A look at our WR’s

While the running back situation is far from settled as to which RB’s will be getting lots of playing time, touches or carries, the wide receiver situation is quite clear, especially when it comes to the top 3. Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Cedrick Wilson are the top dogs. It’s definitely muddy after that and potentially even more muddy after the Dolphins just signed veteran WR Mohamed Sanu. If I’m going to be honest, I don’t think Sanu makes the 53. We have too much young talent here to displaced by a 33 year old WR. By talent alone, Preston Williams is making this roster, but his health and his body have let him down and he hasn’t been able to stay on the field. Lynn Bowden Jr. offers versatility and may most closely resemble Deebo Samuel in as much as he can carry the ball out of the backfield and play WR as well. Bowden Jr. himself though has had trouble securing a spot on the roster and staying healthy. We drafted WR Erik Ezukanma in RD 4 and I’d expect him to make the roster. Then there are wild cards like Trent Sherfield who at 6’1 219 brings a big, physical presence at WR, and also history playing for the Niners in a similar offense. There’s also speedy WR River Cracraft who also played for the Niners.

Even though he’s classified as a TE, you could easily count TE Mike Gesicki as a WR as he is so often positioned in the slot. That may change though as McD attempts to make Gesicki a more well rounded TE like his former TE George Kittle, one of the leagues best all around TE. Kittle is a great receiver with uncanny run after the catch abilities, but no TE puts forth more effort blocking in the run and passing game as Kittle does. If Gesicki can become half the blocker Kittle is he will be so much better and our team will as well. The numbers at WR will also be affected by how many RB’s we carry, considering we know we will have a FB on our roster. It’s possible we only carry 5 WR’s and if that’s the case, I’d expect it to be Hill, Waddle, Wilson, Williams and Ezukanma. If it’s 6 WR’s, then one of those wild cards, or perhaps the veteran Sanu gets the nod, but to me that’s a long shot.

We haven’t had this much talent at the WR position since we had the Marks Brothers, Duper and Clayton. This truly is the closest as far as speed and talent to that duo. Cedrick Wilson could be our Nat Moore completing the trio. Our talent stretches even further though will potential guys like Williams and Bowden Jr. If Williams can stay healthy, much like his former counterpart DeVante Parker, he can be that big WR that wins those contested 50/50 throws. I think Tua is excellent at placing that ball to make those plays work.

I definitely consider the WR position one of our biggest strengths of the team, along with the defense. While our defense isn’t a star studded affair, it’s very solid and there a few young players on the cusp of stardom. In contrast, the WR corps has the stars right now, as Tyreek Hill is a top 3 WR on most lists and Jaylen Waddle, who is just going into year 2 would probably make top 10 on most lists. Cedrick Wilson may really feast this year if/when opposing defense give extra attention to Hill and Waddle. Like Tim often says, and of course this all dependent upon our O-line being competent, our offense will be difficult to defend. If the running game is working and we’re getting push up front, how do they possibly defend our passing game as long as Tua stays upright with enough time to throw? Pick your poison. This WR unit and our defense are the things that have me most excited. Hill, Waddle, Holland, Phillips, Jones, Baker, Wilkins, Ogbah and many more on that defense. If this WR unit plays as well as we hope, we won’t be worrying about who’s getting the carries in the run game.

So then no one should ever talk about what ORob said before? If he said it he did.
    —————
I’m truly not trying to start an argument over this and I think everybody here understands what I’m talking about. If somebody cannot respond to charges (ie: death, banned, incarcerated, etc), it’s not cool to speak badly about that somebody.

It pours salt on a wound, it doubles down on the negativity toward somebody, and it’s generally considered a cheap shot at someone who can’t defend themselves.

What’s more, context matters, and ORob may have just been trying to stir the pot in what he “said”, not seriously meaning it.

There’s nothing to see here. That said, I’m dropping this case. Let’s move along.

  6. mf13ss says:

    Stanger,

I think we all know what a healthy Preston Williams can do for us! I sense his frustrations, clearly. Let’s hope he makes the team and that he can be his best for our beloved team!

    PHINS UP!

    • stangerx says:

I’m a big Preston WIlliams fan, but this worries me about his future. He’s acting like a Diva wideout but hasn’t been admitted to that club yet. And we got two who deserve to be if they want on the team already. You compete for a back-up role gotta act like it.

  7. mf13ss says:

    Regarding Lynn Bowden…

Yeah, I’m not hearing anything about him that screams a 53 finalist thus far, but it’s early. What’s more, what goes on behind the scenes (closed practices from the media and fans) is what is going to define whether or not he makes the team.

Don’t give up hope on Bowden!

  8. mf13ss says:

We’re seeing the TC injuries begin to mount for several teams across the league, and it sucks that Adam Butler is lost for the season for us.

We’ve got the $$$ under the cap to make things happen, but I think Butler is replaceable ‘in-house’. Pray we don’t lose an O-Lineman to injury after JC Tretter is signed elsewhere.

    • Tim Knight says:

We waived Butler but not sure what his injury is.

      • mf13ss says:

Doesn’t really matter what his injury is, being we waived him. I agree with you from last night that we have the personnel to replace him in-house, Bro.

      • Tim Knight says:

I’m wondering if we have it in-house which wouldn’t surprise me, or do we sign someone or pick someone up after cuts. We see that happen all the time.

      • mf13ss says:

As I stated, we’ve got the $$$ to make it happen, if we so wish. 🙂

I just read an interesting bit theorizing why the league came down on the Dolphins like they did.

Part of the Watson defense strategy was to point out when owners get into trouble with similar violations as players, the penalties are not commensurate, even though it specifies in the code of conduct that owners will be held to a higher standard. This may the start of the league levying larger penalties against owners so as not to be painted into a corner.

The timing of our own penalties being announced and now the league appealing the Watson decision 🤔

I’m not mad at ya, Hulkster, I’m just sayin’, man.

  15. Rockphin says:

Defensive front owned the line of scrimmage
In 11-on-11s, the front seven was constantly getting pressure on the quarterbacks and blowing up runs at the line of scrimmage or in the backfield. They weren’t as strong on Tuesday, but they really bounced back on Wednesday for another impressive performance.

  16. stangerx says:

“The investigators found tampering violations of unprecedented scope and severity. I know of no prior instance of a team violating the prohibition on tampering with both a head coach and star player, to the potential detriment of multiple other clubs, over a period of several years. Similarly, I know of no prior instance in which ownership was so directly involved in the violations.”

    — NFL commissioner Roger Goodel

  17. Rockphin says:

Boy I am really looking forward to the preseason games and joint practices. I want to see if the Oline perceived improvement is real or just because our guys don’t take it to our own guys.

    • Tim Knight says:

Yeah and McDaniel likes shorter but more full speed practices, not just go through the motions. That sets players up for game speed.

      • Rockphin says:

Mental speed as well as physical speed. When you practice at full speed you are also training your brain to process faster. If everybody’s moving slower through a play in practice then they are not practicing the mental part to full extent

It happened again. One of those instances where the offense appears to have an imminent explosive play developing before No. 8 does his best Randy Orton impression.

On a intermediate sideline pass from Tagovailoa, Holland ranged over to the sideline and broke up a ball that he nearly intercepted. Earlier this week, Defensive Assistant Pat Surtain called Holland the quarterback of the defense, a pride-filled role that the studious Holland approaches with vigor.

“You just have to know what the defense is, know what it takes, know where the checks are, calls and things like that,” Holland said. “Everything that’s intertwined in the defense on that specific call. We have a lot of stuff going on. But on that specific play, you only have one defense, one job you have to worry about. As long as I do my 1/11th, boom everybody else is on the same page. If I do my 1/11th and I get the job done inside the play and the play is still going on, I can help other people do their 1/11th It’s a trickle down effect.”

Meanwhile, McDaniel was asked his reaction to Preston Williams’ Monday evening tweet that “just want opportunity. #smh” — which means shaking my head. He suggested he wasn’t bothered by that and doesn’t “prioritize” what players do in social media.

McDaniel, in response to the question about Williams’ tweet, said “one thing [that receivers coach] Wes Welker and I strongly connect on is we hold with a lot of responsibility preparing people and giving them opportunities. And it’s also they look at players that every time they’re on the field, it’s a tremendous opportunity for them and teammates they’re depending on and operate at a high standard. People care. People want to do good. I don’t hold much weight to all that.”

The key is to be unpredictable as it concerns run vs pass and to be equally effective in both facets. It’s all contingent upon our revamped O-Line and our coaching puts a heavy emphasis on O-Line prowess.

Why do you doubt it? He started more games than Gesicki last year with a different offense where we ran 12 personnel 62% of the time. McDaniel historically runs way less 12 and way more 11. Our very smart coach will have the better blocker in on those 11 plays. I am almost willing to bet that Smythe will get more snaps, not just more starts than him this season.
