Dolphins franchise again embroiled in negative controversy

Once again my fellow Dolphins fans, we have to endure another period of time where our team is in the news for all the wrong reasons. This was supposed to be the weeks of excitement about finding the right Head Coach to lead our team to success for the next decade or so. Instead, we’re left with accusations against our owner, GM and team which could hurt our chances of securing the right candidate for our Head Coach vacancy. In 2013 we had the “Bullygate Scandal” while Joe Philbin was our Head Coach. Now in 2022, we have the “Tank Scandal”, where our recent former Head Coach Brian Flores alleged that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross offered Flores an extra $100K per game if the Dolphins lost in 2019 in order to secure a high draft pick.

Of course it matters whether these things are true or not, but the fact is, even if they aren’t, the damage is done. The NFL is not going to help us in any way if they find no wrongdoing. We’re damaged goods regardless. Controversies tend to linger around things even after the air has supposedly been cleared. The Jacksonville Jaguars are about to hire Doug Pederson as their Head Coach. Jim Harbaugh who was never interviewed by our Dolphins has told Michigan he’s returning for the 2022 season. Eric Bieniemy is getting another crack at an interview with the New Orleans Saints. The Dolphins will be interviewing both Mike McDaniel and Kellen Moore. I honestly wonder what is going through both of these guy’s minds considering the state of the Dolphins Franchise.

If there is any evidence that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross tried to incentivize HC Brian Flores to purposely lose games there will be significant punishment. I don’t know if Ross will be the sole recipient of said punishment or if the NFL will punish both the owner and the team. Obviously, the great majority of us would prefer they take the team away from Ross and leave the Dolphins Franchise alone. We’ve been through enough. Punishment such as taking away numerous draft picks would hurt. I feel like our roster is getting closer and a strong free agency along with with a good draft could really improve our roster. Take away a handful of draft picks, maybe our 1st RD picks this year and next and the next, and that hurts us badly because we have multiple picks next season in ’23 which would give us some nice flexibility to stand pat with two 1st rounders or move up if some reason if we decide to get a QB. It wouldn’t be the end of the world, but it would be unfortunate to fans who get punished so often by bad management of this team over the last couple of decades. We could use a break.

I feel like we’d be lucky to get Mike McDaniel at this point, and I’d be happy if we do. I made it clear that none of the candidates, with the exception of Jim Harbaugh really excited me, but McDaniel would be my preference out of who is left. Let’s get our Head Coach and then we’ll sit back and watch the drama unfold. Nothing would make me happier to find out Flores was just a spiteful, lying sack of shit and manufactured this whole story to drag the Dolphins through the mud after being jilted by the NY Giants, his dream job. BTW, I think his other allegations are very thin at best, against the Broncos and even more against the Giants. We know Bill Belichick is NFL royalty, but his word doesn’t mean squat here. He’s not employed by the New York Giants and I think those texts are meaningless to everyone except Bill Belichick, Brian Flores, and Brian Daboll who now probably feels bad for Brian Flores, or maybe he doesn’t and is reveling in this silliness.

I’d be lying if I were to say I’m confident that we’re clean. I don’t hate Stephen Ross like some of y’all do, I think he spends a lot of money trying to improve this team. Yes, he’s gone about some things the wrong way, especially for such an established businessman. We know he courted Jim Harbaugh while Tony Sparano was still the Dolphins Head Coach. So is it possible that Stephen Ross offered Flores money to tank to get a franchise QB, of course it is. I feel that Ross’s reputation could hurt us here in an investigation. We’ll see how this all plays out. It would be great to come out on top for a change.

As many of you already know, our friend Jon “Stanger” has been released from the hospital and is now doing inpatient physical and occupational therapy, which could be approximately a 2 week gig. It’s amazing how far he’s come and now the light really is close at the end of the tunnel. So happy for him!

Did I read that right? Flores is saying he told the players early in 2019 that Ross wanted them to tank? And all the players that heard that, both still on the team and the ones that left kept that to themselves?

If that is true, I’d think there will be a number of ex-Dolphins will come forward and corroborate that.
    ____
I read it as two separate statements. One he was making the claim, and he awkwardly transisitioned into being an honest person so he speaks to his players honestly.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

      Blog Turn?!?!?!?!?! -BB

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah honest, as in what he actually tells them, which is not much but not honest as in telling them everything

Belicheat didn’t start out as an asshat, he grew into it after having success, Flores was that from day 1

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ok, it was weird when I was reading it, and I wasn’t sure if it was missing context. He didn’t say right out that he stood up in front of the players and told them, he just implied something like it.

Wouldn’t a forthright and honest man say exactly what he means instead of hinting around it, lol 😉

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I think he’s just bad at communication, nothing to do with honesty. lol

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’s got too much belicheat in him, he doesn’t give out too much info, which is why it’s unlikely he told the players

He was probably asked, if he told the players, his quote was that of a response, so filtered and not of him having something planned, so open to a untruth or misleading

  2. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

“I deal in truth, I tell the players this, as well. I’m gonna give you good news, bad news — but it’s going to be honest.”
He’s telling the players he deals in truth. It was just a weird transition from the previous statement about what Ross was telling him to take vacations, make $100k, etc.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah, as if he was trying to say Ross and the 100k was true

By him doing that he’s using lawyer talk to twist the situation

  5. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Good write Mike. I concur with all of it. I honestly cannot believe we are in another mess. Leadership starts at the top, and it’s clear we have problems there. Not just Ross, but the entire front office.

  6. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

As shitty a situation we are in, I really can’t wait for the fest this year. Maybe because I couldn’t go this year because I went To a game with my son in his birthday, maybe because of Stanger , or a combination of the two. But I can’t wait to see you fuckers again!

  7. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I obviously agree with most of the article as I’ve been saying a lot of it myself. I hate when teams get punished for something a one or a few people have done. You see those college programs stripped of recruiting rights or being banned from tournament play, like what did those kids do to be punished? Right now it’s just a beef between Flores and Ross and the party that is guilty should face the punishment. The next coach or the players shouldn’t be saddled with this mess.
Anyway, It’s always good to hear more Stanger news. Thanks for the article Mike.

  8. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So we’re interviewing McDaniel and Moore today. Since this whole HC search started, Moore was the name I’d least like to see hired, so I expect we’ll hear by the end of the day he’s our guy! Fun!

Could imagine neither of them takes the position? What would be the ultimate embarrassment.

  10. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Watching some of Xs and Omar both O and Hyde were saying, it was pretty typical in the NFL, the good ole boy hiring of Daboll by ex Bills asst GM Schoen

So knowing that, and the fact that Flores did a first interview on the phone like 25 or 30 minutes with the Giants it makes this lawsuit seem even more staged

It’s like throw as much shit at the wall and see what sticks

The way I look at it is, when you throw a lot of shit at the wall and one thing is a lie, then you’re a liar

Was on OJ’s side until he tried putting the glove on, he could’ve put his hand in it, but acted like it was size 6 and he wore size 12

Nice write up Mike. On point!
This is still an NFL hc job and one of the better ones since it’s in Miami. I bet McDaniel will take the job if it’s offered.

It’s going to be one of those two

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not really, because if that were true getting Philbin, our 7th choice, instead of anyone else would’ve been just the same

We don’t have the insight the team has, but we generally know a bad hire, when we see one

With the #Dolphins, #Saints, #Texans jobs still open, would be great if Brian Flores, Leslie Frazier, and Byron Leftwich could get across the finish line.

Can make a strong argument for why each would be great fits for those situations.

I can make great arguments for each too

Frazier would keep the Saints D strong, Flores could learn why he needs a massage, and with Leftwich Ross wouldn’t have to worry about paying someone to tank

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was listening to WFAN, the “Tiki and Tierney Show”, which features former NYG RB Tiki Barber and radio guy Brandon Tierney. Some jackass calls and starts ripping into the Dolphins about Ross telling Flores to tank and forcing him to leave because of that. Of course Tierney agrees with the jackass, never mind the fucking timeline! So Ross asks Flores to tank in 2019 and Flores is so flabbergasted by this demand he immediately runs out the door at the end of 2021. C’mon guys, don’t be so lazy and realize what you’re saying! If he wasn’t fired he’d STILL be here, so cut the crap!

I would love to get Robinson or Cook.
Does no one on here like RB Jerome Ford but me?
To me he runs like Frank Gore, but even faster.
Look at the gifted footwork at the 2:50 mark in the highlights.

    He ran a 4.4 40 and a 10.6 100 meter in high school.
    5’11 220 is a great size ratio.
He’s from Tampa, so he knows the heat down here.
He transferred from Alabama to Cincinnati because the backfield was so crowded.
He helped take Cincy to the CFB playoffs.
He’s burly but has breakaway speed (see below)

In his Peach Bowl start against Georgia, Ford rushed eight times for 97 yards, including a 79-yard TD scamper, his longest rush of the campaign. He also added two receptions for 15 yards against the Bulldogs. Had three rushes of 40 or more yards, going for 79 against Georgia, 42 vs. Tulsa and 48 against Memphis. Four of his six TD runs were from 20+ yards out.

Broke away for three 70+ yard runs this year (four in his career)…Had a 75-yarder against Temple on Oct. 8, a 79-yarder against UCF on Oct. 16 and another 79-yarder against Houston in the AAC Championship game…Won the Orange Bowl Player of the Week for his performance against UCF.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

so he ran 7 times for an average of 2.58 yards and had one good run….

so he ran 7 times for an average of 2.58 yards and had one good run….
        —————————————–
This goes for all RB’s. Take away their biggest runs and you have mediocre average. Fact is, Ford does this a lot. He is big and a homerun threat at the same time. Cincinnati was a run first team and their opponents defended them in that way and Ford still produced.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Nah man, I was hyping Jerome Ford in the middle of the college season. I like him better than Brian Robinson because he gives you more speed to go with that size. Robinson has some but takes him 15 yards to get there.

  20. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Rock

I honestly can’t figure out where we are going this draft
So I end up with 2 wrs and 2 RBs

I Can see drafting 2 wrs if we don’t resign a receiver
But rb I don’t know about
Duke Johnson was promising and so was Phillip Lindsey

I do think we can use 2 LBs if we keep the same defensive staff

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I have had a hard time doing mocks as well. Not only because of the uncertainty of our FA and the new coaching regime, but also because of the shit poor positioning of our picks due to the incompetents of Grier trading away our picks and keeping other teams picks.

It is hard to pick at the end of the rounds.

  21. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I wonder how McDaniel’s interview is going. It should be underway by now. Moore is tomorrow I believe.

Did we already comply with the Roonie rule with one of our other interviews?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ugh, I thought they were both today, but you’re right, Moore’s is tomorrow. I was hoping we’d know by tonight

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We really don’t need much to get to the next level,
given that we resign who we should of our own FAs.
We need a RT, ILB, 2 WR, and a RB.
To insure against busts, we could double up and draft 2 RBs, 2 ILBs, and 3 WRs.
    (see Piggy’s above)
We should either sign a FA RT or draft one at #29 (my preference).
(PS We need a back up QB also.) (Mike White is out there, as is Mariotta.)

  23. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We could try to sign Trevor Siemian. He threw 11 TDs to only 3 INTs and was paid less than $1M last year.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I would much rather have Marcus Marriotta ad our back up QB. Very similar skill set and familiar with the same type of offense that Tua runs

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I’m not sure back up QB is the top of our priority list right now. 😂

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We MUST have a back-up who can come in for a stretch and not automatically lose every game. It’s critical
        Because
        Brissett is a FA.
He is not quite the same type player as Tua, so OC has to alter plans which further impinges performance of the offense.
Tua gets nicked up a lot.
It’s a 17-game season now, so there’s more need than ever.

Marriotta was dealing with an injury around that time. Marriotta has looked pretty good when he has had to play for car. System wise he is a natural fit. I mean we are talking about a back up QB. There is no one out there that will set the world on fire

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Herd – I hear ya. It couldn’t hurt our chances any

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, again, like that draft a lot. Especially the 2 LB’s you doubled down on. Fast and can both play ILB but have the versatility to move around.

What makes you so high on Ross with his injury history and #’s that kept going down year after year? He is a 4.53 guy and that was before his ACL reconstruction and other injuries. He is in the same boat as Pickens as far as buyer beware. IMO

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – If Tua won the job, I think that would be a pill Garoppolo couldn’t swallow. I guess the only saving grace is Tua’s injury history and the potential for him to likely get some playing time. I suppose the same could be said for Garoppolo too though.

  30. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t see Garropolo coming here. He is still under contract and don’t see us trading for him

  31. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think if McDaniel is our new HC we draft a RB by the 3rd round. That is unless we sign like Fournette.

Without it, what’s he got really?

This is an A+ draft if Allie Green can play special teams or return kicks or something to earn a roster spot.
    ————————————-
Thanks Naples! I was looking to add another DT at 157 but both I like there were gone in John Ridgeway III, Arkansas who is in the mold of a Reakwon Davis and Matthew Butler, Tennessee who is a strong underrated run stopper and a quick gap shooter like Zack Seiler. So, I went OL instead even though I do these drafts with the mindset of addressing OL in FA.

Allie Green IV can play ST but not so much as a returner. I am looking at late round DB’s and he is a physical press CB at 6’3 206. Really strong in run support. I could see him possibly moving to SS in the same way Rowe did but would be better in run support with his physicality. Only 1 INT in his 4 years so he is not a ballhawk CB. That is why I think moving him to replace Rowe in the future may work.

I mean, if I were McDaniel and I left without being told I was the guy, that would tell me they are still unsure of me. Then, if they were to call me after they interview Moore, I might say never mind, I am staying where I am. It’s not like they are having to screen 100 applications.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBM – I think they have to interview Moore. It would be unprofessional to cancel at this late date. It never hurts to hear other perspectives anyway, no one else is hiring McDaniel before tomorrow, so don’t sweat it.

All I really know about Mike McDaniel is that he’s considered a run game guru, he’s well respected, has good people skills and does have 16 years of coaching experience. Nobody knows if he can lead the entire team as HC. So I do have some reservations. We’ll see.

  74. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

In high school I played fullback, TE, split end, and strong safety (everybody but the QB went both ways back then). I was 6’2 180. When it came to college, I was too light for TE and FB and too slow for DB and WR.

    ————-
If he can actually assemble a quality staff, I’ll be thrilled. Until then, I’d say about a 1.42. JMO, but this is the same mistake Steve Ross made with hiring Philbin and then Gase.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t compare people like you do. Everyone is different. I go by resume until proven otherwise.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I hear ya, but McDaniel doesn’t have much on his resume other than being Kyle Shanahan’s lackey.

I don’t dislike the guy, but he’s got a LOT to prove… first off, can he actually assemble a quality staff? That’s been a repeated failure by Steve Ross… to hire these up-and-comers, but they don’t have the connections that say a Brian Daboll would have. Know what I mean?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s not true. Go look at who he’s coached under. He’s not a lackey. That’s disrespectful. He’s been coaching for 16 years on a few different teams. He’s met and worked with a lot of coaches. But I agree putting a staff together is the key for all HC’s. Then commanding the room.

  76. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

McDaniel, O’Connell (Rams OC), and Hackett were my 3 faves for our new HC.
So I would love it if we get this guy.
Get him a Deebo type, a breakaway RB, another 4.4 WR, and we could score 30 / game.
That Shanahan playbook stress defenses horizontally and vertically and has multiple formations.
    Tua > Garopolo

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

McDaniel actually has a fun personality, unlike Philbin, who is too introverted.

    —————
Bro, he’s a Shanahan disciple. In his 16 years of coaching, there were only 4 years where he wasn’t under the Shanahan umbrella (and even then, I’m willing to bet there was some kind of connection). Yes, Kubiak is part of the Shanahan tree, even when McDaniel worked with the Texans (there’s the bloody Texans again! LOL).

Perhaps “lackey” was a bad choice of words, and I didn’t mean it to sound disrespectful. However, this guy has seemingly been the benefactor of strictly working under the Shanahans. He truly hasn’t worked with a lot of coaches, only the ones under the same fertile tree… namely Kyle.

McDaniel isn’t going to poach half of Kyle’s staff to come work with him in Miami: I think you understand what I’m saying.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m well aware of his history. I’ve read up on it. You said he’s just been a Kyle Shanahan lackey. But that tree doesn’t bother me, I’m a fan of that offense which you should know. I thought we both wanted Kubiak as HC in the past. I think it’s a time tested offense.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You’re not wrong, Bro… but the mofo hasn’t even called plays as an OC! I swear to God I’m not trying to crap on McDaniel (I like the guy, actually!), but he wasn’t the best candidate to be our next HC.

Per usual, we got left with sloppy seconds after many of the other HC positions were filled out.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s not true either. Who did we lose other than Daboll?

  80. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think I know almost nothing about McDaniel.
But it seems what is needed in Miami is somebody that’s a breath of fresh air.
He needs to be eccentric enough that the Miami press hacks can’t draw a bead on him.
He needs to have an offense that is exciting enough to not let the fan base whiners tear him down.
He needs to rip pressers with sound bites and out-cool South Beach.
Miami’s a circus and the HC needs to embrace that off the field while putting a sound and tough as nails team on the field.
Everything I’ve seen McDaniel do and say tells me he might be uniquely qualified to be relatable to the coolest players while grounded himself enough to survive the personal sniping.
Just one example is his discussion of being biracial.
The whole country should read that and be like that.
    Sensitive yet above it all.

  81. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, I was trying to focus on the team and football not so much continuing to bash Ross. We need a HC.

Most of the teams that win have 1st time HC’s. The 2nd and 3rd time around HC’s do not have a great track record. There are a handful, but not many. Of the 14 playoff teams this year 9 are 1st time HCs. Daboll will be a 1st time HC by the way.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But unlike McDaniel (and I’m not trying to bash him), Daboll has actually been around and has met all kinds of coaches… Daboll should be able to hire a successful staff. McDaniel? I’m not so sure. We’ll see!

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

McDaniel has been around almost as long as Daboll

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We both liked Daboll first, he went to the Giants. Daboll started his coaching career 24 years ago. McDaniel 16 years ago. You keep acting like McDaniel is a 4-5 year coach.

Nobody knows if Daboll will be a good HC either. But I’m rooting for him because I like him and I root for the Giants.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Joe Biden has been around almost as long as Master Yoda!!! LOL
That’s not the point, Greeny! LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I liked Flores and was bummed we fired him. That’s over. In 2 years I’m going to storm out of this blog professionally and say he sucks as a coach and a person and do the right thing when it benefits me the most.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, I think calling plays is overrated. Most HC’s don’t call plays. He’s not being hired as OC. Even if he decides to call plays, until you see if he’s good at or not why act like it’s the most complicated thing in the world. There is much more to coaching than calling the plays in games that you coach and practice everyday.

  84. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Have I ever actively rooted against my/your/our team? HELL NO!!!
If McDaniel is it, I’m all-in: HELL YEAH!!!

I just feel that Steve Ross could have gotten a better candidate with more experience and longer branches. But of course, Steve Ross had to Steve Ross… because that’s what Steve Ross does: he Steve Ross-es.

  85. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I really understand your concern about “assembling a staff” but I doubt McDaniel has no idea of who he could get at this late stage. I’m sure with his infectious personality, he’s a gas to hang with.
If he knows some young guys who, again, relate well to this generation of players and make the game fun, then that will go a long way toward establishing the esprit de corps that is AKA chemistry.
I’d rather have a bunch of energetic young bucks a la Christian Wilkins than vast experience and talent that only equates to Joe Flacco. Bless his heart.
I know those are players, but I don’t know a lot of young coaches’ names out there. Just please no more Chan Gaileys. Bless his heart.

I don’t think Daboll was our first choice. There was no indication that we had or were going to make an offer to him. All indications are that we were bidding our time for McDaniel

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I say we were waiting on Jim Harbaugh… who eventually said, “Nah, I’m good in Michigan, guys!” after the latest Steve Ross blunder. JMO.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McDaniel has been in the discussion since day one. He’s not a leftover. He’s been a target all along.

    • D's avatar D says:

Like most any situation, the proof is in the actions. If it was Daboll and we were expecting him to garner a lot of attention we would have moved faster, we would have at least had a second interview and an offer out there. It could have turned out the same and he took the other job, but if he was top of the list, we would have missed out but had made an offer.

Same for Peterson, same for Harbaugh. I don’t think we had strong interest in either. Most likely they already had strong inclinations toward going with a new fresh mind and that’s why its down to second interviews with the people we have them with.

  88. D's avatar D says:

I don’t see Robinson making it past the 3rd personally, could go in the second. Cook probably about the same maybe a round later high and low.

  89. D's avatar D says:

I’m thinking Flores is coming unhinged, like is probably not an “angry black man” thing its probably and mentally unstable human being thing.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve thought the same thing recently. He’s alienating himself from the league for a civil rights type of thing. How could a team hire him as HC with this going on? You hired a HC who’s suing the NFL? Maybe he eventually gets a DC job or maybe just an assistant job as a LB coach. Or nobody hires him. That’s where he’s at.

McDaniel hasn’t been confirmed, right? We’re speculating based on the Niners new hire?

I wonder how this news makes Kellen Moore feel about his interview with us tomorrow. Will he feel like it’s a sham interview or will he look at it as a chance to gain experience in the NFL interview process at this level and sharpen his interview skills? 🤔

  94. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“It seems like all the wrinkles that you see in the run game around the league, a lot of them originate from the 49ers. They’re just little small things they do first.
