Next Step is here – NFL Free Agency

The Dolphins have already secured TE Mike Gesicki for the 2022 NFL season as they have placed the Franchise Tag on him. They can work out a long term deal or have his services for this season and reevaluate after. With a new HC, it’s difficult to say which is more likely. Other Dolphins players I would like us to re-sign are Emmanuel Ogbah, Nik Needham and Mack Hollins, and in that order. From outside our organization, I feel the interior of the O-line is a must fix so I would prefer to get Niners LG Laken Tomlinson. As some of you know, the Cowboys are willing to trade OL La’el Collins. Collins can play inside or outside, and can play either side at tackle, and play them all well. That’s a nice commodity to have, especially with what I believe is some young talent we have that we need to find spots for such as Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. Some have already given up on these players, I think that’s foolish. Collins has been a fixture on the Cowboys line since ’15, although he did miss most of the ’16 season tearing a ligament in his big toe Game 3. He was placed on IR and missed the rest of that season. Otherwise he has been a steady presence for the Cowboys. I don’t know what compensation the Cowboys expect for Collins but I’d give up a 2nd or 3rd RD pick without any hesitation to get Collins. With so high a demand for quality O-linemen, the Cowboys just might cash in much higher for Collins. I suppose I’d consider our 1st RD pick (#29) as well. Other possible picks at #29 are C Tyler Linderbaum, WR Jameson Williams and probably a host of others that I haven’t even considered but GM Chris Grier has his eye on. Collins would start and be an upgrade just about anywhere we put him, and lord knows we need to upgrade the O-line. There are quite a few avenues to consider though, being we have a good amount of cap room and we can find 2 good free agent OL in Free Agency.

Back to re-signing our own, the Dolphins have to make Emmanuel Ogbah a priority. It’s not that Ogbah is a guy who takes over games, he’s not that type of player. He is a guy that consistently gets pressure from his side of the field and despite not having gaudy numbers in any one defensive metric, he’s had over 20 QB hits each of the 2 seasons he’s played here, and although he missed double digit sacks by one each year, with the emergence of Jaelan Phillips, I think Ogbah and Phillips could be both be perennial double digit sack guys. Ogbah’s 2 best seasons were here in Miami, so I’d hope he’d want to return to the place where he’s been most successful, although in all fairness, money will talk. We’ll have to show Ogbah some love ($$$) if we want him back. DB Nik Needham is a player I just love to watch. I remember when we drafted some guy (Noah Igbinoghene) and had such high expectations for that player. Instead, it was Nik Needham thrust into duty and call him an overachiever or whatever you want but he always proved he belonged on the field. It’s hard not to like and admire Needham and I truly hope we retain him as a player. Mack Hollins is another one of those players like Needham. We know he’s a special teams ace and that guy was always around the football on ST’s. He was also thrust into duty when others were expected to be ahead of him, but due to injuries, Hollins got more playing time than expected. He showed up and played well all the time. So often I’d see Hollins make a play and both I and the announcer thought it was TE Mike Gesicki, #86 and #88 look similar and their lithe body types are close as well. #86 has to be re-signed so the confusion can continue.

When you look at improving the team, most of us feel the O-line is the place where it needs to begin. I also feel like the majority here feel we should be adding veterans and not spending high picks on the O-line, as we all know we’ve spent quite a few in the last 2 years as it is, one 1st RD pick in 2020 (Jackson), two 2nd RD picks, 2020 (Hunt), and 2021 (Eichenberg). In 2019, we spent a 3rd RD pick on C Michael Deiter and we spent a 4th RD pick in 2020 on OG Solomon Kindley. I could see spending another 1st RD potentially on center Tyler Linderbaum. If they feel he’d be an immediate upgrade and a long term solution at center, it’s hard to argue pulling the trigger on that. We can also pick up probably the best center available in free agency Ryan Jensen formerly of Tom Brady’s Bucs. Lots of different ways to approach it, and Chris Grier is well aware of that. Tough part is there will be high interest across the board on quality offensive linemen so if we want a player, we’ll have to be very aggressive and pay whatever is necessary in order to get them. Bargain hunting is not an option.

I’m sure Grier has a clear plan as to what he’s doing, and then fallback plans when those are foiled. Even though we have deep pockets, the competition will be so high there’s likely to be a quick frenzy to start the free agency period off. Other than money, is Miami a destination where players feel like they can win? We have a bright new Head Coach in Mike McDaniel, but he’s a first time Head Coach, so is winning immediately realistic? Of course we have nice climate, especially during the colder months of the season and we also have no state income tax which makes the money go even further. I look forward to seeing what Grier and the Dolphins do when the communications between NFL teams and players (agents) begin on Monday March 14th. I have a feeling the bottom line of the NFL channel feed will be ringing like a pinball machine. Hopefully we’re doing some of the ringing!

I think the good news is we should be able to improve the talent on this team both thru FA and the draft. I’m always a fan of trading out of the bottom of the first too if the value is there. FA has good players at a number of our areas of need too. Grier has options. We’ll see how he does.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed but hang in there and see if a prospect high on your board is getting close to your pick in the late 1st. That is sometimes a sweet spot.

Randy, what position would be at the top of your list in FA and who if you have one?

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A massive market is developing for former Seahawks’ All-Pro LB Bobby Wagner, league sources say. According to Jordan Schultz, the Dolphins are very interested in Bobby Wagner.

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I believe most of us here already realize as much, but just in case one didn’t already know…

  23. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Strictly my opinion: IF we sign Bobby Wagner and re-sign Emmanuel Ogbah, our Defense alone could potentially carry us deep into the playoffs.

And if we sign two O-Linemen via FA, our Offense could potentially carry us deep into the playoffs.

  24. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Count me IN for a trade to acquire La’el Collins. To lock him in for $10M/per over the next couple of years works. And if he can’t beat out Liam Eichenberg in camp for a Tackle position, kick La’el inside… he’d be a killer for us there.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s that $10M/per that makes the trade so enticing, knowing how good La’el can be. Hopefully, our new regime can coach him out of penalties.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Additionally, heard from someone I trust that La’el didn’t look healthy last year. Perhaps he’s back to normal. I suppose it’s worth the risk for a mere $10M/per, knowing what he’s capable of having done in the past.

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
We’ll, I guess the first thing I’d do is try to find a solid, vet OL. To me, Duane Brown makes sense, but he is 36. Jensen is good, but I’m not sure he’s a good scheme fit. He gets out of position some, and you can’t do that in an outside zone scheme. Plus, now that Brady’s back, he might want Jensen to stay and make it happen. There are a handful of OL guys I’d look at, but it kinda depends on how they have evaluated the guys they already have.
    ***
I’d take a serious look at Allen Robinson. I’m not gonna go nuts to sign him, but I think he could be a good fit with what we have already and could be ready to explode with better guys around him.
    ***
After that, I’d be looking to bring in either a guy who can get pressure off the edge or a LB who can stop the run….or both. I still haven’t gotten deep into draft/FA stuff. I’m really not even sure who’s available right now. Does it start this week?

  26. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m not moving Robert Hunt from RG. He has the potential to be an all pro. He’s got good enough feet that he should be able to transition to a zone heavy scheme. Don’t touch him unless he shows he can’t make the transition.

  27. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Butler was a big part of our DL rotation. He can fill a number of spots for you. I thought he had a pretty good season.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes and if you let him go who is going to replace him for less money and be at least as good?

If you can’t find that guy what was the point of creating more space?

These guys write such one sided articles sometimes

Why not just cut every, so we’d have over 100m?

For the same reason (except dead money) you wouldn’t cut everyone you don’t cut Butler

  28. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not sure we’re wling to give Ogbah 15+M, a guy that has never had double digit sacks

They likely have a price in mind, and if they can’t get him for that, then go after someone, that gets more sacks

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not all about having another $20M in cap space. To have the extra money to sign who?

Sometimes you keep a team together. We have plenty of money and draft capital to upgrade and add replacements and depth. I guess it depends on the plan.

    Go Phins!!!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m 100% with ya, man. I just hope we can make some rather impactful signings with the $$$ we’ve got at hand.

And it’s not so much about putting us over the top as a Super Bowl contender (though we could be a dark horse this year)… it’s more about the development of our future studs, such as Tua.

We must protect Tua and give him every opportunity to learn the right way… rather than him learning the David Carr way (DCS* = David Carr Syndrome ™).

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s all about Tua at the end of the day. He has to play at a high level. He knows that too. The 3rd season is big for any player and especially QBs. We have two 1st round picks next year to re-evaluate the QB position if we have too.

That’s why I said Grier has done a good job as a GM the last 3 seasons. Our cap is good and we have really good draft compensation. The team has won 19 of its last 33 games. It’s not like we’ve been at the bottom.

But!!! It’s time to take the next step. It’s not about coach McD as a first time HC, it’s about the talent we have. Can he take it to another level?

      Lol…we’ve probably all said it…..

I expect him too with more to work with and better scheme. I just don’t think one should expect Tua to carry the OL….that’s bullshit.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We need at least one of the following, but preferably both.
A true ultra fast deep threat WR and a true slot WR to free up Waddle to get intermediate throws, because he can take those to the house.
If we don’t get a real long speed WR, and enough OL to form a real pocket, then it’s impossible to blame Tua or even adequately evaluate him.

  34. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I don’t know how the OL get’s fixed in one season, but I’m all in if it does.

Hopefully, it will be acquiring a blend of tried and true and still in the game, looking within although I don’t see much except Hunt, and can you get a starting OL in the draft from our position. Yikes.

Lots of holes on the OL….Jesse Davis starting is a fucking hole…lol. We start there and I’m wondering who do we really have…blah, blah. Coaches need to coach to salvage it.

Would love to see it turn around for 2022. It starts there, imo.

  35. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

i don’t like the idea of creating holes. Then you just have to work hard to fill them and hope it works.
I’d keep most of our own guys, although not Hurns or Davis.
The way it went last year revealed exactly what we needed to win 2 or 3 more games.
A deep WR, a stud at ILB, a NFL quality starting RT, and a backup QB more closely matched to Tua, so we don’t have to scrap the game plan if he is out for a bit.
Upgrading those positions with 3 probowlers and a Tua clone QB would have won us 3 more games last year, and that’s a 12-5 season and a playoff berth.

But for what the Dolphins are looking to do this offseason to repair the offensive line, coupled with Mike McDaniel’s history of running the football, trading for a 28-year-old right tackle on a three-year, $30M contract seems like a no-brainer.

    SBNation

Except a 10m cap hit, when you could push it forward, is a lot

Could sign Gesicki longterm to lower his cap hit

Love the player and 3 yrs for 30m, not so much the cap hit, but we could add a 4th year and pay this year’s salary in a bonus

  45. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Spending in FA is fine when you grab the right people and keep them. Bringing in Karras and KVN only to let them go was dumb. Bringing in Ogbah and not locking him up is dumb. We’ve spent big in FA on players who have backfired on us too many times. Justin Smiley, Jake Grove, Mike Wallace, Will Fuller, Gbril Wilson etc… Nearly every FA running back we’ve brought in the last 10 years has done nothing for us. Smart moves need to be made.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If you sign all your FAs to longer term contracts and they don’t play to that contract you’re screwed for years, by using the short term method its allowed us to be where we are now with lots of space

Karras and KVN didn’t need to be let go. Ogbah deserves a new contract here. Our last 15 years have been overspending in bad investments during the offseason. We need to stop doing that.

Like the Ogbah extension. Really don’t like the Edmonds signing.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Feel the same. I don’t like signing an RB coming off an injury

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Edmonds came back from his high ankle sprain last season. He’s likely a McD guy and someone he was familiar with being in the same division with the 49ers.

  73. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I like the signing of Edmonds IF he can stay healthy. He needs to be paired with a guy like Duke because he’s probably better suited to being a change of pace or 3rd down guy instead of getting 300 carries. If we are really going to be running the ball a lot more….I’ll believe it when I see it….then we need 3 or 4 reliable backs.

  74. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

6 million a year for a running back who’s never had over 600 yards or over 4 touchdowns in a season? McDaniel better Run Ricky Run his butt and get every ounce of salary cap’s worth out of this guy.

  75. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    sb7,
I see Edmonds more in the role of catching a lot of passes and trying to get YAC. I don’t think….or maybe I hope….that he isn’t going to be our RB workhorse. He’s never done that, so I can’t see them expecting him to run the ball a ton. I’d be surprised if he even gets 200 carries. But, maybe he catches 50-60 balls.

16.2 per year on Ogbah was a little higher than I had hoped but glad he is back. He deserved that contract.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Compared to other Edge guys his contract is on the cheaper side. We all discussed that the market for those guys is not cheap. I’m psyched that he’s back with us.

  78. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Glad to see Ogbah was retained. Not going to comment on the cap numbers. They are ALL overpaid to play a kids game. Edmonds? Meh….

  79. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t see anything special, at all, to give him 6 mil per over Duke Johnson. He looks and plays like he is afraid to get hit or even attempt to punish a DB trying to tackle him. How the fuck did he even get injured (multiple) the way he plays?

I have to retract my 12:45 comment.

  80. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I guess McDaniel saw Edmunds twice a year up close so he knew he’d fit.

  81. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    He seems to be athletic!

  82. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Still need an OT and after Ogbah signing I don’t see us making a play for Wagner

  83. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Edmonds is more of a scat back. You try to get him in space and use him in the passing game. If McD is the running game genius you guys think he is, then he’ll figure out a way to use him, and he could be a very nice nookie blanket for Tua on 3rd downs.
    ***
Ogbah? All I gotta say is he better at least maintain his average production. If he doesn’t, this was a terrible resigning. Frankly, for that kinda money, he should be getting double digit sacks and not rank about 315th or so in tackles.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Average production? Back to back 9 sack seasons, one of the highest percentages of QB pressure in the league, leading the league in deflected passes in addition to being very good at setting the edge. Ogbah earned his payday

Yes Stanger I fault Biden and the EU

    ——————-
Right with you that the EU should have pursued non-Russian sources of energy, particularly after Putin threatened to turn off the valve/pipeline after it took Crimea. Why have been saying they should have increased LNG receiving capacity.

What particularly are you blaming Biden for. Lack of current US energy independence like before? The article, like you before mentioned. Keystone and issuing enough drilling permits (both of which would have a very long lag before impacting production.

What the article does not mention is what I brought up before — The crippling of US oil production cause of the 2019/2020 oil price crash (Trump’s watch) and the macro-economic factors due to Covid that caused it not to rebound (which started on Trump’s watch). It’s like talking about the Titanic without mentioning the iceberg.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I agree that almost all of the seeds of this inflation including the gas prices were sown years before Biden got elected. And I’m not even blaming Trump per se, I’m blaming Big Oil taking advantage of drivers and Europe’s failure to plan.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Give me a break Naples

I suppose all the money biden has been sending out was sewed before he got elected too, actually it could be it does follow their narrative to kill the middle class

Problem with biden is he doesn’t even try to curtail high gas prices and inflation

They asked the jackass about gas prices and he says, they’re going to go up (a big FU to every American)

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It doesn’t. Mention what you said Stanger, because it’s from 2018

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The article itself goes after Biden for his energy policies. Is your point that Trump had good advice to Europe. Already agreed with that above.

  88. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The highlight reels on Edmunds show nimble feet, great vision, and sneaky ability to always be open as the outlet checkdown guy with great hands and good YAC.
Really good acceleration through the hole and pulls away from LB downfield easily.

  89. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, it’s not that McD is the running game genius we think he is, that’s his reputation in the league and people who have been around him. None of us here made that up.

Maybe we can allow our new coach to bring in players he likes instead of shitting on them right out of the gate. Geez!!!

“The Miami Dolphins have agreed to a four-year, $65 million deal with defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, according to a report.

Ogbah will receive $32 million in guaranteed money.”

  93. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We had a putrid rushing game last year and for several before that, so rolling with who we had is not a wonderful idea.
Instead, giving McDaniel a guy he likes and has played against twice a year the whole time McDaniel was in SF is fine with me.

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We are likely to use a RB by committee approach and ride the hot hand in games. Edmonds is a really good receiver. Think ball control offense.

  95. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Hey, I can like Ogbah and still not like his contract. His production better not slip..and with the kinda money he just got paid, it should improve.

  96. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I do not think the president can tell any company what it can charge for its product, and I would not want that to be the way it is anyway.
I believe in freedom from government intrusion into business except as necessary to prevent danger to consumers in health and safety.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The fed has held interest rates at near zero for years before Biden, which it had to do because of covid and which Trump enjoyed as it stimulated the stock market.
However, that cannot go on indefinitely, so now it is time for the Fed to unwind its positions (tapering) and allow interest rates to inch back up to normal range.
Neither Biden nor any other president controls the Fed, which is an independent entity.
However, if the rates go up 2 percent that results in a rise in inflation.
Can’t be helped and most companies have not raised prices in years because they couldn’t with demand so low due to covid, so now they are all rushing to raise prices.
This cycle will ease to normalcy soon.
      It always does.

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m really not interested in a political debate, but can someone please explain to me just how a President controls gas prices other than by taxes? I’m asking because I truly have no clue.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

      Socialism by setting price caps

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

nooooo I am completely opposed to socialistic price controls.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I was tongue in cheek. People bitch they want the government to control prices but then they bitch when the government tries to claiming it’s socialism

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Which of course would mean decreased production in the long term and increased exports in the short-term (unless the gov wants to mandate those aspects as well).

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not much else in the short term other than release oil from the strategic oil reserve (which Biden has done, but isn’t really big enough to counter the market price) or try to get countries with turn on/turn off production capability like Saudi Arabia to pump more (which the US is trying to get done).

Long term there are other possibilities, but we are talking years to really impact.

  98. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken,
Sorry. What does that mean? Can a President set certain price caps for how much an oil company can charge for a gallon of oil or gas? Socialism? Huh? Are you saying Presidents do this now, or they could?
