Dolphins 2022 – Upgrade the roster

With the 2022 coaching staff intact, the next step is upgrading the personnel that plays on the gridiron. March 1-7 is the NFL Combine in Indiana. Unlike many years past, we’re not armed with an arsenal of picks, but it doesn’t matter. Just hit on a few picks and we’ll be a better team. In reality, the same teams are pretty much in the playoffs or at least in the hunt every season, despite picking near the end of each round and not having 10-12 draft picks. It’s the quality of the picks that count. Considering how much money we have available in 2022 cap space, we’ll already have addressed some key issues before we even enter the fray of the 2022 NFL Draft. The next most relevant date is March 8th, which is the deadline for teams to apply either the Franchise Tag or Transition Tag to players. I’ve actually never been less sure on how we proceed in this regard. You all know how much I love TE Mike Gesicki but I just don’t know what Mike McDaniel thinks about Gesicki and if he’s a viable fit in his system. His talent is undeniable as a receiver, but the biggest question is not necessarily whether he can block, it’s did the previous staffs even ask him to?

The next date is key for us, because March 14-16 is when teams can contact players/agents of NFL Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA’s). There will be fierce competition for O-line players as most every team has O-line issues. We’ll have to pay dearly to get who we want, but really, who cares? Just get them! Not my money, not my problem. This is why you get yourself in the position of having among the highest cap space, so you have the freedom to spend it. Let’s face it, we need at least 1 or 2 guys that will step in immediately and upgrade our offensive line. Draft picks, even the best of them have a break in period. We can’t afford that. This team has started slow each of the last 3 seasons and because of that, we were on the outside looking in during the playoffs. We need to come out of the gate quick, and 2 veteran anchors on the O-line would make that more likely. On March 16th, Free Agency begins and the cash will be flowing. Spend it well Miami! Also on March 1th, after 4PM, the trading opens up. Wouldn’t be surprised in the least to find us active there as well.

April 4th, The 2022 Miami Dolphins will get to work in practice as we will be among the teams with a new Head Coach, so we will begin offseason workouts. April 20th is the deadline for meetings between NFL teams and NFL Draft prospects. April 22nd is the date is the deadline for Restricted Free Agents (RFA’s) to sign their offer sheets. The 2022 NFL Draft is April 28-30. We can’t go into the draft desperate for help at any one position. If we handle our business properly in Free Agency, we just be adding talent to the roster, not relying on any one draft pick to be a star immediately at any given position. I’ve discussed the O-line so many times so I won’t repeat that, but WR and RB might be places where we upgrade. Despite the fact that DeVante Parker carries a reasonable salary, do we really want to count on him? I for one hope we don’t, and if we’re looking to replace him, former Chargers WR Mike Williams would be a nice target. He’s not as much of a 50/50 ball guy as Parker but he’s much more explosive, and reliable as far as staying healthy. We know we need weapons for Tua, and Williams would be a nice player. Chris Godwin is another big receiver, not quite as big as Williams who is 6’4 220, but at 6’1 he plays big. We need to sign a RB, as we are bereft at the moment on our roster. Myles Gaskin and Gerrid Doaks are the 2 rostered RB’s. Former Dolphins Duke Johnson and Phillip Linday are available, and some other interesting choices as well, like former 49er and Bills RB Matt Breida, who gushed about McD, and Rashaad Penny who had somewhat of a breakout season for Seattle and who just turned 26. We know we’re probably going to have a committee approach at RB so we’ll need solid depth. Hope we solve this puzzle well!!

Naples, you gave me flashbacks to my youth this morning. I, kind of, grew up in that same area. Even though we lived in North Charleston, we had a beach house on Folly Island on the Folly River. We stayed there probably 50% of the time. We fished and shrimped the heck out of those marsh creeks. After my father retired, he was going to buy a 50 acre plot on Johns Island right on the Stono River back in 1976 and live out his days there. Instead, he bought a small farm back home in Indiana. I hated it for a long time but got used to it.

He sold the beach house in 1981 one year before I joined the Navy and got stationed in Charleston. Go figure.

Folly Island is the last place I lived as a bachelor surfer with my 2nd oldest friend Fritz before we both met the girls we married a few months apart in 1976. Surf on the front beach at dawn, then go back to the marsh creeks and check the blue crab traps or seine for shrimp or gig flounder or rake oysters. Party around an oyster roast wet burlap fire back on the beach till midnight. Did that at least a hundred times. Free food. Girls would bring the blueberries and okra. Buddies brought the beer from town. Simple times.

I have all the projected times on about 20 of them. Look forward to seeing if they beat it or run slower. Many of the times were when they came to their college as freshmen and put on more weight since. Will be interesting to see who maintains that speed or even improved.

Don’t bother, we know most schools fudge those numbers, 40 times, height, weight…

Dude, we were right there north of the bridge where it got down to 3 roads. We were on the back road on East Cooper next to a manmade channel that cut into the island. I used to ride my bike a little farther north where it got down to 1 road. There were a bunch of surfers who hung out up there. We caught tons of blue crab on all those breakers.

That beach house is still there and went untouched by Hugo. Yeah, wish my dad had held onto it and better yet, bought that 50 acres on the Stono River.

    Good times for sure!

President Biden said it is ok to begin the process of removing masks in safe places. He did not say that masks do nothing. I hate wearing a mask, but I did to help protect my loved ones and others who would be sensitive to COVID.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ole Joe also said if Russia goes through Ukraine and starts invading Poland or Estonia that we’re deploying troops. So in other words, we stand with Ukraine, we’ll show the Ambassador from Ukraine and put on these little flags on our jackets but our troops don’t get started until Ukraine is overrun and they move into Nato territory

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The American people overwhelmingly don’t want US troops in Ukraine. Both parties agree, or maybe for once the people that vote for them do.

Rock – is it difficult for you to understand that they used this invasion as a prop to get everyone behind him and pull at the heartstrings, but basically Ukraine, good luck, you’re on your own? How many shots of people wearing Ukrainian flags and the Ambassador?

or is it your dislike for the crypt-keeper that has you so salty? FWIW I can’t stand ol’ Joe either, but I understand that it is not the US’s responsibility to be the world police.

President Biden is warning Stupid Putin about the NATO contract.
We can’t send troops into the other side of Ukraine to meet the invaders in the middle without starting WW3 or at least getting another Korea / Nam stalemate.
Then we would be invaders also.
      It’s an ugly mess.
I think the fact that nearly everyone in the world is against Putin will blunt his unprovoked attack and hopefully end his unlimited power if not his regime.

Introduced the Ambassador, numerous camera shots of her, Dems wearing Ukranian flags but then he explains how if/when Russia overruns Ukraine, we’ll take care of business. We get it already, he’s going to have a run based O, everyone will be blocking, Boyer will have the D for now

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. I love that they have a vision for Tua and will give him every opportunity to succeed. I think I know what that will look like, but we’ll see.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Half the battle with the OL is getting everyone to buy in to blocking

You have 5 OL, how the F are they supposed to block 7 or 8 in the box without getting some help from the skill players?

McD should be able to improve the run game just by getting everyone on the same page of blocking

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Watch this reel. No passes are 60+ yards through the air. Most of them are in the 40 range. Even Dan Marino said 65 is my limit and that’s all out.

It’s about instincts, savvy and accuracy which Tua has. He’s just getting started.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It never was about throwing it 65 yards, it’s about how quick you can get it to your target once you’ve committed to throwing it there

Quick release, that Tua has, plays into it, so that helps, his problem is throwing on a line with guys in his face, he counters that with pocket presence

Everything is give and take, one guy has a big arm, but no pocket presence or accuracy, so Jeff George isn’t consistent

Allen has escapability, and big arm, but not te most accurate, improving though

Mahomes seems to have it all, but you still need a team around you

If the stars line up like they did for Brady last year Tua can win an SB, he won’t be the guy, that you can’t win with

Coach McD is a humble dude who seems to be a people person. All the fun and sarcasm is cool, but when it comes to football, I view him like an engineer. He sees how a structure works. Do this and we make plays and win.

You can’t win in the NFL without an offense that can make plays.

MF13, Steve and Rock are adults, they can handle their disagreements. It’s not your place to insert yourself into their, or anyone else’s disagreements on here. Not your argument, leave it alone. You are prolonging it by bringing it up hours/days/weeks later. If Steve or Rock feel like they need anything addressed they can say it themselves without you putting yourself into it. We don’t like having to police this place but that doesn’t mean we’re outsourcing that role to you.
    —————
Excuse me, one of the two quotes WERE directed at ME: thus it IS my argument.

What’s more, I didn’t go running to the admins 5 days ago when it happened like a little baby. But when the punk went after Steve yesterday, it made me want to point out a recurring attacker who may be keeping others from posting here. I don’t take what Rockphin says seriously (he’s a punk), but what’s good for the goose should be good for the gander, no?

Please disregard everything you just stated above: it’s bunk, baseless, and an intentional shot at me. I didn’t insert myself, I WAS targeted, myself! How can anybody gloss over that fact? WOW!

Outsource what bloody role to me… running to the admins every single time somebody says something mean to somebody else, or even myself? Seems that role has been FILLED for some time, and I’m certainly not applying for it… know what I’m sayin’?

Snarky disrespect is not the way to roll, seriously. It’s bad enough trying to deal with a snarky 12-year old with special needs. I deal with it every day and it’s extremely recognizable to me.

Now I’m going to be very respectful, so don’t gloss over as much again: I seriously appreciate this place (that’s why I still come here) and I think y’all have done an extremely good job… KUDOS!

Now, my point has been made and it’s off my chest… and I’m going to let it go… that simple. We needn’t talk about this issue again unless somebody else chooses to bring it up. Misunderstandings happen, I know… it’s water under the bridge to me now.

You might want to give Chris Grier some props to say hey… we have something here in Tua. Let’s find the HC who will help him reach his potential.

I think we now know Flores was about more than team, he joined the race war. That made me sad. He was at the top of the goal in Miami and shit on it. I lost a lot of respect for him.

    Round 1 Pick 22: Nakobe Dean, ILB/OLB, Georgia (A)
Round 2 Pick 18: John Metchie, WR, Alabama (A)
Round 3 Pick 36 (COMP): Zonovan Knight, RB, N.C. State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 16: Jalen Tolbert, WR, South Alabama (A+)
Round 4 Pick 20: Matt Waletzko, OT, North Dakota (A+)
    Round 5 Pick 15: Josh Paschal, DE/OLB, Kentucky (A+)
Round 6 Pick 20: Sevyn Banks, CB, Ohio State (A+)
    Round 7 Pick 3: Jeremiah Hall, FB/RB, Oklahoma (A+)

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

WOW! Tolbert in the 4th!?!? He is taken by the end of the 2nd in most of the mocks I have been doing. Love the FB pick!

I saw some hesitance by some others on here about Dean because of one evaluator’s listed weaknesses, but then I went to other sites and they listed his weaknesses as strengths so who’s evaluation do you listen to?

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I haven’t done much research this year as far as looking up evaluations.

Mostly going off what I watched during the actual games.

I’m ok with WR Jameson Williams, but his NFL comparison is Will Fuller, and he’s already hurt.
    yikes
To me the one I would prefer is Jahan Dotson out of Penn State.
“Dotson is a smooth, explosive wideout who effortlessly eats up ground as a runner, and his combination of speed, route running and reliable hands will likely result in a first-round selection. He has been routinely timed in the mid-to-low 4.3s during training, and I would expect him to post a time in that range Thursday night.”
I think one of them will still be there at 29, and I’d be ok with taking either because we really need speed outside. I don’t want a slow WR just to draft a guy.
Probably, Treylon Burks is the best WR in this class, but I don’t think he lasts to 29.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Funny, I saw that comparison and cringed immediately. It doesn’t really mean much though. Fuller is a dick, I don’t think Jameson is.

  74. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m concerned that Nakobe Dean is too small for a LB at only 6′ 225.
    His weight is maxed out.
He’s more the size of a jacked up Safety.
We already have a fast but too-light LB in #55, so we need a Big Badass type LB enforcer.
    That’s why I like Damone Clark LSU 6’2 240.

Dean concerns me because of this:
    Weaknesses

Built like a stocky back, lacking ideal size and length.
Instincts and play diagnosis are just average.
    Triggers on an incomplete read.
Tardy response allows climbing blocks a chance.
Can be swallowed up when lingering on second level.
Traffic seems to find him in lateral pursuit.
Average stopping power and length as open-field tackler.
    Inconsistent to body-up and finish.

    Is this from NFL Network?

    From Harris at the Draft network;
Tackling: He has very good tackling ability. He rarely misses tackles in space or in confined areas. He is well known for his uncanny ability to always be around the football.
Football IQ: He has high-level football IQ. His instincts help him to play fast and quickly diagnose run/pass. He also is clever within the box, understanding how to defeat linemen.
Pass Coverage: He provides good value in the passing game. His instincts allow him to get in the passing lanes to secure off-target throws in the short-to-intermediate areas. He is adequate in man coverage but instinctive enough to get enough depth and allow the ball to bring him forward.
Run Defender: He is a downhill player who quickly deciphers run plays. He defends the run well and is among the leading tacklers in the nation. His tackling efficiency is good and he rarely misses tackles in the box.

    From Bleacher Report
Rare knack for finding work while sifting through chaos.
Above-average tackler. Has the speed, strength and body control to consistently wrap up and run through tackles.
Very good man coverage ability against RBs thanks to his eyes and speed.

    From NFL Draft Buzz
Good tackler who usually wraps up and hits surprising hard for a smaller LB
Speed allows him to be able to track sideline to sideline – has a great radar – knows where runners are going to break before they do
When tasked with man coverage responsibilities, he stays square and patient and very smart
Good at diagnosing where the play is going has good speed to get to ball carriers quickly and is a reliable tackler

Mike, I travel all over the country for work and am always in a rush to return the rental car and get to my flight. I didn’t know it was the law in NJ that you can’t pump your own gas. I think there is only one other state that doesn’t allow it. (Oregon?) I stopped to top off the rental before returning it, there was no one around so I got out and started pumping. Then this homeless looking guy comes running full speed at me yelling Hey HEY YOU CAN’T DO THAT!! And ran up an pushed me against the car. (Physically shoved me). I thought I was being attacked so I threw his ass to the ground and go in my stance to defend myself. Then someone else came running out of the store to intervene calmed the situation down and explained to me that in NJ you can’t pump your own gas.
I was amazed because I had never heard such a thing. I tried to apologize to the guy who I threw to the ground and he just mumbled yeah whatever and walked back around the building. When I got on my flight I told the story to the guy next to me who was also from Florida and he said he had almost the same thing happen to him the first time. Bizarre local rules.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, it’s a terrible rule. How dumb do they think we are? So many people from NJ are from NY, which allows you to pump your own gas, so I’m guessing it’s the native New Jerseyians they think are dumb. lol

Seems Flores’ lawsuit gives NFL owners another reason not to hire a minority HC

Why risk losing your franchise, because a minority HC might one day think the cause is more important than his direct team compensation?

  88. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I won’t be disappointed if we drafted Nakobe Dean. My only knock on him is he has a hard time getting off blocks at his size. Also, he benefitted having the best DT tandem in all of college football in front of him and a ton of other talent in than front 7 as well. Those DT’s are in the top five this draft and one is DT1.

My top ILB outside of Dean are (ILB only as that is our need):
    Leo Chenal
    Christian Harris
    Damone Clark
    Chad Muma
    Channing Tindal

LB’s I like who have versatility:
    Nakobe Dean
    Brandon Smith
Darian Beavers (ILB or Edge rusher)

Don’t know why everyone is so high on Devin Lloyd. He is projected to run a 4.70 as an OLB. If that holds true at the combine, I will pass. I hear he is football smart. Maybe he would be best at ILB in the NFL.

Think about how they treated Tua, because Herbert and Burrow were further along, now compare that with how they treated the QB class of 2021

Haven’t heard any talk of replacing the jags, jets, sf, bears QBs

Logically speaking they should all be compared to Herbert and Burrow too

So why does Tua get such a bad rap? Ross? Miami in general?

    107. Tyler Smith OT Tulsa
    120. Cole Strange OG Chattanooga
    124. John Ridgeway DT Arkansas
    171. Markquese Bell S Florida A&M
    198. Skylar Thompson QB Kansas State
    199. Zander Horvath FB Purdue

That is another reason I like Fanspeak’s Mock draft. They allow you to pick from 6-8 different draft boards from different sources. They also allow you to pick whether everyone uses the same big board or if they use random big boards from the other sources. (which mixes up stale mocks)
