2022 Season – Game 1 – Patriots @ Dolphins

The summer, for all intents and purposes, is over. Sad times for me, but the saving grace is always that with the end of summer comes the beginning of a new NFL season. That time has now arrived, and while in the north east, you can still wear shorts and a t-shirt, the “catch some rays” mindset is gone, and Sunday has become the most important day. Well sort of, and I only say that because the NFL has chosen to saturate and litter the week with games on Thursday, Sunday, Sunday Night and and then again on Monday Night. Which game is supposed to be the marquis matchup? The NFL doesn’t even know anymore. Regardless, Dolphins fans, Sunday is approaching, and we’ll get a look at our new squad against a very familiar squad, our division foe New England Patriots. Over the last 5 seasons, the Dolphins have won 6 and lost 4, but more recently, the Dolphins swept both games last season, 17-16 opening day, and then 33-24 in the season finale.

If I’m going to be perfectly honest, I’m not really sure what to expect from our team, mostly from the offensive side of the team. Will we still be a pass dominant team with Mike McDaniel? When we run the ball, will Chase Edmonds get the majority of carries, or will we be splitting it among 3 or 4 guys, including Raheem Mostert, Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed? Will the Dolphins be able to get the ball to speed merchant Tyreek Hill downfield? Jaylen Waddle caught 104 balls last season, will he still be a high volume receiver? TE Mike Gesicki was 2nd in targets (112) to Waddle’s (140), will he get even half as many this season? This game alone won’t tell the entire story because you gameplan against a specific opponent each and every week in the NFL. The funny thing is after watching (some) of the Bills vs Rams game, I see that the Bills just do the same thing every week and beat you. That’s when you know have an elite offense when you dictate the terms, and you don’t need to alter the gameplan to match up to a particular opponent.

I expect the defense to give the Patriots a tough time, I don’t expect any letdown on that side of the ball. I actually feel like we might have a special defense this season, and I think the NFL is kind of sleeping on us in that regard. The one caveat is that we’re out one of our top starters at CB, Byron Jones until week 5, so someone is going to have to step up and solidify that spot. Noah Igbinoghene will probably be that guy on the boundary while Nik Needham remains mostly inside. If Iggy struggles, there are a few guys who may get an opportunity, such as Keion Crossen and UDFA Kader Kohou, already somewhat of a fan fave. The Dolphins have relied on having that stout secondary with Howard and Jones at CB, so it will be interesting to see if we make some adjustments early on to protect the secondary by being less aggressive with blitzes which can leave DB’s vulnerable if they get burned. We have quietly added some nice veteran players to rush the passer and defend the edge such as Melvin Ingram and Trey Flowers. LB Jaelan Phillips is poised to have a great season and build on the success he had late in the season. DE’s Emmanuel Ogbah and Christian Wilkins were about as consistent as can be, and both had very good seasons last year. I believe that both Ogbah and Phillips will both have double digit sack counts this season, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Phillips exceeded 15. He just has such athletic ability, size, speed and a pretty good repertoire of pass rush moves for a young player.

Game 1 will be the first time we see WR Jaylen Waddle in game action. He may be the lucky recipient of a lot more one on one coverage, unless NE plays zone coverage, which is definitely a possibility. In any case, Waddle is just coming off a leg injury, so there may be a snap count for him, it’s a long season. Cedrick Wilson Jr., who came over from the Cowboys may see a lot of looks, especially if the defense gives Hill and Waddle extra attention. Perhaps the rookie Erik Ezukanma gets some playing time Sunday as well, especially if Waddle is limited. The biggest question of all and the most important one, is will the O-line be improved, will Tua have more time, and can the O-line give our RB’s some space to run. I realize that’s more than one question, but it’s really all one question, can the O-line get it done after struggling so much last season. Terron Armstead and Connor Williams will help that cause significantly, as and year LG is now surrounded by better players and can just focus on doing his own job. RT Austin Jackson will have the benefit of playing next to RG Robert Hunt who may have been the Dolphins best offensive lineman last season.

I think the Dolphins will win on Sunday, I think we’re the better team. The Patriots WR corps will have starters DeVante Parker and Nelson Agholor. We know Parker better than anyone, and know what he’s capable of and how he will be used, but when DeVante is healthy, he can still dominate. Damien Harris led the Pats last season with 202 carries for 929 yards and a ridiculous 15 TD’s. Rhamondre Stevenson got more action later in the season and proved to be a load to bring down. Both rushers averaged over 4.5YPC. The Patriots also use their two TE’s they picked up last offseason, Johnnu Smith and Hunter Henry, and the latter gets the majority of the targets. I think the Patriots will try to keep the ball away from our offense by running the ball as much as possible. If the Patriots have 40 or more rushes, that will probably mean we had a bad day, so let’s hope our run defense is up to the task. I think the additions of Ingram and Flowers will help defend the run and I think Elandon Roberts may have a ton of tackles. We know Raekwon Davis has lost a lot of weight, and while that may help his speed, it may not help him anchor the D-line, so they may be running right at Davis, which means #52 may be really busy!

IDK, they mentioned how quick Allen got the ball out, that was surely in the game plan to combat the pass rush, but I get what you’re saying, they mostly just do their thing and say try and stop us

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Bills sure could’ve used that punter last night

  5. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In one offseason they lost offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, OL coach Carmen Bricillo, QB coach Bo Hardegree, and WR coach Mick Lombardi to the Raiders. Veteran RB coach Ivan Fears also announced his retirement, punctuating a brutal collection of losses for the Patriots’ offensive staff.

  6. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Career slot corner Jonathan Jones has become the team’s #2 on the boundary, where explosiveness and ball skills should make up for his lack of size. Jones has been excellent as Tyreek Hill’s primary shadow since 2018, holding the receiver under 100 yards in each of their past three meetings despite playing on an island in the past two.

Think it’s telling, that we kept Gaskin, Ahmed and Tanner, even though we kept hearing about blocking

All 3 can be dangerous in the passing game

I like having an FB in on running plays, let’s see how we pass out of that set

    Reply

I found it interesting that the TE coach said he is very happy with Tanner’s blocking and how much better he has gotten since they started converting him to a TE.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rocko – I don’t get the excitement over Tanner. He’s got a lot of heavy lifting to do just to get on the field, being behind Gesicki, Smythe, Long and Carter. I mean maybe if there are injuries and/or a trade (Gesicki), he gets a chance, but considering what we have currently at WR, RB and even TE, I don’t see how he sees much action if any

I fell asleep in the 3rd quarter last night. I was exhausted. Got up at 4:30am to go fishing.

What I got from what I watched is the Bills are very well balanced. Adding Von Miller to the 3 edge/DE pass rushers they recently drafted in the top of the draft (Rousseau 1st round, Epenesa 2nd round (was projected 1st) and Boogie Bashum 2nd round) has put them over the top. Then, they have power up the middle with Phillips and Oliver. With that DL, they didn’t miss their #1 CB (Kupp is going to get his #’s no matter what). Hopefully Oliver’s ankle bothers him for several weeks. Before he went out, I thought Aaron Donald had switched team jerseys the way Oliver was playing.

I enjoyed watching Allen get hit and hit the ground hard but that fucker just gets up, smiles and keeps going. Hopefully it adds up over the season.

The 3 keys to beat the Bills will be to contain Allen, stop the run and take away Diggs.

I thought he would be cut. I agree he will most likely be buried in the depth chart and not get much action this season. I was only posting a reply to Steve about what I read in the interviews with the coaches yesterday. Embree is very high on Conner.

He is basically a FASTER Gesicki who doesn’t go down on first contact and SEEMS to be a willing blocker.

Gunners and — here’s the key — punt returners run the highest risk on said plays. That’s what the league statistics show, and they certainly make sense. The head of steam players have on screens cannot be compared to them storming down the field covering punts.”

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’d be curious to see the actual stats. It all sounds menacing when it’s talked about in general terms, but what are the numbers in terms of players injured vs plays run? The ‘higher rate’ might in actuality be negligible (i.e. 1 more player injured per hundred punt plays vs standard offense, or something like that.)

And if you break down the statement gunners and punt returners run the highest risk on said plays…well of course they do, it’s usually the gunners and returners that are tackling or being tackled. That’s like saying on pass plays WRs and defensive backs run the highest risk of injury…um yeah, lol.

  30. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

A lot of talk about Mostert’s speed, but “Edmonds has been timed at 15 mph on 23.3 percent of his carries, according to NFL’s Next Gen Stats, the highest rate of backs with at least 100 attempts.”

    ————–
    EXACTLY!

I’d rather see kickoff returns once again become a thing over punt returns.
There are so very many violent collisions on punt returns, more so than kick returns ever were. Reason being? The difference in yardage between the two.

That’s not to say that violent collisions never happened on kick returns, but at least IMO, far, far less.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m pretty sure the league transformed kickoffs into what they are now because they posed the highest injury risk of any football plays.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

JMO, I believe that was misdiagnosed. Even if I’m wrong, there stands the potential of punt returning becoming a dinosaur soon as well.

The game is changing rapidly before our very eyes.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Adding to that, I’ve never seen a kick return signaled for a ‘fair catch’. On punt returns, there is that rule. Why? Violent collisions with a helpless punt returner… and sometimes the returner gets ‘killed’, regardless.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

How can you agree emphatically with the league about punts being more dangerous plays than regular offense (which supports your argument about not using our best players as PRs) yet disagree if the league says kickoffs were the most dangerous plays of all? Seems like you’re taking the data they provide that supports your position, but disregarding their data that doesn’t, lol.

Kickoffs were more dangerous because you have a lot more players on both side involved in high velocity collisions. Not just the returner and tacklers, blockers and pursuers as well. It’s the major reason they’ve created starting boxes, no running starts, etc.

Either way, I think we’ll see punt returns neutered before we ever see kickoffs return to anything like they used to be.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        CavKong,

It doesn’t matter what I think or say regarding the NFL, man. But what I AM saying is that punt returns are going to be going away very soon.

I’m not an expert debater, nor do I try to be. All I can bring is what I see, hear, and feel… and I’m very often correct… even if accidental.

All PS players were still available to be poached from any team on Mondays (not sure, but maybe Sundays too if not elevated), so if a team really wanted your PS player, they could snatch them. All it really did was stop a team from grabbing your PS player mid-week after said team sustained an injury.

  65. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I agree with son that they will probably try to run at us 3040 times with their different running backs and then dink and dunk us or try for the big play action over the top if we start to bite too much on the run. That’s why I think our safeties are really really really going to come into play.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah and if they run 30-40 times we probably lost. That’s why I said LOS is the key, if they run on us and stop our run game that’s not good.

Major League Baseball passed a sweeping set of rules changes it hopes will fundamentally overhaul the game, voting Friday to implement a pitch clock and ban defensive shifts in 2023 to hasten the game’s pace and increase action.

The league’s competition committee, composed of six ownership-level representatives, four players and one umpire, approved a pitch clock of 15 seconds with empty bases and 20 seconds with runners on, a defensive alignment that must include two fielders on each side of the second-base bag with both feet on the dirt as well as rules limiting pickoff moves and expanding the size of bases.

How was the streaming for opening day Cav? I think there was a hack on the server and things are slowly getting back to normal on Platinum it seems. There was a link up for Bills game but I watched a 1 hour highlight show on Sky (fortunately). Trounced the SB Champs whilst making tons of mistakes ……. the pace has been set.

Anyone going to the fest and NOT wearing a Zach #54 (reminder – there is a drive for this game for as many fans as possible to wear 54 jerseys to support Zach’s HoF entry) this (below) could be a close alternate?

I could hear and feel the game from my house, lots of energy but couldn’t capitalize on it despite the shit referees who called back two long UCF TD’s on bullshit penalties.

yes WYO, you are correct, but Gaskin and Chase were listed on the injury report,
so even if they are now ok to play, it still means they’re not 100%.
And Ingold was on it, too, and he hasn’t played a down since last year.
And I watched Mostert in preseason, and he did NOT look 100%.
He hasn’t played since last year either except for 4 or 5 plays.

On Friday, head coach Mike McDaniel provided an update on Davis and explained when the injury occurred.

“There was a little something that we’re taking a look at,” McDaniel said. “We have enough good players on the team, so we don’t want to put a player out there that might not be able to do right. We wouldn’t be doing right by him if he wouldn’t be able to be full go. We’ll see how he reacts today and make that decision then. It was something that kind of popped up yesterday, and we’ll see how much the ramifications after he gets moving today.”

Those in attendance at the portion of Friday’s practice that was open to the media reported that Davis was stretching and wearing a compression sleeve on his right leg.

      ugh
While Davis isn’t the first name thought of when it comes to playmakers on Miami’s defense, he certainly makes an impact. The Dolphins’ defense gave up 35.3 rushing yards per game more when Davis was out with an injury last season.
