AFC East – Post Draft Evaluation

A couple of weeks ago I broke down the AFC East, pre draft to get an idea how our Dolphins stacked up in what should be a very competitive AFC East division. I can tell you this, our rivals in this division caught up nicely by adding a significant amount of talent via the draft, especially the New York Jets. The Jets were loaded with draft capital, and parlayed that into a very nice draft haul. They came into the draft with two first round and two second round picks and then with a bold move traded back into round 1 to select their THIRD pick in the first round. The Bills had a decent draft adding a couple of prospects loved by some of our FMU brethren. The Patriots had an odd draft, to put it mildly. Our Dolphins were bereft of any high picks due to the trade for WR Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins chose not to trade by using any future draft capital, despite being armed well next year with two 1st round and two 2nd round picks. Our first selection this year was a very late, compensatory pick at #102.

NEW YORK JETS

As I alluded to, the Jets came into the draft with two picks in the top 10, #4 and #10. Their first pick reflects the necessity to be able to cover elite receivers as the AFC East has a few, with the Bills having Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis, the Dolphins having both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and the Patriots with DeVante Parker and Kendrick Bourne. The Jets took CB Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner at #4. Gardner, a brash, confident, lengthy CB out of Cincinnati didn’t allow a TD to a receiver last season. Well, welcome to the AFC East, where it will become commonplace. At #10, the Jets selected Ohio St. WR Garret Wilson. Two very strong picks so far and then a trade back into the first round at #26 netted the Jets the pass rusher they need in Florida St. DE Jermaine Johnson. The Jets first selection in RD 2 was another favorite here on FMU, RB Breece Hall. Four excellent picks should infuse this Jets with talent to compete. Robert Saleh must be pleased, as the Jets had already upgraded the O-line in free agency by adding OG Laken Tomlinson and a couple of TE’s in C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Conklin. If their 2nd year QB Zach Wilson can get on track with his new WR Garret Wilson, and the O-line can create holes for new RB Breece Hall, their offense will be better and the defense should improve as well with Sauce and Johnson. How quickly though will be the key.

BUFFALO BILLS

The Bills were not lost on the talent infusion at WR in the AFC East either, with the Dolphins adding Tyreek Hill and already having Jaylen Waddle, along with the Patriots getting DeVante Parker to the Jets drafting Garret Wilson. The Bills first pick was CB Kaiir Elam from Florida, another taller, fast CB. In RD 2, probably earlier than expected, the Bills took another FMU fave RB James Cook. That Bills offense just keeps adding pieces. In RD 6, the bills broke many hearts here as they snagged the best punter in the universe, Matt Araiza. The Bills were already a strong team and their draft should help them stay that way. As was pointed out here, does a team that scores over 28 PPG need the best punter?

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

I wouldn’t say Bill Belichick’s genius was ever considered to be present in his drafting ability, and this year’s draft was no exception. Their first pick at #29 in round 1 was Strange. Literally, the Patriots selected OG/C prospect Cole Strange of Tennessee-Chatanooga. To be fair, I liked Strange as a pick for our Dolphins, he’s a nimble footed, smart OL who can play any inside position on the line, although he has never actually played C and therefore has never snapped in gameplay. He was pretty much rated as a 3rd RD pick but Bill Belichick pulled the trigger and got his guy. In RD 2, possibly another pick in which he drafted a player expected to be taken later. The Patriots grabbed speedy WR Tyquan Thornton from Baylor, the tall lanky WR ran a blistering 4.28 40 at the combine. Nevertheless, he was expected to be a late 3rd round or 4th round pick. The Patriots added a CB who will likely be a ST’s player in the 4th RD.

MIAMI DOLPHINS

Our Dolphins, as previously mentioned didn’t have much draft capital left after the Tyreek Hill trade, but the Dolphins remained patient and stayed pat with they had. At pick #102, the Dolphins took Georgia LB Channing Tindall. Tindall is a very athletic LB who is a dept at blitzing which really fits this defensive style, and he has exceptional closing speed, which is really evident when you watch any reels available on the kid. He was a part time player on a very talented Georgia defense, with Nakobe Dean being the best known LB. With Elandon Roberts, a bit stockier fireplug of a LB in place, Tindall will most likely still be a part time player in ’22, but if he shows up quick, as Zach Thomas did back in ’96, perhaps he’ll be inside next to #55 Jerome Baker all season. The Dolphins second pick was Texas Tech WR Erik Ezukanma (Eh-zoo-comma). Ezukanma is a big WR similarly sized to DeVante Parker at 6’2 220, and displays some similar traits as an aggressive catcher of the football who will go up and get the football. Definitely nice value in RD 4. We used the first of remaining 7th RD picks on OLB/DE Cameron Goode from California. We need depth there but Goode will have a fight on his hands to make the 53. More than likely he’s a PS candidate at best. With our last pick, we took QB Skylar Thompson from Kansas St. The Dolphins currently have 4 QB’s, with Tua Tagovailoa, Teddy Bridgewater, Chris Streveler and now Skylar Thompson. With the injury histories of our top 2 QB’s, it’s not crazy to add some depth. Regardless, both QB’s will likely be on the PS.

So after the draft, my initial impression is the Jets easily improved the most after the draft. They were set up nicely to add lots of talent and GM Joe Douglas didn’t disappoint. We’ve seen teams improve quickly, think LA Rams with a young HC Sean McVay. Can HC Robert Saleh get this young squad to mesh together quickly as McVay did with the Rams? That remains to be seen, but on paper, the Jets improved the most. The Patriots seemed to tread water if you ask me, I don’t see this team making any great strides this season due to the talent infusion in ’22. They may even take a step back, although it’s hard to bet against Bill Belichick. The Bills added an important piece to the secondary if CB Kaiir Elam can show he’s NFL ready and a nice piece to their run game with RB James Cook. The Bills are already the class of the AFC east but they better have eyes in the back of their head. Our Dolphins did the heavy lifting in free agency and via the trade, adding LT Terron Armstead and WR Tyreek Hill. We also added slot WR Cedrick Wilson, added a couple of RB’s in Raheem Mostert and Chase Edmonds as well as a very good FB in Alec Ingold. Just as important, we basically brought back our entire defense intact by re-signing everyone whose contracts were up, a nice job by Grier and a promising sign that everyone wanted to come back. I think our division just got a lot more competitive, but the Bills are at the top until someone knocks them off. Hope it’s us!

Saw some game tape of Goode from one of the All Star games and he was anything but

Sure it’s an all star game, but it isn’t the Probowl, he was playing like it was, thought you were supposed to be playing to impress

    Maybe Ross colluded with him

He has played in the Patriots system, which Tua played in last year, and the Shanahan tree system at the Rams, which we’ll play this year. He won Super Bowls in both.

  4. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Just a thought, but maybe if SF had a bruiser back they wouldn’t have gone through running backs like paper plates and needed to insert a WR into the rotation.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Totally agree

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There’s no room for a bruiser back in that system, unless the RB is also a good RB and not just a short yardage specialist

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Maybe there’s semantics in the term brusier back. I’m not looking for a short yard specialist, but a guy who can take a decent workload and also be effective in those situations.

  5. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I don’t understand what went on with not re-signing Duke, but I don’t know how he wouldn’t have fit the system. Besides his skills, we could use a guy on offense that creates a spark when we need it. Maybe we won’t miss him at all.
I’m willing to give the staff the benefit of the doubt, but I definitely don’t like that he went to Buffalo.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

It just adds insult to injury.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Buffalo is so explosive, not sure how much more Duke adds to that, other than depth

For us we had nothing, so he was huge for us

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We still basically have nothing, so we still need him more. These guys that leave and go to rivals tend to show up big in our division games too. We don’t need them having another edge.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Then they draft James Cook!!!
      ?????
They must be unhappy with their RB room.
Their “starter” is Devin Singletary and recent draft pick of Zach Moss.
      And they sign Duke Johnson.
Seems like a lot but really only 4 guys.
Plus they carry a FB on the 53.
They did not get much as you’d think they would out of Devin and Zach.
But maybe that giant they have at QB is stealing RB reps.

yeah maybe it is semantics that misleads ppl …
I like to call the position Bruiser Back just cuz it sounds tough,
and I like me some smash mouth football when the situation calls for it.
an Inside zone runner w/ good vision and short burst good for 3-8 yards
a RB who can pass pro a little and still flare out into the flat and catch it.
Again just need that 3-8 yds.
Some ball control to keep from giving them the ball right back late in the half or 4th quarter.
a guy who can grind and keep that Wyoming buffalo guy on the bench.
Remember how Duke scored for us from inside the 5 ? We need that guy.

GOTTA HAND IT TO THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS TONIGHT. Down 2-0 in the 2nd Period (and being outplayed as if it was 5-0) they somehow found a way to come from behind and win this pivotal 5th game 4-3 against the Lightning in Toronto in what was by far the most exciting game of this series so far. Teams winning game 5 of a 7 game series go on to win that series 79% of the time, historically.
    ——————–
However, NONE OF THOSE TEAMS AMONG THAT 79% HAVE BEEN COMING OFF A 55-YEAR “DRY SPELL” which has seen them lose EVERY PLAYOFF SERIES they’ve been involved in during those 55 years!! Should the Lightning win Game 6 in Tampa later this week, the pressure will shift back to the Maple Leafs as they face off against history in game 7. And the Toronto press will have a field day reliving many of those game 7 disasters over the last 5 and one half decades.
    ——————-
OF COURSE there’s a very simple way for the Leafs to avoid the recounting of these past disasters. They need to go out AND WIN GAME SIX IN TAMPA AND END THIS SERIES IN 6 GAMES!!!
    ——————
I would not be shocked if Toronto did exactly that! But, in my heart, I think the odds are against them in Game 6. First, this proud and talented Bolts team is NOT going to go down without a supreme effort. And they’ll be backed by one of the NOISIEST and CRAZIEST group of FANATICS this side of the Canadian border!! It will be something this generation of Toronto players will have NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE!! Lightning fans will literally try to blow the roof off of Amalie Arena in the last hour before the puck-drop faceoff!!
    —————–
Lightning players know that if they can win game 6, the series will move back to Toronto for the climactic Game 7. Many of the staunchest Maple Leaf fans will be wondering “Will our boys let us down again like they’ve been doing for the last 55 years?” “Will the ghosts of past series lost come out of the closets again?”

Meanwhile, in the visitors locker, there will be no fear of Game 7. Lightning players have faced, and won, Game 7’s during their two consecutive years as Stanley Cup Champions. They KNOW they are perfectly capable of winning game 7’s and have NOTHING TO PROVE to their fans or themselves.

May the better team win this series.

Teams get to put requests in, such as we might ask for back to back games at SF and LAC, so we only have to go west once, or Belicheats favorite of playing at home on Thursday night

The guy who wrote the strength of schedule article kept saying that the schedule favored or hindered teams from getting to the Super Bowl, but actually it mainly affects teams getting to the playoffs. After that, having had a tough schedule is a slight advantage and teams with better records (Green Bay) often lose because they weren’t that good; they just played in crappy divisions. Or they weren’t as ready for top level competition, due to fewer games against top teams during the year.

They need their young weapons to be ready, their young QB to dramatically improve and their defense to stay healthy and be what they had in mind 2 years ago

I’m quite sure the speed of Tyreek Hill is shocking to see.
He’s the fastest WR in the league.
Tua’s going to need to calibrate how fast Tyreek can get down field.
And Tyreek needs to learn Tua, also.
It’s like a punter outkicking his coverage. What good does that do?
With no DB pressing Tyreek, he can just run free like a sprinter, no pads either.
It does look bad to see Tyreek having to stop and wait for the ball, but did he start lined up with Tua? Or was he already 20 yards away sorta loping along?
If he started lined up at the LOS, why did Tua wait that long to throw it?
Wasn’t Tyreek “open” at any time ? They’re not allowed yet to have defenders.
Also as Rock says, maybe this is a plant video. The practices are closed.

  59. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In the video of Tua’s passes 20+ yards the common thread is the safety never had a chance to make a play on the ball

Tua looks off the safety before he throws, because his looping style doesn’t really work otherwise, unless of course Albert Wson is wide open

They say, that if you can throw the deep out, you can make all the (traditional) throws, well Tua throws a really nice deep out

Would be nice, if he could throw it 70 yards,b especially with Waddle and Hill, but it’s not necessary, his accuracy and intangibles allow him to be good at the deep ball

He needs to be able to step into the throw any distance, else he gets into trouble with accuracy issues

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Your last sentence goes for most QBs. QBs use their legs to get velocity, not arm throwing. That’s what creates accuracy issues. Just like with pitchers.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Point was the big arm QBs like Mahomes and Allen can just flick it 40 or 50 yards without being set, Tua doesn’t have that luxury

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’ve seen Mahomes make plenty of bad throws flicking it

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nobody is just flicking it 40-50 yards accurately on a regular basis. That’s a fallacy. I’ve seen Mahomes and Allen completely miss the mark doing that. Because they do it from time to time everyone is impressed and that’s great. But most offenses live off of the short and intermediate passing game. All teams are trying to set up the deep passing game. You also need WRs who can take the top off of a defense. Some people act like we’re seeing some QBs throw it from the 30 into the endzone and that’s not the case.

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, it has nothing to do with me being a homer. I find the entire narrative about Tua ridiculous.

I know he doesn’t possess the strongest arm. But most of the game is not about that. QBs will lose more games being inaccurate than being able to throw it 70 yards.

I’m beyond tired of the Tua hate/disrespect. It’s just become the norm now, whether it’s the local idiots in the media or the guys all around the country. Everyone thinks Tua sucks and there’s really not one good reason to feel that way, though that doesn’t deter them. Hopefully he plays so well and then of course they will say they knew all along Tua would be good.
    —————–
    Mike E,

I am SO WITH YOU on this matter. It’s become blatantly ridiculous at this point, to the tune that it’s really beginning to piss me the funk off. I don’t usually get rattled by shit-stirrers talking nonsense about sports teams/players (there are more important things to get rattled by in the real world), but it sure seems to me that there are people out there ACTIVELY trying to sabotage Tua’s career: NOT COOL.

GUILTY are most of the media and half of our own clown fanbase. I still consider Tua to be a ‘kid’ at this point in his career, and people are outright trying to destroy his name, his honor, and his future. If Tua was QB for the bloody Patsies*, I’d still feel the same way about how he’s being targeted for marginalization.

Just wanted to let ya know that I share the exact same sentiment, Mike E. And surely, Brian Flores (funk him) didn’t do Tua any favors. 😡

Right on! We have a new HC who is all in on Tua and brought in assistant coaches that fit his vision and system. Tua is going to be in the right scheme that fits his skill set. 74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, we always talk about blind side protection being important and it is, but strong side is very important. Right handed QBs can’t have their natural waggle compromised by pressure on the right side. The same with left handed QBs in reverse. It’s not all about the blind side. There are ways to block that if you don’t have a one-on-one tackle on the blind side. But having a strong presence on the strong side is a big deal.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh, I hear ya, man! It’s just a matter of we don’t really have Tua’s blindside sewn up as many pundits would tell their listeners/followers to falsely believe. I mean, at this moment in time, we still don’t know who will be manning the RT position.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you know you’re up against a good blind side edge rusher, you adjust for that game. Not have a Jesse Davis not even make contact with the guy one-on-one. That’s a bad play. That’s why we were not an explosive offense. Couldn’t block enough and when in max pass pro, our talent wasn’t enough to make big plays. We had to be maximum efficient. It’s hard to do that. The opposing defense makes plays too.

We added speed and playmaking ability on offense in FA for a reason. 🙂

  75. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The 2 ints from the fest, Atlanta game, weren’t on Tua. The one in the EZ was a horrible route by Smythe and the one to Waddle was on Waddle, why was he moving away to the right, after sitting down, with a left handed QB, that’s under pressure? Because he was looking to get the ball and go, but went before the ball got there

  76. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think Tua is better when he has pressure around him, our first look was at Dilfer’s QB camp, he started way down and Dilfer told him to step up and kept pestering him, until he won best QB

The worst thing for him at this stage is for everyone to kiss his ass and tell him how great he’s doing

Tua is the least of my concerns this year, I have more concerns about the OL and the D

I think Tua will overcome the shortcomings of the OL and get it done, I mean we saw him against a 4 man rush last year, with all 4 guys getting pressure and he’s still completing passes, so I know with only 1 or 2 guys getting pressure he’ll avoid the pass rush

I think the D is going to have some growing pains to start the season

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why do you have concerns about the D? They are the most accomplished phase of the team without much change? The upside of some young players adding to the ascending vet players could take it to another level. I wouldn’t be surprised if we were the top defense at times during the season. What’s the weakness?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve concerns about the right side of our O-Line, although those concerns are somewhat tempered by Mike McDaniel’s mind and experience regarding the O-Line.

Man, I (obviously) hope you’re wrong about our D having growing pains to start the season. I’d like to think that by having the band back together, we can pick up where we let off by the end of last season. We shall see…

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There is this other narrative out there like Josh Boyer is some ho-hum coach who Flores developed. Not true. Boyer was with Belichcik before Flores. Then Flores brought him to Miami as secondary coach in 2019 and then DC in 20/21 because he thought he was a doofuss. Bad coaches don’t stick around with Belichick for over a decade like Boyer did. I’m tired of the negative vibe people try to surround this team with.

  77. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I hope y’all realize that Mike McDaniel has learned from one of the very best in the game regarding zone O-Line play: John Benton. And John Benton, of course, learned from the ‘godfather’ of the ZBS: Alex Gibbs (RIP).

So in a manner of speaking, Mike McDaniel is the football ‘grandson’ of Alex Gibbs. 😉

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

For those that didn’t already know, I have a football ‘man-crush’ on what Alex Gibbs did for the game of football regarding O-Line play.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know you didn’t want to say his name, but it’s Mike Shanahan who created the outside zone run game at its perfection, at least in our era.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Nah, I disagree. Shanahan may have been the HC, but it was Alex Gibbs who made Shanahan a winner at the end of the day. JMO

And even though I can’t stand Mike Shanahan, I’m still truthful enough to give him his props… he did very, very well in his day, to be sure. I just feel it was more Gibbs than Shanahan. Again, JMO.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I will say this, though… the Mike Shanahan-style has developed over the years and his kid Kyle is doing VERY well in the modern NFL. Being Mike McDaniel is a product of that system, I’m hella rooting for it to work, man!

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Really Steve, I asked you simple questions and you called me names. Now I have to go get over that because I’m so upset, lol. Just answer the question. Why are you concerned about the D?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Sorry you didn’t get the reference

My concern is we don’t know enough about Boyer, and he doesn’t have Flores in his back pocket to bail him out

We can’t really compare the beginning of last year to what’s to come in 2022, because Phillips and Holland are now stars on the cusp and Raekwon was out, but we did lose Coleman

Just feel Boyer isn’t a slam dunk

I have confidence in the players though, but they’re a finkle group, that needs the Ameoba D to reach full potential

How much of it will we see, will Biyer go rogue and run his own D?

We don’t know and why I have concerns, it’s not a huge concern, it’s just less than I have for Tua

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, no doubt Alex Gibbs is a great OL coach, but Mike Shanahan was an OC and HC for many years in college and the NFL. He had total control about how they’re going to play. There was a period of time in Denver when it didn’t matter who the RB was, they all rushed for over a 1,000 yards. It was a known thing. You can’t skip over the HC to a lesser position when he brings that with him everywhere he goes.

Mike McDaniel’s roots as a coach started with Mike Shanahan and then his son Kyle. That’s the history.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I know, man. Just can’t stand Shanadouche for the way he disrespected players (both his own and opponents), his coaching staffs, the game, and his way to win by any means necessary.

Shanadouche is one of the biggest assholes the NFL has ever witnessed, and that’s being KIND. It’s no wonder Dan Snyder was quick to hire him when his career was all but over… then Shanadouche just had to destroy RG3 before it was all said and done, because he’s a fuck head.

I was done with the punk after he burst multiple blood veins in his forehead for trying to argue to the refs that Chris Chambers was faking it and that the hit was legal, after being laid out by Kennoy Kennedy. Chambers looked to be paralyzed after that hit.

Shanadouche reminds me of Bill Romanowski.

  80. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

TK, I saw you asked steveccnv about concerns of D. I have concerns, too.

Staying pat, better yet adding a youthful player or two, is all well and good.

We still lost big against the Bills both times and D played a part in that and several losses last year.

We are not and cannot be a one-dimensional team to win.

D is just as much to blame for slow start as O.

Why are you ok with that?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  81. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Forget who the coach was but he was impressed with Tua’s movement skills in the pocket and accuracy. Said he had to improve in some areas but that would come with time. PFF Most Underrated player for each team:
    MIAMI DOLPHINS: DI Zach Sieler

When you’re a seventh-round draft pick out of Ferris State, you’re going to face an uphill battle for recognition in the NFL. Sieler hung around on the periphery of playing time for the Ravens before catching on in Miami and becoming a significant asset on their defensive line. He has played over 500 snaps in each of the past two seasons for the Dolphins, and his PFF grade jumped from 69.8 to 84.9, a figure good enough to rank inside the top 10 among interior linemen in 2021. Sieler is already a real success story as a late-round pick, and he may not even be done with his development.

PFF’s Most Logical destinations for remaining FAs
    C J.C. Tretter: Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins didn’t have much to work with in the draft, but none of their four draft picks went toward the offensive line. That leaves Michael Deiter — PFF’s 27th-highest-graded center in 2021 — stepping back into the starting center role with little competition.

Tretter would serve as a significant upgrade after earning seven consecutive 80.0-plus PFF pass-blocking grades. He would also walk into a Mike McDaniel offense that is fairly similar to the one Tretter has operated in with Cleveland the last few seasons. Both offenses ran outside zone at an above-average clip with a fair amount of power and counter mixed in.

WR Julio Jones: San Francisco 49ers
WR Jarvis Landry: New Orleans Saints

EDGE Melvin Ingram III: Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins make a second appearance on this list, as their $19.7 million in effective cap space ranks third in the NFL behind only the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers, per Over The Cap.

Ingram is best utilized in a rotational, pass-rush-heavy role at this stage of his career. Miami can use him in that capacity and rotate him in with Emmanuel Ogbah, Jaelan Phillips and Andrew Van Ginkel. Ingram’s 12.8% pressure rate is a top-25 mark at the position over the last three seasons — he can still offer value for a team like Miami looking to contend in a crowded AFC.

Boyer still has to prove he’s the man without Flores. Our younger players should be better and that should help, along with players returning. Remember when our D “wasn’t a concern” last year and we started out the season 1-7?

Our RB room looks more like a temp service – we are definitely not deep there, just like we weren’t deep at Wideout last year with all the misfit toys on our roster. It will hopefully be fine with scheme, but personnel wise is sketchy. I’m only counting on Edmonds and Gaskin at this point. Ahmed could surprise in this offense though. If Sony gives us anything more than M. Brown or Matt Breida did while they were here, then that’s a bonus.

O-line will have to come down to coaching and Armstead’s vet presence, but it’s still a concern at this point.

I’m not concerned about Tua. He’s been successful in one of the worst situations in football. There’s no doubt he should be better in an improved situation.

I have confidence in the players though, but they’re a finkle group, that needs the Ameoba D to reach full potential

The whole group? Wow, I just can’t imagine a whole group of Ray Finkles

    😉

I agree that the RB room is filled with ??s, but
Mostert is the fastest RB in the league, and he did thrive under our HC before.
As for Sony outshining M Brown and M Breida, well,
he was a 1st round pick out of national power Georgia.
Breida went undrafted out of small school Georgia Southern.
    Malcolm Brown also went undrafted.
    … …
Sony has averaged 1000 yards from scrimmage 3 of his 4 years.
He only ran 79 times the other year.

You’d have to go back to the one weird Ajayi year of 2016 and then back to Lamar Miller for one of his years to see the kind of production that Sony Michel has put up every year but the injury one.
No one else for the Dolphins is close until you go back to Reggie Bush in 2012 and 2011.

I have to agree with you that Sony might be the most likely to play the most downs and get the most touches by default due to talent and availability. Not sure if Mostert and Edmonds play every game this season. Mostert played 16 once but wasn’t the primary ballcarrier. Edmonds had 2 seasons where he played 16 games. The high yardage total on the ground for either back is 772 (Mostert in ’19)

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s why Michel was brought in

This system depends on having multiple backs, stars need not apply, system fit guys welcome

We don’t need all 4, including Gaskin, every game, but we will need them all for the season

Someone is out 1 week, it’s business as usual, next man up, with Ahmed maybe on the PS or even the UDFA too

Brown’s will be a jekyll and hyde type of team, with and without Watson

Scary with him, not so much without, thinking 8 game suspension to start season

When the schedule comes out expect to see us against them in the 2nd half and the cheats and Bills to get them in the 1st half, NFL seems to give us the finger often

Boyer is the major concern I have on D. Players not being schemed to max the potential of a solid team D or what it takes to be that.

    Injuries are next.

    Show me.

  96. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve seen Peyton and Brees succeed after their skills declined, once Tua gets closer to their level of understanding of the game he’ll peak, then 10+ years of vet play at QB is what I expect

Reason I brought up those 2 is to show what you need physically to be a franchise QB, the intangibles are more important, of course being a freak like Mahomes and Allen doesn’t hurt, but isn’t necessary
