A look at our WR’s

While the running back situation is far from settled as to which RB’s will be getting lots of playing time, touches or carries, the wide receiver situation is quite clear, especially when it comes to the top 3. Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Cedrick Wilson are the top dogs. It’s definitely muddy after that and potentially even more muddy after the Dolphins just signed veteran WR Mohamed Sanu. If I’m going to be honest, I don’t think Sanu makes the 53. We have too much young talent here to displaced by a 33 year old WR. By talent alone, Preston Williams is making this roster, but his health and his body have let him down and he hasn’t been able to stay on the field. Lynn Bowden Jr. offers versatility and may most closely resemble Deebo Samuel in as much as he can carry the ball out of the backfield and play WR as well. Bowden Jr. himself though has had trouble securing a spot on the roster and staying healthy. We drafted WR Erik Ezukanma in RD 4 and I’d expect him to make the roster. Then there are wild cards like Trent Sherfield who at 6’1 219 brings a big, physical presence at WR, and also history playing for the Niners in a similar offense. There’s also speedy WR River Cracraft who also played for the Niners.

Even though he’s classified as a TE, you could easily count TE Mike Gesicki as a WR as he is so often positioned in the slot. That may change though as McD attempts to make Gesicki a more well rounded TE like his former TE George Kittle, one of the leagues best all around TE. Kittle is a great receiver with uncanny run after the catch abilities, but no TE puts forth more effort blocking in the run and passing game as Kittle does. If Gesicki can become half the blocker Kittle is he will be so much better and our team will as well. The numbers at WR will also be affected by how many RB’s we carry, considering we know we will have a FB on our roster. It’s possible we only carry 5 WR’s and if that’s the case, I’d expect it to be Hill, Waddle, Wilson, Williams and Ezukanma. If it’s 6 WR’s, then one of those wild cards, or perhaps the veteran Sanu gets the nod, but to me that’s a long shot.

We haven’t had this much talent at the WR position since we had the Marks Brothers, Duper and Clayton. This truly is the closest as far as speed and talent to that duo. Cedrick Wilson could be our Nat Moore completing the trio. Our talent stretches even further though will potential guys like Williams and Bowden Jr. If Williams can stay healthy, much like his former counterpart DeVante Parker, he can be that big WR that wins those contested 50/50 throws. I think Tua is excellent at placing that ball to make those plays work.

I definitely consider the WR position one of our biggest strengths of the team, along with the defense. While our defense isn’t a star studded affair, it’s very solid and there a few young players on the cusp of stardom. In contrast, the WR corps has the stars right now, as Tyreek Hill is a top 3 WR on most lists and Jaylen Waddle, who is just going into year 2 would probably make top 10 on most lists. Cedrick Wilson may really feast this year if/when opposing defense give extra attention to Hill and Waddle. Like Tim often says, and of course this all dependent upon our O-line being competent, our offense will be difficult to defend. If the running game is working and we’re getting push up front, how do they possibly defend our passing game as long as Tua stays upright with enough time to throw? Pick your poison. This WR unit and our defense are the things that have me most excited. Hill, Waddle, Holland, Phillips, Jones, Baker, Wilkins, Ogbah and many more on that defense. If this WR unit plays as well as we hope, we won’t be worrying about who’s getting the carries in the run game.

Then they make the movie in a few years back and cast Idris Elba as the Gunslinger. BTW, he was great, but I still picture a younger Clint Eastwood.

    ATTENDANCE REPORT
The two injured players were out again — defensive lineman Adam Butler and guard/center Michael Deiter — but the players out for load management were different, with running back Sony Michel and fullback Alec Ingold getting the day off from practice.

Tackle Terron Armstead and running back Raheem Mostert back were back in action after being out for work load management Thursday.

    PRACTICE TOP PERFORMERS
    — Second-year edge defender Jaelan Phillips continues to make himself noticed in team drills, both in pass-rushing and running game situations. He looks like the fastest guy along the line of scrimmage on a regular basis.

    — Jevon Holland came up with one of the interceptions on the day when he picked off a long Tua Tagovailoa pass intended for Jaylen Waddle. Holland showed the type of instincts and ball skills that he flashed as a rookie in 2021 that have made him a player for whom many have predicted stardom.

    — Mostert showed a nice burst on a running play, which obviously was a great sign in his second practice of training camp after his 2021 knee injury.

    — The portion of practice outside concluded with a long series of 11-on-11 plays, and it was not a great practice for Tagovailoa. His highlight was a 50-yard touchdown pass to rookie free agent Braylon Sanders, though it was a pass that hung in the air for a long time that cornerback Nik Needham appeared to misplay. Tua’s other two completions were dump-offs. There also were a play or two where pressure forced him to step up in the pocket.

    — Teddy Bridgewater also didn’t have a productive day, as he completed 1 of 3 passes and threw the other pick, by linebacker Duke Riley, on a deep pass after getting pressure up the middle by John Jenkins. Bridgewater also scrambled twice after some late pressure and his only completion came on a low throw that River Cracraft dug up.

    — Rookie seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson completed both of his attempts, but both were short throws. He also had a problematic handoff — where he had to reach at the last second — that threw off the timing on a running play by rookie Za’Quandre White, though it’s not clear whether it was Thompson or White who was off on the handoff point.

    OTHER PRACTICE OBSERVATIONS
    — Before the team period, the Dolphins had a one-on-one period for the first time in practice, and we focused our attention on the DB-WR matchups. The highlights there included Xavien Howard with great coverage against Tyreek Hill to force an incompletion; Trill Williams putting Sanders on the ground at the line of scrimmage with a hit; Keion Crossen with a pass breakup and great coverage against Trent Sherfield; and Kader Kohou with a PBU against Preston Williams.

    — Noah Igbinoghene continued his solid work in camp with a nice pass breakup against Tua while covering Lynn Bowden Jr.

    — Connor Williams had a high shotgun snap that disrupted the timing of a running play to Raheem Mostert.

    — Christian Wilkins and rookie Ben Stille had would-be sacks, with Darius Hodge also close to the quarterback on Stille’s “sack.”

    — Salvon Ahmed showed good burst on his running plays.

    — Second-year offensive lineman Liam Eichenberg wore the orange jersey as the practice player of the day for Thursday.

  9. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The Dolphins changed things up on the third day of training camp, practicing outside for an hour (open to the media) and then moving indoors (closed to the media). And there was one disconcerting injury update: Michael Deiter, who missed nine games with a foot injury last season, was in a walking boot. Deiter played 100 percent of the offensive snaps in the eight games that he appeared last season, and he figures to be the backup center if healthy.

    STARS OF THE DAY
    ▪ Jevon Holland, who continues to make plays every day. On Friday, he outjumped Jaylan Waddle for an interception on a down-the-middle 45-yard pass by Tua Tagovailoa.

    ▪ Linebacker Duke Riley, who intercepted a poorly thrown pass by Teddy Bridgewater.

    ▪ Braylon Sanders, the Mississippi rookie, who caught a 35-yard pass from Tagovailoa and went the distance for a touchdown

    PLAYS OF THE DAY
    ▪ The aforementioned Holland interception. He’s making an impact every practice.

    ▪ Salvon Ahmed showed good burst getting to the outside for a long run.

    ▪ The Sanders play — his first big play of camp. The Mississippi rookie is a long shot to make the 53 in a deep receiving room, but he has a good chance to make the practice squad. Nik Needham was beaten on that play. Find more sports news, plus coverage from Sports Illustrated.

    ▪ Xavien Howard deflected a Bridgewater pass to Tyreek Hill.

    ▪ Tagovailoa, who had no interceptions but three near interceptions in the first two training camp practices, finally threw one on that deep ball to Waddle, who had a chance to catch it. Holland was able to jump higher to pull it down. Tagovailoa was fine otherwise, beginning the day with a 15-yard completion to Waddle, connecting with Durham Smythe for a 10-yard play that Smythe ran in for a touchdown, and juking a defender to stay alive in the pocket and complete a 15-yarder to Raheem Mostert. And Tagovailoa’s pass to Sanders for a TD was a well-placed throw. Christian Wilkins deflected a Tagovailoa screen pass that fell incomplete.

    ▪ Riley’s interception off the Bridgewater pass was pretty easy — there was no receiver in the neighborhood. It was the worst throw of camp but might have resulted from a miscommunication.

    ▪ Wilkins and Raekwon Davis have done a good job stuffing the run through three days of camp. On Friday, Wilkins stuffed Chase Edmonds for a short gain and knocked away the aforementioned pass from Tagovailoa.

    ▪ Raheem Mostert, who is working every other day as part of a maintenance program, had a handful of carries and took one for a long gain that might have gone for a touchdown. It’s difficult to tell when a run would actually end in a real game, because whistles often blow as soon as there’s contact.

    ▪ Rookie quarterback Skylar Thompson, who bumbled three center snaps on Thursday, was better on Friday. He completed a nine yard pass to Doaks and completed intermediate passes to River Cracraft and Cedrick Wilson Jr.

    ▪ Bridgewater ran for three yards after Jerome Baker nearly sacked him. ▪ John Jenkins had a sack of Tagovailoa. Edge player Darius Hodge continues to impress; he’s around the ball a lot.

    ▪ Rookie left tackle Kion Smith committed an illegal motion penalty. ▪ Ahmed continues to look good. He’s Mr. August, a player who looks very good without full uniforms (and good at times in full uniform).

    ▪ Liam Eichenberg wore the orange practice jersey, meaning coaches determined he was the best performer at Thursday’s practice.

    AVAILABILITY REPORT
    ▪ Deiter’s injury, if serious, could leave the Dolphins in a bind at backup center. Robert Jones, the second year guard, has taken some snaps on his own at center this summer. Rookie Cole Banwart can play center. Connor Williams has said he expects to be the center this season.

    ▪ Running back Sony Michel was held out as part of the team’s maintenance program. ▪ Defensive tackle Adam Butler remained sidelined with an undisclosed injury,

    ▪ Defensive backs Byron Jones and Elijah Campbell remain sidelined. Jones — who had offseason surgery in the ankle/Achilles area, expects to be back for the start of the regular season.

I was looking at the AFC and there is a good chance that no team is going to be awful. The worst teams last year were JAX, HOU and the NYJ but they could all be improved and competitive. You never know who’s going to get hit with a lot of injuries or who will lose a lot of tough games, but I see the AFC being very competitive. The teams that make the playoffs will be battle tested and legit good teams because it’s not going to be easy.

Tim – It’s funny, I’ve done a complete 180 on what I think the Mets should do. I feel like if they have to give up 4 or 5 prospects (I’m loathe to give up prospects, especially now that we’re finally start to build up our farm with talent) and maybe one or two major leaguer’s like Dom Smith and maybe even either David Peterson or Tylor Megill to get Juan Soto, I’d be fine with it. This team would probably lock him up for 10-12 years, he’s 23, and he’s one of the game’s best. He would be great in our lineup, he would make our outfield one of the best, with him in RF, Nimmo in CF and Marte in LF. I have a feeling the Nats won’t trade him to us unless they destroy our farm system, but I’d certainly try to pry him free if it’s possible.

OMG! Seek help PLEASE! Q is not your savior. There is not a secret cabal of elite democrats kidnapping children to drain them of their blood!!! Oxidized adrenaline is not some magic source of immortality. I does NOT have any rejuvenation properties. It is also not “only available” from human adrenal glands. It is a chemical compound that is easily synthesized in the lab.

PLEASE help yourself and YOU do some research from other sources than the dark web Qanon rabbit holes.
    ————-
Rockphin, what I stated has absolutely nothing to do with “Q(anon)” (they are a PSYOP), democrats or republicans, or even the effectiveness of ingesting adrenochrome (drinking blood or via drugs).

There are some sick puppies out there, nonetheless, who have followed this cult-like behavior… I suppose one could call it a religion. But yes, there are some ELITES who ‘allegedly’ follow this practice. Look throughout human history (even before the times of Christ) to know it’s always been a thing. Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” is essentially talking about it: drinking blood to become immortal (or undead).

No, I don’t have definitive proof (LOL, like the elites would ever allow that to be published) that it’s currently going on, nor did I offer that I have definitive proof. But there is, however, a long history of it going on. Could it still be happening? Maybe, maybe not.

I honestly hope it’s not ongoing. And you turned it into politics, not I. Again and allegedly, it’s not about reps and dems, cons or libs… it’s the ELITE, even those who aren’t into politics. Not sure I believe it myself, but it’s out there and being censored by Big Tech.

Personally? I think it’s more about pedo-rings — not adrenochrome — that has many talking about what’s been going on (ie: Epstein Island, Ghislaine Maxwell, Prince Andrew, etc).

Didn’t mean to ruffle your feathers, guy.

Tim, re: sharks. I have been living here on the panhandle and going to the beach for 17 years now. I have never seen a shark at the beach until this year. I may have mentioned a few weeks ago, I have seen 2 this year up until yesterday when I encountered my 3rd. First one we were just walking the beach in mid-June and saw about a 3′ shark slowly swim by in about 2′ of water. The second was just before the 4th of July. It was at least 4′ and it swam right between my wife and I and we were about 20′ apart. She was waist deep and I was in about 3.5′- 4′ deep. It had to be a blacktip or a bull shark. It’s body was thick and stout like a bull shark. It just swam right by us and headed down the surf. Water has been crystal clear all year and you can see your feet in chest deep water. Yesterday was my 3rd encounter this year. I was in 2′-3′ water throwing a spoon for Spanish Mackerel. I got “sharked” on my second hook up. I had the fish on for about 5 seconds about 30 yards out from me when the shark swooped in and nailed my fish. It had to be 5′ and possibly another bull shark. Not sure though. Fought it for about 15 seconds before it broke me off.

I’m like, WTF is up with all the sharks this year. It’s crazy!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s wild. I’ve been watching shark month and a bunch of episodes talked about how sharks are appearing in waters not normally seen before and most of them are bull sharks.

In your post you specifically referenced Adrenochrome.

Fair enough. Now research adrenochrome. It goes way back, to the days before Christ. Human sacrifice… especially children. Blood-drinking. Think about it…

Adrenochrome has nothing to do with vampirism human sacrifice blood drinking or any of the nonsense that has been attached to it solely and exclusively by QAnon conspiracy theorists. The compound does not even occur naturally in the human body. Nobody before the 1940s or so even knew what the compound was.

Hunter. S Thompson made shit up in Fear and loathing in Las Vegas, a totally fictional story but it had enough traction in the American lexicon for it’s story to be “believable”

Before then there was no connection between “ adrenochrome” and blood or blood sacrifice or vampires or Child smuggling rings.

All of this is QAnon conspiracy theory it cannot be disconnected. It is SOLELY A QAnon thing.

By the way I agree with you that it is a PSYOP It appears to have been a successful one

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I was saying that the mere concept of blood drinking goes way back… not that the word or specific term of adrenochrome goes way back. We’re arguing semantics at this point, bud.

Hitler himself was factually in search of the Holy Grail (among many other ancient artifacts). The idea? To drink from the grail that once held the blood of Jesus Christ could grant one ETERNAL LIFE.

Research the history, my friend. I’m truly not trying to be a d!ck to ya. And before Christ, there were blood sacrifices to the ‘gods’, where it was ritualistic to drink the blood of the sacrificed, world over.

I’m talking about historic matters and wonder(?) if it’s still going on today in certain cults/circles.

        Fair enough.

I certainly could have explained what I meant far better than I had. I thought adrenochrome — rightfully or wrongfully — was a good place to start, in order to comprehend and then backtrack why so many in the past drank blood… especially the ELITES.

        We’re good, Rockphin.

Naples, you out there??? You ever see the band called “The Blanks” at the Windjammer on IOP? This was one of the songs they covered as well as stuff from The Fixx. They had that girl also who did a few covers from the Pretenders. She even looked like Chrissie Hynde a little. Anyway, MikeE’s song made me think about it.

Well no I think I must’ve already moved down here when they were playing at the jammer.
(I lived on the Isle of Palms one winter so close to the pier that I could walk there.)
(Then they tripled the monthly rent for the summer tourists,
so I had move back across the river to Charleston.)
Too bad I missed it. Sounds like a good band.
This U2 song though is a truly amazing piece on every level.
saw them at the hockey rink in Montreal. a stunning show …

Darius went to the same high school I did across the other river West of the Ashley (River). Of course he’s much younger than I.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Bennie Shell, the little brother of Art Shell, OT and HC of the Raiders, also went to that high school. Art is a little bit older than I, so schools were still segregated then, so he went to an all black high school in North Charleston. He also went to an all black college.

  62. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The Charleston connection took Shell to the Raiders, as Al Davis was an assistant coach in Charleston at the Citadel from 1953-1956, although Art Shell and I were just little kids then.
    … …
But Davis was OL coach and head recruiter for the Bulldogs, and he wanted some of those local high quality black players, but they were forbidden at the Citadel at that time.
    … …
That’s when he got a promotion to the U of Southern Cal, which gatewayed Al Davis into the formation of the AFL in 1960 with the LA Chargers franchise.
And he used what he had learned about working with Black people in Charleston to recruit players to stock the AFL from small black colleges that many white GMs in the older NFL would not sign.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

North Charleston was my stomping ground growing up as my dad was stationed and retired out of Naval Hospital Charleston. It was Bonds-Wilson High School. It integrated sometime in the 70’s. I started there in 1978 but moved to Indiana after just a few months. I also went to formerly segregated Berry Elementary School just a short walking distance from Bonds-Wilson HS. David Meggett went there after I left.

You guys must have gone to Middleton or St. Andrews.

Yes I went to St Andrew’s, but After full integration they had too many kids as the white parents refused to send their kids to the formerly black high school, so they retrofitted my Jr. High school and renamed it Middleton after the plantation nearby, which is where my little brother, Shell’s little brother, and Rucker graduated from HS, but it was where I went to 7th through 9th before integration.

  66. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It was so obvious that they were trying to placate the whites by renaming the school after an Old South plantation that had had slaves. I guess to remind the blacks that even though they could now go to school with whites, …

On that long pass there were two RBs in the backfield and a motion man crossing behind the entire OL. And I think that influenced the DBs, so there was single coverage on Hill.

“Oh, they’re scared s—less,” Hill said on Thursday when asked what defenses are thinking seeing the two of them line up. “I’m going to tell you what. ‘J. Dub’ (Waddle), he’s faster than I thought. When I first got here, I was like, okay he’s a 4.3 because typically when you see 4.3 guys, they don’t run as fast on a football field. But ‘J. Dub’ — like he actually runs a 4.3 on the football field. There’s a difference, right?

“So like I said, I’m very excited for the season. I can’t wait to see him blossom and continue to move his game forward, which I know he will because he comes out here every single day and he works hard and he wants to get better.”

I am as giddy as a school girl

Yesterday, we discussed the balance of good pass protection versus good coverage. The Miami quarterbacks have had their fair share of clean pockets to work with (see the 65-yard touchdown pass). It started off with a would-be sack from Christian Wilkins early in the team period (Wilkins has picked up right where he left off in 2021, for what it’s worth). But then the offensive line stabilized for most of practice.

The pass rush had a few wins. Andrew Van Ginkel came with a picture-perfect double-hand swipe at the point before flattening to tag off the quarterback. Van Ginkel added an effort sack on a play in which Teddy Bridgewater had time but nobody open. Jaelan Phillips had a similar play rushing against Tagovailoa where he got behind the quarterback and likely could’ve swiped the ball clean in a live situation.

Aside from that, and a meeting by Emmanuel Ogbah and Melvin Ingram at the quarterback, the pass protection was again sterling. It’s been getting better every day in practice and goes a long way towards helping the Dolphins pick up chunk gain after chunk gain.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You always want a competitive camp with win some lose some. When one side dominates all the time that means one side is struggling. We’ve seen that over the years.

  92. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Mike McDaniel informed the media on Saturday morning that he announces the top-timed speed each day in the team meeting and that Raheem Mostert earned that distinction from Friday’s practice. Clearly, this team values speed, and not just on the offense.

Three players on Saturday gave fans a showcase of the team speed on defense.

First, Jerome Baker, who made a handful of plays in this practice, raced around the edge on an outside running play. He won the foot race and stayed tight to the formation to scrape off the engaged block and make the play for a loss.
