That was not the problem today. They were not beating us over the top. Only 123 yards on 28 attempts. It was playing your DBs with their back to the QBs. It allowed Fields to extend plays with his legs and or take off for big runs

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’m well aware! It has been a problem for the season though. It was partly the DB’s, but it was mostly the DL and LBs. That’s who’s job it is to prevent that from happening. T

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

My point was that they can’t do what makes them so successful- the fact that they DIDN’T do it through the air only highlights the fact that our D is playing awful right now. Fields set the record for most yards ever by a QB against us. That’s embarrassing.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I would have expected we play more zone which keeps the DBs facing the QB which takes away some of the running opportunities.

The Bears defense had not allowed a QB to throw for 3 TDs OR 300 yards against them all year. Tua did both.

Thank you, Brian. This is precisely what I’m talking about, and I think Steve would concur.

The H2H loss counts more against us than our better Conference record (.667 vs .625) counts for us.

  43. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Ken…those games are really rare. IMO most games in the NFL except for the really bad teams are close-run affairs. Look at last year, the Lions lost so many games by 3 points or less. Turn that around and they become a winning team.
Still this year our team appears to be so much better than last years.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

No doubt we are much better and we are settled at the most important position on the field. I really think we can go on a run over the next 3-5 years of being a very competitive team. However we have to really gel. When we do we will be scary good

“I’m like a kid in a candy store,” Hill said Sunday, via the Miami Herald. “I’m just having fun.”

Hill has been the beneficiary of a ton of targets from Tua Tagovailoa this season, and it helps that McDaniel’s scheme creates wide-open plays for the speedy wideouts.

Tyreek is the candy store, sure MM has been amazing too, but Tyreek is uncoverable and getting his, while allowing Waddle to garner less attention and get his

  58. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

I don’t know if, from my comments yesterday, I’ve been classed as angst-ridden and on the doom train, but to clarify, I’m still in show me mode with the Fins, whilst daring to dream in secret.

A first year HC has come in and installed a new offense which is really, really difficult to defend and is being executed almost to perfection, with each game being a points fest for Tua et al. It is a joy to watch and reminiscent of those Marino days of yore.

All that, however, is being potentially jeopardised by the D and ST letting us down, which could mean that when it matters, in a crucial game at season’s end or in sudden death, we are outscored. My point from yesterday, is that we’ve seen the processes MM insists on, his attention to detail and how methodical he is. I very much suspect strong words have been had behind the scenes and people are on warnings. Does that mean I’d ditch them now? Nope. But I could quite easily see that if things aren’t fixed, MM will step in and I wouldn’t be surprised if the hammer comes down next Monday.

Detroit sacked their DB coach, and the Sky anchor was talking to Peter King at HT of the second Sky game yesterday. He said that the Lions were supercharged yesterday as a result. Of course, this kind of action can back fire too, but MM is not a fence sitter and he won’t tolerate less then the best a player or unit can do. In spite of injuries, the D is currently less than the sum of its parts. If we have aspirations of greatness (remember what MM wrote in his helmet?) we need a top 10 D to play like one and better STs to boot.

Get that and we then have 2 more hurdles to a Championship imho. The first is mental and the second is the elements. Conquer those and the Sky’s the limit!

UK…mate the one most under pressure is Danny Crossman in my book. ST has been crap all season. Boyer will sort out the D mistakes, this week. If not, the writing will on the wall for a firing at the end of the season. I wouldn’t terminate him ATS.

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

The thing is, cobber, in the Not For Long, you literally don’t have the luxury of a long slow fix, especially when we have a finite window with this group, built partially with future picks that have been traded to get us here. If we were in a long rebuild, I’d agree, but whilst the D has made some massive stops to keep us in games, truth is, some of them shouldn’t have even been close. I get the other team come to play too and we’ve had injuries, but this D is underperforming and making a lot of mistakes. I like Boyer and he spoke a lot of sense in that interview posted the other day, but I’d be surprised if he isn’t hearing footsteps. And if we keep bending double and one day break at the wrong time, I suspect he’s history.

The catch and run he had yesterday I think really showed his issues. He is just so slow changing direction when he’s running. He caught the ball, and if he immediately turned upfield he’d have picked up probably 7 or 8 yards.

Instead he picked up 3 because he just kept barreling forward right into the defender because he just isn’t capable of changing direction, lol.

He’s been an asset in the red zone, but I think his issues blocking and limitations in the passing game mean he’s gone next year. I think we just let him walk.

And the cameras picking up Coach asking Fields to stop: I just wanted him to stop scrambling. It was pretty irritating because he didn’t listen at all. He didn’t take the coaching, he says in jest.

Our defense definitely has to clean some things up and the pass rush has to pick up their game.

      NO DOUBT!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Chubb looked okay but didn’t do much overall. I give him a break on that because he got traded, had a long travel, gets with the team has some practices and then travels again to Chicago. I want to see him amp up his game this week though.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m with ya 100% on that… and I want to see Jaelan Phillips actually look like he did last season. He’s been a huge disappointment for us this year and thus far.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phillips has actually been playing well he’s just not getting the sacks. There’s more to his game than just that. He’s really good setting the edge and he never stops playing – he chases plays all over the field.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Phillips certainly doesn’t suck, but it seems as though he’s hit a sophomore slump of sorts.

It’s not like he got 16 sacks last season (only had 8), and he’s likely not going to match that production this year. Certainly, sacks don’t tell the tale of pressures… but he’s not even doing that well this season.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Disagree. Sometimes sacks come in bunches. He also blocked a punt that resulted in a TD.

Fields is an anomaly we’re better prepared to stop Chubb next week than Fields. Hopefully I don’t eat my words. Cleveland is a tough matchup for us if Garrett goes off but if we can score early and often and make them throw we’ll destroy Brissett.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lots of games this season have been competitive across the league. I don’t see many dominant teams this year except for maybe Philly.

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, another thing that I see is teams are getting the ball out quickly because they know we’re coming and we’ve had a lot of opportunities to make tackles on short routes but we’re missing them and giving them 1st downs. Our open field tackling has been sub par. Our interior pass rush has been struggling. I see us getting pressure from the edges but we’re allowing QBs to step up or run. That’s why I said our pass rush has to pick it up because it’s not just about the edge rushers.

Our backup secondary from the PS and off the street are competing but they’re not top level talents. It seems we have 2 or 3 new guys playing every week. That’s hard to do.

Lol…MM blamed his beat reporters for not telling him about the Chicago wind…said a gust of wind blew Sanders’ kick off the mark.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sanders kicked it wide with the wind. I was like dude you gotta kick that to the opposite goal post and let the wind sneak it in.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

We shouldn’t have even been kicking a FG they blew that opportunity for a TD. Too bad because that would have been an early back breaker especially with us scoring coming out of halftime.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Agree with both you….even MM said there were technical issues they needed to work on…lol

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have some things to clean up in a few areas but it’s a lot better working on that at 6-3. 🙂

Fields was Cam yesterday and we always had trouble with Cam. Maybe not quite as physical but every bit as determined as a runner. He was tough but not tough enough to carry the day fortunately.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Fields has elite physical ability as a runner. If he cleans up his passing he’s going to be a tough guy to defend for years to come.

  95. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

6-3 is a good record to have at this point of the season, for sure.

It ain’t perfect; and funny thing, alluding to Ken’s point, putting it all together, we could/would be scary good.

Jim Irsay is soooooo much worse than out awful owner.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not much has gone right for the Colts this year. It appears that they have blown their window to get to the promise land. It started with a new QB every year and then they lost some of their top players.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Does he tamper with Brady too?

  97. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Bears are also the top rushing team in the league led by Fields. We shut down their backs but Fields went off on us.

  98. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

He is absolutely tanking by firing everyone who knows the playbook on offense and putting Saturday a TV personality in charge. Sucking for luck again, but wont have to defend himself from losing a draft pick.
