Dolphins will wait until Day 2 of Draft

I’ve made some statements indicating I’d be in favor of the Dolphins trading future picks and/or players to move up into RD 1 tonight, in which currently we don’t own any picks. Actually, we have quite a wait, as we all sit and watch players come off the board to other teams, sometimes division rivals. We’ve made our moves in free agency and trades, especially the big trade acquiring WR Tyreek Hill from the Chiefs for multiple draft picks, our 1st, 2nd and 4th RD picks this year, along with 4th and 6th in 2023. That leaves us with a late 3rd RD pick (#102), a 4th RD pick (#120), and two 7th RD picks (#224 and #247). Oddly enough, this will be the first time I won’t be watching Day 1 of the NFL Draft because Opening Day in my softball league for my team begins tonight at 8PM. Our game was rained out last Tuesday. I’m taking this as a sign from the universe that there’s no need to watch tonight, the Dolphins will be idle.

Well, it sure would be fun to make a move to get back into RD1 though, wouldn’t it? Say, somewhere around pick 20-25, or maybe a bit later if a certain OC slipped a bit further than expected, and the Dolphins pounced and scooped up Tyler Linderbaum. Sure, they LOOOOOOVE Michael Deiter and all 31 other teams have been harassing the Dolphins to acquire his services. Yeah, uh-huh. Just because I don’t believe that, that doesn’t mean Michael Deiter won’t be our C this season. Why should I believe they love him so much? I don’t recall him being dominant, ever, and even when he had the starting job this past season, he only made it through 8 games. We don’t know how Linderbaum would fare as a pro, but he’s exactly what the Dolphins are looking for, a powerful, nimble, quick footed move center who could probably start day one. Hey, maybe if Deiter is so wanted, we could package him to move up to take our center for the next decade.

Let’s face it Dolphins fans, most drafts we grit our teeth in anger when they don’t take the guys we like, but for the first 2 rounds, we KNOW they won’t be taking guys we like because we have no picks. Will that make it easier? Probably not, we’ll be angry watching our favorite prospects go elsewhere as per usghe, but at least for rounds 1 and 2 it should be easier. Is it possible that we move up in this draft? Of course it is, I can’t make it any clearer that our window in which we will be competitive in has been accelerated. We can be competitive NOW. I see no reason not to move future assets to acquire help for this season and beyond. Picks are assets, but players that help you win NOW are better than future assets. I know so many of you want those multiple picks for the “JUST IN CASE TUA SUCKS” scenario. Tua doesn’t suck. I’m not worried about that in the least. To me, the question is, is there a player that we can acquire in RD 1 that makes us better immediately and the next 5 years? If Tyler Linderbaum fits those parameters, then go ahead, make the trade and get him. I should be home by 10:30PM, just make sure you don’t do it until then.

ATTENTION “TWICE THE THE;” WE just received a shipment from our internet company which includes a new modem, some connecting lines, plus another piece of equipment that I have no idea what it is or what it does.

WE’LL HAVE TO HIRE A GUY to install and instruct us as to how we use it fairly soon. I’ll try to let the “POWERS THAT BE” here when the change is made.

AND NO, KEN, the return address is NOT Steve Ross’s office at the Football Stadium!!

  2. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I agree with OD. We are short 2 more starting OL. We need a RT and OC. Jackson, Dieter and Eichenberg are not starting material

  3. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Tindall is a project with nice potential, but who isn’t anymore in the draft? As usual, the physical stuff is mostly there, but he’s got a lot of work to do. He’s almost like a big box safety. I am kind of excited about how they could use him against a guy like Josh Allen. Mobile QBs have killed us for years. This kid could be a counter to that, and even if he’s not ready right away to start you might still be able to use him in packages and situations. Not just spying a QB but putting pressure on them in the pocket from the inside.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      yep
I can’t wait to see him lay the wood to that wild QB near the lake border with Canada.
He’s fast and big, but Tindall is just as fast and hits hard.
      Tindall’s raw,
but he’s been making good grades in the classroom since high school, so I think he’ll learn fast what to do.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Pretty much said the same thing OD, and he needs to get acclimated to NFL

  4. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    OD?
jeez man what’s wrong with Hunt?
I think he’s good to go at RG.
And I’m not giving up on Austin Jackson just yet at RT. He WANTS to be good.
He’s a first rounder, from a major uni, and has really quick feet, plus he’s huge.
Maybe with some coaching he’ll emerge.
(He’ll be on his 3rd position and 3rd OL coach and 4th OC and 2nd HC … sheesh … if I had to learn that many bosses and systems that quickly, I’d be a bit shaky on knowing what they want me to do myself!)
I think Eich can be our 6th OL guy in case (GOD FORBID) Armstead goes down. He was just a rookie at LT last year and got better as the year went on.

  9. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Dieter has disappointed me mostly, but he played sorta okay last year. He still gets beat too often for my taste, but I do think he can be a low to mid grade starter. The new scheme may benefit him too. He’s had to shift positions and deal with injuries, so he may still have some room to improve. On a really good OL, I think he’d be a swing C/G.

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Zero desire to draft a RB. Target a couple in UDFA if you want. Isn’t our RB room already pretty full?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Agree, but Naples makes a good point, we don’t have a power back

Who knows 49ers seemed to have 1 flavor of RB too

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

dang there go 2 more of my guys.
Oh well, if they weren’t wanted by others, I’d think I was wrong to like them, so …

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Spiller is ok with me if McDaniel likes him, but there is something stiff about him to me.

  13. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Mostert and Chase Edmonds are so small they have been hurt a lot.
If they go down early, we are right back where we started with Gaskin and Ahmed,
with no Duke Johnson to rescue us this time.
So we’d have to go back and shop the sofa guys.

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Zach Tom still on the board. I think he is our pick.

Naples – with ya on White. We need some thunder in the backfield

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I love the person Zach Tom, but he’s a little soft-looking to me and a bit mild-mannered to be in the trenches. He is one of the smartest people in the draft however.

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Maybe the RB they draft is a FB!

Where do you guys like Tyler Allgeier will go?

  20. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Just finished some yard work, came in and we’re two picks away. Perfect!

On a side note, I’m hiring a damned landscaper, yard work isn’t nearly as fun as you start to age…

  21. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Funny because I was wondering if they’d draft Bo Melton from Rutgers, but I didn’t really think they’d draft a WR.

  29. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

WAY TO ADDRESS THE OFFENSIVE LINE!!

  33. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Strengths

    Big target and team captain.
Led his team in receiving in all three seasons.
Ability to widen release to avoid press punch.
Foot quickness to snap off slants and hitches.
Burst to pass and stack the cornerback downfield.
Squares to throw and shifts body to protect the catch.
High points catch with full extension and strong hands.
Bodies up defenders during contested catches.
Quick to grab it and go underneath.

    Weaknesses

Routes lack expected polish of a three-year starter.
Needs to sell the drive phase of his route.
Too upright into intermediate break points.
Needs to play with better speed variance.
    Inconsistent route adjustments to traffic.
Can be top-heavy rolling and drifting through route turns.
Easy catches can turn into focus drops.

They pick the 2nd best punter!

  37. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  48. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Erik Ezukanma? Yes, he’s another solid pick, but I’d have selected BBMike’s guy Zach Tom. I’m beginning to think a JC Tretter signing is imminent for us.

Love Ezukanma’s YAC, fight for the ball ability, and high-point catching… he’ll be solid. Now no more WRs, please!

  49. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m really hoping Tyler Allgeier lasts to the 7th round.

Piggy got his conch blower samurai

    Zuuuuuuuuuuu

  51. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Preston is more like Parker with limited Yac, Ezucanma can be a YAC machine

He may never draw the focus Waddle and Hill will, or have the ProBowl kind of season they’ve had, but around the goal line he’s a different kind of receiver we lacked

Should be a good possession type of receiver too

Was he our BPA and reason why he was selected or was he someone they targeted?

  52. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And there goes Tyler Allgeier, SMH.

  53. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We had too many of the same type of skill players, top 3 wrs and rbs seem to be from the same fast mold, needed a change of pace, large catch radius, break a tackle player

Sure we have Gesicki and Preston, but neither may be here in 2023

  54. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

M13, a player to watch this college season for next draft only because his last name is Ojulari. Not Aziz but his brother who is a 6’3 244 DE/Edge for LSU, BJ Ojulari. For now, he has a mid 1st round projection in the 2023 draft. I remember you were fond of Aziz.

  55. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There goes Woolen who the team had interest in

  56. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Even before this pick I think Gesicki was on notice, he doesn’t really fit the system, he needs to create his niche in it

Now after it, think it screams Gesicki insurance

  57. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We can now put the Deebo to Miami rumors to rest

  58. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Another skill player hanging by a thread is Ahmed, hard to see how he makes the roster

  59. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Is OC Cam Jurgens still on the board? Can’t remember

  60. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

DaRon Bland was another CB on our visit list.

I’m a bit surprised that Dohnovan West is still on the board.

  62. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Damone Clark to the Cowboys.

  63. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – how does this WR put Gesicki on notice? I don’t get that take at all. I mean you can say by tagging him he’s on notice, but drafting a WR who can’t do what he does doesn’t give me the impression they just put Gesicki on notice

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If he becomes a staple in our O, since he can mostly do everything Gesicki can do, it makes Gesicki expendable

Gesicki is already a 1 trick pony

  64. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Matt Araiza to the Bills… NOOOOOO!!!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That was a horrible pick by Bills, how often is he going to punt deep in his end?

I’d bet the large majority of them will be between the 40s, and he’s not good keeping them out of the EZ

They would’ve been better off with Haack

He’ll have some monster kicks from inside his 20 and Pete will rave about him, he’s the equivalent to Zeurlien

  65. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Darrian Beavers to the G-Men. They are having a very good draft.

  66. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Kevin Harris to the Patsies*… he was a RB I was hoping would last to us in the 7th round.

  67. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Dammit, there goes my guy Malcolm Rodriguez to the Lions.

  68. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not fans of the Ezukanma pick — Preston Williams, Lynn Bowden and Trent Sherfield.

Our dynamic duo is already locked up for years, Wilson is on a 3 year contract. That’s a lot of competition for a #4 slot with only an injury chance of getting to #3.

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Bowden could also be at risk

Do we really need 4 WRs plus Gesicki in the slot.

  70. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“I’m a versatile guy. I feel like I can fit in right where Jaylen Waddle — the way he can take the ball out of the backfield as well as be a deep threat down the field, but also just a versatile guy with RAC ability and YAC ability — yards after contact and run after the catch. You can put me anywhere on the field and I feel like I can help the team in any situation.”

    — Erik Ezukanma

  71. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Pretty sure Gesicki will be heavy into TE 101 this season. This boy is gonna learn how to block or it won’t take Erik Ezunkanma to hasten his exit

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      MM to the rookie class:

As you know our roster is loaded this year, playing time will be scarce

Best way to get on the field is STs, then learn as many packages/positions as you can

For O guys, everyone will be required to block, being good at it will get you on the field

  72. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

At this point in time, I’m looking at Isaih Pacheco, RB, Rutgers… Dohnovan West, C, Arizona State… and Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, DE, Notre Dame… in no particular order.
