2022 Miami Dolphins Roster – What needs to be done

Chris Grier is clearly the Top Dog, The Big Man, Numero Uno Honcho, The Head Cheese. This is his ballgame, at least for this season. He’ll be responsible for our draft, and for choosing wisely in the 2022 Free Agency period before and after the draft. Whomever is hired as Head Coach will have the understanding that Chris Grier, at least for the moment is the man with the power and the final say on personnel decision making. He will accommodate his new Head Coach, but he will not be overrun by him. The Dolphins should be able to fill some huge holes in Free Agency, otherwise known as “Overpaying Contracts”. It doesn’t matter, we have to spend money, and we will. If we overpay, so be it, it’s expected. Besides having a few key positions of need, we have our own free agents that need to be taken care of. Let’s put it this way, we don’t need to save for the future, we need to get this team right now. Fix the biggest issue, which is the O-line and then work at giving Tua some upgraded weapons at RB and WR, not necessarily through Free Agency, but both Free Agency and the NFL Draft. Our first pick will likely be one of the last 3 picks in RD 1, and Grier needs to hit on that one. He no longer has an arsenal of multiple first, second and third round picks, and for a change we’re making our first selection at the end of the 1st round, but unfortunately not because we won a playoff game.

To address re-signing our own guys, the most obvious target is DE Emmanuel Ogbah. His market value is slated at $10M per year but I’m thinking more like $12-14M. Either way, he’s priority number one. Mike Gesicki will be a curious situation to keep an eye on. We know Gesicki is a talented receiving TE, and we also know Chris Grier selected him in RD 2, pick #42 in 2018. He’s had a nice career as a Miami Dolphins TE, not as good as I expected though. I still feel like he was underused here. I’d have thought he’d be the most dynamic receiving TE in a Dolphins uniform but that still belongs to former TE Randy McMichael. Randy Mac finished his first 4 seasons with 221 receptions, 2456 yards and 15 TD’s. Slightly behind is Gesicki with 199 receptions for 2255 yards and 13 TD’s. I truly thought Gesicki’s totals should have been higher. Twice in McMichael’s first 4 he was targeted over 100 times, Gesicki finally did that last season, but the caveat there is it was a 17 game season. Like I said, underused. My next guy is Nik Needham. I love this kid, and I hope we consider him an important part of our team. The 25 year old defensive back has played anywhere and everywhere and has played well. He’s averaged 50-60 tackles per season and has 6 INT’s in 3 seasons. He also has 23 passes defensed. He’s a team player and an unselfish one. The next player I want to re-sign but more for depth is LB Elandon Roberts. He’s a strong 2 down run stopper as we have seen for the last couple of years. TE Durham Smythe is another player we should re-sign, and I believe it’s possible Smythe is signed before Gesicki and possibly instead of Gesicki if Gesicki’s price is too steep. We MUST also re-sign ST’s ace and WR Mack Hollins. He’s a high priority re-sign as well.

OK, now on to the rest of the NFL’s potential castoffs. We need a huge upgrade or 2 on our O-line. We can address one or both in FA, and I can almost guarantee you that we will be spending a good amount on at least one of the top tier offensive linemen. To quickly reiterate, I’m not convinced we’re going to be looking for a tackle, although the argument for one can easily be made. My belief is still that Austin Jackson can be our LT and Liam Eichenberg can be our RT. That would indicate we’d be looking for interior OL, either 2 guards or a guard and a center. I think the latter is more likely. Brandon Scherff and Andrew Norwell are the top OG’s, but the guy I had mentioned weeks ago and still prefer is 49ers LG Laken Tomlinson. He plays every game every season and would solidify the left side and help young Austin Jackson at LT. I like Robert Hunt at RG so I’d prefer we look for an OC. The pickings are slim unless we’re looking for a C over 30. The Detroit Lions lost their star OC Frank Ragnow early on and turned to former NYG and former Dolphin C Evan Brown. Brown had a great season starting 12 games for the Lions. He’s a FA and just 25 years old. Ted Karras is another option. He played OG last season for the rival Patriots but as we all know, he played C for us here in 2020 and played well enough. Who knows if Karras would be willing to come back. If wellok at OT, Terron Armstead would be tops, both in talent and $$$. Cam Robinson from the Jaguars would be a younger and less expensive option. I hope we don’t look for an OT as I’ve mentioned.

Besides the O-line, we need to upgrade our WR corps. I don’t want top tier, address the best in the draft, but a nice 2nd tier WR is possible. We’re not a Davante Adams away from the SB so spend wisely here. Christian Kirk from the Cardinals is a nice talent. Others here have fallen for Byron Pringle of the Chiefs. I worry a bit about those 3rd, 4th and 5th option guys. Plays break down in KC and Mahomes is flushed and the defense naturally rolls to Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce so of course guy like Pringle will either be in single or coverage or even possibly uncovered. We kind of saw the same thing with Sammy Watkins when he was with the Chiefs. Now Kirk played mostly in the slot, but he’s young and talented. D.J. Chark is a guy who has feasted on the perimeter and is a big bodied, agile player. 6’4 200, coming off a fractured ankle injury which should affect his playing career. He’s a 4.34 40 guy with a tremendous 40″ vertical. I’d say Chark would be number one target at WR, he’s been productive in a less than ideal offensive situation in Jacksonville. There’s also JuJu Smith-Schuster who had tremendous early success in his career at Pittsburgh, but has since been pushed back into the shadows by receivers like Chase Claypool and Dionte Johnson. Could a change of scenery jump-start JuJu? JuJu is a tough, fight for the ball type of receiver with less than ideal speed but good athleticism and ability.th Chark and Juju are only 25.

I’m going to cover the 2022 NFL Draft and in particular our needs in a future article. For now I’m going to leave you with my Free Agency wants, since there is Free Agency before the draft, and then of course, after the draft where a whole host of players are released and then become available once teams shuffle their rosters post draft. We’re one of the top 5 in cap space available so if we choose not to take my advice and go out and spend top money, we have it at approximately $67.5M. Let’s hope our guy Chris Grier gets the first part of the equation right so we go into the draft with better flexibility to make this team better.

If the issue with Calvin Ridley is he has an issue with the Atlanta organization, would you trade for him? He’s from Florida, played a little with Tua at Alabama and he’s now an established top NFL WR.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sun Sentinel’s Dave Hyde blasts the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching search
“It is obvious now: The Miami Dolphins don’t want a head coach. They want an offensive coordinator to call a head coach.”

He’s means McDaniel or Moore. Leave it to the local guys to shit on anything they can. Zac Taylor didn’t have an over abundance of NFL coaching experience as a QBs coach and defacto OC in Miami and he’s now coaching in the AFC Championship game.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Zac Taylor was able to pick his own coaching staff and his own QB. We haven’t seen that’s the case in Miami. Other than the statement being slightly sensational, it’s not far off.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not so sure about the whole wanting to keep the defensive staff thing. All of that info. that I have seen is from fan sites, not from major news outlets.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Joe Burrow fell to them by having to the #1 pick. Zac didn’t get to pick his own QB. It was obvious to everyone. It was good timing. He had no idea who would be available for him. It’s not just Burrow either. They have some good defensive players, then Mixon, Boyd, Higgins and now Chase. It’s always about talent but I’m just saying that Zac Taylor was an out of the box thinking hire. So far so good.

How about McDaniel, then bring in Cordarrelle, to be his Debo type.

M13, how you doing with the COVID my friend?

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Me thinks if Brady retires, Rodgers ends up in Tampa.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Think about it like this, you add a Tee Higgins and a Joe Mixon type talent along with Tua and Waddle and everything changes. Our defense is ready to compete, the offense is not.

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This is one of the mid round DT’s I was looking at who is really impressing at the Shrine Bowl. Hope he does not climb draft boards to much. He would be a good addition.

“1. Matthew Butler IDL , Tennessee

Butler is a player that I was fairly unfamiliar with as he is in my colleague Joe Marino’s scouting region, but Butler didn’t take long to grab my attention. At nearly 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds with very long arms, Butler jumps out with his size and his movement skills. He flashed quickness and disruptive burst in one-on-ones where he consistently won his rep in pass-rush situations.

What impressed me most was his ability to win in the team period against the run. He was able to set the point of attack, shed the blocker, and locate the football. His combination of inside pass-rush ability and run-stopping power will have him quickly rising up the boards in a fairly weak interior defensive line class.”

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Whoever we hire as HC, we must re-sign Ogbah. Along with Wilkins, Davis, Sieler and Butler, that is a good group on the DL. Then you have the LBs – Baker, Van Ginkel and Phillips. The DBs – X, By. Jones, Holland and Br. Jones. That’s a good core. I like Needham a lot, but he’s a UFA as are many other depth players. But the core is there. Do what you can with depth in FA and add some defense in the draft. We don’t need a big time defensive player in FA. Ogbah should be it.

Load up on offense. Why waste time with the cap we have? I’d target Penny and Gordon, Ridley, Robinson or a Kirk and Pringle type. We all agree we should add at least two vet OL.

Let the draft come to us. We’re drafting 29-32 in the 1st and go from there. Hit on one special player and a few role and/or developmental players.

This team could become really good overnight with the right additions. It’s not that far off.

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    A couple of trady downs

    30. Kenneth Walker RB Michigan State
    63. Brandon Smith LB Penn State
    95. Daniel Faalele OT Minnesota
    106. Matthew Butler DT Tennessee
    112. Thayer Munford OG Ohio State
    122. James Cook RB Georgia
    152. Christian Watson WR North Dakota State
    157. Markquese Bell S Florida A&M
    179. Jerreth Sterns WR Western Kentucky
    194. Micah McFadden ILB Indiana
    201. Dawson Deaton OC Texas Tech
    223. Zach VanValkenburg EDGE Iowa

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I didn’t wait too long to take a WR. Christian Watson is an underrated small school kid but is 6’5 208 and projected 40 time is 4.38! Sterns is not fast but is a small crafty guy and reminds me of a smaller Landry or Bess type receiver.

AGAIN, Watson is 6’5 208 with 4.38 speed and great run after the catch ability.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

BBM, we have 8 picks. LOL

Kenneth Walker is a little too leggy for me. I wouldn’t draft him in the 1st and maybe not the 2nd either. I’m in on the Penny or Gordon idea in FA but not long term as we retool our backfield.

Look at the Rams. They wasted no time saying we want to win now. They went to a SB and could again this year in not much time. The long plan doesn’t work. Too much can happen. When you have a core go for it!

  11. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

BBMike, we can’t build forever. Tua will be in his 3rd season. It’s go time and the team has the resources to make that happen.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I am right with you. All my mocks, I am keeping in mind resigning Ogbah, fix OL, add a WR and a RB in FA.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Don’t see any LB’s to sign in FA other than Kwon Alexander or our own who won’t break the bank.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We can always draft a player to eventually replace the FA guy. But it’s time to start winning now. 10-6 and 9-8 under Flores the last 2 years was solid. Take the next step! If it doesn’t happen Grier is gone. What are we waiting for?

If I’m Grier with the new HC the goal should be championship. Not well… we’re still putting this thing together. 3 years is enough. It’s time to make the playoffs and take the next step.

Developmental time is over. Win more games.

If we let Ogbah walk I might lose it altogether. What is our focus if that happens?

Yikes!!! Life as a Phins fan. LOL

Man, it likes to stick around, this omicron variant. Went back to work today for the first time since getting it, but all went well. My strength is back, though I continue to have some chest congestion and some mild head symptoms. It was like a regular cold/flu, but it lingers more than usual.

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Who y’all want to see in the SB?

I am thinking Bengals/Rams. Not Rams because of our draft pick status. lol I want Rams so we can get on with this coaching search and get on with things. I think, whoever our HC is, will determine what type OL we should be targeting. I know McDaniel is more a Zone blocking guy mixed with some power stuff. Not sure about Kellen Moore’s system in Dallas.

  20. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Really hate that we didn’t get Daboll. A lot of a HC’s success comes from who he brings with him and Daboll seems to have more experience and connections than the other two. Not a fan of Moore at all. Should be some good games today. Supposedly Miami was trying to get Burrow for 3 1sts. Who knows but it makes sense. The guy is a stud.

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Was trying to figure out what system Kellen Moore runs and came across this article. It’s interesting. Though, it seems he has a thick paybook where everyone needs to be on the same page for it to work.

Definitely have to fix OL for any scheme to work.

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tuohy says TB was the most watched team in 2020, then magically they win the SB

Around the 19 minute mark they talk about the Rams going to SB in their own stadium, I said that was going to happen, before the season, after I saw the schedule

In the 22nd minute they talk about Vegas putting a call in, but said this probably doesn’t happen, but what if Vegas gets info from the NFL before the spread goes out on what teams they’re favoring this week

We’ve all talked about the Cheats getting calls, was that setup by the league? Hard to debate it wasn’t

In 28th minute they discuss holding, and why it’s called sometimes, instead of other times

    Cincinnati isn’t winning today

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cav doesn’t watch the NBA any longer, because of the bad calls in their series against the Lakers in the conf finals, Tuohy talks about it

A point Tuohy brings up is, there’s corruption in everything, yet somehow people think the NFL is immune to it

        How exactly is that possible?

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m rooting against Cincy for all the wrong reasons. I don’t want to hear all the Burrow talk. I almost want him to have a terrible day so people just STFU about him.

    New Age,
There were report the day before the draft that Miami was offering all of their firsts for the number one pick- it’s just resurfacing now because Burrow is and the AFC Championship game. I’m sure they didn’t give much thought.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Probably not and I remember when those rumors first hit. I’m pulling for the Rams and Bengals today. Mahomes needs a year off and I like the Rams better of those two. That’s about it, I’m not too interested in any of it today.

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I remember thinking that Burrow just had that one great year in college and I was afraid he was just a flash in the pan. I liked the Tua pick then, I still think he’s going to be a very good QB. The situation you fall into is as important as how good you are. Despite landing in a poor situation, Tua has still played well. I don’t think Burrow would have done better if he was here.

  27. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I was also afraid Burrow was a one year wonder as well

But so far he’s been very good

His style of play though, opens the door for big mistakes
I love his style but, he is holding the ball a long time and trying to make a big play

He does a great job of getting those big plays though

    But it’s really risky

I kind of think the chiefs are going to blow the bengals out today

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I did 50,000 mock drafts that year, give or take (LOL), trying to trade up for Burrow. I remember being able to do it trading our first two 2020 1st round picks and a 2021 1st round pick most of the time.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Could he have thrown a pass 20 yards downfield to get into fg range?

Could he have thrown the pass to Hill, that was about 25 yards downfield, that he took to the house?

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Why do you think he’s a cancer?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

As the 49ers. Hell ask Ross who he basically jilted at the altar and now is apparently ready to take him back no matter who he sullied himself with. He apparently is ready to ditch his dream job at his alma matter. Watch some of his unhinged rants that he is famous for. I can’t stand Harbaugh. The guy is classless

  55. D's avatar D says:

I don’t think vet upgrades at WR are smart. We should draft to fill our WR room. RB the same, probably the same for TE though that’s about 50/50 for me. I’d rather us go for OL in FA, maybe draft a backup with potential to take a spot once they acclimate. WR there are always plenty in the draft we just need to have an offensive identity so we can start drafting the right types. RB is the same, no vets, just draft a guy who fits the team need for the role he will play.

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I agree .. #1 priority is FA Vet OL , ideally X2.. I then believe our current RBs would be more than adequate , by current I include Duke

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree on RB and WR too. I do think we need a veteran WR, not a stud, just a reliable receiver who suits up every week. I’d draft a WR with our first and maybe a RB with our 2nd

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’d like to go OL as well, but there are a lot of other teams that will be going for OL upgrades in FA. We can’t put all our eggs in that basket. I’d go for OL, then resign Duke, Ogbah, Gesicki and make a run at Godwin

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Yes , I consider those resigns as musts in any scenario, and agree OL is a league wide need

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    The Bengals are in trouble.

  57. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – I have one thing to say to you . . .

    Baalke with Harbaugh (36-11-1)
    Baalke w/o Harbaugh (18-47)

Maybe it has nothing to do with class and Harbaugh had a legit beef with Baalke.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He repeats the same behavior every where he goes

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        You mean winning??? 😆

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s who he is. He’s a dick but a very good coach.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He has no issues with Michigan

        He’s just moving on

I don’t think he had issues with Stanford either

Besides, even the best coaches and gms don’t match with everyone

I don’t really understand where you are coming from on this Ken

Harbaugh would be a dream hire

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He wins games but not titles and ditches his job when it becomes clear that he can’t deliver the big one

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I recently read something where the guy was saying how Trent Baalke is still the GM in JAX is mind boggling. Supposedly he’s a dick too and not that good as a personnel guy.

  58. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Nice blocking downfield by Chase

  59. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Ken

His record in SF, Michigan and Stanford is taking teams/programs that aren’t competitive and making them competitive

the fact that he hasn’t won a championship makes him hungry

    Thats exactly what we need

  60. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Cowboys OC Moore has zero appeal to me .. I think the cowboys fan at work would thank me if hired him

  61. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Piggy Michigan was not all that happy with him. He choked in big games. This year was the first time they beat OSU

  62. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Like I’ve said many times, whoever our next HC is, all I want is for him to be successful. 🙂

  63. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I don’t care about the personality of our coach anymore. I’m sick and tired of being mediocre or worse. Balke and Harbaugh didn’t get along. My brothers and Father are huge Niners fans, and would always talk about how big of an asshole Balke was. If we can get Harbaugh, I’m all in. He’s a winning coach everywhere he goes.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

His record at Michigan is a mirage. College football is all about recruiting. In games when it mattered he was disappointing

  64. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    Shula was a dick too

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SF went to shit BECAUSE he left. Not because he left the team in bad shape. That’s just not true. He’s a great coach, he just is, and he’s head and shoulders better than anyone else we have available to us. Flores seemed like a dick for all intent and purpose but you didn’t have a problem with him. I want to win, and if Harbaugh makes that happen, and I believe he will, I can tolerate his abrasive personality

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They actually fired His replacement after 1 year
Then Chip Kelly took them either farther down a hole

And it wasn’t until Kyle shanahan came there that they began being competitive again

So yeah – they went to shot bc they parted ways with him, they actually accelerated their demise with the decisions they made to replace him

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Trent Balke deserve the blame for that. He almost ruined that organization.

  66. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Hulk too woke for Harbaugh. Harbaugh mean, says things that trigger players. Need safe space.

  67. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

So Ken, you’d want Kellen Moore and Mclovin over Harbaigh?!!!!

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    LMAO @ McLuvin!

  69. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Heck – Harbaugh won with that anti-American, communist fuck Kaepernick!

  70. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I actually love McLuvin too

  71. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Harbaugh has a big Rolodex .. that’s a plus to hiring him over the other two , unless no one in his Rolodex returns his calls 🤷‍♂️

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No NFL HC has ever won a Super Bowl with 2 teams. So Harbaugh not winning it with SF avoids that crazy stat. 😉

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That was a heck of a play by the QB

  74. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Isaiah Prince starts for the bengals

  75. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I am not a big fan of Harbaugh. However, he was 61-24 at Michigan and name me one superstar on offense he did that with??? I can guarantee it, if you name one, it won’t be a QB. Have to say it was coaching.

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Well it’s a game.

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, why the no love for Justyn Ross? Injuries! Also, his production has been on the downslide since he was a freshman. His numbers last season were hardly noteworthy.

  78. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Ken – Harbaugh may be a little unhinged, but that is what Miami needs. For the last 20+ years they have been the the most passionless team I’ve ever seen.

  79. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’d be thrilled if we hire Harbaugh. It’s been so long since we’ve had a real measure of success, I just want a team that consistently makes the damn playoffs for a few years. Harbaugh is a proven commodity in that regard.

During this process, I never considered it a real possibility we get him, but honestly with all the names bandied about on this board, Harbaugh would have been my 2nd choice behind only Payton.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That was huge for the Bengals.

  81. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Burrow and Chase have the chance to be special

  82. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    Nice

  83. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Cincy’s OL is shit. It’s impressive what they are doing.

  84. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Fook…gotta go catch my next flight.

  85. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

So much for my KC blowout prediction

  86. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I hear that 6 minutes is enough time for KC

    Can anyone confirm?

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No need to cover Kelce on 3rd down

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They were doing the amoeba defense like we did all the time and putting everyone on the line

I don’t like it at all in that situation – but we did stuff like that all the time

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Right down to the wire.

  89. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think that sack hurts KC

  90. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    Wow

  91. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    That was utterly ridiculous though

  92. Ken's avatar Ken says:

After that Chiefs don’t deserve to win

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Wow!!!

  94. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Too cutesy with the clock by the chiefs there

More interested in taking it down than scoring

  95. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Are people wondering why Bienemy isn’t getting job offers now?

  96. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:
