Underrated – “And it feels so good”

The Dolphins defensive line is definitely an underrated unit in the NFL, by fans (including myself), by NFL talking heads, and of course by own local beat writers. It’s more than just the 3 guys pictured above, it’s the depth of the unit. Add in one of the best rotational DL in the NFL in Brandon Sieler, and backup NT John Jenkins and backup DE Adam Butler and it truly is a complete unit. It’s not the flashiest unit, and more than likely most NFL fans don’t know the front 3 pictured above by name. Emmanuel Ogbah has been about as steady as they come. He gets pressure so often, including 2 seasons ago when he had inadequate pressure coming from anywhere else. In 2020, Ogbah had 9 sacks and 21 QB hits, the team totaled 41 sacks. In 2021, Ogbah once again totaled 9 sacks and added 24 QB hits, the team though totaled 48 sacks. Christian Wilkins is an invisible elite player. Wilkins last season finished with 89 tackles (2nd on the team behind #55), 4.5 sacks and 13 QB hits. Raekwon Davis played injured most of last season but I have so much optimism that he will have a really nice season provided he stays healthy.

It’s not just the DL that’s underrated, it’s the entire defense. I’ll be the first to admit that I feel and have said so many times that for once I would like the defense to play like a championship defense and just shut down the other team, like our team gets shut down so often, especially when playing our own division rival Buffalo Bills. The problem is, the Bills just have a great offense, and Josh Allen gives them that running threat that we so often struggle with, while our own offense has been far from a juggernaut. The Bills averaged 28.5 PPG last season, good for 3rd in the NFL. No easy task to stop them, but 2 teams in particular shut them down, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bills were somewhat flat on opening day in Pittsburgh, only scoring 16 points. They won the TOP battle 33:17 – 26:43 and only lost the turnover battle 1-0. They had more yardage on the ground and especially in the air but couldn’t out the ball in the endzone. The 9-6 loss to the Jaguars was an aberration. Or was it? The jaguars stifled the run game, held both Singletary and Allen in check, sacked Allen 4 times and ran the ball themselves 27 times, for only 70 yards. They turned the Bills over 3 times. This is the kind of effort I’d love to see just once (or twice?) from our defense against the Bills.

OK, here’s the good news. I think there’s every reason to expect more from this defensive unit. This is a defense on the rise. Rookie OLB/DE Jaelan Phillips exploded toward the end of the season. He should be as good or better than that player was last season. We added an athletic inside LB in the draft, Channing Tindall who should help not only with Bills QB Josh Allen, but he can cover and will free up #55 Jerome Baker to create more havoc. AVG is still a player on the rise and I expect better things from as well this season. Did I mention we signed Melvin Ingram? Depth is better, Elandon Roberts is still a nice 1 or 2 down thumper in the middle, but Tindall gives them the speed and athleticism we’ve needed. We have the 2 veteran cover corners in Xavien Howard and Byron Jones. Both are excellent cover guys but X is clearly the playmaker, imposing his will on games so often. It’s not just INT’s, he creates forced fumbles and just has a knack for finding that football. The safeties are quite the trio, and underrated once again comes to mind. Jevon Holland had an excellent rookie season, and SS Brandon Jones seems to be becoming a full time starter and combines great tackling with strong blitzing abilities. Jones had 5 sacks last season and had the 3rd most tackles on the team, behind Wilkins and Baker.

Depth, depth, depth. Sieler, Jenkins, Butler. Ingram, Tindall, Eguavoen and Riley. Needham, Rowe, Igbinoghene. Is it possible we actually see the emergence of former 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene? He’s been showing up in camp, and it would be great for the talented young player to finally make it in the NFL. Nik Needham is one of my favorite Dolphins players, a guy who plays above his head all the time, max effort guy who does whatever the coaches ask. We basically brought last year’s defense back intact. We added a nice rookie LB (Channing Tindall) and a nice veteran LB/DE (Melvin Ingram). Once again, this is an ascending unit. If the offense can hold up their end of the bargain, be more balanced and be able to keep opposing defenses on the field longer, just imagine how much better our defense can be? All this remains to be seen, but it’s hard not to be optimistic that it can be so.

I’ll ask this question – What is the purpose, the goal of the investigation of Jan 6th? What do the Democrats hope to accomplish? Honest answers only please . . .
    ———————
To preserve our democratic institutions and to demonstrate how close they came to being subverted. Also to expose enough damning information about Trump so as to limit his ability to win another election. Not necessarily about the Democrats win the next election but to make sure Trump doesn’t as he was the main threat to our democratic peaceful transition of power

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree with so Trump doesn’t win another election, but the rest is bs

Dems are doing everything possible to destroy our democratic institutions

Biden was praising his throw trillions at our economy, it changed a lot of lives he said, what he didn’t say was how many it’s hurt or that it’s the root cause of inflation

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Biden has little to do with Jan 6 Commission. His policies are what they are and unless something changes he is unlikely to win another election. But the events of Jan 6 was a coup attempt by Donald Trump. This is not about Trumps policies vs Biden’s it’s about preserving the peaceful transition of power which is at the core of our constitution

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Don’t you think the Russia hoaks, with Hilllary creating the fake evidence or the cheating in the last election destroying our democracy?

No? How about Obama weaponizing the IRS by going after conservatives? Or the spying on the Trump campaign?

Fake news media came out this week with stories of Watergate turns 50, well what they’ve done in the last 10 makes Watergate look like a kindergarten excercise

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jan 6th has been debunked, it’s just a deflection of the horrible job the left has done running the country at every level before the midterms

At school level they’re trying to indoctrinate our children, at the city level they tried to defend the police, at the state level they’ve ruined election integrity, and at the national level they’ve fucked everything from personal safety to border issues to the economy to everything else

What’s interesting to me is that we went for the 5’10”, 205, 30-year-old, on his 6th team in 8 years, ZBS savvy Mostert (5.7 career YPC).

    VS

The 5’11”, 220, 26-year-old, on the same team for the 5th straight season, ZBS savvy Rashaad Penny (5.6 career YPC).

Both have great hands, both can block, and both have injury histories… but Mostert is on a 1-year deal for $2.15M while Penny is on a 1-year deal for $5.75M.

Maybe it’s just me, but I wanted a young yet experienced POWER BACK in our RB stable like Penny. It’s all good though: I’m a fan of Mostert’s game with his SPEED.

The Avs were (ARE) favored by 1 and 1/2 goals tonight. “THAT’s FOR ME” I said. “Colorado might beat the Lightning by 2 or more goals, but I think these odds definitely favor Tampa Bay.” –SO HERE WE ARE, one period left in regulation. And Tampa Bay has tied the game. “UNCLE MO” (MO Mentum) is in the Bolts’ favor. And Nikita Kucherov is hotter than a firecracker right now. Don’t be surprised if HIS LINE peoduces the WINNING GOAL!

    1) Lightning had the edge in 3rd period UNTIL Maroon’s goof.
    2) After a shaky 1st period, Vasilevskiy’s been PERFECT the last two periods.
    3) AS MANITOBA noted, Brayden Point’s come to life the last half of this contest.

Speed isn’t just 40 time, top end speed is more breakaway relevance

The argument will be that the punishment of Watson is not proportional to the punishment of those owners, especially in light of this key line from the Personal Conduct Policy: ‘Ownership and club or league management have traditionally been held to a higher standard and will be subject to more significant discipline when violations of the Personal Conduct Policy occur.'”

Tua Tagovailoa’s limitations as a passer were magnified in 2021 with just one consistent space creator at wide receiver. His 10 big-time throws fell far short of his 22 turnover-worthy plays, and he finished a second consecutive NFL season with a higher turnover-worthy rate (4.8%) than big-time throw rate (2.4%). In the days and weeks after the riot, five police officers who had served at the Capitol on Jan. 6 died.

Officer Brian D. Sicknick of the Capitol Police, who was attacked by the mob, died on Jan. 7.

Officer Jeffrey Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department killed himself after the attack.

Officer Howard S. Liebengood of the Capitol Police also died by suicide four days afterward.

The Capitol Police had previously said that Officer Sicknick died from injuries sustained “while physically engaging with protesters.” The Washington medical examiner later ruled that he had died of natural causes: multiple strokes that occurred hours after Officer Sicknick’s confrontation with the mob. The medical examiner added, however, that “all that transpired played a role in his condition.”

A bipartisan Senate report, released in June, found that the deaths were connected to the Capitol attack. But the report was issued a month before two Metropolitan Police officers — Gunther Hashida and Kyle DeFreytag — died by suicide in July.

My bigger point is perception, particularly what the MSM chooses to portray. I wouldn’t put it past Trump because I think he’s capable of it, but I think we all need to stop the “Stormed the Capitol” angle. Was it organized, or did things just get out of hand? That’s what I’m talking about. It was like a few people just lost their shit and went too far. That’s outrageous!!! I look ridiculous when I try to throw lefty, it’s amazing that he’s able to do that. Another thought just came to mind, if he blows his elbow on one arm, is he done, or can he still pitch with his other arm? It would be like having insurance

I’m pretty good throwing with both arms. My right I can throw mid 80s and with my left I can usually throw in the direction I’m aiming.

That’s a good question. I wonder if the whipping motion of the body would hinder the healing process or if he really could pitch with the other arm.
