What might the Dolphins O-line look like?

If Connor Williams will be a fixture at center, then the alignment I have up top may well be what we see to start the season. Or, perhaps they flip Liam Eichenberg and Austin Jackson, so Eichenberg plays RT with Jackson inside at LG. Or maybe Michael Deiter moves to one of the guard spots. My thought though is if we’re looking for the most athletic players in the outside zone blocking scheme, then these are the 5 players. Everything is fluid though, they haven’t even strapped on pads yet, but there’s no harm in speculating away, since at this point, it’s all we can do.

Connor Williams appears to like playing center though, and he’s far more athletic and capable of getting into second level blocks than his predecessor, Michael Deiter. One thing I can say is this is a BIG O-line. Athletic, but BIG. If it stays as currently constituted, with every linemen at 6’5 or taller, and at the moment, Eichenberg the lone member under 320 pounds. I loved watching Solomon Kindley here, he’s a mauler, but I don’t think he fits the scheme we’re running with now. I suppose he could drop some weight and gain some quickness, but he’s a small area operator for best results, and this offensive line will be all about movement, angles and getting a body on a body just long enough to get him out of the play. That doesn’t mean this O-line won’t be physical, aggressive, but it’s based on lots of motion from most of the line, not just one on one beating the person immediately in front of you, there’s a lot of teamwork.

The good thing from my perspective is no matter who plays where, our depth will be much better. I can’t say it enough times, no reason to give up on the young talented players we drafted in ’20 and ’21 like Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. These guys will be at the very least average NFL starters and with better coaching, more than that. If the line plays out like I put up on top then you have Deiter and Kindley as depth on the interior, and Coleman, Jones and Little on the outside with the possibility of still adding someone after June 1st cuts. I know there will always be some folks who think we didn’t do enough on the O-line, (you know who YOU are), but if you’re one of them, you’re simply discounting the aforementioned young players in Jackson and Eichenberg. These guys have to be given the opportunity to be good NFL players because they should be. Is it possible we pick up a veteran center like J.C. Tretter? Of course. We were extremely “comfortable” with Deiter not too long ago at C, and now it’s Williams. Adding Tretter just adds more talent and another starter and makes the line even better, but not sure if it’s in the cards, or the cap.

So there you have it, the donkies looking more like the Browns every day. There’s always a reason a team wants to trade their franchise QB. Wilson is reportedly looking for a 50m per year contract after this current deal is up after this season

I’m going on record right now, and you can forward this to the FO, if we bring in Lamar Jackson (or Tom Brady) to replace Tua after this season, no matter how Tua plays, I’m not a Dolphins fan ever again.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Jackson? Are you shitting me? The Ravens could offer me a straight up trade of Jackson for Tua right now, and I’d say no. I want a QB, not a RB playing QB.

I don’t think Jackson will ever win a SB with anyone as the starting QB. He’s just not a good enough passer. He’ll win a lot of regular season games until his legs start to go, but he’ll continue to lose in the playoffs.

It seems like McDaniel is umming because he is literally saying most of these things for the first time, being a first time HC and all. Plus, instead of just going with “well you wanna give 110%” cliches, he is actually answering the dang questions!!
This is dangerous territory. Being real makes one vulnerable.
So you can see the fast thinking he does so he A) does not give away his playbook or player evals
    and
    B) does not give any team (or Clickbaiter) bulletin board material.
But yet still answer the questions.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I couldn’t have said it better, my friend. I wasn’t trying to knock Coach McDaniel, just stating that he’s sometimes very difficult to listen to. We realize that he’s not trying to give away too much, he’s a first-time HC, and that he’s thinking on his feet/on the fly.

  34. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Wow I just watched that Jaelan Phillips vid above.
3 things jumped out at me.
    1) He made a lot of rookie mistakes. He made a mistake on almost every play. But his athletic ability often allowed him to recover from the mistake and still make a play.
    2) Christian Wilkins is a beast and very disruptive to the OL.
    3) On many plays there were multiple Dolphins players converging on the QB or RB. Many times the QB had that “Oh shit” look as there was a stampede of our players coming at him from every direction.
    4) Often when Phillips landed his punch, the OL literally got knocked backwards. These guys were usually 50-60 pounds heavier than Jaelan and still got lifted up on their toes or rocked back on their heels.
    5) After jolting a Big Ugly, Phillips reset his feet so fast he was still able to run down people 5 – 15 yards away, including some fast guys like Lamar.
    6) He’s just barely figured out there’s a ball out there. You could see him start to realize that he could take it away, slap it away, bat it down etc. This season I expect to see him start to anticipate, and he should get Sack/Fumbles and an INT or 2. And with his footspeed, those could be Pick 6s.

  62. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

For the NBA I’ll watch for 5 minutes from time to time, they last me between blm bs and the style of play and the fixed way games are called

As for the Kings vs Lakers series it was fixed, just like they fix every league these days including the NFL, Cheats getting every call for years was designed, Tampa being the TV rating king 2 years ago was setup to win the SB, the Rams last year were given the scheduling advantage Buffalo has this year, plus a few calls against SF and Cin, that changed those games

It’s no surprise to me how many nba and nhl series have gone 7 games, because of the officiating advantage they give

2 plays in nhl playoffs this year, that weren’t overturned by replay seemed to be called however they felt

Back to kings lakers, that series was bad as it gets, I remember pissed like never before with all the calls going the kings way earlier in the series and earlier in the famous cheat game, so when the lakers got some calls late, it was like about time

Did the officiating change who would’ve won? Who knows, but they sure gave some major advantaged to both teams

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The NBA ref Donahue mentioned in his interview how the leagues fixed games, before every playoff game they were briefed on how to officiate it, based on that he knew who was going to win, that’s why he bet, he had great odds on outcome

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Spin it however you want, but only one team was actually straight up given a win at the end of what would have been a series losing game.

So bad and so clearly obvious that every single person watching called foul, and was later confirmed by Donahue.

Only a Laker fan can quibble about anything else that happened that series. If it wasn’t for game 6 of that series, then that NBA playoff year isn’t synonymous with league cheating and manipulation, and is only known for the Kings winning the title.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

But the league got their game 7, the Kings choked bad in that game, and I haven’t watched basketball since.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You can spin it as you will, and start with the end of game 6 and not what took place earlier in that game and others in the series

I agree the end of game 6 was poorly officiated, but I’ve seen many other series since go the same way, with giving teams wins, they just didn’t make up for it with blatant bad calls at the end

Last night Lughtning score, didn’t have the sound on, so didn’t hear what was said, but Ranger goalie clearly had the puck under his right leg pad and moved that leg to back of the goal, they somehow ruled no goal

Colorado defender Makar takes a puck into O zone before teammate left the zone, they said it was a bs delayed offside, because he didn’t control the puck across the blue line until after teammate left zone, which isn’t the way that’s called, when a skater has relative control of puck skating in backwards, they can’t call it both ways

Point is you picked out an important, but Homer part of that series, where it didn’t go right for your team, and didn’t mention/notice the times your team benefitted to win other games in the series

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Anybody can claim calls didn’t go their way in any game or series, and homer fans that lose will always do that. That is standard sports fare.

What isn’t standard is game 6 of the 2002 nba western conference finals that was so blatant it’s the gold standard reference for ref manipulation.

The Kings were one bad luck play from going up 3-1 in the series. The opportunity was lucky, not Horry’s shot, I give him credit for nailing it, but if Vlad tips it any other direction it’s 3-1 Kings going back to Sacramento.

We still did enough to beat the Lakers in 6. The end. Everyone but a homer Lakers fan will say the same thing.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Your first sentence is correct, but I guess it doesn’t apply to you

Back in those days they’d make a bad call, someone would bitch about it and the next play was a makeup call

Game 6 had plenty of makeup calls in it, but Game 7s usually don’t, so once everything leveled out the Kings couldn’t match up and wilted like the doormats they’ve always been

Nothing you can say will make me think the Kings should’ve won that series, they weren’t the better team and they didn’t play well enough to win

Even so sometimes luck isn’t on your side, it wasn’t in that series

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

No the first sentence doesn’t apply to me in this case because I have actual proof, not cry baby stuff.

The ref came out and admitted the refs stole game 6. The world saw it and cried foul right after it happened and it’s still talked about 20 years later. You’ve even said it yourself…even though you are now trying to change some of the story in game 6 with “oh the calls went the Kings way earlier in the game”, smh.

The Kings had it to the point the refs had to be obvious about it. That says it ALL.

I don’t have to ‘spin’ any other game of the series because I know we won the games we won and lost the games we lost. You are the one that has to spin it with nebulous ‘bad calls the rest of the series’ BS. You’re a spoiled Laker fan that feels your team was the best and every call you didn’t get was a bad call.

The Kings wilted in game 7. I can and have admitted that. I think the game 6 theft took away their spirit, but we still should have taken it. Doesn’t change the fact game 6 was stolen, everyone saw it, not just homer Kings fans, which is all you have your claims.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And what is this -Kings couldn’t match up in game 7 once they stopped with the makeup calls- nonsense? Makes me think you didn’t even watch the game.

We missed FT after FT in the 4th quarter and still only lost by 6 with that margin coming in the last minute. We were one of the best FT shooting teams in the league and shot barely over 50% in that game and had something like 18 missed FTs with most of those misses in the 4th.

We lost game 7 because we choked, not because we couldn’t match up.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

fucking OT in game 7 no less. couldn’t match up, smh

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol, your conspiracy is better than mine, because other people said as much

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Right out of the Donghy story is this nugget kings fans don’t seem to want to admit

Usually forgotten, at least outside of Los Angeles, is how the Lakers were just as adamant at being wronged by late calls in what became a 92-91 Kings victory in Game 5 that gave Sacramento a 3-2 series edge.

  63. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

You only have to watch the last 3 minutes of any basketball game. The rest is meaningless.

Pretty much for 80% of them, so why sit thru the other 45 minutes of aggravation, while the officiating crew watches as the traveling Euro step is performed?

Steve, mine isn’t a conspiracy. The ref admitted it. Remember? It’s fact.

The Lakers shot 27 FTs IN THE 4TH QUARTER of game 6. They only made like one actual basket in like the last 7 minutes of the game (or something like that).

I’ve got all sorts of shit to back up my point of view.

You’re such a homer, you said the Kings couldn’t match up in game 7, a game that went OT and a game the Kings would have won handily if they hadn’t choked their FTs in the 4th.

Here’s an LA Times article talking about how the Kings EASILY could have won all 3 games in LA. They dominated game 3 and really should have won game 4. That’s an LA article, not a Sacto.

    https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2002-jun-03-sp-adande03-story.html

“This series, the Kings easily could have won all three games played at Staples Center. They dominated Game 3, came within a Robert Horry three-point basket in the last second of winning Game 4 and hung in Game 6 until the last minute despite some seriously home-cooked calls for the Lakers.”

    ▪ Michael Deiter: The Dolphins didn’t select a center in the draft and didn’t sign a veteran, keeping Deiter as the apparent front-runner for the starting spot. However, new signee Connor Williams confirmed the team plans to play him at center despite primarily playing left guard with the Dallas Cowboys. While the Dolphins media policy prohibits reporters from stating where players are lining up and whether it’s with the first team, second team, etc., the Miami Herald has previously reported that the expectation is Liam Eichenberg will start at left guard while Austin Jackson is expected to play right tackle. Dolphins coaches have already said Armstead will be the left tackle, so one can connect the pieces and see where that leaves Deiter. A 2019 third-round pick, Deiter is still likely to make the roster and provides positional versatility. But he faces an uphill battle to retain his role from 2021.
