But it has the stench of bullshit – and I’m a skeptic generally so….

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah or he’d be deep shit. Sounds like someone that has a beef with Swift trying to fuck his life up. Similar to what happened to Tunsil but worse.

  10. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

So am I seeing this right

Is Suh playing DE for the Bucs in a 3-4 base?
Isn’t that something he could not do for us?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They also play a formation where it’s him and Vea inside with two edge guys. Suh can play in a 3-4 but we were 4-3 when he was here.

  11. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That was a bad throw into traffic.

  12. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dallas is not good in Cover 0. That’s two TDs allowed with that coverage, Brown was the other.

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

What kind of industrial strength viagra is Tom Brady taking to play like this at his age?

  22. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Brady setting up a game winning FG and forcing us to hear nothing but media pundits obsessed with him for a few days is vintage misery

The way this game ends is virtually guaranteed

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wow biggest play of the game and they don’t call OPI

Proof it was the DB tried to grab the wr after the push, you wouldn’t do that on a flop

  24. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Of course….

  25. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Absolutely should have been offensive PI, and f^ck the ref that was about 3 yards away with a perfect view for swallowing his whistle to give Brady his storybook ending, but Dallas did nothing to help themselves.

Twice on their last drive, players went out of bounds instead of going down in bounds. No situational intelligence. Lamb on his big catch and run, and I can’t remember the player on the 2nd one. Losing that time or the time outs would have drastically changed the Bucs final drive.

Actually, Dallas should have won this game handily, but they shot themselves in the foot over and over again.

  26. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m not a fan of his, but Dak looked really good.

  30. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I just want to see how our offense looks and if they are up to the task. We haven’t had a settled offense in decades.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Between Waddle, Wilson & Fuller there’s going to be a lot of speed on the field

      The offense really has potential

      It’s been a while

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gaskin isn’t exactly fast, but he’ll be faster than anyone covering him, so another speed advantage, then turn it up a notch with Ahmed

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And we may not this year, because we won’t be able to run it with consistency, but as you saw Dallas last night, we should be able to throw it and score points

Tua on a 3 step drop, bam to Waddle for 8, 3 step again to Wilson for 7, then to Fuller for 10. You wanna bring the safety up Gesicki for 25 down the seam, then Gaskin out in flat for 20

We’ll be stretching teams vertically and horizontally this year, we saw against Atlanta starting off horizontally with Waddle and Gaskin, then to Gesicki downfield

  31. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i had never seen so many passing attempts by both teams than i saw last night.

  32. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

No wonder why we have umpteen DBs

  33. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We’ve had speed on the field before and it amounted to nothing so when people keep repeating “speed, we got speed” it doesn’t mean a whole lot to me. All of that speed comes with injury concerns, so first they have to stay healthy, then they have to be be used properly. From what I’ve seen in the preseason it gives me hope. But, it all goes back to my original point that I want to see how it looks in real action and is it up to the task. The time for potential and projections are over. It’s time to show they belong.

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

For those saying Tua shouldn’t have played last year, because he was injured, I’m glad he played

It was good he got his feet wet, now year 2 he’ll know what to expect

  35. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Dak had very good stats last night, but didn’t seem to have much velocity and accuracy, believe he’s not 100%

Think Tua had more velocity in PS and his accuracy is much better, than what Dak showed last night

Dak is big, and can sit in the pocket and take the hit while completing a pass, that’s where he stands out

  36. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    We’ve made it big nationally😁

ESPN did 20k simulations and on 1 of them we go 10-7, make the playoffs, but lose to Chiefs 27-24

ESPN simulation of 2021 season projects a Dolphins’ playoff berth

  37. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

“America is all about speed, hot nasty bad-ass speed” – Eleanor Roosevelt

  38. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think Dak looked good not great at all. He had many passes off the mark when he had no one in his face. I agree, he didn’t look quite 100%. In all, it was the Dallas D that let them down and a major no call by the ref on the last drive.

The best five OL will play, Coach says. We have a pretty good idea of what that is right now and we’ll practice that way today. We’ll also practice (possible contingency scenarios) to prepare for all situations.

Coach on Jason Sanders’ offseason: He’s been great. He’s been consistent, and that’s probably the one thing about him that’s probably his best quality, his consistency. The way he works, trains, goes about his craft.

Honestly, it will be disappointing if we don’t show up this weekend and beat the Patriots. I think we’re the better team, but we need our HC to match up against Belichick. Last year, BB’s game plan (RPO) was better than ours, and we had no answer for it. We should be the ones dominating and they should be stuck without an answer.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Yeah, we pretty much knew what the game plan was going to be and made no efforts to stop it. Fitz throwing 3 picks didn’t help though. Was a close game mid-way through the 4th.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cheats ran their gameplan to perfection, got 3 picks, but we were still in the game late

Probably why Cam is out, would have taken a smoke and mirrors season to get them to the playoffs

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

steve — you ever dealt with pollsters? I used to in my old job. They are real egg heads. Getting the call right is all they worry about. Doesn’t mean they always do but they aren’t trying to slant cause of political view. That goes for the academic ones most of all.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My brother worked at one, he said the political poll numbers never matched up to what he was seeing

Last time in London, they had a program on political polls and how they use them to influence the vote, exactly what I saw in 2016

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What kind of polling place did your brother work for? Was it a pay for poll place? What did he do?

And what did you see in 2016? Almost all the final polls were within the margin of error. What they missed was the shifts in specific states, mainly what is now known as the Rust Belt swing.

Belichick is the master of shutting down the most dangerous player. In our offense, right now I’d say it would be Gesicki. I’d read an American study on Americans a few years back. It concluded that by the time most of us reach age 35, we revert to what we’d listened to when we were growing up (say, 6-15 years old). For whatever reason, we just don’t like ‘newer’ music.

In an effort to confirm this, I’ve personally asked many people (of all ages) what their favorite music is. And sure enough, the study was rather definitive in its conclusions. Obviously, there are always exceptions, although rare.

I find this to be most interesting, to be sure. And yes, it holds true for me (for the most part) as well.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I’m 58, 70’s and 80’s (Plus some 90’s Country) music for me. Listen to nothing new nowadays, except occasionally Country.

Yup! You fit the study well, Bookman. I’m not a Country music fan whatsoever, but I do actually think some 90s Country is alright. I really like some of Shania Twain’s music, where it got close to pop.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Faith Hill, as well. I LOVE her “The Way You Love Me”. Excellent use of the vocoder.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This makes it ever more difficult for me, as a producer/artist. Should I make tunes for me and my generation, or should I try to branch out and make tunes for the younger generation as well?

What’s more, am I really in tune with the younger generation in terms of making the music? So far so good on my part, but I can’t ‘feel it’ like I used to. I have to go out of my way to cater to this ‘new music’, which I really can’t ‘feel’.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We’ve all lived it. There are a whole bunch of kids from 19-35 making music. Only a few become so big that they keep going on after that, and they are mostly catering to the fans they had before. You think the butts in the seats at Brittny Spears concerts are those of young girls these days?

South Park did a couple episodes about this effect, lol

  52. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Stanger,

Polling is a lot different than it once was. Pew says only about 6% of their telephone calls are responded too. They, and everyone else mainly uses internet polling and it’s pretty obvious how skewed anything on the internet can be. While the 2016 polls may have been within their ‘margin of error’ to prevent too much introspection of all they got wrong(same for 2020), the truth is the expected outcome in the vast majority of places was a 91% chance of Hillary Clinton being president based off these polls. That expected outcome was WAY off.

The reason many people (including me) don’t trust polls is because many people don’t use them and they are getting the same ‘bubble effect’ most sites do that have a political slant. It’s hard to have an accurate measurement from the bubble for any opposing thoughts and it’s very hard in today’s political landscape to measure if you are getting accurate feedback or not. I think they aren’t.

With that said, you’re right. California is deep blue. I don’t see the recall succeeding but Californians are getting exactly what they are voting for, and re-voting for. I hate that for their sizable conservative population who have almost lost their voting rights at this point. As one prominent California Democrat(I think Newsome) has said, he doesn’t see a Republican ever winning in California ever again.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ballot harvesting makes that a reality, once put in Republicans lost 5 house seats in republican stronghold of Orange County

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

New Age — luv your smarts man. And on 2016 — I brought up the Rust Belt Shift. That’s what did it. And just to pat myself on the back saw that as a serious possible. Told folks don’t be so sure — this could happen in those exact states. Not that was sure of it but wasn’t buying into Hillary as blue wall locked when others were.

Also know about how hard polling is these days. Believe me the pollsters are trying to figure out how to create accuracy in the social media age, but it is not what was before. Nothing is pure internet poll at least. Must be better.

I’m 10 years out of it though so not exactly sure how they are doing it. But can tell you the places like Gallup and the academic pollsters are doing the best they can. So do I believe the 10% margin for Newsom as fact? Nope, not a bit. But 10% is big.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I don’t fault them. I think it’s an impossible task and they are trying their best. I just don’t think it’s accurate today and I don’t know of any way to get there. I think it’s a good way to poll opinions on initiatives, have a broad idea of American thoughts, and even influence them but that’s about all polling is useful for today Well, that and starting conversations. Almost nothing starts a good convo better than a poll people are split on.

Current poll shows 60% believe Tua will win 10 games but never become a captain. America, what are your thoughts?!

M – I did what you said, stopped at some point listening to new music, but then fell in love with Pop Rocks on Sirius XM radio, which is basically a lot of 90’s and 2000’s pop, rock and alternative music. It’s right in my wheelhouse right now and has been for a couple of years. I’m back in touch with what I missed so to speak.

Not fair to say the new music ain’t got the same soul, even if you’re just quoting a song. I love the energy my son’s friend’s brother’s band puts out. They’re solid musicians and put out good music. It’s a common lament but not really accurate

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think Steve was referring to MSM (MainStreamMusic), bud. The record industry doesn’t employ the same soul as years past.

And believe you me, there are LOTS of talented bands out there that the MSM won’t touch today. And I believe you that your son’s friend’s brother’s band is legit NICE!

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Still not fair. It’s kind of like us saying football now is a joke compared to what it was in the 80’s and 90’s, but people who watched in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s thought football in the 80’s and especially the 90’s was not the same game. Each generation wants to feel the things they had were better, it’s a normal progression in age I believe.

You are more pessimistic on him than you should be. Yes he’s gone on IR two years, but plays well when in there. And not like he’s gonna start over Fuller, Parker or Waddle. Probably gets less time than Wilson too. A great just in case option if Fuller or especially Parker goes down.

It’s so hard to bet against Bill Belichick. Even though I think we are the better team, Bill works football miracles. To win 7 games last year with Cam and all those players out was really impassive and I think he didn’t get enough credit for that due to Brady excelling.

I still think we pull it out. Flores is a good coach and I think we match up well everywhere but the run D and maybe OL.

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They didn’t give Gesicki a contract yet because they don’t have to. They can franchise him, and if he plays like I expect him to, we’ll probably have to because his contract will be huge. Then again, we have lots of cap money next season, maybe tops in the NFL.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Thanks for the lesson on that ORob. And yes that was meant to say not all agree with you, including other teams. Don’t see why that is a big deal but if it bothers you will not do similar in the future.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Just like the other day when you blasted me about confirming for the fest, i need not say that you do a good job, the question is whether i’ll be there or not, i don’t want to tell you something i’m unsure of,
so to make things perfectly clear, don’t expect to have to provide for me, i’m a big boy, i can find my way to Daves, pay for my dinner and get a ticket if i choose to do so,

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Fair enough. But I didn’t know you were going to go it alone. Was trying to make you part of the group experience. We have a group section, a tailgate and group food at D&B’s the night before.

so i don’t want to tell you i’ll be there and have to cancel.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Then do what you do. Gotta realize from my end the tickets and food for D&Bs and the tailgate are decided long before that weekend. If everyone was “maybe” whole thing couldn’t get done.

the thing is, it’s not a big deal to go down there for me, i can decide in an hour, it’s not like i’m going to hawaii, if i was; sure i’d have to make plans.
i’m very busy up here. It’s really a game time decision for me always.

when it gets that time i think about hanging with you guys and i want to go. but i’ll have to consider that then.

If they want to get a hometown discount they do, they draft a TE top 100, he struggles blocking and telegraphs our play to the D, they don’t try to negotiate a deal with him.

I just go by what i’ve seen, I’m sue most can agree that Tua didnt play that well last year, with three of the 9 games he played he threw for less than 100 yards, that alarmed me, so going over the video i tried to put my finger on why that was, whether it’s true remains to be seen.

as for Gesicki, he’s a frail guy, sure he’s a fantastic pass catcher, i totally agree with his rec skills, the thing is he can’t block due to being frail, he cant stand up to blocking a LBer.
    it telegraphs our intent.
if your in a fox hole you don’t want your partner yelling out.

I’m sure the F.O. realizes this.

I will enjoy the season, i’m just sick of losing!
i can’t stand to watch us get beat.
i’m a fan of the dolphins not any one player, and i think players that compromise winning IMO should be called out.
there are a lot of players i like, some mediocre and some that i dislike.

everyone thought Gase was god around here when we made the pal

  81. at Penn State, Mike Gesicki was called the mismatch, nobody could cover him

hes a tough cover in the NFL also

  82. Orob, seriously buddy, whats happening is you are stuck on a negative loop, rinse and repeat the negative doesnt change anything, and it sends out bad vibes
try some manifestation, put out good vibes and intent, support Gesicki, buy his jersey and root for him! say a prayer for him before games

all that good manifestation could translate into Gesicki having a lights out contract year

if you drafted a Te top 100, your current starter has issues blocking, he gives away your offensive intent when he’s on the field and he’s in a contract year with the season about to start,

it’s safe to assume that there will be no negotiations until seasons end if any at all.

so if you’re sold moving on without him would it be out of the realm to trade him prior at the deadline?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gesicki does not lineup in-line all the time. He goes in motion, lines up in the slot or chips the end and runs a route. Every team knows what he is just like lot of other pass cathcing TEs in the league. We have better blocking TEs when we want to lineup and run it or even then pass.

Trading Gesicki in-season makes no sense! For what?

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Not really. If he’s considered all that by your team, then he’s considered that by the other 31. Getting a 6th-7th rounder isn’t worth it. At this point in our rebuild, late picks just don’t move the needle. You might also want to hire a new OC who is able to use 3rd round TEs better than the guy being paid millions to be a bad OC.
