Don’t overlook Dolphins defense

It’s obvious that the focus of this offseason has been the offense. We traded for one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the NFL in Tyreek Hill. We brought in hands down the best LT available in free agency in Terron Armstead. We signed free agent RB’s Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert, as well as tendering Salvon Ahmed. We signed FA WR Cedrick Wilson formerly of the Dallas Cowboys. The huge contracts and majority of trades and signings happened on the offensive side of the ball, but we very quietly brought back our entire starting 11 on defense, as well as most of the depth players behind them. You can ask “Was our defense that great last year that we stand pat?” Yes, and no would be my answer. I think we have a great mix of young and veteran players, and most of our veteran players are still young.

Our RDE Christian Wilkins had an elite year, and there’s no reason to think he won’t either play as well or better this season. We have some young players that just started to show how good they can be such as SLB/DE Jaelan Phillips and safeties Jevon Holland and Brandon Jones. Raekwon Davis came off an early injury and wasn’t 100% last year and I expect bigger things from our young NT. Our veteran CB duo is still among the best CB tandems in the NFL if not the best. While X is the big playmaker, whether it’s an INT, a forced fumble or fumble recovery, he’s always around the football making plays. Byron Jones is a very underated cover corner. A lot of teams just avoid X and throw at Jones, and Jones is a top 10 rated CB on PFF, if you care about such things. Jones isn’t a WR playing CB, he’s a CB who just blankets his guy. Zero INT’s, but he rarely gets beat bad. Our two young safeties Holland and Jones looked better as the season went on and Eric Rowe is also a fine player. Jerome Baker is another underrated player, he plays every down and and does it all, from making the routine tackles to blitzing, to covering RB’s and TE’s, #55 is there. CB Nik Needham is one of my favorites and just a guy who steps in and gets it done. AVG hasn’t really busted out, and he may never do it, but he’s a guy that gets a lot of pressure, in fact he had the second most QB hits on the defense with 20 behind Emmanuel Ogbah, who we re-signed to a big contract. He’s worth every penny.

One thing that is easy to skip past is that the huge investment in the offense will help the defense. If we can keep the chains moving and score more than we did last year, which I believe is nearly certain, then the defense will be on the field less, and won’t be forced to carry the team as often as it did. If we can jump on some teams and take some leads for a change, that puts the pressure on the opposing offense and makes them more one dimensional, and will play right into our strength, better pass rush and lockdown, playmaking secondary. We were 22nd in points scored and 16th in points allowed. Say we go up to midpack or better in scoring points, to 16th or better, I’m almost going to guarantee you that our points allowed will drop into the top 10.

This team should be a lot of fun to watch. The speed on the offense with Mostert, Hill, Waddle and Gesicki is going to be fun. All of a sudden, that left side of the line with Armstead and Williams will be plowing spaces for the run game, the screen game, and add in FB Alec Ingold, you just have to expect a better result running the football. We brought back blocking TE Durham Smythe, Michael Deiter is our C, and our best OL from last season, RG Robert Hunt should stay right there. There should be a fierce battle for the RT spot, between Austin Jackson, Liam Eichenberg, Larnell Coleman and Robert Jones, and potentially another player who is not yet on the roster, either a draftee or post June cut. I understand we have a new system but I feel we’re in good hands with Mike McDaniel. I don’t expect him to struggle implementing his system. The players like him, listen to him. he r-e-l-a-t-e-s to them. They get him. He’s charismatic. Our team will be all in, and we will be much better on offense, we have so much more talent. Talent wins. So while the offense will be much better, don’t overlook the Dolphins defense!

I am still in the belief that our emissions are only a very small fraction of contributing.to global warming to the point if we were to cut it by 90% tomorrow worldwide it wouldn’t make a difference.

I still think it is the cycle of pole shifting that has caused the warming and cooling of the earth. The pole shift also weakens the earth’s magnetic field. When the poles shift, the earth warms. When the shift slows and halts the earth cools. We are in a major pole shift right now.

“So says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A few years ago, navigational services around the world were alerted that the magnetic North Pole is moving toward Siberia at about 34 miles a year. Satellite studies have confirmed the shift and, moreover, that it is picking up speed. While such developments may have mattered little in pre-industrial times, today’s world with its heavy dependence on satellite communications, electrical grids, the internet, etc. has plenty of reason for concern.”

“Professor Peter Huybers used state-of-the-art computer models to prove that tiny shifts in Earth’s axis, cause glaciers to either advance or retreat in cycles lasting either 10,000 or 40,000 years. In a paper published in a December, 2011 issue of the journal Nature, Huybers explained that there are two cycles of tilt change known as ‘obliquity’ and ‘precession.’ When they align correctly, ice melts. When they oppose each other, glaciers advance.”

That’s my 2 cents so I will continue to drive my F250 and wife will continue to drive her SS Camaro without the thought of contributing to global warming. lol

Because Florida lies so close to the equator, it receives stronger sunlight than the rest of the country. If you shine a flashlight on a globe, right in the middle, the area where the light is the brightest represents the areas where the sun’s radiation is most concentrated, and this is responsible for creating heat. If you spin the globe slowly, just as the Earth turns on its axis to create day and night, you’ll also discover that Florida is almost always right in the path of your flashlight during the day. As such, the radiation builds, and the atmosphere traps the heat.”

WONDERFUL! I’m sure you had a grand time listening to the Halle Orchestra in person… need to put that on my bucket list. I’ve seen this very video before and just like the last time, it gave me goosebumps.

Then the next book, I really hate Karsa.

I’ve always like Ingram, but why not explore the younger (by 2 years) Anthony Barr?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They’re different types of players. Ingram is more edge. The AFC has been loading up in the pass game. That’s why we did what we did. It seemed the org said we can’t compete by waiting for a draft and development. We need to strike now. And we did. We’re playing the same game now.

Like any series these days that goes over about three books, it can be a slog some of the time. The Malazan series can be a tough read. By the end of it I felt like I’d been in a marathon and was just putting one foot in front of the other to get the damn thing finished. I’d forgotten tons of stuff as he pulled it all together. Some of the series was phenomenal though, and I did enjoy most of the experience. I felt the same way about the Sword Of Truth and Wheel of Time series. 8-10-12 book series is a lot.

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, what are you asking me about massive mismatch? I think the skill we have on offense can be massive mismatch nightmares for opponents. Too much speed and skill.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua can’t get the ball downfield quick enough for it to be a massive mismatch

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We shall see. It’s not about down the field, it’s about quick throws and YAC. Most teams do not hit on as many deep passes as people think. The speed and skill we have at WR is going to force teams to play us Cover 2. Then we run and gets backs into the passing game which is our new HC’s bread and butter. When they can’t stop that and stack the box and play Cover 3, the deep passing game opens up.

  41. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Barr is a 4x Pro-Bowler, whereas Ingram is a 3x Pro-Bowler… and Barr is two years younger.

I was merely wondering aloud if maybe we should chase Barr, and that perhaps a new system here in Miami might serve him better than what Minny had for him. ‘Twas an honest and earnest question, no?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dude, all I said is they’re not the same type of player. Ingram is more Edge. Barr has been a box 4-3 LB. Maybe we’re looking for edge not a Barr type player. I’ve always been a fan of Barr. He has been a pretty good player….multiple pro bowler. With his high salary, the fact that MN is switching to a 3-4, and the injury concerns, he probably wasn’t gonna stick with the Vikes anyway. His knees are the biggest concern. They’ve been an issue for years, but he’s played thru it mostly. Ingram is probably a better option if all you’re looking for is pressure.

He is one I have talked about. Played Center and LT for Wake Forest. His best position is Center but had to play LT for WF due to depth issues. He played well at LT but doesn’t have the length to play it in the NFL. He would be an immediate backup at Center and Tackle.

At 6-foot-5 and 312 pounds, the Demon Deacon took part in the NFL Scouting Combine, where he ran a 4.94-second 40-yard dash and a 7.32-second three-cone drill.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I see we also brought in ILB Channing Tindall for a visit along with Baylor safety JT Woods. I thought safety would be another position we would look at. I don’t think we resign Rowe after this season.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah, where we’re drafting, we’re in position to replace guys in the future, not this year, if someone falls in our lap or plays over his head in camp it could happen this year, but you don’t plan for it

  54. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know nothing about OLB Cameron Goode who came for a visit. Didn’t think we needed another OLB. He recorded a 4.58-second 40-yard dash, 39-inch vertical jump, 6.91-second 3-cone drill, and 4.29-second 20-yard shuttle at his Pro Day.

Goode (6-4, 240) recorded 45 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, and four passes defensed in 2021.

He’s got talent but also an injury history.

Thinking about the Flores lawsuit vis-a-vis the Dolphins.

In his amended complaint Flores claims:
““Mr. Flores memorialized Mr. Ross’ desire to have Miami lose games in a December 4, 2019 memorandum that was provided to General Manager, Chris Grier; Chief Executive Officer, Tom Garfinkel; and Senior Vice President of Football and Business Administration, Brandon Shore. In this letter, Mr. Flores detailed the toxicity that existed within the organization and explained the unreasonable position he was being placed in by the team ownership and upper management.”

But he didn’t get fired till end of season 2021 and claims he didn’t tank. Seems that could get Ross in trouble if proved but is a big old lose on the legal side.

The claims of racial discrimination against the Phins seem to just be a platform for others to join in. Greir and Flores were the only black HC/GM combo in the league. And the next HC hire has a black father.

Bottom line — I want to learn more about what’s in that memo. They have only described it at this point and lawyers are good at turning something into what it isn’t.

  67. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    ▪ This week, ESPN host Mike Greenberg asked the latest variation of the question he routinely poses about the NFL’s 2020 quarterback draft class, a group including the Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa, Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, the Chargers’ Justin Herbert and the Eagles’ Jaylen Hurts.

But this time, the answers carried more weight because an active seven-time Pro Bowl player was involved in the discussion.

Cameron Jordan, the Saints defensive end and member of the NFL’s 2010 All-Decade team, was asked which of these third-year quarterbacks is ready to take the biggest jump. Jordan said it’s Tagovailoa, because of the impression he left in Miami’s Monday Night victory against the Saints in Week 16 last season.

“After playing Tua, [it’s Tua] because he has more room to grow,” Jordan said. “He’s poised. He doesn’t get rattled. After playing Justin [Herbert], you can hit Justin. He gets a little rattled after you start sticking him early. Tua stays calm. He has that demeanor about him. He’s been hurt more, so he has so much more room to grow.”

ESPN’s Bart Scott, the former NFL linebacker, answered the question this way: “It has to be Tua. He’s the one with the lowest floor. He has the most ground to catch. Herbert already has been a Pro Bowler. Burrow is a top five quarterback already.”

But Scott said if Tagovailoa doesn’t play well this season, “he’ll be Sam Darnold, looking for a job and being a backup. He can’t be going down with these check down Charlies. He’s got to push the ball down the field.”

But the OL coach went back to asst. OL coach. He was only a coach for 4 years before Flores promoted him to OL coach after firing everyone else. LOL

None of the guys we drafted on the OL were over drafted. They were all drafted where they were projected to go. We’re not the only team that struggles with OL. There are only a hand full of teams that you can say they have a really good OL. And how many of them are made up of rookies and 2nd year players?

I think Grier and Flores did not handle the OL well but I can’t destroy Grier for all of it. The coaching situation had no continuity on offense all three years. After further review maybe Flores spent too much time on defense and not enough on offense.

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Deiter actually played pretty well last year but he got hurt early on and missed 9 games. We played 4 different centers last year and that’s not a good thing for continuity. • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah it can, they demoted our OL coach, so maybe he just wasn’t ready, retaining him doesn’t say anything about the players

It could be the players, but one doesn’t assume the other

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You asked me how can you count on that? If the new coaches didn’t see potential we probably would have done more in FA. There is still the draft and June 1st cuts to see if we’re still looking to upgrade with one or two guys.

The other day Brian Baldinger was talking OL in general in the draft and he said most rookies coming from college have a lot to learn at the next level. Asst. GM Marvin Allen in the video I posted the other day reiterated that.

Now those young guys have more experience and we added two experienced guys to the group so it should be better even if they’re not great. We’re going to find out if they can play better.

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, maybe Lemuel Jeanpierre is good coaching players individually on fundamentals but was over his head leading the entire group.

Since 2019 what was our identity on offense? What was our bread and butter? We always seemed to be trying to figure it out. I think that was Flores’ biggest mistake as HC outside of all the other stuff. He had no plan on offense – a different OC and OL coach every friggin year. With a lot of young players during a rebuild. Then injuries played a role in it. He did a nice job on defense but that’s not enough.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

HC McDaniel and his staff OC Smith, TE Embree, OL Applebaum, QB Bevell, RB Studesville and WR Welker need to get it done as coaches with the talent we have offense.

We retained the system on defense with the DC in Boyer and most of the personnel. That’s a direction with it being built over 3 years and now in its 4th season. Coach McD has to build that continuity on offense and create an identity. He’s said his goal is not to only win games, but to create an identity of what Miami Dolphins football is about. We totally rebuilt the offense from the get go based on speed. Now it’s go time!!!

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I really do believe McD has the goods…is he ready. If he is, oh my.

I need to smoke more weed…lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McD was hired because of his reputation on offense. Coaches and players he has worked with gush over him. 49ers coaches and players joined him in Miami.

It’s not the same as when Philbin and Gase came from Favre, Rodgers and Peyton. The 49ers offense was not prominent about any position. It seems more structural in an engineering type way. Step in and do your job but everyone is fast.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The concept is simple….doing what you’re saying you’re going to do is another.

All of them say it, adhere to the concept, i.e. develop/design/strategize/teach to your strengths….

I can’t remember when we did that last….lol

Except Flores was never detailed. He said stuff like, we want play as a team and get better. I get it! Talk is cheap. If you have good coaches on offense with the personnel we have, we better be good. We have plenty of talent to compete and score points with the best in the league. Our defense is also a good group. Everyone needs good STs. We’re always in the mix there. It’s like a bullpen in baseball. Year to year.

That leaves us with ILB/MLB (IMO) as the most important position to address… whether it be via the Draft or (less likely) FA.

We can buy JC Tretter if need be, so I don’t feel the Center position is ‘necessary’ via the Draft, at least not as our first selection. Seems our coaches and Grier are still high on Deiter, so that’s a plus.

Krishna, I’ll toke with ya, lol. If our first series on offense in the 2022 season is a 3 and out our fan base will want to fire everyone. Then when the game is tied 7-7 2nd quarter we’ll all get somewhat cozy. 4th quarter down 24-21 is right out! We can’t handle shit like that. LOL

IF, I say IF we were to trade up for somebody in the Draft this year, who would you prefer it to be, and without giving up either of our two 1st rounders next year? Y’all know the drill… copy and paste.

Leo Chenal would definitely be my choice. We need a stud upgrade at ILB at some point in time. Nows the time where he can learn the defense and learn from Roberts & Co. and be ready to start next year when these guys will be gone again after their 1 year contracts are up.

Jerome Baker became the first Dolphins player since at least 2000 to total at least 400 tackles in the first four seasons of his career. His 403 tackles are seventh and his 17.0 sacks are sixth among all players in his 2018 draft class.
