1 Week Later – Coaching Staff Set!

For those of you (like myself) concerned about how long it would take, and how well young Head Coach Mike McDaniel would fill out his staff, the answer is one week, and I believe he did remarkably well. I have to say that I have more confidence in Mike McDaniel than any other hire of a Head Coach we’ve made solely based on the quality level of staff he assembled. Good people were eager to come here to work with McDaniel, and that says a lot. Let’s look at the staff . . .

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR – Frank Smith

QB’s Coach/Pass Game Coordinator – Darrell Bevell

Running Backs/Associate Head Coach – Eric Studesville

Wide Receivers Coach – Wes Welker

Offensive Line Coach – Matt Applebaum

Tight Ends Coach/ Assistant Head Coach – Jon Embree

Assistant QB’s Coach – Chandler Henry

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR – Josh Boyer

Defensive Line Coach – Austin Clark

Linebackers Coach – Anthony Campanile

Outside Linebackers Coach – Tyrone McKenzie

Defensive Backs Coach – Sam Madison

Cornerbacks Coach – Charles Burks

SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR – Danny Crossman

As you can see, the entire staff is filled out, and there’s plenty of experience there beefing up the offensive side of the ball. Frank Smith, our new OC was previously the run game coordinator and Assistant O-Line Coach for the Chargers. Darrell Bevel has plenty of experience as an Offensive Coordinator for the Vikings, Seahawks and Jaguars as well as short stints as Head Coach for both the ‘Hawks and Jags. Once again, I stress experience. Jon Embree TE’s Coach is partly responsible for molding TE George Kittle into one of the best, and likely most well rounded Tight End in the NFL. Travis Kelce may be a better receiver, but it’s close there because of Kittle’s run after catch ability. Kittle is an able and willing blocker at the LOS, as well as downfield. Eric Studesville, half of our Co-Co tandem returns as Running Backs Coach. WR Wes Welker returns to Miami to be our Wide Receivers Coach. Great to have a guy who relied on technique and smarts his entire career to be coaching our guys. Matt Applebaum, former Boston College and Towson Unviersity Offensive Line Coach. He may have the toughest job of all, but other guys on our staff have experience working with the O-line so I believe that will help Applebaum.

On the defensive side of the ball, Josh Boyer returns as DC, despite all the controversy between he and former Coach Brian Flores. Also returning is Defensive Line Coach Austin Clark. Newcomers are Anthony Campanile as Linebackers Coach and Tyrone McKenzie as OLB Coach. Miami welcomes back our own Sam Madison, former All Pro Cornerback as our Defensive Backs Coach. Love the 2 nods to former Dolphins players! Charles Burks rounds out the defense as the Cornerbacks Coach. Danny Crossman returns to the team as Special Teams Coordinator.

McDaniel wasted no time building his staff, and once again, he did it with lots of quality people, people rich in experience at high level positions, former HC’s and former coordinators, people who have experience at multiple positions. There seemed to be no shortage of people willing to work for/with McDaniel which speaks volumes of how he is perceived in NFL circles. Not to beat a dead horse, but the fact Flores was unable to do the same, and couldn’t even keep the ones he personally brought here speaks volumes to how he is perceived in NFL circles as well.

I think the Dolphins were very careful from the get go to portray this hire of Mike McDaniel as a positive move, not just finding a guy to replace the guy they unceremoniously booted out. Call me a sucker, but I loved the phone call to Tua. I believe that McDaniel is wanting to come in here and wring out the best Tua can be, although many don’t share my enthusiasm for Tua, I think he’s a LOT better than what he gets credit for. If he can stay healthy, I think he will prove just how good he is when he has a staff that is truly behind him. Of Course Chris Grier has his work cut out to fnd the players to help Tua succeed. There are obvious needs and they must be addressed.

Offensive Line to me is the biggest issue. That doesn’t mean we have to bring in 5 new players, to the contrary, I think 2 players, and a draftee would do it. You guys know I’d love to bring in former 49ers OG Laken Tomlinson. He’d be an anchor for our line, a plug and play guy who plays every game and knows his responsibilities. Guys like that make the guys next to him better, they just do. It’s why I think it’s way too premature to give up on the guys we have in house. Sorry to bore you avid readers but I still believe that Austin Jackson, and Liam Eichenberg are potential NFL tackles. I think Austin can retake his LT position and I believe Eichenberg might be our future RT, as early as 2022. I think we need another interior lineman, a Center who could also play OG. Ted Karras who was here in 2020, is one possible answer. Ethan Pocic, 2nd RD pock of the ‘Hawks has played both C and OG for the Seahawks. If we go whole hog so to speak, maybe we bring in former Washington Redskins stalwart Brandon Scherrf. I hate to spend top dollar my friends, but if there’s a place worthy of the investment, it’s on the O-line. I also feel like it would be foolish to give up on OG Solomon Kindley. We’ll see how how the new offensive regime feels. We’ll also find out in the draft which follows Free Agency as to what importance they feel of upgrading the RB position. We’ve longed for better RB’s, but all signs seem to point to a RB by committee approach. We’ll have to wait and see, but we won’t have to wait long as NFL Free Agency begins March 16th, less than a month away.

Amazing that Tunsil is still only 27. Yeah I’d trade a 2nd for him. He’s already one of our all time greats.

  3. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tunsil is on the books to make $17 mil and $18 mil in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Articles speculating on his trade suggest it would take at least a first-rounder. With our low one that would probably mean a third or fourth pick or two thrown in.

stangerx, I think Ross does the best he can for Dolphins. You can’t say he doesn’t try and shows it with his spending. I like that about him. So, I’m not even close to hatred territory….lol.

    Dolphins sign QB Chris Streveler

The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed quarterback Chris Streveler.

Streveler has played in seven career games over two seasons (2020-21) with Arizona, completing 17-of-25 passes (68.0 pct.) for 141 yards and one touchdown. He also spent part of the 2021 season on Baltimore’s practice squad. Streveler played two seasons (2018-19) for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League and was part of the Blue Bombers’ 2019 Grey Cup championship team.

Let’s see if McDaniels Ivy League education taught him anything. Why do so many coaches forget to get and keep the best players, this guy doesn’t seem like he needs a particular type of player and that’s what I like. Get and keep the best players and put them in situations where they can be successful. Hisins and what not and urine whatever the saying is.

Where do you feel Gesicki and Ogbah fit in?

  19. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I’m quite familiar with Streveler, as he was the local QB here for a bit and helped us win our 1st of back to (insert Covid) back Grey Cups.. he has a big arm , accuracy not really his forte.. the dude likes to Truck people and not easy to tackle once he starts running .. Fitz plus a bit of Josh Allen , and throw in a little Tayson Hill … he’s been Murray’s back up in Zona last 2 years … almost automatic on QB sneaks and can actually bust through the line for some larger gains … not someone I want starting the entire year, but we were worse off last year IMHO

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was waiting for you to chime in on him. I like the Tayson Hill role for Streveler but think you need to keep a more traditional passer as a backup. You let a guy like him play his role and in a pinch can play QB. We see often that once a team loses their starter they struggle to win anyway. Nothing wrong with having a versatile weapon that can run and throw. This guy looks like he’d play on STs too.

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Son, I agree that you build around talented players. Put them in positions to be successful. For me unless you use Gesicki on medium and deep routes often – trying to find ways to get him open on the move, he’s limited. I’ll be interested to find out how he’s being viewed by McD.

  21. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’ll be interested to see what they do with Gesicki, too. I could be wrong, but I’ve always thought of him as an unused weapon…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wonder if it’s so much unused which I think is exaggerated or not always open. I’ve mentioned it before but he’s kind of a 3 route guy, deep outs, ins and posts. He struggles in crowded spaces. I like what he brings to the table, but wearing my GM hat makes me a little hesitant about what he should get paid.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Perhaps, but there is no one on the roster with his catch radius and hands. Do you disagree with that?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes, and Parker. But both are limited for different reasons but they create mismatches at times.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

So you disagree because there is Parker?

So you would let both go. I would definitely fire Parker…last year.

  22. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Tim : based on what Brissett put on the field last year Streveler would be considered an upgrade … I think he is a good cheap option as a back up .. his arm isn’t horrible, just sometimes not as accurate as I would like … I’d be okay if he had to finish or even start 1-2 games … he will not be our future franchise QB, but hopefully we already have that .. 🤷‍♂️

So, the way I read this latest news:

Flores says he was asked to sign an NDA and he lost money because he wouldn’t sign it (I’m assuming the last 2 years on his contract??)

Dolphins say that was categorically false, he wasn’t asked to sign an NDA.

Above post shows the letter the Dolphins sent saying he was no longer entitled to non accrued benefits because he didn’t sign the termination notice which included an NDA.

I mean, unless those documents are altered, it backs up what Flores said, and why did the Dolphins deny something so easy to verify?

      Am I missing something?

  24. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    That’s what NDAs are…

  25. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Not sure his experience was a bad one either….or thinking somehow the Dolphins’ wronged him. And, Grier fired him. I don’t get it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Racism with the Dolphins is a lame claim. So racism was part of his firing with a black GM, black asst. GM and a black senior executive. Have any of those guys resigned due to racism in the building? Flores is treading on thin ice.

  26. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

JMO, but I don’t think this is going away regarding Flores vs. Ross. I just hope the league doesn’t penalize our team as a whole… meaning Draft picks lost.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’d be willing to bet that Flores’ camp drops the lawsuit against the NFL, the Broncos and Bills… but they go 100% after Steve Ross.

Call it a gut-feeling, but this is what I foresee happening.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t know why you have that gut feeling, it’s completely inconsistent with his suit or what he’s been saying publicly

He chose to file a class action suit

A suit against the Dolphins alone would have been much simpler

Besides, he’s not cutting the nfl out of anything if he thinks he’s got the Dolphins on the hook for anything
The nfl is essentially the top of the Dolphins totem pole

They are basically the employer of the employer

If he dropped a suit against the nfl it would be like some one saying I won’t sue well fargo bank, I’ll just sue the bank branch

The nfl is always on the hook for the acts of every team

The discrimination he is alleging requires the pattern and history he gets from the entire nfl to be worth anything – the nature of his case is not just him v the Dolphins

Would have and should have been totally different from the start if he wanted to just pursue the Dolphins

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Not sure if this means anything to you or the nonlawyers

But it’s not just a lawsuit vs a lot of different defendants where he can drop the case against other defendants who settle or he doesn’t have a case against

It’s categorically different in its nature bc it’s a class action suit

So it’s going to be hard for him to backtrack on that now

  27. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I just don’t see how an off the cuff (stupid) remark be damaging. Wouldn’t you have filed a lawsuit then when you were agrieved? Instead, you thought it damaging 3 years later. That’s tough for me to groc.

  28. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Are you saying Flores had this righteous racist pent-up strategic change the world in NFL chess move? How do you get to checkmate with that?

  29. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Wait till you’re fired?

I just don’t see why he called out the Dolphins, mentioning Ross, but leaving Grier out. GM and HC should be on the same page.

    Yet they weren’t…so that’s Ross’s fault?

  30. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Piggy, I think I get what you’re saying. But, why call out a branch of Wells Fargo (the Dolphins) when there’s nothing racial?

I don’t get that any owner would only joke like Ross did to a black coach in a similar context. That’s reaching and makes it unpalatable to me.

    Pigster,

I do understand where you’re coming from, and rightfully so, from the legal standpoint… and Lord knows you know the law better than me. I just can’t help but feel in my gut that this ends with just Flores vs Ross, and nothing more. There will be deals between the NFL and Flores.

Think about it (at least from my standpoint) like this: ask for 100, even when you know you may only get 50, tops… “The Art of the Deal”.

I honestly don’t believe Flores has a leg to stand on regarding racial BS in the NFL… but I honestly believe he has a case against Ross. Just my $.02, bud.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

If he is trying to prove a pattern of discrimination in coaching he has to keep the other defendants in the case. If he lets them out it weakens his case against Ross

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because you want Ross to lose and sell. What if Flores is a fucking liar and can’t handle criticism and being fired. Is it possible he’s that insecure? I mean he accused John Elway and the Denver brass of being hungover and not taking him seriously in the interview in 2019. They fucking hired Vance Joseph as HC in 2017 before you were interviewing as a HC, Brian. Stop!!!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Flores very well could be a liar… but if he doesn’t have a case, why would he pursue it? I may be leading you to the answer, but I don’t want to get political, either. 😉

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

After letting it all play out for a month or so, I see an insecure man who decided to play the race card and use that for his benefit with no conscience towards others who were not being racist. So yes he joined the political movement of the BLM agenda as a crutch. He’s also horrible at articulating his accusations. Kind of like a liar who needs to remember their lies.

Sometimes ya just have to play the game in order to gain momentum or gain a foothold (in this case, a brand new HCing job). And I’m NOT talking about anything racial here, as it pertains to Flores.

Honestly, had Flores come out 3 years ago and in the moment that Ross offered him $100K to throw games, he’d been immediately fired and branded by all owners in the league: NEVER TRUST Brian Flores.

This is a sad reality, and it’s NOT about racism, IMO. This applies to so many people trying to come up.

SO many people trying to come up in EVERY walk of life.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Well I’m going to disagree with that entirely.

I know what it’s like to be asked for a favor, compromise my principles, and risk my status financially and professionally. Once I explain that you can’t make me compromise my principles or buy me, we either move forward or we don’t.

I have never looked back 3 years in a relationship to find some grudge….why bother going forward 3 years only to hold that grudge? That’s fucked.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s all good to disagree, man… and I’m not advocating that we humans should act like what I stated above… it’s just that most of us do, sadly.

I respect your take, in that we should ALL strive to be like that.

  36. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I don’t see a case against Ross. Accusations only. Tounge in cheek to me…unless there’s something more.

If it was true and he felt it true at time, then speak up at the time. There’s nothing chess-like about this. I think it’s desperate.

  37. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    We’ll see what happens…

  38. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

We let Gesicki go, and I think we regret that for years to come. Some complain about his lack of blocking- that’s not what he does and never will be. He didn’t do that at PSU, hasn’t done that with us, and never will. Can he run every route? No He had 73 catches for over 10 YPC. The yards per catch were down but that was likely due to our anemic offense. It’s crazy to me how under utilized he was in the red zone this year. With a HC and an OC who don’t have their heads up their asses, I think Gesicki can grow into one of the top TEs in the NFL.

  39. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – I can’t see how you can defend Flores. If he was a righteous man he could have let this all out while he was here and resigned as Head Coach due to what was asked of him. The problem with him is he did all this after getting fired, more than 2 years after this all went down. If he was so disgusted by what he was asked to do, resign and tell all. Instead, he stays 2 seasons after, and then when he gets fired, he gets on this lawsuit that has no teeth. Then after the lawsuit is out, he uses the lawsuit as the scapegoat as to why he doesn’t get a HC gig. He just seems like an impetuous child who’s angry things aren’t going his way.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I don’t think the 2 things cancel either other out. He can still be an impetuous child who’s angry things aren’t going his way, and Ross could still be someone who did all of those things. I don’t feel they had anything to do with his race though.
Imagine working your whole life working up the ranks to get a 1/32 chance in the world of head coaching a football team. You move your family to a new state. You brings friends and guys you know to the team to coach or play. Then your owner asks you do something wrong. You don’t do, so the team moves on. Then you’re asked another thing, then another and you’re trying to make the best out of a bad situation because people are depending on you. So you tough it out, get fired, and it’s leaked in the press that you’re a problem child. Then another owner calls you up and says you’re the guy only to not be the guy. You see your chances of becoming a HC again going away.
I don’t agree with how he’s handled things, but he’s gotten bad advice from his lawyers who were more interested in making him the MLK of football, then what was in his best interests. Had they not filed the lawsuit on Feb 1st in order to make a statement, he probably would have gotten the HOU job or at least been able to get a prime DC job somewhere.

  40. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

It seems odd to me, that a team so devoid of offensive weapons would let Gesicki go. I understand if he makes contract demands to be paid like Devante Adams, but I haven’t seen anything from Gesicki that says he’s that kind of guy. We were willing to throw $10 million for an oft injured role player wide receiver, but we can’t send that kind of cash to one of our own? We’ve got two new coaches on offense who previously specialized in TE’s coaching. One of them worked with Darren Waller. If they aren’t willing to re-sign Gesicki, they better nab a guy like Dalton Schultz. Other than that, you’re thrift shopping.

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – Sorry man, the way he handled it, if true was like he gave up before he started fighting. Like you said, he’d be a HC right now if he didn’t get involved with that lawsuit. He also could have alleged Ross asked him to tank w/o jumping into the lawsuit. It’s like he said white man is keeping me down and I’m going to make sure it stays that way by getting into this lawsuit that will insure I stay down. It didn’t have to go that way.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m also not saying that Ross is squeaky clean here, but this wouldn’t be the first NFL tank job and it won’t be the last either.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’m not sure why you’re apologizing. I agree that he mishandling the situation. I just don’t think it’s as easy as quitting the first year after being asked to tank. He surely wouldn’t have been given many chances after that. Like I said, he had more than himself to look out for at that moment. Now that’s pretty much all he has.

He’s right that there aren’t a lot of black head coaches, but he was employed by the only team in the NFL with a black HC and GM. Hard to make the case against the Phins at that point.

So the Dolphins asked Flores to sign a separation agreement in return for getting severance pay. Isn’t that what everyone has to do to get it? How it worked every place I’ve been. And non-disparagement pledges are often included.

    HEIGHT: 6’2 3/4″

    WEIGHT: 208

    POSITIVES

    — Good height, size and length as an outside receiver.
    — Very good overall athlete with body control and explosive jumping ability.
    — Legit weapon in the red zone. Has very good catching range and can consistently high-point throws and adjust for back-shoulder throws.
    — Aligned outside and in the slot for Cincinnati.
    — Consistently wins versus press because of his good foot quickness, balance and play strength.
    — Good hands. Comfortable extending for throws away from his body.
    — Above-average overall route-runner who showed improvement as the season went along.
**** Has experience and production as a special teamer.
**** Willing blocker with good play strength and effort.

I changed the – to **** for two of the most important traits for a “lesser” WR in our system.

Because that’s where he excels. He doesn’t get the YAC on the short stuff like the other top TEs do because he’s not a quick twitch guy. If you’re going to pay him, use him as a vertical guy, that’s his strength. Even if he’s lining up as more of a WR than a TE, who’s going to cover him down the field? You putting a LB, S or CB on him? His height, long speed and the ability to high point the ball is always going to be a mismatch. You run him on the short stuff and the opponent is happy about that.

  75. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Miami media loves to sell the negative. We retain Josh Boyer with the idea that the defense will remain the same. Many us were for that. So what report comes out, that Flores took over play calling duties when the defense got better in the 2nd half of the season and many players were unhappy that Boyer was retained.

If we didn’t retain him the reports would have been, now the Dolphins defense will change and have to start over when they were very good at the system they were playing in. You see how they always set up the negative regardless of what we do.

I’m glad I can’t read SS articles anymore without paying for it because now I can’t see the nonsense. LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Part of the problem we’ve had in Miami with the vertical passing game is the OL has not been good enough during Gesicki’s career. Vertical routes need more than 1.5 seconds to develop. When they did provide the time Gesicki was successful. When he’s not being targeted it was usually because the QB had to break the pocket and improv because of pressure. Then sometimes he wasn’t open. No receiver gets open every play.

Gesicki needs to run 5 yards to get going, stick his foot in the ground and go in or out and stretch the play. You don’t throw him passes when he’s static. He’s an easy tackle.

  78. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The one thing everyone says about Tua is he’s extremely accurate. That’s the best trait for a QB, not being able to throw a football 75 yards. There are amateurs that can do that but can’t hit the broad side of a barn. How does that help you score points? Wow did you see how far he threw that pass, I know it was incomplete but wow what an arm. Think about a big pitcher who can throw a 100mph but can’t throw a strike. How does that help you get guys out?

  81. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I admit I don’t quite know what all of this means, but at the same time, I’m not evaluating Tua based on the offense we’ve had in Miami since he’s been here. It’s been a hodgepodge of direction and personnel for years. We haven’t had an identity on offense since Sparano. Isn’t that wild but it’s true. It was conservative and run oriented with Ricky and Ronnie. But at least you knew what it was. I feel like under Philbin, Gase and Flores it was always an experiment and changing.

Please coach McD, give us an identity on offense. He even mentioned that in his PC, I want everyone to know what Miami Dolphins football is all about. He kept Boyer on defense because everyone knows what the Dolphins defense is about. They created an identity over the last 3 years. The offense not so much.

Under Flores we had Chad O’Shea in 19, Chan Gailey in 2020 and we know the dual OC’s last year. No continuity there. Flores also went through 4 OL coaches in that time. How do you create an identity by dressing up as someone different every Halloween? LOL

  82. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I bet he can make a great tackle out of Austin Jackson

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I want another Waddle type WR so you never know which one is working underneath or going deep. We didn’t have that last year. Wilson was supposed to be that but he disappeared far too often. Bowden went down early and missed the season. Gesicki, Parker and Hollins are all big guys who are not going to excel in the short passing game. Where do we go from here?

I left Preston Williams out of it because he can’t get through 3 seasons without getting hurt. He only played in 8 games each season.

The WR position needs to be revamped. Oh wait, so does the OL and RB.

I’m excited about a new direction. McD is an offense guy so you know he wants that to work. At the end of the day it’s about wins and losses. Everyone knows that. Go Phins!!!

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, the difference on offense is we said how about this guy the last few years. LOL

  85. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Imagine if Flores ego and inability to communicate with his coaches didn’t exist and we had kept Chad O’Shea after the first year. The offense started to click over the second half of the season and we were looking more and more like the NE offense. It was a good mix of under center vs. shotgun. We were running multiple variations of plays from the same formation. We were keeping defenses on their toes, despite a lackluster offensive roster.
Here’s an article saying why Flores fired O’Shea
    https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2892682-dolphins-reportedly-fired-oc-chad-oshea-because-of-complex-playbook
So the playbook that everyone was starting to get by proof of success on the field was too complex and he absolutely had to go after one year? The guy he handpicked to lead the other side of the ball? Flores coudn’t get his coach and players to work together on which concepts were too complex and come up with a solution? Rumor was at least one of his Co-OCs were going to be gone had he not been fired himself. So that would have been another OC gone in as many years. Check the ego Flores. Know that most of the failure was your fault.

I know ORob is (was) blocked so I’m not going to pile on and diss him when he has no right to reply, but I think it was he who claimed that every time Gesicki was on the field, we telegraphed our intentions and were also incapable of running with that personnel grouping. This tweet thread seems to refute that contention.

I like Gesicki and I think you find a way to pay your play-makers and improve them. Btw, what happened to “We need playmakers?”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think ORob made his statement based off of 2020, Gesicki did improve some as a blocker in 2021 and should improve again, ir re-signed

We ran the ball 442 times in 2021, 26 times a game, 69% of that was from 12 personnel

You really can’t measure your stars based totally on stats, look what happened to AZ after Nuke went down

Take Gesicki out of our O and it takes a step back, before the first practice

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

The takeaway from this is you have to have talent on the field so that it frees up other guys to make plays and have opportunity for success. You let Gesicki go but you better replace him with someone who can at least match his production. There won’t be a lot of guys available in the FA market to do so and teams still have time to re-sign their own, shriveling up the market. Also, did anyone see clips of Hunter Long blocking last year? Wasn’t all that spectactular.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Agree up to this point

SB, yeah, I went back and watched Gaskins and Duke’s running plays to watch our TE’s blocking and where they lined up. Shaheen and Hunter Long looked slow getting to their blocks many times while Smythe was very good. Long also got pushed around a bit. He needs to play with more attitude/meanness. Gesicki mostly lined up in slot and ran routes to open things up to keep safeties and LB’s honest then looked for someone to get in the way of on the second level.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I’ll second that. But then I’ve never read a bad Mike E blog leader.

For me, McD will be judged firstly on ability to develop what we have and how successfully we draft from his input p-o-v. Secondly on ability to game plan different opponents and finally his in-game adjustments and flexibility to counter what teams try to do to us and adapt what isn’t working to get a competitive advantage. I don’t ask for much!

His in game adjustments in SF is what made their O go, even the NFC Championship game against the Packers, where they ran all over them, they still had to adjust
