Dolphins will wait until Day 2 of Draft

I’ve made some statements indicating I’d be in favor of the Dolphins trading future picks and/or players to move up into RD 1 tonight, in which currently we don’t own any picks. Actually, we have quite a wait, as we all sit and watch players come off the board to other teams, sometimes division rivals. We’ve made our moves in free agency and trades, especially the big trade acquiring WR Tyreek Hill from the Chiefs for multiple draft picks, our 1st, 2nd and 4th RD picks this year, along with 4th and 6th in 2023. That leaves us with a late 3rd RD pick (#102), a 4th RD pick (#120), and two 7th RD picks (#224 and #247). Oddly enough, this will be the first time I won’t be watching Day 1 of the NFL Draft because Opening Day in my softball league for my team begins tonight at 8PM. Our game was rained out last Tuesday. I’m taking this as a sign from the universe that there’s no need to watch tonight, the Dolphins will be idle.

Well, it sure would be fun to make a move to get back into RD1 though, wouldn’t it? Say, somewhere around pick 20-25, or maybe a bit later if a certain OC slipped a bit further than expected, and the Dolphins pounced and scooped up Tyler Linderbaum. Sure, they LOOOOOOVE Michael Deiter and all 31 other teams have been harassing the Dolphins to acquire his services. Yeah, uh-huh. Just because I don’t believe that, that doesn’t mean Michael Deiter won’t be our C this season. Why should I believe they love him so much? I don’t recall him being dominant, ever, and even when he had the starting job this past season, he only made it through 8 games. We don’t know how Linderbaum would fare as a pro, but he’s exactly what the Dolphins are looking for, a powerful, nimble, quick footed move center who could probably start day one. Hey, maybe if Deiter is so wanted, we could package him to move up to take our center for the next decade.

Let’s face it Dolphins fans, most drafts we grit our teeth in anger when they don’t take the guys we like, but for the first 2 rounds, we KNOW they won’t be taking guys we like because we have no picks. Will that make it easier? Probably not, we’ll be angry watching our favorite prospects go elsewhere as per usghe, but at least for rounds 1 and 2 it should be easier. Is it possible that we move up in this draft? Of course it is, I can’t make it any clearer that our window in which we will be competitive in has been accelerated. We can be competitive NOW. I see no reason not to move future assets to acquire help for this season and beyond. Picks are assets, but players that help you win NOW are better than future assets. I know so many of you want those multiple picks for the “JUST IN CASE TUA SUCKS” scenario. Tua doesn’t suck. I’m not worried about that in the least. To me, the question is, is there a player that we can acquire in RD 1 that makes us better immediately and the next 5 years? If Tyler Linderbaum fits those parameters, then go ahead, make the trade and get him. I should be home by 10:30PM, just make sure you don’t do it until then.

    Where is BBM?

  17. Rockphin says:

Does Thompson get put on the PS once season starts or do they carry 3 QB’s? We have a pretty good back up as it is!

What do we do with Skyler?

  21. steveccnv says:

    Skyler = Doughty

Weenie arms, in comparison Tua has a canon

  22. Tim Knight says:

Interesting draft! I had a feeling it would be a few guys none of us were talking about.

Alright…1 more month until the June 1 cuts.

  25. Wyoming85 says:

  26. sb7mvp says:

    Let’s grab some good UDFAs

  27. Tim Knight says:

Ezukanma is a thickly built WR like Deebo and he’s physical like him with YAC and he runs the ball too. He was a Wes Welker favorite. Grier said they worked him out privately and they knew him pretty well. McDaniel said he fits what they’re looking for in WRs.

  28. steveccnv says:

To the Q of Skylar on PS or as 3rd QB?

    Should’ve read cut or PS

  29. Ken says:

    LOL at drafting Skylar Thompson

  30. Ken says:

    Disappointing no OL

  31. New Age says:

Not a very impressive draft but knew it coming in. Only place I feel we might still have issues is OL but we’ll see how the coaching does. I’m betting we’ll see more improvement in the OL than we’ve seen in at least 4-5 years. Coaching matters.

    • steveccnv says:

My thoughts on the OL is it absolutely will be better than last year for starters. How much we’ll have to see, but built into the system is everyone blocks, so that alone should help the OL

We have an O coaching staff that was brought in to improve the OL first and foremost, with the 2 new FAs the left side of the line is 100% better

All the things I listed should get us up to at least an average OL, which would be a good start and enough to get us into the playoffs this year

Also the weapons we brought in should be enough for a much improved O, by itself, adding it to the rest of the changes I’m not even concerned in the least about what our overall OL play will be this year

Not sure anyone that was available when we drafted would even crack the starting lineup, so why should I care, that we didn’t draft OL?

  32. steveccnv says:

Interesting that MM said, Welker worked out Ezukanma and liked what he saw, didn’t know Wes how that much power

    • Tim Knight says:

He’s also from Welker’s alma mater. He knew about way before that.

      • steveccnv says:

Kind of what I’m talking about, so you give a guy with a build in bias maybe more power than he should have, not sure that’s smart

      • Tim Knight says:

That sort of thing happens all the time. Guys know guys in the football world and pass it on. Welker didn’t make the final call, he just talked him up.

  33. Tim Knight says:

I think Tindall and Ezukanma make the team. Goode will compete as an OLB/Edge. Don’t know what to think of Thompson other than a camp arm and take a look.

    • steveccnv says:

Not many teams draft guys in the 3rd and 4th round, that don’t make the initial team, Ravens may challenge that this year, but when those are your 1st 2 picks it’s not likely thay don’t make it.

Thompson might be a bit of a project, that they might try to get a draft pick for later.

Anyone’s guess is as goode as mine on our 224th pick

Would need to see more of him to know, if he has an NFL arm

  34. steveccnv says:

    Alec Lindstrom signed with Dallas

  35. bookman11 says:

Ken, you and OD may be disappointed, but many of us are not. We think we have the OL we neef

    • bookman11 says:

      Need

    • Ken says:

I see no reason to have optimism in Dieter, Jackson or Eichenberg. Expecting them to magically improve is not realistic. I don’t like entrusting them without competition is dangerous

      • Tim Knight says:

McDaniel said he and the coaches feel good about the OL group especially after working with them on the field recently. It’s a new system, new coaches and they’re still young. We shall see.

      • Ken says:

Of course they say the feel good. Doesn’t negate the fact they were horrible last year

  36. steveccnv says:

It’s good to be king, but it isn’t bad right now to be a Fins fan

  37. pheloniusphish says:

    UDFA so far

Reported signing – Blaise Andries, OL, Minnesota (via Barry Jackson)

    * Reported signing – Kellen Diesch, OL, Arizona State (via Barry Jackson)

    * Reported signing – Zaquandre White, RB, South Carolina (via Alex Martin)

    * Reported signing – Jordan Williams, DL, Virginia Tech (via Virginia Tech Football)

  38. Tim Knight says:

Ken, as a group the OL was bad, but that doesn’t mean individually they can’t play. Maybe they were not coached well. Flores did have a new OC and OL coach every year. He did a bad job with continuity on offense. You can’t ignore that. If Grier and McDaniel and his staff didn’t feel good about them, they would have done more to address it don’t you think? It’s not just about Deiter, Jackson and Eichenberg either. Maybe they like other guys too. Armstead and Williams were brought in as well. We shall see. They know more about it then we do.

    • Ken says:

Sorry I just don’t share the optimism about those guys. Jackson has been here 2 years and Dieter 3 we would have seen something more by now and while Eichenberg was here only 1 year he was atrocious last year. Worst of the historically bad OL

    • steveccnv says:

Jackson wasn’t horrible his rookie year, having a rookie next to him and whatever that was from the OL coaches, and the cocos last year didn’t work

This year Jackson will have Hunt, still think Eichenberg will beat out Jackson

You don’t need 5 all pros to have a decent OL, just their opinion though Tim, we won’t get into trading up in comparison

  39. Randy says:

I think it’s absolutely fair to have concerns or doubts about this team in one respect or another. I’m cautiously optimistic, but I am also completely on the bus where they still have to prove it to me before I’m taking a big bite. This is the season of Hope…so it’s all good, but I wanna see wins and playoff appearances. It’s all just fan opinion, so it’s not like any of it matters. Lol
    ***
On the OL, I think we should have 3 above average pieces out of 5. That’s actually a good thing. That raises the level of the whole OL alone. I do believe they can find 2 serviceable guys for the other 2 positions…and you can work with that…and still try to improve personnel. Still, I need to see it come together before I’m buying in. To each their own. I’m looking forward to seeing what these guys can do in the next couple years. Decent start so far.

    • Tim Knight says:

Yeah we need to see it especially because we have not seen the new team in a new system with new coaches on offense.

    • steveccnv says:

We also had 3 above avg OL when Ajayi was running wild, mentioned last week it’s good enough, especially if Hunt moves back to RT

  40. bailbondmike says:

Man, I got totally slammed at work and missed 6th and 7th round.

WHAT!!!! Who was that pick at 247??? LOL

    There’s our PS QB.

  41. Wyoming85 says:

  42. Wyoming85 says:

    RIP Naomi Judd

  43. Randy says:

Huh, interesting, Ty Clary was more of a guard to me. I can see why they might project him at C in the pros.

  44. bookman11 says:

Ken, you state your concerns as if they are fact, but ultimately we will find out. Many of us think moves were made to address the OL situation. I believe you and OD are wrong. We will see, just don’t think it is as absolute as you believe

  45. bailbondmike says:

Gotta post it one more time for ya. He could be our future backup/Taysom Hill. Bridgewater is only signed for 1 year. Yeah, doesn’t have a cannon but apparently someone on the staff sees what I see.

    • steveccnv says:

Watched his game tape against Baylor again and saw something I missed the first time, but it was on my phone, so will need to see it again on a larger screen

  46. steveccnv says:

Watching Skylar vs LSU, he’s special in the pocket presence dept. reminds me a little of Jason Allen

  47. steveccnv says:

KSU OL is bad, he’s running for his life a lot

They look like a bad team with a pretty good QB and RB

His ball placement isn’t close to Tua, but he seems to get it done, think he has some form of IT

Will need to see him in PS, to know if he has a chance in NFL

Think if he had Bridgewater’s experience he’d be a better QB, than Teddy

    • bailbondmike says:

      has some form of IT
      ———-
I agree 100%. That is why I liked him as a late round prospect. I am surprised he did not get picked a round or 2 higher with this weak QB class.

  48. The Flying Pig says:

My take away from the draft is that the Dolphins are very confident in their current roster
The only player I can see making an impact in 22 is Tindall
Other than that those are pretty much developmental picks

Not sure if White or Spiller didn’t go off the bird just before we picked on the 4th, they wouldn’t have been a Dolphin

I would have believed a RB there in the 4th maybe had a shot to make an impact

no center and no RB indicates to me the Dolphins feel they are ready to go

Adding depth is always a good thing, so I like their strategy. I just how we are ready in 22

    Let’s go 🐬

  49. naplesfan2010 says:

Skylar is dynamic and tough. I hope he makes it.

  50. naplesfan2010 says:

I’m feeling the big let down.
I mean I knew we only had 4 picks left and the first was 102, but it still feels like, “That’s it?
    That’s all we got?”

    • steveccnv says:

Just think of it this way, Skylar and Goode may be on the PS, that leaves only 2 rookies on the 53, that need to get acclimated to NFL

When the season starts we’ll be ready to go, no more of this 0-7, 1-3, 1-7 BS to start the season

Listening to Phinsiders Paul loves Zaquandre White, RB, South Carolina UDFA, he has a shot to make it too, but an RB doesn’t need much to be ready

  51. steveccnv says:

If we drafted 7 guys I’d be like where will they find a roster spot?

Ravens with 10 picks in the first 4 rds, I’d expect them to have roster spots for most of those guys else why trade to acquire that many (6) 4th rounders?

20% of their roster would be rookies, would think the early season rookie mistakes would be running rampant

  52. steveccnv says:

Sure you need rookies for future success, but we’ve had so many picks recently and will again next year, so we’ll be fine

  53. sb7mvp says:

It wasn’t the Z White people wanted, but it might be the Z White that we need. He looks like he’ll fit the system well. I like that he’s shifty, but he can also truck stick and stiff arm people.

  54. Mike E. says:

    NEW BLOG UP!!!

  55. sb7mvp says:

Grier said in his post draft interview that they had a RB they were targeting, but he was drafted by someone else and said McDaniel fell out of his chair when it happened. I’m betting it was James Cook who went to Buffalo, but it could have been White or Spiller who went right before our second pick.
