2022 Season – Game 8 – Dolphins @ Lions

Good win last week against the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers in prime time SNF. Certainly not a perfect win, but after 3 consecutive losses without QB Tua Tagovailoa, I’ll take it! The offense came out hot and looked (and were) unstoppable on that first drive. Tua was throwing accurate passes to Hill, Waddle, Mostert and even Gesicki, culminating with the 8 yard TD pass to RB Raheem Mostert. Reminiscent of Dolphins in the past, the scripted drve worked really well, but after that, there was a noticeable dropoff in efficiency and success. The Dolphins took a commanding 13 point lead in the firstquarter and it seemed as if this game was going to be a laugher, but the Steelers defense made adjustments that the Dolphins offense couldn’t solve. The quick hitters that were getting chunks of yardage were taken away, and the Dolphins couldn’t find another way to move the ball consistently. The good thing was the defense was up to the task in Prime Time.

The Dolphins starting CB duo was X and Noah Igbinoghene. Iggy showed some promise the previous week against Minnesota and the positive play continued against the Steelers. Igbinoghene’s INT at the end of the game sealed the win for the Dolphins as the Steelers drove to the Miami 25 yard line and then Pickett threw his last pass of the evening, which was intercepted in the endzone, and nice job by Iggy to get both feet down in bounds, despite the immediate protestations of the SNF announcing crew. The worst part of the SNF game was S Brandon Jones tore his ACL and is out for the season. It’s a damn good thing we have former starting S Eric Rowe to step in. While he’s not as dynamic a player, and certainly not capable of being a blitzing nightmare that Jones was, he’s a solid vet player who knows what he’s doing out there.

The Lions have been a high scoring offense this year, except for the last 2 weeks, getting shut out by the patriots 2 weeks and scoring only 6 last week against the Cowboys. The Lions miss the 1-2 punch of RB D’Andre Smith and Jamaal Williams, Swift has been out the last 3 weeks. However, it looks like Swift will be playing Sunday after 3 days of full participation in practice. We’re all familiar with Swift’s talent, most of us wanted to draft him. The Lions scored 35, 36 and 24 points with Swift and then managed 45 against the Seahawks without Swift, but the offense has had the wheels come off the last 2 games. The Lions have an excellent offensive line, they can really run block. Swift was averaging an absurd 8.6 YPC, and Jamaal Williams a respectable 4.6 YPC. Both running backs are good receivers and are used often.WR Amon Ra St. Brown is QUESTIONABLE dealing with a concussion. St. Brown is the most heavily targeted receiver for the Lions, but they also use their TE T.J. Hockenson and WR Josh Reynolds.

The Lions defense has been allowing the league worst 32.3 PPG, so our offense should be able to put points on the board. My hope is this offense that has lit up the scoreboard in games 1 through 4 doesn’t regain that rhythm against our compromised defense. It’s possible we get Kohou and Crossen back, but DE Emmanuel Ogbah is still QUESTIONABLE with a back ailment. TE Durham Smythe is also QUESTIONABLE as is S/ST ace Clayton Fejedelem and CB Xavien Howard, though McDaniel did say he doesn’t expect anyone to be doubtful to miss the game, so we’ll wait and see on that. Our offense has been better with Tua with the exception of last week, but I’d expect Tua to be better this week after getting that game under his belt, it was an emotional return from injury, and I think he feels better after taking some hits and remaining in one piece w/o his brain being addled. The first 3 games with Tua we were averaging 27.6 PPG on offense, so I’d like to see us get back to that. Without Tua we were averaging only 16.6 PPG, a stark difference, although not unexpected with our starting QB getting hurt in 2 of the 3 games.

Mostert has absolutely become the go to back, but behind him, RB Chase Edmonds has been disappointing. Perhaps either Myles Gaskin or Salvon Ahmed get some more chances, but likely only one of them would be active, unless they choose to sit Edmonds. Edmonds is averaging only 2.6 YPC so it’s hard to imagine we make a change there. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle just need to contine to harass defenses getting open and getting chunks of yardage. I like that Mostert has been hitting holes and also getting some chunk yardage. RT Brandon Shell has been solid in place of starter Austin Jackson, who is still not ready to play. He may find it hard to see the field if Shell continues his strong play. Terron Armstead will likely play the entire season with this toe injury, so Greg Little will probably get a decent amount of snaps at LT. Hill gets a huge amount of targets every game, and why wouldn’t he, he’s been awesome, finding open spots and just blowing by defenders to get open. He’s been without question worth everything we gave up to get him. No one in this offense makes the impact he does. Waddle on the other hand also benefits from having Hill because he’s not seeing doeble coverage which is why Waddle is averaging 18.3 YPR to Hill’s 13.6. Waddle has 3 TD’s, Hill has 2, and TE Mike Gesicki also has 3 TD’s. Let’s hope Tua and the rest of the team can stay healthy, and get back to near the top in this AFC playoff race. Right now we’re 6th, I want to move up each week and get back to where we were. Easier said then done!

Another great write up MikeE! I am concerned about swift being back in the lineup. Before he missed the last 2 games he opened their offense up. They moved the ball well and scored a lot of points.

We need to contain their run game. With Swift back in the lineup they will try to carry the rock at least 30 times. They also throw to the TE’s and RB’s a good bit.

If you are reading this on your laptop, follow these steps to copy and paste.

Click in the comment or reply box where you would normally type something.
Then scroll up to where you see an existing list of scores people have already done.
It’s easiest if Howie’s List is in the last posting, so you don’t have to scroll up far.

    1) Place your mouse cursor just barely to the right of the last blue dolphin in an existing list.
    2) Depress the left mouse button and hold it down while sliding the mouse (or your fingertip on the pad) across the scores till you get to the other little icons and then upwards until you get to the left of the word Howie. You can even go diagonally.
    3) This will highlight the list. Let go so that the list stays highlighted.
    4) Hold down control key at the bottom left of your keyboard and tap the C key. That will copy it all.
    5) Scroll back down and aim your mouse in the reply or comment box and hold down the control key and tap the V key. That will paste it in there.
    6) Click after the last blue dolphin you just pasted and hit enter.
    7) Enter your score prediction.

Getting your icon of choice and the blue dolphin is in the next lesson. Or … We can do that for you. We just can’t know what score you want.

No worries though. We don’t mind doing it for you if it’s too much trouble.

PS: I suggest opening a second tab in your browser that is also showing these directions, so you can read them while you are doing them. Just go back and forth.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

      Correction to step 7.
      7) Type your score prediction.

      Lesson 2

If you want to enter your own icon choice, after step 6, do this:
      7) Hold down the window key a bit to the left of the space bar and tap the period key. Bunches of icon choices called EMOJI should pop up. Scroll through and click on the one you want. It should go right in at the bottom of Howie’s List that you just pasted.
      8) Type your predicted score.
      9) Hold down the window key a bit to the left of the space bar and tap the period key. More icon choices should pop up. Find the blue dolphin and click on it. That should now appear after your prediction.

In the future these two emoji icons should always appear as the first two choices, so it’s easier.

  41. bailbondmike says:

    Krishna, thanks for the updates!

Interesting they brought up Braylon Sanders up from the PS for this game. We don’t have any WR’s out for this game. Is it for punt return duty or is it Wilson not getting it done?

Could Wilson be on the trade block?

  44. Tim Knight says:

As for Ingold, I feel like when Bridewater and Thompson were starting we were using much more shotgun for whatever reason. And Smythe has been out for a few games so maybe we went away from the big formation.

  45. mf13ss says:

Welp, PSU lost 44-31 against the #2 in the country, Ohio State. We had them but melted down completely in the 4th quarter, SMH.

Better luck next time, Brian. I thought we were going to pull off the upset, man.

  46. mf13ss says:

Broncos @ Jags tomorrow, in London. Lots of speculation that if the Broncos don’t win tomorrow (that would put them at 2-6 on the season), the firesale will occur.

Bradley Chubb, Jerry Jeudy, and KJ Hamler are all rumored to be potentially traded.

  47. The Flying Pig says:

    Happy Birthday Herd

  48. bailbondmike says:

M13, didn’t want to say anything to jinx PSU but Clifford took care of that. They had that game if it were not for the turnovers. They would be close to undefeated if they had better QB play. The Michigan game would have been close though but they were only down 2 at the half that game.

Son was right, I was tuned in to the ND game. Don’t know where that ND team has been all season, but they looked good today.

  49. bailbondmike says:

M13, I would trade them Cedric Wilson for KJ Hamler. I don’t think they know how to use him after he had an ok rookie season. I think he may have been hurt last year.

Let Tyreek and Waddle take him under their wings. Could you imagine adding his 4.36 speed to Hill and Waddle’s speed?

I think he has some return experience also, but not sure.

  50. bailbondmike says:

I think they would want to much for Chubb. Maybe not since he is an UFA next year.

Trade Gesicki for Chubb straight up. lol

Chubb has had some injuries. His production has not been consistent, but he is playing like a beast in this contract year.

  51. bailbondmike says:

I am up in the air on trading Gesicki. I like him. His targets have gone up the last 2 games also as teams try to take away Hill and Waddle.

    First 5 games:
9 rec on 12 targets for 101 yards and 1 TD

    Last 2 games:
    9 rec on 14 targets for 96 yards and 2 TD’s

  52. CavalierKong says:

    Belated happy birthday, Herd!!

RB Duce Vaughn going off for K State today. I like that little dude (5’6 178). Put up 157 yards on 22 carries so far in 3 quarters vs #9 Oklahoma State in a blowout.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

McKinley played against the Steelers he’s up because of Needham really.

      • Tim Knight says:

But they reported him as elevated again for this week. We seem to have a lot of DBs that can flex as corner or safety.

      • son of a son of a shula says:

I thought you might have been thinking that this would be his first time up

      • Tim Knight says:

No it’s his 3rd (weeks 1, 7-8). We’ve used so many DBs this year that I sometimes don’t even know who is playing week to week. I have to give the coaching staff a lot of credit for coaching up the DBs week to week. They give up yardage but we still stay in the game on the scoreboard.

  59. son of a son of a shula says:

UCF pulled one out. It really never should have been close they fumbled twice in the red zone in third quarter. Good win, huge win in conference.

  60. son of a son of a shula says:

I think Kouhu and Crossen will both be back that’ll be good

    • Tim Knight says:

That would be good, both were playing feisty and Crossen adds a lot of speed on STs.

      • son of a son of a shula says:

Yes and Kohou just seems to gel really well with our Defense. He’s an enigma he plays like he’s made to play here like he’s a vet almost yet I’m not even sure if I can spell his name right. Good scouting on that dude, out of WhoU.

  61. son of a son of a shula says:

BBM, I’d take Isaiah Foskey in a second wherever we pick in the first round. ND looked good all day today.

And if Foskey is gone then take Mayer. 👍

  67. son of a son of a shula says:

I’m keeping Gesicki and I wonder if they consider having him coached by Welker and end the facade and just use him as a slot receiver. Huge catch radius and a tough cover for a defense. He belongs here with this team, I consider him one of the core of what we have.

    • manitobafinfan says:

I’d also prefer to keep him , as any picks helps trade would garner would not net an adequate replacement, and his absence would hurt our playoff push I believe

    • Tim Knight says:

Gesicki is a tough trade on the franchise tag and a UFA next year. We would never get good value. I think he can be a part of what we do on offense. He’s a receiving TE and we all know that, he can create mismatches. His numbers aren’t huge, but maybe his presence allows Hill and Waddle to work the field. They’re both trending to big numbers this year.

  68. son of a son of a shula says:

Jeudy would be a smooth move for us. I know exactly what you’re going to say but he’s just a bad fit in Denver. He’s a Waddle clone, knows Tua well he’d fit right. Not for our first though, he’s likely a package of later picks.

    • mf13ss says:

Not sure another #1 WR is what we need to win… just sayin’…

      • mf13ss says:

I’d rather entertain a trade for Roquan Smith…

      • son of a son of a shula says:

True he doesn’t put us over the top but in a fire sale he’d be a good fit.
Smith – Yes, he’s awesome but you’d pay, that’s a going for it move.

    • Tim Knight says:

He’s a bigger outside WR at 6-1 195 with vertical speed. His production does not scream high draft picks. He’s been up and down. But he could be a piece on our offense at the right price.

  69. Tim Knight says:

Roquan Smith is a luxury and I don’t see LB as an issue for us. He’d mess up our cap and draft capital.

  70. mf13ss says:

    Think about it…

Had Steve Ross not meddled with Tom Brady, we could have used our docked 1st rounder (2023) and 3rd rounder (2024) to trade for Roquan Smith.

Yes, we could have created the cap space in order to give him a new contract.

    • Tim Knight says:

Come on, man. Let that go already. You can’t change the past. Work with what we do have. We still have a 1, 2 and two 3’s this year.

      • randydolfan1947 says:

TIM; I AGREE you can’t change the past. But you CAN learn from it. And in Miami’s case, I HOPE THEY’VE LEARNED THAT STEVE ROSS should have absolutely NOTHING to do with acquiring new talent for the Dolphin franchise. This MUST be the job of trained, experienced, individuals who have had meaningful past experience in building franchises and selecting the best available people to fill whatever openings might exist on the team.

      • Tim Knight says:

I agree and have said as much. Ross needs to stay out of the football recruiting business. You pay people to do that and all you do is fuck things up when you get involved. Build 1st class facilities and pay top players. That’s it.

  71. bailbondmike says:

Son, Yes, I would be very happy if we drafted Foskey in the first round. I have been leaning CB but if Kohou and Crossen keep improving with Trill Williams coming back and if Byron Jones finally gets healthy, it may not be as high on my need list as pass rush.

It makes sense with Ingram being here on a 1 year rental and seems to have disappeared the last 3-4 games.

ON ANOTHER TOPIC; FAU held off UAB by breaking up a pass in the end zone with 2 seconds to go to secure a 24-17 win at home over UAB at Schnellenberger Field in Boca Raton. Itwas on the CBS Sports Channel Ch#221 on Directv. Next season FAU moves up to the American Athletic Conference where virtually all their games will be on somebody’s TV channel. The TV money to FAU will be about 4-5 times what they’re currently getting from Conference USA on a yearly basis.

It should work great on a “regular computer” or anywhere, although I don’t have any experience with iphones.

You can copy anything from any website or anywhere else using those same directions and paste it into your own posts or even Word docs.

It’s not limited to Howie’s List, this site, or blogs in general.

If you are typing a long piece of text with paragraphs, how do you move parts around?

It’s easy to edit or revise using that cut and paste or copy and paste method instead of retyping everything.

    but
    if we win out,
won’t that give us 17 wins and a Super Bowl just like the ’72 team had?

    Happy belated BD Herd!

  79. naplesfan2010 says:

Early thoughts on “needs” in the 2023 draft are the obvious:
a premier pass rusher (guaranteed to get 9+ sacks / year)
a ball hawk CB (guaranteed to get 5+ picks / year)
a 3 down MLB/ILB (only if at the superstar level, not JAG)
a RB with some power and a nose for the EZ
a PR/KR capable of taking it to the house
a TE that makes RockPhin happy
12 new DBs in case of injury

Thanks everyone for all the HBD. Hopefully the Fins give me a good gift today.

Herd also sent me a flask like that.
It was for predicting which of the 90 would make the 53.

    I forget the year,
but my sons (who were teenagers at the time)
still think you are the coolest chick on the blog
    for sending me that.

Like Boulder, I too keep mine pristine and
just bring it out on game days for luck.

    THANK you!!

Good luck this week keeping YOUR perfect season alive vsMike E

No way I win this week. I’ve prepared myself for it. 😂

It is a tough matchup.. I’m trying to stay out of last place 😵‍💫

      • herdfan says:

I’m shocked I won last week. And I have a bone to pick with the nfl fantasy site. I had to auto draft. Kirk Cousins was my back up QB, I thought I’d play him on Josh Allen’s bye week last week. But nooooo. He has the same bye week! Why would they draft a back up QB with the same bye as the starter?!?!?
