2022 Season – Game 5 – Dolphins @ Jets

If you look at the Dolphins record of 3-1, independent of the current state of the team, you have to be thrilled, considering the teams we’ve played the first 4 games. Wins against the Patriots, Ravens and Bills are all huge victories. However, the season has taken an unfortunate turn for the worse after the loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, and more importantly the loss of starting QB Tua Tagovailoa. It’s not that Teddy Bridgewater isn’t capable, and realistically, it’s possible that with a full week of starters reps in practice that Teddy Bridgewater’s play exceeds that of Tua Tagovailoa. Still, there was a good feeling here, with Tua succeeding, finally playing well and silencing his critics, an exceptionally long line of them. The Tua Tagovailoa story isn’t over, but it’s on hold as he mends from back, ankle and more seriously, a terrible concussion.

As we begin the 2nd quarter of the season, ( it used to be quarters but now we play 17 games), we’re really a banged up unit. We travel to New Jersey to take on the high flying Jets. This is a spunky team, they’ve had 2 big wins, 2 comebacks against AFC North teams, the Cleveland Browns and then last week, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jets have their young starting QB back in the lineup and Zach Wilson helped the Jets steal a victory from the Steelers last week. The 3rd place Jets are ahead of the New England Patriots as I predicted and I think they are a team on the rise. RB Breece Hall, who many here liked (Especially Naples) is becoming the primary back, taking away touches from former starter Michael Carter. Hall got 17 carries in the win last week and is primed for lots of action against the Dolphins. Hall is averaging a nice 4.7 YPC while Carter only 3.7. Hall also has more targets in the passing game so for all intents and purposes, Hall is the lead back. Rookie WR Garrett Wilson has the most targets and receptions of the wideouts, 39 and 20 respectively, for 255 yards and 2 TD’s with 12.8 YPR. TE Tyler Conklin has the most receptions though with 21, and 1 TD.

The injury report heavily favors the New York Jets, they have only 5, and none of the injuries are serious enough to have any of those players in doubt for Sunday’s game. The Dolphins however, have a whopping 17 players listed. The most obvious one is QB Tua Tagovailoa who is ruled OUT with a concussion. CB Xavien Howard has two sore groin muscles and is QUESTIONABLE. CB Keion Crossen did not practice with glute and shoulder injuries.WR Jaylen Waddle also has a sore groin but Waddle returned to practice on Thursday. LT Terron Armstead is QUESTIONABLE with a toe injury he has been dealing with for most of the season and he did not practice this week, but he has been playing this way the entire season, and practice is less important for this talented veteran.

I just have to speak my mind about Tua, mostly because I find it dumbfounding the how the landscape changes so often with support, or hate for this kid, and why. Eliminating the Dolphins fanbase and reporters and commentators and experts of all kinds (eye-roll), seeing the experts and fans of other teams that routinely trashed Tua are all of a sudden so utterly concerned about his health and the “barbaric” treatment he has received from the Miami Dolphins coaches and organizations. What so many are saying is that it was clearly obvious that Tua was concussed in the Bills game after his head hit the turf and when getting up he stumbled and then stumbled again, which certainly could be indicative of a concussion. However, and I stress this, he was cleared by a neurologist hired by the NFL to make sure the player is healthy enough to return. So there are basically two camps here, the ones that think the Dolphins should have realized the expert is wrong because they saw the stumble and should have kept Tua out the rest of the game and the following week for his safety. Then there’s the camp that believes the Dolphins somehow skirted the protocol altogether, and perhaps even influenced this neurologist to risk his career in order to allow Tua to play. I honestly find all this absurd, everyone is an expert because of what they saw and that’s the end of that. I’m well aware the NFLPA fired this neurologist and I think the NFLPA is just cutting their losses and trying to save face on what looks on the surface to be negligence on their part. Simple as that. Oh yeah, and stop blaming the Miami Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel who for all the world seems like a fantastic human being who appears to love this kid (Tua) and I don’t believe for a millisecond that McDaniel would put Tua in harms way. End of story!

I don’t feel especially confident about this game. My hope is Teddy Bridgewater looks significantly better than he did in relief last week. He’s a veteran guy who I’m sure has digested the offense and a full week of starters reps in practice should have him ready to go. I don’t like where we’re at right now as far as injuries. I was sure CB Byron Jones was ready to be the lockdown corner opposite X or whoever plays for X, but now it’s likely that both will be out. Kader Kohou has been a nice surprise, but pushing him into a starting role sometimes reveals those blemishes. Nik Needham always seems to step up and do what is needed, and he may be starting as well. I love both of those guys, but Kohou and Needham is a big dropoff from X and Jones. S/DB Eric Rowe has been rotating in and doing a pretty good job and CB Noah Igbinoghene will probably be active if X is out. Has anyone seen WR Cedrick Wilson??? Holy invisible man Batman, what happened here? I think a bunch of us expected Wilson to have a big impact, but so far we have 3 targets and 2 unforgettable receptions for 20 yards. What I do like on offense is that RB Raheem Mostert is slowly becoming the lead back. He’s electric, and if we can get him a crease, he can do serious damage.

Assuming X doesn’t play, does DC Josh Boyer dial back all those blitzes which leave the DB’s one on one coverage duties? We blitz more than anyone, but this week if X is OUT, I hope we consider not doing as many as we have. Zack Wilson is a pretty athletic QB and although he’s not a running QB per se, he is quick, fast and elusive and if he escapes the blitz, can do damage with his legs. The Dolphins have only 7 sacks this season, way below the way the team was playing the second half of last season. The good news is we started off slow in the sack department last year too, with 6 in the first 4 games. I usually have an idea as to what I’m going to see in our game, but I just don’t have any idea what to expect. Will we play it close to the vest with Tua out and injuries to our secondary? Will Teddy Bridgwater be tossing bombs left and right to Hill and Waddle or will we set a 2022 high for RB carries between Mostert, Edmonds and Ingold? Will we blitz relentlessly or be more conservative? We will definitely find out!

Nice write up Mike. TBH I was telling myself if we’re 2-2 after the first four games I’d be happy. But now I’m afraid of the Jets. I think it’s gonna be hard fought game and the defense needs to show up.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Boulder – In the current state of affairs, this could be a tough game. I still think we have the better team, and if our defense decides to wake up and remember how to get to the QB, we could be dangerous. Amazing that Ogbah and Phillips have one sack each. I was expecting big seasons from both of these guys, and due to Melvin Ingram, AVG is all but forgotten.

Great write Mike E — just sorry after starting 3-0 we even have to worry about the Jets, but we should given the injuries. But then that might have been what the Ravens said about us.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Stanger – it’s definitely a timing thing. With Tua as he was, there was magic in the air. I feel like that got sucked out when he went down. Once again, hoping Teddy B looks more prepared and can run this offense w/o a major dropoff.

  15. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    I’m sick of concussion-gate.

** Tua just got pushed backwards and did not land violently.
** Tua had a great 2nd half when he came back.
** Even if he’d been ruled out, he would have been back for the Bengals.

So he takes the crusher hit on Thurday Night regardless. And that hit is the obvious problem.

  16. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Good write as always, Mike E!

However, ya stated: “I’m well aware the NFL fired this neurologist and I think the NFLPA is just cutting their losses and trying to save face on what looks on the surface to be negligence on their part.”

Not trying to be a prick, just trying to set the record straight: it was the NFLPA who fired the indy neurologist, not the NFL. That makes a HUGE difference in all actuality.

As you stated, I think Betty Teddy could carry us to a win under the current circumstances… just manage the game, throw deep when necessary (we saw he can do it last week), and don’t do anything foolish like playing hero.

If it were me, I’d sit X to allow him to heal. I don’t fear the young Zach Wilson and would expect a medium dose of the Cover-0. Contain the outside runs from Breece Hall and Michael Carter and we’re golden: they’re NOT running between the Tackles against us.

I am SOOOOO with ya on Tua!!! I made a post last week about the media suddenly caring so much about Tua, after they’ve trashed him to death as essentially irrelevant, a bust, and absolutely inconsequential… funny how their narrative has changed. Holy hypocritical, Batman!

    Again, good write, buddy!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I did state that the NFLPA was just cutting its losses and trying to save face, I just left the PA off the first part, but thanks!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      We knew that was coming.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This is my totally uninformed opinion of the disagreement about the protocol:

The NFL thinks the Dolphins followed protocol and the NFLPA thinks they didn’t.

I think the protocol allows (or did allow) for the player to return based on a judgement call after certain tests are conducted and assessments made, and the NFLPA thinks the video of Tua stumbling was enough to keep him out of the game, therefore they believe protocol wasn’t followed.

Additionally, I think that was why they fired the independent guy as well. They believe his job was to keep Tua out based on the video evidence no matter what the follow up tests indicated.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The protocol is clear. The team doctor has final say not the independent doctor

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That’s not what I’m saying. I’ve also read the very abridged version of the protocol that is available to the public and know what it says.

I’m saying f the the independent guy says there are signs of head trauma, that player isn’t going back in the game, guaranteed, even if it’s ‘the team doctor’s final call’.

Because if the team doctor does that, that would not be following the protocol that is laid out. I’m saying the independent guy was supposed to make sure Tua didn’t go back out based on the video and that is why the NFLPA says protocol wasn’t followed.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Therein lies the problem. The NFLPA agreed to the terms of the protocol. If they want to change it, do so, but don’t make any team that follows that protocol look like the bad guy.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I posted the portion of the protocol last night. It is unequivocal that team physician makes call not the UNC. I think the union wants to now change that to what you saying

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

As I said, I also read that and know what it says and I know what it means. You’re dismissing what I’m saying without understanding it because you are focused on me saying the independent guy makes the call. I’m am not saying that.

You really think the independent guy has no say (practical or literal) in whether the player returns or not. If the independent guy says “Tua has a massive head injury” you think the team doctor would overrule that and say “nope, he’s good send him out anyway”? no effing way. That would amount to the Dolphins not following the protocol.

No, the whole point of the independent guy is to have a 2nd and unbiased opinion. If both doctors don’t agree, that player wouldn’t be going back out regardless of the team doctor having ‘the final call’.

And that is why the independent was fired by the NFLPA. And that is why he was uncooperative or hostile, because he examined him and knew it had nothing to do with his head, but also knew this was a witch hunt.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

That is not what I am saying. I truly don’t know what that doctor and or if he was dismissed because he may not have advocated against the team doctors position which is what I suspect happened. My instinct is that the UNC thought there was a concussion but the team doctor did not and the Union is upset that the UNC did not prevent from going back in when he knew better. I am very interested to hear the UNC’s side of things but he is apparently not talking

and the decision to return a player to a game remains exclusively within the professional judgment of the Head Team Physician or his/her physician designee responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of concussion.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If that’s the case why even have the NFLPA physician? That doesn’t make much sense.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

      See above.

You’re crazy if you think a team doctor is going to put a player back on the field if the independent guy diagnoses a head injury. He’d be jeopardizing his own career. Again, it’s the whole point of having him there.

Both doctors must have agreed it wasn’t a head injury, or do you think the independent guy diagnosed a head injury, the team doctor disagreed, and the NFLPA fired the independent anyway 🙄

See my reply above. I really would love to hear from UNC. I can tell you from own personal experience in dealing with expert witnesses that doctors often disagree with one another but I do agree that a doctor does not want to risk his license

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Your reply above is what I have flippin’ been saying, with the slight difference that I’m betting the indep. and the team doctor agreed in their assessment. Otherwise, why fire the indep. for not keeping Tua out when, as you’ve said 10 times now, he doesn’t have any say in that, lol.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Also, do you think McDaniel would put Tua back out there if one of the doctors thought there might be a head injury?

It may be naive, but I believe McDaniel when he says he would never do that.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The Club physician remains responsible for all final decisions regarding Return-to-Play. However, the Club physician will consult with his/her sideline UNC team member prior to reaching his/her decision. If the sideline UNC disagrees with the Club physician’s decision to return the player to play or remove the athlete, the sideline UNC will be given an opportunity to explain the basis of his/her opinion. This will be discussed in a collegial fashion in private as to why the player should or should not be returned to the game. The Club physician will communicate his or her final decision to the player.

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We now know anything that looks like a neurological injury, that player will not be able to return to the game. Then they’ll be tested all week. Maybe even a rule that they must miss at least one other game. It’s going to become much more protective.

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The crazy thing is Kong, The NFL PA fired the UNC but the UNC had no power to do anything that’s the ultimate crazy part. The UNC could have jumped up and down screaming and crying and would still have no recourse other than sending a report to the NFL PA and NFL.

He obviously did not therefore he agreed with sending him back into the game by default. If you don’t think we would have heard that he wanted to keep him out by now one would be crazy.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That is exactly the way I read it too. The NFLPA says ‘mistakes were made’ or something to that effect.

I believe the mistakes that were made were- based on the video, and regardless of what the halftime assessment told him, the UNC was supposed to diagnose a head injury which would have kept Tua out of the game, and he didn’t.

Obviously, we’re speculating, but I can’t see the NFLPA that quickly throwing the guy under the bus and firing him if he actually did diagnose a head injury.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

But as ‘Ken posted above he could diagnose it all day long and he would have no power to stop the team physician from sending him back in.

There are actually 3UNC‘s in attendance at every game. One on each side line and one in the video booth.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Right, I was never disputing that or saying that isn’t the case. The convo seemed to get hung up on that point which was never in dispute. Chalk it up to poor communication in my original post.

  36. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I just read the entire (very long) rule and the purpose of the UNC’s is basically be extra sets of eyes to help identify and diagnose trauma. They have no power to do anything about keeping a player out.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe the way the system was set up was at fault. Okay, correct it and move on.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

        Exactly!

And stop spinning bad PR by releasing that you fired the guy as if he did something wrong. The whole situation stinks to high heaven. And not from the Dolphins side. They are being unfairly prosecuted and persecuted.

  37. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I hope everybody puts their phones on silent tonight around 2 AM……

  38. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So the intent of my original post was to read between the lines based on the actions of the parties.

I understand why Ken got hung up on this from my post:

“Additionally, I think that was why they fired the independent guy as well. They believe his job was to keep Tua out based on the video evidence no matter what the follow up tests indicated.”

Because it seems like I’m saying the UNC makes the call.

I was speaking with the assumption that we all know and understand what has been stated on this blog a dozen times in the last week, that it’s the team doctor’s call…but practically, if the UNC makes a head trauma diagnosis, that player isn’t going back in- or at least he shouldn’t be. That is the way the system is set up, and the NFLPA’s actions (firing him) and statements (about the UNC not knowing what his role was) seem to bear that out.

Now if the NFLPA came out and backed their UNC, I’d say that would represent a bigger much problem for us, but that isn’t what happened.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s also why I’m not worried about the investigation and being punished. Besides the fact the NFL has already said it appears the Fins followed protocol, the NFLPA’s actions speak for themselves. They they threw their guy under the bus just a couple of days after the Cincy game, lol.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The NFL and NFLPA don’t want this type of thing happening again. Fix it and move on. Be more protective and every team knows going in what the deal is. Head trauma will be treated more seriously.

Phillips told the media this offseason that he wanted to improve his play against the run, and he’s done just that. Pro Football Focus has improved his run defense grade from 44.8 last year to 59.6 in 2022.

PFF also believes that Phillips has improved as a pass rusher, jumping from 61.3 to 70.3 with his best game of the season being the last (78.3). According to ESPN, the only players with a higher pass rush win rate on the edge than Phillips are Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett, Micah Parsons and Von Miller.

I have had a hate/hate relationship with ESPN for years now.
I hate how biased they are.
    and
I hate how shoddy their journalism is.

They’re too lazy to actually learn anything about a team or player
before they release statements of serious impact
as if they’d personally interviewed stake-holders or were an eyewitness.

But they didn’t and they weren’t.

  83. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

But that’s only part of the problem.

Social media is another huge part.

Any dingbat know-nothing can tweet or post
    their wildest opinions
with zero expertise on the subject.

    Then other wanna-bes RT that,
and in no time the hashtag is
    TRENDING
and all the other dingbats say “see, it’s trending on Twitter,
    so it must be true.”

If I were a HC, I’d tell my players to stay off social media,
so as not to get distracted or get their confidence hurt.

I think a social media smear campaign
can make a kid in the NFL over-extend himself
    and press during games and
this raises the risk of INTs, but also injuries.

I think it affected Tua, and it might also ruin Gesicki
if someone doesn’t take care of him while they are coaching him up.

I think it hurts baseball hitters and pitchers, too.

I think it shortened Mark Sanchez’s career.

But players are grown men, so a HC can’t require them to not read slambook posts.
