The only rankings that matter are wins and losses and how far the team goes. Individual stats are good and all and shows what a guy brings to the table. But winning is supreme. That’s why I like what our team is doing. They’re trying to win a championship. As fans we can’t fault them for that.

We added two players that are plug and play in the systems we run. Chubb is mainly a 2-point stance Edge/OLB. Along with Phillips we have two big edge guys who can run. Ingram and Van Ginkel will serve as backups. That’s pretty solid.

I found it really interesting how humble MM is. Whatever the case, your actions (at least in my life experience) always seem to come back to you; you have either learned the lesson and burned the karma or you are destined to repeat it because you’re too stubborn to see the lesson to be learned. Most are humbled by this realization. Perhaps MM knows this, as well.
I have to say, I’m really excited about getting Bradley Chubb. Sometimes it just takes that one player to transform a defense. Chubb is as talented a player as there is. I know he hasn’t set the NFL on fire yet, but he’s got the goods to do it. I’m also hoping his presence really gets Phillips going. Sometimes players feed off each other and I think we have two really big, physical, talented players that can end up being a dynamic duo.
Ditto Mike. As much as the NFL wants a passer to have virtually no pressure so their flagship star QBs can sit and throw down field all day, it’s still a game won and lost in the trenches and an ability to physically dominate an opponent is something we’ve been on the wrong end of for way too long. Think Ravens, think Bills etc etc. Maybe, just maybe, we are turning the tables on this mismatch a little in our favour?

It’s nice that we can also mix in Melvin Ingram. I think he’s more suited to being rotated in now and again rather than starting and playing too many snaps. If Chubb and Phillips get it going, Ingram should be able to help us giving one of these guys a play or two off to get a breather without any letdown.

Without Chubb, it’s obvious we don’t have the D to pressure the QB with a 4 or 5 man rush, we just don’t. We are worst 5 in pass D in NFL without Chubb.

I’m excited to watch these guys on Sunday against the bears.
I was a little slow to the party, but I’m there now and officially excited about what the additions of Chubb and Wilson potentially means for this team. Glad we got the deal done this quickly so it isn’t hanging over our heads.
My biggest gripe was I didn’t think we could compete for a SB this year, but as I know has been pointed out before, Cincy did it, they certainly had team issues, but they brought it all together at the right time, so why not us?

Ogbah was good early, then when he got banged up Phillips came on strong, will be nice to see 2 or 3 of them bring it at the same time
Was watching some of the tape breakdowns on Chubb last night and really liked what I saw. I agree with what you mention above that it isn’t just about his sack numbers, he is top 3 in pass rush win percentage this year and he’s really good against the run. Pairing him with Phillips should open things up for both players.
Maybe you’re right about us keeping Byron Jones next year too. If he comes back healthy and Howard can get healthy (maybe after the bye for both) and we can start locking down with our CBs again to give the pass rush time…who knows how good the D can be?
Cav — I still ain’t entertaining Super Bowl this year. Have moved from maybe playoffs to we should be in them. Thinking the Big Game possibles for 2023.
That was really my thinking too until late last night. But the more I look at this team, we really do have a lot of talent across the board. I think the biggest thing that might hold us back right now, and I believe Ken mentioned it yesterday, is really just experience. New HC, new system, playoff experience. Oh, and our effing special teams, lol.
Once you start talking Bowl, you have to start talking who else is out there. And that starts with the Bills. You can say we beat them but that would directed at the ears of the biggest heat game advantage proponent on this board.
If we don’t win the division, there is the very real possibility we’ll have to go through both the Chiefs and the Bills on the road. Tall order
Real psyched we signed Chubb but wondering how it works.
Broncos can trade Chubb to us no matter what he wants. Dolphins can’t even talk to Chubb or it is tampering (ask Ross about that one). Chubb is under absolutely no obligation to sign with us after the trade. He can just wait till after the season and hit the FA market.
Only thing I can figure is that the Broncos gave permission for the Dolphins to talk with Chubb and his agent before the trade and they came to at least a general understanding. And that matches up with how quick the signing came after the trade.
Definitely excited with how this organization is working. Love the work Grier has done and while I preferred Daboll during the hiring process, McDaniels seems to be the right guy for what we need. Tua needed a coach who believed in him and some weapons to thrive and we finally have a franchise QB and the replacement for the Marks Bros way later. Still not sold on our Asst. coaches though.
Grier is getting us the prime talent for a playoff run and I really believe we can win a playoff game this year. Damn good job Dolphins! I’m finally excited at the potential of one of our teams!
Tua is not just a different player, but a different man this year. Not sure how much of it is McDaniel versus the departure of Flores.

I feel much the same way. We are in the conversation. I don’t count the Jets as real. Nice defense but horrible QB and best RB is injured. I can’t see them as being legit for 17 games. Baltimore is a good team and they got better. SD has not quite lived up to expectations but like us they have been slowed by an injury to their QB. Cincy has been exposed a little especially on the OL but Burrow will always make them competitive. There is no one in the AFC South that I think is legit
It’s definitely a supportable one now though, isn’t it? It feels good. We just barely beat a bad team, but I can see the strength of our team right now and we are dangerous.

Think the question right now is if we are legitimate Super Bowl contenders? And keep in mind the majority of those don’t end up in the Super Bowl.
I can’t go that far but we can do like the Bengals last year if we get lucky like they did. I didn’t believe that until we beat the Bills, but we did. It’s too far of a move and too fast just based on our history. At the same time it’s now a possibility in my mind which is refreshing.

Honestly, things would have to go really badly for us not to hit the playoffs this year. We have a pretty good schedule remaining and like Ken, I think the Jets aren’t very good and will lose to us in the 2nd meeting. I think we can sweep the Pats pretty reliably as well.
Ken — never been a year when I considered every team that got in the playoffs a legitimate SB contender. Maybe a matter of definition but to me normally 2-4 teams are (varies year to year).

Thinking more on Stanger’s topic, I agree with Ken. We are definitely a contender if we think we can be a playoff team. We aren’t a SB favorite because we’re still not at the KC, Buff, maybe even Philly level yet. So, I believe we are a playoff caliber team, so we are also a contender. It feels good.

Stanger, that was my original thought process as well. It’s hard to call yourself a contender when you haven’t won a playoff game in 20 years, but the any given Sunday mantra is even more likely in today’s game. Outside of Brady, the NFL has had a lot of variety in the playoffs since 2000.

Since the Wild Card System began in 1970, only ten wild card teams have advanced all the way to the Super Bowl. Of those, six won the Super Bowl. It’s not common by any means, but it happens.

Not only that but the way we’ve played gives confidence. At no time in the past decade would I have believed we could come back against a huge Baltimore lead or against the Lions, but we did. This team is loaded with weapons just like the Bengals last year and the perennial favorites. We actually have the talent offensively to compete with the big guns and the D to win in a shootout. We can still win the 19-16 games but now we can sling out 35 if we need to. It’s a huge difference.
For me, there are three types of play-off teams. 1/ The Dolphins who were humiliated 62-7 by the Jags and just don’t belong. 2/ The team which plays well over 16/17 games but is out-matched in the play-offs by a more complete team (i.e. one which makes fewer mistakes and takes opportunities which come along). 3/ a team which fights to the final whistle and stays in games to the point of last possession wins.
We are a 2 or a 3 right now. Who knows where we’ll be come season’s end?

For the first time in a long time it feels like we have a high end modern offense. The lack has held us back for ages. And the reality is, if we play up to our ability, we can play with anyone.
The only reason I hesitate to say we are serious SB contenders is because we’ll have to run 4 games strong games together and I’m not sure we’re there yet. The team is still developing its offense (only 8 games together) and it might take a full year and a playoff experience to learn what it takes to win the whole thing.
That is kind of how I see us. We are not there quite yet but the potential is there for us to go on a run
I was down on the Chubb trade because I really thought we were still a few players away, but you look at this roster and we have talent everywhere. We just need to put it together and gel…and get a new special teams coordinator.
Get some playoff experience this year, add a couple more pieces in the offseason, get rid of Crossman, and go on a serious run next year…but if everything lines up for us, we could legitimately compete this year.
Like New Age was saying, it’s great that we can be in any situation in a game and as fans still believe we have a chance.

I think the secret weapon is what can make a wild card team a contender.
The secret weapon is team spirit.
A team with “magic” or “destiny” can transcend those that are just good enough by record to get in.
We’ve proven we can come from way behind and win even against high quality coaches and MVP QBs.

A player like Tyreek can pull off a stunning play to win a game against a “better” team.
Right now looking at our holes I have to say the biggest hole is in the secondary due to the injuries to Jones and Jones. Second biggest hole is depth on OL once again due to injury. But if Jackson is coming back we may be okay there
Byron Jones has yet to play and we lost 3 other DBs for the season in Trill Williams, Nik Needam and Brandon Jones.
On a related side note, I’m moderately surprised that Hill has not scored more TDs.
He seems to make most of his catches on routes that terminate at the point of catch.
Not all of course, but far more than I thought it would be.
I know some will say that this is because Tua underthrows him,
which is sometimes true,
but a bit of that falls on Hill as well.
A QB can only throw a football just so far,
just as a FG kicker is not going to kick a 90 yard FG.
And the farther the ball is thrown,
the less accurate it will be because of wind and angle.
Just like in golf. Even pros put tee shots in the rough or the woods, because a quarter inch off multiplied by 300 yards is a huge amount of feet offline. Same with putts.
Hill can just run like it’s a hundred yard dash and
out-run the DBs at the 60 or 70 yard mark.
But that’s not helping your OL who have to hold up long enough for you to run that far and your QB who must maintain accuracy like a tee shot. Footballs hook, too.
It’s a nice problem to have though, isn’t it?
Also because Hill is drawing coverage he is creating opportunities for Waddle and Gisecki who are racking up TDs right now
Especially in the red zone.
During the Lions game they said Hill has been targeted just once in the red zone which is crazy when you think about it. I still am not sure about just once, but he definitely isn’t targeted much.
I think teams must be doubling him in the red zone, and since he has less space to work, he’s not getting open as much, but it is opening it up for Waddle and Gesicki.
It really works out great for us because our 1 and 1a guys both get to eat. Tyreek gets the real big yardage numbers and the occasional long score, and Waddle gets good yardage and the majority of TDs.

wow that guy is running full speed when he hits the hole (usually).
That’s what this offense needs the RBs to be doing. Mostert does this a lot.
Either that or dig your back foot into the dirt and cut hard off your blocker’s ass.
Plus Jeff showed some nice body twist to catch balls thrown over the wrong shoulder.
A lot of RBs are too muscle-bound to do that on the regular.

I agree. We are suddenly not a juggernaut just because we added 2 more good players.
We are a team who in the last 5 games got slammed by the Bengals, scorched by Zack Wilson and the Jets, manhandled by the Vikings, then barely squeaked out wins vs the 2-6 Steelers and 1-6 Lions.
For some to think we are SB contenders with our secondary and all the other injuries is almost delusional.
With the Bills remaining schedule, our best bet will probably be a WC birth unless the injury bug hits Buffalo.
I am just taking it 1 game at a time.
and yes, 2 of our wins were vs the Bills and Ravens. Both team’s secondaries were riddled with injuries at the time, also.
I don’t want to hear about injuries on other teams when our injuries never seem to matter to anyone.
