Next Step is here – NFL Free Agency

The Dolphins have already secured TE Mike Gesicki for the 2022 NFL season as they have placed the Franchise Tag on him. They can work out a long term deal or have his services for this season and reevaluate after. With a new HC, it’s difficult to say which is more likely. Other Dolphins players I would like us to re-sign are Emmanuel Ogbah, Nik Needham and Mack Hollins, and in that order. From outside our organization, I feel the interior of the O-line is a must fix so I would prefer to get Niners LG Laken Tomlinson. As some of you know, the Cowboys are willing to trade OL La’el Collins. Collins can play inside or outside, and can play either side at tackle, and play them all well. That’s a nice commodity to have, especially with what I believe is some young talent we have that we need to find spots for such as Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. Some have already given up on these players, I think that’s foolish. Collins has been a fixture on the Cowboys line since ’15, although he did miss most of the ’16 season tearing a ligament in his big toe Game 3. He was placed on IR and missed the rest of that season. Otherwise he has been a steady presence for the Cowboys. I don’t know what compensation the Cowboys expect for Collins but I’d give up a 2nd or 3rd RD pick without any hesitation to get Collins. With so high a demand for quality O-linemen, the Cowboys just might cash in much higher for Collins. I suppose I’d consider our 1st RD pick (#29) as well. Other possible picks at #29 are C Tyler Linderbaum, WR Jameson Williams and probably a host of others that I haven’t even considered but GM Chris Grier has his eye on. Collins would start and be an upgrade just about anywhere we put him, and lord knows we need to upgrade the O-line. There are quite a few avenues to consider though, being we have a good amount of cap room and we can find 2 good free agent OL in Free Agency.

Back to re-signing our own, the Dolphins have to make Emmanuel Ogbah a priority. It’s not that Ogbah is a guy who takes over games, he’s not that type of player. He is a guy that consistently gets pressure from his side of the field and despite not having gaudy numbers in any one defensive metric, he’s had over 20 QB hits each of the 2 seasons he’s played here, and although he missed double digit sacks by one each year, with the emergence of Jaelan Phillips, I think Ogbah and Phillips could be both be perennial double digit sack guys. Ogbah’s 2 best seasons were here in Miami, so I’d hope he’d want to return to the place where he’s been most successful, although in all fairness, money will talk. We’ll have to show Ogbah some love ($$$) if we want him back. DB Nik Needham is a player I just love to watch. I remember when we drafted some guy (Noah Igbinoghene) and had such high expectations for that player. Instead, it was Nik Needham thrust into duty and call him an overachiever or whatever you want but he always proved he belonged on the field. It’s hard not to like and admire Needham and I truly hope we retain him as a player. Mack Hollins is another one of those players like Needham. We know he’s a special teams ace and that guy was always around the football on ST’s. He was also thrust into duty when others were expected to be ahead of him, but due to injuries, Hollins got more playing time than expected. He showed up and played well all the time. So often I’d see Hollins make a play and both I and the announcer thought it was TE Mike Gesicki, #86 and #88 look similar and their lithe body types are close as well. #86 has to be re-signed so the confusion can continue.

When you look at improving the team, most of us feel the O-line is the place where it needs to begin. I also feel like the majority here feel we should be adding veterans and not spending high picks on the O-line, as we all know we’ve spent quite a few in the last 2 years as it is, one 1st RD pick in 2020 (Jackson), two 2nd RD picks, 2020 (Hunt), and 2021 (Eichenberg). In 2019, we spent a 3rd RD pick on C Michael Deiter and we spent a 4th RD pick in 2020 on OG Solomon Kindley. I could see spending another 1st RD potentially on center Tyler Linderbaum. If they feel he’d be an immediate upgrade and a long term solution at center, it’s hard to argue pulling the trigger on that. We can also pick up probably the best center available in free agency Ryan Jensen formerly of Tom Brady’s Bucs. Lots of different ways to approach it, and Chris Grier is well aware of that. Tough part is there will be high interest across the board on quality offensive linemen so if we want a player, we’ll have to be very aggressive and pay whatever is necessary in order to get them. Bargain hunting is not an option.

I’m sure Grier has a clear plan as to what he’s doing, and then fallback plans when those are foiled. Even though we have deep pockets, the competition will be so high there’s likely to be a quick frenzy to start the free agency period off. Other than money, is Miami a destination where players feel like they can win? We have a bright new Head Coach in Mike McDaniel, but he’s a first time Head Coach, so is winning immediately realistic? Of course we have nice climate, especially during the colder months of the season and we also have no state income tax which makes the money go even further. I look forward to seeing what Grier and the Dolphins do when the communications between NFL teams and players (agents) begin on Monday March 14th. I have a feeling the bottom line of the NFL channel feed will be ringing like a pinball machine. Hopefully we’re doing some of the ringing!

Me too…Calvin’s imagination is the best part of the strip and the snowmen illustrate that so effortlessly. Spaceman spiff is great for that too, but a lot of those are full color and I’m not sure the text will be very readable on the blog so I haven’t gone there yet.

The problem I’m starting to encounter with the snowmen is being unsure which ones I’ve posted because there are numerous ones I’ve taken note of, and I’m starting to mix up the ones I’ve taken note of vs the ones I’ve posted, lol.

” most of us feel the O-line is the place where it needs to begin.”

Think that is the one universal thought on the board. And I fall in the group that think we need one if not two proven vets to mix in with those young guy. I’m taken with the thought that went out last night about bringing in a C and a G, which would be cheaper.

But whether that makes sense or not depends on whether they are willing to switch Jackson back to T (am convinced he will start somewhere and EIch will be one T)). Yet, even if they want Jackson inside, they can always put Hunt back at T. He was no slouch there. A plus value wherever he lines up.

And yeah that was an excellent write on the FA period that should end at least some of the speculation.

Nick Needham gave me flashbacks of Toast Buckely when we first started him as an UDFA. The beginning half of the year he was getting torched every game while making plays when he wasn’t getting burned. As the year progressed he looked much better and has just kept getting better since. I like that we locked him up for 3.9M if another team doesn’t give us the 2nd round pick for him. Very good depth from an Acorn.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He had weight issues due to poor conditioning. He took it seriously and totally turned his career around. Now he’s a gamer.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

He was also a rookie and undrafted so he actually did an exceptional job starting with that pedigree.

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Saw a report on NFLN from Jane Slater who covers the Cowboys and she pointed out why they’re willing to shop La’el Collins. The feeling is he’s been battled injuries being placed on IR in 2020, then violating the league’s substance abuse policy last season which he fought and lost because there were rumors he bribed someone in the league to say he didn’t fail the test, so instead of a 2 game suspension he got a 5 game suspension. During that time he missed he opened the door for another guy to show he can handle the RT position. They then thought maybe he could play LG which he did earlier in his career but coaches felt he might have lost some bend.

So that’s just some intel I heard recently. I still think he’s worth pursuing.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I’d pass. If he were a free agent I would pick him up but not giving up a 1sr, 2nd or 3rd pick for him. Wait and see if they release him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think he’ll cost a 1st or 2nd. But our 3rd is basically a 4th round pick because it’s a compensatory pick from the 49ers due to the minority coaching compensation. So it’s somewhere after the first 32 picks in the 3rd round.

If our team feels he’s an upgrade at RT then I would do it. That said, we don’t even know if Grier and McDaniel are interested.

The man says “Ship her home! Definitely!”

The government worker says, “But sir, why don’t you bury her HERE in the Holy Land? That way she will be in the Holy Land and you can save over $44,000.00??!

Rock – I agree with you on the beginning of Needham’s first season. He was definitely getting exposed early on, but then really turned it around. Just think how crazy it is that they didn’t want Iggy on the field at all during the time Needham struggled.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Iggy did play a bunch for awhile before his playing time was very minimal. From what I saw he could physically stay with WRs but he got schooled over and over due to the finer points of the game. He stayed with his man but could not play the ball. This is a big year for him or he will officially be a bust and might not even make the team.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He is built more like a RB than WR. He was a WR and Wildcat QB in college. He has specialist traits. He could get some running plays ala Deebo. This is a big season for him to prove his worth as a 2020 3rd round pick.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Only has to prove he has better than a 4th minus a 6th back to prove he was worth our trade.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was talking more about his own pride. To get drafted in the 3rd round only to have the team that drafted you trade you that same year is not ideal.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He played QB in college (wildcat) and was drafted By the Raiders as a RB. Has the speed to do end arounds and one play in there the Phins had him ready to throw a pass. Seems McDainiels would be thinking a good fit for his surprise-filled O.

  25. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Goes with what some of you said you saw just watching games.

I’ve tried to remain silent about the Deshaun troubles, and I do not wish to discuss this, but I am very glad that the charges were considered by a grand jury and not enough evidence was found to charge him with any crime.
I hope he has learned a hard lesson about protecting himself from activities or conversations that can be used by unscrupulous people to try to extort money from him.
I feel bad for any person that he offended with his activities during massages, and I do not condone any activity which could be construed as harassment by Deshaun or anyone, but I also can see considerable gray areas in the massage experience. By definition of the massage, there will always be at least partial nudity combined with extreme hands-on contact lasting an hour or more.
The overt and accepted intention of a massage is to make the person receiving the massage feel really really good. The corollary is a concomitant state of relaxation. There is a bed, oils and lotions are applied, and skin to skin intimacy is required.
A large amount of trust must exist between the client and the massage pro, both that the masseuse will not injure the client and that the client will not misconstrue the touch as sexual.
Deshaun needs to realize that he is not in a boyfriend relationship with masseuses, just as men in strip clubs are not, no matter how friendly the girls may appear to be.
I hope he has learned to keep his massages in the team facility, where he has protection from entrapment but also no ambiguous moments between himself and the massage professionals caring for him after taking a beating as an NFL QB.

Son, the NFL is in a tough spot with Watson. With the #Woke movement, to just sweep the accusations under the rug and act like it never happened does not fit with the narrative they’ve been supporting. Watson probably gets 4-6 weeks suspension and teams will probably still trade for him. I just can’t see the price being what the Texans originally wanted.

  59. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t see where Tampa can trade for Watson with all their picks being toward the bottom of every round and no extra picks. The Colts have no 1st round pick and don’t pick until #42. Seattle has more to offer than those 2 teams unless Tampa throws in a top player like Vita Vea.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Even after it all came out Houston stuck to asking for four firsts or three first and two seconds, etc. If they stick to that future years have to be involved. Players could be part of it as well.

Stanger, the way McDaniel explained the racial question made me like him even more. Without being disrespectful he basically tried to say how silly it all is.

BLM started all of this racial divide in a time when black people and other minorities have prospered like never before. Because of a few bad apples, let’s broad stroke the entire nation as racist.

Now Brian Flores is rolling with that and he should be ashamed of himself. Maybe it was about your attitude Brian, and not the color of your skin.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Like McDaniel’s response as well. What it should be. But is a complex issue about more than BLM. Lots of white racists out there as well.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, the market is no longer $5-8M per year for every player. LOL

Ogbah makes an impact and is a well rounded DE/Edge player. I think he’s better than both of the guys listed below.

Olivier Vernon signed a 5 year $85M deal in 2016 with the Giants.
Trey Flowers signed a 5 year $90M deal in 2019 with the Lions.

I know those were both bad contracts but the NFL is a commodity business as in who’s available. It is what it is. At least our team knows Ogbah very well.

His two seasons with us he has 18 sacks, 45 QB hits, 17PD, 4FF, 2FR and 83 total tackles.

  68. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,
See, that’s exactly one of the things that really sounds good but isn’t. Sure, Ogbah knocked down a lot of passes. Why? Because he doesn’t get consistent, meaningful pressure on the QB….and he’s got long arms. Lots of knocked down passes from DL are because guys got stalled on their rush and jumped up to try to knock down a throw. That’s great. It’s what you’re coached to do. But, it’s more a function of a pass rush that didn’t get there than a great play. I have no problem with guys knocking down passes. It’s a good play. But, I evaluate a DE on whether or not he sacks or disrupts the QB first and foremost. Knocking down passes is down the list a ways. I really could care less how many passes they knocked down.
    ***
I would bet you a million dollars that Aaron Donald probably has about 25 PD in his whole career. Is he a bad player? No, he simply finishes his rushes and isn’t in position to knock down a bunch of throws.

And I like plenty of players! Just not too many on our team over the past 30 years, unfortunately. Sadly, I think I’ve been pretty accurate. I really think that unless Phillips turns into a beast we really need to continue improving our edge pieces, or we ain’t gonna have a shot in hell of competing for championships. Getting pressure on these QBs these days with everything favoring offenses has become even more important than ever. If you can’t do it at a high level,….with talent, scheme or both…you’re fucked. Simple as that. This defense, as good as it has been the last couple years, still gives up way too many big plays at bad times. Lack of pressure contributes to that.

  74. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I understand what Randy is saying, both about the money and preferring sacks, but
A pass knocked down at the LOS is a great thing two ways.
One it makes the QB and the OL think about it, and anything that confuses or distracts or delays the offense helps more bad offensive plays happen.
Plus, good QBs complete about 2/3 of their passes and good WRs catch a very high percentage as well, so if that knocked down throw had gotten out, there is a 2 to 1 probability that it would have been a completed pass and therefore a gain of yardage, a first down, or a TD.
Even the best sack artists in the NFL barely get one per game for a loss of a few yards plus a busted play and sometimes a FF. So Sacks are awesomer. But rare.
A PD at the LOS is a guaranteed incompletion the DBs don’t have to make downfield.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Incomplete passes and no gains don’t scream big plays but someone caused them. It’s not always a stat but it changes the course of the game.

I really hope we hear soon the Dolphins are working on re-signing Ogbah. As fans we kind of act like Phillips doesn’t exist. That guy could end up being a T.J. Watt type player. You heard it here first… unless you said it before me. LOL
