2022 Season – Game 3 – Bills @ Dolphins

I’m going to admit that I have flip-flopped on my direction of this article about 3 times before I started typing. Last night before I actually fell asleep I do some deep thinking, and I was picturing in my mind the Dolphins scoring lots of points and outlasting the Bills at Hard Rock. When I woke up I had more of a dread feeling about this game, the one that every Dolphins fan has (or should have) that the Bills have absolutely owned us over the last 3 seasons and if we’re being realistic, we haven’t belonged on the same field with them. If I wrote the article just then, I’d have us losing, and by double digits. Now I sit here clear headed, caffeinated, and I hope accurate, as I feel like this going to be a wild shootout in Miami, minimal defense, a whole lot of offense, possibly near record breaking, and the Dolphins somehow topple the big, bad Bills. One thing might disrupt that, there are thunderstorms in the forecast, and that would much more derail our offense than the Bills. We’ve seen Tua fail in sloppy weather, so I’m hoping that doesn’t come into play here.

Both teams are hurting on defense, more specifically in the secondaries. Dolphins CB Xavien Howard is going to play, but he’s dealing with a groin injury. We’re already missing CB Byron Jones, but I can’t imagine us trying to cover Stefon Diggs and Gabe Jackson with Nik Needham, and Kader Kohou. For the Bills, S Micah Hyde is OUT. CB Dane Jackson is questionable with a neck injury. The Bills may decide to let Jackson heal up as they have with S Micah Hyde, which would leave CB Siran Neal as the likely starter, mostly a STs guy who has played less than 20% of the snaps on defense over his 4 year career with the Bills. We saw what happened last week against the Ravens, but one major difference, this Bills defense can bring lots of pressure from their front 7, especially considering the addition of All Pro DE Von Miller. Adding Miller to this defense gives 2nd year DE Gregory Rousseau less attention, and this Bills defense already has 9 sacks in just 2 games. Our O-line played fantastic during the comeback last week, but this will be a huge test for this group.

OK, so let’s talk about last week! Yes, I was in the process of losing my my mind and throwing in the white towel and in between a multitude of curses muttering in between gritted teeth something along the lines of “same old Dolphins getting mauled by the Ravens” and then IT happened. The best comeback in team history and among the best in the history of the NFL, erasing a 21 point deficit with less than 1 quarter left. Our two ultra fast WR’s were just running by people, sometimes before the catch, and sometimes after the catch. Tua was masterful in getting the ball out to these guys. Sure, some passes were underthrown, but I’ve seen Mahomes do the very same with Tyreek Hill, and no one blinks. Just get it there, and he did. Some of Tua’s throws were just fantastic, throwing into tight windows like to Waddle and Gesicki in the endzone, and letting your receiver make the play. When it was all over, we knocked off the Ravens in their house, a house of horrors for us as we have never won at M&T Stadium. Actually, we’ve been thoroughly dismantled at M&T Stadium, and at home in Miami as well. This was such a big win, but it’s just one game, we must continue this type of play against the Bills.

We know Josh Allen is going to run, the question is can we limit him, or hit him so hard he stops running. Our pass rush has been anemic, invisible and disappointing. We have 2 sacks in 2 games, and one of them was from the safety spot, a huge strip sack by S Brandon Jones. I mean it wasn’t just me that expected so much more from Jalean Phillips, and then we added Melvin Ingram and Trey Flowers and added them to Emmanuel Ogbah, who would probably crack double digit sacks after finishing with 9 sacks both last year and in 2020. So far, we haven’t gotten the job done and the pressure, forgetting sacks for a moment, hasn’t been there. That has to change this week against the Bills. If Josh Allen has all the time in the world to throw he will shred us. Our front 7 will also have a tough assignment to stop Josh Allen from running wild, and also keeping an eye on Devin Singletary and Zack Moss as outlets. We’ve scuffled badly against this offense, getting pushed around with Allen looking like the bully on the block, and our defenders looking like the poor bullied victim. One thing that could change that somewhat is our offense lighting up the scoreboard. If we can be the aggressor, and score TD’s each possession, that might take away that part of their offense, where Josh Allen just runs us over.

I’m curious to see if our offense is going to be the same high flying aerial attack, or will our RB’s have a larger role this week, both rushing, and probably more likely catching the ball. If our WR’s can get open like last week we might not see much of a running game, but if Tua doesn’t have time to throw like he did last week, the RB’s will play a larger role, both in pass protection and as outlet receivers when Tua won’t have the time to go downfield. We know in theory HC Mike McDaniel wants to run the ball, but once again I point out our backs need space to operate, so short quick passes with a LB in coverage to speedy RB’s like Raheem Mostert can break a defense. I think Mostert might have a huge game Sunday but that’s mainly if we don’t/can’t give Tua time. I’d be shocked if we beat the Bills with 30 carries and just kept the ball away, I can’t even fathom that happening, but who could have seen the improbable comeback last week? Mike McDaniel might just keep everyone guessing. Either way, I hope Mike McDaniel just keeps winning!

News about Bills injuries getting better and better, if not this week when?

  2. steveccnv says:

3 of the 4 starting DBs are out for Bills, seems about like last week

That will give us a chance to score, but we still have to stop them

Game is in our Ds hands, it’s there’s to win, high scoring or low they’ll need to win it

    • bailbondmike says:

Like you said Phillips being out is huge also. Ed Oliver missed last weeks game with an ankle injury. Not sure of his status this weekend but sure he will be in the game.

    • Rockphin says:

Man, that means we will have an * next to the win because Tua will be throwing to only wide open receivers again….

      Silly media

      • The Flying Pig says:

        I’ll take it

      • steveccnv says:

        Lol Rock

They really should read what they say about us and keep it in mind, when watching another game, when they see Brady throw a ball that’s not a spiral and flutters, Allen throwing too far, Mahones throwing one of those no lookers to no one in particular

  3. Rockphin says:

Meanwhile, Bills coach Sean McDermott said on Friday that safety Micah Hyde (neck), cornerback Dane Jackson (neck) and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (hamstring) will miss Sunday’s game.

so you say we have a shot?

  4. steveccnv says:

This game needs to be taken over by our vets

Howard, Ogbah, Ingram, Flowers and our 3 big guys upfront need to Buffalo the Bills, then Kohou needs to do what he do

  5. The Flying Pig says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bills lead at half but we win the game

  6. steveccnv says:

Add to the Bills injuries, Miami in Sept, rain in forecast, Bills coming off of Monday night game, and our confidence sky high after Tua’s light coming on

Not sure what else we can ask for, besides the great one not playing

Coach praised Tua’s ownership of navigating the pocket both on his timing and rhythm, but also being a play maker and getting off the spot. He says he doesn’t think there’s been any sacks that he would attribute to Tua, says pocket management is a strong point of his game.

He deserves the attention and respect of the opposing team so you have to plan accordingly regardless, Coach says about Von Miller. Says you would think Miller has been playing in this defense for a long time with the way he’s playing right now.

Coach on opposing injury announcements impacting a game plan: one of the challenging parts of their defense is they don’t really change without one or two guys. Their whole defense is productive because it’s a team defense.

  8. bailbondmike says:

Bunch of good college games on tomorrow.

  9. boulderfinfan says:

Good work on the article Mike. Do you think our chances of winning the game higher if it’s a shoot out or a defensive game? I personally don’t think our defense is gonna stop their offense. They haven’t done it for a few years. If we win this game it’s because our offense kept up with their offense.

  10. bailbondmike says:

I hope we chip block the hell out of Von Miller and wear his ass down.

Mike, I forgot to mention this in my first reply to this new article. The Bills have had our number for the most part of 5 years. They’ve beaten us 7 in a row and 9 out of the last 10. It’s been more brutal with this current Bills team with Josh Allen at the helm, but it’s been going on far too long. This would be a huge win for us. 3-0 in the AFC and 2-0 in the division would be awesome! 🙂

    • stangerx says:

It would be huge, but Bills are a 5.5-6 point favorite at Hardrock for what should be a heat game for a reason. Means they would be like a 12 point favorite in Buffalo.

      • Tim Knight says:

  45. steveccnv says:

ESPN is trying to sell us on Brissett, saying he’s been the best QB on the field thru 3 weeks

Mayfield. Flacco and Trubisky, that ain’t saying much

Someone said Clev could be 3-0, but they’re not and they lost maybe to the easiest team on their schedule, when the game was over

Before the season they talked about the AFC being loaded, I said we’ll see, well now we’re seeing it ain’t that great

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Brissett is playing pretty well so far he has a legit line and running game and he’s throwing the ball accurately and on time for the most part.

    • Tim Knight says:

It’s still early and teams are just getting into a football groove with limited PS snaps for most stop players. Lots of teams are already dealing with injuries. I say the next few games we start to get a better feel for where teams are at.

      • Tim Knight says:

We’re very likely to be playing the best team in the league this Sunday. They just look like a juggernaut continuing on what they’ve built the last few years. I hope we’re getting close to that.

      • son of a son of a shula says:

        We’ll see

    • Tim Knight says:

I had a vision it’s 24-24 in the 4th quarter :36 and running, 3rd and 7 at the Bills 17, and once again we try to go for the kill. Tua escapes the pressure and hits Tyreek for the TD. Now there’s :26 seconds left for the Bills to try and tie it. There was no way my vision was going to allow it to be totally easy. LOL

      • son of a son of a shula says:

  51. son of a son of a shula says:

Tim, I’m seeing Phillips move around quite a bit so far this year, much more than last year maybe he’s adjusting to a new role. He’s coming out of Wake’s old spot as opposed to the right side almost exclusively last year. You still see him flying around but he has to start getting home.

    • Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Ingram has done a really nice job in the rotation. Van Ginkel’s reps have been limited due to having appendix surgery but he’s played. Waiting to see if Trey Flowers joins the mix. The entire defense needs to tighten things up and make offenses work for everything. We’ve been a bit leaky.

    • mf13ss says:

Is Jordan Poyer OUT for Sunday? I hadn’t read that.

    • Tim Knight says:

That’s a matchup we need to exploit. The Bills have arguably the best Safety tandem in the league with Hyde and Poyer. Then two rookie corners. No Phillips or Oliver either. Take advantage of it even though if we win the pundits will say that’s why. Okay that’s probably true. Boo Hoo!!!! LOL

I’d show we’re going deep early but run the ball instead on the first drive. Then make them inch up and hit them over the top. All of this on the first drive. 🙂

  53. son of a son of a shula says:

That’s a huge coaching difference, MM is prepared with plays in the event his guys go down big. He says run Fuck it and gets his team in a position to win instead of saying fuck it, he calls and runs Fuck it. Big difference.

  57. mf13ss says:

While I’d absolutely love to know that we beat a 100% healthy Buffalo Bills team, I also think it’s good for Tua’s (and the whole team’s) confidence to flourish early on. We’ll take whatever we can at the moment, so as to parlay that confidence down the stretch.

We’ve got to stay healthy, too.

    • Tim Knight says:

Okay I’ll play. 31-24 Dolphins. The Bills will make their plays. But I think the injuries they have on defense will be massive mismatches against Hill, Waddle and company. Go Phins!!!!

  63. mf13ss says:

So I was listening to ESPN Radio earlier, and they brought up a very sound point: the Bills generally rush 4 (no blitzing) and keep their secondary back. If Terron Armstead ends up missing this game on Sunday, it’s going to really suck for us.

I DO believe Armstead starts/plays, so there’s that. So for whatever it’s worth, I think we need to get to the point on Defense where we can rush 4 and they get home on the QB. Too often, we rely on the blitz (esp Cover-0) to mask our deficiencies in terms of pass-rushing ability.

Yes, we need Jaelen Phillips to show up before too much longer. If he takes the next step forward, he and Melvin Ingram will be a PAIN(!) to stop. It would be great if it begins this Sunday.

    • mf13ss says:

To BB Mike, I HEAR ya, Brother, on Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer… what an outstanding prospect!

However, I think we need another elite pass-rusher to augment Phillips in the future… at least at this moment in time and only 2 games into our season.

      • mf13ss says:

If Steve Ross had only kept his dick-fingers out of tampering with Tom Brady… SMH. We could have moved up to draft the best pass-rusher in the 2023 Draft.

        OR…

If Tua ends up getting killed via injury this season, we could have moved up to draft the best QB in the 2023 Draft.

A Norte Dame TE is always a good bet and you can never draft enough DL.
There’s another TE making noise in college but Mayer is your standard issue ND TE a la Rudolph, Eifert, Bavaro and Dave Casper and on and on not the least of which is Durham Smythe

Naples, I hate saying this before he does it but check this out. Judge sits at 60 homers at the moment including through tonight. If he were to hit 61, which seems likely, he’ll have hit 61 sixty one years after Maris hit 61 in ‘61.
    Maris was number 9
    Judge wears 99

  67. son of a son of a shula says:

Judge is currently tied with Babe Ruth for not only second most homers in a season by a Yankee but the entire history of the American League

Congrats to Pujols who hit 699 and 700 tonight, making him just the 4th member of the 700 club, and the only player besides Ruth and Aaron in the club asterisk free.

That’s awesome! Great player and played a long time.

Yep, good stuff. I’m happy he hit the milestone. It looked out of reach just a little over a month ago. He’s experiencing kind a last minute resurgence before retirement. I’m so happy he came back to the Cards for his final season.

I haven’t read the reviews leading up to this week’s game, but I’m sure they can all be tossed after the injury news from Bills, they’ve lost their biggest advantage on D of being able to get home rushing 4

Tua’s 1st game against Bills he was bad with ball security he did have 361 yards passing, but a rookie, we aren’t fielding that O on Sunday

Week 8 last year we lost 26-11, week 2 he, got hurt early

This week we’re fielding a vastly improved team, than the others Tua played with

I don’t think past blowouts should be in the conversation Sunday, not even I hope we keep it close

We should only be thinking about the W

  83. steveccnv says:

Tua became the 3rd Fins QB to throw for 6tds

Anyone remember Griese’s 6 td game

  84. The Flying Pig says:

  85. steveccnv says:

Bills pass rush, they’ve been great so far without blitzing, but they did go against Ryan Statuehill and Stafford not exactly a pocket presence guru with a rookie LT

With Oliver and Phillips out and most starting DBs, it will be different Sunday

  86. Rockphin says:

I hope we have an old time Marino / Kelly barn burner where both QB’s throw for over 350 yds but Tua plays a bit more efficiently and that along with our D makes the difference for a W but Tua still at the top of the stats to rub it in the faces of the haters

  87. CavalierKong says:

It’s all lined up for us. The team needs to go out there and get it done.

    • CavalierKong says:

It still comes down to stopping the Bills offense though. They are mostly intact, and if they put up 40, it doesn’t really matter how banged up their defense is because our offense will still need to perform at a really high level to win.

  88. CavalierKong says:

    UK, got your message. Cheers

UK, I remember an Ouzo hangover when I was in Greece in the mid 90’s. We conducted a major exercise with the Greek and German militaries. At the end we had a huge blowout. The Geeks had cases of Ouzo and Mythos beer. They grilled tons of kabobs with Greek salad. The German’s cooked up a ton of sausages with peppers and onions and brought 8 kegs of beer (in wooden kegs). My unit had 30 racks of ribs and 10 cases of Budweiser.

I helped our cooks cooking ribs. I got so fucked up grilling while drinking German beer and doing shots of Ouzo. I had the spins for hours until I finally passed out. Next day was a nightmare as we had to get up and start breaking camp, cleaning and packing equipment and gear. We were a full functioning aid station, so I am talking field lab and X-ray equipment, the whole 9 yards (4 shipping containers of medical equipment and supplies. On top of that, we had to endure the lengthy US Customs and Agriculture inspections. It was, at least, a 14-hour day of physical work with a pounding head. Piss poor planning on my part knowing in advance what was instore the next day.

Never drank Ouzo again. I actually brought a bottle home with me. It’s been 26 years since and it is still sitting in my home office unopened. LOL

ROCK I THINK YOU’VE hit on a VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR in this game. WHY OH WHY did Steve Ross encourage or allow these THREE sporting events to be scheduled just prior to Miami’s MOST IMPORTANT HOME GAME OF THE SEASON????

Is it GREED or STUPIDITY?? – – My guess is it’s BOTH!!
    ———————-
AND, YES, it IS A NEGATIVE FACTOR for the speedier Dolphins in this contest. On a dry, well preserved, field, I’d favor Miami by double digits, given Buffalo’s rash of injuries. BUT, on an unknown to torn up and “mushy track,” I’m taking the Dolphins to win by just 3 points.

A RECENT Radar view of Tropical Storm Ian makes it look like an amorphous blob, not an organized storm system. However, the NHC has an enviable record of accurate forecasting in recent years, so I expect this storm to become a hurricane and strike within 150 miles of Tampa Bay later this coming week.
    ————–
I’ve previously experienced a whole bunch of hurricanes since my family move to south Florida in 1959. When my job took me to Tampa, I was told several times that Tampa Bay had not been hit by a hurricane since the 1920’s. Well, this will be my SECOND hurricane in the last 5 years here. And I’m hoping it’s my LAST. And if it’s like the one in 2017, things will be fine. We only had minor damage in my neighborhood. However, Naples and surrounding areas took quite a pounding.
