Dolphins will be competitive in AFC in 2022

So many moves have been made, and in general, the prevailing thought at this time is that the Dolphins are in a good place. We’ve left behind the ugliness of the split between the Miami Dolphins and former Head Coach Brian Flores and the accusations levied against owner Stephen Ross. I feel like all that ugliness has been left behind, and the negative slant that was hanging on the Dolphins organization has craftily been removed and replaced by a hefty dose of optimism. 3 months and change have passed since Brian Flores was let go and to me it’s startling how much this Dolphins front office has done to change the entire appearance of our team, and organization as well. I feel a sense that the Dolphins are in good hands, both with GM Chris Grier and his Head Coach Mike McDaniel. Sure, they used a fair amount of media clips to pump up new HC Mike McDaniel and his crucial impending relationship with QB Tua Tagovailoa. They seem to have finally committed to the young QB who has always deserved that from the get-go yet for some reason the Dolphins brass chose not to. I believe that the new tact will enable Tua to be better at his job, of course in addition to all the new faces who will now be wearing aqua, white and orange. The entire dynamic of the team has changed, and will likely continue to change until the season begins. As my last article said, they’re all in, and there will be additional pieces, possibly importance pieces that will be added to give this team what it needs to compete with the likes of many improved AFC teams such as the Bills, Raiders, Broncos, Colts and others.

Looking at the roster now, it seems so much more complete, the gaping holes are now gone. I still believe they’re not finished with the O-line and help may come still from free agency or via the draft, or even after June 1st cuts. The good thing is we aren’t desperate now at any position on the line. We have our LT and LG and probably our RG, and possibly our center too in 4th year C Michael Deiter. We’ve all discussed C prospect Tyler Linderbaum who is the top C prospect in the ’22 NFL Draft. I think the key issue is does the FO see Linderbaum as an immediate upgrade to our current C? If not, we may look elsewhere for a C or just stay with Deiter. Keep in perspective the O-line is a unit, and when everyone else around you is better, you’re better too.

As of now, the Dolphins first draft pick will be late RD 3, pick #102. That pick can still net a starter, or we may choose to use either a player or players, or future and current draft capital to move up to acquire a special player. The latter would not surprise me considering we’re now operating in a window of time where we have in order to be competitive. That window can always change, but right now it looks to be a 2 year window, which in turn would lead me to believe we’re looking for players to make an impact now, not 3 years from now. While some of us think C is the big issue, Naples wisely pointed out our depth at DE is thin. We re-signed Emmanuel Ogbah which was critical, but there’s really no one behind him at this time. Zach Seiler was a great pickup but he plays on the other side. Daeshon Hall who has played a total of 75 snaps at DE in 3 seasons is what we got. I think Naples has an excellent point that if Ogbah goes down, we’re in trouble. I love CB Nik Needham, but I’m not sure I’d want Needham to be starting if either X or Jones went down. We do have reclamation project #9 in Noah Igbinoghene as well, but he hasn’t given any indication he’s ready for prime time yet either. Do we finally draft a RB? It’s been a while since we invested early on a ballcarrier, Kalen Ballage was a 4th RD pick in ’18, (#131). We took newly acquired RB Chase Edmonds’ RB mate in ARZ Kenyan Drake in RD 3 (#76) in 2016. There’s no immediate need for a RB unless they wanted a bigger back, and don’t feel that last year’s 7th RD pick Gerrid Doaks is the answer. We have a lot of lightning in our RB stable but no thunder.

The new look Miami offense is no doubt more impressive than what it was a month ago. The O-line has been addressed and now we have one of the most dynamic WR’s in the sport. Tyreek does it all, and don’t for a moment underestimate his potential as a return man on special teams. He will be getting lots of touches in this offense, some behind the LOS or at the LOS and hopefully a bunch downfield as well. No matter what though, Hill is a player that requires the other teams full attention, he must be accounted for each and every play. Having a player like that makes things easier for guys like Jaylen Waddle, who received plenty of attention last season, and rightfully so. Add in Cedrick Wilson and a few of the guys in the backfield who will be used as receivers out of the backfield or on the LOS such as Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Myles Gaskin. I just can’t help thinking this will not be the stagnant, toothless offense we watched all too many times last season. Hey! We actually added a FB too! FB Alec Ingold will bring some physicality to the offense as well.

On the defensive side of the ball we did all we could to bring it all back intact, and succeeded. We will have all our starters and many of the same depth players as well throughout the defense. This was a good defense, maybe even just below a great defense that unfortunately had to carry the team on many occasions. A better offensive output this season I believe will lead to better things out of our defense. If the offense can run more plays and put a lot more points on the board weekly, our defense will have the advantage of the opposing offense being on their heels a bit trying to keep up. That usually allows for a more aggressive defense, and we’re a pretty aggressive unit anyway. We should also continue to see growth for 2 budding stars in DE/OLB Jaelan Phillips and S Jevon Holland. Safety Brandon Jones is another. DE Christian Wilkins made the leap to a high level last season. No Dolphins defender had as well rounded a season as Wilkins, contributing 89 combined tackles, 4.5 sacks, 13 QB hits, leading the team with 10 TFL, 1 FF and 1 FR. That’s NFL elite right there. #55, Jerome Baker had another great season leading the team with 92 tackles. Unfortunately, Bobby Wagner who had nearly twice that many tackles and would have looked great in aqua and orange is headed to the LA Rams and another chance at a SB berth in the NFC. I don’t honestly know if we were interested in Wagner, but I was!

I guess if you want to look for a glaring hole, look no further than P, because we don’t have one. Last year’s punter Michael Palardy was here on a 1 year deal so we’ll be looking. Some here have already fallen in love with P prospect Matt Araiza, the highest rated special teamer in the draft at 6.09. I can only imagine young Stanger dreaming of his favorite new player! Penn St. Punter Jordan Stout is right behind Araiza at 5.99. It’s possible we use a pick on a P, or we may just fill that spot in FA. Palardy remains unsigned after an uneven year last year.

Good job Mike, think we can say the same about Grier

It’s time to take a real step into the playoffs and win a game or 3

Nicely written, MikeE. Now we’ll have to wait and see how this team actually performs on the field. It’s been awhile since I’ve looked forward to a season of football like I am this one. If they pull a Lucy on me, I may have to fly a damn banner or something!

Another well written analysis Mike. I admire the optimism, but I am snake-bit, and until I’ve seen at least the first 6 regular season games, this team is still a dysfunctional mess in my eyes (still peddling hope to the unwary). 😂😂😂

I do feel better than most other rebuilds, if that’s any consolation.

Anyway, it’s beer o’clock. Have a good one mob. Cheers.

PS Just saw this and thought I’d share.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks UK! Not nitpicking, but after 6 games we won’t know enough, just look at least season at 1-5. Please don’t let that happen again though, that would really suck!

    Great article Mike E.
I do think many folks are unaware of how many good players we have on Defense.
IF Phillips progresses as much next year as he did last year, he’ll make that side as unpleasant for QBs as Ogbah does on his side, and Phillips is on the blind side, so look out!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phillips is kind of flying under the radar. He showed a lot of progress as the season went on. For a guy his size he moves really well and he can run. He also showed the strength at the POA to set the edge. I expect him to get to another level this year.

Ugh!!! What’s significant time? I thought it was his back???

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ok, not horrendous. Thought you were gonna say first 3 months of the season. Still, it’s alarming because he hasn’t been right for over a year, so it’s hard to lean on him as your ace. Looks like Scherzer will take over that role and then whatever you get from deGrom is gravy. Damn shame, because I love to watch him pitch

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think it’s very alarming. Even if he does come back let’s say in June, how long does he last?

  13. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Nice write Mike E. Quit your day job and get press credentials

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

One way you can look at where this team is at, is that we’re focused on a punter, C and ILB.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The way it should be, not relying on draft picks, and at non significant positions

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      True and very reassuring …
Another way to look at it is
1 — the punter we had last year was a leader in dropping them inside the 20, and he’s still available, and there are at least 3 draftable college punters this year.
2 — Our starting Center from last year is back, and our HC, GM, and other teams like the guy even though it was his first NFL year at Center, and a quality FA Center is out there if we want him.
3 — our starter, 2nd string, and 3rd string ILB are back, and all 3 of them will knock the snot out of RBs if they can find them.
      … …
So our 3 biggest holes are just places we want upgrades, and upgrades are available. These are not places with worthless disasters on the roster that we are hopelessly stuck with due to cap or contract issues or because nothing better is obtainable.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right! No team has every position where they want it. You need a bunch of good players to make enough plays to win despite some deficiencies.

We’ll obviously have a punter. The OL is still my biggest concern but we did improve it. The depth has to be better if they have to play though. I don’t know what the 5 guy lineup will be. If I was to guess:
        LT Armstead
        LG Williams
        C Deiter
        RG Hunt
        RT Eichenberg/Jackson

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – This just tells me he may never be right, so like I said you move on and if you get anything from deGrom, it’s gravy. I’d be looking for a starter, and a damn good one if I were the Mets. This was the strength of this team, that one – two punch at the top of the rotation. Take that out and they’re probably a wild card team at best.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Unless another pitcher steps up and has a great season I agree.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right now we have 1) Scherzer, 2) Bassitt, 3) Carrasco, 4) Walker, 5) Megill. They’re all question marks, with the exception of Bassitt who had a nice season last season and pitched the entire season. Carrasco was hurt most of the season, Walker unraveled in the 2nd half after a really nice 1st half, and Megill will be in his second season as a MLB starting pitcher who has less than 90 innings under his belt. If they really did mistreat Marcus Stroman, that one could bite them in the ass. Need someone to eat up some innings.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! Is Pederson in the mix too?

Mike E — that was your State of the Dolphins Address, and a great one. We’ll see what happens, but all the reason in the world to expect more than the day the world changed with Armstead (sorta expected) and Tyreek (like getting hit by a truck running a red light and liking it).

And heck yeah I want Araiza. Would well be worth a 4th and have more impact than any other player we could take in that round. Plus, he’s jersey worthy.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      LOL @ jersey worthy!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      Thanks Stanger!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The thing about Araiza is he is a really good athlete who can run and makes tackles. He brings more to the table than just punting. Not sure you want your punter taking too many collisions but that guy is impressive. I would not be surprised if he goes in the 3rd round. Remember our 3rd round pick is really a 4th round value.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Not to mention, he is also your backup Kicker.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t think would want him bashing in as much as he did in college, but an athletic contain would go a long way to helping out return coverage. Most punters are just a deer in headlights.

And yeah I’d take him with a 3rd pick, but that’s me and doubt the FO.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good point BBMike. Araiza could also be involved in some the fake stuff that Sanders and other punters have done in recent times.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Agreed, Stanger.

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Yeah, Peterson will be the next guy up if one of the previously mentioned guys can’t go. I suppose he’s in competition for that 5th spot too, but I really like Megill. He seems very steady, not up and down like Peterson has been

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I like Megill’s upside too. He has a really even keeled personality as well.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

        Are these ILBs?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL Naples – Megill is 6’7 but he doesn’t run especially well. Sorry for the NY Mets talk. The nice weather hits and baseball just starts flowing through my system. Plus, Tim brought up some bad news regarding our ace Jacob deGrom.

    LT Armstead

    … …
This is exactly what I think it will be. I don’t see how it can be otherwise, nor would I want it to be.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What else could it be absent a FA or a draft pick winning a spot? Guess only other option with what we have now is Hunt at T and the other two fighting it out for G.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe that won’t be the lineup even with those 6 guys. We don’t know yet. What if it’s this:
        LT Armstead
        LG Eichenberg/Jackson
        C Deiter
        RG Williams
        RT Hunt

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Could be that too. Guess should have said “what else should one be projecting”?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Williams or Coleman at RT

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For those worried about our blind side, there are ways to help that with blocking schemes. If you don’t feel your RT can hold up one on one against specific talented edge guys, you can help out with blocking schemes, a TE , FB and RB to chip, call some short pass plays early on to see how he’s matching up. That’s part of the game. Teams attack the opponents weaknesses and that’s part of the chess match. That’s why most games are usually close. Sometimes it comes down to one or two plays that decides the game.

  25. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Here’s Joe Schad’s list of some of the guys we might take at #102.

Zyon McCollum, Sam Houston St. CB — 4.33, physical ballhawk.
Cameron Jurgens, Nebraska C — Quick, athletic.
Brandon Smith, Penn State LB — Explosive blitzer.
Dohnavan West, Arizona State C — Zone scheme fit.
Luke Fortner, Kentucky C — Quick, balanced.
Brian Asamoah, Oklahoma ILB — Speedy, good tackler.
Darian Kinnard, Kentucky G — Move Rob Hunt to tackle?
Isaiah Spiller, Texas A&M RB — Value pick for stable?
Justyn Ross, Clemson WR — 6-foot-4 deep threat.
Matt Araiza, San Diego State P — Nicknamed “Punt God.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We could definitely just roll with BPA with a lean towards a want/need. Meaning if the C and RB are even on the board go C.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What Schad was thinking as well. He picked out the fits on ESPN’s draft ranking starting at #90. So some of those guys will be gone, but many should be there.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Kinnard can also play OT, I think. Rather have Velus Jones than Ross.

      Good list!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I still think a draft trade could happen. 😉

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If I had to pick a fav on that list at 102, would be Jurgens as a want/need then McCollum as a BPA.

Jurgens is smart also. Seen him identify outside stunts pre snap based on watching tape and what the defense is showing him in game (Interview video I can’t find now). He identified it, was uncovered with no one to block so he pulled to the outside to pick up the stunt. Saw him do it multiple times.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I looked into Cameron Jurgens and he looks like the type of Center we’re looking for. That dude can move and play physical.

  26. Randy's avatar Randy says:

With a QB like Tua, who you hope will end up being kind of like Drew Brees, you want really good inside protection. Hunt has all pro potential at guard. Yeah, he could play tackle, but he’s a power blocker not a movement guy….even on the edge…and guys only get slower with age. In his rookie year, his footwork was pretty bad, but he compensated for it with sheer power…grabbing guys and controlling them that way. I think guys would eventually go to school on him at tackle and we’d see him begin to struggle. At guard, he might be dominant. If he works at it and cleans up a couple things, he could be one of the best guards in the league. Think Jahri Evans. That would be a big help to Tua.

  30. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When discussing Michael Deiter; since we drafted him in the 3rd round in 2019 he’s basically been a versatile guy who played a few different positions for us with some starts but mostly as a backup. Last year he wins the starting C job in TC and then gets hurt in week 3 and doesn’t return until week 13. We went 4-1 in those last 5 games. We used 4 different centers last year.

When looking at last season in 20/20 hindsight, the OL was not handled well with both coaching and personnel. Flores changed coaches on offense multiple times during his tenure, both OC and OL, and along with Grier they went too young too soon.

These are the things that media and fans that don’t really know our team that well don’t realize when bashing Tua.

Adding Armstead and Williams gives us a vet presence and upgrades on the OL. Mike McDaniel was hired as HC to fix the offense and get the team to another level. It’s not a surprise the direction on defense was kept in tact with some personnel and by retaining DC Josh Boyer and some other coaches on defense.

An offense that can score more points with the defense that we’ve been building could equal 2-3 more wins. That’s playoffs. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

X is one of those players where the organization said now is the time to strike and go for it. We keep building and waiting with the draft in the 4th season of the 2019 blow it up season, we’re going to have to start replacing players soon. They are all in.

Don’t count out that draft trade. 😉

  35. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I see no reason whatsoever NOT to make a move in the draft. We have nothing to wait for. I’m not saving picks for insurance if Tua doesn’t work out. There’s always ways to manipulate the draft whether you have 2 first RD picks or just one. Let’s make the best team we can right now.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Totally agree. The future is just that. You don’t do what you did this offseason worrying about what happens if this or that doesn’t happen. Rebuilds are easy to start over for any franchise. Why not try to win when the time is right? It’s pretty friggin obvious. LOL

“We’re not going to trade the entire 2023 draft to do it. LOL”

Our team is loaded with young players who won’t be up for new contracts if they pan out for a few years. We have time to address that. But why not try and go for it now with the makeup of the team?

I don’t see the value of moving up to get anyone. I’ve never had a problem with making moves but no matter who you name in this draft he isn’t a must have player so why bother. May as well get vets that are up to speed if they feel there’s a need.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not sure how you can say that. Let’s just say they think Linderbaum is an upgrade over Deiter. You trade up to get him and you have him for at least 5 years and your team is better. I’m not saying we have to but I’m also saying there’s no reason not to

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

He’s not a next year’s first better than Deiter I bet he wouldn’t even beat out Deiter.

Totally agree. And maybe it’s not Linderbaum. But another player they think helps them be a better team. We’ve seen what we’ve done. This team is gearing up for a run. Yeah let’s stop because those 2023 picks are the key to the future. This team is all about 2022. It’s not going to fall apart in 2023. We’re on a 1-3 year go for it schedule.

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – what known are we giving up? A draft pick is always a gamble, including the selection we’d make if we decide to trade up.

  45. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

You don’t who Deiter is? Do you think he can be better with better coaching? Do you think he can excel with OGs next to him? I do.

I don’t know shit about Linderbaum’s NFL career. Do you?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna, I’m just giving an example. It doesn’t have to be Linderbaum, it’s any player that makes us better this year and beyond. But let’s say it is Linderbaum, he’s a first round pick which means he’s a top prospect. Deiter was a 3rd RD pick and hasn’t established himself as a starter until last season and he wasn’t that good. Whether we draft Linderbaum or someone else does, I’d bet that he starts wherever he goes and I have a feeling he succeeds.

We had been doing basically the same thing over and over for years, building, tearing down, and then rebuilding over and over. We’re finally making a run, going all in. Enjoy it! I think the two DT’s from UGA (Davis and Wyatt) could play NT. They are talented enough to fit any scheme. I think both may get drafted in first round though, especially Davis.

Two I like, along with Mathis, who may be in reach are:
NT/DT Travis Jones, UCONN, 6’4 325. Big dude can move too ran 4.92.
    NT/DT John Ridgeway, Arkansas, 6’4 327

Think Mathis and Jones are gone in 2nd round. Ridgeway should be there when we pick. Another dude from LSU ain’t bad either.

    Kong,
Strange trade, and it would suggest to me that they really didn’t get any other decent offers. The whole trading within the division is a little overblown, but it can come back to bite you. Parker is pretty talented. If he stays healthy, Bellicheck will find a way to use him. He’s a good fit for a guy like Jones who needs his WRs to make plays for him.
    ***
It’s a risk, but this is a new regime. Parker really doesn’t know a thing about what the offense will be like, so at least he can’t feed NE info there. Still, you’d like to think you could do better than this.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Well said, Randy. I’m not even sure how to grade the comp. Generally speaking, next year’s 3rd is a 2022 4th, and we traded a 2022 5th in return, so value-wise, we turned a 5th into a 4th.

Although, when you look at our 2023 picks now- two 1sts, and two 3rds. We really have ammo to move to the top of the draft if we need to (which hopefully we don’t have to for a QB).

I don’t necessarily agree with the draft value chart, especially future picks, it depends on the situation

Any rookie we would’ve drafted in the 5th wasn’t going to make much of a contribution, other than Araiza

A 3rd next year is a much better pick, so for this trade I’m OK with the compensation, it’s better than getting a 2022 4th
