Dolphins will wait until Day 2 of Draft

I’ve made some statements indicating I’d be in favor of the Dolphins trading future picks and/or players to move up into RD 1 tonight, in which currently we don’t own any picks. Actually, we have quite a wait, as we all sit and watch players come off the board to other teams, sometimes division rivals. We’ve made our moves in free agency and trades, especially the big trade acquiring WR Tyreek Hill from the Chiefs for multiple draft picks, our 1st, 2nd and 4th RD picks this year, along with 4th and 6th in 2023. That leaves us with a late 3rd RD pick (#102), a 4th RD pick (#120), and two 7th RD picks (#224 and #247). Oddly enough, this will be the first time I won’t be watching Day 1 of the NFL Draft because Opening Day in my softball league for my team begins tonight at 8PM. Our game was rained out last Tuesday. I’m taking this as a sign from the universe that there’s no need to watch tonight, the Dolphins will be idle.

Well, it sure would be fun to make a move to get back into RD1 though, wouldn’t it? Say, somewhere around pick 20-25, or maybe a bit later if a certain OC slipped a bit further than expected, and the Dolphins pounced and scooped up Tyler Linderbaum. Sure, they LOOOOOOVE Michael Deiter and all 31 other teams have been harassing the Dolphins to acquire his services. Yeah, uh-huh. Just because I don’t believe that, that doesn’t mean Michael Deiter won’t be our C this season. Why should I believe they love him so much? I don’t recall him being dominant, ever, and even when he had the starting job this past season, he only made it through 8 games. We don’t know how Linderbaum would fare as a pro, but he’s exactly what the Dolphins are looking for, a powerful, nimble, quick footed move center who could probably start day one. Hey, maybe if Deiter is so wanted, we could package him to move up to take our center for the next decade.

Let’s face it Dolphins fans, most drafts we grit our teeth in anger when they don’t take the guys we like, but for the first 2 rounds, we KNOW they won’t be taking guys we like because we have no picks. Will that make it easier? Probably not, we’ll be angry watching our favorite prospects go elsewhere as per usghe, but at least for rounds 1 and 2 it should be easier. Is it possible that we move up in this draft? Of course it is, I can’t make it any clearer that our window in which we will be competitive in has been accelerated. We can be competitive NOW. I see no reason not to move future assets to acquire help for this season and beyond. Picks are assets, but players that help you win NOW are better than future assets. I know so many of you want those multiple picks for the “JUST IN CASE TUA SUCKS” scenario. Tua doesn’t suck. I’m not worried about that in the least. To me, the question is, is there a player that we can acquire in RD 1 that makes us better immediately and the next 5 years? If Tyler Linderbaum fits those parameters, then go ahead, make the trade and get him. I should be home by 10:30PM, just make sure you don’t do it until then.

So I apparently fell asleep sometime in the middle of the draft. Such an odd first round as opposed to previous years. Usually there’s at least 3 teams overpaying for a QB. Trades galore. I see the Ravens grab guys we like again. Steelers do that stuff too. Not that we had a chance without a pick, I just don’t like good players going to those teams. I probably hate those two teams more than the Bills or Pats.

  2. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m fine with that first round. I don’t think any of our main rivals got a guy who will beat us. It really is a weak Round One class. The #1 pick at least should be projectable as a HoF talent, but he’s not. None of the top picks are really.

  3. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think Pickett benefitted from a down year by almost the whole ACC. I think stealers won’t see a great career from him.

  4. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tennessee swapped Brown for Burks. Meh Burks is way more manageable than Brown.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I like a Burks a lot as a prospect
      But Brown is established
      So there’s risk

But Brown was demanding a new contract, so they had to make a move and that’s as clean as a move as I’ve ever seen an organization make

That said, they are trying to make a run and need to get better not just replace players

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Patsies pick doesn’t impress me. For a 50 50 chance at NFL success at Center I’d prefer Fortner. Chattanooga is no big time proving ground.

  6. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Bills got a good corner but not as good as the one they lost.

  7. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So as of this moment, we lost pick 29 Strange to get Hill. I’m good with that so far.

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

There are still lots of players I like left.

  9. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I forgot to watch Tyreek Hill highlights last night

  10. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

How does the 102 pick translate to a 3rd…lots of you on here have been saying that.

    32 teams x 3 rounds = 96 picks…..I’m confused….lol

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Houston took Green with our 15th. He’ll be a good not great OG.

  12. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Do we even pick today?

  13. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Krish your math is correct, but 102 is officially a third round pick.

  14. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Prospects left I’d trade up for are EDGE Boye Mafe, DE Logan Hall, ILB Leo Chenal, ILB Channing Tindall, and that’s it. And not for a 2023 first rounder either.
There are others I like, but not in a trade up.

  15. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jets had a great draft for their GM, let’s see if their coach uses those guys properly

  16. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

    You go Detroit!

Round 1 (No. 2 overall) – Aidan Hutchinson, DE, Michigan:

Round 1 (12, from Vikings) – Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Good morning all! First draft I missed the entire first round. Sort of. I did see picks 24-30, but that was it.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – Just curious – Does it not bother you that Chenal is not a coverage LB at all? I feel like he’s the same kind of player Elandon Roberts is, no?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know I am not Naples, but, for me, not so much as an ILB. He does well dropping into zone coverage but that is not really us. I think the difference is he is hard to block at his monstrous size and very good at blitzing. I think he would be an upgrade to Roberts.

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I fell asleep watching last night also. I spent most of the day out in the sun and got wore out.

I have to say the 2 big winners were both NY teams. G-men got, IMO, the 2 best at their positions. The Jets got some serious talent and studs at every pick plus they have picks #35 and #38 in the top of the 2nd round

Jets will come away with the best draft haul of any team this year. They have 7 more picks between rounds 2 and 5.

Who cares? Well, their coach is from the same coaching tree. They will be nabbing players who fit for us on offense.

That is why the signed LG Tomlinson. That is why they just drafted WR Garrett Wilson who is Deebo like.

If they come away with Nakobe Dean and Kenneth Walker today, I will be sick. lol

Only good news is they will all be rookies and may not have a big impact this year except for maybe the skill players.

  20. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Krishna, Compensatory picks start to fall in the 3rd round so it pushes the end of the 3rd round down. 32 x 3 = 96 then add in the comp picks toward the end of the round. There are 9 comp picks in the 3rd round so it will go to pick 105.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBM – The Jets have had a great draft so far, no doubt. You’re also right that it should continue as well. They might actually be better than the Pats this season if Salah can get these kids playing well early. We’ll be in that position next year, and we already upgraded pretty nicely in FA, so our division is going to be tough for a while.

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There is one player I would think worthy of trading up for and that would be Bernhard Raimann, OT, Central Michigan. I believe his position is RT also (could be wrong). He was projected as a possible late 1st rounder. If he is still there in middle of the second, he would be worth it.

For the remaining players, I would not trade up for them unless they fall to top of the 3rd round.

  23. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Not really surprised at who fell out of 1st round. Dean and Willis maybe but not surprised.

Only surprises for me were Pats reaching for Cole Strange and Packers not drafting a WR. Packers did add 2 very good players to their D but something tells me they may trade both their 2nd round picks (53 & 59) to move up into the 30’s and select WR Christian Watson.

  24. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Mike E … pls see BBM’s response for me above

  25. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

As for us picking today, I thought Krishna was making a hyperbole, like does he even lift?
    or something
along with his saying 102 is not in the third round.
Sorry I f’d up my joke back.

  26. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Wow, I have been tuned out because of the Hill trade. I didn’t realize that the Jet’s got 3 first round picks this year. How did they swing that?!? Did they trade a player? Who did they have that was worth it?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, I missed it also. They traded 35, 69 and 163 for 26 and 101. So they only gave up a mid 5th rounder and a swap of 3rd’s to move back into the 1st round.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And Jamal Adams to Seattle a while back

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Basically they took Sauce, garret wilson and jermaine Johnson

It’s exciting to add 3 young players but who knows how they develop
Even if they are good, they might be the next Jamal adams and demand off the team

  27. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hi Alain , who is your choice at 102? Do you see us trading back for more picks? Which player if they fell would you trade up for in round 2 or 3? If Araiza is there in round 4, should Miami pick him (he is a generational punter and a huge weapon)?

Hey Reza, lot of interesting questions in here, so I’ll attack them rapid-fire-style. First off, choice at 102 obviously is going to depend on who’s there. I’ll throw out Tariq Woolen, CB from UTSA, as a guy I’d love. He’s raw, but 6-4 corners with blazing speed don’t come around every day. I absolutely could see the Dolphins trading for more picks; in fact, I’d almost expect it. Player I’d trade up if they fell is kind of a tough question because I could be a wise guy and say somebody like Jameson Williams or Derek Stingley, who absolutely are sliding out of the first round.

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – it was a great move to trade back into RD 1 and get Jermaine Johnson. I think they really wanted him and didn’t give much at all to get him. I admit I cried a little when the fucking Ravens took my boy Linderbaum. lol

  29. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I have tickets to the draft tonight, its free you have to register though, but don’t think I’m going

Fight the traffic, then walk 2 miles, just to walk around at the event, then when are pick is announced go crazy like the rest of the idiots, that don’t know who the F the guy is that we picked

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Did you see Linderbaum’s highlight reel during the draft? The dude is running full speed downfield 20-30 yards and running over people. He’d be perfect in our blocking scheme. I would have been thrilled if we traded some assets to get him. I think he’s going to be a pro bowl guy for a decade or so.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No, didn’t see that, he fits us but not Ravens Mano y Mano style

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe the Ravens are changing it up. I actually agree with you that Linderbaum is not a power player, he’s a little too undersized to handle and move 330 pound DT’s and NT’s off the ball. He’s awesome at hitting a block and then moving to hit another block and so and so on.

  31. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – Can’t count on the Jets fucking it up. Douglas is an accomplished GM with a strong resume, and I like Salah too. I don’t think we can be complacent at all, I say just keep adding talent, talent that can help you right now. I can see the Jets passing the Pats if they continue drafting strong.

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m not sold on Saleh, he didn’t show much last year, except beating a couple of good teams, that were in a bad stretch of games

It would be like Jax beating us last year, then saying they beat a good Fins team, even though we were horrible when they beat us

Or us beating the 49ers 2 years ago

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They were a bit of a mess last season. Their rookie QB got hurt, and then they actually got a game for the ages from their backup Mike White. They had no expectations last season, they had a rookie HC with not much talent. After this draft, they will be better, and they also improved in FA, with Tomlinson and McDermott, picking up the 2 TE’s Uzomah and Kroft, re-signing Berrios and getting one of the best K’s in the NFL, Greg the Leg

  33. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I liked Cole Strange for us possibly with our first pick. Shocked the Patriots took him that early. I mean, in the end it doesn’t matter, you get your guy if you think he’s special, but that sure seemed early to grab him in the 1st.

    @CodyJBenjamin
The #Dolphins traded five picks (including a first, second and two fourths) to pay Tyreek Hill, 28, an average of $30M per year.

The #Eagles traded two picks (a first and third) to pay A.J. Brown, 24, an average of $25M per year.

What an FN hack, the number of picks mean nothing it’s their value that counts, and avg salary also means nothing, Hill’s last year is a void year, so the $52M won’t be paid

I just like to watch the games and hope we put a good/competitive team on the field.

  47. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not sure how I feel about Nakobe, he plays fast, more like a DB, than an LB, can rush the passer quickly thru open gaps, but RBs can block him and OL destroy him at times, seems very good in coverage, can react and run against rushing attack, can’t get off of blocks enough

If used properly he’d be great, but if not, not

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I feel like he would be a huge liability in our defense. We need guys that don’t get washed out on run plays and I can see him being that guy

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero were just talking about Nakobe Dean and they said there are a lot of injury concerns with him. He’s undersized to begin with so I’m not sure he’s a fit for us. He’d probably be best as WOLB in a traditional 4-3 defense.

  48. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t think I’ll ever go to the draft…. even if they hold it in Miami. They said 500k people were their last night. • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Correct about a new GM and HC, but it further demonstrates what a dumpster fire Mayock and Gruden were together. You’d think at least ONE of the aforementioned players would be good enough for a 5th-year extension by the new regime.

What a difference a year makes. In 2021 we took our 5th player (Hunter Long) with the 81st pick. This year our first won’t be till #102 absent a trade-up.

      That’s amazing.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hunter Long could still pan out too. He had some injuries that forced him to miss a lot of the offseason last year and he fell behind a deep TE group. Maybe this year he ups the competition which makes us a better team.

A big part of improving your team is when 2nd and 3rd year players make that jump. We’ve got a quite a few. A new coaching staff most likely sees some things differently with the players that were already here. We could see our roster change by 15 players this year.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Joe Thomas said if a guy like David Ojabo slips to us that could be a great value pick for us. He was a 1st round prospect but he suffered an Achilles injury. That could really pay off next year.

I feel that IF we were to trade up into the 2nd round, it would be with the Seahawks with their back-to-back 2nd rounders. We shall see…

  75. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We should be picking somewhere around 3 AM, yeah?

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

On paper the Jets are killing it. If projections are right, the AFC is going to be really competitive this year. Lots of teams getting better.

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Dang!! The very first pick got one of my trade up guys Logan Hall.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    LOL @ Mike

  79. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I said this will be frustrating, just sitting idle while all the players we like are taken.

  80. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Poor Johnnie

  81. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Watch the Ravens snatch up Nakobe Dean next.

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I want no part of Nakobe Dean

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There goes Ojabo to the Ravens.

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Do the Lions go Malik Willis here?

  85. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Saints taking their time, trading?

ROCKPHIN: Was that YOU pickin’ on 75 year old Larry Csonka up the page?? I don’t know exactly how old YOU are. But here’s the deal. You give Zonk the football and offer to stand in front of him and dare him to run you over!!!!!
    ————–
We’ll see who the “old man” is.

    • randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

PS: I happen to know that Csonka is exactly 21 days older than I am. And there is NO WAY I would stand in front of him carrying a football with a head of steam. NOT NOW. NOT EVER!!

  87. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

why do people trade up and take so long to announce their pick?

  88. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    wow. Thorton in the second.

  89. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rich Eisen saying DeVante Parker is known for his speed, eh? When, 7 years ago?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He had solid speed as a rookie but he’s known for body control and catching contested balls. It annoys me when these guys who get paid to do this can be so off about stuff.

That’s like saying Tyreek Hill is known for being a possession WR like Landry.

  90. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Do you think bellycheat did that on purpose? …traded up to use our pick to take a player to match the cheetah … why else would he trade up 4 spots? Was there going to be a run on cheetahs?

  91. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    The run is on again

  92. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Be interesting to look back on this in a few years. Pitt who has great luck drafting WR, gets jumped by NE who have shit luck with WR both take WR. Who will be better Pickens or Thornton

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Chiefs just landed my sleeper WR in Skyy Moore.

  94. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I was worried V. Jones, Jr. would be the pick.

Friday night tunes, this one’s going out to Randy

    Blues vs Wild…Murray vs Harrelson…Showdown

  96. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s funny some of you are getting annoyed that teams are getting prospects you like when we already knew we’re not in the 2nd round. Did you want us to trade back in 2-3 times? LOL

  97. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

What do you guys plan on drinking when we finally make our first pick?

  98. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Why is Trey McBride and his brother? dressed like Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg from the D*ck in a box video?

  99. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Wow I wanted 6 of the last 7 guys selected.
I have to keep telling myself that Tyreek does not have to be better than all 6 of them at the same time, because we would’ve only gotten one of those 6 if we still had our pick 50.
