Stephen Ross Fallout – Training Camp Stuff

I’ve never hated Stephen Ross like so many people in South Florida do. I think most of the people who hate him, hate him for the wrong reasons. They hate him because he’s a New York guy first and foremost. Cracks me up how much people from Florida hated him for that reason from the get-go. How many people who live in Florida are actually Florida natives? Florida is littered with transplants, littered! If he came from South Carolina he’d have been fine. I always saw Ross as a guy who just wants to win, and would do anything, even things outside the rules to win. I think a lot of rich, billionaires feel that way, they’ve been doing that their whole lives. On the other hand, the NFL has 32 billionaires all in the same boat, and there are rules that have to be followed or there are consequences for breaking those rules. Well, now as Dolphins fans, we have to eat the shit sandwich of losing one of our TWO 1st round picks in next year’s draft, and then another 3rd round pick in 2024. It sucks, it definitely does, but do I hate Stephen Ross? He’s done everything he could to make Hard Rock Stadium a great place to come for Dolphins fans. While we haven’t won a Superbowl or been perennial playoff contenders, no other Dolphins Owner in the last 30 years did that either! So I still don’t hate Stephen Ross, but I wouldn’t hate if he sold the team either. Then you have to worry about who takes over.

To be clear, I’m not defending Ross. I hate what he did tampering with Tom Brady of all people. I tell you with all honesty I could not watch Tom Brady play on the Miami Dolphins. Whatever we would possibly accomplish with Tom Brady as QB would only be another feather in the cap of Tom Brady and our team would be on Brady’s coattails, just as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were. He went to a very talented Bucs team, and then he recruited other NFL talent (Sound like the NBA anyone?) to put them over the top. The Bucs that previous season were 7-9, but their QB Jameis Winston turned the ball over a historically high 45 times, 33 interceptions and 12 fumbles. He also threw for over 5000 yards and 30 TD’s because that team had talent. Brady didn’t go to the Detroit Lions and win the Super Bowl, no, he went to a team on the cusp and then brought in a few extra great players to get them over the top. If having Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Brown, and Leonard Fournette on your team all due to Brady recruiting, and winning the Super Bowl with those guys make you feel good, so be it. It would do nothing for me and the entire season would be tainted and unwatchable for me.

So, on to training camp. It’s been a competitive camp so far, but it’s hard to glean important information until they get the pads and helmets on, which just recently happened, and even then, it’s not that easy. Guys that are training camp stars sometimes get cut, and sometimes guys don’t get exposed or ball out until the real games start. Undrafted WR Braylon Sanders is getting a lot of hype right now, but who knows if this guy even makes the roster. 4th RD pick Erik Ezukanma is also getting positive hype, and is a more likely candidate to make the roster. Then again, undrafted WR Wes Welker is the WR Coach now in Miami, so maybe I’m off on that. There’s also a lot of hype going to TE Durham Smythe. Plenty of talk that he will be getting more reps. Well, he’s the better blocker, that much is clear, and he’s a decent receiver as well. Doesn’t matter who starts, but if you think Durham Smythe is going to get more targets than TE Mike Gesicki, you’re crazy. My hope is that Gesicki becomes a more balanced NFL TE under McD, but if not, he’s clearly the better receiving TE with speed, agility, the ability to high point the football and catch anything near him, and of course make a contested catch.

It’s impossible to gauge the running backs right now so we’ll have to wait some for that to develop. It seems Raheem Mostert is healthy and feeling good, so that’s a plus. LT Austin Jackson is having a strong camp so far, but it’s too early to get real excited. Let’s hope the injury bug stays away, it has so far, and that’s one of the most important things. Get through training camp healthy, and get ready for the season. There’s always feel good stories in training camp, but often times they don’t amount to much. One of them is Noah Igbinoghene, and how this may finally be his year. That would be great, just don’t bet on it. Tua is throwing the ball well, his best passes are touch passes because he doesn’t throw frozen ropes like Justin Herbert. If he’s going to do that, it’s going to be within 20 yards, he doesn’t have elite arm strength, he has elite accuracy with average NFL strength. He makes good decisions most times, has a quick release, and sees the defense well. I think he’s going to have a great year, can’t wait to see it!

Looks like Steve may not be happy about this.

The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed punter Sterling Hofrichter and waived punter Tommy Heatherly.

Hofrichter (pronounced hoff-rick-tur) was a seventh-round pick (228th overall) by Atlanta in the 2020 NFL Draft. He played in all 16 games for the Falcons his rookie season, totaling 56 punts for 2,381 yards (42.5 avg.) with 17 inside the 20. In 2021, Hofrichter spent part of the season on Tampa Bay’s practice squad and appeared in two games for the Buccaneers. He played collegiately at Syracuse.

Heatherly signed with Miami as an undrafted college free agent from FIU on May 13, 2022. He was a three-year letterman for the Panthers, playing in all 30 games from 2019-21. He earned first-team All-Conference USA honors in 2021.

This is why reports out of training camp, whether a beat reporter or someone who goes a time or two, really don’t mean a whole lot, lol. We have no idea what the coaches are seeing or looking at, and there are whole worlds of things happening out of sight and/ or behind the scenes.

I don’t hate Ross either Mike, but I think he has out-stayed his welcome in S. Fla. and his legacy, in spite of all the good he tried to do, will forever be tainted by the many things he did wrong. Ironically, he may have installed a good regime now (hopefully the end of his reign). It is what it is though.

I’m looking forward to the new season but still not touching the cheese. You can’t help but love McDaniel though.

“Mike McDaniel told his players “I see better than I hear.” The idea is that it’s one thing to express your emotions on social media, etc., but the best place and best way to express your emotions is on the football field”.

In other words, walk the walk – talk is cheap. Love it.

    Nice write, Mike.

My biggest problem with Ross is the bumbling way he went about this stuff. Didn’t this guy earn his money? His daddy didn’t give it to him, right? Where is the business savvy? Where is the self-awareness of what you’re doing and applied intelligence used in skirting the rules? Ok, you’re going to tamper; could you try be a little circumspect? Could you also maybe pull off at least one of these little coups?

Instead, it appears he left a trail a blind guy could follow to the point the commissioner stated unequivocally it was the worst case of tampering he’s ever seen- and with two high profile guys, no less. That tells me they didn’t really have to comb the desert with a fine toothed comb to find what they needed, lol.

Ross probably had a 10 step plan on a bulletin board captioned: “How I’m going to break the rules and steal Brady and Payton- muahahaha”

As for the team, we have a little over a week of training camp under our belt; we still have all three preseason games ahead of us. I’m excited to see how the team looks in live fire, and I’m cautiously optimistic, but 20 years of ineptitude have me tamping down the fire of my enthusiasm until I see something with my own eyes. Looking forward to 08/13

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the business world is very different than the NFL, that was kind of my point. In business you can throw money around and throw your weight around or both and get what you want. I believe he’s used to doing things that way, but here among 32 other owners in the NFL, the rules have changed. There is a governing body that tries to keep the playing field somewhat level in order to allow parity. Stephen Ross has been a business man, real estate guy way longer than he’s been an NFL owner and it’s obvious he’s had trouble following the rules. It all started with that ill fated helicopter ride. In any case, My guess is he’s not used to getting caught, he has probably been skirting penalty for decades.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I know a few high powered business guys and they are intelligent, savvy, and know how to skirt rules and cover their tracks. Cover their tracks being kind of the key element. Anybody can skirt rules. Bumbling around like Ross does is just incompetent.

I hate Ross but for the right reasons. He is an entitled prick who doesn’t know how to run a football team and has embarrassed this franchise on several occasions and has now cost it draft choices

  10. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

very well stated … balanced and not wild eyed … and of course I could not agree more about a Brady SB being an almost worthless asterisk for our team …
    … …
One thing though is about the NY connection for Ross.
Ross is not from NY. He was born in Michigan outside of Detroit.
He graduated from Miami Beach High as part of a huge Jewish contingent that lives on Miami Beach. There is a synagogue there and a Jewish hospital.
Ross went to U Florida before transferring to U Michigan.
We down here consider him a midwestern / Florida guy who went to NY and made good.
There are millions of people down here from the Midwest as I-75 literally runs from Michigan to Miami (through Tampa and then Naples).
I’ve never met a fan from down here who thinks Ross is not a hyper Dolphins fan.
I think him being an absentee owner is another false media narrative like Tua can’t throw deep.
    … …
But Mike, I know what you were driving at, and it’s all good.
    Go Dolphins

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Naples – One of his biggest detractors/haters on this board is OD, and he always referred to him as a NYer, and I know others see it that way as well. He could have stopped in NY for a cup of coffee and some would just see him as a New Yorker. I understand the anti-NY sentiment somewhat, but it’s almost a nature thing at this point, like birds fly south for the winter, so do many New Yorkers. lol

Here were the highlights from McDaniel’s press conference:

    — First question deals with the large number of tight ends on the roster (Mike Gesicki, Durham Smythe, Adam Shaheen, Cethan Carter, Hunter Long) and the issue of being able to use all of them when deciding to re-sign players. McDaniel says he tries not to have preconceived notions about how players are going to respond.

    — Preseason games bring a tough challenge in terms of getting players ready while trying to avoid injuries. McDaniel says there will be some starters who play in the preseason opener against Tampa Bay and some who will sit. Would expect Terron Armstead and Xavien Howard to be among those who sit.

    — In light of the revelations from the NFL investigation this week, McDaniel says the focus should be on the 2022 season and the players are owed complete and utter focus on that, so the best course of action is not giving it attention.

    — Byron Jones remains on PUP, but McDaniel says he he’s making steady progress and as long as there’s no setback in his recovery there isn’t a concern about his availability for the start of the regular season.

    — Regarding the decision to release DL Adam Butler with a failed physical designation, McDaniel says CBA implications forced the Dolphins’ hand there. Says he’s very confident in the DL room.

    — McDaniel says his favorite part of joint practices, which the Dolphins will do next week in Tampa, is competition.

    — In light of the reports of the Dolphins tampering with Tom Brady, McDaniel says being a starting quarterback in the NFL brings with it constant competition. Says Tua Tagovailoa has expressed and demonstrated confidence throughout this year.

    — McDaniel says it has been “really, really cool” to watch Tua and safety Jevon Holland compete against each other at practice. “They’ve got a nice competitive bond going.”

    — In light of Preston Williams’ public plea for more opportunity this week, McDaniel says players can best express their feelings on the football field. McDaniel says he tells his players, “I see better than I hear.”

    — Regarding the number of high shotgun snaps in practice and whether he’s concerned, McDaniel says he would be concerned if Connor Williams wasn’t working at it.

    — Michael Deiter is feeling better and “expect him sooner than later.”

The evidence doesn’t state who initiated talks between Brady and Dolphins minority owner Bruce Beal. Considering the two are good friends, the topic of Brady coming to the Dolphins may have come up multiple times in both casual and more serious conversations.

Regardless of who reached out first, however, Brady was in no danger of facing discipline here .”

I will argue that Ross is nowhere near the worst owner in football. Dan Snyder tops him. meddling Jerry Jones is worse, Al Davis was awful, the guys who gave hand-job 230 mil 100% guaranteed tops him. Just off the top of my bald head.

I personally can’t stand Jerry Jones but he has been very successful and his invested his own money into that team and stadium in much greater amounts than Ross ever has. I will take him all day over Ross and I can’t stand Jones. Guys in Cleveland the jury is still out. They have made some puzzling moves but they have built a pretty good time despite the fact that they are in Cleveland

Dolphins Camp 2022 Day 10: Practice Observations
The Miami Dolphins defense won the day, more high shotgun snaps, Terron Armstead returns were among the storylines Friday:

There were some positive developments in terms of player participation when the Dolphins returned to practice at the Baptist Health Training Complex on Friday.

On this day, easily dominated by the defense, it was rookie Kellen Diesch who was tasked with firing up the fans before the start of practice.

    ATTENDANCE REPORT
Safety Clayton Fejedelem joined offensive lineman Michael Deiter and fullback John Lovett on the camp injury list, while DB Elijah Campbell was out with an illness.

Tackle Terron Armstead returned after a couple of load management days and took part of some team drills.

More good news involved running back Raheem Mostert practicing in a regular jersey after wearing a red (no-contact) jersey for a couple of days.

Linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel wore the orange jersey as the practice performer of the last session.

    PRACTICE TOP PERFORMERS
    — Defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah was among the many standouts on defense. He got around the corner for what would have been a sack of Tua Tagovailoa and on the very next play forced Tua to scramble out of trouble.

    — Shout-out to rookie free agent cornerback Kadeer Kohou for his work in the 1-on-1 passing drills. In a drill that heavily favors the offense, he had three good reps against Erik Ezukanma and Braylon Sanders.

    — The one player who stood out on offense was — no surprise — Tyreek Hill. Of the nine completions in team drills (not including passes thrown after either a sack or scramble would have occurred in a game), Hill had four. He caught passes from all three quarterbacks.

    — With the defense dominating the day, this obviously means it was a rough outing for the offense, and, yes, that includes Tua. He was off target with a few outside throws in the 1-on-1 drills and in team periods, he completed 3 of 5 passes. One was a short touchdown to Hill and another was a nice out also to Hill. He also was sacked twice. But, while it wasn’t all on Tua obviously, wasn’t sharp when he was in the huddle.

    — Teddy Bridgewater was slightly better, both in the 1-on-1 passing drill (not overly significant but worth mentioning) and in the team periods. Bridgewater was 4-for-5 with his best throw going to Sanders when he passed over a group of defenders to the left sideline.

    — Skylar Thompson ended his work day with a nice 20-yard completion down the middle to Cedrick Wilson Jr., but he was only 2-for-5 and overshot Sanders in the end zone on a deep throw. Thompson also badly overthrow Trent Sherfield over the middle.

    OTHER PRACTICE OBSERVATIONS
    — Because of his tweet Monday night, we have to continue keeping tabs on Preston Williams, who yet again didn’t have a catch, though he was targeted once this time.

    — The shotgun snap issues were there again, with back-to-back high snaps by Connor Williams, another high snap by Adam Pankey and a low snap by Cole Banwart.

    — Defensive tackle John Jenkins, who has been impressive in 1-on-1 pass-rushing drills, got into the backfield on a running play by Sony Michel.

    — Officials were used for the first time in training camp.

    — With officials in place and signaling whether field goal attempts were good, we could chart Jason Sanders’ kicks for the first time. He was 6-for-6, hitting from 32, 36, 39, 44, 50 and 52 yards.

    — One of those officials threw a flag from the outside past the line of scrimmage on a running play, and based on the location of the flag and the player’s reaction, it looked like the culprit was Lynn Bowden Jr.

    — Edge defender Porter Gustin recorded a sack, his third in the last week of practice.

    — Zach Sieler also had a sack, though that one might have been more adequately described as a coverage sack. The same happened when Trill Williams got to Tagovailoa.

    — Tackle Greg Little stood up Raekwon Davis at the line on a pass play for several seconds, and Davis ended up looking at the officials to get a penalty flag but none was thrown.

Jaelan Phillips was intentionally omitted from the first takeaway to highlight the production of Miami’s 18th overall picks of the 2020 and 2021 NFL Draft. Both had another fantastic practice Friday.
Phillips, who was coming off a multi-sack practice on Wednesday, started the team period with back-to-back snaps shutting down run plays in his direction. During individual drills, Phillips worked alone with an assistant coach perfecting his technique. That work immediately carried over to the team period. He kept his frame clean and discarded a pair of blocks for stuffs and added some pass-rush flavor late in the day.
Later, Chase Edmonds burst through for an explosive run behind a block of Austin Jackson. Jackson was able to get outside of Phillips on the play, turn him in and finish the block with authority. This, in addition to a bunch of quality pass sets and reps, has been a consistent operation from Jackson in camp.

I move that Steve Ross is the worst owner in all of the ‘Big-4′ sports… yes, that even includes “Deep Pockets” Dan Snyder. Even Snyder got a more recent playoff win than our Phins under Ross.

Jerry Jones and (RIP) Al Davis can hoist Lombardi Trophies, so they don’t qualify for the level of buffoonery that is Ross.

Ross’ track record is so bad that under him, there has been no other franchise trashed via late-night comedians and ‘Jeopardy!’ questions/answers since. No, not even Snyder and his Redskins/Commanders.

NOBODY would care if he was born and raised in NY (which he wasn’t), so long as he delivered. Well, he delivered SHADE to Hard Rock Stadium… but only after trying to get the locals to pay for it (WEAK move, from a multi-billionaire).

Look, I’ll give Ross an ‘A+’ for effort, but an ‘E’ for success… it’s nothing personal against the man, but he’s failed miserably, time and again. It’s almost legendary how bad he’s screwed up. Part of the reason I’ve said none of the first 4 or 5 games are ‘must win’. If we can start off 2-2 with a win against NE, I think that’s a great start considering the offense should get better as the season progresses.

I saw the video on line of Heatherly booming 5 second hangtime punts, and if his placement is as good as you say, it is curious why he was cut so early in camp. The Bucs also didn’t want him, so there is something there.

From Mike Masala, USA Today Sports

The Miami Dolphins have made a number of changes to their roster this offseason, but the coaching staff may have changed just as much.

One of the more interesting additions to Miami’s coaching crew is former Dolphins cornerback Patrick Surtain being named an assistant under defensive coordinator Josh Boyer after spending multiple seasons as the head coach of American Heritage High School.

Surtain, and his son, Patrick Surtain II, recently joined “The Pivot” podcast, hosted by former NFL players Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor. Most of the conversation was about the younger Surtain’s successful rookie season and his journey. However, the older Surtain was asked about the upcoming season for the Dolphins, his first as a coach, and how they can compete with teams like the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      Lol…here’s the rest….

“We definitely have a great chance to derail those guys,” Surtain said. “Just being out there, just seeing what’s going on, when you have a guy like Tyreek Hill, it changes the whole complexion of the game. The thing Tua [Tagovailoa] gets a bad rap for – he’s had so many different coordinators his first three years, he has receivers in and out of lineups. I remember one game last year Tua was throwing to three running backs.

“When you have a guy like Tyreek Hill, obviously you have Jay (Jaylen Waddle), you have Cedrick Wilson, who we added, [Mike] Gesicki – I don’t know any quarterback that is great if he doesn’t have any weapons. You give Tua some weapons and see what happens. Obviously, the defense is stacked…”

Surtain believes in the improvement of Miami’s quarterback in the same way that a lot of fans and talking heads do. With a better offensive line, an offensive-minded head coach and more weapons, Tagovailoa can prove that he’s better than he’s been to this point in his career.

Whether or not that’s enough to dethrone the Bills as kings of the AFC East will take a lot more convincing.

Jason Sanders may have returned to his Mr. Perfect form

Flying under the radar due to all the other shinier and more flashier things that are going on at Dolphin’s training camp is a man that has decided that last year was an aberration. That the player you saw last year doesn’t exist anymore. That the player you’ll see this season is the guy you trusted with your life back in 2020. Of course, I’m talking about Jason Sanders, or Mr. Perfect as I called him once upon a time.

In 2022, Jason Sanders did the honorable thing and embraced the perfect lifestyle like how the late great Mr. Perfect, Curt Hennig, did when back in the 90s. Sanders couldn’t miss and wouldn’t miss. The guy even caught a touchdown pass, which we all playback and watch every few weeks or less, or at least I do.

Then last year something happened. Or, if you do some real deep dives, someone happened. Someone was inserted into Jason Sander’s life that changed him. This person made him not like Mr. Perfect but more like Buff Bagwell. This person was Michael Palardy.

Jason Sanders went from a 92% kicker to a 74% kicker in one season. Numbers like that haven’t been seen since Mike Vanderjacht. Palardy was the new holder and he wasn’t holding the ball the way Sanders needed it and he suffered. The Miami Dolphins suffered and in turn, we all suffered.

But now, the Miami Dolphins have a real professional punter in there who is built like an adonis. That man is Thomas Morstead and he will powerbomb you through the Earth’s crust if you try and tell him that the way the ball is held doesn’t matter to a kicker.

It certainly seems that Jason Sanders is enjoying Thomas Morstead holding the football because the guy has once again embraced that Perfect lifestyle.

Even last year, if a few more field goals go in, then the Dolphins may have actually made the playoffs. I don’t have to tell you how important kickers are in the NFL. Every single week games are decided by three points or less. Having a kicker with the talent that Jason Sanders is beyond clutch.

If Sanders has truly gone back to immersing himself in the Perfect lifestyle it will open up Mike McDaniel’s brain even more. A trustworthy Sanders means that McDaniel can be more aggressive around the 35-40 yard line of the opposition. Or the opposite can happen. Maybe he just takes the guaranteed three points and puts his bloodthirsty defense on the field.

In this world, you’re only as good as your options. Jason Sanders taking on the Mr. Perfect lifestyle and mantra gives the Miami Dolphins more options in winning games. I can’t wait to see him out there and doing it while he spits his gum in the air and swats it a mile.

I remember the big run the Mets made in 2015, bringing up Michael Conforto who was a rookie was a spark, and of course the Cespedes trade the biggest part. I think the acquisitions if Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe were huge pieces. Smart veteran ballplayers that knew what to do and how to get it done. They were huge, and I see a lot of similarities with guys like Darin Ruf, Tyler Naquin and Daniel Vogelbach. These guys have stepped up quickly and have remarkably surpassed the guys statistically that were here all season. I think they have more HR’s and RBI’s than J.D. Davis and Dom Smith.

Practice highlights from Barry Jackson and Daniel Oyefusi.
    —————–

The Dolphins’ final South Florida practice for nine days featured a bevy of highlight-worthy plays, including a spectacular interception from undrafted Oregon safety Verone McKinley III, a very good day by Tua Tagovailoa and the usual impact from Tyreek Hill.

    Recapping Day 10 of camp:

    STARS OF THE DAY
    ▪ Hill: He caught a bunch of passes for long gains, including a 50-yarder from Tagovailoa, a 30-yarder from Tagovailoa and a 45-yarder from Teddy Bridgewater. He also gained at least 15 yards on a run, his second rushing attempt in two practices.

Only one blemish: Hill dropped a pass across the middle; Jevon Holland would have annihilated him with a big hit in a real game.

    ▪ Tagovailoa: He made several excellent throws from 40 yards in receiver/defensive back drills. Two of those passes traveled 40 air yards and were caught by Hill (beating Noah Igbinoghene) and Cedrick Wilson Jr, who beat Trill Williams on the play.

Then he delivered the gorgeous bomb to Hill for a big gain in 11 on 11 drills.

Tagovailoa also read the blitz perfectly on an excellent 20-plus yard throw to Trent Sherfield, who outran defenders on a 60-yard TD play in 11 on 11 work.

Tagovailoa was slightly off on a couple of longer throws – including a 30-yarder over the middle that Jaylen Waddle couldn’t haul in with one hand. But then, he was very good in more 11 on 11 work – including a well-placed throw to Hill for 30 yards. And later, Tagovailoa escaped the pocket and threw a 10-yard TD to Wilson.

Tua threw what was essentially a Hail Mary into the end zone to end practice, and Jevon Holland intercepted it.

Your team is in first place in a pennant race possibly heading to playoffs and maybe a world series and he hasn’t pitched in over a year, and this is what wants to talk about?

I’m not sure he’s talking about it other than a business decision he made. If he has no more setbacks and finishes this season, I see Cohen wanting to pay him whatever he wants.
