NFL Combine hits full throttle – Free Agency Coming Soon!

8 WR’s in this 2022 NFL Draft ran official times under 4.4 seconds. Everyone’s getting excited here because we know we need to add talent at the WR position, but I caution, NFL Free Agency precedes the NFL Draft so we have to see how we upgrade our team via Free Agency. We can go crazy over certain guys at various positions, all positions of need for our team like WR, OL, LB, RB and not necessarily in that order, but how we add to the roster in Free Agency will determine how we draft, and what positions will be a priority.

This Miami Dolphins fanbase has gone crazy the last few years because we’ve had so many high picks at our disposal (with mixed results). The top of last year’s draft appears to have been a slam dunk. Jaylen Waddle is the explosive WR we needed and he caught a high volume of passes last season. Jaelan Phillips really came on as the season progressed as a pass rusher. Jevon Holland was an absolute bright spot in the secondary as a safety and showed he is a playmaker. The next 4 picks are a work in progress although I do believe Liam Eichenberg will be one of our starting OT’s, most likely RT. TE Hunter Long had a rough year and didn’t make it easy for the Dolphins to move on from now free agent TE Mike Gesicki. OT Larnel Coleman got a shot game 17 and lasted only 1 half before coming out with an injury and RB Gerrid Doaks spent the season on the PS.

In 2020, armed with three 1st round picks, two 2nd round picks, the Dolphins got only fair results for such a potential haul. QB Tua Tagovailoa was our first pick at #5, followed by young OT Austin Jackson at #18, and then DB Noah Igbinoghene at #30 who’s been invisible in 2 seasons. I’m higher than a lot of folks on Tua, and definitely higher than almost everyone on Austin Jackson. I’m almost willing to say with certainty that Austin Jackson will be our starting LT in 2022. If we address the O-line properly, and give Tua a running game and another weapon at WR/TE, easily done BTW, I think we’ll see a big leap in year 3 for Tua, maybe similarly to what the Bills saw with Josh Allen. Bringing in former Dolphins standout DB’s Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain is a welcome sight, and should be especially good for Noah Igbinoghene. Iggy is signed through 2023 and has a 5th year option for 2024 so he can potentially be under Dolphins control for another 3 seasons. It would be wonderful to get this kid right as he does have lots of talent. Pick #39 OL Robert Hunt has been a promising player on the O-line and looks to be perennial starter. DT Raekwon Davis (Pick #56) had a tough start being injured early but had a decent season and his size and athleticism is a plus. Safety Brandon Jones (Pick #70) had a breakout season and solidified his standing in the secondary. He was impressive doing all the things MFFF was supposed to do, blitzing the QB, playing up at the LOS making tackles. Jones had 5 sacks, 10 QB hits and 79 tackles last season 6 tackles for a loss. This does put fellow safety Eric Rowe’s future here in peril. The lone Dolphins left from this draft is OG Solomon Kindley who both Randy and I don’t believe is finished here either. He was a mauler in the run game in 2020 but was replaced by Liam Eichenberg at LG and eventually Austin Jackson when he was moved inside and Eichenberg to LT. He should be part of the rotation on the O-line because he’s a mover. If he can get himself in better shape, come in a little lighter and quicker, he could be that.

So as we watch the NFL Combine and drool over players, don’t fall in love my friends, because who we get in FA will give us an idea, and only an idea of which way we go in the draft. Odds are we will be filling our roster with a WR, OL, RB, LB in the draft regardless, but the key is what will be the priority and in what order will be looking for those players. Not to bore the heck out of you but I feel we must address the O-line with a minimum of one veteran that we can just put in a spot and consider that spot is taken care of. I said weeks ago, before we even hired former 49ers coach Mike McDaniel as our HC that OG Laken Tomlinson would be a good choice. Now with McD here it makes it even more likely. I know we like C Tyler Linderbaum, the top rated interior OL in this draft, but if we pick up say Ted Karras and Laken Tomlinson in free agency, it makes it less likely we’re going to spend pick #29 or even our next pick on the O-line. If we sign WR Mike Williams or some other starting quality WR then we’re not drafting WR Jameson Williams or any other WR with our top pick. You get the drift, be patient Dolphins fans, we’ll have a better picture on our draft approach once we complete free agency and get our roster remade. In any case, enjoy the combine, it’s always fun to picture certain players in a Dolphins uniform although we all know here most of them never materialize no matter how much we want them and project them here.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So if Gesicki being tagged means he’s on the team and part of the plan, I think Braxton Berrios should be the target. Waddle and Berrios at WR will get open and make plays all day off the run game. Then the big vertical TE strikes.

I say off the run game because I can’t see it not being better and a much more prominent part of our offense with coach McD. That’s what he built his career on. It’s the staple of his vision on offense.

  41. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
They’ve been talking about speeding up or having a faster offense around here for, oh, about a decade. Lol
    ***
I don’t think McD is gonna come in here and force feed a running game. I think he’s stated pretty clearly that he sees his job as using his players to the best of their abilities and figuring out how to maximize their talents. We’ll see what he does, but I’m hoping he isn’t locked in on anything. Fans always think running the ball sounds great…until the team gets 2 yards on 3 runs…and then they’re screaming for the team to throw the ball. Nobody has the patience to run the ball these days.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’re going to run the ball first and pass off of it. That doesn’t mean we won’t pass on 1st or 2nd down. But we will run the football. Tua will throw on the move a lot by design. The WCO is what McDaniel was raised in. The run heavy version. I see what’s happening here. 😉

  44. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I still say as I did several days ago, that a FA haul of Berrios with a deep speed guy in the draft would be a lethal WR room.
I threw Allen Lazard 6’5 227 and a great blocker in there, but maybe he is redundant to Bowden, Parker, Hollins.

    P/K Matt Araiza
    WR Calvin Austin

    RB Zamir White

Two stud OL coming from same school to play for same OL coach. Two fast sub 4.4 WR’s both with versatility and P/K returners. A punter with a bionic leg. An Edge who is an athletic freak. Solid safety prospect and a hard running one cut RB.

If we were to resign Ogbah, Smythe and Hollins, then sign ILB Bobby Wagner, an OT (doesn’t have to be top dollar but one who is solid and a good fit) and RB Jeff Wilson or Duke Johnson, we would be looking really good.

Barno and Boldin are excellent picks that late, and we do need depth or rotation guys at both those positions, especially if McCourty goes on social security and Rowe is a cap casualty.
Lindstrom is meh to me; no need to swap an average rook for an average seasoned vet (Dieter).

I really worry about that thinking from Americans, to get to that logic, you have to have deep seeded beliefs that defy some basic logic about NATOs place in helping to keep us safe since ww2.

    Wyo about Metcalf
If we could get him for a year on his rookie contract ($4M) …
Maybe we could just rent him for a year to save a draft pick to use somewhere else.
Or sign him to an extension at about $12 per year for 4, that would work for us and give him a 3x raise for this year and guaranteed money as he gets older.
(not a GM or a capologist here)

I’ve seen a little of Wagner recently, hmmm …
but I’d need HC to take a deep look and make sure he still has skills worth tying up cap money for as opposed to just drafting a 1st round ILB and living with rookie mistakes while enjoying rookie fresh legs and enthusiasm.
Aging LBs are good mentors but have often lost a step and some of the fire needed at that position.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I thought that also but believe he has plenty in the tank, especially for a 3 year deal where the final year has little dead money if we decide to move on after 2. Also, draft Leo Chenal for him to groom.

Wagner had 170 total tackles last year. The most of his career. He played the whole season last year and in his 10 year career, he has played an average of 15.1 games a season, fewest being 11 games. In the last 6 years, he has played a full season 5 out of 6 seasons and the one he didn’t, he only missed 1 game.

  66. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Burks’s measurables drop him out of round one IMHO. Not enough burst or core strength. Maybe his tape reveals something special, but … I’d pass, pardon the pun.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Same here, when you watch him on tape with 50/50 balls, he barely gets off the ground. He wins with his size only. Does not have any kind of speed to get separation in man coverage.

IT should have paged turned by now! I still cannot see the page from my Iphone unless I am in “Incognito Mode” which doesn’t allow you to log in or post!

I don’t see Jimmy G as a viable trade option for anyone. He is having shoulder surgery and won’t start throwing until July

I heard on NFL radio the other they don’t expect him to throw until July. Bottom line with his injury history I doubt teams will be lining up to trade for him

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think he’ll fetch a 3rd or maybe as high as a 2nd and be on another team by training camp.

This sucks, as Indy has now become a team that can afford to outbid us on several of our FA targets.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Are they targeting the same positions? They’re one of the teams that actually has a good OL so that shouldn’t be an issue.

    MF13
I’d not waste a draft pick on a QB above 7th round, as we need other positions with the early picks and those in the mid rounds are not good enough to step right in as a rookie if we need him to.
I would sign a couple in UDFA though because we need camp arms and a practice squad guy.
3 I like late or UDFA are
Brock Purdy, Skylar Thompson, and Cole Kelley (as a Crash Jensen type)
