Dolphins win streak at 5, BYE Week is here . . .

If you were on the blog yesterday, you’ve probably read that one of our own here at FMU has been dealt a serious blow, Jon “Stanger” suffered a serious heart attack 2 weeks ago. The good news is he survived it and is now out of the ICU and heading in the right direction. If you know and have met Stanger, he’s one of the kindest, nicest people you can meet. It was very touch and go there for him, we’re all thankful he’s beginning to improve. Our best from FMU for a full and speedy recovery to a fine man. Godspeed in your recovery Jon!

I’ve said it here myself because you have to feel that the BYE week may end up actually hurting us this season despite the fact that this is the time of season where it can really help a playoff push by getting guys healthy. On the other hand momentum is real, and the 5 week winning streak is now over, without actually playing. It’s going to take a lot of focus by our team to stay on track when we face the NY Jets at home at Hard Rock Stadium 12/19. At 6-7, defeating the Jets would bring us to .500 and still relevant for the playoff push, astonishing considering our 1-7 start.

The defense has come alive and has really sparked this team. The offense has done enough to win games but the defense has been the key. Tua has run this short passing offense as well as it could be run, making quick decisions, and quick, accurate throws. All this completely out of necessity due to the O-line’s inability to pass block and run block. For the millionth time it’s not because Tua can’t throw further than 5 yards, and to give ORob a pass here, he’s far from the only one who says that, I hear it on NY sports shows, I see it on twitter all the time from Dolphins fans and it’s just become like a tag Tua has now, that he has a pop gun arm. Personally, I couldn’t give a rats ass as long as when our O-line improves, that he shows all these people he can throw the ball downfield, but until then, I’m fine with him doing what’s necessary.

About that defense, our 2nd first round draft pick of 2021, DE/LB Jaelan Phillips has really turned up the heat! Of course it’s not just Phillips, Emmanuel Ogbah is as steady as they come, always bringing strong pressure from the other side. Ogbah leads the team with QB hits with 19, followed by AVG with 18, and then Phillips with 16. Of course, the rookie Phillips now leads with 8.5 sacks, followed by Ogbah with 6. Ogbah, Wilkins and Phillips are tied with 7 TFL. Xavien Howard has 4 INT’s, 2 FF’s, 2 FR’s, and 14 passes defensed, easily the leader on this team. Rookie Jevon Holland has also been a huge spark, rushing the QB, making tackles, snaring INT’s. He’s basically everywhere, especially since S Brandon Jones has missed some time.

Things are looking up people, the Dolphins are looking legit and our good friend Jon (Stanger) is healing and on the mend. Now Sonny can take us into the BYE week with the BYE Week Bi-Babe.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

This is why I don’t get caught up hoping this team loses or that team loses; a lot of teams we needed to lose lost, and our odds are worse than last week. There are just too many teams tied or slightly ahead of us.

our chances to make the post season is to squeak into the #7 spot, Indy has a decently tough sched, cleve has a very tough sched, they play cincy as well so one of them will have to drop that game. cincy has a brutal sched left! denver raiders and pitt also.

Not necessarily. Head to head only counts first in a 2 way tie
    —————————-

Ken, in a three way tie, division tie breaker is applied first.

As Steve and i have been saying for the last week, if the Bills end up 10-7, we’re pretty much screwed.

    https://www.nfl.com/standings/tie-breaking-procedures

“Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.”

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

If we end up 10-7 we will have a 4-2 division record so we would be in pretty good shape

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

You’re killing me, Ken. Read what I quoted. If we’re tied with the Bills and any other team for that 7th spot, we’re eliminated, period, end of story.

The first tie breaker for 3 or more teams is to eliminate teams using divisional tie breakers, not divisional record. What that means is all teams in one division except the top team are eliminated. So the Bills would knock us out because they swept us.

If the Bills end up with a 10-7 record then, literally the only way we make the playoffs is if both the 2nd WC and the 3rd WC get in with a 10-7 record and then hopefully the Bills end up with the 2nd WC. Then, MAYBE we get the #7.

  13. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  14. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

there are 7 spots available with 4 games left, 3 of those spots are wild card, with the chargers at 8-5 they look to be in, if the Bills finish 10-7 they look to be in, that leaves one spot left with a slew of 7-6 teams.
    with 4 games left
you have Indy, Cleve, Cincy, & Den all at 7-6, then you have pitt at 6-6-1, the raiders at 6-7, and you have us at 6-7
Indy has a tough sched, they also play the raiders, one will eliminate the other, we lose head to head with indy.
Cleve has to play 3 afc teams in the hunt, they will eliminate each other.
DEn has a tough road to hoe, they also play multiple teams in the hunt

all these teams will eliminate each other so it doesn’t mean that we cant make the playoffs if buffalo does. all we have to do is take care of business.

the beauty of all this is, we don’t play any of the teams in the hunt for the WC, we play the division leaders or the teams out of contention.
the pats may not even need a victory in the last game, their seeding may already be established.

    we need Indy to lose.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s still possible for us to make the playoffs If Buffalo gets to 10-7, it just deals us a huge blow. In that scenario we only make the playoffs if the following happen:

Both the #6 and #7 WC spots have a 10-7 record or worse
The Bills have the tie breakers to get the #6 spot
Dolphins have the tie breakers to get the #7 spot

If the Bills don’t have the tie breakers to get #6 (definitely not guaranteed based on conference record), then the Bills literally knock us out in tie breakers on both the #6 and the #7 spots.

The Bills ending with 10-7 really hurts our chances to make the playoffs badly. There is no other logical way to look at it.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If Indy only loses one more game, they have the tiebreaker on Buff, if Cincy only loses one more game, they have the tie breaker on Buff.

So now, you can add to ‘things that have to happen if Buff gets to 10-7’ that neither Cincy, nor Indy can be at 10-7 or they beat Buff for the #6 spot, and Buff knocks us out for #7. The odds just keep diminishing.

Do the math and it’s obvious we have a much better shot if Buffalo doesn’t end up at flippin 10-7 because then there are more scenarios where we get in.

At this point we basically need Buff to win out or lose to NE and a game at home they really shouldn’t lose.

  15. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  16. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This is a breakdown of what we need:

Raiders and Steelers both lose 1 more game. We jump both of them on overall record.
Denver and Cleveland lose one more game, we beat them both on conference record.

All that is almost certain to happen. Now it gets tricky. That leaves 6 teams, including us fighting for 4 spots (AFCN winner and 3 WCs).

We need two or three of these next five teams to fall our way (it’s three if two of the teams are Cincy and Balt):

Indy, Buffalo, Cincy, Balt to lose twice
    Chargers to lose three times

We can assume the Chargers won’t lose 3 of their last 4, so we’re really talking about the last two spots.

If I’m being honest, now that I’m mapping it out, I can see Buffalo at 10-7 is not as critical as I thought because we lose a tiebreaker on conference record to either Indy or Cincy anyway.

So whether Buffalo ends up 10-7 or not, the hardest part of us getting in is the same, and if they somehow lose twice it makes it easier.

What we basically need is (two loses for Indy or Buff) and (two losses for Cincy or Baltimore).

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, the easiest way to break it down is we need two losses for Indy, and two losses for either Cincy or Balt. Everything else should happen naturally.

  17. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The bengals play the Browns, Chiefs, Ravens and Broncos
The ravens play the bengals, Steelers, Rams and Packers

I would honestly be surprised if one of them doesn’t lose 2 games

    The other pair is tougher
Colts play Patriots, Jags, Cards, Raiders
Bills have Panthers, Patriots, Falcons and Jests

So to me both of those last pair are tougher bc 2/4 of their remaining games should be wins

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I see it the same way.

Probably our best shot on the 2nd pair is the Colts losing to the Pets and the Cards.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And like I mention below, if Indy beats the Pets, then we are the biggest Bills fans in the world the following week.

  18. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Sure, I’ll keep going.

So we root for the Patriots this weekend against the Colts…except…If the Pets lose to the Colts, then it opens up other possibilities.

A Pets loss means that if the Bills get payback and beat the Pets the following week, then we can still end up ahead of the Pets by beating them in the season finale. If all that happens, then we only need either Cincy or Baltimore to lose twice and we’re in.

  19. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ok, here’s what I believe to be the definitive list of what we need in the last 4 weeks of the season.

I am assuming the Chiefs and Titans win their divisions and the Chargers are WC1

Raiders/ Steelers both lose 1 game. We jump both on overall record.
Denver/ Cleveland both lose 1 game. We have tiebreakers on conference record.

Balt/ Cincy one loses 2 games. We jump Cincy on record, or Balt on H2H/ conference record.
Indy/ Buff/ NE one loses 2 games*. We jump Indy/ Buff on record, or NE on H2H.

*NE loses 2 games before playing us week 18.

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Winning 9 in a row is a tall order. The fact that we won 5 in a row and are playing much better football has been fun. But that 1-7 start really was a kick in the balls.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t think we’ll pull it off which will make all the above moot, but I’m damned sure going to enjoy the playoff hope we have right now, lol.

But one game at a time, and there is no reason we should lose to the Jest this weekend even without any RBs.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hear ya and what’s up with basically the entire RB room testing positive for COVID?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Gotta wonder if it was the bye week, and if someone in the RB room picked it up during their week off then gave it to the rest of the room. Let’s just hope it doesn’t spread to anyone else.

I guess if it had to happen, Jest week is as good a week as any lol.

  21. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Our rooting guide for week 15 (some are debatable):

    Panthers over Bills
    Titans over Steelers
    Browns over Raiders*
    Broncos over Cincy
    Packers over Ravens
    Indy over the Pets**

*Pick ’em game. They both have losses down the road. I expect the Browns to lose next week in GB, so I picked them.

** Basically a pick ’em game depending on if you think Indy has a better chance to lose in Arizona or the Pets to lose to Buffalo.

    17. Miami Dolphins (6-7)
    Previous ranking: 21

Player who must step up: OL Liam Eichenberg

Eichenberg was one of the most highly touted offensive linemen in the 2021 rookie class, and while he has gained quite a bit of experience starting for the Dolphins this season, he has been the team’s worst starter statistically. Since Week 9, the beginning of Miami’s win streak, Eichenberg owns a 71.4% pass block win rate — which ranks 162nd out of 164 qualified linemen. His season-long win rate of 76% ranks dead last among 170 qualified players. He is better than he has played and is not in danger of losing his starting job, but a strong finish would be inspiring before the Dolphins enter an offseason loaded with cash and desperate for improvement. — Marcel Louis-Jacques

I get that this virus was really bad, but how I see people going about their lives, I don’t see much concern from the public.

The NFL and sports overall have a problem because it will effect the standings. You can’t deplete rosters and take out some important players and have a legitimate result in your game.

Wondering how old the bartender was, and why s/he would say such a thing with so much seeming malice. S/he was probably thinking, ‘Okay, Boomer!’.

My best guess is that s/he is a (wannabe?) social media whore, probably around mid-20s.

JUST RETURNED from the company holiday bash held at a Brazilian Steakhouse in downtown Tampa. It had some similarities with a Lightning home game. The Bolts, playing about 4-5 miles away, played before the usual packed house and won 3-2 in OT. The steak house was also totally sold out (not a single empty seat was seen). And the patrons also won, even tho’ some of them obviously ate and drank well into overtime. One of our new employees passed out, NOT from one of my bad jokes nor from over drinking. She has, as we later found out, a case of narcolepsy, which causes one to pass out without warning. NOT a disorder I have ever observed before, so I had to admit I was stumped when it happened. But my dear friend Ryan, who is now the senior pharmacist at a new Publix, correctly diagnosed this situation. Mega props to him. Ryan got to know Young Stanger fairly well when I was taking him to Dolphins games way back when he was a student at USF’s school of pharmacy. Ryan also “hangs out” occasionally at my workplace as he is now married to our office manager. Good guy with an eye for investment quality coins and the means to pay for them.

Got home just after 10:00 PM to help my wife into bed. She’s slightly injured from a fall in the lady’s room and was on the IR yesterday, today, and probably tomorrow. I stayed pretty sober since I was MC for the festivities AND I had to drive home about 25 miles from the steak house. Walked BOTH of our dogs and now hitting the sack.

CAN’T WAIT FOR Mr. Young Stanger’s first post since his surgery!!

I’ve already been proven correct about a boatload, but I’m not going to brag about it. Common sense (which is not so common!) has been lost. REAL SCIENCE has been lost. Simple MATHEMATICS has been lost. Accurate HISTORY has been lost and/or rewritten in short order (we see this happen with dictatorial governments throughout history, IE: history is written by the victors).

Stand for something or you’ll fall for everything. When has the federal government NOT fucked something up? Red flags should be going up EVERYWHERE… and I’m talking, WORLDWIDE.

Just keep believing that everything accidentally/arbitrarily happens for some kind of weird reason, keeping these fucks in power.

And today, the debt limit ceiling (+2.5T) got passed (50-49) in the Senate. They won’t pay for it… YOU AND I will pay for it… along with our great-great-grandchildren.

It also doesn’t take an insider to know that big Pharma is a pretty good investment. I have invested in pharmaceuticals which I did because America has an increasingly older population facing many chronic illnesses.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Ken

No question science and medicine has led to some very good results. But we do have a problem with medicine in this country, which is a r]direct result of the industry aka big pharmacy – it’s too expensive. It’s 250% more than the average of most countries – and that’s bc most countries’s governments aggressively negotiate those prices before they hit the market.

This is a very fixable problem.

What kills me is that the same people slamming big pharmacy are standing in the way of doing anything about it. The ability for Medicare to negotiate prices was part of the original spending bill proposed by some of the more “left” democrats – no republicans supported it, a few moderate democrats also refused to support it, and they had to drop it.

You can track how much was spent by pharmaceutical lobbyists to have it removed from the bill

        https://time.com/6110801/prescription-drug-prices-spending-bill-big-pharma/

But rather than address the problem directly – people would rather talk about it in a nebulous cloud of conspiracies and generalizations: ‘We don’t want government in medicine”

Piggy/Ken – I don’t consider regulating pharma to be government in medicine. regulating industry to keep the playing field level is a legit government function. I do object to socialized medicine where the government runs the medical system, a la the UK or Canada. The government is lousy at running a business (Post Office anyone?). As for the proposed Bill to allow the government to negotiate drug prices, I haven’t read the specifics or seen what was attached to it so I have no comment other than there are few bills that are as simple as the media likes to make them out to be. And pretty much every representative is in the pocket of one industry or the other. And finally, fuck all socialists/communists and the horses they stole to ride in on. The only good ones are the ones stripped of citizenship and permanently exiled or the dead ones.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I favor some of privatized medicine because I believe that favors and or encourages innovation. I do agree with Piggy that there is abuse in the industry. That said my larger point is that big Pharma is not the bogeyman that many make it out to be. Big Pharma produces tangible results that helps millions of people every day. I don’t see Big Pharma as evidence of an international cabal trying to control our lives. Rather it is a large business trying to maximize its profits as all business would and should do. Many times they step over the line as do many other businesses

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’ve heard plenty of conservative equate govt regulation to socialism. I’m glad you don’t feel that way but different people fall different places on that scale. I don’t think people are shy about throwing the “ism” words around recklessly.

In this case the proposal was to allow Medicare to negotiate those prices directly which is closer to the govt running the business in contrast to run of the mill regulation. That ability gives Medicare more power and that runs contrary to some efforts to get rid of the aca or oppose m4a, so it’s no surprise to see political lines drawn on the bill

it’s kind of tuning the dial up to 11 on regulation of pharmaceuticals

The democrats old plan (it’s no longer alive) follows an effort by trump to do the same by an executive order he signed in sept 2020. It didn’t work to lower prices but you can see trump and democrats like Sanders were actually on the same page and there is no question the need is there. The difference between what trump did and the democrat’s dead proposal, is that the EO did not give Medicare that power, it used a 3rd party – and of course one is an EO and the other is legislation

I don’t think trump or the people that supported the recent efforts were in the pocket of ‘big pharmacy”. They might do it for political clout – but that’s the way democracy is supposed to work IMO. The people that opposed it, the handful of democrats, all the republicans in congress – they probably took money from lobbyists. We know lobbyists were throwing money at them.

Some are standing on principal that it’s too much of a power grab for Medicare but it’s really something to see politicians who applauded trumps EO, oppose the democrats bill. That’s pretty much what I am referring to when I say the same people slamming big pharmacy

I don’t think it’s possible to lower prescription drug prices unless the govt is the one doing the negotiation, and that opinion is going to run contrary to a lot of political philosophies. So I expect some disagreements on that. But More importantly there’s no reason to gravitate to the belief in organized conspiracies when we know people just have ideological differences on where govt should start and where it should end or where it goes to far or doesn’t go far enough

    Piggy,

I’m a big fan of some of the single payer initiatives popular in Europe. I’m against them here but only because of how our country is truly run. Medicare shouldn’t have that power.

Congress has reneged on their responsibility for decades and allowed free reign by government agencies who hold zero accountability. Mark Meadows is just the latest example of government employees thumbing their noses at Congress and Holder was another earlier example. We give enough power to unnamed bureaucrats already. No need to give more but rather time to start allowing less.

When we get that fixed, I’m all aboard

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They do. Inefficient bureaucracy goes hand in hand with the existence of government IMO so does corruption, but I think corruption you can punish whereas bureaucracy you just have to accept. that said – I don’t think those concerns should stop legislation.

I have a standing objection to any arguments about the government not working well in the face of the private sector also sucking

It’s an argument that keeps us from pragmatic legislation that we need and many people across political spectrums agree on

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m all for legislation and Congress doing their job. I’m not for them handing it off to Medicare. outside of in small chunks. Show me someone in the bureaucracy being punished and I might agree.
