Dolphins 2022 – Upgrade the roster

With the 2022 coaching staff intact, the next step is upgrading the personnel that plays on the gridiron. March 1-7 is the NFL Combine in Indiana. Unlike many years past, we’re not armed with an arsenal of picks, but it doesn’t matter. Just hit on a few picks and we’ll be a better team. In reality, the same teams are pretty much in the playoffs or at least in the hunt every season, despite picking near the end of each round and not having 10-12 draft picks. It’s the quality of the picks that count. Considering how much money we have available in 2022 cap space, we’ll already have addressed some key issues before we even enter the fray of the 2022 NFL Draft. The next most relevant date is March 8th, which is the deadline for teams to apply either the Franchise Tag or Transition Tag to players. I’ve actually never been less sure on how we proceed in this regard. You all know how much I love TE Mike Gesicki but I just don’t know what Mike McDaniel thinks about Gesicki and if he’s a viable fit in his system. His talent is undeniable as a receiver, but the biggest question is not necessarily whether he can block, it’s did the previous staffs even ask him to?

The next date is key for us, because March 14-16 is when teams can contact players/agents of NFL Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA’s). There will be fierce competition for O-line players as most every team has O-line issues. We’ll have to pay dearly to get who we want, but really, who cares? Just get them! Not my money, not my problem. This is why you get yourself in the position of having among the highest cap space, so you have the freedom to spend it. Let’s face it, we need at least 1 or 2 guys that will step in immediately and upgrade our offensive line. Draft picks, even the best of them have a break in period. We can’t afford that. This team has started slow each of the last 3 seasons and because of that, we were on the outside looking in during the playoffs. We need to come out of the gate quick, and 2 veteran anchors on the O-line would make that more likely. On March 16th, Free Agency begins and the cash will be flowing. Spend it well Miami! Also on March 1th, after 4PM, the trading opens up. Wouldn’t be surprised in the least to find us active there as well.

April 4th, The 2022 Miami Dolphins will get to work in practice as we will be among the teams with a new Head Coach, so we will begin offseason workouts. April 20th is the deadline for meetings between NFL teams and NFL Draft prospects. April 22nd is the date is the deadline for Restricted Free Agents (RFA’s) to sign their offer sheets. The 2022 NFL Draft is April 28-30. We can’t go into the draft desperate for help at any one position. If we handle our business properly in Free Agency, we just be adding talent to the roster, not relying on any one draft pick to be a star immediately at any given position. I’ve discussed the O-line so many times so I won’t repeat that, but WR and RB might be places where we upgrade. Despite the fact that DeVante Parker carries a reasonable salary, do we really want to count on him? I for one hope we don’t, and if we’re looking to replace him, former Chargers WR Mike Williams would be a nice target. He’s not as much of a 50/50 ball guy as Parker but he’s much more explosive, and reliable as far as staying healthy. We know we need weapons for Tua, and Williams would be a nice player. Chris Godwin is another big receiver, not quite as big as Williams who is 6’4 220, but at 6’1 he plays big. We need to sign a RB, as we are bereft at the moment on our roster. Myles Gaskin and Gerrid Doaks are the 2 rostered RB’s. Former Dolphins Duke Johnson and Phillip Linday are available, and some other interesting choices as well, like former 49er and Bills RB Matt Breida, who gushed about McD, and Rashaad Penny who had somewhat of a breakout season for Seattle and who just turned 26. We know we’re probably going to have a committee approach at RB so we’ll need solid depth. Hope we solve this puzzle well!!

Way to lay it out and lay it out well Mike E.

I’m all for keeping Parker at his price though. Like $5 mil, but then have said the same many years before. Just cheap for a guy with his talent. Would still need at least one more quality wideout, but maybe just one if the system stays the same as in San Fran.

While not speaking about Gesicki or anyone in particular, Embree said blocking is “important” for tight ends in this system. “Our system is based off of outside zone, so get on the edge, get the corner so to speak. It starts with the tight end. [Tight end blocking] is an integral part of our offense.”

    From new TE coach.

Doesn’t look too good for our big long striding Slot WR.
    ——————
But maybe they decide a long-striding slot would work in a slightly altered system. He’s still going to block better than a wideout and not like we played him much as an inline TE before.

Good topic Mike! I am so impatient and want to see some resigning’s now before the “tampering” period begins. Being an addictive mock drafter, I can’t wait until we make our FA roster additions so I can’t narrow down my mocks.

Also, RB Raheem Mostert is rumored. If he is healthy.

Ken – regarding Trump, I’ve been told you have to listen to the whole interview, that the sound bites are being used out of context. I haven’t listened so I don’t know. As far as NATO and Trump, he was right in respect to some member states were not meeting their obligations; rather they were depending on the US to shoulder the load. The head of Germany’s military just came out and said they were a shell, pretty much unable to provide anything of use to NATO.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If I was a German would point out that my country is the main one keeping the EU together from the financial end. There is more than one way to contribute to a mutual alliance.

No it’s not and the EU is not the same as NATO.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Whenever a country like Portugal or Greece gets in financial trouble it is German money they are looking for to get them out of crisis. And no they are not exactly the same, but pretty darn close.

There is a lot more to Trump’s love affair with Putin than that one quote that is just most recent example of it. Again it doesn’t really matter. This invasion was going to happen no matter who or what party held the Presidency

Nice article Mike E. I kind of feel the same about Gisecki. I really like him but not sure if he fits this system. I would like to keep him but ultimately I wouldn’t be broken up about it if we lose him to some team that is willing to give him a huge payday

Said they were not really designed to assist in foreign war though they did have some capability.

I’ll just repeat what I want this offseason:

    Extend Ogbah
    Extend Smythe
2 veteran O-line via FA or trade
Grab Dalton Schultz or re-sign Gesicki
    Re-sign Mack Hollins
    Extend Needham
Re-sign Duke and Lindsay – Draft a young RB, possibly bring back Breida
Jake Scott statue outside of the stadium
Veteran WR who can stay on the field
    Draft 1 or 2 WR
Stud LB via FA or draft

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yep, I like the idea of Schultz, Smythe and Long. Though, we might not even go the route of Gesicki or Schultz.

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

There are some other more economical options out there that I’d be fine with if we don’t have either one of those guys. However, I’d rather have a top 5 guy at the position and I believe we already have one in Gesicki.

  16. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Phelon, then there is this from PFT and Florio:

Will Dolphins make another run at Deshaun Watson?
Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2022, 11:53 AM EST

Despite the clumsy post-Flores reports that the team’s now-former head coach was the person who wanted Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson and that no one else in the organization did, the truth was and is that the desire for Deshaun came from the top of the franchise. As one source who spoke with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross in the time preceding the expiration of the 2021 trading period tells PFT, Ross definitely wanted Watson.

So now, as the window for trades prepares to open, the question becomes whether the Dolphins will try again to get Watson.

The team recently has adopted a pro-Tua vibe. But that seemed to arise from a desire to pin recent dysfunction on Brian Flores. So how long will it last?

The problem the Dolphins face, as a practical matter, is that Ross wanted all 22 civil cases to be resolved before a deal was done. For some reason, Ross was willing to trade for Watson despite an unresolved criminal investigation. If/when the criminal investigation ends with no felony charges, would that be good enough for Ross?

The current Tua-love notwithstanding, Ross wants a short-list franchise quarterback. Tagovailoa isn’t on that short list. Whether the Dolphins give him another year to try to get their remains to be seen. Ultimately, it may hinge on whether a better option becomes available.

Watson will soon become available, again. Ross wanted him last year. Will Ross want Watson again?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Florio blows. He’s been throwing shit at the Dolphins for far too long, and what bothers me more than that is how Joe Rose and Zack Krantz on WQAM in Miami eat that shit up weekly. They love him and his anti-Tua campaign. They could make Tua the owner of the Dolphins and Florio would still be screaming from the rooftops that the Dolphins owner wants someone other than Tua at QB!

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Florio is just trying to stir up shit

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

He really is annoying. He basically infers, or outright states that anything the Dolphins say about supporting Tua, and not wanting Watson is a lie. He believes he is right and he will beat you over the head with it until you understand. I think he is one of those “smartest guys in the room” guys.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hillary is old news. She wasn’t embraced by her own party, let alone the other. She’s old news like I hope Trump is old news too. We have to be able to do better than another Trump/Biden square off for President. Nothing could be sadder if that’s how it ends up.

Seriously, we have a president and administration that is totally compromised by Putin/Xi.”

Then: “I’m not necessarily trying to enter the fray of political engagement, “

    Wow, lol.
    —————–
Brother, I’m going to be very civil: Biden is compromised by Ukraine, Russia, and China to the tune of $BILLION$. They are the major players in the theater thus far and this could have been delayed, if not potentially averted. These are the FACTS, not “politics”, as in Rep vs Dem or Con vs Lib.

We should and can unite as Americans… but I/we should want no part of a compromised president in Biden, who is serving at the leisure of Ukrainian, Russian, and Chinese interests.

So long as Biden doesn’t sanction Putin personally and stymies Russia’s ability through SWIFT, he can’t be taken seriously. The sanctions have no teeth and Putin is laughing at the US and the world.

It’s not about just the US (UK made a great point earlier), but somebody needs to take the bull by the horns to end Putin’s aggressions. Putin did this to Crimea in 2014, and now again in 2022 to Ukraine. We very well know his ambitions to reunite the old Empire.

The world needs a Winston Churchill, not a Neville Chamberlain. And again, Biden is COMPOMISED! It’s not that he’s a liberal or a democrat (again, I’m not trying to make this about American politics), he’s COMPROMISED! The entire world has the receipts, but curiously nothing happens. Know what I’m sayin’?

    I respect ya, Bookman.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

GRAND question! I’m not sure myself, being that’s above my pay grade. However, what instantly comes to mind is PEACE through STRENGTH… but we don’t have that at the moment… it’s past that point with Trump gone.

We could come up with a coalition of willing countries to defend (fight beside) the Ukrainian people against Putin’s forces, but that could actually steer the conflict closer to WWIII with China seemingly having Putin’s back… might not be a great idea.

Diplomacy must continue (instead of Biden saying that he will no longer talk to Putin) and hopefully, a breakthrough occurs.

I’m an optimist, Naples, yet, this issue is so very, very complicated with many moving parts. Seems to me this comes down to ENERGY and the dominance thereof. If we can get to the table, we need to start THERE with negotiations.

Between Russia’s pipelines to Europe (Nordsteam II has now been denied by Germany), Burisma in Ukraine, and the shutting down of our own pipelines, energy dependence vs energy independence seems to be a common denominator to me. That, coupled with The Paris Accords and the “Green New Deal”, I think we’re looking at a war over ENERGY.

JMO, as always. I just don’t know how to satiate Putin’s desire to reclaim the old Empire.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I don’t know how to stop Putin either in Ukraine at least. Seems the American people distinctly did not want our troops to do it. Not sure why should put on Biden how to do it absent that. Sure they could have gone after Putin personally and taken Russia off of Swift, but might not have been agreement from all the NATO countries about that. A united front is best. Plus in the cyber age Putin would have quickly found away around those two.

  25. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think it has more to do with Trump’s unpredictability and the fact he would probably take action even if it were outside of what NATO wanted to do. Biden is more predictable and Putin went through this with him before when he was VP and Putin took Crimea. Putin, knowing he has the energy of eastern Europe under his thumb, knew Biden would go with whatever NATO wanted to because they would face the most hardship. Trump would have done what Trump wanted to do within his power.

      My guess.

    From SI:

DOLPHINS OPTIONS FOR INTERIOR OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
Along the offensive line, it’s easy to connect the Dolphins to one of the top Boston College prospects, either Zion Johnson or Alec Lindstrom, considering the new assistant for that position Matt Applebaum coached both of them in college.

“Yeah, both those guys would be good fits,” Jeremiah said. “I like Zion a little bit better as a player. He would be a good fit there.”

Jeremiah then provided two more interior offensive line prospects who would be a good fit for the Dolphins, Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Cole Strange and Kentucky’s Luke Fortner.

“You know, Cole Strange is somebody that I think all those outside zone teams are gonna love,” Jeremiah said. “He just he can really move. He started 44 games. Only one of them was at center but then he goes to the Senior Bowl, played center all week and was really, really competitive. And if you look at the Dolphins coach (Mike McDaniel) and how smart he is and his reputation and then you look at a guy like Cole Strange, who was looking at the service academies and was an engineering major and is really, really a brilliant guy, I think that’s an interesting fit.

“And Luke Fortner, Zion Johnson, all those guys are intelligent. Luke Fortner is going to have two master’s degrees. So you’ve got guys that can move and guys that are really, really smart. And if you kind of look at what the Niners have tried to do, they’ve really tried to zone in on those two things. Get guys with really good smarts, particularly football intelligence and guys that are really athletic and can move, so those would be (guys) I think would be really, really good fits in that scheme.”

  52. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The rest of the article from SI:

AN INTERESTING DOLPHINS OPTION AT WIDE RECEIVER
The Dolphins selected a wide receiver with their top pick with Alabama’s Jaylen Waddle last year and it’s certainly possible they could go that route again.

And it’s also possible they could go back to Alabama as well because Jeremiah says that maybe Jameson Williams is a better fit for what the Dolphins want to do offensively (based on the 49ers scheme) than maybe a bigger wide receiver.

“I think one of the things with this offense that’s coming in they usually like those guys to be interchangeable,” Jeremiah said. “So, yeah, we talk all the time about basketball team, right? But a lot of times when you’re talking to guys that are in this McVay, Shanahan system, they talk about having guys that can play all three positions, they’re interchangeable. So they don’t really have that same philosophy in terms of like building a basketball team.

“So if I’m looking at them, and golly, let’s see what number they pick, 29, Jameson Williams, if they want to take a take a flyer on that if you you get him in there. You know what he can do with a slant. I mean Tua, the best thing he does RPO-slant people to death. That’s where he’s in his comfort zone. And you get a chance to get somebody like that, you’ve got him and Waddle, you miss a tackle, it’s over. So I would love to see them just continue to add those type of guys instead of saying, oh, you need to get the bigger, more physical player. I would try and build a track team, a run-after-catch team with Tua because his best thing he does, survey the field, get the ball out quick, accurately underneath, intermediate and then it’s up to them to do something with it.”

Think Ken was joking, but if Biden runs again many millions will vote for him even if he loses. I dislike Trump a lot, but understand why some do vote for him.
    ————————
I agree and see why people vote both ways. Like MikeE said, I don’t know what I will do if it comes down to those 2 again. If that happens, there would be no better time in American history to have a strong 3rd party candidate.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

It’s really easy. Which America was doing better under which guy? It should never be about their personality or other minor issues. Based on easily seen results, Biden is worse than Carter who was a top 5 worst president in US history. Trump said mean things and is a narcissist. One thing is definitely not equal to the other.

If Republicans can find a better candidate than Trump? Awesome! If they can’t? Then vote Trump and hold your nose as our economy, borders, jobs, and foreign policy become the focus over whatever the hell Biden thinks he’s doing. I can’t understand voting for Biden after the results of the past year. It’s like shooting your arm off and wondering why you feel bad and weak suddenly.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Easy for you but not for some. Was sorta of my point. And I’m a life-long Republican who did not vote for Trump. Both because of his personal actions/statements and because he turned the GOP from what Regan created to populist. GOP didn’t even put out a policy platform for the last election.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Populist is exactly what Republicans should be. They should want the blue-collar workers who built America. Trump was running on the same policies as 2016 which were easy to look up and he was willing to talk about it all the time.

What policies has Biden kept? How is America under Biden? What has he accomplished for the non-wealthy? My original question was which president had(s) a better working America? The answer is extremely easy and obvious if the person doesn’t have blind, naked partisanship. The goal is a better America, not a more politically acceptable version to run out to other countries. America should always be first. Not the other way around.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Like I said it is just not easy and obvious to me. And I am the one who felt strongly enough against the presidential candidate of my own party, even if still voted GOP otherwise. Am not a Biden fan either.

Am also not a fan of populism, especially when it appeals to baser instincts like xenophobia, isolationism and the cult of personality. I see mob rule and a less than united America in that. Think Trunpo managed all those quite well to the detriment of both the GOP and the country as a whole.

And given what I have said not sure how I have “have blind, naked partisanship”. Like I said the lion’s share of my votes have and do go GOP.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m not saying you do or that you’re wrong about Trump. It was a generic statement based off points upcoming. Let’s just look at the basics. Highest inflation in over 40 years and it’s getting higher. Trump or Biden? Major grocers having empty sections for the first time in my father’s entire life (he’s 68)? Biden or Trump. Gross overall employment at peak for either president. Higher for Trump or Biden? Worse overall economy. Trump or Biden? Neither beat Covid. We’ll see if Biden keeps us out of war, but Trump did. Who is worse for the common American? It seems pretty obvious unless you’ve (generic form) made a fortune off Covid stocks and want Biden to continue the mask and vaccine ridiculousness.

The hypocrisy of Biden’s stances is mind-blowing. Ukrainian borders must be honored. Ours? Not so much. Oil bad and so is energy independence. Paying for Russian oil? Good! Trump would be a foreign policy disaster. Nope, Biden was the foreign policy disaster. He’s an utter failure at everything. How is that better by any metric?

Populists suffer from what all democracies suffer. All types of citizen rule suffer from a lot of the same things. Possible mob rule and cult of personality. It’s an inherent risk. It’s exactly why Reagan is still the voice of Republicanism 30 years after his death. He was an amazing man but was there a cult of personality? Of course, there was and is. I see charlatans using Reagan today to shame people for thinking for themselves. “What would Reagan say?!!” Who cares today? It’s a different America and he’d be appalled at Tranny Reading Day in libraries in CA. In the narcissism of our youth today. In the massive growth of our government and the pull corporations hold in our government.

Putting Americans first can be labeled xenophobia but still have the support of Latino Americans, African Americans, etc. In a country like the US, the xenophobia argument is weak as hell. No one else is as diverse but Americans must come first. Isolationism is also a label that has no meaning. When most of our medicines are from China, we have a problem. When Russia supplies lots of our oil, we have a problem as seen today. Independence is not a bad thing, and we should never think putting America first is bad.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Although I don’t agree with all those points, they are ones which could lead you to favor Trump. And some was not in favor of, like the trade wars. But said off the bat respect why some people do support Trump.

For me it is about matter of trust and I simply don’t trust the guy who said :3-5 million illegal aliens voted in the 2016 election, that anything he doesn’t like is Fake News even when it often is provably not and who tried to overthrow the certified results of the last election, etc. Offends me that he seems to think I and the American people are so simple.

That lack of trust means have not voted for him and will not.

Dolphins to ‘tailor’ offense around QB Tua Tagovailoa’s strengths

The No. 1 question for the Miami Dolphins’ new coaching staff revolves around the development of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

The commitment to the former No. 5 overall pick extends to molding the entire offense around what best suits Tua, according to new quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Darrell Bevell.

“The first thing is to get him ingrained in the system,” Bevell said Wednesday, via the Miami Herald. “Once we are able to do that, then I think the system is going to be built and tailored to him, and… bring out all the positives in his game.”

Bevell, who has worked with Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford and Trevor Lawrence in the past decade, noted that, unlike other positions, it’s vital to construct the offense around what the quarterback does best, or the entire operation never gets off the ground.

    Top Videos

“(It’s important) to tailor the game to them, to their talent, rather than fitting the round peg in the square hole,” he said. “We can tailor the offense to bring out the strengths of each guy.”

Tagovailoa’s strength is his accuracy, particularly in close quarters, and his ability to quickly get the ball out. There were plenty of times that Tua’s quick reads and release saved a sack or worse.

“I think he’s a really accurate passer,” Bevell said. “That’s the thing that jumped out at me right away is looking at him. I haven’t done like a complete deep dive yet. But I’ve looked at enough tape that I like the accuracy that he has. I like his ability to make some off-schedule plays. He can get outside the pocket. He’s not going to be a major runner, but he can run and make plays with his feet. I really like those kinds of things.”

The negative to Tua’s game is the lack of arm strength that could hold back the offense, particularly down the field and deep outside the numbers, where he didn’t target much in 2021. Bevell said he wouldn’t judge whether Tagovailoa had limited arm strength before working with him in person.

“I think it’s important for me to be able to see the ball coming out of his hand in person,” he said. “I can see it on tape. I can see him making some of the throws. There are questions that I have. But I want to see the ball come out of his hand in person. That’s the one thing for me, always on tape, is it’s hard to tell the true velocity, so I want to get him out here on the grass and see exactly what it looks like. From what I’ve seen we’ll definitely be able to have high success from him being able to throw the football. He can make many of the throws that we’re going to ask him to do. And the ones that he can’t then we’re going to do something different.”

Rosenthal: Tua Tagovailoa’s 2021 season has been ‘really misunderstood’
Assuming the bulk of Mike McDaniel’s offense relies on the Kyle Shanahan scheme, it should fit with what Tua does well, namely getting the ball to players in space and working defenses over the middle. In addition, the Dolphins’ RPO game should be better in 2022 in the new system.

To help the quarterback, the Dolphins must upgrade the run game and offensive line after both struggled in 2021.

“Any time you run the football, that’s a quarterback’s best friend,” Bevell said. “It opens up so much when you turn around and hand the ball to the quarterback it takes a lot of pressure off of you. But then it affects the defense in a positive way when you can play-fake them and distort the defense.”

Everything we’ve heard this offseason from the new staff suggests Tua will get every chance to show he’s the franchise quarterback. If he struggles in 2022, it’ll be back to the drawing board in South Beach.

He’s probably not gonna ever be an all pro, but he could be a solid, plug and play guard for the next 10 years. They both are nice fits in zone schemes, and they shouldn’t be really expensive. Or maybe they will be because everybody gets insane money in FA these days.

If we can get him on the relative cheap (due to his penchant for penalties), I’d pull the trigger with the hopes that our new O-Line coaching can get him back to a palatable amount of penalties.
